RESUMO

COVID-19 pandemic brought chemosensory impairment to the forefront of medicine, revealing gaps in the knowledge of pathophysiological mechanisms, true prevalence and preventive/therapeutic alternatives. This is a sub-study of the ORCHESTRA cohort focusing on post-COVID-19 chemosensory symptoms. Risk factors for neurosensorial cluster of post-COVID-19 syndrome (NSc-PCS) were assessed through multivariable analysis. Psychophysical validated tests were applied on a sub-population of 50 patients. Qualitative chemosensory symptoms as well as nasal and oral chemesthesis were evaluated through anamnestic interview and the quality of life through the SF-36 questionnaire. Chemosensory symptoms evolution and olfactory training's outcome were assessed through phone-call interviews. Out of 1187 patients (female, N = 630), 550 (47%) presented NSc-PCS, with a lower risk for older age and monoclonal antibodies treatment, and a higher risk in females (p < 0.001). Out of the 50 patients evaluated with psychophysical tests, 66% showed smell reduction with a qualitative alteration in 50% of hyposmic and 35% of normosmic patients. Hypogeusia was present in 14 (28%) of the patients assessed, with 56% showing a qualitative alteration; 53% of normogeusic patients presented qualitative disorders. NSc-PCS has a complex, fluctuating, multifaceted presentation. Quantifying and characterizing COVID-19-related chemosensory impairment is key to understand underlying mechanisms and to develop preventive and therapeutic treatment.

BACKGROUND: The long-term symptomatology of COVID-19 has yet to be comprehensively described. The aim of the study was to describe persistent COVID-19 symptoms in a cohort of hospitalized and home-isolated patients. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on long COVID patients. Long COVID symptoms were identified, and patients were divided into hospitalized (in-patients) and home-isolated (out-patients), as well as according to the number of symptoms. Patients were examined by a multidisciplinary medical team. Blood tests, high resolution chest computed tomography (CT), and physical and infectious examinations were performed. Finally, in-patients were evaluated at 2 time-points: on hospital admission (T0) and 3 months after discharge (Tpost). RESULTS: There were 364 COVID-19 patients enrolled; 82% of patients reported one or more symptoms. The most reported symptom was fatigue. Chest CT showed alteration in 76% of patients, and pulmonary function alterations were observed in 44.7% of patients. A higher risk of presenting at least one symptom was seen in patients treated with corticosteroid, and a higher risk of presenting chest CT residual lesion was observed in hospitalized patients and in patients that received hydroxychloroquine treatment. Moreover, a higher risk of altered pulmonary function was observed in older patients. CONCLUSION: Long-term sequelae are present in a remarkable number of long COVID patients and pose a new challenge to the health care system to identify long-lasting effects and improve patients' well-being. Multidisciplinary teams are crucial to develop preventive measures, and clinical management strategies.

Acute pulmonary embolism (APE) is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular emergencies and the third leading cause of death. Although efforts focus on treating the acute event, patients who survive APE may develop long-term sequelae. Research reveals that approximately half of patients who have suffered an APE do not regain their previous level of function and experience a reduction in their quality of life for several years after the episode. Acute pulmonary embolism can be classified according to the risk of short-term mortality, with most mortality and morbidity concentrated in high-risk and intermediate-risk cases. The first-line treatment for APE is systemic anticoagulation. However, identifying and more aggressively treating people with intermediate to high risk, who have a more favorable risk profile for reperfusion treatments, could reduce short-term mortality and mitigate post-pulmonary embolism syndrome (PPES). Post-pulmonary embolism syndrome refers to a variety of persistent symptoms and functional limitations that occur after an APE. The presence of persistent dyspnea, functional limitations, and/or decreased quality of life after an APE has been recently termed "PPES," although this entity encompasses different manifestations. The most severe cause of persistent dyspnea is chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, where increased pulmonary artery pressure is due to the fibrotic organization of unresolved APE. Post-PE Syndrome is not always systematically addressed in management guidelines, and its prevalence may be underestimated. More research is needed to fully understand its causes and risk factors. Interventions such as cardiopulmonary rehabilitation have been suggested to improve the quality of life of patients with PPES. A comprehensive, evidence-based approach is essential to effectively prevent and manage PPES and improve the long-term outcomes and well-being of affected patients.

