RESUMO

The device performance of deep-blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) is primarily constrained by low external quantum efficiency (EQE) especially poor operational stability. Herein, we develop a facile strategy to improve deep-blue emission through rational interface engineering. We innovatively reported the novel electron transport material, 4,6-Tris(4-(diphenylphosphoryl)phenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (P-POT2T), and utilized a sequential wet-dry deposition method to form homogenic gradient interface between electron transport layer (ETL) and perovskite surface. Unlike previous reports that achieved carrier injection balance by inserting new interlayers, our strategy not only passivated uncoordinated Pb in the perovskite via P=O functional groups but also reduced interfacial carrier recombination without introducing new interfaces. Additionally, this strategy enhanced the interface contact between the perovskite and ETL, significantly boosting device stability. Consequently, the fabricated deep-blue PeLEDs delivered an external quantum efficiency (EQE) exceeding 5% (@ 460 nm) with an exceptional halftime extended to 31.3 minutes. This straightforward approach offers a new strategy to realize highly efficient especially stable PeLEDs.

Studies have shown that the inhibition of phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN)was neuroprotective against ischemia/reperfusion(I/R) injury. Bisperoxovanadium (bpV), a derivative of vanadate, is a well-established inhibitor of PTEN. However, its function islimited due to its general inadequacy in penetrating cell membranes. Mxene(Ti3C2Tx) is a novel two-dimensional lamellar nanomaterial with an excellent ability to penetrate the cell membrane. Yet, the effects of this nanomaterial on nervous system diseases have yet to be scrutinized. Here, Mxene(Ti3C2Tx) was used for the first time to carry bpV(HOpic), creating a new nanocomposite Mxene-bpV that was probed in a cerebral I/R injury model. The findings showed that this synthetic Mxene-bpV was adequately stable and can cross the cell membraneeasily. We observed that Mxene-bpV treatment significantly increased the survival rate of oxygen glucose deprivation/reperfusion(OGD/R)--insulted neurons, reduced infarct sizes and promoted the recovery of brain function after mice cerebral I/R injury. Crucially, Mxene-bpV treatment was more therapeutically efficient than bpV(HOpic) treatment alone over the same period. Mechanistically, Mxene-bpV inhibited the enzyme activity of PTEN in vitro and in vivo. It also promoted the expression of phospho-Akt (Ser473) by repressing PTEN and then activated the Akt pathway to boost cell survival. Additionally, in PTEN transgenic mice, Mxene-bpV suppressed I/R-induced inflammatory response by promoting M2 microglial polarization through PTEN inhibition. Collectively, the nanosynthetic Mxene-bpV inhibited PTEN' enzymatic activity by activating Akt pathway and promoting M2 microglial polarization, and finally exerted neuroprotection against cerebral I/R injury.

BACKGROUND: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Scoping Review Guidelines were used to conduct a scoping review of weight loss interventions for patients with prostate cancer, with the goal to ascertain the impact of these interventions on body weight, body composition, metabolic biomarkers, and prostate cancer-related outcomes. METHODS: Six bibliographical databases were searched. Eligible studies included articles reporting weight loss behavioral interventions with at least dietary change as an intervention component, body weight as an outcome, and interventions not solely focused on weight loss maintenance. Patients with prostate cancer of any stage were included. At least 2 independent reviewers used a data-charting form to extract study characteristics and results. RESULTS: A total of 12 studies were included. The sample consisted predominately of White patients with prostate cancer (multiple stages) in the United States. Most interventions included both dietary and physical activity components and were delivered 1-on-1 in-person and/or by telephone. Most of the studies reported that participants experienced significant weight loss and beneficial body composition changes, with a higher proportion of studies with a longer intervention period and dose (time) reporting greater magnitude of changes in outcomes. There were mixed results regarding the interventions' impact on metabolic biomarkers and prostate cancer-related outcomes. DISCUSSION: Understanding the impact of weight loss interventions on patients with prostate cancer is important. Studies including metabolic biomarkers, prostate cancer outcomes, and more diverse populations are needed.

