RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The hair follicle is a skin accessory organ that regulates hair development, and its activity varies on a regular basis. However, the significance of metabolites in the hair follicle cycle has long been unknown. RESULTS: Targeted metabolomics was used in this investigation to reveal the expression patterns of 1903 metabolites in cashmere goat skin during anagen to telogen. A statistical analysis was used to investigate the potential associations between metabolites and the hair follicle cycle. The findings revealed clear changes in the expression patterns of metabolites at various phases and in various feeding models. The majority of metabolites (primarily amino acids, nucleotides, their metabolites, and lipids) showed downregulated expression from anagen (An) to telogen (Tn), which was associated with gene expression, protein synthesis and transport, and cell structure, which reflected, to some extent, that the cells associated with hair follicle development are active in An and apoptotic in An-Tn. It is worth mentioning that the expression of vitamin D3 and 3,3',5-triiodo-L-thyronine decreased and then increased, which may be related to the shorter and longer duration of outdoor light, which may stimulate the hair follicle to transition from An to catagen (Cn). In the comparison of different hair follicle development stages (An, Cn, and Tn) or feeding modes (grazing and barn feeding), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis revealed that common differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) (2'-deoxyadenosine, L-valine, 2'-deoxyuridine, riboflavin, cytidine, deoxyguanosine, L-tryptophan, and guanosine-5'-monophosphate) were enriched in ABC transporters. This finding suggested that this pathway may be involved in the hair follicle cycle. Among these DEMs, riboflavin is absorbed from food, and the expression of riboflavin and sugars (D-glucose and glycogen) in skin tissue under grazing was greater and lower than that during barn feeding, respectively, suggesting that eating patterns may also alter the hair follicle cycle. CONCLUSIONS: The expression patterns of metabolites such as sugars, lipids, amino acids, and nucleotides in skin tissue affect hair follicle growth, in which 2'-deoxyadenosine, L-valine, 2'-deoxyuridine, riboflavin, cytidine, deoxyguanosine, L-tryptophan, and guanosine-5'-monophosphate may regulate the hair follicle cycle by participating in ABC transporters. Feeding practices may regulate hair follicle cycles by influencing the amount of hormones and vitamins expressed in the skin of cashmere goats.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent depression has been shown to be associated with many devastating psychosocial outcomes. However, there are many barriers that may prevent depressed individuals from receiving specialised treatment. Virtual reality (VR) technology has shown promise as one avenue for overcoming these challenges. This study first aims to evaluate the effectiveness of VR intervention on adolescent depression symptoms, and second, to determine the intervention's underlying mechanism of effect using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a single-centre, prospective, randomised controlled clinical trial. Sixty-six eligible adolescents aged 12-18 years with a diagnosis of depression will be randomised in a 1:1 ratio to either the VR treatment group or the conventional treatment group. All patients for both groups will receive usual treatment during a 4-week intervention period. In addition, patients randomised to VR treatment group (n=33) will complete three 20 min VR sessions including attention, executive function and relaxation training per week. Moreover, 33 healthy adolescents will be recruited as the general population. Primary outcome (ie, depressive symptoms) and secondary outcomes (ie, anxiety symptoms, executive function, treatment emergent symptoms, haemoglobin changes measured by fNIRS) will be collected at preintervention, immediately postintervention and at 4 weeks follow-up. The data assessor and analyst will be blinded to group membership. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval has been obtained from the Ethics Committee of Lishui Second People's Hospital. Written informed consent will be obtained for all participants. Results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, national or international conference presentations, media outlets, the internet and various community activities. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR2300067747.

RESUMO

Paranosema locustae is an entomopathogenic microsporidia with promising potential for controlling agricultural pests, including Locusta migratoria manilensis. However, it has the disadvantage of having a slow insecticidal rate, and how P. locustae infection impacts the host immune response is currently unknown. The present study investigated the effect of P. locustae on the natural immune response of L. migratoria and the activities of enzymes that protect against oxidative stress. Infection with P. locustae increased the hemocytes and nodulation number of L. migratoria at the initial stage of infection. The hemocyte-mediated modulation of immune response was also affected by a decrease in the number of hemocytes 12 days postinfection. Superoxide dismutase activity in locusts increased in the early stages of infection but decreased in the later stages, whereas the activities of peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) showed opposite trends may be due to their different mechanisms of action. Furthermore, the transcription levels of mRNA of antimicrobial peptide-related genes and phenoloxidase activity in hemolymph in L. migratoria were suppressed within 15 days of P. locustae infection. Overall, our data suggest that P. locustae create a conducive environment for its own proliferation in the host by disrupting the immune defense against it. These findings provide useful information for the potential application of P. locustae as a biocontrol agent.

