RESUMO

Due to the vital role of empathy in promoting prosocial behaviors and nurturing social bonds, there is a growing interest in cultivating empathy. Yet, the effectiveness of existing training methods on empathy, especially on different dimensions of empathy (i.e., affective, cognitive, motivational, and behavioral empathy), varies tremendously, and the underlying causes for this heterogeneity remain insufficiently explored. To address this issue, we categorized various training methods into three distinct approaches based on the premise that empathy can be influenced by factors associated with the subject, the object, and their relationship. Respectively, these are Subject-Oriented, Object-Oriented, and Socially Oriented approaches. To examine the effects of training and sustainability of these approaches on different dimensions of empathy, we conducted a meta-analysis encompassing 110 eligible studies with 32, 44, 39, 39, and 91 samples for affective, cognitive, motivational, behavioral, and composite empathy, respectively. Results showed that trainings produced small and unsustainable effects on affective empathy, moderate and unsustainable effects on cognitive empathy, small and sustainable effects on motivational empathy, and moderate and sustainable effects on behavioral empathy. The effects of training on composite empathy were robust but decreased over time. Among the three training approaches, Socially Oriented approaches were the most effective in improving all dimensions of empathy. Subject-Oriented and Object-Oriented approaches were effective only in improving cognitive and composite empathy. Altogether, our study offers practical guidance for selecting appropriate training approaches and proposes theoretical principles for developing optimal training strategies in both basic research and clinical applications. Deep learning has been increasingly used in health management and maintenance decision-making for rotating machinery. However, some challenges must be addressed to make this technology more effective. For example, the collected data is assumed to follow the same feature distribution, and sufficient labeled training data are available. Unfortunately, domain shifts occur inevitably in real-world scenarios due to different working conditions, and acquiring sufficient labeled samples is time-consuming and expensive in complex environments. This study proposes a novel domain adaptive framework called deep Multiscale Conditional Adversarial Networks (MCAN) for machinery fault diagnosis to address these shortcomings. The MCAN model comprises two key components. Constructed by a novel multiscale module with an attention mechanism, the first component is a shared feature generator that captures rich features at different internal perceptual scales, and the attention mechanism determines the weights assigned to each scale, enhancing the model's dynamic adjustment and self-adaptation capabilities. The second component consists of two domain classifiers based on Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) leveraging spatiotemporal features at various levels to achieve domain adaptation in the output space. The deep domain classifier also captures the cross-covariance dependencies between feature representations and classifier predictions, thereby improving the predictions' discriminability. The proposed method has been evaluated using two publicly available fault diagnosis datasets and one condition monitoring experiment. The results of cross-domain transfer tasks demonstrated that the proposed method outperformed several state-of-the-art methods in terms of transferability and stability. This result is a significant step forward in deep learning for health management and maintenance decision-making for rotating machinery, and it has the potential to revolutionize its future application.

Studies have indicated that the human brain exhibits a more robust neural empathic response towards individuals of the same racial ingroup than those of the outgroup. However, the impact of the oxytocinergic system on the dynamic connectivity between brain regions involved in racial ingroup bias in empathy (RIBE) and its implications for real-life social interaction intention remains unclear. To address this gap, we employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate RIBE-modulated neural activities and the influence of the oxytocinergic system at both neural and behavioral levels. Participants homozygous for the A/A and G/G genotypes of the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) rs53576 polymorphism underwent scanning while making judgments about painful versus non-painful stimuli in same-race versus other-race scenarios following either oxytocin (OT) or placebo treatment. The results revealed greater activity in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and anterior insula (AI) in response to same-race compared to other-race models in the G/G group but not in the A/A group. RIBE also modulated the connections between bilateral AI and the ACC, and the effect of OT on this modulatory effect was moderated by genotype rs53576 and interpersonal trust. Moreover, more extensive changes in AI-ACC connections were associated with higher levels of revenge intention in the low interpersonal trust group. Overall, our findings suggest a pivotal role of the oxytocinergic system in the RIBE-modulated neural activities and revenge intention in human interactions with the modulatory effect of interpersonal trust. BACKGROUND: Despite centuries of traditional use of silymarin for hepatoprotection, current randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies on the effectiveness of silymarin in managing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) are limited and inconclusive, particularly when it is administered alone. The low bioavailability of silymarin highlights the possible influence of gut microbiota on the effectiveness of silymarin; however, no human studies have investigated this aspect. OBJECTIVE: To determine the potential efficacy of silymarin in improving MASLD indicators and to investigate the underlying mechanisms related to gut microbiota. METHOD: In this 24-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 83 patients with MASLD were randomized to either placebo (n = 41) or silymarin (103.2 mg/d, n = 42). At 0, 12, and 24 weeks, liver stiffness and hepatic steatosis were assessed using FibroScan, and blood samples were gathered for biochemical detection, while faecal samples were collected at 0 and 24 weeks for 16S rRNA sequencing. RESULTS: Silymarin supplementation significantly reduced liver stiffness (LSM, -0.21 ± 0.17 vs. 0.41 ± 0.17, P = 0.015) and serum levels of γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT, -8.21 ± 3.01 vs. 1.23 ± 3.16, P = 0.042) and ApoB (-0.02 ± 0.03 vs. 0.07 ± 0.03, P = 0.023) but had no significant effect on the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), other biochemical indicators (aminotransferases, total bilirubin, glucose and lipid parameters, hsCRP, SOD, and UA), physical measurements (DBP, SBP, BMI, WHR, BF%, and BMR), or APRI and FIB-4 indices. Gut microbiota analysis revealed increased species diversity and enrichment of Oscillospiraceae in the silymarin group. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that silymarin supplementation could improve liver stiffness in MASLD patients, possibly by modulating the gut microbiota. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The trial was registered at the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2200059043).