Recent studies elucidate that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients may face a higher risk of cardiovascular complications. This study aimed to evaluate association of COVID-19 with the risk of pulmonary embolism (PE) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study included Korean adult citizens between January 2021 and March 2022 from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency COVID-19 National Health Insurance Service cohort. The Fine and Gray's regression with all-cause death as a competing event was adopted to evaluate PE and DVT risks after COVID-19. This study included a total of 1,601,835 COVID-19 patients and 14,011,285 matched individuals without COVID-19. The risk of PE (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 6.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.67-10.66; p < 0.001) and DVT (aHR, 3.05; 95% CI, 1.75-5.29; p < 0.001) was higher in COVID-19 group in individuals without complete COVID-19 vaccination. In addition, individuals with complete COVID-19 vaccination still had a higher risk of COVID-19-related PE (aHR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.15-1.88; p < 0.001). However, COVID-19 was not a significant risk factor for DVT among those with complete COVID-19 vaccination. COVID-19 was identified as an independent factor that elevated PE and DVT risks, especially for individuals without complete COVID-19 vaccination.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated executive functions (EFs) in young adult survivors of childhood bacterial meningitis (BM). These skills are important for normal development, and their potential vulnerability in early years suggests that childhood BM could affect executive functions in the longer term. METHOD: The adult self-report Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function was administered to 474 young adult survivors of childhood BM who participated in the 20|30 Dutch Postmeningitis study. Average scores were compared to population-norm group scores. Subgroup scores were compared according to causative pathogen and age at onset. RESULTS: Young adult survivors of childhood BM scored lower on overall metacognition than the age-matched population norm group. Young adult survivors of childhood BM caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. agalactiae, or Escherichia coli had lower scores than cases caused by Neisseria meningitidis. Survivors with age-at-onset below 12 months had a higher (worse) overall EF score than survivors with age-at-onset above 12 months. CONCLUSIONS: Young adult survivors of childhood BM experience difficulties in EF. However, most of the self-reported EF scores were within the norm. Future studies need to additionally assess EF in adult survivors of childhood BM using performance-based tests.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy, which manifests in severe cognitive and depressive symptoms, is directly linked to neuroinflammation. Our study investigates the efficacy of 25H-NBOMe, a phenethylamine, in alleviating these symptoms, potentially offering an innovative treatment for post-sepsis depression. Wistar rats, weighing between 250-300 g, were subjected to cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) surgery to induce sepsis. Depressive-like behaviors were assessed using the forced swim test (FST) on either day 7 or 14 post-surgery, to establish the presence of depressive symptoms. The impact of 25H-NBOMe treatment was then evaluated, focusing on the head-twitch response (HTR), performance in the FST, and GFAP expression in the prefrontal cortex. Treatment with 25H-NBOMe resulted in significant behavioral changes, demonstrated by decreased immobility and increased swimming times in the FST, along with a rise in the HTR. These outcomes indicate a reduction in depressive-like symptoms post-sepsis and the psychoactive effects of the compound. Furthermore, a notable decrease in GFAP expression in the study highlights the compound's impact on mitigating sepsis-induced astrogliosis. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of 25H-NBOMe, a psychedelic in the phenethylamine class, in treating post-sepsis depression and reducing astrogliosis. However, the psychedelic nature of 25H-NBOMe calls for further investigation into similar compounds with less psychoactive impact, crucial for advancing treatment options for neuropsychiatric symptoms following sepsis.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and being small for gestational age (SGA) are two distinct conditions with different implications for short- and long-term child development. SGA is present if the estimated fetal or birth weight is below the tenth percentile. IUGR can be identified by additional abnormalities (pathological Doppler sonography, oligohydramnion, lack of growth in the interval, estimated weight below the third percentile) and can also be present in fetuses and neonates with weights above the tenth percentile. There is a need to differentiate between IUGR and SGA whenever possible, as IUGR in particular is associated with greater perinatal morbidity, prematurity and mortality, as well as an increased risk for diseases in later life. Recognizing fetuses and newborns being "at risk" in order to monitor them accordingly and deliver them in good time, as well as to provide adequate follow up care to ameliorate adverse sequelae is still challenging. This review article discusses approaches to differentiate IUGR from SGA and further increase diagnostic accuracy. Since adverse prenatal influences increase but individually optimized further child development decreases the risk of later diseases, we also discuss the need for interdisciplinary follow-up strategies during childhood. Moreover, we present current concepts of pathophysiology, with a focus on oxidative stress and consecutive inflammatory and metabolic changes as key molecular mechanisms of adverse sequelae, and look at future scientific opportunities and challenges. Most importantly, awareness needs to be raised that pre- and postnatal care of IUGR neonates should be regarded as a continuum.

