RESUMO

The evaluation of toxicity related to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) is crucial for a comprehensive risk assessment in real-world exposure scenarios. This study employed a controlled feeding experiment to investigate the metabolic effects of dioxin-like compounds (DLCs) on laying hens via feed exposure. Diets enriched with two concentrations (1.17 and 5.13 pg toxic equivalents (TEQ)/g dry weight (dw)) were administered over 14 days, followed by 28 days of clean feed. Metabolomics analyses of blood samples revealed significant metabolic variations between PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs exposed groups and controls, reflecting the induced metabolic disruption. Distinct changes were observed in sphingosine, palmitoleic acid, linoleate, linolenic acid, taurocholic acid, indole acrylic acid, and dibutyl phthalate levels, implying possible connections between PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs toxic effects and energy-neuronal imbalances, along with lipid accumulation and anomalous amino acid metabolism, impacting taurine metabolism. Moreover, we identified three differential endogenous metabolites-L-tryptophan, indole-3-acetaldehyde, and indole acrylic acid-as potential ligands for the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), suggesting their role in mediating PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs toxicity. This comprehensive investigation provides novel insights into the metabolic alterations induced by PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs in laying hens, thereby enhancing our ability to assess risks associated with their exposure in human populations.

Microplastics (MPs) are of increasing concern due to their role as reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pathogens. To date, few studies have explored the influence of anthropogenic activities on ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) within various riverine MPs, in comparison to their natural counterparts. Here an in-situ incubation was conducted along heavily anthropogenically-impacted Houxi River to characterize the geographical pattern of antibiotic resistome, mobilome and pathogens inhabiting MPs- and leaf-biofilms. The metagenomics result showed a clear urbanization-driven profile in the distribution of ARGs, MGEs and pathogens, with their abundances sharply increasing 4.77 to 19.90 times from sparsely to densely populated regions. The significant correlation between human fecal marker crAssphage and ARG (R2 = 0.67, P=0.003) indicated the influence of anthropogenic activity on ARG proliferation in plastisphere and natural leaf surfaces. And mantel tests and random forest analysis revealed the impact of 17 socio-environmental factors, e.g., population density, antibiotic concentrations, and pore volume of materials, on the dissemination of ARGs. Partial least squares-path modeling further unveiled that intensifying human activities not only directly boosted ARGs abundance but also exerted a comparable indirect impact on ARGs propagation. Furthermore, the polyvinylchloride plastisphere created a pathogen-friendly habitat, harboring higher abundances of ARGs and MGEs, while polylactic acid are not likely to serve as vectors for pathogens in river, with a lower resistome risk score than that in leaf-biofilms. This study highlights the diverse ecological risks associated with the dissemination of ARGs and pathogens in varied MPs, offering insights for the policymaking of usage and control of plastics within urbanization.

Aim: To analyze the clinical phenotype and genetic etiology of three cases of glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA1) in Chinese children. Methods: We performed genetic and metabolic testing using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), followed by trio whole-exome sequencing (trio-WES) and Sanger sequencing. A literature review on glutaric aciduria type 1 (GA1) in Chinese patients was also conducted. Results: Sequencing results showed each case had compound heterozygous variants in GCDH(NM_000159.4): c.214C > G (p.Arg72Gly) and c.411C > G (p.Tyr137Term) (Case 1), c.214C > G (p.Arg72Gly) and c.1204C > T (p.Arg402Trp) (Case 2), and c.1228G > T (p.Val410Leu) and c.395G > A (p.Arg132Gln) (Case 3). These variants were inherited from their respective parents. Notably, the c.214C > G variant found in two children was a novel variant not previously reported. A review of the literature revealed that, clinically, the majority of patients experienced onset in infancy and early childhood (82%). Additionally, 38.36% were diagnosed through newborn screening, with the primary reasons for the initial visit being delayed development (32.43%) and infections (21.61%). The most common clinical manifestations included increased head circumference (77.19%) and motor developmental delay (65.15%). Biochemically, patients exhibited significant elevations in C5DC (98.51%) and C5DC/C8 (94.87%) in blood, as well as GA (94.37%) and 3OHGA (69.39%) in urine. Radiographically, patients showed a high prevalence of abnormalities in cranial MRI (86.15%) and EEG (73.33%). Genetically, 67 distinct GCDH gene variants were identified among 73 patients, with missense variants being the most prevalent type (73.97%). The most frequent variant was c.1244-2 A > C, observed in 17.12% of cases. Additionally, the majority of variant sites were located in exons 11 (25.37%) and 6 (22.39%). Conclusion: GCDH variants were identified as the causative factors in the three children. The discovery of the novel variant (c.214C > G) expands the spectrum of pathogenic GCDH variants. These findings facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of affected children and provide a basis for genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis for their families.