RESUMO

Cashmere, a highly valuable animal product derived from cashmere goats, holds significant economic importance. MiRNAs serve as crucial regulators in the developmental processes of mammalian hair follicles. Understanding the regulation of miRNAs during the hair follicle cycle is essential for enhancing cashmere quality. In this investigation, we employed high-throughput sequencing technology to analyze the expression profiles of miRNAs in the secondary hair follicles of Jiangnan cashmere goats at different stages. Through bioinformatics analysis, we identified differentially expressed miRNAs (DE miRNAs). The regulatory relationships between miRNAs and their target genes were verified using multiple techniques, including RT-qPCR, western blot, Dual-Luciferase Reporter, and CKK-8 assays. Our findings revealed the presence of 193 DE miRNAs during various stages of the hair follicle cycle in Jiangnan cashmere goats. Based on the previously obtained mRNA data, the target genes of DE miRNA were predicted, and 1,472 negative regulatory relationships between DE miRNAs and target genes were obtained. Notably, the expression of chi-miR-877-3p was down-regulated during the telogen (Tn) phase compared to the anagen (An) and catagen (Cn) phases, while the IGFBP5 gene exhibited up-regulation. Further validation experiments confirmed that overexpression of chi-miR-877-3p in dermal papilla cells suppressed IGFBP5 gene expression and facilitated cell proliferation. The results of this study provide novel insights for analyzing the hair follicle cycle.

Cashmere goats, known for their diverse range of animal products including delectable meat, soft sheepskin, and high-quality natural fiber, offer an excellent opportunity to explore hair regeneration as they represent a heterogenous fur mammal. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules encoded by approximately 3% of mammalian genes. Remarkably, they have the ability to regulate around 30% of protein-coding genes. Given that a single miRNA can target multiple genes, they exert control over various biological functions such as metabolism, growth, development, and immunity. In this study, we found that miR-877-3p is able to regulate the expression of insulin-like growth factor binding protein 5 (IGFBP5), a key gene involved in the development of the hair follicle cycle. Investigating the regulatory role of miRNAs in the hair follicle cycle of cashmere goats provides a novel perspective for unraveling the mechanisms underlying hair follicle growth and development in mammals.

RESUMO

In recent years, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been attracting more and more attention. Although perovskite materials have high defect tolerance, defects remain the main factor that seriously affects the efficiency and stability of PSCs. Herein, the ionic liquid of 1-butyl, 3-methylimidazolium acetate ([BMIM][ACO]) was introduced into the SnO2/perovskite interface for the first time. Thanks to the dipoles formed by ILs spontaneously, the work function of SnO2 was reduced and the transport ability of carriers was improved as well. Moreover, the Lewis acidity and lone pair electrons of [BMIM][ACO] contribute to the passivation of I- defects, Pb2+ defects, or Pb-I anti site defects. In addition, the presence of dipoles will repel the approach of photogenerated holes and the reverse transport of electrons, reducing the recombination of defect sites through field-effect passivation. The solar cell with efficiency of 19.43% was obtained under such a dual passivation effect, and the best device maintained 75.21% of the initial efficiency after 80 h of continuous illumination.