Iron-anchored nitrogen/doped carbon single-atom nanozymes (Fe-N/C), which possess homogeneous active sites and adjustable catalytic environment, represent an exemplary model for investigating the structure-function relationship and catalytic activity. However, the development of pyrolysis-free synthesis technique for Fe-N/C with adjustable enzyme-mimicking activity still presents a significant challenge. Herein, Fe-N/C anchored three carrier morphologies were created via a pyrolysis-free approach by covalent organic polymers. The peroxidase-like activity of these Fe-N/C nanozymes was regulated via the pores of the anchored carrier, resulting in varying electron transfer efficiency due to disparities in contact efficacy between substrates and catalytic sites within diverse microenvironments. Additionally, a colorimetric sensor array for identifying antioxidants was developed: (1) the Fe-N/C catalytically oxidized two substrates TMB and ABTS, respectively; (2) the development of a colorimetric sensor array utilizing oxTMB and oxABTS as sensing channels enabled accurate discrimination of antioxidants such as ascorbic acid (AsA), glutathione (GSH), cysteine (Cys), gallic acid (GA), and caffeic acid (CA). Subsequently, the sensor array underwent rigorous testing to validate its performance, including assessment of antioxidant mixtures and individual antioxidants at varying concentrations, as well as target antioxidants and interfering substances. In general, the present study offered valuable insights into the active origin and rational design of nanozyme materials, and highlighting their potential applications in food analysis.

BACKGROUND: Antidepressants are among the most commonly prescribed medications, but evidence on comparative weight change for specific first-line treatments is limited. OBJECTIVE: To compare weight change across common first-line antidepressant treatments by emulating a target trial. DESIGN: Observational cohort study over 24 months. SETTING: Electronic health record (EHR) data from 2010 to 2019 across 8 U.S. health systems. PARTICIPANTS: 183 118 patients. MEASUREMENTS: Prescription data determined initiation of treatment with sertraline, citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine, bupropion, duloxetine, or venlafaxine. The investigators estimated the population-level effects of initiating each treatment, relative to sertraline, on mean weight change (primary) and the probability of gaining at least 5% of baseline weight (secondary) 6 months after initiation. Inverse probability weighting of repeated outcome marginal structural models was used to account for baseline confounding and informative outcome measurement. In secondary analyses, the effects of initiating and adhering to each treatment protocol were estimated. RESULTS: Compared with that for sertraline, estimated 6-month weight gain was higher for escitalopram (difference, 0.41 kg [95% CI, 0.31 to 0.52 kg]), paroxetine (difference, 0.37 kg [CI, 0.20 to 0.54 kg]), duloxetine (difference, 0.34 kg [CI, 0.22 to 0.44 kg]), venlafaxine (difference, 0.17 kg [CI, 0.03 to 0.31 kg]), and citalopram (difference, 0.12 kg [CI, 0.02 to 0.23 kg]); similar for fluoxetine (difference, -0.07 kg [CI, -0.19 to 0.04 kg]); and lower for bupropion (difference, -0.22 kg [CI, -0.33 to -0.12 kg]). Escitalopram, paroxetine, and duloxetine were associated with 10% to 15% higher risk for gaining at least 5% of baseline weight, whereas bupropion was associated with 15% reduced risk. When the effects of initiation and adherence were estimated, associations were stronger but had wider CIs. Six-month adherence ranged from 28% (duloxetine) to 41% (bupropion). LIMITATION: No data on medication dispensing, low medication adherence, incomplete data on adherence, and incomplete data on weight measures across time points. CONCLUSION: Small differences in mean weight change were found between 8 first-line antidepressants, with bupropion consistently showing the least weight gain, although adherence to medications over follow-up was low. Clinicians could consider potential weight gain when initiating antidepressant treatment. PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: National Institutes of Health.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate differences in cervical lymph node image quality on dual-energy computed tomography (CT) scan with datasets reconstructed using filter back projection (FBP), hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR), and deep learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR) in patients with head and neck cancer. Method: Seventy patients with head and neck cancer underwent follow-up contrast-enhanced dual-energy CT examinations. All datasets were reconstructed using FBP, hybrid IR with 30 % adaptive statistical IR (ASiR-V), and DLIR with three selectable levels (low, medium, and high) at 2.5- and 0.625-mm slice thicknesses. Herein, signal, image noise, signal-to-noise ratio, and contrast-to-noise ratio of lymph nodes and overall image quality, artifact, and noise of selected regions of interest were evaluated by two radiologists. Next, cervical lymph node sharpness was evaluated using full width at half maximum. Results: DLIR exhibited significantly reduced noise, ranging from 3.8 % to 35.9 % with improved signal-to-noise ratio (11.5-105.6 %) and contrast-to-noise ratio (10.5-107.5 %) compared with FBP and ASiR-V, for cervical lymph nodes (p < 0.001). Further, 0.625-mm-thick images reconstructed using DLIR-medium and DLIR-high had a lower noise than 2.5-mm-thick images reconstructed using FBP and ASiR-V. The lymph node margins and vessels on DLIR-medium and DLIR-high were sharper than those on FBP and ASiR-V (p < 0.05). Both readers agreed that DLIR had a better image quality than the conventional reconstruction algorithms. Conclusion: DLIR-medium and -high provided superior cervical lymph node image quality in head and neck CT. Improved image quality affords thin-slice DLIR images for dose-reduction protocols in the future.

Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) are a group of deadly malignancies encompassing intrahepatic and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder carcinoma, and ampullary carcinoma. Here, we present the integrative analysis of 63 BTC cell lines via multi-omics clustering and genome- scale CRISPR screens, providing a platform to illuminate BTC biology and inform therapeutic development. We identify dependencies broadly enriched in BTC compared to other cancers as well as dependencies selective to the anatomic subtypes. Notably, cholangiocarcinoma cell lines are stratified into distinct lineage subtypes based on biliary or dual biliary/hepatocyte marker signatures, associated with dependency on specific lineage survival factors. Transcriptional analysis of patient specimens demonstrates the prognostic significance of these lineage subtypes. Additionally, we delineate strategies to enhance targeted therapies or to overcome resistance in cell lines with key driver gene mutations. Furthermore, clustering based on dependencies and proteomics data elucidates unexpected functional relationships, including a BTC subgroup with partial squamous differentiation. Thus, this cell line atlas reveals potential therapeutic targets in molecularly defined BTCs, unveils biologically distinct disease subtypes, and offers a vital resource for BTC research.

BACKGROUND: The risks associated with negative doctor-patient relationships have seriously hindered the healthy development of medical and healthcare and aroused widespread concern in society. The number of public comments on doctor-patient relationship risk events reflects the degree to which the public pays attention to such events. AIM: To explore public emotional differences, the intensity of comments, and the positions represented at different levels of doctor-patient disputes. METHODS: Thirty incidents of doctor-patient disputes were collected from Weibo and TikTok, and 3655 related comments were extracted. The number of comment sentiment words was extracted, and the comment sentiment value was calculated. The Kruskal-Wallis H test was used to compare differences between each variable group at different levels of incidence. Spearman's correlation analysis was used to examine associations between variables. Regression analysis was used to explore factors influencing scores of comments on incidents. RESULTS: The study results showed that public comments on media reports of doctor-patient disputes at all levels are mainly dominated by "good" and "disgust" emotional states. There was a significant difference in the comment scores and the number of partial emotion words between comments on varying levels of severity of doctor-patient disputes. The comment score was positively correlated with the number of emotion words related to positive, good, and happy) and negatively correlated with the number of emotion words related to negative, anger, disgust, fear, and sadness. CONCLUSION: The number of emotion words related to negative, anger, disgust, fear, and sadness directly influences comment scores, and the severity of the incident level indirectly influences comment scores.

Background: Necrotizing soft-tissue infection (NSTI) is a rare and serious disease with high morbidity and mortality. Standard therapeutic concepts have included urgent surgical intervention, broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment, and intensive care. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is used as adjuvant therapy in some centers, but its benefits remain controversial. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted in which 98 patients with a clinical diagnosis of NSTI were treated with standard treatments plus HBOT. The clinical outcomes were wound healing, performance status, hospital length, complication rate, recurrence rate, morbidity (amputation rate), and mortality. Primary or secondary outcomes were compared between the time interval of HBOT and the clinical outcomes. Results: The average times from diagnosis of NSTI to initial HBO treatment and from initial surgery to initial HBO treatment were both significantly longer in dead patients than in surviving patients (P = 0.031; P = 0.020). These two time intervals were both significantly longer in amputated patients than in preserved patients (P = 0.031; P = 0.037). Conclusions: Using combined treatment with early surgical debridement combined with HBOT, it is possible to reduce hospital stay, intensive care unit stay, number of debridements, improve complete wound healing rate, and lower amputation and mortality rates among patients with NSTI. The early onset of HBOT soon after diagnosis, especially during critical conditions, is proved to be associated with higher survival and preservation rates.

While flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is recognized as an attractive desalination technology, its practical implementation has been hindered by the ease of scaling and energy-intensive nature of the single-cell FCDI system, particularly when treating brackish water with elevated levels of naturally coexisting SO42- and Ca2+. To overcome these obstacles, we propose and design an innovative ion-selective metathesis FCDI (ISM-FCDI) system, consisting of a two-stage tailored cell design. Results indicate that the specific energy consumption per unit volume of water for the ISM-FCDI is lower (by up to ∼50%) than that of a conventional single-stage FCDI due to the parallel circuit structure of the ISM-FCDI. Additionally, the ISM-FCDI benefits from a conspicuous disparity in the selective removal of ions at each stage. The separate storage of Ca2+ and SO42- by the metathesis process in the ISM-FCDI (46.25% Ca2+, 14.25% SO42- in electrode 1 and 4.75% Ca2+, 35.25% SO42- in electrode 2) can effectively prevent scaling. Furthermore, configuration-performance analysis on the ion-selective migration suggests that the properties of the ion exchange membrane, rather than the carbon species, govern the selectivity of ion removal. This work introduces system-level enhancements aimed at enhancing energy conservation and scaling prevention, providing critical optimization of the FCDI for brackish water softening.

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of non-steroid mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (ns-MRAs) and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Methods: Systematic literature searches were performed using PubMed, Embase and Web of Science encompassing inception until January 20, 2024. Randomized control trials (RCTs) comparing ns-MRAs and SGLT2is in DKD were selected. The efficacy outcomes of interest included kidney-specific composite outcome, cardiovascular (CV)-specific composite outcome, end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), and overall mortality. We also investigated safety outcomes, including acute kidney injury (AKI) and hyperkalemia. Results: A total of 10 randomized clinical trials with 35,786 patients applying various treatments were included. SGLT2is (SUCRA 99.84%) have potential superiority in kidney protection. SGLT2is (RR 1.41, 95%CI 1.26 to 1.57) and ns-MRAs (RR 1.17, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.27) were associated with significantly lower kidney-specific composite outcome than the placebo. Regarding the reduction in CV-specific composite outcome and ESKD, SGLT2is (SUCRA 91.61%; 91.38%) have potential superiority in playing cardiorenal protection. Concerning the CV-specific composite outcome (RR 1.27, 95%CI 1.09 to 1.43) and ESKD (RR 1.43, 95%CI 1.20 to 1.72), SGLT2is significantly reduced the risks compared to placebo. Regarding the reduction in overall mortality, SGLT2is (SUCRA 83.03%) have potential superiority in postponing mortality. Concerning the overall mortality, SGLT2is have comparable effects (RR 1.27, 95%CI 1.09 to 1.43) with placebo to reduce the risk of overall mortality compared to placebo. For AKI reduction, ns-MRAs (SUCRA 63.58%) have potential superiority. SGLT2is have comparable effects (RR 1.24, 95%CI 1.05 to 1.46) with placebo to reduce the risk of AKI. For hyperkalemia reduction, SGLT2is (SUCRA 93.12%) have potential superiority. SGLT2is have comparable effects (RR 1.24, 95%CI 1.05 to 1.46) with placebo to reduce the risk of AKI. Concerning hyperkalemia reduction, nsMRAs (RR 1.24 95%CI 0.39 to 3.72) and SGLT2is (RR 1.01 95%CI 0.40 to 3.02) did not show significant benefit compared to placebo. Conclusion: Concerning the efficacy and safety outcomes, SGLT2is may be recommended as a treatment regimen for maximizing kidney and cardiovascular protection, with a minimal risk of hyperkalemia in DKD. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Dingxian Pill (DXP), a famous traditional Chinese medicine prescription, and has been widely proven to have positive therapeutic effects on "Xianzheng" (the name of epilepsy in ancient China). However, the anti-epileptic molecular mechanisms of DXP are not yet fully understood and remain to be further investigated. AIM OF THE STUDY: To elucidate the molecular mechanism of DXP's improvement in epileptic neuronal loss, damage and apoptosis by regulating TNF-α/TNFR1 signaling pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty Kunming mice were randomly divided in 6 groups: control group (equal volume of normal saline), model group (180 mg kg-1 pilocarpine hydrochloride - used to establish the epilepsy animal model), carbamazepine group (30 mg kg-1), and low, medium, and high-dose Dingxian Pill groups (4.08, 8.16, and 16.32 g kg-1, respectively - oral administration once daily for 2 weeks). Successful establishment of the epileptic mouse model was monitored with electroencephalography. Pathological changes in hippocampal tissue were analyzed with hematoxylin-eosin staining. Hippocampal neuronal apoptosis was analyzed with TUNEL staining. TNF-α, TNFR1, TRADD, FADD, and caspase-8 mRNA and protein expression levels in hippocampal tissue were analyzed with real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, immunohistochemistry, and Western blot, respectively. Cleaved caspase-8 protein levels in hippocampal tissue were measured with immunohistochemistry and Western blot. RESULTS: Compared to control, the model group showed an increase in continuous epileptic discharge waves on EEG, a damaged hippocampal neuron morphological structure, increased hippocampal neuronal apoptosis, and significantly increased TNF-α, TNFR1, TRADD, FADD, and caspase-8 mRNA and protein levels, and increased caspase-8 cleavage (P < 0.05). Compared to the model group, the carbamazepine group as well as the low-, medium-, and high-dose Dingxian Pill groups showed decreased epileptic discharges on EEG, an obvious hippocampal neuron morphological structure restoration, varying degrees of attenuated hippocampal neuronal apoptosis, and significantly decreased TNF-α, TNFR1, TRADD, FADD, and caspase-8 mRNA and protein levels as well as decreased caspase-8 cleavage (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Dingxian Pill exerts an anti-epileptic effect through inhibition of TNF-α/TNFR1 signaling pathway-mediated apoptosis in hippocampal neurons.

