Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) play crucial roles in marine carbon and nitrogen cycles by fixing inorganic carbon and performing the initial step of nitrification. Evaluation of carbon and nitrogen metabolism popularly relies on functional genes such as amoA and accA. Increasing studies suggest that quorum sensing (QS) mainly studied in biofilms for bacteria may serve as a universal communication and regulatory mechanism among prokaryotes; however, this has yet to be demonstrated in marine planktonic archaea. To bridge this knowledge gap, we employed a combination of metabolic activity markers (amoA, accA, and grs) to elucidate the regulation of AOA-mediated nitrogen, carbon processes, and their interactions with the surrounding heterotrophic population. Through co-transcription investigations linking metabolic markers to potential key QS genes, we discovered that QS molecules could regulate AOA's carbon, nitrogen, and lipid metabolisms under different conditions. Interestingly, specific AOA ecotypes showed a preference for employing distinct QS systems and a distinct QS circuit involving a typical population. Overall, our data demonstrate that QS orchestrates nitrogen and carbon metabolism, including the exchange of organic metabolites between AOA and surrounding heterotrophic bacteria, which has been previously overlooked in marine AOA research.

Nitrification is the dominant process for nitrous oxide (N2O) production under aerobic conditions, but the relative contribution of the autotrophic nitrifiers (the ammonia-oxidising archaea (AOA), the ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOB) and the comammox) to this process is still unclear in some soil types. This is particularly the case in paddy soils under different fertilization regimes. We investigated active nitrifiers and their contribution to nitrification and N2O production in a range of unfertilized and fertilized paddy soils, using 13CO2-DNA based stable isotope probing (SIP) technique combined with a series of specific nitrification inhibitors, including acetylene (C2H2), 3, 4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) and 2-phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl 3-oxide (PTIO). The soils had a long-term history of fertilizer application, including chemical fertilizer only, a mixture of chemical fertilizers (70 %) and chicken manure (30 %) or a mixture of rice straw and chemical fertilizers. 13CO2-DNA-SIP and Illumina MiSeq sequencing demonstrated that comammox clades A.1 and B were active nitrifiers in all fertilized paddy soils. Inhibitor experiment showed that AOB largely contributed to nitrification activity and N2O emission in all paddy soils, while comammox contribution was more significant than AOA. Fertilization considerably altered nitrifiers' relative contribution to nitrification activity and N2O emissions. Applying organic fertilizers significantly decreased the N2O emissions but increased the contribution of comammox to the process. These findings expand the functional ecological niche of comammox, revealing their nitrification role and N2O production in other ecosystems than oligotrophic habitats.

Despite the many potential applications of an accurate indoor positioning system (IPS), no universal, readily available system exists. Much of the IPS research to date has been based on the use of radio transmitters as positioning beacons. Visible light positioning (VLP) instead uses LED lights as beacons. Either cameras or photodiodes (PDs) can be used as VLP receivers, and position estimates are usually based on either the angle of arrival (AOA) or the strength of the received signal. Research on the use of AOA with photodiode receivers has so far been limited by the lack of a suitable compact receiver. The quadrature angular diversity aperture receiver (QADA) can fill this gap. In this paper, we describe a new QADA design that uses only three readily available parts: a quadrant photodiode, a 3D-printed aperture, and a programmable system on a chip (PSoC). Extensive experimental results demonstrate that this design provides accurate AOA estimates within a room-sized test chamber. The flexibility and programmability of the PSoC mean that other sensors can be supported by the same PSoC. This has the potential to allow the AOA estimates from the QADA to be combined with information from other sensors to form future powerful sensor-fusion systems requiring only one beacon.