There is considerable interest in cognitive and behavioural interventions to manage and improve neurocognitive (dys)functions in childhood cancer survivors and the literature is rapidly growing. This systematic review aimed to examine the literature of such interventions and their impact on executive functions (EFs) and attention. A search of relevant manuscripts was performed in PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science in March 2023 in accordance with the PRISMA statement. After screening 3737 records, 17 unique studies published between 2002 and 2022 were charted and summarized. Participants (N = 718) were mostly children (M = 12.2 years), who were long-term survivors (M = 5.0 years post treatment) of brain or CNS tumours (48%). Identified interventions included computerized cognitive training, physical activity, and cognitive interventions with compensatory strategy training. The highest quality RCT studies included computerized training (i.e., Cogmed), neurofeedback, and exergaming. Evidence suggests that Cogmed may improve the performance of certain working memory tasks (near transfer) and possibly improve visual attention tasks for individuals with working memory impairments. However, the evidence did not support far transfer of effects to real life. No significant effects (near or far-transfer) were found following neurofeedback and exergaming interventions. Finally, a knowledge gap was identified for interventions directed at long-term survivors in adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) caused by Neisseria meningitidis is a rapidly progressing, rare disease that often presents as meningitis or sepsis. It mostly affects infants and adolescents, with high fatality rates or long-term sequelae. In the Netherlands, serogroup B (MenB) is most prevalent. We aimed to estimate the economic burden of MenB-related IMD between 2015 and 2019, including direct and indirect medical costs from short- and long-term sequelae, from a societal perspective. METHODS: IMD incidence was based on laboratory-based case numbers from the Netherlands Reference Laboratory for Bacterial Meningitis (Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam, the Netherlands); there were 74 MenB cases on average per year in the study period 2015-2019. Case-fatality rate (3.8%) and percentage of patients discharged with sequelae (46%) were derived from literature. Direct costs included treatment costs of the acute phase, long-term sequelae, and public health response. Indirect costs were calculated using the human capital (HCA) and friction costs (FCA) approaches, in which productivity losses were estimated for patients and parents during the acute and sequelae phases. Costs were discounted by 4% yearly. RESULTS: Estimated costs due to MenB IMD in an annual cohort were €3,094,199 with FCA and €9,480,764 with HCA. Direct costs amounted to €2,974,996, of which 75.2% were related to sequelae. Indirect costs related to sequelae were €52,532 with FCA and €5,220,398 with HCA. CONCLUSION: Our analysis reflects the high economic burden of MenB-related IMD in the Netherlands. Sequelae costs represent a high proportion of the total costs. Societal costs were dependent on the applied approach (FCA or HCA).