BACKGROUNDS: Abnormal metabolism is the hallmark of hepatocellular carcinoma. Targeting energy metabolism has become the major focus of cancer therapy. The natural product, sanguinarine, displays remarkable anti-tumor properties by disturbing energy homeostasis; however, the underlying mechanism has not yet been elucidated. METHODS: The anticancer activity of sanguinarine was determined using CCK-8 and colony formation assay. Morphological changes of induced cell death were observed under electron microscopy. Necroptosis and apoptosis related markers were detected using western blotting. PKM2 was identified as the target by transcriptome sequencing. Molecular docking assay was used to evaluate the binding affinity of sanguinarine to the PKM2 molecule. Furthermore, Alb-CreERT2; PKM2loxp/loxp; Rosa26RFP mice was used to construct the model of HCC-through the intervention of sanguinarine in vitro and in vivo-to accurately explore the regulation effect of sanguinarine on cancer energy metabolism. RESULTS: Sanguinarine inhibited tumor proliferation, metastasis and induced two modes of cell death. Molecular docking of sanguinarine with PKM2 showed appreciable binding affinity. PKM2 kinase activity and aerobic glycolysis rate declined, and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation was inhibited by sanguinarine application; these changes result in energy deficits and lead to necroptosis. Additionally, sanguinarine treatment prevents the translocation of PKM2 into the nucleus and suppresses the interaction of PKM2 with ß-catenin; the transcriptional activity of PKM2/ß-catenin signaling and its downstream genes were decreased. CONCLUSIONS: Sanguinarine showed remarkable anti-HCC activity via regulating energy metabolism by PKM2/ß-catenin signaling. On the basis of these investigations, we propose that sanguinarine might be considered as a promising compound for discovery of anti-HCC drugs.

The COVID-19 pandemic, polarized politics, and heightened stigma and discrimination are salient drivers for negative mental health outcomes, particularly among marginalized racial and ethnic minoritized groups. Intersectionality of race, ethnicity, foreign-born status, and educational attainment may distinctively shape an individual's experience of discrimination and mental health during such unprecedented time. The present study examines the differential associations of racial discrimination and mental health based on an individual's race, ethnicity, foreign-born status, and educational attainment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Analyses were based on a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults collected between October and November 2021 (n = 6276). We utilized multivariable linear regressions to identify the multiplicative effects of race, ethnic, foreign-born status and self-reported racial discrimination on mental health, stratified by educational attainment. Among individuals with lower educational attainment, associations between racial discrimination and poor mental health were stronger among Asians (US-born: ß = -2.07, p = 0.03; foreign-born: ß = -3.18, p = 0.02) and US-born multiracial individuals (ß = -1.96, p = 0.02) than their White counterparts. Among individuals with higher educational attainment, foreign-born Hispanics (ß = -3.66, p < 0.001) and US-born Asians (ß = -2.07, p = 0.01) reported worst mental health when exposed to racial discrimination out of all other racial, ethnic and foreign-born groups. Our results suggest that association of racial discrimination and mental health varies across racial, ethnic, foreign-born, and education subgroups. Using an intersectional approach to address the widening inequities in racial discrimination and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic contextualizes unique experience of discrimination and provides crucial insight on the patterns of mental health among marginalized groups.

