OBJECTIVE: To compare the outcomes of intelligent first-aid training based on virtual reality (VR) among individuals with different demographic characteristics. METHODS: A total of 50 nonmedical professional volunteers from Nanchang were conveniently sampled in March 2021. All participants underwent intelligent VR first-aid training, and a comparative analysis was conducted by dividing them into different groups based on demographic characteristics. RESULTS: Male participants had a lower chest compression interruption time compared to female participants (7.40 ± 0.50 vs. 8.04 ± 0.56, t = -4.231, p < 0.001). Additionally, male participants had a higher proportion of compressions with correct compression depth (81.33 ± 1.24 vs. 79.78 ± 1.48, t = 4.038, p < 0.001), higher mean ventilation volume (518.11 ± 1.50 vs. 516.61 ± 2.17, t = 2.881, p = 0.006), and higher theoretical knowledge test score (8.74 ± 0.59 vs. 8.00 ± 0.43, t = 4.981, p < 0.001). There were statistically significant differences in the mean chest compression frequency (110.38 ± 5.74 vs. 105.00 ± 4.78 vs. 107.80 ± 5.97, F = 5.187, p = 0.009) among participants with different educational backgrounds. Pairwise comparisons showed that technical degree holders had a higher mean chest compression frequency than bachelor's degree holders, whereas no statistically significant difference was observed between master's degree holders and bachelor's degree holders. CONCLUSION: The outcomes of first-aid training differ among participants of different genders and with different educational backgrounds. With all participants meeting the training qualifications, it is believed that the application of intelligent VR first-aid training platforms can improve the first aid capabilities of the public.

BACKGROUND: The binary diagnosis of Metabolic Syndrome(MetS) fails to accurately evaluate its severity, and the association between MetS severity and frailty progression remains inadequately elucidated. This study aims to clarify the relationship between the severity of MetS and the progression of frailty among the middle-aged and elderly population in China. METHOD: Participants from the 2011-2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS) were included for a longitudinal analysis. The study employs a frailty index(FI) based on 32 health deficits to diagnose frailty and to assess FI trajectories. An age-sex-ethnicity-specific MetS scoring model (MetS score) was used to assess metabolic syndrome severity in Chinese adults. The Cumulative MetS score from 2012 to 2015 was calculated using the formula: (MetS score in wave 1 + MetS score in wave 3) / 2 × time(2015 - 2012). The association between MetS score, Cumulative MetS score, and the risk and trajectory of frailty were evaluated using Cox regression/logistic regression, and linear mixed models. Restricted Cubic Splines(RCS) models were utilized to detect potential non-linear associations. RESULTS: A higher MetS score was significantly associated with an increased risk of frailty(HR per 1 SD increase = 1.205; 95%CI: 1.14 to 1.273) and an accelerated FI trajectory(ß per 1 SD increase = 0.113 per year; 95%CI: 0.075 to 0.15 per year). Evaluating changes in MetS score using a Cumulative MetS score indicated that each 1 SD increase in the Cumulative MetS score increased the risk of frailty by 22.2%(OR = 1.222; 95%CI: 1.133 to 1.319) and accelerated the rate of increase in FI(ß = 0.098 per year; 95%CI: 0.058 to 0.138 per year). RCS model results demonstrated a dose-response curve relationship between MetS score and Cumulative MetS score with frailty risk. Stratified analysis showed consistency across subgroups. The interaction results indicate that in males and individuals under aged 60, MetS score may accelerate the increase in FI, a finding consistent across both models. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings underscore the positive correlation between the severity of MetS and frailty progression in the middle-aged and elderly, highlighting the urgent need for early identification of MetS and targeted interventions to reduce the risk of frailty.

Objective: Several circulating microRNAs, including microRNA-126-3p, have been identified as diagnostic and prognostic biomarker of cardiovascular disease. However, whether microRNA-126-3p is an independent risk predictor for coronary artery calcification is unclear. Methods: In this prospective single-center study, we collected blood samples from coronary artery atherosclerosis patients (n = 54), patients with coronary artery calcification (n = 33) and controls (n = 56). Total RNA was extracted from plasma and blood cells with TRIzol reagents. The microRNA-126-3p level was determined via quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: MicroRNA-126-3p levels were significantly increased in patients with coronary artery calcification than in coronary artery atherosclerosis patients or controls. The highest expression of microRNA-126-3p was observed in patients with moderate calcification who were diagnosed with Grade 2 calcification by coronary angiography. Age, microRNA-126-3p expression in veins, hypertension and diabetes significantly influence the occurrence of coronary artery calcification, among which diabetes and venous microRNA-126-3p expression were found to be independent risk factors for coronary artery calcification. Conclusions: Taken together, the data in this study suggest that circulating microRNA-126-3p may be a novel noninvasive biomarker for coronary artery calcification. Regulating microRNA-126-3p expression may be an effective and promising strategy for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, especially coronary artery calcification.