Printer source prediction is an important task when examining questioned documents. While some research has provided methods to predict the source printer of documents, with the advent of compatible consumables, printer prediction could become more complex and difficult. Predicting the source printer after replacing cartridges and identifying the source of printer cartridges are unresolved issues that are rarely addressed in current research. Herein, we introduce a novel technique to predict the manufacturer, model, and cartridges of laser printers (i.e., compatible, and original cartridges) used to produce a given document. Document samples produced using eight laser printers and 247 cartridges were collected to establish a dataset. Common manufacturers included HP, Canon, Lenovo, and Epson. After obtaining white-light images and three-dimensional profile images of printed characters, a morphological analysis was conducted by questioned document examiners (QDEs) using microscopy. Microscopic image features across a series of images were also extracted and analyzed using algorithms. Then, six high-dimensional reduction algorithms were used to obtain between- and within-printer variations as well as between- and within-cartridge variations. Finally, we conducted principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant analysis. For 40 % of the samples, mixed discrimination analysis (MDA) and fixed discrimination analysis (FDA) were employed to predict the manufacturer, model and cartridge of laser printers used to produce the questioned printed document; the remaining 60 % samples comprised the training dataset. In the prediction of manufacturer, model and cartridge, our method achieved mean accuracies of 95.5 %, 97.5 %, and 90.2 %, respectively. Hence, this technique could reasonably aid in predicting the manufacturer, model, and cartridge of a laser printer, even if different cartridges are loaded into printers.

The quality of Japanese forensic experts has been widely recognized around the world, which cannot be separated from the "ripple effect" caused by the rapid rise of the modern forensic education in Japan. By continuously adopting foreign forensic education resources and teaching experience, it has finally formed a forensic professional talent training model with a clear hierarchy of basic education and professional training, as well as classroom teaching and case studies complementing each other; and it continuously improves the comprehensive quality of practitioners through domestic training and international exchange and cooperation, providing talented professionals for the development of the Japanese forensic industry. In this context, this article takes the development history of Japanese forensic medicine as the starting point to study how it gradually formed the embryonic form of forensic education in modern times. Based on this, it analyzes the characteristics of Japan's modern forensic medicine talent training model, summarizes excellent experiences for localized transformation, such as emphasizing the role of practical teaching, exerting the effectiveness of vocational skills training, and promoting international exchange and cooperation, to provide reference and inspiration for the training of relevant professional talents in China.

Despite growing concerns regarding the long-range transport (LRT) and ecological risks of organophosphate esters (OPEs), information on the environmental behaviors of OPEs in polar terrestrial ecosystems remains inadequate. In the present study, 10 OPEs were analyzed in soil and vegetation samples collected from Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica. The OPE concentrations in Antarctic soils, mosses, and lichens ranged from 0.87 to 15.7 ng/g dry weight (dw), 9.8 to 113 ng/g dw, and 3.6 to 75.2 ng/g dw, respectively. Non-chlorinated OPEs predominated in terrestrial matrices, accounting for approximately 76 % of the OPE composition. Source identification indicated that OPE contamination in Antarctica likely resulted from local anthropogenic sources and LRT. Moreover, the bioaccumulation behavior of OPEs from soil to vegetation was assessed using bioconcentration factors (BCFs), revealing a significant non-linear trend of initial increase and subsequent decrease in BCFs relative to the lipophilicities of the octanol-air partition coefficient (log KOA) and octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW). While low levels of OPEs in Antarctic terrestrial environments were reported in this study, their sustained inputs and potential ecological risks in polar regions warrant further attention.

High-voltage phase transition constitutes the major barrier to accessing high energy density in layered cathodes. However, questions remain regarding the origin of phase transition, because the interlayer weak bonding features cannot get an accurate description by experiments. Here, we determined van der Waals (vdW) interaction (vdWi) in LixCoO2 via visualizing its electron density, elucidating the origin of O3─O1 phase transition. The charge around oxygen is distorted by the increasing Co─O covalency. The charge distortion causes the difference of vdW gap between O3 and O1 phases, verified by a gap corrected vdW equation. In a high charging state, excessive covalency breaks the vdW gap balance, driving the O3 phase toward a stable O1 one. This interpretation of vdWi-dominated phase transition can be applied to other layered materials, as shown by a map regarding degree of covalence. Last, we introduce the cationic potential to provide a solution for designing high-voltage layered cathodes.