Rapid tool wear conditions during the manufacturing process are crucial for the enhancement of product quality. As an extension of our recent works, in this research, a generic in-situ tool wear condition monitoring during the end milling process based on dynamic mode and abnormal evaluation is proposed. With the engagement of dynamic mode decomposition, the real-time response of the sensing physical quantity during the end milling process can be predicted. Besides, by constructing the graph structure of the time series and calculating the difference between the predicted signal and the real-time signal, the anomaly can be acquired. Meanwhile, the tool wear state during the end milling process can be successfully evaluated. The proposed method is validated in milling tool wear experiments and received positive results (the mean relative error is recorded as 0.0507). The research, therefore, paves a new way to realize the in-situ tool wear condition monitoring.

In the face of escalating modern data storage demands and the constraints of Moore's Law, exploring spintronic solutions, particularly the devices based on magnetic skyrmions, has emerged as a promising frontier in scientific research. Since the first experimental observation of skyrmions, topological spin textures have been extensively studied for their great potential as efficient information carriers in spintronic devices. However, significant challenges have emerged alongside this progress. This review aims to synthesize recent advances in skyrmion research while addressing the major issues encountered in the field. Additionally, current research on promising topological spin structures in addition to skyrmions is summarized. Beyond 2D structures, exploration also extends to 1D magnetic solitons and 3D spin textures. In addition, a diverse array of emerging magnetic materials is introduced, including antiferromagnets and 2D van der Waals magnets, broadening the scope of potential materials hosting topological spin textures. Through a systematic examination of magnetic principles, topological categorization, and the dynamics of spin textures, a comprehensive overview of experimental and theoretical advances in the research of topological magnetism is provided. Finally, both conventional and unconventional applications are summarized based on spin textures proposed thus far. This review provides an outlook on future development in applied spintronics.

Mouse models of congenital aortic valve malformations are useful for studying disease pathobiology, but most models have incomplete penetrance [e.g., ∼2 to 77% prevalence of bicuspid aortic valves (BAVs) across multiple models]. For longitudinal studies of pathologies associated with BAVs and other congenital valve malformations, which manifest over months in mice, it is operationally inefficient, economically burdensome, and ethically challenging to enroll large numbers of mice in studies without first identifying those with valvular abnormalities. To address this need, we established and validated a novel in vivo high-frequency (30 MHz) ultrasound imaging protocol capable of detecting aortic valvular malformations in juvenile mice. Fifty natriuretic peptide receptor 2 heterozygous mice on a low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient background (Npr2+/-;Ldlr-/-; 32 males and 18 females) were imaged at 4 and 8 wk of age. Fourteen percent of the Npr2+/-;Ldlr-/- mice exhibited features associated with aortic valve malformations, including 1) abnormal transaortic flow patterns on color Doppler (recirculation and regurgitation), 2) peak systolic flow velocities distal to the aortic valves reaching or surpassing ∼1,250 mm/s by pulsed-wave Doppler, and 3) putative fusion of cusps along commissures and abnormal movement elucidated by two-dimensional (2-D) imaging with ultrahigh temporal resolution. Valves with these features were confirmed by ex vivo gross anatomy and histological visualization to have thickened cusps, partial fusions, or Sievers type-0 bicuspid valves. This ultrasound imaging protocol will enable efficient, cost effective, and humane implementation of studies of congenital aortic valvular abnormalities and associated pathologies in a wide range of mouse models.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We developed a high-frequency ultrasound imaging protocol for diagnosing congenital aortic valve structural abnormalities in 4-wk-old mice. Our protocol defines specific criteria to distinguish mice with abnormal aortic valves from those with normal tricuspid valves using color Doppler, pulsed-wave Doppler, and two-dimensional (2-D) imaging with ultrahigh temporal resolution. This approach enables early identification of valvular abnormalities for efficient and ethical experimental design of longitudinal studies of congenital valve diseases and associated pathologies in mice.

