Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis is a major cause of peritoneal dysfunction and failure. The main issue regarding the treatment is whether to remove the catheter surgically or to treat with antibiotics alone. Notably, PD-associated peritonitis is commonly caused by gram-positive cocci, but rarely by Listeria monocytogenes and Burkholderia cepacia. Here, we report a patient diagnosed with PD-associated peritonitis caused by L. monocytogenes and B. cepacia who presented with a fever, abdominal pain, and turbid dialysate and had been receiving PD for over 20 years. After 2 weeks of antibiotic treatment, the catheter in the patient was surgically removed. Culture and pathology results revealed pathogen growth, foreign body granuloma with chronic inflammation, and inflammatory cells with fibroblast infiltration. The patient was switched to hemodialysis. She eventually recovered and was discharged. The patient presented fair health at the 3-month follow-up. In conclusion, sequential dialysate white blood cell count may help clinicians decide the course of treatment and guide the timing of surgical intervention.

The Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) consists of opportunistic pathogens known to cause pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals, especially those with cystic fibrosis. Treating Bcc pneumonia is challenging due to the pathogens' high multidrug resistance. Therefore, inhalation therapy with tobramycin powder, which can achieve high antibiotic concentrations in the lungs, is a promising treatment option. In this study, we investigated potential mechanisms that could compromise the effectiveness of tobramycin therapy. By selecting for Burkholderia cenocepacia survivors against tobramycin, we identified three spontaneous mutations that disrupt a gene encoding a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of cobalamin (Vitamin B12). This disruption may affect the production of succinyl-CoA by methylmalonyl-CoA mutase, which requires adenosylcobalamin as a cofactor. The depletion of cellular succinyl-CoA may impact the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, which becomes metabolically overloaded upon exposure to tobramycin. Consequently, the mutants exhibited significantly reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Both the wild-type and mutants showed tolerance to tobramycin and various other bactericidal antibiotics under microaerobic conditions. This suggests that compromised ROS-mediated killing, due to the impacted TCA cycle, underlies the mutants' tolerance to bactericidal antibiotics. The importance of ROS-mediated killing and the potential emergence of mutants that evade it through the depletion of cobalamin (Vitamin B12) provide valuable insights for developing strategies to enhance antibiotic treatments of Bcc pneumonia.

The qualified presumption of safety (QPS) process was developed to provide a safety assessment approach for microorganisms intended for use in food or feed chains. In the period covered by this statement, no new information was found that would change the status of previously recommended QPS TUs. The TUs in the QPS list were updated based on a verification, against their respective authoritative databases, of the correctness of the names and completeness of synonyms. A new procedure has been established to ensure the TUs are kept up to date in relation to recent taxonomical insights. Of 83 microorganisms notified to EFSA between October 2023 and March 2024 (47 as feed additives, 25 as food enzymes or additives, 11 as novel foods), 75 were not evaluated because: 15 were filamentous fungi, 1 was Enterococcus faecium, 10 were Escherichia coli, 1 was a Streptomyces (all excluded from the QPS evaluation) and 48 were TUs that already have a QPS status. Two of the other eight notifications were already evaluated for a possible QPS status in the previous Panel Statement: Heyndrickxia faecalis (previously Weizmannia faecalis) and Serratia marcescens. One was notified at genus level so could not be assessed for QPS status. The other five notifications belonging to five TUs were assessed for possible QPS status. Akkermansia muciniphila and Actinomadura roseirufa were still not recommended for QPS status due to safety concerns. Rhizobium radiobacter can be recommended for QPS status with the qualification for production purposes. Microbacterium arborescens and Burkholderia stagnalis cannot be included in the QPS list due to a lack of body of knowledge for its use in the food and feed chain and for B. stagnalis also due to safety concerns. A. roseirufa and B. stagnalis have been excluded from further QPS assessment.