Endogenous denitrification (ED) can make full use of the carbon sources and avoid replenishment of it. However, strengthening the storage of intracellular carbon sources is an important factor in improving ED efficiency. In this study, employed batch experiments using real domestic wastewater in the anaerobic/oxic (A/O) process. The anaerobic and oxic processes were run for 4 h under ambient conditions with the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in the oxic stage controlled at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 3.0 mg/L, respectively. The results showed that the content of poly-ß-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) reached its peak at 60 min (1.25 mmolC/L). And with DO concentrations of 1.5 mg/L, the contents of glycogen (Gly) were 27.74 mmolC/L. Subsequently, the AOA-SBR was established to investigate its effect on the long-term nitrogen removal performance of domestic wastewater by optimizing the anaerobic time and DO concentrations. The results showed that at an anaerobic time of 60 min and DO concentration of 1.5 mg/L, the storage of the intracellular carbon sources was highest and the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency increased to 82.12%. In addition, Candidatus Competibacter dominated gradually in the system as the strategy was optimized.

BACKGROUND: Ataxia with oculomotor apraxia type 2 (AOA2) is an autosomal recessive disorder presenting with cerebellar ataxia, sensory-motor axonal neuropathy, oculomotor apraxia, cerebellar atrophy and high alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) serum level. AOA2 is due to coding mutations of the SETX gene, mapped to chromosome 9q34. Seldom noncoding mutations affecting RNA processing have been reported too. To date psychiatric symptoms have never been reported in AOA2. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19 years-old man came to our attention for progressive gait ataxia debuted five years earlier. His past medical history was unremarkable, while his parents were consanguineous. On neurological examination, he had bilateral horizontal gaze-evoked nystagmus with hypometric saccades and saccadic horizontal smooth pursuit, appendicular ataxia, limbs and trunk myoclonic involuntary movements with hands' dystonic postures and dance of the tendons. Psychological evaluation described intrusive and obsessive thoughts experienced by the patient, then diagnosed as obsessive-compulsive disorder. Blood tests detected an elevated AFP level. Brain MRI showed cerebellar atrophy, while electroneuromyography revealed an axonal sensory-motor polyneuropathy. In the suspicion of a pathology belonging to the autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias (ARCA) spectrum disorder, a direct search of point mutations by whole-exome sequencing was performed revealing a novel biallelic variant in SETX gene (c.6208+2dupT), which was classified as likely pathogenic. CONCLUSION: The present case expands the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum of AOA2, reporting a novel likely pathogenic SETX mutation (c.6208+2dupT) and highlighting an early psychiatric involvement in AOA2, suggesting the need for psychiatric assessment in these neurologic patients.

Achieving low-cost advanced nitrogen (N) removal from municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) remains a challenge. A plug-flow anaerobic/oxic/anoxic (AOA) system with a mixtures bypass (MBP) integrating partial nitrification (PN), endogenous carbon denitrification (EnD), partial denitrification (PD), and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox), was constructed to treat actual sewage with a low C/N ratio. The effluent concentrations and removal efficiency of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) during stable operation were 2.9 ± 0.9 mg/L and 93.1 ± 2.0 %, respectively. EnD was enhanced by the MBP through the efficient utilization of polyhydroxyalkanoates generated in the anaerobic zone. PD was promoted by the addition of carries and sodium acetate to the anoxic tank and the subsequent implantation of the Anammox biofilm successfully coupled PD/A. Stable PN was obtained with a satisfactory nitrite accumulation ratio of 92.6 %, facilitated by carriers and the introduction of hydroxylamine in the oxic zone. Mass balance analysis revealed that EnD and Anammox contributed 40.8 % and 48.2 % of TIN removal, respectively. The enrichment and synergistic effects of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, denitrifying bacteria, glycogen-accumulating organisms, and anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria formed a diverses bacterial basis for the establishment of PN, EnD, PD, and Anammox (PNEnD/A) in the AOA system. The successful integration of PNEnD/A into the AOA process provides an innovative approach for low-cost advanced N removal in WWTPs.