BACKGROUND: Our aims were to describe respiratory sequelae up to 12 months after discharge in COVID-19 patients with severe pneumonia requiring non-invasive respiratory support therapies. METHODS: This study was undertaken at University Hospital Doctor Josep Trueta (Girona, Spain) between March 2020 and June 2020. Three months after discharge, we evaluated their dyspnoea and performed Saint George's respiratory questionnaire, pulmonary function tests, blood test, 6-min walking test, and a high-resolution CT (HRCT). At the six and 12-month follow-up, we repeated all tests except for pulmonary function, 6-min walking test, and HRCT, which were performed only if abnormal findings had been previously detected. RESULTS: Out of the 94 patients recruited, 73% were male, the median age was 62.9 years old, and most were non-smokers (58%). When comparing data three and 12 months after discharge, the percentage of patients presenting dyspnoea ≥ 2 decreased (19% vs 7%), the quality-of-life total score improved (22.8% vs 18.9%; p = 0.019), there were less abnormal results in the pulmonary function tests (47% vs 23%), the 6-min walking test distance was enhanced (368.3 m vs 390.7 m, p = 0.020), ground glass opacities findings waned (51.6% vs 11.5%), and traction bronchiectasis increased (5.6% vs 15.9%). Only age showed significant differences between patients with and without pulmonary fibrotic-like changes. CONCLUSION: Most patients improved their clinical condition, pulmonary function, exercise capacity and quality of life one year after discharge. Nonetheless, pulmonary fibrotic-like changes were observed during the follow-ups.

BACKGROUND: Immense attention has been given to the outcome of COVID-19 infection. However, comprehensive studies based on large populational cohort with long-term follow-up are still lacking. This study aimed to investigate the risk of various short-term comorbidities (within one month) and long-term sequelae (above one month) after COVID-19 infection. METHODS: In this large prospective cohort study with 14 months follow-up information based on UK biobank, we included 16,776 COVID-19-positive participants and 58,281 COVID-19-negative participants matched for comparison. The risk of each comorbidity and sequela was evaluated by multivariable logistic regression analysis and presented as hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). RESULTS: COVID-19-positive individuals had a higher risk of 47 types of comorbidities within one month following COVID-19 infection, especially those who were older, male, overweight/obese, ever-smoked, with more pre-existing comorbidities and hospitalized. About 70.37% of COVID-19 patients with comorbidities had more than one co-occurring comorbidities. Additionally, only 6 high-risk sequelae were observed after one month of COVID-19 infection, and the incidence was relatively low (< 1%). CONCLUSION: In addition to long-term sequelae following COVID-19 infection, plenty of comorbidities were observed, especially in patients with older age, male gender, overweight/obese, more pre-existing comorbidities and severe COVID-19, indicating that more attention should be given to these susceptible persons within this period.

Background: Lack of specific definitions of clinical characteristics, disease severity, and risk and preventive factors of post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) severely impacts research and discovery of new preventive and therapeutics drugs. Methods: This prospective multicenter cohort study was conducted from February 2020 to June 2022 in 5 countries, enrolling SARS-CoV-2 out- and in-patients followed at 3-, 6-, and 12-month from diagnosis, with assessment of clinical and biochemical features, antibody (Ab) response, Variant of Concern (VoC), and physical and mental quality of life (QoL). Outcome of interest was identification of risk and protective factors of PCS by clinical phenotype, setting, severity of disease, treatment, and vaccination status. We used SF-36 questionnaire to assess evolution in QoL index during follow-up and unsupervised machine learning algorithms (principal component analysis, PCA) to explore symptom clusters. Severity of PCS was defined by clinical phenotype and QoL. We also used generalized linear models to analyse the impact of PCS on QoL and associated risk and preventive factors. CT registration number: NCT05097677. Findings: Among 1796 patients enrolled, 1030 (57%) suffered from at least one symptom at 12-month. PCA identified 4 clinical phenotypes: chronic fatigue-like syndrome (CFs: fatigue, headache and memory loss, 757 patients, 42%), respiratory syndrome (REs: cough and dyspnoea, 502, 23%); chronic pain syndrome (CPs: arthralgia and myalgia, 399, 22%); and neurosensorial syndrome (NSs: alteration in taste and smell, 197, 11%). Determinants of clinical phenotypes were different (all comparisons p < 0.05): being female increased risk of CPs, NSs, and CFs; chronic pulmonary diseases of REs; neurological symptoms at SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis of REs, NSs, and CFs; oxygen therapy of CFs and REs; and gastrointestinal symptoms at SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis of CFs. Early treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection with monoclonal Ab (all clinical phenotypes), corticosteroids therapy for mild/severe cases (NSs), and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination (CPs) were less likely to be associated to PCS (all comparisons p < 0.05). Highest reduction in QoL was detected in REs and CPs (43.57 and 43.86 vs 57.32 in PCS-negative controls, p < 0.001). Female sex (p < 0.001), gastrointestinal symptoms (p = 0.034) and renal complications (p = 0.002) during the acute infection were likely to increase risk of severe PCS (QoL <50). Vaccination and early treatment with monoclonal Ab reduced the risk of severe PCS (p = 0.01 and p = 0.03, respectively). Interpretation: Our study provides new evidence suggesting that PCS can be classified by clinical phenotypes with different impact on QoL, underlying possible different pathogenic mechanisms. We identified factors associated to each clinical phenotype and to severe PCS. These results might help in designing pathogenesis studies and in selecting high-risk patients for inclusion in therapeutic and management clinical trials. RESUMO