Bacterial exopolysaccharides (EPS) are extracellular polymer-based substances recently defined as potential plant biostimulants, as they can increase nutrient uptake, water retention, and resistance to abiotic stress. As sugar-based substances, the bacteria producing them need to grow in a sugar-rich substrate. Hence, some agri-food by-products could be used as suitable carbon sources for EPS production as a cost-effective and more sustainable alternative to conventional substrates. Thus, this study aimed to produce EPS from specific bacterial strains through solid-state fermentation (SSF) using agri-food waste as a low-cost substrate. Six residues and five bacterial strains were tested in a lab-scale SSF system. From the assessed substrate-strain combinations, Burkholderia cepacia with ginger juice waste (GJW) resulted in the most promising considering several process parameters (EPS production, cumulative oxygen consumption, biomass growth, reducing sugars consumption). Also, dynamic monitoring of the system allowed for establishing 5 days as a suitable fermentation time. Then, using response surface methodology (Box-Behnken design), the process was optimised based on airflow rate (AF), inoculum size (IS), and micronutrient concentration (MN). In this stage, the best conditions found were at 0.049 (± 0.014) L h-1 per gram of dry matter (DM) for AF, 8.4 (± 0.9) E + 09 CFU g-1 DM for IS, and 0.07 (± 0.01) mL g-1 DM for MN, reaching up to 71.1 (± 3.2) mg crude EPS g-1 DM. Results show the potential of this approach to provide a new perspective on the value chain for the agri-food industry by introducing it to a circular economy framework.

INTRODUCTION: Melioidosis may occasionally be encountered in non-endemic areas and medical imaging is frequently used to identify and characterise sites of disease. The purpose of this study is to describe the spectrum of imaging findings encountered in melioidosis patients treated in the tertiary public hospitals of Perth, Western Australia, between 2002 and 2022. METHODS: A database search and electronic medical record review was used to identify cases. Cases were included if they had Burkholderia pseudomallei isolated on culture and if they had at least one diagnostic imaging study performed at a Perth public tertiary hospital. The relevant imaging studies were reviewed, and imaging findings were recorded. RESULTS: Thirty-six cases were identified. The most common disease manifestation was bacteraemia (72%, 26 cases), followed by pulmonary infection (58%, 21 cases), skin and soft tissue infection (22%, eight cases), prostate abscess (14%, five cases) and septic arthritis (6%, two cases). A previously unreported case of isolated melioid pleural effusion was identified, as was a case of reactivated chronic latent pulmonary melioidosis with an apparent delay of over 20 years between the onset of symptoms and the time of infection. In cases with pulmonary melioidosis, the major lung abnormalities on CT chest could be categorised into one of two distinct patterns: nodular-predominant (78%) or consolidation-predominant (22%). CONCLUSION: Further research is required to assess the utility of the pattern-based categorisation of lung abnormalities on CT chest seen in the pulmonary melioidosis cases of this series.

INTRODUCTION: Non-fermenting Gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB) other than Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii complex are pathogens of interest due to their ability to cause health-care associated infections and display complex drug resistance phenotypes. However, their clinical and microbiological landscape is still poorly characterized. METHODS: Observational retrospective study including all hospitalized patients presenting with a positive positive blood culture (BC) episode caused by less common NFGNB over a four-year period (January 2020-December 2023). Clinical-microbiological features and factors associated with mortality were investigated. RESULTS: Sixty-six less common NFGNB isolates other than Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter species causing 63 positive BC episodes were recovered from 60 patients. Positive BC episodes were predominantly sustained by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (49.2%) followed by Achromobacter species (15.9%) that exhibited the most complex resistance phenotype. Positive BC episodes had bloodstream infection criteria in 95.2% of cases (60 out 63), being intravascular device (30.2%) and respiratory tract (19.1%) the main sources of infection. Fourteen-day, 30-day, and in-hospital mortality rates were 6.4%, 9.5%, and 15.9%, respectively. The longer time from admission to the positive BC episode, older age, diabetes, admission due to sepsis, and higher Charlson Comorbidity Index were identified as the main predictors of in-hospital mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Positive BC episodes sustained by NFGNB other than Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter species were predominantly sustained by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Achromobacter species, having bloodstream infection criteria in the vast majority of cases. Factors that have emerged to be associated with mortality highlighted how these species may have more room in prolonged hospitalisation and at the end of life for patients with chronic organ diseases.