RESUMO

Conditional control of RNA structure and function has emerged as an effective toolkit. Here, a strategy based on a one-step introduction of diacylation linkers and azide groups on the 2'-OH of RNA is advance. Selected from eight phosphine reagents, it is found that 2-(diphenylphosphino)ethylamine has excellent performance in reducing azides via a Staudinger reduction to obtain the original RNA. It is demonstrated that the enzymatic activities of Cas13 and Cas9 can be regulated by chemically modified guide RNAs, and further achieved ligand-induced gene editing in living cells by a controllable CRISPR/Cas9 system.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The identification of early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) is important for the effective management of patients, affecting their treatment and prognosis. Recently, structural brain networks (SBNs) have been used to diagnose PD. However, how to mine abnormal patterns from high-dimensional SBNs has been a challenge due to the complex topology of the brain. Meanwhile, the existing prediction mechanisms of deep learning models are often complicated, and it is difficult to extract effective interpretations. In addition, most works only focus on the classification of imaging and ignore clinical scores in practical applications, which limits the ability of the model. Inspired by the regional modularity of SBNs, we adopted graph learning from the perspective of node clustering to construct an interpretable framework for PD classification. METHODS: In this study, a multi-task graph structure learning framework based on node clustering (MNC-Net) is proposed for the early diagnosis of PD. Specifically, we modeled complex SBNs into modular graphs that facilitated the representation learning of abnormal patterns. Traditional graph neural networks are optimized through graph structure learning based on node clustering, which identifies potentially abnormal brain regions and reduces the impact of irrelevant noise. Furthermore, we employed a regression task to link clinical scores to disease classification, and incorporated latent domain information into model training through multi-task learning. RESULTS: We validated the proposed approach on the Parkinsons Progression Markers Initiative dataset. Experimental results showed that our MNC-Net effectively separated the early-stage PD from healthy controls(HC) with an accuracy of 95.5%. The t-SNE figures have showed that our graph structure learning method can capture more efficient and discriminatory features. Furthermore, node clustering parameters were used as important weights to extract salient task-related brain regions(ROIs). These ROIs are involved in the development of mood disorders, tremors, imbalances and other symptoms, highlighting the importance of memory, language and mild motor function in early PD. In addition, statistical results from clinical scores confirmed that our model could capture abnormal connectivity that was significantly different between PD and HC. These results are consistent with previous studies, demonstrating the interpretability of our methods.

RESUMO

Structure has been considered to play an important role in photocatalytic performance of the semiconductors, but the intrinsic factors were rarely revealed. Herein, ZnO nanomaterials in the structures of thin film, nanowire array and nanosheet array were synthesized, and their structural characteristics, optical properties, photocurrent response and photocatalytic efficiency were compared with each other for illustrating the issue. The photoluminescence intensity decreased in the order of nanosheets, thin film and nanowires for improved lifetime of the photoexcited charges. The absorption of the nanosheets and nanowires improved obviously in the visible range with a redshift of the absorption edge than that of the thin film. The nanowires possessed the highest response current of 82.65 µA at a response time of 2.0 ms in a sensitivity of 87.93 at the light frequency of 1 Hz, and gained the largest catalytic efficiency of 2.45 µg/cm2 h for the methylene blue degradation in UV light. Nevertheless, the improvement of catalytic efficiency of the nanosheets (up to 42.4%) was much larger than that of nanowires (5.7%) and thin film (2.6%) for the Au coating. The analysis revealed that the photocatalytic efficiency of the ZnO nanomaterials was modulated by the structure as it contained different surface area, roughness, defect and doping states, vacancies, polar and non-polar crystalline faces, which would provide structural design of semiconductor nanomaterials for the photoelectric and photocatalytic applications.

RESUMO

Black-phase formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3), with a narrow bandgap and high thermal stability, has emerged as an in-demand material for highly efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In a two-step sequential deposition, the PbI2 film plays an important role in the formation of a perovskite film with desirable qualities. This paper explores using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), a strong Lewis base, and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a mixed precursor solvent (DMF/NMP) of PbI2 and reports on preparing PbI2 films with a porous morphology by thermal treatment. Porous PbI2 films ensure the diffusion and sufficient reaction of the formamidinium iodide solution to form a smooth perovskite film. In addition, a dynamic spin coating method is also introduced to improve the uniformity of the perovskite film. Both methods yield a pure α-phase FAPbI3 film immediately in the unannealed state, which is necessary for the perovskite film to maintain phase stability. Finally, PSCs with a power conversion efficiency of 21.20% (0.13 cm2) are fabricated and optimized. The unencapsulated PSCs retain 90% of the initial efficiency for 1000 hours in dry air and exhibit a good thermal stability when heated to 85 °C.

