Background: Education for the lay public in basic life support (BLS) is critical for increasing bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) rates and improving survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Despite years of implementation, the BLS training rate in China has remained modest. The aim of this study was to investigate the factors influencing the implementation of BLS training programs in emergency medical service (EMS) centers in China and to identify specific barriers and enablers. Methods: Qualitative interviews were conducted with key informants from 40 EMS centers in Chinese cities. The participants included 11 directors/deputy directors, 24 training department leaders, and 5 senior trainers. The interview guide was based on the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, Sustainment (EPIS) framework. Thematic content analysis was used to identify themes and patterns across the interviews. Results: We identified 16 factors influencing the implementation of BLS training programs encompassing the outer content, inner context, innovation and bridging factors. Some factors acted as either barriers or enablers at different EPIS stages. The main implementation barriers included limited external leadership, insufficient government investment, low public awareness, a shortage of trainers, an absence of incentives, an absence of authoritative courses and guidelines, a lack of qualification to issue certificates, limited academic involvement, and insufficient publicity. The main enablers were found to be supportive government leaders, strong public demand, adequate resources, program champions, available high-quality courses of high fitness within the local context, the involvement of diverse institutions, and effective publicity and promotion. Conclusion: Our findings emphasize the diversity of stakeholders, the complexity of implementation, and the need for localization and co-construction when conducting BLS training for lay public in city EMS centers. Improvements can be made at the national level, city level, and EMS institutional level to boost priority and awareness, promote legislation and policies, raise sustainable resources, and enhance the technology of BLS courses.

It has been validated that enhancing crystallinity and passivating the deep-level defect are critical for improving the device performance of kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) solar cells. Coordination chemistry interactions within the Cu-Zn-Sn-S precursor solution play a crucial role in the management of structural defects and the crystallization kinetics of CZTSSe thin films. Therefore, regulating the coordination environment of anion and cation in the precursor solution to control the formation process of precursor films is a major challenge at present. Herein, a synergetic crystallization modulation and defect passivation method is developed using P2S5 as an additive in the CZTS precursor solution to optimize the coordination structure and improve the crystallization process. The alignment of theoretical assessments with experimental observations confirms the ability of the P2S5 molecule to coordinate with the metal cation sites of CZTS precursor films, especially more liable to the Zn2+, effectively passivating the Zn-related defects, thereby significantly reducing the defect density in CZTSSe absorbers. As a result, the device with a power conversion efficiency of 14.36% has been achieved. This work provides an unprecedented strategy for fabricating high-quality thin films by anion-coordinate regulation and a novel route for realizing efficient CZTSSe solar cells.

Photodetection has attracted significant attention for information transmission. While the implementation relies primarily on the photonic detectors, they are predominantly constrained by the intrinsic bandgap of active materials. On the other hand, photothermoelectric (PTE) detectors have garnered substantial research interest for their promising capabilities in broadband detection, owing to the self-driven photovoltages induced by the temperature differences. To get higher performances, it is crucial to localize light and heat energies for efficient conversion. However, there is limited research on the energy conversion in PTE detectors at micro/nano scale. In this study, we have achieved a two-order-of-magnitude enhancement in photovoltage responsivity in the self-rolled tubular tellurium (Te) photodetector with PTE effect. Under illumination, the tubular device demonstrates a maximum photovoltage responsivity of 252.13 V W-1 and a large detectivity of 1.48 × 1011 Jones. We disclose the mechanism of the PTE conversion in the tubular structure with the assistance of theoretical simulation. In addition, the device exhibits excellent performances in wide-angle and polarization-dependent detection. This work presents an approach to remarkably improve the performance of photodetector by concentrating light and corresponding heat generated, and the proposed self-rolled devices thus hold remarkable promises for next-generation on-chip photodetection.