Background: In current literature there are only scarce data on the host inflammatory response during Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) persistence. The primary objective of the present research was to carry out cross-sectional analyses of biomarkers and evaluate disease progression in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients with chronic Bcc infection and pathogen-free ones. The secondary aim was to assess prospectively overall survival of the study participants during up to 8 years of follow-up. Methods: The study included 116 paediatric patients with CF; 47 CF patients were chronically infected with Bcc, and 69 individuals were Bcc free. Plasma and sputum biomarkers (neutrophil elastase, MMP-8, MMP-9, MMP-12, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-18, IL-22, IL-23, IL-17, IFN-γ, TGFß1, TNF-α) were analysed using commercially available kits. Besides, inhibitory effect of dexamethasone on proliferative response of PHA-stimulated peripheral blood lymphocytes had been assessed. Results: Bcc infected patients did not differ from Bcc free ones in demographic and clinical parameters, but demonstrated an increased rate of glucose metabolism disturbances and survival disadvantage during prolong follow-up period. Biomarkers analyses revealed elevated TNF-α and reduced IL-17F levels in sputum samples of Bcc infected patients. These patients also demonstrated improvement of peripheral blood lymphocyte sensitivity to steroid treatment and reduction in plasma pro-inflammatory (IL-17F and IL-18) and anti-inflammatory (TGFß1 and IL-10) cytokine concentrations. Conclusions: Reduction in IL-17F levels may have several important consequences including increase in steroid sensitivity and glycemic control disturbances. Further investigations are needed to clarify the role of IL-17 cytokines in CF complication development. Low plasma TGFß1 and IL-10 levels in Bcc infected group may be a sign of subverted activity of regulatory T cells. Such immune alterations may be one of the factors contributing to the development of the cepacia syndrome.

Infection-related glomerulonephritis (IRGN) is a rare but severe complication of bacterial infections, including subacute bacterial endocarditis (SBE). We present a case of a 15-year-old male with bilateral lower limb swelling, facial puffiness, frothy urine, and dyspnea. Laboratory investigations revealed abnormal kidney function tests and imaging studies confirmed infective endocarditis. Blood cultures isolated Burkholderia cepacia and methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus. Kidney biopsy confirmed immune complex-mediated glomerulonephritis. The patient received multidisciplinary care, including respiratory support, hemodialysis, antibiotics, and blood transfusion. This case highlights the importance of recognizing and promptly managing IRGN secondary to SBE to prevent irreversible renal damage and systemic complications.

Melioidosis is a severe infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, an intracellular pathogen with a high mortality rate and significant antibiotic resistance. The high mortality rate and resistance to antibiotics have drawn considerable attention from researchers studying melioidosis. This study evaluated the effects of various concentrations (75, 50, and 25 µg/mL) of promethazine hydrochloride (PTZ), a potent antihistamine, on biofilm formation and lipase activity after 24 h of exposure to B. thailandensis E264. A concentration-dependent decrease in both biofilm biomass and lipase activity was observed. RT-PCR analysis revealed that PTZ treatment not only made the biofilm structure loose but also reduced the expression of btaR1, btaR2, btaR3, and scmR. Single gene knockouts of quorum sensing (QS) receptor proteins (∆btaR1, ∆btaR2, and ∆btaR3) were successfully constructed. Deletion of btaR1 affected biofilm formation in B. thailandensis, while deletion of btaR2 and btaR3 led to reduced lipase activity. Molecular docking and biological performance results demonstrated that PTZ inhibits biofilm formation and lipase activity by suppressing the expression of QS-regulated genes. This study found that repositioning PTZ reduced biofilm formation in B. thailandensis E264, suggesting a potential new approach for combating melioidosis.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis, the disease endemic in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. We report complete genome sequences of paired isogenic B. pseudomallei isolated from a 12-year-old Thai male presenting with acute urinary tract infection before (SCBP001) and after (SCBP007) a decrease in susceptibility to ceftazidime.