This study delves into the unexplored distribution and accumulation of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), pervasive industrial contaminants used as flame retardants and plasticizers, within the hadal trenches, some of Earth's most isolated marine ecosystems. Analysis of sediments from the Mussau (MS) and Mariana trench (MT) reveals notably high total CP concentrations (∑SCCPs + ∑MCCPs) of 10,963 and 14,554 ng g-1 dw, respectively, surpassing those in a reference site in the western Pacific abyssal plain (8533 ng g-1 dw). In contrast, the New Britain Trench (NBT) exhibits the lowest concentrations (2213-5880 ng g-1 dw), where CP distribution correlates with clay content, δ13C and δ15N values, but little with total organic carbon and depth. Additionally, amphipods from these trenches display varying CP levels, with MS amphipods reaching concerning concentrations (8681-16,138 ng g-1 lw), while amphipods in the MT-1 site show the lowest (4414-5010 ng g-1 lw). These bioaccumulation trends appear to be primarily influenced by feeding behaviors (δ13C) and trophic levels (δ15N). Utilizing biota-sediment accumulation factor values and principal component analysis, we discern that CPs in sediment may come from surface-derived particulate organic matters, while those in amphipods may come from the above carrion. Our findings elucidate the profound impacts of the emerging pollutants on the Earth's least explored marine ecosystems.

The development of highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is crucial for achieving high-performance practical anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) at ampere-level current density. Herein, we report a design concept by employing Ga single atoms as an electronic bridge to stabilize the Ru clusters for boosting alkaline HER performance in practical AEMWE. Experimental and theoretical results collectively reveal that the bridged Ga sites trigger strong metal-support interaction for the homogeneous distribution of Ru clusters with high density, as well as optimize the Ru-H bond strength due to the electron transfer between Ru and Ga for enhanced intrinsic HER activity. Moreover, the oxophilic Ga sites near the Ru clusters tend to adsorb the hydroxyl species and accelerate the water dissociation for sufficient proton supplement in an alkaline medium. The Ru-GaSA/N-C catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 4 ± 1 mV (10 mA cm-2) and high mass activity of 9.3 ± 0.5 A mg-1Ru at -0.05 V vs RHE. In particular, the Ru-GaSA/N-C-based AEMWE in 1 M KOH delivers a voltage of only 1.74 V to reach an industrial current density of 1 A cm-2, and can steadily operate at 1 A cm-2 for more than 170 h.

The electrocatalytic reduction of COx (including CO2 and CO) into value-added fuels and chemicals, particularly multi-carbon (C2+) alcohols, presents a significant opportunity to close the manmade carbon cycle and support sustainable energy systems. The catalytic performance of electrochemical reduction reactions of CO2 and CO (COxRR) is strongly correlated with the local microenvironments, the flow electrolyzer, and the catalysis approaches with flow electrolyzers, which contribute to the kinetic and thermodynamic landscape of the reaction, ultimately determining the efficiency and selectivity of the COxRR toward desired reduction products. However, controllable microenvironment construction, rationally designed flow electrolyzers, and matchable flow electrolyzers derived catalysis approaches chosen for improving COxRR-to-alcohol performance still face challenges. Building upon the foundation laid by previous research, this review article will provide an in-depth summary of the regulation of the catalytic reaction interface microenvironment, the design of flow electrolyzers, and the development of derived stepwise catalysis approaches with the flow electrolyzers, which provide a comprehensive and strategic approach to enhancing the COxRR process for alcohol production, offering valuable insights and innovative solutions that can significantly impact the field of COxRR conversion to alcohol and contribute to the development of more sustainable chemical production methods.

Phytophthora capsici, a pathogenic oomycete, poses a serious threat to global vegetable production. This study investigated the role of protein arginine methylation, a notable post-translational modification, in the epigenetic regulation of P. capsici. We identified and characterized five protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) in P. capsici, with a focus on four putative type I PRMTs exhibiting similar functional domain. Deletion of PcPRMT3, a homolog of PRMT3, significantly affected mycelial growth, asexual spore development, pathogenicity, and stress responses in P. capsici. Transcriptome analyses indicated that absence of PcPRMT3 disrupted multiple biological pathways. The PcPRMT3 deletion mutant displayed heightened susceptibility to oxidative stress, correlated with the downregulation of genes involved in peroxidase and peroxisome activities. Additionally, PcPRMT3 acted as a negative regulator, modulating the transcription levels of specific elicitins, which in turn affects the defense response of host plant against P. capsici. Furthermore, PcPRMT3 was found to affect global arginine methylation levels in P. capsici, implying potential alterations in the functions of its substrate proteins.

