BACKGROUND: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection is a significant public health concern in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, being widely prevalent and the main risk factor for cervical cancer. We aimed to assess knowledge and perception towards HPV, acceptability of the HPV vaccine, and HPV vaccination rates among university students in Education City, Doha, Qatar. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey utilized proportional quota-sampling, with quotas based on university, sex, and nationality, to recruit students from seven universities between February and September 2022. The English language questionnaire requested socio-demographic information, knowledge, and attitudes about HPV infection and the vaccine. The chi-square test, Student t-test, Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon tests and multivariable ordinal logistic regression were used to assess differences in proportion, mean, and median according to broad HPV knowledge categories. RESULTS: Three hundred and ninety-eight students were recruited (response rate = 82.3%), of whom 251 (63.1%) were female. Mean age was 21.7 years. Eighty-nine (22.4%, 95% CI 18.4-26.8%) students had poor knowledge about HPV, 220 (55.3%, 95% CI 50.2-60.2%) students had some awareness, and 89 (22.4%, 95% CI 18.4-26.8%) students were knowledgeable. Age, nationality, and field of study influenced the students' knowledge about HPV. Only 25 (6.3%) students had previously been vaccinated against HPV. However, 71% of the unvaccinated students reported being willing to get vaccinated if recommended by their healthcare provider. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, 77.7% of the student population had some-to-good levels of knowledge about HPV-related infection, cancer, and vaccination. There are gaps in the student population's understanding and knowledge about HPV. Increasing knowledge can be key toward shared decision-making for HPV vaccination among eligible populations. Targeted public health campaigns and integration into childhood vaccination programs should be critical first steps, especially as most of the surveyed students had a positive outlook on getting vaccinated. Healthcare professionals should be incentivized to increase their HPV knowledge and communication skills, while policymakers can work toward easing barriers in integrating HPV vaccinations in the immunization schedule and encouraging overall HPV vaccination uptake.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the critical role of sequencing technology in disease control and outbreak response. However, resource limitations and challenging environments often impede such efforts in low and middle-income countries. This study aimed to investigate the spectrum of viral co-infections, particularly with human viral pathogens, in SARS-CoV-2 positive individuals in Sierra Leone using metagenomic sequencing, evaluating the feasibility of utilizing this technology for epidemiological and evolutionary surveillance of pathogens related to public health in low-income environments. METHODS: We retrospectively collected and analyzed 98 nasopharyngeal swab specimens from SARS-CoV-2 positive individuals in Sierra Leone. Samples were pre-processed locally and transferred to China via FTA cards for metagenomic sequencing, which was performed using the Novaseq platform. The study focused on the identification of nasopharyngeal viruses co-infecting with SARS-CoV-2, with a deeper analysis of significant human viral pathogens such as HPV. RESULTS: The study identified 22 viral taxa from 20 families, including 4 human viruses. Notably, 19.4% of samples showed HPV co-infection with 34 distinct types, predominantly beta and gamma HPVs. Multiple HPV types were found in individual samples, indicating a high complexity of viral co-infections. CONCLUSIONS: The identification of a wide range of co-infecting viruses, particularly multiple HPV genotypes, highlights the complexity of viral interactions and their potential implications for public health. These findings enhance our understanding of viral co-infections and provide valuable insights for public health interventions in Sierra Leone. Further research is needed to explore the clinical significance of these findings and their impact on disease outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has become an important etiological driver of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), leading to unique tumor characteristics. However, the interplay between HPV-associated tumor cells and tumor microenvironment (TME) remains an enigma. METHODS: We performed a single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) on HPV-positive (HPV+) and HPV-negative (HPV‒) OPSCC tumors, each for three samples, and one normal tonsil tissue. Ex vivo validation assays including immunofluorescence staining, cell line co-culture, and flow cytometry analysis were used to test specific subtypes of HPV+ tumor cells and their communications with T cells. RESULTS: Through a comprehensive single-cell transcriptome analysis, we uncover the distinct transcriptional signatures between HPV+ and HPV‒ OPSCC. Specifically, HPV+ OPSCC tumor cells manifest an enhanced interferon response and elevated expression of the major histocompatibility complex II (MHC-II), potentially bolstering tumor recognition and immune response. Furthermore, we identify a CXCL13+CD4+ T cell subset that exhibits dual features of both follicular and pro-inflammatory helper T cells. Noteworthily, HPV+ OPSCC tumor cells embrace extensive intercellular communications with CXCL13+CD4+ T cells. Interaction with HPV+ OPSCC tumor cells amplifies CXCL13 and IFNγ release in CD4+T cells, fostering a pro-inflammatory TME. Additionally, HPV+ tumor cells expressing high MHC-II and CXCL13+CD4+ T cell prevalence are indicative of favorable overall survival rates in OPSCC patients. CONCLUSIONS: Together, our study underscores a synergistic inflammatory immune response orchestrated by highly immunogenic tumor cells and CXCL13+CD4+ T cells in HPV+ OPSCC, offering useful insights into strategy development for patient stratification and effective immunotherapy in OPSCC.