RESUMO

A ternary semiconductor ZnO/MoS2/Ag2S nanorod array in an intimate core-shell structure was synthesized on glass substrates. The physicochemical properties and photocatalytical performance of the specimen were characterized and compared with single ZnO and binary ZnO/Ag2S and ZnO/MoS2 nanorod arrays. It is found that the coating layers depressed the band edge emission of the ZnO core, improved light absorption in the visible range, reduced charge transfer resistance, and increased photocatalytic activity. The ternary heterojunction nanorod array possessed full solar absorption with an efficiency of 52.88% for the degradation of methylene blue under visible light in 30 min. The efficiency was higher than other arrays and was 7.6 times that of the ZnO array. Theory analysis revealed that the coating layer brought different band alignment in the heterojunctions for efficient charge separation and conduction, which was beneficial for the photocatalytic performance.

RESUMO

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been reported to be an important risk factor for asthma. This study was designed to evaluate the relationship between PM2.5 and lung function among children with asthma in Shanghai, China. From 2016 to 2019, a total of 70 Chinese children aged 4 to 14 in Shanghai were recruited for this panel study. The questionnaire was used to collect baseline information, and the lung function covering forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were carried out for each child more than twice during follow-up. Meanwhile, the simultaneous daily air atmospheric pollutants and meteorological data were collected. The linear mixed effect (LME) model was used to assess the relationship between air pollutants and lung function. A significantly negative association was found between PM2.5 and lung function in children with asthma. In the single-pollutant model, the largest effects of PM2.5 on lung function were found for lag 0-2, with FVC and FEV1 decreasing by 0.91% [95% confidence interval (CI): -1.75, -0.07] and 1.05% (95% CI: -2.09, 0.00), respectively, for each 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5. In the multi-pollution model (adjusted PM2.5 + SO2 + O3), the maximum effects of PM2.5 on FVC and FEV1 also appeared for lag 0-2, with FVC and FEV1 decreasing by 1.57% (95% CI: -2.69, -0.44) and 1.67% (95% CI: -3.05, -0.26), respectively, for each 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5. In the subgroup analysis, boys, preschoolers (<6 years old) and hot seasons (May to September) were more sensitive to changes. Our findings may contribute to a better understanding of the short-term exposure effects of PM2.5 on lung function in children with asthma.

RESUMO

Purpose: We report the prevalence of age-related cataract (ARC) in the Jingan district of Shanghai and analyze the risk factors for ARC to be better prepared for the increasing burden of cataracts as a significant cause of visual impairment worldwide. Methods: From March to June 2010, a population-based, cross-sectional study was conducted in a community selected by stratified cluster sampling in the Jingan district of Shanghai. Residents aged 40 and older were recruited and investigated by questionnaires and ophthalmic examination. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association of these risk factors with any cataract. Results: A total of 2894 subjects aged 40 years and above were included in our study. Nine hundred forty-eight people (32.8%) were diagnosed with cataract, including 845 with bilateral cataracts (29.2%) and 292 with moderate and severe visual impairment (low vision, 10.1%). There were significant differences in low vision among different age groups and gender (Χ2 age = 84.420, P age < 0.001, Χ2 gender = 7.696, P gender = 0.021). For any cataract, we found age (OR = 1.107, 95% CI: 1.094-1.120) and refractive error (OR = 1.352, 95% CI: 1.127-1.622) were independent risk factors. Conclusion: The prevalence of cataract is estimated to be nearly one-third of the sample, increasing with age. We provided further evidence that age and refractive error are independent cataract risk factors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Calliptamus italicus is a dominant species in the desert and semi-desert grassland. It is widely distributed throughout many regions such as Asia, Europe, North Africa and the Mediterranean, and has enormous destructive potential for agriculture and animal husbandry. The C. italicus overwintering as eggs in the soil through diapause, and the cold tolerance of locust eggs is the key to their ability to survive the winter smoothly to maintain the population. RESULTS: Transcriptome analysis of C. italicus eggs was carried out in this paper in constant low temperature acclimation, natural low temperature acclimation and room temperature. The differentially expressed genes related to cold tolerance were screened out, the differences in expression patterns under different low temperature acclimation were analyzed, and the genes in the significantly up-regulated pathways may play an important role in cold tolerance. The results show that different domestication modes can induce C. italicus eggs to express a large number of genes to alleviate low temperature damage, but C. italicus eggs are more sensitive to changes in temperature. Compared with the control, there are 8689 DEGs at constant low temperature and 14,994 DEGs at natural low temperature. KEGG analysis showed that DEGs were mainly enriched in pathways related to metabolism and biological systems under constant low temperature, and were mainly enriched in pathways related to biological systems and environmental information processing under natural low temperature. In addition, RNAi technology was used to further verify the regulation of genes in the significantly enriched up-regulated pathways on C. italicus eggs, and it was confirmed that the hatching rate of C. italicus eggs at low temperature was significantly reduced after interference. CONCLUSIONS: Transcriptome analysis of C. italicus eggs treated at different temperatures provided a theoretical basis for further understanding the adaptation mechanism of C. italicus eggs to low temperature. In addition, four potential RNAi target genes were verified in the eggs of C. italicus for the first time, providing new ideas for effective control of this species.