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a pervasive global health issue, and currently, there is a scarcity of targeted drug therapies available. This study aims to identify potential druggable target genes for AR using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods: MR analysis was conducted to assess the causal effect of expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) in the blood on AR. Data on AR were collected from 2 datasets: FinnGen(R9) (11,009 cases and 359,149 controls) and UK Biobank (25,486 cases and 87,097 controls). Colocalization analysis was utilized to assess the common causal genetic variations between the identified drug target genes and AR. We also employed available genome-wide association studies (GWAS) data to gauge the impact of druggable genes on AR biomarkers and other allergic diseases. Results: This study employs MR to analyze the relationship between 3410 druggable genes and AR. After Bonferroni correction, 10 genes were found to be significantly associated with AR risk (P < 0.05/3410). Colocalization analysis revealed a significant causal relationship between the expression variation of CFL1 and EFEMP2 genes and AR, sharing direct causal variants (colocalization probability PP.H3 + PP.H4 > 0.8), highlighting their importance as potential therapeutic targets for AR. The CFL1 gene showed a causal link with levels of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), eosinophil count, and interleukin-13 (IL-13) (P = 0.016, 7.45E-16, 0.00091, respectively). EFEMP2 was also causally related to eosinophil count, IL-13, and interleukin-17 (IL-17) (P = 0.00012, 0.00091, 0.032, respectively). PheWAS analysis revealed significant associations of CFL1 with asthma, whereas EFEMP2 showed associations with both asthma and eczema. Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) network analysis further unveiled the direct interactions of EFEMP2 and CFL1 with proteins related to immune regulation and inflammatory responses, with 77.64% of the network consisting of direct bindings, indicating their key roles in modulating AR-related immune and inflammatory responses. Notably, there was an 8.01% significant correlation between immune-related pathways and genes involved in inflammatory responses. Conclusion: These genes present notable associations with AR biomarkers and other autoimmune diseases, offering valuable targets for developing new AR therapies.

BACKGROUND: Limited studies have investigated the correlation between fat distribution and the risk of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in the general population with diabetes. The relationship between obesity and DR remains inconclusive, possibly due to using simple anthropometric measures to define obesity. This study investigates the relationships between the android-to-gynoid fat ratio (A/G ratio, measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) and DR within the US population with diabetes. METHODS: The study used a population-based, cross-sectional approach based on the 2003-2006 and 2011-2018 data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed on participants with diabetes to evaluate the contribution of body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and A/G ratio to the prevalence of DR. RESULTS: The prevalence of DR was 22.2, 21.2, and 17.6% among participants with A/G ratios <1.0, 1.0-1.2, and ≥1.2, respectively. After adjusting sex, age, ethnicity, diabetes duration, hemoglobin A1c level, blood pressure level, and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, a higher A/G ratio (≥1.2) was independently associated with decreased odds of DR (odds ratio [OR], 0.565; 95% CI: 0.372-0.858) compared with the A/G ratio of 1.0-1.2. Associations between a higher A/G ratio and DR remained statistically significant after adjusting for BMI (OR, 0.567; 95% CI: 0.373-0.861) and WHtR (OR, 0.586; 95% CI: 0.379-0.907). Moreover, these associations remained statistically significant in analyses using the ethnic-specific tertiles for the A/G ratio. In sex-stratified models, these correlations remained in males. There was a significant inverse association between the A/G ratio and diabetes duration in males, which persisted after multivariable adjustments (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A novel finding indicates that a higher A/G ratio is associated with a reduced likelihood of DR in males with diabetes. The results from NHANES underscore the importance of considering imaging-based fat distribution as a critical indicator in clinical practice.

We generated a replication-competent OC43 human seasonal coronavirus (CoV) expressing the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike in place of the native spike (rOC43-CoV2 S). This virus is highly attenuated relative to OC43 and SARS-CoV-2 in cultured cells and animals and is classified as a biosafety level 2 (BSL-2) agent by the NIH biosafety committee. Neutralization of rOC43-CoV2 S and SARS-CoV-2 by S-specific monoclonal antibodies and human sera is highly correlated, unlike recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus-CoV2 S. Single-dose immunization with rOC43-CoV2 S generates high levels of neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and fully protects human ACE2 transgenic mice from SARS-CoV-2 lethal challenge, despite nondetectable replication in respiratory and nonrespiratory organs. rOC43-CoV2 S induces S-specific serum and airway mucosal immunoglobulin A and IgG responses in rhesus macaques. rOC43-CoV2 S has enormous value as a BSL-2 agent to measure S-specific antibodies in the context of a bona fide CoV and is a candidate live attenuated SARS-CoV-2 mucosal vaccine that preferentially replicates in the upper airway.