It is now established that patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have an increased risk of developing cervical cancer (CC) or its precursor, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). However, the underlying mechanisms of this association have not been elucidated. RA is characterized by unresolved chronic inflammation. It is suggested that human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in RA patients exacerbates inflammation, increasing the risk of CC. The tumor microenvironment in RA patients with CC is also marked by chronic inflammation, which aggravates the manifestations of both conditions. Gut and vaginal dysbiosis are also considered potential mechanisms that contribute to the chronic inflammation and aggravation of RA and CC manifestations. Numerous clinical and pre-clinical studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of various nutritional approaches to attenuate chronic inflammation, including polyunsaturated fatty acids and their derivatives, specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), probiotics, prebiotics, and certain diets. We believe that successful resolution of chronic inflammation and correction of dysbiosis, in combination with current anti-RA and anti-CC therapies, is a promising therapeutic approach for RA and CC. This approach could also reduce the risk of CC development in HPV-infected RA patients.

Gingiva hyperpigmentation resulting from physiological melanosis causes aesthetic discomfort and is usually perceived as a disease by patients because healthy attached gingiva is typically characterized by coral pink coloring with stippling and scalloped contours. When physiological melanosis compromises the aesthetics of smiling, it may induce insecurity in patients, who usually seek out alternatives for reducing or eliminating hyperpigmentation. We present a case report of a surgical procedure combining gingivectomy with gingivoplasty for the management of physiological melanosis. The surgical procedure was performed on a 40-year-old female patient with bilateral pigmentation in both arches. The results of the histological analysis confirm the diagnoses of melanotic macula, with papillary hyperplasia and cytopathic changes being suggestive of HPV infection, which was verified using an immunohistochemistry analysis based on the detection of a major capsid protein of HPV. Acceptable functional and aesthetic results were obtained for the patient without major discomfort during the postoperative period. In cases when HPV infection is present, long-term follow-up becomes necessary.

BACKGROUND: During the prolonged period from Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection to cervical cancer development, Low-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (LSIL) stage provides a critical opportunity for cervical cancer prevention, giving the high potential for reversal in this stage. However, there is few research and a lack of clear guidelines on appropriate intervention strategies at this stage, underscoring the need for real-time prognostic predictions and personalized treatments to promote lesion reversal. METHODS: We have established a prospective cohort. Since 2018, we have been collecting clinical data and pathological images of HPV-infected patients, followed by tracking the progression of their cervical lesions. In constructing our predictive models, we applied logistic regression and six machine learning models, evaluating each model's predictive performance using metrics such as the Area Under the Curve (AUC). We also employed the SHAP method for interpretative analysis of the prediction results. Additionally, the model identifies key factors influencing the progression of the lesions. RESULTS: Model comparisons highlighted the superior performance of Random Forests (RF) and Support Vector Machines (SVM), both in clinical parameter and pathological image-based predictions. Notably, the RF model, which integrates pathological images and clinical multi-parameters, achieved the highest AUC of 0.866. Another significant finding was the substantial impact of sleep quality on the spontaneous clearance of HPV and regression of LSIL. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to current cervical cancer prediction models, our model's prognostic capabilities extend to the spontaneous regression stage of cervical cancer. This model aids clinicians in real-time monitoring of lesions and in developing personalized treatment or follow-up plans by assessing individual risk factors, thus fostering lesion spontaneous reversal and aiding in cervical cancer prevention and reduction.