Acute dacryocystitis caused by Burkholderia Cepacia and Sphingomonas Paucimobilis is uncommon. To the best of our knowledge, presence of mixed pathogens Burkholderia Cepacia and Sphingomonas Paucimobilis causing acute dacryocystitis in immunocompetent patients never been described. Burkholderia Cepacia and Sphingomonas Paucimobilis been reported only as a single microorganism causing other ocular infections in immunocompromised patients. Middle age, medically free female patient, presented to the emergency department at our hospital, with a history of nasolacrimal duct obstruct (NLDO) complaining of inferior preocular swelling associated with localized pain diagnosed as acute dacryocystitis. She was on oral Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, oral Nitroimidazole antimicrobial and topical Tobramycin from elsewhere. However, no improvement had been noticed. We kept the patient on the same medications and swaps taken for culture and sensitivity. Patient presented to the first follow-up appointment with no improvement on her status. Culture and sensitivity revealed 2 pathogens: Burkholderia Cepacia and Sphingomonas Paucimobilis. We have changed the antibiotic to oral Trimethoprim/ Sulfamethoxazole as it showed positive sensitivity to the pathogens based on the sensitivity chart. Second follow-up appointment patient's condition improved.

Glanders is a rare zoonotic disease caused by Burkholderia mallei (B. mallei). B. mallei can cause pneumonia, abscesses, osteomyelitis in severe cases, sepsis, and even death in humans. In this report, we present a 15-year-old male patient living in a rural area who was diagnosed with glanders. The patient, who did not have any previous disease, was followed up with a diagnosis of pneumonia in the hospital, where he was admitted with complaints of cough and abdominal pain and presented to us with pain, redness, and swelling in his leg. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lower extremity revealed osteomyelitis in the fourth and fifth metatarsals of the right foot. B. mallei growth was detected in the abscess culture. Meropenem treatment was started. The patient's symptoms regressed with treatment. The patient was discharged with oral ciprofloxacin for B. mallei eradication. Glanders are usually transmitted through direct contact with infected animals, especially single-hoofed animals such as horses, or through inhalation of aerosols containing B. mallei. It is a rare disease-causing pneumonia and abscesses and can be life-threatening in severe cases. Diagnosis of glanders is difficult because the initial symptoms are non-specific. Isolation of B. mallei in culture is the gold standard for diagnosing the disease. There is no clear recommendation for treating glanders and imipenem; meropenem ceftazidime can be used based on antibiotic susceptibility tests.

Burkholderia is a genus consisting of several species including the Burkholderia pseudomallei group, Burkholderia cepacia complex and other phytopathogens. Burkholderia species is a gram-negative bacillus with protean presentation that can be acquired from various sources, including water, soil, plant surfaces, and hospital environments. The organism on Gram staining is seen as gram-negative rod and on culture, the colonies are non-lactose fermenting. As it can mimic other diseases, it is frequently misdiagnosed and there is lack of awareness about the clinical spectrum of disease and diagnosis. This study aims to investigate varied clinical manifestations, identify potential risk factors and transmission modes and contribute to enhancing the clinical management of diseases. The increasing prevalence of Burkholderia infection implies its potential emergence as a significant public health concern, compounded by the growing incidence of diabetes, which has the potential to escalate the overall disease burden. The principal finding of the case series highlighted a spectrum of clinical presentations, emphasizing the need for comprehensive diagnostic strategies and tailored therapeutic interventions. These strategies will address the diverse manifestations and challenges posed by Burkholderia infections. This underscores the importance of heightened awareness among clinicians and microbiologists, given the need for extended treatment to achieve a complete cure and prevent potential relapses.

