RESUMO

Efficiently mixing highly viscous liquids in microfluidic systems is appealing for green chemistry such as chemical synthesis and catalysis, but it is a long-standing challenge owing to the unfavorable diffusion kinetics. In this work, a new strategy is explored for mixing viscous droplets by harnessing a peculiar Leidenfrost state, where the substrate temperature is above the boiling point of the liquid without apparent liquid evaporation. Compared to the control experiment where the droplet stays at a similar temperature but in the contact boiling regime, the mixing time can be reduced significantly. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the liquid mixing originates from the chaotic convection flow in the Leidenfrost droplet, characterized by the internal vortex motion evidenced by the microscale visualization. A correlation between mixing time and droplet volume is also proposed, showing a good agreement with experimental results. It is further shown that Leidenfrost droplets can be used to synthesize nanoparticles of the desired morphology, and it is anticipated that this simple and scalable fabrication approach will find applications in the biological, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries.

RESUMO

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a high-potential technology for purifying natural surface water; however, the problem of membrane fouling has limited its widespread application. Herein, ultraviolet (UV)-activated ferrate (Fe(vi)) was used to purify natural surface water and improve the performance of the UF membrane. The combination of UV and Fe(vi) could generate active species (Fe(v), Fe(iv), ˙OH and O2˙-) to degrade pollutants, while the in situ produced Fe(iii) had the effect of coagulation. With the above action, pollutants were removed, and the pollution load of natural surface water was reduced. After treatment with the UV/Fe(vi) system, dissolved organic carbon was reduced by 49.38%, while UV254 was reduced by 45.00%. The removal rate was further increased to 54.88% and 51.67% after UF treatment. In addition, the fluorescent organics were reduced by 44.22%, and the molecular weight of the organics became smaller. In the stage of UF, the terminal J/J0 was increased from 0.61 to 0.92, and the membrane fouling resistance was decreased by 85.94%. The analysis of the membrane fouling mechanism indicates that the role of cake filtration was weakened among all the mechanisms. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that less pollutants were accumulated on the membrane surface, and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the membrane pore blockage was relieved. In summary, the UV/Fe(vi) co-treatment process proposed in this study can significantly improve the purification efficiency of the UF systems in natural surface water treatment.

RESUMO

In this study, persulphate and nanoscale zero-valent iron were activated by ultraviolet irradiation (PS/nZVI/UV), followed by formation of dynamic flocs with AlCl3-TiCl4 coagulant directly injected into a gravity-driven membrane (GDM) tank. Membrane fouling caused by typical organic matter fractions including humic acid (HA), HA together with bovine serum albumin (HA-BSA), HA combined with polysaccharide (HA-SA) and the HA-BSA-SA mixture at pH of 6.0, 7.5 and 9.0 were evaluated by specific flux and fouling resistance distribution. The results showed that GDM pre-layered with AlCl3-TiCl4 flocs exhibited the maximum specific flux, followed by AlCl3 and TiCl4. Pre-oxidation with 0.5 mM PS and 0.1 g nZVI under UV radiation for 20 min was beneficial to degrade HA and SA fraction with molecular weight >100 kDa and <30 kDa, and BSA fraction with <30 kDa. The presence of BSA attributed mostly to irreversible fouling, SA together with BAS could exacerbate irreversible fouling, while HA caused the least fouling. The irreversible resistance of a PS/nZVI/UV-GDM system was 62.79%, 27.27%, 58.03% and 49.68% lower than that of control GDM in the treatment of HA, HA-BSA, HA-SA and HA-BSA-SA, respectively. The PS/nZVI/UV-GDM system could achieve the highest foulants removal efficiency at pH of 6.0. Morphological observations confirmed the differences in biofouling layers in different water types. Over 30-day operation, the bacterial genera on the biofouling layer could affect the organic removals, while the type of organic matter that was present influenced the relative abundance of bacterial genera.

RESUMO

The self-transportation of mobile Leidenfrost droplets with well-defined direction and velocity on millimetric ratchets is one of the most representative and spectacular phenomena in droplet dynamics. Despite extensive progress in the ability to control the spatiotemporal propagation of droplets, it remains elusive how the individual ratchet units, as well as the interactions within their arrays, are translated into the collective droplet dynamics. Here, simple planar ratchets characterized by uniform height normal to the surface are designed. It is revealed that on planar ratchets, the transport dynamics of Leidenfrost droplets is dependent not only on individual units, but also on the elegant coordination within their arrays dictated by their topography. The design of planar ratchets enriches the fundamental understanding of how the surface topography is translated into dynamic and collective droplet transport behaviors, and also imparts higher applicability in microelectromechanical system based fluidic devices.