INTRODUCTION: The lifetime prevalence of human papillomavirus infection (HPV) is estimated to be around 80% and it is the most common sexually transmitted infection. Despite being well known for its oncologic relevance, it has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, though available evidence is contradicting. Previous meta-analyses involved articles which based HPV infection on Pap smear results, leading to a significant source of bias. Therefore, we aimed to assess the burden of genetically proven HPV infection on adverse pregnancy outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In our meta-analysis, pregnant women tested for HPV DNA were only considered eligible. We conducted a systematic search in three major databases (PubMed, Embase, and CENTRAL) on September 22, 2023. Cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies were eligible for the analysis. The exposed group consisted of HPV-infected patients. We assessed the odds ratios (OR) with a confidence interval (CI) of 95%. In order to reduce the heterogeneity, we performed subgroup analyses based on different strains (high risk HPV, HPV 16/18, study design). The study was prospectively registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022370228). RESULTS: Our study involved 14 articles with 7008 women. A significant association was found between preterm delivery and HPV infection (OR: 1.94, CI: 1.31-2.87). No significant association was found when separately examining high-risk HPV-infected women (OR: 1.94, CI: 0.82-4.59), and HPV 16 or 18-infected women (OR: 2.08, CI: 0.50-8.63) in terms of preterm delivery. No significant association was found between spontaneous abortion and HPV infection (OR: 1.02, CI: 0.16-6.31). CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis indicates an association between HPV infection and preterm delivery. It is imperative that future studies consider confounding variables more comprehensively. Additionally, the global implementation of HPV vaccination programs holds significance not only in oncology but also in obstetrics.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) represents a significant global health challenge, with squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) accounting for approximately 90% of all HNC cases. These malignancies, collectively referred to as head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), originate from the mucosal epithelium lining the larynx, pharynx, and oral cavity. The primary risk factors associated with HNSCC in economically disadvantaged nations have been chronic alcohol consumption and tobacco use. However, in more affluent countries, the landscape of HNSCC has shifted with the identification of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, particularly HPV-16, as a major risk factor, especially among nonsmokers. Understanding the evolving risk factors and the distinct biological behaviors of HPV-positive and HPV-negative HNSCC is critical for developing targeted treatment strategies and improving patient outcomes in this complex and diverse group of cancers. Accurate diagnosis of HPV-positive HNSCC is essential for developing a comprehensive model that integrates the molecular characteristics, immune microenvironment, and clinical outcomes. The aim of this comprehensive review was to summarize the current knowledge and advances in the identification of DNA, RNA, and protein biomarkers in bodily fluids and tissues that have introduced new possibilities for minimally or non-invasive cancer diagnosis, monitoring, and assessment of therapeutic responses.

