As the span of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) arch bridges increases, the hydration heat temperature effect of concrete inside steel tube becomes more severe, which increases the safety risk during the construction process. Therefore, a numerical simulation of the mechanical response of a long-span CFST arch bridge under the influence of hydration heat was carried out. First, based on the hydration heat conduction theory, a finite element model of the transient temperature field of a CFST arch rib was established. The temperature distribution of the CFST arch rib and its variation with time were revealed, and an approximate formula for the distribution of the hydration heat temperature along the radial direction of the CFST was provided. Subsequently, the variation law of the thermal stress of a CFST during hydration heat release was investigated. Finally, based on the principle of temperature equivalence, a finite element model of the overall CFST arch rib was established to examine the effect of hydration heat on the deformation of the arch rib. The results reveal that the hydration heat temperature field of the CFST arch rib exhibits nonlinear and axisymmetric characteristics. The maximum temperature of the section and the maximum temperature difference can reach 73.5 °C and 33.2 °C, respectively. Because of the influence of the hydration heat, there is a significant stress gradient in the cross section of the arch rib. A maximum radial stress of 2.08 MPa is attained, indicating a risk of concrete cracking. Additionally, the displacement along the transverse and vertical directions of the chord tube exhibits an initial increase, followed by a decrease over time. The maximum transverse displacement of the chord tube reaches 70.6 mm, while the vertical displacement reaches 117.8 mm.

Tensile tests were performed on Cu64Zr36 metallic glass at strain rates of 107/s, 108/s, and 109/s via classical molecular dynamics simulations to explore the underlying mechanism by which strain rate affects deformation behavior. It was found that strain rate has a great impact on the deformation behavior of metallic glass. The higher the strain rate is, the larger the yield strength. We also found that the strain rate changes the atomic structure evolution during deformation, but that the difference in the atomic structure evolution induced by different strain rates is not significant. However, the mechanical response under deformation conditions is found to be significantly different with the change in strain rate. The average von Mises strain of a system in the case of 107/s is much larger than that of 109/s. In contrast, more atoms tend to participate in deformation with increasing strain rate, indicating that the strain localization degree is more significant in cases of lower strain rates. Therefore, increasing the strain rate reduces the degree of deformation heterogeneity, leading to an increase in yield strength. Further analysis shows that the structural features of atomic clusters faded out during deformation as the strain rate increased, benefiting more homogeneous deformation behavior. Our findings provide more useful insights into the deformation mechanisms of metallic glass.

Deep-buried tunnels with weak surrounding rock are frequently encountered issues in traffic engineering. It plays an important role in the excavation process and the project operation. This paper applies the theoretical analysis and laboratory test related to four different conditions in terms of their thickness to determine the mechanical response of deep-buried tunnel lining. Then, the energy dissipative structure theory is employed to explain the experimental results. This paper has made the following achievements: firstly, it is found that the toughness of the secondary lining was found to be often the most important indicator of tunnel safety, with better-toughness linings having higher tensile strength and crack resistance. Secondly, it suggests that the inclusion of steel reinforcement in the concrete lining can effectively improve the secondary lining toughness. Finally, it proves that the more ductile liner had more energy, higher load-carrying capacity, and was better able to maintain the overall stability of the structure.

At present, China's demand for high-speed railway construction is constantly increasing, and the construction of Multi line high-speed railway tunnels has been put on the agenda. The design and construction issues of super-large-sections tunnels urgently need to be addressed. The Xiabei mountain No. 1 and No. 2 tunnels in the Hangzhou-Taizhou Railway are typical shallow-buried super-large-section-tunnels in weak surrounding rock, and their design and construction issues are representative. Eleven monitoring sections were set up in the tunnel, including tunnel deformation, surrounding rock, shotcrete, steel frames, bolts and temporary support mechanical responses. Taking the monitoring data of the most typical cross-section as an example, the mechanical response of the support structure of a shallow-buried super-large-section tunnel was analyzed in detail. Based on previous research results, this paper discusses and summarizes the common construction problems of this type of tunnel, and puts forward corresponding suggestions. The existing formula for calculating surrounding rock pressure has poor applicability to super-large-section tunnels constructed by step excavation, resulting in conservative support parameters. Therefore, based on the monitoring values of surrounding rock pressure at 10 monitoring sections in Xiabei mountain No. 1 and No. 2 tunnels, empirical parameters reflecting the impact of step excavation were summarized. Based on the Wang formula and combined with the step excavation empirical parameters, an empirical formula for the surrounding rock pressure of shallow-buried super-large-section tunnels considering step excavation was constructed. The calculated results are in good agreement with the on-site monitoring data. This study can provide a good reference for similar projects.

The stability of coal and rock masses in water-rich mines is affected by both mine water erosion and dynamic disturbances. Thus, it is necessary to study the dynamic mechanical response and failure characteristics of coal and rock under the combination of saltwater and a high strain rate. To this end, a split Hopkinson pressure bar device was employed to investigate the effects of impact velocity, water content, and immersion liquid on the dynamic mechanical behaviours of coal and rock. The results revealed that the weakening effect of saltwater on the dynamic mechanical properties of coal and rock is much greater than that of distilled water. With increasing moisture content, the dynamic compressive strength of the coal specimens decreases monotonically, while that of the rock shows a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. The failure process and destruction of coal and rock are comprehensively affected by both the external impact load and the physical and mechanical properties of the material. The degree of damage of the coal and rock specimens increases with increasing impact velocity and water content. Moreover, the influence of various factors on the impact fracture mechanism of coal and rock under saltwater immersion conditions was revealed. These findings are highly important for the design and maintenance of underground coal and rock building structures.