AIMS: Accurate prediction of preeclampsia could improve maternal outcomes. However, the role of uterine artery Doppler ultrasound in predicting preeclampsia remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We comprehensively searched several electronic databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science, covering studies published from the time of database creation to September 23, 2023. Studies on the predictive value of uterine artery Doppler ultrasound for preeclampsia were included. The primary pregnancy outcome was preeclampsia. The risk of bias was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 scoring scale. RESULTS: The use of resistance index (RI) for predicting preeclampsia demonstrated the highest sensitivity of 0.73 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.30-0.94) and specificity of 0.90 (95% CI, 0.72-0.97), with a pooled area under the curve value of 0.91 (95% CI, 0.88-0.93). The use of pulsatility index (PI) for predicting preeclampsia showed a sensitivity of 0.65 (95% CI, 0.45-0.81) and specificity of 0.88 (95% CI, 0.77-0.94). Furthermore, preeclampsia prediction via notching showed a sensitivity of 0.54 (95% CI, 0.38-0.68) and specificity of 0.89 (95% CI, 0.79-0.95). CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the varying predictive performance of different preeclampsia indices. PI and RI demonstrated moderate-to-high sensitivity and specificity, whereas notching exhibited relatively lower sensitivity but comparable specificity. Further research and validation are warranted to consolidate these results and enhance the accuracy of preeclampsia prediction.

BACKGROUND: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) is a rare, autosomal dominant endocrine disease. Currently, the RET proto-oncogene is the only gene implicated in MEN2A pathogenesis. Once an RET carrier is detected, family members should be screened to enable early detection of medullary thyroid carcinoma, pheochromocytoma, and hyperparatitity. Among these, medullary thyroid carcinoma is the main factor responsible for patient mortality. Accordingly, delineating strategies to inform clinical follow-up and treatment plans based on genes is paramount for clinical practitioners. CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we present RET proto-oncogene mutations, clinical characteristics, and treatment strategies in a family with MEN2A. A family study was conducted on patients diagnosed with MEN2A. DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood of family members, and first-generation exon sequencing of the RET proto-oncogene was conducted. The C634Y mutation was identified in three family members spanning three generations. Two patients were sequentially diagnosed with pheochromocytomas and bilateral medullary thyroid carcinomas. A 9-year-old child harboring the gene mutation was diagnosed with medullary thyroid carcinoma. Surgical resection of the tumors was performed. All family members were advised to undergo complete genetic testing related to the C634Y mutation, and the corresponding treatments administered based on test results and associated clinical guidelines. CONCLUSION: Advancements in MEN2A research are important for familial management, assessment of medullary thyroid cancer invasive risk, and deciding surgical timing.

The progressive emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants has necessitated the urgent exploration of novel therapeutic strategies to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro) represents an evolutionarily conserved therapeutic target for drug discovery. This study highlights the discovery of meisoindigo (Mei), derived from the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Indigo naturalis, as a novel non-covalent and nonpeptidic Mpro inhibitor. Substantial optimizations and structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies, guided by a structure-based drug design approach, led to the identification of several Mei derivatives, including S5-27 and S5-28, exhibiting low micromolar inhibition against SARS-CoV-2 Mpro with high binding affinity. Notably, S5-28 provided significant protection against wild-type SARS-CoV-2 in HeLa-hACE2 cells, with EC50 up to 2.66 µM. Furthermore, it displayed favorable physiochemical properties and remarkable gastrointestinal and metabolic stability, demonstrating its potential as an orally bioavailable drug for anti-COVID-19 therapy. This research presents a promising avenue for the development of new antiviral agents, offering hope in the ongoing battle against COVID-19.