The Jahn-Teller effect (JTE) arising from lattice-electron coupling is a fascinating phenomenon that profoundly affects important physical properties in a number of transition-metal compounds. Controlling JT distortions and their corresponding electronic structures is highly desirable to tailor the functionalities of materials. Here, we propose a local coordinate strategy to regulate the JTE through quantifying occupancy in the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] orbitals of Mn and scrutinizing the symmetries of the ligand oxygen atoms in MnO6 octahedra in LiMn2O4 and Li0.5Mn2O4. The effectiveness of such a strategy has been demonstrated by constructing P2-type NaLi x Mn1 - x O2 oxides with different Li/Mn ordering schemes. In addition, this strategy is also tenable for most 3d transition-metal compounds in spinel and perovskite frameworks, indicating the universality of local coordinate strategy and the tunability of the lattice-orbital coupling in transition-metal oxides. This work demonstrates a useful strategy to regulate JT distortion and provides useful guidelines for future design of functional materials with specific physical properties.

Background: Little is known about the associations of hearing loss, hippocampal volume, and motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) in older adults. Objective: We aimed to investigate the associations of hearing loss with MCR and hippocampal volume; and the interaction of hearing loss with hippocampal volume on MCR. Methods: This population-based cross-sectional study included 2,540 dementia-free participants (age≥60 years; 56.5% women) in the baseline examination of the Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in rural China. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, clinical examination, and laboratory tests. Hearing function was assessed using pure tone audiometry test. In the subsample (n = 661), hippocampal volume was assessed on structural magnetic resonance images. Data were analyzed with logistic regression models. Results: In the total sample, MCR was diagnosed in 246 persons (9.7%). High-frequency hearing loss was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of MCR and slow gait. In the subsample, the restricted cubic spline plots indicated an inverted U-shaped nonlinear relationship between high-frequency hearing performance and hippocampal volume. Moreover, greater hippocampal volume was significantly associated with a deduced likelihood of MCR and subjective cognitive decline (SCD). In addition, there were statistical interactions of high-frequency hearing loss with hippocampal volume on MCR and slow gait (p for interaction < 0.05), such that the associations were statistically significant only among participants free of high-frequency hearing loss. Conclusions: High-frequency hearing loss was associated with an increased likelihood of MCR in older adults. The hippocampus might play a part in the relationship of high-frequency hearing loss and MCR.

Plant essential oils have a wide range of applications including cosmetics, food, leather, and textiles. Traditional methods employed for essential oils extraction suffer from several drawbacks, which have escalated into a major bottleneck for industrial applications. To circumvent the limitations, various innovative and eco-friendly technologies have emerged for the extraction of essential oils, such as ultrasound-assisted extraction, pulsed electrical-assisted extraction, ohmic-assisted technology, supercritical fluid extraction, and solvent-free microwave extraction. These cutting-edge technologies provide notable advantages over traditional methods in terms of extraction efficiency, environmental safety, and product quality enhancement. This review highlights the advantage of these innovative techniques, with a particular focus on their ability to enhance the yield and antioxidant activity of essential oils while simultaneously reducing energy consumption. Additionally, the mechanisms of these new and eco-friendly extraction methods are thoroughly discussed. This review provides valuable insights into the advancements in essential oils extraction.

The free-field switching of the perpendicular magnetization by the out-of-plane polarized spin current induced spin-orbit torque makes it a promising technology for developing high-density memory and logic devices. The materials intrinsically with low symmetry are generally utilized to generate the spin current with out-of-plane spin polarization. However, the generation of the out-of-plane polarized spin current by engineering the symmetry of materials has not yet been reported. Here, we demonstrate that paramagnetic CaRuO3 films are able to generate out-of-plane polarized spin current by engineering the crystal symmetry. The non-uniform oxygen octahedral tilt/rotation along film's normal direction induced by oxygen octahedral coupling near interface breaks the screw-axis and glide-plane symmetries, which gives rise to a significant out-of-plane polarized spin current. This spin current can drive field-free spin-orbit torque switching of perpendicular magnetization with high efficiency. Our results offer a promising strategy based on crystal symmetry design to manipulate spin current and could have potential applications in advanced spintronic devices.