Atlanto-occipital assimilation is a congenital craniovertebral junction malformation where the partial or complete fusion of the atlas and occiput occurs. Atlanto-occipital assimilation can be associated with numerous complications, including basilar invagination, atlantoaxial subluxation, Chiari malformation, congenital vertebral bodies fusion, and cord compression. As a result, vigilant identification and accurate reporting of atlanto-occipital assimilation are essential. The purpose of this review article is to discuss the numerous complications and associations of atlanto-occipital assimilation, such that an accurate diagnosis could be made for this commonly missed pathology.

With the addition of Bluetooth AOA/AOD direction-finding capabilities in the Bluetooth 5.1 protocol and the introduction of antenna array technology into the Bluetooth platform to further enhance positioning accuracy, Bluetooth has gradually become a research hotspot in the field of indoor positioning due to its standard protocol specifications, rich application ecosystem, and outstanding advantages such as low power consumption and low cost compared to other indoor positioning technologies. However, current indoor positioning based on Bluetooth AOA/AOD suffers from overly simplistic core algorithm implementations. When facing different application scenarios, the standalone AOA or AOD algorithms exhibit weak applicability, and they also encounter challenges such as poor positioning accuracy, insufficient real-time performance, and significant effects of multipath propagation. These existing problems and deficiencies render Bluetooth lacking an efficient implementation solution for indoor positioning. Therefore, this paper proposes a study on Bluetooth AOA and AOD indoor positioning algorithms. Through an analysis of the principles of Bluetooth's newly added direction-finding functionality and combined with research on array signal DOA estimation algorithms, the paper ultimately integrates the least squares algorithm to optimize positioning errors in terms of accuracy and incorporates an anti-multipath interference algorithm to address the impacts of multipath effects in different scenarios. Experimental testing demonstrates that the indoor positioning algorithms applicable to Bluetooth AOA and AOD can effectively mitigate accuracy errors and overcome multipath effects, exhibiting strong applicability and significant improvements in real-time performance.

INTRODUCTION: Home residency programs can provide medical students with opportunities for networking, mentorship, research, and exposure to surgeries. The goal of this project was to understand the potential impact of home surgical residencies on student match rates into specific surgical specialties. METHODS: This 5-year retrospective study (2019-2023) analyzed 12,916 matched applicants from 155 United States MD programs through publicly available match lists. Odds ratios (ORs) were used to determine the likelihood of students from institutions with home surgical residency programs (home programs) matching into desired surgical specialties compared to students from institutions without home programs. Additional variables included the Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society statuses of the medical school, the number of faculty, and the type of residency program. RESULTS: Of the matched applicants, 11,442 had home programs resulting in a 39.1% match rate into surgical specialties compared to a 22.3% match rate for students without a home program (OR: 1.76) (P < 0.001). Of the applicants with a home program compared to those without a home program, 69.2% matched into an academic residency (OR: 1.06), 7.7% matched into a community residency (OR: 0.90), 13.6% matched into a combined residency (OR: 0.95), and 2.5% matched into a military residency (OR: 1.31). CONCLUSIONS: Medical students graduating from institutions with home programs were 1.76 times more likely to match into a surgical residency program compared to those graduating from institutions without a home program. Future studies should look at how access to certain resources may influence a student's match rate.