New strategies for the simultaneous and portable detection of multiple enzyme activities are highly desirable for clinical diagnosis and home care. However, the methods developed thus far generally suffer from high costs, cumbersome procedures, and heavy reliance on large-scale instruments. To satisfy the actual requirements of rapid, accurate, and on-site detection of multiple enzyme activities, we report herein a smartphone-assisted programmable microfluidic paper-based analytical device (µPAD) that utilizes colorimetric and photothermal signals for simultaneous, accurate, and visual quantitative detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). Specifically, the operation of this µPAD sensing platform is based on two sequential steps. Cobalt-doped mesoporous cerium oxide (Co-m-CeO2) with remarkable peroxidase-like activities under neutral conditions first catalytically decomposes H2O2 for effectively converting colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB). The subsequent addition of ALP or BChE to their respective substrates produces a reducing substance that can somewhat inhibit the oxTMB transformation for compromised colorimetric and photothermal signals of oxTMB. Notably, these two-step bioenzyme-nanozyme cascade reactions strongly support the straightforward and excellent processability of this platform, which exhibit lower detection limits for ALP and BChE with a detection limit for BChE an order of magnitude lower than those of the other reported paper-based detection methods. The practicability and efficiency of this platform are further demonstrated through the analysis of clinical serum samples. This innovative platform exhibits great potential as a facile yet robust approach for simultaneous, accurate, and on-site visual detection of multiple enzyme activities in authentic samples.

BACKGROUND: Many factors contribute to quality of life (QoL) in patients with schizophrenia, yet limited research examined these factors in patients in China. This cross-sectional study explores subjective QoL and its associated factors in patients. METHODS: The QoL was assessed using the Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale (SQLS). Clinical symptoms were evaluated using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and seven factors were extracted. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) were used to assess depression and anxiety. Cognitive impairment was assessed using the Ascertain Dementia 8 (AD8). The Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale (TESS) and Rating Scale for Extrapyramidal Side Effects (RSESE) were used to evaluate the side effects of medications. RESULTS: We recruited 270 patients (male:142,52.6%, mean age:41.9 ± 9.4 years). Positive correlations were observed between SQLS and its subdomains with the total score of BPRS, PHQ-9, GAD-7, AD8, TESS, and RSESE (all P < 0.005). Patients who were taking activating second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) had lower scores on total SQLS, Motivation/ Energy domain of SQLS (SQLS-ME) as well as Symptoms/ Side effects domain of SQLS (SQLS-SS) compared to those taking non-activating SGAs (all P < 0.005). Multiple regression analysis showed that depressive/ anxiety symptoms and cognitive impairment had significant negative effects on QoL (P ≤ 0.001), while activating SGAs had a positive effect (P < 0.005). Blunted affect and unemployment were inversely associated with the motivation/energy domain (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our findings emphasize the important role of depression/anxiety symptoms and cognitive impairment in the QoL of patients with chronic schizophrenia. Activating SGAs and employment may improve the QoL of these individuals. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This protocol was registered at chictr.org.cn (Identifier: ChiCTR2100043537).

Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) has become an economically important fruit in China. And its cultivation area has significantly expanded over the last three decades (Wang et al. 2020; Zhao et al. 2023). In July 2023, wilting of cherry trees was observed in a cherry plantation in Wenchuan County (31°51'N, 103°56'E, altitude: 1,510 m) in Sichuan Province and approximately 27% of the trees showed symptoms of root rot including soft roots, dark brown to black lesions, yellowing and wilted leaves, and a distinct yellow-brown core discoloration of the inner root core when cut in cross-section. To isolate the causal pathogens, six infected sweet cherry plants with rootstock 'Daqingye' from Cerasus pseudocerasus were randomly selected from the orchard and then the intertwined diseased and healthy roots (5mm× 5mm × 2mm) were washed with sterile water to remove surface soil. The root samples were surface sterilized with 75% ethanol for 30 seconds and NaClO for 30 seconds and washed three times with distilled water. The disinfected tissues were placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 27°C in darkness for 5 days (Zhao et al. 2024). A total of nine fungal isolates with similar morphological characteristics were obtained. The colony obtained through single-spore purification displays a red reverse side and a concentric ring pattern on the front, with a sparse surface. Macroconidia were relatively slender with a curve, like sickle shape, 0 to 3 septate measuring (25.8 to 46.1) µm× (4.2 to 7.5) µm, respectively (n=20). The morphological characteristics were consistent with the description of Fusarium spp. (Li et al. 2021). Among these isolates, only HB5 was selected for additional molecular identification. Three target genes, including the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), partial translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF), and RNA polymerase second largest subunit (RPB2) were amplified using the primers ITS1/ITS4, TEF1-728/FTEF1-re, and fRPB2-5F/fRPB2-7r, respectively (Groenewald et al. 2013; Carbone and Kohn 1999; Reeb et al. 2004). Sequences of HB5 was deposited in GenBank (ITS, PP388208; TEF, PP580036; RPB2, PP580035). A BLAST search revealed high similarity to those of F. solani sequences with 99%, 100% and 100% respectively (MN013858.1, JF740846.1, OR371902.1), and a multilocus phylogenetic tree was generated to represent the molecular identification results. Pathogenicity studies were conducted on the rootstocks from 'Daqingye' of Cerasus pseudocerasus in 1 liter plastic flowerpots. The seedlings were incubated in a constant temperature incubator at 25°C with a humidity level of 65% for two weeks. Following the growth of green leaves, 200ml (1x106 spores/ml) of spore suspensions were poured into pots. After 4 weeks of inoculation, the same symptoms of the inoculated plants were observed consistent with those shown in the field , while control plants were inoculated with distill water with asymptomatic. The inoculated pathogen was confirmed both morphologically and molecularly as described earlier, thereby fulfilling Koch's postulates. It has been reported that Fusarium solani has been reported to cause root rot in various plants in China, including Actinidia sppt, Zanthoxylum bungeanum, Fragaria×ananassa Duch (Song et al.2022; Li et al. 2023; Zhao et al. 2024). To our knowledge, this is the first report of Fusarium solani causing root rot in sweet cherry (Prunus avium). We here also report the severity and outbreak of this disease, which has been found in other regions in recent years and may become prevalent. Further research on disease management strategies is urgently needed to protect sweet cherry production.

The second-order nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE) in non-centrosymmetric materials has recently drawn intense interest, since its inherent rectification could enable various device applications such as energy harvesting and wireless charging. However, previously reported NLHE systems normally suffer from relatively small Hall voltage outputs and/or low working temperatures. In this study, we report the observation of a pronounced NLHE in tellurium (Te) thin flakes at room temperature. Benefiting from the semiconductor nature of Te, the obtained nonlinear response can be readily enhanced through electrostatic gating, leading to a second-harmonic output at 300 K up to 2.8 mV. By utilizing such a giant NLHE, we further demonstrate the potential of Te as a wireless Hall rectifier within the radiofrequency range, which is manifested by the remarkable and tunable rectification effect also at room temperature. Extrinsic scattering is then revealed to be the dominant mechanism for the NLHE in Te, with symmetry breaking on the surface playing a key role. As a simple elemental semiconductor, Te provides an appealing platform to advance our understanding of nonlinear transport in solids and to develop NLHE-based electronic devices.

Myocardial infarction (MI)-induced impaired cardiomyocyte (CM) mitochondrial function and microenvironmental inflammatory cascades severely accelerate the progression of heart failure for compromised myocardial repair. Modulation of the crosstalk between CM mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and STING has been recently identified as a robust strategy in enhancing MI treatment, but remains seldom explored. To develop a novel approach that can address persistent myocardial injury using this crosstalk, we report herein construction of a biomimetic hydrogel system, Rb1/PDA-hydrogel comprised of ginsenoside Rb1/polydopamine nanoparticles (Rb1/PDA NPs)-loaded carboxylated chitosan, 4-arm-PEG-phenylboronic acid (4-arm-PEG-PBA), and 4-arm-PEG-dopamine (4-arm-PEG-DA) crosslinked networks. An optimized hydrogel formulation presents not only desired adhesion properties to the surface of the myocardium, but also adaptability for deep myocardial injection, resulting in ROS scavenging, CM mitochondrial function protection, M1 macrophage polarization inhibition through the STING pathway, and angiogenesis promotion via an internal-external spatial combination. The enhanced therapeutic efficiency is supported by the histological analysis of the infarcted area, which shows that the fibrotic area of the MI rats decreases from 58.4% to 5.5%, the thickness of the left ventricular wall increases by 1-fold, and almost complete recovery of cardiac function after 28 days of treatment. Overall, this study reported the first use of a strong adhesive and injectable hydrogel with mtDNA and STING signaling characteristics for enhanced MI treatment via an internal-external spatial combination strategy.