Background: Biofilm production in nonfermenting Gram-negative bacteria influences drug resistance. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different antibiotics on biofilm eradication of clinical isolates of Achromobacter, Burkholderia, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Methods: Clinical isolates were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry in a third-level hospital in Monterrey, Mexico. Crystal violet staining was used to determine biofilm production. Drug susceptibility testing was determined by broth microdilution in planktonic cells and biofilm cells. Results: Resistance in planktonic cells was moderate to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and low to chloramphenicol, minocycline, levofloxacin (S. maltophilia and Burkholderia), ceftazidime, and meropenem (Burkholderia and Achromobacter). Biofilm eradication required higher drug concentrations of ceftazidime, chloramphenicol, levofloxacin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole than planktonic cells (p < 0.05). Levofloxacin showed biofilm eradication activity in S. maltophilia, minocycline and meropenem in Burkholderia, and meropenem in Achromobacter. Conclusions: Drug resistance increased due to biofilm production for some antibiotics, particularly ceftazidime and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for all three pathogens, chloramphenicol for S. maltophilia and Burkholderia, and levofloxacin for Burkholderia. Some antibiotics could be used for the treatment of biofilm-associated infections in our population, such as levofloxacin for S. maltophilia, minocycline and meropenem for Burkholderia, and meropenem for Achromobacter.

BACKGROUND: Melioidosis, a disease induced by Burkholderia pseudomallei, poses a significant health threat in tropical areas where it is endemic. Despite the availability of effective treatments, mortality rates remain notably elevated. Many risk factors are associated with mortality. This study aims to develop a scoring system for predicting the in-hospital mortality from melioidosis using readily available clinical data. METHODS: The data were collected from Surin Hospital, Surin, Thailand, during the period from April 2014 to March 2017. We included patients aged 15 years and above who had cultures that tested positive for Burkholderia pseudomallei. The clinical prediction rules were developed using significant risk factors from the multivariable analysis. RESULTS: A total of 282 patients with melioidosis were included in this study. In the final analysis model, 251 patients were used for identifying the significant risk factors of in-hospital fatal melioidosis. Five factors were identified and used for developing the clinical prediction rules, and the factors were as follows: qSOFA ≥ 2 (odds ratio [OR] = 2.39, p= 0.025), abnormal chest X-ray findings (OR = 5.86, p < 0.001), creatinine ≥ 1.5 mg/dL (OR = 2.80, p = 0.004), aspartate aminotransferase ≥50 U/L (OR = 4.032, p < 0.001), and bicarbonate ≤ 20 mEq/L (OR = 2.96, p = 0.002). The prediction scores ranged from 0 to 7. Patients with high scores (4-7) exhibited a significantly elevated mortality rate exceeding 65.0% (likelihood ratio [LR+] 2.18, p < 0.001) compared to the low-risk group (scores 0-3) with a lower mortality rate (LR + 0.18, p < 0.001). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was 0.84, indicating good model performance. CONCLUSIONS: This study presents a simple scoring system based on easily obtainable clinical parameters to predict in-hospital mortality in melioidosis patients. This tool may facilitate the early identification of high-risk patients who could benefit from more aggressive treatment strategies, potentially improving clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.

Microbial symbionts associate with multicellular organisms on a continuum from facultative associations to mutual codependency. In some of the oldest intracellular symbioses there is exclusive vertical symbiont transmission, and co-diversification of symbiotic partners over millions of years. Such symbionts often undergo genome reduction due to low effective population sizes, frequent population bottlenecks, and reduced purifying selection. Here, we describe multiple independent acquisition events of closely related defensive symbionts followed by genome erosion in a group of Lagriinae beetles. Previous work in Lagria villosa revealed the dominant genome-eroded symbiont of the genus Burkholderia produces the antifungal compound lagriamide and protects the beetle's eggs and larvae from antagonistic fungi. Here, we use metagenomics to assemble 11 additional genomes of lagriamide-producing symbionts from seven different host species within Lagriinae from five countries, to unravel the evolutionary history of this symbiotic relationship. In each host species, we detected one dominant genome-eroded Burkholderia symbiont encoding the lagriamide biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC). Surprisingly, however, we did not find evidence for host-symbiont co-diversification, or for a monophyly of the lagriamide-producing symbionts. Instead, our analyses support at least four independent acquisition events of lagriamide-encoding symbionts and subsequent genome erosion in each of these lineages. By contrast, a clade of plant-associated relatives retained large genomes but secondarily lost the lagriamide BGC. In conclusion, our results reveal a dynamic evolutionary history with multiple independent symbiont acquisitions characterized by high degree of specificity. They highlight the importance of the specialized metabolite lagriamide for the establishment and maintenance of this defensive symbiosis.