BACKGROUND: The association between obesity and depressive symptoms remains controversial. The Weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) shows advantages in assessing central obesity. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal relationship between WWI and depressive symptoms. METHOD: This prospective cohort study utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) spanning 2011-2020. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depressive Symptoms Scale (CESD-10) scores. Linear mixed models were used to examine longitudinal associations. RESULTS: A total of 6835 participants over the age of 45 were included. WWI was positively associated with CESD-10 scores (ß per 1 SD increase = 0.052SD; 95%CI: 0.021 to 0.083SD) and was linked to a faster increase in CESD-10 scores over time (ß = 0.095SD/year; 95%CI: 0.090 to 0.100 SD/year). Conversely, BMI was negatively associated with CESD-10 scores (ß per 1 SD increase = -0.067SD; 95%CI: -0.097 to -0.038SD). However, the negative association between BMI and CESD-10 scores weakened over time (ß per 1 SD increase = 0.008SD/y; 95%CI: 0.003 to 0.013 SD/y). Nonlinear associations were detected between both WWI and BMI with CESD-10 scores. LIMITATIONS: Self-reported depressive symptoms assessments may have introduced information bias. The observational design limits ruling out unobserved confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight the association between WWI and the long-term progression of depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older adults. WWI may enhance our understanding of the link between obesity and depressive symptoms and could be superior to BMI in predicting depressive symptom progression.

The contractile function of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) typically undergoes significant changes with advancing age, leading to severe vascular aging-related diseases. The precise role and mechanism of stromal interaction molecule-1 (STIM1) in age-mediated Ca2+ signaling and vasocontraction remain unclear. The connection between STIM1 and age-related vascular dysfunction was investigated using a multi-myograph system, immunohistochemical analysis, protein blotting, and SA-ß-gal staining. Results showed that vasoconstrictor responses in the thoracic aorta, intrarenal artery, and coronary artery decreased with age. STIM1 knockdown in the intrarenal and coronary arteries reduced vascular tone in young mice, while no change was observed in the thoracic aorta. A significant reduction in vascular tone occurred in the STIM1 knockout group with nifedipine. In the thoracic aorta, vasoconstriction significantly decreased with age following the use of nifedipine and thapsigargin and almost disappeared after STIM1 knockdown. The proportion of senescent VSMCs increased significantly in aged mice and further increased in sm-STIM1 KO aged mice. Moreover, the expression of senescence markers p21, p16, and IL-6 significantly increased with age, with p21 expression further increased in the STIM1 knockdown aged group, but not p16 or IL-6. These findings indicate that different arteries exhibit distinct organ-specific features and that STIM1 downregulation may contribute to age-related vasoconstrictive dysfunction through activation of the p21 pathway.

Human cortical neurons (hCNs) exhibit high dendritic complexity and synaptic density, and the maturation process is greatly protracted. However, the molecular mechanism governing these specific features remains unclear. Here, we report that the hominoid-specific gene TBC1D3 promotes dendritic arborization and protracts the pace of synaptogenesis. Ablation of TBC1D3 in induced hCNs causes reduction of dendritic growth and precocious synaptic maturation. Forced expression of TBC1D3 in the mouse cortex protracts synaptic maturation while increasing dendritic growth. Mechanistically, TBC1D3 functions via interaction with MICAL1, a monooxygenase that mediates oxidation of actin filament. At the early stage of differentiation, the TBC1D3/MICAL1 interaction in the cytosol promotes dendritic growth via F-actin oxidation and enhanced actin dynamics. At late stages, TBC1D3 escorts MICAL1 into the nucleus and downregulates the expression of genes related with synaptic maturation through interaction with the chromatin remodeling factor ATRX. Thus, this study delineates the molecular mechanisms underlying human neuron development.