AIM: To review the status of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in Japan from inception to the present, focusing on past and current challenges. METHODS: Published articles and website content related to HPV vaccination were reviewed. RESULTS: The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare suspended proactive recommendations for HPV vaccination in June 2013 following repeated media reports of girls experiencing adverse events, including chronic pain and walking disturbances, after receiving the HPV vaccine. Despite later recognition of these symptoms as a functional somatic syndrome, HPV vaccine coverage of target girls aged 12 to 16 years in the National Immunization Program (NIP) rapidly decreased to near zero. This suspension of the proactive HPV vaccination recommendation ceased in fiscal year (f-year) 2022, initiating a 3-year catch-up free HPV vaccination period from April 2022 to March 2025 for women born from f-years 1997 to 2005. These drastic changes were driven by established evidence of the effectiveness and safety of HPV vaccines reported from both Japan and other countries, and a nine-valent HPV vaccine has been included in the NIP since f-year 2023. However, the estimated HPV vaccination rate in the NIP remains low at ≤30%. CONCLUSIONS: To regain high coverage of HPV vaccination in Japan, it is essential that government, industry, and academic society work together to raise awareness and educate Japanese people about cervical cancer prevention and HPV-related diseases.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the association of body mass index (BMI) with anal high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) and biopsy-confirmed histologic anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) among a clinic-based sample of Hispanics in Puerto Rico. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated medical records of adults who received services at the Anal Neoplasia Clinic of the University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center between October 2014 and December 2022. The study included 543 records with complete clinical information regarding anal HR-HPV and anal HSIL status. Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: Mean age of participants was 44.10 ± 13.24 years, 65.2% were men, 71.7% were HIV-infected, 74.4% had anal HR-HPV infection, and 37.9% had biopsy-confirmed HSIL. Regarding BMI, 2.4% were underweight, 31.9% normal weight, and 39.0 % overweight; while 17.3 % had class I, 5.2% class II, and 4.2% class III obesity. No significant association was observed between BMI and anal HR-HPV infection in adjusted analyses. Lower odds of anal HSIL were observed among overweight individuals (OR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.41 - 0.99) and those with class II/III obesity (OR: 0.48, 95% CI: 0.22 - 1.01) compared to adults with underweight/normal BMI, after adjusting for potential confounders. No significant association was observed for class I obesity. Conclusion: BMI was not associated with anal HR-HPV infection. Overweight and obese individuals had lower odds of having anal HSIL than adults with underweight/normal BMI. This finding could suggest underdiagnosis of HSIL among overweight/obese individuals, or reduced risk in this group.

Regions that have achieved a high rate of vaccination coverage are witnessing a transformative impact on public health, with a notable reduction of up to 30% in the incidence of cervical cancer cases. Emphasizing the broader impact of vaccination on public health, this review investigates the role of a school-entry mandate for the HPV vaccine, aiming to inform decisions about its potential benefits and challenges. With a focus on understanding the significance of vaccination, the review delves into its potential to reduce the physical, emotional, and financial burdens associated with HPV-associated cancers. Implementing school-entry mandates for the HPV vaccine offers benefits such as increased vaccination rates, protection against HPV-related diseases, and long-term health advantages. However, challenges include ethical concerns, parental opposition, and logistical issues. Successful implementation requires clear communication, collaboration, and education, with legal and ethical considerations addressing constitutional rights, liability concerns, autonomy, and equitable access. In summary, the implementation of school-entry mandates for the HPV vaccine offers the potential for increased vaccination rates and the reduction of health disparities. However, this approach is challenged by factors such as opposition, associated costs, and legal and ethical considerations. The decision to mandate the HPV vaccine requires a delicate balance between public health priorities and individual rights, necessitating clear communication, education, and collaborative efforts to address the complexities involved.

Oral HPV infection is the main risk factor for the development of oropharyngeal carcinoma. Men who have sex with men (MSM), especially if living with HIV (PLWH), are at increased risk of infection and consequently of cancer development. Aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of nonavalent vaccine on oral HPV infection in a cohort of MSM and transgender women (TGW). This prospective study included all MSM and TGW who started nonavalent HPV vaccination from May 2019 to September 2021. Oral rinse was collected before each vaccine administration and after six months of follow up. Descriptive statistics were used. Kaplan Meier probability curves and Cox regression models for HPV acquisition and clearance were calculated. The analysis included 211 individuals (202 MSM and 9 TGW). PLWH were 138 (65.4%). Baseline oral rinse was positive in 30 subjects (14.2%). Positivity rate did not change over time (p = 0.742), even when restricting the analysis only to high-risk genotypes (p = 0.575) and to genotypes covered by vaccine (p = 0.894). The risk to acquire HPV infection was 12.8% at one year and 33.4% at two years after vaccination. The probability to clear the infection was 67.6% at one year and 87.9% at two years. HIV infection had no impact on vaccine efficacy. Age above 45 years was the only factor associated to HPV acquisition (aHR 4.06, 95% CI 1.03-15.98, p = 0.045). Prevalence of oral HPV infection was higher in PLWH, but HIV had no impact on viral clearance or acquisition after vaccination.