We report a rare case of latent melioidosis activation in a patient with a distant travel history to an endemic region. Melioidosis is an infection caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei which is highly endemic in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. The patient exhibited common clinical risk factors, presenting with urinary tract infection and bacteremia. The treatment course was complicated by the adverse effect of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. This case underscores the importance of early detection and appropriate treatment of melioidosis, particularly given its expanding global distribution.

Identifying genomic markers for phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) is vital for advancing agricultural sustainability. This study utilizes whole-genome sequencing and comprehensive bioinformatics analysis, examining the genomes of 76 PSB strains with the aid of specialized genomic databases and analytical tools. We have identified the pqq gene cluster, particularly the pqqC gene, as a key marker for (P) solubilization capabilities. The pqqC gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of precursors to 2-keto-D-gluconic acid, which significantly enhances P solubilization in soil. This gene's importance lies not only in its biochemical function but also in its prevalence and effectiveness across various PSB strains, distinguishing it from other potential markers. Our study focuses on Burkholderia cepacia 51-Y1415, known for its potent solubilization activity, and demonstrates a direct correlation between the abundance of the pqqC gene, the quantitative release of P, and the production of 2-keto-D-gluconic acid over a standard 144-h cultivation period under standardized conditions. This research not only underscores the role of the pqqC gene as a universal marker for the rapid screening and functional annotation of PSB strains but also highlights its implications for enhancing soil fertility and crop yields, thereby contributing to more sustainable agricultural practices. Our findings provide a foundation for future research aimed at developing targeted strategies to optimize phosphate solubilization, suggesting areas for further investigation such as the integration of these genomic insights into practical agricultural applications to maximize the effectiveness of PSB strains in real-world soil environments.

OBJECTIVES: Rice (Oryza sativa) is the most important food for more than two thirds of the world's population. Bangladesh is the third largest producer and consumer of rice globally. Recently, several symptoms of Bacterial Panicle Blight (BPB) in rice, including seedling blight, sheath rot, floret sterility, and spotted grains, have been detected in the country. In addition, the presence of the most prevalent and virulent causative agent of BPB, Burkholderia glumae, has been confirmed in rice displaying symptoms of the disease. BPB could become one of the next emerging diseases of rice in Bangladesh, and a complete genome of a B. glumae strain from the country will help clarify its origin and devise proper management systems to continue sustainable rice production. DATA DESCRIPTION: We report the first complete genome sequence of a B. glumae strain (BD_21g) isolated from symptomatic rice grains in Bangladesh (Natore District). The genome contains 2 chromosomes (1 and 2, with 3,417,499 and 3,855,283 bp, respectively) and 4 plasmids (1-4, with 123,248, 46,628, 88,744 and 53,064 bp, respectively).

Melioidosis is a potentially severe disease caused by the gram-negative soil-dwelling bacterium called Burkholderia pseudomallei. The true breadth of the distribution of this tropical pathogen is starting to emerge with environmental and clinical isolates frequently characterized in new countries and regions. Even so, isolates, clinical cases, and genetic data from the continent of Africa remain scant. We previously confirmed the presence of B. pseudomallei in the environment of Ghana, unmasking a new area of endemicity for this pathogen. Here, we describe the genetic characteristics of isolates obtained from that environmental survey. Twenty-one isolates were subjected to whole genome sequencing and found to represent three discrete sequence types (ST), one of which was novel, and designated ST2058. Phylogenetic analysis places this novel isolate within a B. pseudomallei clade that includes genomes derived from the Americas, although it is closely related to a sub-clade that includes isolates from Africa. Importantly, phenotypic characterization demonstrates common features including API 20NE profiles and B. pseudomallei CPS to support existing diagnostics, and susceptibility to standard of care antibiotics often used in the clinical management of melioidosis. These findings add to our knowledge about the presence and distribution of B. pseudomallei in Africa and represent the first published genomes out of Ghana.