The 2018 World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research recommends sustained strategies of physical activity and diet for cancer prevention, but evidence for long-term prostate cancer risk is limited. Using observational data from 27,859 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, we emulated a target trial of recommendation-based physical activity and dietary strategies and 26-year risks of prostate cancer, adjusting for risk factors via the parametric g-formula. Compared with no intervention, limiting sugar-sweetened beverages showed a 0.4% (0.0-0.9%) lower risk of lethal (metastatic or fatal) disease and 0.5% (0.1-0.9%) lower risk of fatal disease. Restricting consumption of processed foods showed a 0.4-0.9% higher risk of all prostate cancer outcomes. Estimated risk differences for clinically significant disease were close to null for strategies involving fruits and non-starchy vegetables, whole grains and legumes, red meat, and processed meat, as well as under a joint strategy of physical activity and diet. Compared with a "low adherence" strategy, maintaining recommended physical activity levels showed a 0.4% (0.1-0.8%) lower risk of lethal and 0.5% (0.2-0.8%) lower risk of fatal disease. Adhering to specific components of current physical activity and dietary recommendations may help to prevent lethal and fatal prostate cancer over 26 years.

Molecular materials possessing switchable magneto-optical properties are of great interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and molecular devices. However, switching their photoluminescence (PL) and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior via light-induced structural changes still constitutes a formidable challenge. Here, a series of cubane structures were synthesized via self-assembly of 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (HAC) and rare-earth ions. All complexes exhibited obvious photochromic phenomena and complete PL quenching upon Xe lamp irradiation, which were realized via the synergistic effect of photogenerated radicals and [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of the AC components. The quenched PL showed the largest fluorescence intensity change (99.72%) in electron-transfer photochromic materials. A reversible decoloration process was realized via mechanical grinding, which is unexpectedly in the electron-transfer photochromic materials. Importantly, an SMM behavior of the Dy analog was observed after room-temperature irradiation due to the photocycloaddition of AC ligands and the photogenerated stable radicals changed the electrostatic ligand field and magnetic coupling. Moreover, based on the remarkably photochromic and photoluminescent properties of these compounds, 2 demos were applied to support their application in information anti-counterfeiting and inkless printing. This work, for the first time utilizing the simultaneous modulation of photocycloaddition and photogenerated radicals in one system, realizes complete PL quenching and light-induced SMM behavior, providing a dynamical switch for the construction of multifunctional polymorphic materials with optical response and optical storage devices.