RESUMO

Ilex asprella is a plant from Aquifoliaceae. Its root is commonly used as folk medicinal materials in southern China. The chemical compositions of I. asprella are rich in pentacyclic triterpenoids, which show various biological activities and demonstrate a good prospect for drug development. The elucidation of biosynthesis mechanism of triterpenoids in I. asprella could lay important foundations for the production of these precious plant secondary metabolites by metabolic engineering. Our previous studies have revealed IaAO1 (a CYP716A210 homolog) responsible for the C-28 oxidation of α- and ß-amyrin. Herein, we reported the identification of three more cytochrome P450 monooxygenase genes IaAO2 (a CYP716A212 homolog), IaAO4 (CYP714E88), IaAO5 (CYP93A220), and a cytochrome P450 reductase gene IaCPR by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae eukaryotic expression system and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Among them, the protein encoded by IaAO2 can catalyze the C-28 oxidation of α-amyrin and ß-amyrin, IaAO4 can catalyze the C-23 oxidation of ursolic acid and oleanolic acid, while IaAO5 is responsible for the C-24 oxidation of ß-amyrin. By introducing three genes IaAO1, IaAO4 and IaCPR into S. cerevisiae. We constructed an engineered yeast strain that can produce C-23 hydroxyl ursane-type triterpenoid derivatives. This study contributes to a thorough understanding of triterpenoid biosynthesis of medicinal plants and provides important tools for further metabolic engineering.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Association between ambient air pollution and congenital heart diseases (CHDs) remains inconclusive, and the critical exposure windows has not been well studied. OBJECTIVES: This case-control study aimed to assess the effect of ambient air pollution exposure on the risk of CHDs and the subtypes in Henan, China, and further to explore potential susceptible windows. METHODS: Daily average particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5) and ≤10 µm (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O3) were collected by Chinese Air Quality Reanalysis datasets. Binary logistic regression was used to examine trimester-specific associations between per 10 µg/m3 increase in air pollutants and CHDs as well as the major subtypes. Distributed lag models incorporating logistic regression were applied to explore weekly-specific associations. RESULTS: A total of 196,069 singleton live births were included during 2013-2018, 643 CHDs were identified (3.3‰). We found that first and second trimester CO exposure increased overall CHDs risk, the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were 1.066 (1.010-1.125) and 1.065 (1.012-1.122). For CHDs subtypes, we observed that NO2 and CO in first trimester, PM2.5 and PM10 in the second trimester exposure were associated with the risk of atrial septal defect (ASD), the susceptible windows of air pollutants and ASD mainly occurred in the 1st- 6th gestational weeks. No positive association was observed for air pollution and tetralogy of Fallot. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that ambient air pollution exposure is associated with the risk of CHDs especially for ASD, and the susceptible windows generally occurred in first trimester. Further well-designed longitudinal studies are warranted to confirm our findings.