Introduction: Psycholinguistic studies have argued for the age of acquisition (AoA) of words as a marker of concept learning, showing that the semantic features of concepts themselves influence the age at which their labels are learned. However, empirical evidence suggests that semantic features such as imageability and linguistic phenomena such as frequency do not adequately predict AoA. The present study takes the developmental approach of embodied cognition and investigates the effects of sensorimotor experiences on the ease of acquisition of the concept acquired in bilinguals. Specifically, we investigated (1) whether the sensorimotor experience can explain AoA beyond frequency; (2) and whether these patterns are consistent across L1 Chinese and L2 English. Methods: We conducted sensorimotor rating measures in both Chinese and English on 207 items in which Chinese-English bilingual adults were requested to evaluate the extent to which they experienced concepts by employing six perceptual senses and five effectors for actions located in various regions of the body. Meanwhile, data on AoA and frequency were collected. Results: The present study showed the sensorimotor experience was closely linked with AoAs in both languages. However, the correlation analysis revealed a trend of higher correlations between AoAs for the same concepts and L1 Chinese, relative to L2 English for the present Chinese-English bilinguals. Importantly, the hierarchical regression analysis demonstrated that after controlling for frequency, sensorimotor experience explained additional variance in L1 AoA. However, L2 sensorimotor experience did not explain the variance in L2 AoA. Sensorimotor experience explained more share of variance in L1 AoA but frequency accounted for more variance in L2 AoA. Discussion: The findings suggest that concept acquisition should consider the grounding in appropriate sensorimotor experience beyond linguistic phenomena like frequency.

Underwater mobile acoustic source target localization encounters several challenges, including the unknown propagation speed of the source signal, uncertainty in the observation platform's position and velocity (i.e., platform systematic errors), and economic costs. This paper proposes a new two-step closed-form localization algorithm that jointly estimates the angle of arrival (AOA), time difference of arrival (TDOA), and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA) to address these challenges. The algorithm initially introduces auxiliary variables to construct pseudo-linear equations to obtain the initial solution. It then exploits the relationship between the unknown and auxiliary variables to derive the exact solution comprising solely the unknown variables. Both theoretical analyses and simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed method accurately estimates the position, velocity, and speed of the sound source even with an unknown sound speed and platform systematic errors. It achieves asymptotic optimality within a reasonable error range to approach the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Furthermore, the algorithm exhibits low complexity, reduces the number of required localization platforms, and decreases the economic costs. Additionally, the simulation experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed localization method across various scenarios, outperforming other comparative algorithms.

Ammonia oxidation is the rate-limiting step in nitrification and the key step in the nitrogen (N) cycle. Most soil nutrients and biological indicators are extremely sensitive to irrigation systems, from the perspective of improving soil fertility and soil ecological environment, the evaluation of different irrigation systems and suitability of selection, promote crop production and soil quality, study the influence of the soil microenvironment contribute to accurate evaluation of irrigation farmland soil health. Based on the amoA gene, the abundance and community diversity of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and their responses to soil physicochemical factors and enzyme activities were studied in semi-arid areas of Northeast China. The study consisted of three irrigation systems: flood irrigation (FP), shallow buried drip irrigation (DI), and mulched drip irrigation (MF). The results showed that DI and MF significantly increased the contents of alkaline hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN), nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), soil moisture, and the activities of ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) and hydroxylamine oxidase (HAO). Compared with FP, DI significantly increased the abundance of soil AOA and AOB, while MF significantly increased the abundance of soil AOB. Irrigation systems significantly affected the community composition of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM). Also, AN and soil moisture had the greatest influence on the community composition of AOA and AOB, respectively. The AOB community had better stability and stress resistance. Moreover, the symbiotic network of AOB in the three irrigation systems was more complex than that of AOA. Compared with FP, the AOA community under treatment DI had higher complexity and stability, maintaining the versatility and sustainability of the ecosystem, while the AOB community under treatment MF had higher transfer efficiency in terms of matter and energy. In conclusion, DI and MF were more conducive to the propagation of soil AOM in the semi-arid area of Northeast China, which can provide a scientific basis for rational irrigation and N regulation from the perspective of microbiology.