The impacts of straw removal on rice Cd absorption, behaviour of Cd and microbial community in rhizosphere soil were investigated in paddy fields over two consecutive seasons. The results of the experiments in two fields revealed that straw removal promoted the transformation of soil Cd from acid-extractable and oxidisable fraction to residual fraction and reduced soil DTPA-Cd content with the reduction in DOC and Cd ions in soil porewater, thereby decreasing Cd content in rice. Specifically, the Cd content in brown rice was below 0.2 mg·kg-1 when all rice straw and roots were removed in the slightly Cd-contaminated soils. The α-diversity of soil microbial communities was less influenced by continuous straw removal, ß-diversity was altered and the relative abundances of Anaeromyxobacter, Methylocystis and Mycobacterium microbes were increased. Redundancy analysis and network analysis exhibited that soil pH predominantly influenced the microbial community. Path analysis revealed that the Cd content in brown rice could be directly influenced by the soil Total-Cd and DTPA-Cd, as well as soil pH and OM. Straw removal, including roots removal, is an economical and effective technique to reduce Cd accumulation in rice plants.

The regenerative potential of injured axons displays considerable heterogeneity. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the heterogeneity have not been fully elucidated. Here, we establish a method that can separate spinal motor neurons (spMNs) with low and high regenerative capacities and identify a set of transcripts revealing differential expression between two groups of neurons. Interestingly, oligodendrocyte transcription factor 1 (Olig1), which regulates the differentiation of various neuronal progenitors, exhibits recurrent expression in spMNs with enhanced regenerative capabilities. Furthermore, overexpression of Olig1 (Olig1 OE) facilitates axonal regeneration in various models, and down-regulation or deletion of Olig1 exhibits an opposite effect. By analyzing the overlapped differentially expressed genes after expressing individual Olig factor and functional validation, we find that the role of Olig1 is at least partially through the neurite extension factor 1 (Nrsn1). We therefore identify Olig1 as an intrinsic factor that promotes regenerative capacity of injured axons.

PURPOSE: To validate the Graves ophthalmopathy quality of life (GO-QOL) questionnaire in screening DON and to construct an effective model. METHODS: A total of 194 GO patients were recruited and divided into DON and non-DON (mild and moderate-to-severe) groups. Eye examinations were performed, and quality of life was assessed by the GO-QOL questionnaire. The random forest, decision tree model, receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve, accuracy and Brier score were determined by R software. RESULTS: In GO-QOL, age, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), exophthalmos, CAS, severity, and Gorman score were found to be factors related to visual function scores. On the appearance scale, gender, duration of GO, BCVA, exophthalmos, CAS and severity of GO were relevant. Both the visual function scores and appearance scores were significantly lower in DON groups than in non-DON groups (33.18 ± 24.54 versus 81.26 ± 17.39, 60.08 ± 24.82 versus 76.14 ± 27.56). The sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of the visual function scores were 91.1%, 81.7% and 0.939, respectively Visual function scores were used to construct a decision tree model. The sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of the model were 92.9%, 88.0% and 0.941, respectively, with an accuracy of 89.7% and a Brier score of 0.024. CONCLUSIONS: Visual function scores were qualified as a screening method for DON, with a cutoff point of 58. A multifactorial screening model based on visual function scores was constructed.

Precise targeting of specific regions within the central nervous system (CNS) is crucial for both scientific research and gene therapy in the context of brain diseases. Adeno-associated virus 13 (AAV13) is known for its restricted diffusion range within the CNS, making it an ideal choice for precise labeling and administration within small brain regions. However, AAV13 mediates relatively low expression of target genes. Here, we introduced specifically engineered modifications to the AAV13 capsid protein to enhance its transduction efficiency. We first constructed AAV13-YF by mutating tyrosine to phenylalanine on the surface of the AAV13 capsid. We then inserted the 7m8 peptide, known to enhance cell transduction, into positions 587/588 and 585/586 of the AAV13 capsid, resulting in two distinct variants named AAV13-587-7m8 and AAV13-585-7m8, respectively. We found that AAV13-YF exhibited superior in vitro infectivity in HEK293T cells compared to AAV13, while AAV13-587-7m8 and AAV13-585-7m8 showed enhanced CNS infection capabilities in C57BL/6 mice, with AAV13-587-7m8 infection retaining a limited spread range. These modified AAV13 variants hold promising potential for applications in gene therapy and neuroscience research.