These S1 guidelines are an updated and expanded version of the S1 guidelines on long COVID differential diagnostic and management strategies. They summarize the state of knowledge on postviral conditions like long/post COVID at the time of writing. Due to the dynamic nature of knowledge development, they are intended to be "living guidelines". The focus is on practical applicability at the level of primary care, which is understood to be the appropriate place for initial access and for primary care and treatment. The guidelines provide recommendations on the course of treatment, differential diagnostics of the most common symptoms that can result from infections like with SARS-CoV-2, treatment options, patient management and care, reintegration and rehabilitation. The guidelines have been developed through an interdisciplinary and interprofessional process and provide recommendations on interfaces and possibilities for collaboration.

Introduction Pregnancy is an altered immunological state and not necessarily an immune-compromised state. These immune changes subject pregnant women to increased susceptibility to infection. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, pregnant women were more susceptible to serious illness for reasons other than their immune response. The purpose of this study was to compare the feto-maternal outcome (morbidity and mortality) in relation to pre-existing maternal co-morbidities, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection-related disease severity, and its impact on the mode of delivery and long-term sequelae in pregnant women in the first and second waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods This was a hospital-based comparative study carried out on 101 pregnant patients during the first wave (April 2020 to December 2020) and 22 patients in the second wave (March 2021 to July 2021) of the COVID-19 pandemic, in Rajashri Dashrath Autonomous State Medical College, Ayodhya, India. All pregnant women with COVID-19 in the first and second waves were included. Non-pregnant patients with COVID-19 infection, pregnant patients lost to follow-up, pregnant patients without COVID-19 infection, and patients in the puerperal period were excluded. Results Seventy-three (72.27%) patients in the first wave and 12 (54.54%) in the second wave were asymptomatic. Those with mild disease numbered 20 (25.74%) in the first wave and six (27.27%) in the second wave. Disease severity was more in the second wave, that is four (18.18%) as compared to one (0.99%) in the first wave. Severe anemia was the most common co-morbidity associated with both first (n=4, 3.96%) and second (n=5, 22.72%) waves. Four (6.45%) spontaneous abortions occurred in the first wave as compared to three (20%) in the second wave. Intensive care unit (ICU) admission was more in the second wave (n=4, 26.66%) as compared to the first wave (n=1, 1.61%). Two (13.33%) maternal deaths occurred in the second wave and none in the first wave. Cesarean sections in both the first and second waves were performed for obstetric indications only. No newborns tested positive in the COVID-19 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in the first and second waves at the time of birth; however, three (4.83%) tested positive on day five of birth in the first wave. Fever was the most common presentation in newborns; seven (11.26%) in the first wave and three (20%) in the second wave. No neonatal death occurred in the first or second waves. No congenital anomalies were noted in the first or second waves of COVID-19. Conclusion In this study, we found that the maximum number of COVID-19-positive pregnant patients in both the first and second waves of COVID-19 were either asymptomatic or had mild infections. Second-wave infection was more lethal as compared to the first wave in terms of adverse maternal as well as fetal outcomes. No gestational age was an exception to the severity of disease and its adverse feto-maternal outcome. In our study, maternal co-morbidities did not impact the overall outcome. All cesarean sections were performed for indications other than COVID-19 infection. Long-term sequelae associated with COVID-19 were seen in both groups but more so in the second wave. No long-term sequelae like congenital anomalies in the babies were associated with COVID-19 either in the first or second wave.