Introduction: Through the combined use of two nitrification inhibitors, Dicyandiamide (DCD) and chlorate with nitrogen amendment, this study aimed to investigate the contribution of comammox Nitrospira clade B, ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) to nitrification in a high fertility grassland soil, in a 90-day incubation study. Methods: The soil was treated with nitrogen (N) at three levels: 0 mg-N kg-1 soil, 50 mg-N kg-1 soil, and 700 mg-N kg-1 soil, with or without the two nitrification inhibitors. The abundance of comammox Nitrospira, AOA, AOB, and nitrite oxidising bacteria (NOB) was measured using qPCR. The comammox Nitrospira community structure was assessed using Illumina sequencing. Results and Discussion: The results showed that the application of chlorate inhibited the oxidation of both NH4+ and NO2- in all three nitrogen treatments. The application of chlorate significantly reduced the abundance of comammox Nitrospira amoA and nxrB genes across the 90-day experimental period. Chlorate also had a significant effect on the beta diversity (Bray-Curtis dissimilarity) of the comammox Nitrospira clade B community. Whilst AOB grew in response to the N substrate additions and were inhibited by both inhibitors, AOA showed litle or no response to either the N substrate or inhibitor treatments. In contrast, comammox Nitrospira clade B were inhibited by the high ammonium concentrations released from the urine substrates. These results demonstrate the differential and niche responses of the three ammonia oxidising communities to N substrate additions and nitrification inhibitor treatments. Further research is needed to investigate the specificity of the two inhibitors on the different ammonia oxidising communities.

Rivers play a significant role in the global nitrous oxide (N2O) budget. However, the microbial sources and sinks of N2O in river systems are not well understood or quantified, resulting in the prolonged neglect of nitrification. This study investigated the isotopic signatures of N2O, thereby quantifying the microbial source of N2O production and the degree of N2O reduction in the Yellow River. Although denitrification has long been considered to be the dominant pathway of N2O production in rivers, our findings indicated that denitrification only accounted for 18.3% (8.2%-43.0%) of the total contribution to N2O production in the Yellow River, with 50.2%-80.2% being concurrently reduced. The denitrification contribution to N2O production (R2 = 0.44, p < 0.01) and N2O reduction degree (R2 = 0.70, p < 0.01) were positively related to the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content. Similar to urban rivers and eutrophic lakes, denitrification was the primary process responsible for N2O production (43.0%) in certain reaches with high organic content (DOC = 5.29 mg/L). Nevertheless, the denitrification activity was generally constrained by the availability of electron donors (average DOC = 2.51 mg/L) throughout the Yellow River basin. Consequently, nitrification emerged as the primary contributor in the well-oxygenated Yellow River. Additionally, our findings further distinguished the respective contribution of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) to N2O emissions. Although AOB dominated the N2O production in the Yellow River, the AOA specie abundance (AOA/(AOA + AOB)) contributed up to 32.6%, which resulted in 25.6% of the total nitrifier-produced N2O, suggesting a significant occurrence of AOA in the oligotrophic Yellow River. Overall, this study provided a non-invasive approach for quantifying the microbial sources and sinks to N2O emissions, and demonstrated the substantial role of nitrification in the large oligotrophic rivers.

Quantitative Structure Activity Relation (QSAR) models are mathematical techniques used to link structural characteristics with biological activities, thus considered a useful tool in drug discovery, hazard evaluation, and identifying potentially lethal molecules. The QSAR regulations are determined by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). QSAR models are helpful in discovering new drugs and chemicals to treat severe diseases. In order to improve the QSAR model's predictive power for biological activities of naturally occurring indoloquinoline derivatives against different cancer cell lines, a modified machine learning (ML) technique is presented in this paper. The Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) operators are used in the suggested model to enhance the performance of the Sinh Cosh Optimizer (SCHO). Moreover, this improvement functions as a feature selection method that eliminates superfluous descriptors. An actual dataset gathered from previously published research is utilized to evaluate the performance of the suggested model. Moreover, a comparison is made between the outcomes of the suggested model and other established methodologies. In terms of pIC50 values for different indoloquinoline derivatives against human MV4-11 (leukemia), human HCT116 (colon cancer), and human A549 (lung cancer) cell lines, the suggested model achieves root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.6822, 0.6787, 0.4411, and 0.4477, respectively. The biological application of indoloquinoline derivatives as possible anticancer medicines is predicted with a high degree of accuracy by the suggested model, as evidenced by these findings.