The incorporation of multiple immiscible metals in high-entropy oxides can create the unconventional coordination environment of catalytic active sites, while the high formation temperature of high-entropy oxides results in bulk materials with low specific surface areas. Here we develop the high-entropy LaMnO3-type perovskite-polyoxometalate subnanowire heterostructures with periodically aligned high-entropy LaMnO3 oxides and polyoxometalate under a significantly reduced temperature of 100 oC, which is much lower than the temperature required by state-of-the-art calcination methods for synthesizing high-entropy oxides. The high-entropy LaMnO3-polyoxometalate subnanowires exhibit excellent catalytic activity for the photoelectrochemical coupling of methane into acetic acid under mild conditions (1 bar, 25 oC), with a high productivity (up to 4.45 mmol g‒1cat h‒1) and selectivity ( > 99%). Due to the electron delocalization at the subnanometer scale, the contiguous active sites of high-entropy LaMnO3 and polyoxometalate in the heterostructure can efficiently activate C - H bonds and stabilize the resulted *COOH intermediates, which benefits the in situ coupling of *CH3 and *COOH into acetic acid.

Air sensitivity remains a substantial barrier to the commercialization of sodium (Na)-layered oxides (NLOs). This problem has puzzled the community for decades because of the complexity of interactions between air components and their impact on both bulk and surfaces of NLOs. We show here that water vapor plays a pivotal role in initiating destructive acid and oxidative degradations of NLOs only when coupled with carbon dioxide or oxygen, respectively. Quantification analysis revealed that reducing the defined cation competition coefficient (η), which integrates the effects of ionic potential and sodium content, and increasing the particle size can enhance the resistance to acid attack, whereas using high-potential redox couples can eliminate oxidative degradation. These findings elucidate the underlying air deterioration mechanisms and rationalize the design of air-stable NLOs.

Manipulating optical chirality via electric fields has garnered considerable attention in the realm of both fundamental physics and practical applications. Chiral ferroelectrics, characterized by their inherent optical chirality and switchable spontaneous polarization, are emerging as a promising platform for electronic-photonic integrated circuits applications. Unlike organics with chiral carbon centers, integrating chirality into technologically mature inorganic ferroelectrics has posed a long-standing challenge. Here, the successful introduction of chirality is reported into self-assembly La-doped BiFeO3 nanoislands, which exhibit ferroelectric vortex domains. By employing synergistic experimental techniques with piezoresponse force microscopy and nonlinear optical second-harmonic generation probes, a clear correlation between chirality and polarization configuration within these ferroelectric nanoislands is established. Furthermore, the deterministic control of ferroelectric vortex domains and chirality is demonstrated by applying electric fields, enabling reversible and nonvolatile generation and elimination of optically chiral signals. RESUMO

This paper examines the influence of housing wealth on fertility outcomes through a regression discontinuity design based on a 2006 Chinese housing-market policy. Our analysis reveals that the positive impact of this policy on housing wealth significantly enhances the likelihood of fertility by 7.3 %. Our result implies that a 1 % increase in housing wealth can raise the fertility rate by 0.18 %. Furthermore, we observe that children born subsequent to the positive housing wealth shock exhibit improved health, not only at birth but also over the long term. Lastly, we present suggestive evidence suggesting that both parental pre-birth time allocation and parental health may help explain the documented positive effects of housing wealth on fertility rates.

RESUMO

The magnetic correlations at the superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) interfaces play a crucial role in realizing dissipation-less spin-based logic and memory technologies, such as triplet-supercurrent spin-valves and 'π' Josephson junctions. Here we report the observation of an induced large magnetic moment at high-quality nitride S/F interfaces. Using polarized neutron reflectometry and DC SQUID measurements, we quantitatively determined the magnetization profile of the S/F bilayer and confirmed that the induced magnetic moment in the adjacent superconductor only exists below T C. Interestingly, the direction of the induced moment in the superconductors was unexpectedly parallel to that in the ferromagnet, which contrasts with earlier findings in S/F heterostructures based on metals or oxides. First-principles calculations verified that the unusual interfacial spin texture observed in our study was caused by the Heisenberg direct exchange coupling with constant J∼4.28 meV through d-orbital overlapping and severe charge transfer across the interfaces. Our work establishes an incisive experimental probe for understanding the magnetic proximity behavior at S/F interfaces and provides a prototype epitaxial 'building block' for superconducting spintronics.