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome resulting from the invasion of the human body by bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms. One of its most prevalent complications is acute lung injury, which places a significant medical burden on numerous countries and regions due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. MicroRNA (miRNA) plays a critical role in the body's inflammatory response and immune regulation. Recent studies have focused on miR-21-5p in the context of acute lung injury, but its role appears to vary in different models of this condition. In the LPS-induced acute injury model of A549 cells, there is differential expression, but the specific mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, our aim is to investigate the changes in the expression of miR-21-5p and SLC16A10 in a type II alveolar epithelial cell injury model induced by LPS and explore the therapeutic effects of their targeted regulation. A549 cells were directly stimulated with 10 µg/ml of LPS to construct a model of LPS-induced cell injury. Cells were collected at different time points and the expression of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1ß), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and miR-21-5p were measured by RT-qPCR and western blot. Then miR-21-5p mimic transfection was used to up-regulate the expression of miR-21-5p in A549 cells and the expression of IL-1ß and TNF-α in each group of cells was measured by RT-qPCR and western blot. The miRDB, TargetScan, miRWalk, Starbase, Tarbase and miR Tarbase databases were used to predict the miR-21-5p target genes and simultaneously, the DisGeNet database was used to search the sepsis-related gene groups. The intersection of the two groups was taken as the core gene. Luciferase reporter assay further verified SLC16A10 as the core gene with miR-21-5p. The expression of miR-21-5p and SLC16A10 were regulated by transfection or inhibitors in A549 cells with or without LPS stimulation. And then the expression of IL-1ß and TNF-α in A549 cells was tested by RT-qPCR and western blot in different groups, clarifying the role of miR-21-5p-SLC16A10 axis in LPS-induced inflammatory injury in A549 cells. (1) IL-1ß and TNF-α mRNA and protein expression significantly increased at 6, 12, and 24 h after LPS stimulation as well as the miR-21-5p expression compared with the control group (P < 0.05). (2) After overexpression of miR-21-5p in A549 cells, the expression of IL-1ß and TNF-α was significantly reduced after LPS stimulation, suggesting that miR-21-5p has a protection against LPS-induced injury. (3) The core gene set, comprising 51 target genes of miR-21-5p intersecting with the 1448 sepsis-related genes, was identified. This set includes SLC16A10, TNPO1, STAT3, PIK3R1, and FASLG. Following a literature review, SLC16A10 was selected as the ultimate target gene. Dual luciferase assay results confirmed that SLC16A10 is indeed a target gene of miR-21-5p. (4) Knocking down SLC16A10 expression by siRNA significantly reduced the expression of IL-1ß and TNF-α in A549 cells after LPS treatment (P < 0.05). (5) miR-21-5p inhibitor increased the expression levels of IL-1ß and TNF-α in A549 cells after LPS stimulation (P < 0.05). In comparison to cells solely transfected with miR-21-5p inhibitor, co-transfection of miR-21-5p inhibitor and si-SLC6A10 significantly reduced the expression of IL-1ß and TNF-α (P < 0.05). MiR-21-5p plays a protective role in LPS-induced acute inflammatory injury of A549 cells. By targeting SLC16A10, it effectively mitigates the inflammatory response in A549 cells induced by LPS. Furthermore, SLC16A10 holds promise as a potential target for the treatment of acute lung injury.

BACKGROUND: A short cervix in the second trimester is known to increase the risk of preterm birth, which can be reduced with the administration of vaginal progesterone. However, some studies have suggested that a significant number of cases still experience preterm birth despite progesterone treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed to investigate the potential value of transvaginal cervical elasticity measured by E-Cervix as a predictor for spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) in singleton pregnancies receiving progesterone treatment for a short cervix (CL ≤ 2.5 cm) diagnosed at 18 to 24 weeks' gestation. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective study was conducted at a single center premature high-risk clinic from January 2020 to July 2022. Singleton pregnancies with a short cervix at 18 to 24 weeks' gestation were enrolled. Cervical elastography using E-Cervix was performed, and maternal and neonatal demographic characteristics, cervical length (CL), elasticity contrast index (ECI), cervical hardness ratio, mean internal os strain (IOS), and mean external os strain (EOS) were compared before and after progesterone treatment in sPTB and term birth groups. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between elasticity parameters and spontaneous preterm birth. The screening performance of CL and optimal cervical elasticity parameters in predicting sPTB was evaluated using receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS: A total of 228 singleton pregnant women were included in the study, among which 26 (11.4%) had sPTB. There were no significant differences in maternal characteristics and gestational age at enrollment between women with and without sPTB. At the start of progesterone treatment, there were no significant differences in cervical elasticity parameters between the two groups. After two weeks of progesterone treatment, women who had sPTB showed significantly higher levels of ECI, IOS, EOS (p = 0.0108, 0.0001, 0.016), and lower hardness ratio (p = 0.011) compared to those who had a full-term birth. Cervical length did not show significant differences between the two groups, regardless of whether progesterone treatment was administered before or after. Among the post-treatment cervical elasticity parameters, IOS and EOS were associated with a 3.38-fold and 2.29-fold increase in the risk of sPTB before 37 weeks (p = 0.032, 0.047, respectively). The AUROC of the combined model including CL, IOS, and EOS (0.761, 95% CI0.589-0.833) was significantly higher than the AUROC of CL alone (0.618, 95% CI 0.359-0.876). At a fixed false-positive of 13%, the addition of IOS and EOS in the CL model increased sensitivity from 34.6% to 57.6%, PPV from 25.7% to 36.5%, and NPV from 91.1% to 94.1%. CONCLUSION: When assessing the risk of sPTB in singleton pregnancies with a short cervix receiving progesterone therapy, relying solely on cervical length is insufficient. It is crucial to also evaluate cervical stiffness, particularly the strain of the internal and external os, using cervical elastography.