The origin of breast cancer (BC) has traditionally been a focus of medical research. It is widely acknowledged that BC originates from immortal mammary stem cells and that these stem cells participate in two division modes: symmetric cell division (SCD) and asymmetrical cell division (ACD). Although both of these modes are key to the process of breast development and their imbalance is closely associated with the onset of BC, the molecular mechanisms underlying these phenomena deserve in-depth exploration. In this review, we first outline the molecular mechanisms governing ACD/SCD and analyze the role of ACD/SCD in various stages of breast development. We describe that the changes in telomerase activity, the role of polar proteins, and the stimulation of ovarian hormones subsequently lead to two distinct consequences: breast development or carcinogenesis. Finally, gene mutations, abnormalities in polar proteins, modulation of signal-transduction pathways, and alterations in the microenvironment disrupt the balance of BC stem cell division modes and cause BC. Important regulatory factors such as mammalian Inscuteable mInsc, Numb, Eya1, PKCα, PKCθ, p53, and IL-6 also play significant roles in regulating pathways of ACD/SCD and may constitute key targets for future research on stem cell division, breast development, and tumor therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical features and prognosis of patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma(PCNSL). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the relationship between clinical features, treatment regimen and prognosis in 46 newly diagnosed patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma who were diagnosed and treated in The Second Hospital of Lanzhou University from January 2015 to September 2022. Fisher's exact probability method was used to analyze the differences in clinical data of different subgroups. Kaplan-Meier survival curve was used to analyze the overall survival rate and progression-free survival rate of patients with different treatments, and the factors influencing survival were analyzed. RESULTS: Among 46 patients with PCNSL, which pathological type were diffuse large B-cell lymphoma(DLBCL). There were 26(56.5%) cases of male and 20(43.5%) of female, with a median age of 54(17-71) years. In Hans subtypes, 14 cases (30.4%) of GCB subtype, 32 cases (69.6%) of non-GCB subtype. 32 cases (69.6%) of Ki-67≥80%. Among 36 patients who completed at least 2 cycles of treatment with follow-up data, the efficacy evaluation was as follows: overall response rate(ORR) was 63.9%, complete response(CR) rate was 47.2%, 17 cases of CR, 6 cases of PR. The 1-year progression-free survival rate and 1-year overall survival rate was 73.6% and 84.9%, respectively. The 2-year progression-free survival rate and 2-year overall survival rate was 52.2% and 68.9%, respectively. The ORR and CR rate of 17 patients treated with RMT regimen was 76.5% and 52.9% (9 cases CR and 4 cases PR), respectively. Univariate analysis of 3 groups of patients treated with RMT regimen, RM-BTKi regimen, and RM-TT regimen as first-line treament showed that deep brain infiltration was associated with adverse PFS(P =0.032), and treatment regimen was associated with adverse OS in PCNSL patients(P =0.025). CONCLUSION: Different treatment modalities were independent prognosis predictors for OS, the deep brain infiltration of PCNSL is a poor predictive factor for PFS. Patients with relapse/refractory (R/R) PCNSL have a longer overall survival time because to the novel medication BTKi. They have strong toleration and therapeutic potential as a first-line therapy for high-risk patients.

Understanding the evolution of rural landscapes in metropolises during rapid urbanization is crucial for formulating policies to protect the rural ecological environment. In this study, remote sensing and geographical information system data, as well as applied landscape index analysis, are used to examine the spatiotemporal evolution of rural landscape patterns in the Beijing-Tianjin region of China, which has experienced rapid urbanization. The relationships between land use/land cover changes and changes in rural landscape patterns are explored. The results revealed significant spatial differences in the rural landscapes in the Beijing-Tianjin region; farmland and forestland were the main types of landscapes, creating a "mountain-field-sea" natural landscape pattern. The conversion of rural landscapes in the Beijing-Tianjin region involved mainly the conversion of farmland to urban areas, with few exchanges between other landscape types. The urban areas in the Beijing-Tianjin region increased by 3% per decade; farmland decreased at the same rate. Additionally, the rural landscape patterns in the Beijing-Tianjin region were dominated by fragmentation, dispersion, and heterogeneity and moved from complex to regular. Water bodies displayed the most fragmented natural landscape; their number of patches increased by 36%, though their network characteristics were maintained. Forestland was the most concentrated natural landscape. In this study, theoretical support and a scientific reference for the optimization of rural landscape patterns and the improvement in rural living environments in rapidly urbanizing areas are provided.