RESUMO

Gomphocerus sibiricus L., the dominant insect species in the alpine and subalpine grassland, overwinters with diapause at egg stage. In this study, cold tolerance and related cryoprotectants of G. sibiricus eggs were investigated. In particular, the supercooling point (SCP), water content, carbohydrates (trehalose, glucose, fructose, glycogen), polyols (glycerol, inositol, sorbitol), fat, and amino acids contents were evaluated at different developmental stages of G. sibiricus eggs collected under natural conditions. The SCPs of eggs were very low (-32.83 to -22.61°C) at mid-diapause. Water content gradually increased during development. The fructose, glycerol, and sorbitol contents were significantly higher in diapausing eggs than in early embryogenesis stage and post-diapause development stage. Glycogen content was high throughout the whole developmental period. The trehalose, glucose, and inositol contents were low during diapause compared to that in early embryogenesis stage and post-diapause development stage. There were no significant differences in the fat content of eggs among all development stages. The total amino acid contents in eggs in the early embryogenesis and at the start of diapause were higher than that in post-diapause eggs. The contents of Glu, Asp, Leu, Pro and Arg during diapause were significantly higher than those during post-diapause development. Results indicate that G. sibiricus eggs have a high supercooling capacity. Successful overwintering can be attributed to the accumulation of glycerol, fructose, sorbitol, and amino acids (Glu, Asp, Leu, Pro and Arg). These findings provide insight into the mechanisms underlying the adaptation of G. sibiricus to cold conditions.

RESUMO

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ON THIS TOPIC?: The morbidity and mortality of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with adverse weather and air pollution. However, COPD patients are not able to be alerted in advance of high risk environments. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This prospective controlled trial conducted in Pudong New Area of Shanghai from October 2019 to April 2020 provided evidence of COPD risk forecasting service on the reductions in visits and costs of COPD patients in outpatient and emergency departments in China for the first time. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE?: This study suggests that COPD risk forecasting service could be integrated into existing COPD management in public health to improve the health and economic outcomes.

The treatment cost for Cl- removal by Friedel's salt precipitation depended significantly on utilization rate of the precipitant aluminate. In this study, effects of Ca/Al molar ratio, reaction time, temperature and Al/Cl molar ratio were investigated to maximize Al utilization rate for Cl- removal from flue gas desulfurization wastewater. Batch results showed that the maximum Al utilization rate of 55.8-60.3% was obtained at Ca/Al ratio of 3.00, reaction time of 90 min, temperature of 35 °C and Al/Cl ratio of 0.50 regardless of the initial Cl- concentration. The precipitate obtained at the highest Al utilization rate had the highest interlayer spacing, the best crystal integrity, and the strongest binding energy of the Al-OH bond. The optimized condition made ion exchange between Cl- and OH- easier, and obtained more stable Friedel's salt structure to adsorb Cl-. Pilot-scale results showed that maximizing Al utilization rate with low dosages of precipitants had insignificant effects on the removal of Mg2+, Ca2+ and sulfate compared to the strategy to maximize Cl-, but enhanced Al utilization rate from 38.2% to 56.4%. Economic analysis showed that enhancing Al utilization rate greatly reduced treatment cost of the Friedel's salt precipitation method by 30.5%, and made the two-stage desalination process more feasible and worth popularizing.

RESUMO

Phototreatment is at the leading edge of a research hot topic as a driving force for structural transformation, spectral and electromagnetism improvements, and the functional performance of nanomaterials. Light irradiation can excite surface plasmons in noble metal nanoparticles, create electron-hole pairs, and produce charge transfer in semiconductor substrates, which have led to it being widely used in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for life sciences, environmental protection, and biological analysis. Photo-induced enhanced Raman spectroscopy (PIERS) is a new technology developed on the basis of traditional SERS and has proven to be an efficient way to resolve several critical challenges thanks to its incomparable superiority for incontiguous operation, efficient charge separation and enrichment, and a large signal enhancement for a wide range of biomolecules at the trace level. This makes PIERS a powerful technique with very appealing and promising applications in various branches of analytical science. In this review, the enhancement mechanisms of PIERS are analyzed in comparison with SERS. Afterward, the parameters influencing the enhancement of PIERS, including the substrate, light irradiation, and relaxation are discussed in detail. Finally, some perspectives on further developments of PIERS are exemplified. The PIERS technique will continue to evolve and grow with new developments and its successful application in bioanalysis and life sciences.