Since the patients suffering from female lower genital tract diseases are getting younger and younger and the human papilloma virus (HPV) infection is becoming more widespread, the novel non-invasive precise modalities of diagnosis and therapy are required to remain structures of the organ and tissue, and fertility as well, by which the less damage to normal tissue and fewer adverse effects are able to be achieved. In all nucleated mammalian cells, 5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is an amino acid that occurs spontaneously, which further synthesizes in the heme biosynthetic pathway into protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) as a porphyrin precursor and photosensitizing agent. Exogenous 5-ALA avoids the rate-limiting step in the process, causing PpIX buildup in tumor tissues. This tumor-selective PpIX distribution after 5-ALA application has been used successfully for tumor photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Several ALA-based drugs have been used for ALA-PDD and ALA-PDT in treating many (pre)cancerous diseases, including the female lower genital tract diseases, yet the ALA-induced fluorescent theranostics is needed to be explored further. In this paper, we are going to review the studies of the mechanisms and applications mainly on ALA-mediated photodynamic reactions and its effectiveness in treating female lower genital tract diseases.

Lacking of adequate knowledge is an obstacle to effective prevention of cervical cancer, yet factors that affect the information acquisition and seeking behavior as well as the information communication process are not well studied. We assessed information acquisition and seeking behavior, as well as perceived barriers of doctor-patient communication regarding human papilloma virus (HPV)-related information of infected women. Among 437 participants, 405 (93%) expressed demands for HPV-related information, while only a small proportion (100/437, 22.9%) actively sought information and felt obstacles comprehending. Web-based channels were most frequently utilized and medical personnel were the most trusted information source. Patients' satisfaction was significantly correlated with doctor's patience (r = 0.581, p < 0.001) and emotional caring (r = 0.555, p < 0.001). Compared to patients not actively seeking information, those actively seeking information were more likely to be single (p = 0.005), had higher education (p = 0.009) and monthly individual-level income (p = 0.023), and was more likely to undergo regular cervical cancer screening (p = 0.003), and were already or willing to be vaccinated (p = 0.008). The actively seeking information group also achieved higher scores in HPV knowledge test (p = 0.007). Public health interventions targeting HPV-infected women using specifically designed educational materials may influence information seeking behavior, increase HPV literacy and knowledge, which could potentially increase HPV vaccine uptake and cervical cancer screening rate.

Objectives To evaluate the knowledge and awareness about cervical cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination among medical undergraduates at Northern Border University. Methods It was a cross-sectional study done on students selected conveniently from the College of Medicine, Northern Border University, Arar. The data were collected regarding knowledge about HPV infection and vaccine awareness using a validated questionnaire. Results A total of 200 students responded to the questionnaires, with 104 (52%) being male students and 120 (60%) being clinical years of MBBS. The mean knowledge score was 17.12 ± 2.73 out of 24, which was labeled as moderate knowledge about cervical cancer and HPV. Almost two-thirds of the students responded correctly to the etiology and risk factors of cervical cancer, while only half of the students knew the correct screening intervals for cervical cancer. The awareness of students about the HPV vaccine was deficient, and the mean score was estimated to be 4.20 ± 0.79 out of nine. Female students and students in clinical years showed significantly better understanding and awareness about cervical cancer and its vaccine and showed greater vaccine acceptability as compared to male students and students in preclinical years. Conclusion The present study shows moderate knowledge about cervical cancer but deficient awareness of medical students about the HPV vaccine. However, the students were willing to get educated about cervical cancer and its vaccine and showed a favorable opinion towards vaccinating the schoolgirls and educating their patients as future physicians. The information can be considered a benchmark on knowledge and awareness levels and can be utilized to modify medical curricula and develop efficient awareness programs.