Background: Due to the widespread use of computed tomography (CT) screening and advances in diagnostic techniques, an increasing number of patients with multiple pulmonary nodules are being detected and pathologically diagnosed as synchronous multiple primary lung cancers (sMPLC). It has become a new challenge to treat multiple pulmonary nodules and obtain a favorable prognosis while minimizing the perioperative risk for patients. The purpose of this study was to summarize the preliminary experience with a hybrid surgery combining pulmonary resection and ablation for the treatment of sMPLC and to discuss the feasibility of this novel procedure with a literature review. Methods: This is a retrospective non-randomized controlled study. From January 1, 2022 to July 1, 2023, four patients underwent hybrid surgery combining thoracoscopic pulmonary resection and percutaneous pulmonary ablation for multiple pulmonary nodules. Patients were followed up at 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively and the last follow-up was on November 30, 2023. Clinical characteristics, perioperative outcomes, pulmonary function recovery and oncologic prognosis were recorded. Meanwhile we did a literature review of studies on hybridized pulmonary surgery for the treatment of multiple pulmonary nodules. Results: All the four patients were female, aged 52 to 70 years, and had no severe cardiopulmonary dysfunction on preoperative examination. Hybrid surgery of simultaneous pulmonary resection and ablation were performed in these patients to treat 2 to 4 pulmonary nodules, assisted by intraoperative real-time guide of C-arm X-ray machine. The operation time was from 155 to 240 minutes, and intraoperative blood loss was from 50 to 200 mL. Postoperative hospital stay was 2 to 7 days, thoracic drainage duration was 2 to 6 days, and pleural drainage volume was 300-1,770 mL. One patient presented with a bronchopleural fistula due to pulmonary ablation; the fistula was identified and sutured during thoracoscopic surgery and the patient recovered well. No postoperative 90-day complications occurred. After 3 months postoperatively, performance status scores for these patients recovered to 80 to 100. No tumor recurrence or metastasis was detected during the follow-up period. Conclusions: Hybrid procedures combining minimally invasive pulmonary resection with ablation are particularly suitable for the simultaneous treatment of sMPLC. Patients had less loss of pulmonary function, fewer perioperative complications, and favorable oncologic prognosis. Hybrid surgery is expected to be a better treatment option for patients with sMPLC.

BACKGROUND: Intensive lifestyle interventions including modest reductions in daily caloric intake (i.e., continuous calorie energy reduction (CER)), are recommended by U.S. national professional health organizations (e.g. American Heart Association). However, they are less effective in Black communities. A burgeoning literature has reported the promise of intermittent fasting (IF) as an alternative strategy for weight loss. However, IF studies have been conducted with predominately White participants and provided participants resources not readily available in real-world situations. OBJECTIVE: Weight loss and weight-related outcomes of a scalable (able to be widely disseminated and implemented) IF intervention developed with and for Black adults were compared to a CER intervention for the purpose of determining IF's feasibility (initial effectiveness, adherence, acceptance) in a Black community. DESIGN: A cluster randomized controlled pilot study was conducted. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: A total of 42 Black adults with a BMI≥25 were recruited from five Black churches (3 IF churches, 2 CER churches) in Western New York State from September 2021 until May 2022. Participants were free of medical conditions that might have contraindicated participation in a weight reduction program and other factors that might affect weight loss. INTERVENTIONS: Community health workers delivered the 6-month, 16-session faith-based IF and CER interventions. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was feasibility, consisting of initial effectiveness on body weight (percent body weight lost from baseline to 6-month follow-up), adherence, and acceptability. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Descriptive statistics and linear mixed models accounting for within-church clustering were used. A baseline covariate corresponding to the outcome variable was included in the model. Intent-to-treat analysis was used. RESULTS: There was statistically significant weight loss within both arms [IF: -3.5 (-6, -0.9)]; [CER: -2.9 (-5.1, -0.8) kg], from baseline to 6-month follow-up. Compared to CER, IF led to significantly lower daily energy intake [414.2 (55.2, 773.2) kcal] and fat intake [16.1 (2.4, 29.8) g]. IF may result in lower fruit and vegetable intake [-103.2 (-200.9, -5.5) g] and fiber intake -5.4 (-8.7, -2) compared to CER. Participants in the IF arm completed 3.8 (1.4) more self-monitoring booklets compared to those in the CER arm (p=0.02). Participants reported high levels of satisfaction with the program. CONCLUSIONS: An IF intervention developed with and for Black adults can be feasibly implemented in Black churches. Larger studies need to be conducted to ascertain the extent IF can serve as a viable weight loss alternative to CER interventions in Black communities.