Background: We aimed to characterise the long-term health outcomes of survivors of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and determine their recovery status and possible immunological basis. Methods: We performed a clinical observational study on 14 health workers who survived SARS coronavirus infection between Apr 20, 2003 and Jun 6, 2003 in Haihe Hospital (Tianjin, China). Eighteen years after discharge, SARS survivors were interviewed using questionnaires on symptoms and quality of life, and received physical examination, laboratory tests, pulmonary function tests, arterial blood gas analysis, and chest imaging. Plasma samples were collected for metabolomic, proteomic, and single-cell transcriptomic analyses. The health outcomes were compared 18 and 12 years after discharge. Control individuals were also health workers from the same hospital but did not infect with SARS coronavirus. Findings: Fatigue was the most common symptom in SARS survivors 18 years after discharge, with osteoporosis and necrosis of the femoral head being the main sequelae. The respiratory function and hip function scores of the SARS survivors were significantly lower than those of the controls. Physical and social functioning at 18 years was improved compared to that after 12 years but still worse than the controls. Emotional and mental health were fully recovered. Lung lesions on CT scans remained consistent at 18 years, especially in the right upper lobe and left lower lobe lesions. Plasma multiomics analysis indicated an abnormal metabolism of amino acids and lipids, promoted host defense immune responses to bacteria and external stimuli, B-cell activation, and enhanced cytotoxicity of CD8+ T cells but impaired antigen presentation capacity of CD4+ T cells. Interpretation: Although health outcomes continued to improve, our study suggested that SARS survivors still suffered from physical fatigue, osteoporosis, and necrosis of the femoral head 18 years after discharge, possibly related to plasma metabolic disorders and immunological alterations. RESUMO

We report a case of severe tick-borne encephalitis in a pregnant woman, leading to a prolonged stay in the intensive care unit. She showed minor clinical improvement >6 months after her presumed infection. The patient was not vaccinated, although an effective vaccine is available and not contraindicated during pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: There are no published studies assessing the evolution of combined determination of the lung diffusing capacity for both nitric oxide and carbon monoxide (DLNO and DLCO) 12 months after the discharge of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. METHODS: Prospective cohort study which included patients who were assessed both 3 and 12 months after an episode of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. Their clinical status, health condition, lung function testings (LFTs) results (spirometry, DLNO-DLCO analysis, and six-minute walk test), and chest X-ray/computed tomography scan images were compared. RESULTS: 194 patients, age 62 years (P25-75, 51.5-71), 59% men, completed the study. 17% required admission to the intensive care unit. An improvement in the patients' exercise tolerance, the extent of the areas of ground-glass opacity, and the LFTs between 3 and 12 months following their hospital discharge were found, but without a decrease in their degree of dyspnea or their self-perceived health condition. DLNO was the most significantly altered parameter at 12 months (19.3%). The improvement in DLNO-DLCO mainly occurred at the expense of the recovery of alveolar units and their vascular component, with the membrane factor only improving in patients with more severe infections. CONCLUSIONS: The combined measurement of DLNO-DLCO is the most sensitive LFT for the detection of the long-term sequelae of COVID-19 pneumonia and it explain better their pathophysiology.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a vector-borne disease caused by a flavivirus, the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), and transmitted by the bite of infected Ixodes ricinus ticks. The European subtype (TBEV-Eu) is endemic in 27 European countries. During the last decade, increased TBE incidence was observed in many countries, including some of those believed to be of low endemicity/devoid of TBEV circulation. However, data dealing with TBE in children are far less profuse than with adults. Historically, children are known to have mild TBEV infection with favorable outcomes. That said, recent case reports and observational studies on pediatric cohorts have challenged this point of view. Like adults, children may present severe forms and fail to completely recover following TBE infection, at times leading to long-term cognitive impairment. In this review, we comprehensively describe the incidence, exposure factors, and transmission routes of TBEV in children, as well as the clinical and biological manifestations of TBE and imaging findings in this population. We also harness new data on long-term outcomes and sequelae in pediatric cohorts. Finally, we provide an overview of vaccination recommendations for children in European countries.