Background: Cervical cancer, one of the prevalent malignancies among females, is closely associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Homologous to the E6-AP carboxyl terminus (HECT) domain and ankyrin repeat containing E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase 1 (HACE1) plays pivotal roles in various cancers. This study aimed to elucidate the expression of HACE1 in cervical cancer and its correlation with clinical features. Methods: From The Cancer Genome Atlas Cervical Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Endocervical Adenocarcinoma (TCGA-CESC) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO, GSE6791) datasets, we obtained RNA-Seq profiles and associated clinical information. Differential gene analysis was conducted using the R "limma" package. Implications for HPV infection and the overall survival (OS) of cervical cancer were determined by performing differential expression analysis and the Cox proportional hazards regression model. Immunohistochemical analyses were used to validate the expression in cervical cancer and normal cervical tissue. Further, nomogram was constructed to predict OS in cervical cancer. Whether the model was credible was evaluated according to receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and concordance curves. To further evaluate the potential functions of HACE1, we conducted functional enrichment analysis. Finally, we assessed methylation levels in HPV+ and HPV- patients in the TCGA-CESC dataset. Results: Utilizing TCGA and GSE6791 datasets, we observed significant upregulation of HACE1 in cervical cancer patients, particularly linked to HPV infection. Immunohistochemical staining revealed enhanced HACE1 expression in tumor tissues. Further analysis demonstrated a significant positive correlation between elevated HACE1 and HPV-associated proteins (E1, E6, and E7). Moreover, high HACE1 expression was associated with adverse prognosis in cervical cancer patients. Multivariate Cox analysis indicated that HACE1 could serve as an independent prognostic factor. We developed a prognostic model integrating HPV subtypes, the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging, and HACE1, exhibiting strong predictive efficacy for cervical cancer prognosis. Gene enrichment analysis indicated HACE1's potential involvement in multiple signaling pathways during cervical cancer progression, while the demethylation of cg03002526 in HPV-positive patients might contribute to HACE1 upregulation. Conclusions: Our study reveals that HACE1 upregulation is associated with cervical cancer, particularly in HPV-positive patients. HACE1 emerges as an independent prognostic factor, linked to unfavorable outcomes.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection, affecting both men and women globally. Men and women are at risk of type HPV16 and HPV18 viruses leading to cervical, anal, vulvar, and oropharyngeal cancers. The HPV vaccines are highly effective in preventing various strains of HPV infection, and effective vaccines are available only in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Hence, this systematic review explored knowledge and attitudes toward HPV infection and HPV vaccination and factors influencing HPV vaccination uptake among the MENA populations. Various databases, such as Medline, Science Direct, CINHAL, EBSCO, PsycINFO, and PubMed, were systematically searched to include English studies assessing knowledge, attitudes toward HPV infection, and factors influencing HPV vaccination acceptance in the MENA region. Twenty-two papers met the inclusion criteria. The number of participants ranged from 99 to 7223. While knowledge, attitude, and vaccine hesitancy association factors were generally reported in cross-sectional studies, the HPV vaccine acceptancy over time from longitudinal studies was mixed and inconclusive due to inadequate information on HPV infection and vaccination, the cost of the vaccine, cultural beliefs, and safety concerns. Results demonstrated that low HPV vaccine acceptance is due to a lack of HPV understanding among the MENA population, coupled with access issues. Factors such as awareness, confidence in vaccination, and involvement in decision-making positively influence vaccine uptake. Therefore, tailored programs addressing vaccine hesitancy in the MENA communities are necessary.