A priority of nutrition science is to identify dietary determinants of health and disease to inform effective public health policies, guidelines, and clinical interventions. Yet, conflicting findings in synthesizing evidence from randomized trials and observational data has contributed to confusion and uncertainty. Often, heterogeneity can be explained by the fact that seemingly similar bodies of evidence are asking very different questions. Improving the alignment within and between research domains begins with investigators clearly defining their diet-disease questions; however, nutritional exposures are complex and often require a greater degree of specificity. First, dietary data are compositional, meaning a change in a food may imply a compensatory change of other foods. Second, dietary data are multidimensional; that is, the primary components (i.e., foods) are comprised of sub-components (e.g., nutrients), and sub-components can be present in multiple primary components. Third, because diet is a lifelong exposure, the composition of a study population's background diet has implications on the interpretation of the exposure and the transportability of effect estimates. Collectively clarifying these key aspects of inherently complex dietary exposures when conducting research will facilitate appropriate evidence synthesis, improve certainty of evidence, and improve the ability of these efforts to inform policy and decision-making.

After polymer flooding, the heterogeneity between different layers intensifies, forming intricate seepage channels and fluid diversions, which results in decreased circulation efficiency and lower recovery rates, leaving a significant amount of residual oil trapped within the reservoir. Understanding the characteristics of residual oil occurrence is crucial for enhancing oil recovery post-polymer flooding. This study focused on sandstone reservoirs with varying permeability in the Saertu block of the Daqing oilfield. Using cryosectioning and laser scanning confocal microscopy, the occurrence characteristics of the residual oil in these sandstone reservoirs post-polymer flooding were investigated. Additionally, micro-CT and scanning electron microscopy were employed to analyze the impact of the pore structure on the distribution characteristics of the residual oil. The results indicate that laser scanning confocal images reveal that post-polymer flooding, the residual oil in high- and low-permeability sandstone reservoirs predominantly exists in a bound state (average > 47%), mostly as particle-adsorbed oil. In contrast, the residual oil in medium-permeability reservoirs is primarily in a free state (average > 49%), mostly as intergranular-adsorbed oil. In high-permeability sandstone reservoirs, heavy oil components are mainly in a particle-adsorbed form; in medium-permeability sandstone reservoirs, residual oil predominantly consists of heavy components, with most light components occurring in a clustered form; in low-permeability sandstone reservoirs, clustered residual oil exists in a balanced coexistence of light and heavy components, while the heavy components primarily exist in a particle-adsorbed form. Post-polymer flooding, the large pore-throat structure in high-permeability sandstone reservoirs results in effective displacement and less free residual oil; medium-permeability sandstone reservoirs, with medium-large pores and throats, have preferential channels and fine particles blocking the throats, leading to some unswept pores and more free residual oil; low-permeability sandstone reservoirs, with small pores and throats, exhibit weak displacement forces and poor mobility, resulting in more bound residual oil. The distribution and content of clay particles and clay minerals, along with the complex microscopic pore structure, are the main factors causing the differences in the residual oil occurrence states in sandstones with varying permeability.

We present conservative estimates for the marginal value of public funds (MVPF) associated with providing Medicaid to inmates exiting prison. The MVPF measures the ratio between a policy's social benefits and its governmental costs. Our MVPF estimates suggest that every additional $1 the government spends on providing inmates exiting prison with Medicaid coverage can result in social benefits ranging between $3.45 and $10.62. A large proportion of the benefits we consider stems from the reduced future criminal involvement among former inmates who receive Medicaid. Employing a difference-in-differences approach, we find that Medicaid expansions reduce the average number of times a released inmate is reimprisoned within 1 year by approximately 11.5%. By combining this estimate with key values reported elsewhere (e.g., victimization costs, data on victimization and incarceration), we quantify specific benefits arising from the policy. These encompass diminished criminal harm due to lower reoffense rates, direct benefits to former inmates through Medicaid coverage, increased employment opportunities, and reduced loss of liberty resulting from fewer future reimprisonments. Net-costs consist of the cost of providing Medicaid net of changes in the governmental cost of imprisonment, changes in the tax revenue due to increased employment, and changes in spending on other public assistance programs. We interpret our estimates as conservative since we deliberately err on the side of under-estimating benefits and over-estimating costs when data on specific items are imprecise or incomplete. Our findings align closely with others in the sparse literature investigating the crime-related welfare impacts of Medicaid access, underscoring the substantial indirect benefits public health insurance programs can offer through crime reduction, in addition to their direct health-related advantages.