The high theoretical energy density and specific capacity of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have garnered considerable attention in the prospective market. However, ongoing research on Li-S batteries appears to have encountered a bottleneck, with unresolved key technical challenges such as the significant shuttle effect and sluggish reaction kinetics. This investigation explores the catalytic efficacy of three catalysts for Li-S batteries and elucidates the correlation between their structure and catalytic impacts. The results suggest that the combined utilization of lithium-insertion technology and a proton exchange approach for δ-MnO2 can optimize its electronic structure, resulting in an optimal catalyst (H/Li inserted δ-MnO2, denoted as HLM) for the sulfur reduction reaction. The replacement of Mn sites in δ-MnO2 with Li atoms can enhance the structural stability of the catalyst, while the introduction of H atoms between transition metal layers contributes to the satisfactory catalytic performance of HLM. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the bond length of Li2S4 adsorbed by the HLM molecule is elongated, thereby facilitating the dissociation process of Li2S4 and enhancing the reaction kinetics in Li-S batteries. Consequently, the Li-S battery utilizing HLM as a catalyst achieves a high areal specific capacity of 4.2 mAh cm-2 with a sulfur loading of 4.1 mg cm-2 and a low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio of 8 µL mg-1. This study introduces a methodology for designing effective catalysts that could significantly advance practical developments in Li-S battery technology.

A growing body of research has confirmed the involvement of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in the regulation of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) progression. However, the underlying molecular networks remain largely elusive. This study aimed to explore whether a novel circRNA, named circKIAA0564, affects nucleus pulposus (NP) cell injury and to elucidate its molecular mechanism. Both in vivo and in vitro IDD models were established, and the expression patterns of circKIAA0564/miR-424-5p/lysine demethylase 4a (KDM4A) were evaluated through quantitative reverse transcription PCR and Western blot analysis. Actinomycin D, RNase R, and Northern blotting were utilized to assess the circular structure of circKIAA0564. The Cell Counting Kit-8, flow cytometry, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, commercial assay kits, Western blotting, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) probes were employed to assess the inflammatory and oxidative stress status in NP cells and tissues. Hematoxylin and eosin and TUNEL staining were used to evaluate pathological damage in mouse NP tissues. RNA immunoprecipitation and dual-luciferase reporter assays were conducted to assess the direct targeting relationships among circKIAA0564, miR-424-5p, and KDM4A. CircKIAA0564 was found to be abnormally overexpressed in IDD, functioning as a novel circRNA. Knockdown of circKIAA0564 ameliorated interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß)-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in NP cells. The therapeutic effect of circKIAA0564 knockdown on NP cells was reversed by the silencing of miR-424-5p. Overexpression of circKIAA0564 exacerbated IL-1ß-induced NP cell injury, a process that was reversed by knockdown of KDM4A. CircKIAA0564 activated the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB)/NOD-, LRR-, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) signaling pathway by regulating the miR-424-5p/KDM4A axis. CircKIAA0564 exacerbates IL-1ß-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in NP cells by competitively binding miR-424-5p, thereby mediating KDM4A and activating the TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway. These findings provide robust data support for targeted therapy of IDD and the development of future pharmaceuticals.

OBJECTIVE: Although some studies have linked smoking to mortality after out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs), data regarding smoking and mortality after OHCAs have not yet been discussed in a meta-analysis. Thus, this study conducted this systematic review to clarify the association. METHODS: The study searched Medline-PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane libraries between January 1972 and July 2022 for studies that evaluated the association between smoking and mortality after OHCAs. Studies that reportedly showed relative risk estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were included. RESULTS: Incorporating a collective of five studies comprising 2477 participants, the analysis revealed a lower mortality risk among smokers in the aftermath of OHCAs compared with non-smokers (odds ratio: 0.77; 95% CI 0.61-0.96; P < 0.05). Egger's test showed no publication bias in the relationship between smoking and mortality after OHCAs. CONCLUSIONS: After experiencing OHCAs, smokers had lower mortality than non-smokers. However, due to the lack of data, this 'smoker's paradox' still needs other covariate effects and further studies to be considered valid.