The menace of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections among low- and middle-income countries with no access to a free HPV vaccine is a public health concern. HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Nigeria, while the most known types of HPV genotypes being transmitted are the high-risk HPV-16 and 18 genotypes. In this study, we explored the predictors of self-reported HPV infections and HPV genital warts infection among a population of students, non-academic staff, and academic staff of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) University located in Lapai, Nigeria. We also assessed their knowledge about HPV infections and genotypes, and sexual behaviors. An online cross-sectional study was conducted by setting up a structured questionnaire on Google Forms and it was distributed to the university community via Facebook and other social media platforms of the university. The form captured questions on HPV infection, and knowledge about HPV infection and genotypes, as well as the sexual health of the participants. All variables were described using frequencies and percentage distribution; chi-squared test statistics were used to explore the association between HPV infection (medical records of HPV infection) and the participants' profile, and a logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the factors associated with HPV genital warts infection among the population. This study reveals those participants between the ages of 26-40 years (81.3%) and those currently not in a sexually active relationship-single/divorced (26.4%)-who have self-reported having the HPV-16 and -18 genotypes. Moreover, participants between 26-40 years of age (OR: 0.45, 95%CI: 0.22-0.89) reported themselves to be carriers of HPV genital warts. Therefore, this study reveals the factors associated with HPV infection and genital warts peculiar to IBB university students and staff. Hence, we suggest the need for HPV awareness programs and free HPV vaccine availability at IBB university.

OBJECTIVE: The vaginal flora has been reported to be associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the cervical microbiota in patients with HPV infection and to analyse the changes in the vaginal flora and enzyme profiles in females with HPV infection. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 206 participants who underwent HPV genotyping, sexually transmitted diseases pathogen testing, cytology examination, and microbiome analysis. Additionally, we collected 115 HPV-negative samples and 48 HPV-positive samples for 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. The vaginal microbial communities of both groups were analysed for diversity and differences to explore their association with HPV infection. RESULTS: The abundance of Lactobacillus was found to be reduced, while Gardnerella vaginalis was significantly more prevalent in the HPV + group. In terms of alpha diversity indices, the Shannon index (P = .0036) and Simpson index (P = .02) were higher in the HPV + group compared to the HPV - group, indicating greater community diversity in the HPV + group. Among the 10 sexually transmitted diseases pathogens analysed, Uup3 and Uup6 were significantly associated with HPV infection. Statistically significant differences were observed in Nugent scores and bacterial vaginosis between the two groups (P < .05). In functional analysis, 11 proteins and 13 enzymes were found to be significantly altered in the HPV + group. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that disruptions in the vaginal flora are associated with HPV infection. Reduced levels of Lactobacillus, increased prevalence of Gardnerella, and abnormal enzyme profiles are closely linked to HPV infection.

BACKGROUND: Prevention of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infection and effective medical intervention of persistent HPV infection and precancerous lesions are critical for the prevention of cervical cancer. AIMS: The aim of this retrospective comparative study was to evaluate the outcomes of ALA PDT and observation only in the management of low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL). METHODS: In PDT Group (n = 138), ALA PDT was applied to patients with colposcopic biopsy confirmed cervical LSIL accompanied with HR-HPV infection longer than 1 year or HPV 16/18 subtype infection. Cervical LSIL only patients received 3 times of ALA PDT and those with concurrent cervical canal or vaginal lesions received 6 times ALA PDT. Control Group (n = 69) received observation only. Colposcopy, TCT and HPV typing were performed before and after treatment. Patients were followed up for up to two years. RESULT: The observation group showed 26.1%, 34.8% and 53.6% HR-HPV negative conversion at 3-6, 12 and 24 months, respectively. LSIL regression rate of the observation group was 33.33%, 36.23% and 65.22% at 3-6, 12 and 24 months, respectively. There was 62.32%, 80.56% and 89.22% patients achieved HPV clearance at 3-6, 12 and 24 months after PDT treatment, respectively. The LSIL remission rate was 89.86%, 94.40% and 96.08% at 3-6, 12 and 24 months after ALA PDT, respectively. The abnormal TCT (≧ ASCUS) was reduced from 92% to 10.1%, 4.6% and 3.9% at 3-6, 12 and 24 months after ALA PDT, respectively. The patient age was not a factor affecting the clearance of HPV infection and the LSIL regression rate of PDT treatment. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that the application of multiple ALA PDT treatments has added value in achieving both short-term and long-term HPV and lesion clearance.