The objective of our study was to use quantum dots for the purpose of seeing and detecting C-C motif chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5) inside the tissue of sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) and primary tumors. This endeavor aimed to enhance the accuracy of predicting the condition of non-sentinel lymph nodes and provide valuable insights for making informed treatment choices. We analyzed breast cancer patients who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy followed by axillary lymph node removal due to one or two positive sentinel lymph nodes at the Second People's Hospital of Wuhu, China, between August 2018 and July 2022. Quantum dot technology was employed to visualize and determine CCL5 in the tissue samples from 84 patients. Out of a group diagnosed with breast cancer, 208 underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy. From this pool, 84 tested positive and subsequently underwent axillary lymph node removal. The presence of distinct orange-red fluorescence, linked to quantum dots, was evident in the cellular components of both primary tumors and positive sentinel lymph node tissues. We found a significant relationship between higher levels of SLNCCL5 and advanced tumor growth (P < 0.05). To understand the predictive value of SLN CCL5 related to non-sentinel lymph node status, we utilized the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) method. The area under the curve (AUC) calculated was 0.745 with a cutoff point of 23.285. Multivariate logistic regression was used to understand the effect of tumor dimensions and SLNCCL5 levels on non-sentinel lymph node status in specific patients. Both the size of the tumor and SLNCCL5 levels were found to have a significant impact (P < 0.05). Data suggested that the presence of positive SLNCCL5 might serve as an assessment parameter for anticipating the condition of non-SLN in cases of breast cancer involving T1 or T2 tumors with one or two positive sentinel lymph nodes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the incidence, risk factors and trends for vaginal cancer. DESIGN: Retrospective observational design. SETTING: Data were collected from multiple sources, including the Global Cancer Observatory, Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Plus, Global Burden of Disease, World Bank and the United Nations. POPULATION: Individuals diagnosed with vaginal cancer. METHODS: The study collected data on vaginal cancer from the specified sources. The age-standardised rate (ASR) of vaginal cancer was calculated for different regions and age groups. Multivariable and univariable linear regression analyses were performed to examine the associations between risk factors and the incidence of vaginal cancer. Trend analysis was conducted using joinpoint regression analysis, and the average annual percentage change (AAPC) was calculated to quantify the temporal trend. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The main outcome measures of the study were the incidence of vaginal cancer, risk factors associated with the disease and the trend of its incidence over time. RESULTS: There were 17 908 newly reported cases of vaginal cancer (ASR = 0.36, 95% CI 0.30-0.44) in 2020, with the highest ASRs reported in South-Central Asia and Southern Africa. Risk factors associated with a higher incidence of vaginal cancer included a higher prevalence of unsafe sex and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The temporal trend showed an overall rising incidence globally, with Iceland (AAPC = 29.56, 95% CI 12.12-49.71), Chile (AAPC = 22.83, 95% CI 13.20-33.27), Bahrain (AAPC = 22.05, 95% CI 10.83-34.40) and the UK (AAPC = 1.40, 95% CI 0.41-2.39) demonstrating the most significant rising trends. CONCLUSIONS: The significant regional disparities and risk factors associated with vaginal cancer underscore the necessity for targeted interventions and education, particularly in regions with a lower human development index (HDI) and a higher prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The increasing incidence trend emphasises the need for enhanced HPV vaccination rates to prevent the development of vaginal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Ureteral cancer is a rare cancer. This study aimed to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive analysis on the global trends of ureteral cancer incidence and its association with lifestyle and metabolic risk factors. METHODS: The incidence of ureteral cancer was estimated from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Plus and Global Cancer Observatory databases. We analyzed the (1) global incidence of ureteral cancer by region, country, sex, and age group by age-standardized rates (ASR); (2) associated risk factors on a population level by univariable linear regression with logarithm transformation; and (3) incidence trend of ureteral cancer by sex and age group in different countries by Average Annual Percentage Change (AAPC). RESULTS: The global age-standardized rate of ureteral cancer incidence in 2022 was 22.3 per 10,000,000 people. Regions with higher human development index (HDI), such as Europe, Northern America, and East Asia, were found to have a higher incidence of ureteral cancer. Higher HDI and gross domestic product (GDP) and a higher prevalence of smoking, alcohol drinking, physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and lipid disorder were associated with higher incidence of ureteral cancer. An overall increasing trend of ureteral cancer incidence was observed for the past decade, especially among the female population. CONCLUSIONS: Although ureteral cancer was relatively rare, the number of cases reported was rising over the world. The rising trends among females were more evident compared with the other subgroups, especially in European countries. Further studies could be conducted to examine the reasons behind these epidemiological changes and confirm the relationship with the risk factors identified.