Among the post-transcriptional modifications, m6A RNA methylation has gained significant research interest due to its critical role in regulating transcriptional expression. This modification affects RNA metabolism in several ways, including processing, nuclear export, translation, and decay, making it one of the most abundant transcriptional modifications and a crucial regulator of gene expression. The dysregulation of m6A RNA methylation-related proteins in many tumors has been shown to lead to the upregulation of oncoprotein expression, tumor initiation, proliferation, cancer cell progression, and metastasis.Although the impact of m6A RNA methylation on cancer cell growth and proliferation has been extensively studied, its role in DNA repair processes, which are crucial to the pathogenesis of various diseases, including cancer, remains unclear. However, recent studies have shown accumulating evidence that m6A RNA methylation significantly affects DNA repair processes and may play a role in cancer drug resistance. Therefore, a comprehensive literature review is necessary to explore the potential biological role of m6A-modified DNA repair processes in human cancer and cancer drug resistance.In conclusion, m6A RNA methylation is a crucial regulator of gene expression and a potential player in cancer development and drug resistance. Its dysregulation in many tumors leads to the upregulation of oncoprotein expression and tumor progression. Furthermore, the impact of m6A RNA methylation on DNA repair processes, although unclear, may play a crucial role in cancer drug resistance. Therefore, further studies are warranted to better understand the potential biological role of m6A-modified DNA repair processes in human cancer and cancer drug resistance.

Sweet sorghum has a large biomass and strong cadmium (Cd) absorption capacity, which has the potential for phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil. In order to study the Cd phytoremediation effect of sweet sorghum assisted with citric acid on the typical parent materials in southern China, a field experiment was carried out in two typical parent material farmland areas (neutral purple mud field and jute sand mud field) with Cd pollution in Hunan Province. The results showed that:① Citric acid had no inhibitory effect on the growth of sweet sorghum. After the application of citric acid, the aboveground biomass of sweet sorghum at the maturity stage increased by 10.1%-24.7%. ② Both sweet sorghum planting and citric acid application reduced the soil pH value, and the application of citric acid further reduced the soil pH value at each growth stage of sweet sorghum; this decrease was greater in the neutral purple mud field, which decreased by 0.24-0.72 units. ③ Both sweet sorghum planting and citric acid application reduced the total amount of soil Cd, and the decreases in the neutral purple mud field and jute sand mud field were 23.8%-52.2% and 17.1%-31.8%, respectively. The acid-extractable percentage of soil Cd in both places increased by 38.6%-147.7% and 4.8%-22.7%, respectively. ④ The application of citric acid could significantly increase the Cd content in various tissues of sweet sorghum. The Cd content in the aboveground part of the plant in the neutral purple mud field was higher than that in the jute sand mud field, and the Cd content in stems and leaves was 0.25-1.90 mg·kg-1 and 0.21-0.64 mg·kg-1, respectively. ⑤ After applying citric acid, the Cd extraction amount of sweet sorghum in neutral purple mud soil in the mature stage reached 47.56 g·hm-2. In summary, citric acid could enhance the efficiency of sweet sorghum in the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil, and the effect was better in neutral purple mud fields. This technology has the potential for remediation coupled with agro-production for heavy metal-contaminated farmland.

The Fagaceae, a plant family with a wide distribution and diverse adaptability, has garnered significant interest as a subject of study in plant speciation and adaptation. Meanwhile, certain Fagaceae species are regarded as highly valuable wood resources due to the exceptional quality of their wood. In this study, we present two high-quality, chromosome-scale genome sequences for Quercus sichourensis (848.75 Mb) and Quercus rex (883.46 Mb). Comparative genomics analysis reveals that the difference in the number of plant disease resistance genes and the nonsynonymous and synonymous substitution ratio (Ka/Ks) of protein-coding genes among Fagaceae species are related to different environmental adaptations. Interestingly, most genes related to starch synthesis in the investigated Quercoideae species are located on a single chromosome, as compared to the outgroup species, Fagus sylvatica. Furthermore, resequencing and population analysis of Q. sichourensis and Q. rex reveal that Q. sichourensis has lower genetic diversity and higher deleterious mutations compared to Q. rex. The high-quality, chromosome-level genomes and the population genomic analysis of the critically endangered Q. sichourensis and Q. rex will provide an invaluable resource as well as insights for future study in these two species, even the genus Quercus, to facilitate their conservation.