Objective: To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese-translated Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale (GLFS-25) for the assessment of locomotive syndrome (LS) in individuals surviving malignancies. Methods: 393 tumor survivors at a general hospital in China were recruited. The Chinese version of GLFS-25 was utilized to conduct a cross-sectional survey to ascertain the tool's efficacy in measuring LS in this cohort. The scale's validity was examined through content, structural and discriminant validity assessments, while its reliability was investigated by determining the internal consistency (via Cronbach's α coefficient) and test-retest reliability (via intragroup correlation coefficient, ICC). Results: The Chinese-adapted GLFS-25 demonstrated a robust scale-level content validity index of 0.94, while item-level content validity indices ranged from 0.83 to 1.00 across individual items. The suitability of the scale for structural validity assessment was confirmed via exploratory factor analysis, yielding a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of 0.930 and a significant Bartlett's test of sphericity (χ2 = 3217.714, df = 300, P < 0.001). Subsequent confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) extracted four distinct factors: Social Activity Engagement, Daily Living Ability, Pain Experience and Physical Mobility. These factors accounted for 72.668 % of the variance, indicating substantial construct validity for measuring LS among this population. CFA supported the model's fit with the following indices: χ2/df = 1.559, RMSEA = 0.077, GFI = 0.924, CFI = 0.941, NFI = 0.919, and TLI = 0.933. The factor loadings for the four factors ranged from 0.771 to 0.931, indicating the items corresponding to the four factors effectively represented the constructs they were designed to measure. The correlation coefficients among the four factors were between 0.306 and 0.469, all lower than the square roots of the respective AVEs (0.838-0.867). This suggests a moderate correlation among the four factors and a distinct differentiation between them, indicating the Chinese version of the GLFS-25 exhibits strong discriminant validity in Chinese tumor survivors. Reliability testing revealed a high Cronbach's α coefficient for the overall scale at 0.961, with the subscales yielding coefficients of 0.751, 0.836, 0.930, and 0.952. The overall ICC was determined to be 0.935, with subscale ICCs ranging from 0.857 to 0.941, reinforcing the scale's reliability in this context. Conclusions: The Chinese version of the GLFS-25 exhibits strong reliability and validity for the assessment of LS in tumor survivors. It may serve as a diagnostic tool for LS, contributing to the prevention and management of musculoskeletal disorders and enhancing the prognosis for this patient population.

Resveratrol (RES) has been reported to prevent hyperuricemia (HUA); however, its effect on intestinal uric acid metabolism remains unclear. This study evaluated the impact of RES on intestinal uric acid metabolism in mice with HUA induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). Moreover, we revealed the underlying mechanism through metagenomics, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), and 16S ribosomal RNA analysis. We demonstrated that RES reduced the serum uric acid, creatinine, urea nitrogen, and urinary protein levels, and improved the glomerular atrophy, unclear renal tubule structure, fibrosis, and renal inflammation. The results also showed that RES increased intestinal uric acid degradation. RES significantly changed the intestinal flora composition of HFD-fed mice by enriching the beneficial bacteria that degrade uric acid, reducing harmful bacteria that promote inflammation, and improving microbial function via the upregulation of purine metabolism. The FMT results further showed that the intestinal microbiota is essential for the effect of RES on HUA, and that Lactobacillus may play a key role in this process. The present study demonstrated that RES alleviates HFD-induced HUA and renal injury by regulating the gut microbiota composition and the metabolism of uric acid.