Myofibrillar protein (MP) gels are susceptible to oxidation, which can be prevented by complexing with hydrophilic polyphenols, but may cause gel deterioration. Sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5) has been used to induce self-assembly of MP and analyze the impact of self-assembly on the quality of composite gels containing high amounts of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Hydrophobic forces were confirmed as the main driver of self-assembly. Self-assembly reduced the size of the MP-EGCG complex to approximately 670 nm and increased the gel's hydrophobic force by approximately 3.6-fold. The maximum hardness of the Na2S2O5-treated MP-EGCG composite gel was 52.43 g/kg, which was approximately 49% greater than pure MP gel. After oxidative treatment, the Na2S2O5-treated MP-EGCG composite gel had considerably lower carbonyl and dityrosine levels (2.47-µmol/g protein and 450 a.u.) than the control (8.37-µmol/g protein and 964 a.u.). Therefore, Na2S2O5 shows potential as a cost-effective additive for alleviating MP limitations in the food industry.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that the wettability of protein-based emulsifiers is critical for emulsion stability. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of varying epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) concentrations on the wettability of protein-based emulsifiers. Additionally, limited studies have examined the effectiveness of soy protein-EGCG covalent complex nanoparticles with improved wettability as emulsifiers for stabilizing high-oil-phase (≥ 30%) curcumin emulsions. RESULTS: Soy protein isolate (SPI)-EGCG complex nanoparticles (SPIEn) with improved wettability were fabricated to stabilize high-oil-phase curcumin emulsions. The results showed that EGCG forms covalent bonds with SPI, which changes its secondary structure, enhances its surface charge, and improves its wettability. Moreover, SPIEn with 2.0 g L -1 EGCG (SPIEn-2.0) exhibited a better three-phase contact angle (56.8 ± 0.3o) and zeta potential (-27 mV) than SPI. SPIEn-2.0 also facilitated the development of curcumin emulsion gels at an oil volume fraction of 0.5. Specifically, the enhanced network between droplets as a result of the packing effects and SPIEn-2.0 with inherent antioxidant function was more effective at inhibiting curcumin degradation during long-term storage and ultraviolet light exposure. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study indicate that SPIEn with 2.0 g L -1 EGCG (SPIEn-2.0) comprises the optimum conditions for fabricating emulsifiers with improved wettability. Additionally, SPIEn-0.2 can improve the physicochemical stability of high-oil-phase curcumin emulsions, suggesting a novel strategy to design and fabricate high-oil-phase emulsion for encapsulating bioactive compounds. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

The aim of this study was to develop a real-time risk prediction model for extrauterine growth retardation (EUGR). A total of 2514 very preterm infants were allocated into a training set and an external validation set. The most appropriate independent variables were screened using univariate analysis and Lasso regression with tenfold cross-validation, while the prediction model was designed using binary multivariate logistic regression. A visualization of the risk variables was created using a nomogram, while the calibration plot and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to calibrate the prediction model. Clinical efficacy was assessed using the decision curve analysis (DCA) curves. Eight optimal predictors that namely birth weight, small for gestation age (SGA), hypertensive disease complicating pregnancy (HDCP), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), multiple births, cumulative duration of fasting, growth velocity and postnatal corticosteroids were introduced into the logistic regression equation to construct the EUGR prediction model. The area under the ROC curve of the training set and the external verification set was 83.1% and 84.6%, respectively. The calibration curve indicate that the model fits well. The DCA curve shows that the risk threshold for clinical application is 0-95% in both set. Introducing Birth weight, SGA, HDCP, GDM, Multiple births, Cumulative duration of fasting, Growth velocity and Postnatal corticosteroids into the nomogram increased its usefulness for predicting EUGR risk in very preterm infants.