The primary objective of this research is to propose and examine a technique for accurately determining the azimuth angle of cooperative objects. The proposed methodology aims were to achieve fast processing, increased precision, and enhanced safety. A transmitter emitting a continuous wave with a hopping frequency was utilized in combination with interferometry techniques to measure the angle of arrival (AOA) between two antennas. The efficient method incorporates a coarse-to-fine strategy that improves processing speed and azimuth angle accuracy and to effectively eliminate any signal interference, a Fourier bandpass filter is utilized. The coarse estimation is performed using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm, while the fine estimation is achieved using the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. The fine estimation involves utilizing coarse angle input and a scan limit of 2.5° that is determined from the largest simulated root mean square error (RMSE) value. Modelling and outdoor testing using software defined radio (SDR) have been carried out to assess the proposed methodology. The results from the analysis indicate that the proposed method produces the desired RMSE estimation of less than 1°, thereby validating its accuracy and effectiveness.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of soil pH change, and nitrogen amendment on ammonia oxidiser abundance and comammox Nitrospira community composition. The experimental design used soil mesocosms placed in a temperature-controlled incubator for 90 days. A Templeton silt loam was used as its physiochemical properties are typical of the region's dairy farms. The results showed that comammox Nitrospira clade B preferred the natural (pH 6.1-6.2) soil pH with no applied nitrogen. Furthermore, synthetic urine (N700) decreased the abundance of comammox Nitrospira clade B. This may have been because the large amounts of available ammonia in the N700 treatments inhibited the growth of comammox Nitrospira. These results suggest that while comammox Nitrospira clade B are present in New Zealand dairy farm soils, but their role in nitrification in the very high nitrogen environment under a urine patch in grazed pastures may be limited. Further research is needed to confirm this. In contrast to comammox, the AOB community (dominated by Nitrosospira) responded positively to the application of synthetic urine. The response was greatest in the high pH soil (7.1), followed by the natural and then the low pH (4.9) soils. This may be due to the difference in ammonia availability. At high pH, the ammonia/ammonium equilibrium favours ammonia production. Calculated ammonia availability in the N700 treatments accurately predicted the AOB amoA gene abundance. Interestingly, the AOA community abundance (which was predominantly made up of Thaumarchaeota group I.1b clade E) seemed to prefer the natural and high pH soils over the low pH. This may be due to the specific lineage of AOA present. AOA did not respond to the application of nitrogen.

Ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms, including AOA (ammonia-oxidizing archaea), AOB (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria), and Comammox (complete ammonia oxidization) Nitrospira, have been reported to possess the capability for the biotransformation of sulfonamide antibiotics. However, given that nitrifying microorganisms coexist and operate as communities in the nitrification process, it is surprising that there is a scarcity of studies investigating how their interactions would affect the biotransformation of sulfonamide antibiotics. This study aims to investigate the sulfamonomethoxine (SMM) removal efficiency and mechanisms among pure cultures of phylogenetically distinct nitrifiers and their combinations. Our findings revealed that AOA demonstrated the highest SMM removal efficiency and rate among the pure cultures, followed by Comammox Nitrospira, NOB, and AOB. However, the biotransformation of SMM by AOA N. gargensis is reversible, and the removal efficiency significantly decreased from 63.84 % at 167 h to 26.41 % at 807 h. On the contrary, the co-culture of AOA and NOB demonstrated enhanced and irreversible SMM removal efficiency compared to AOA alone. Furthermore, the presence of NOB altered the SMM biotransformation of AOA by metabolizing TP202 differently, possibly resulting from reduced nitrite accumulation. This study offers novel insights into the potential application of nitrifying communities for the removal of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) in engineered ecosystems.