Silymarin, salvianolic acids B, and puerarin were considered healthy food agents with tremendous potential to ameliorate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the mechanisms by which they interact with gut microbiota to exert benefits are largely unknown. After 8 weeks of NAFLD modeling, C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into five groups and fed a normal diet, high-fat diet (HFD), or HFD supplemented with a medium or high dose of Silybum marianum extract contained silymarin or polyherbal extract contained silymarin, salvianolic acids B, and puerarin for 16 weeks, respectively. The untargeted metabolomics and 16S rRNA sequencing were used for molecular mechanisms exploration. The intervention of silymarin and polyherbal extract significantly improved liver steatosis and recovered liver function in the mice, accompanied by an increase in probiotics like Akkermansia and Blautia, and suppressed Clostridium, which related to changes in the bile acids profile in feces and serum. Fecal microbiome transplantation confirmed that this alteration of microbiota and its metabolites were responsible for the improvement in NAFLD. The present study substantiated that alterations of the gut microbiota upon silymarin and polyherbal extract intervention have beneficial effects on HFD-induced hepatic steatosis and suggested the pivotal role of gut microbiota and its metabolites in the amelioration of NAFLD.

BACKGROUND: At present, clinical nutritional care for patients with pancreatic cancer focuses more on the observation of the effect of enteral parenteral nutrition, and there is a lack of personalised care plans for weight-loss control. We used the Delphi method to construct a set of personalised nursing programmes to effectively control the rate of postoperative weight loss in patients with pancreatic cancer. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional investigation. Through literature analysis, literature review and data review, a personalised nursing plan for the postoperative weight-loss control in patients with pancreatic cancer was preliminarily developed. From October to December 2022, the Delphi method was adopted to conduct two questionnaires for 32 experts working in fields related to pancreatic diseases in Grade-A tertiary hospitals from four different departments. After statistical processing, the personalised nursing plan was determined according to the perceived level of importance, coefficient of variation, full score rate and recognition rate of the indicators. RESULTS: The recovery rates of the two rounds of consultation were 93.75% and 100%, respectively, and the overall authority coefficient of the experts was 0.918, which represented 'authoritative'. In terms of importance, the coefficient of variation was 0-0.137; in terms of feasibility, the coefficient of variation ranged from 0.09 to 0.194. Finally, a scheme consisting of 36 entries in 8 dimensions was built. This programme is comprehensive in content, meets the nutritional diagnosis and treatment needs of patients in the stage of postoperative rehabilitation, provides relatively comprehensive nutritional assessment and support and has a robust system and feasibility. CONCLUSIONS: The individualised nursing plan for patients with pancreatic cancer with postoperative weight-loss control based on the Delphi method is highly scientific and reliable and has positive significance.

Evapotranspiration (ET) is at the heart of the global water, energy, and carbon cycles. As ET is difficult and expensive to measure, it is crucial to develop estimation models that can be widely applied. Currently, an improved Priestley-Taylor (PT) model considers soil moisture stress, temperature constraints, and leaf senescence; however, its parameter (fs) for simulating crop senescence is based on empirical values, making it difficult to apply to different varieties and complex external conditions and thus challenging to generalize. We improved the parameters fs in the original model based on the chlorophyll decomposition that accompanies crop senescence through easily observable SPAD values (Soil-Plant Analysis Development readings) in the field. We validated the improved model by obtaining ET of different rice varieties in 2022 and 2023 using the energy balance residual method at the Free Air Concentration Enrichment Experimental (FACE) Facility located in Yangzhou City, China. The results showed that the simulation of leaf senescence using SPAD values was feasible and could be extended to different varieties. The new model using improved leaf senescence parameter for estimating ET and transpiration (T) in three plots (2022 and 2023) exhibited slightly enhanced accuracy, particularly at the later stages of crop growth. Moreover, the higher the T/ET ratio of the cropland, the more significant the improvement. This new development enhances the ability of PT models to estimate ET and T using readily available field observations and provides some suggestions for wider application in the field for other crop species.

Theories of moral development propose that empathy is transmitted across individuals. However, the mechanisms through which empathy is socially transmitted remain unclear. Here, we combine computational learning models and functional MRI to investigate whether, and if so, how empathic and non-empathic responses observed in others affect the empathy of female observers. The results of three independent studies showed that watching empathic or non-empathic responses generates a learning signal that respectively increases or decreases empathy ratings of the observer. A fourth study revealed that the learning-related transmission of empathy is stronger when observing human rather than computer demonstrators. Finally, we show that the social transmission of empathy alters empathy-related responses in the anterior insula, i.e., the same region that correlated with empathy baseline ratings, as well as its functional connectivity with the temporoparietal junction. Together, our findings provide a computational and neural mechanism for the social transmission of empathy that accounts for changes in individual empathic responses in empathic and non-empathic social environments.