The safety of crews is the primary concern in the manned lunar landing project, particularly during re-entry as the manned spacecraft returns from a direct Lunar-Earth trajectory. This paper analyzed the crew's chest biomechanical response to assess potential injuries caused by acceleration loads during the re-entry phase. Initially, a sophisticated finite element model of the chest was constructed, whose effectiveness was verified by experiments involving vertebral range of motion, rib lateral rupture, and chest frontal impact. The model was then subjected to the return re-entry loads simulating the Apollo and Chang'e 5 T1 (CE-5T1) test returner to specifically analyze the correlation between the acceleration load and the injury of the crew's chest tissues and organs. The results indicate that the biomechanical response of crew chest bone tissue under the two return missions is within the threshold value and will not directly cause damage. Compared to the Apollo mission, the CE-5T1 mission's load poses a higher risk to internal organs. These findings can enhance the crew's safety and provide reliable assurance for future space exploration.

Dynamic networks composed of constituents that break and reform bonds reversibly are ubiquitous in nature owing to their modular architectures that enable functions like energy dissipation, self-healing, and even activity. While bond breaking depends only on the current configuration of attachment in these networks, reattachment depends also on the proximity of constituents. Therefore, dynamic networks composed of macroscale constituents (not benefited by the secondary interactions cohering analogous networks composed of molecular-scale constituents) must rely on primary bonds for cohesion and self-repair. Toward understanding how such macroscale networks might adaptively achieve this, we explore the uniaxial tensile response of 2D rafts composed of interlinked fire ants (S. invicta). Through experiments and discrete numerical modeling, we find that ant rafts adaptively stabilize their bonded ant-to-ant interactions in response to tensile strains, indicating catch bond dynamics. Consequently, low-strain rates that should theoretically induce creep mechanics of these rafts instead induce elastic-like response. Our results suggest that this force-stabilization delays dissolution of the rafts and improves toughness. Nevertheless, above 35[Formula: see text] strain low cohesion and stress localization cause nucleation and growth of voids whose coalescence patterns result from force-stabilization. These voids mitigate structural repair until initial raft densities are restored and ants can reconnect across defects. However mechanical recovery of ant rafts during cyclic loading suggests that-even upon reinstatement of initial densities-ants exhibit slower repair kinetics if they were recently loaded at faster strain rates. These results exemplify fire ants' status as active agents capable of memory-driven, stimuli-response for potential inspiration of adaptive structural materials.

Polyethylene glycol chains in two terminals of the naphthalene functional group are threaded into α-cyclodextrin cavities to form the pseudopolyrotaxane (NPR), which not only effectively induces the phosphorescence of the naphthalene functional group by the cyclodextrin macrocycle confinement, but also provides interfacial hydrogen bonding assembly function between polyhydroxy groups of cyclodextrin and waterborne polyurethane (WPU) chains to construct elastomers. The introduction of NPR endows the elastomer with enhanced mechanical properties and excellent room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) emission (phosphorescence remains in water, acid, alkali, and organic solvents, even at 160 °C high temperatures). Especially, the reversible mechanically responsive room temperature phosphorescence behavior (phosphorescence intensity increased three times under 200% strain) can be observed in the mechanical stretch and recover process, owing to strain-induced microstructural changes further inhibiting the non-radiative transition and the vibration of NPR. Therefore, changing the phosphorescence behavior of supramolecular elastomers through mechanical stretching provides a new approach for supramolecular luminescent materials.

Two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx MXene materials show great potential in electrochemical and flexible sensors due to their high electrical conductivity, good chemical stability, and special delaminated structure. However, their thermal properties were rarely studied, which remarkably affect the stability and safety of various devices. Here, we fabricated a suspended MXene drum resonator photothermally driven by a sinusoidally modulated laser, measured the thermal time constant by demodulating the thermomechanical motion, and then calculated the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of the MXene film. Experiments show the thermal conductivity of the film increases from 3.10 to 3.58 W/m·K while the thermal diffusivity from 1.06 × 10-6 to 1.22 × 10-6 m2/s when temperature increases from 300 to 360 K. We also confirm the film thermal conductivity is mainly contributed by phonon transport rather than electron transport. Furthermore, the relationship between the mechanical and thermal properties of the MXene films was disclosed. The thermal conductivity decreases when film strain increases, caused by enhanced phonon scattering and softening of high-frequency phonons. The measurements provide a noninvasive method to analyze the thermal characteristics of suspended MXene films, which can be further extended to the thermal properties of other 2D materials.

In recent years, significant advancements have been made in developing architected materials, known for their benefits like being lightweight, customizable mechanical performance, and excellent energy absorption. The capabilities of 3D printing technology have facilitated the emergence of a diverse range of architected structures, featuring various unit cell types and geometries for different applications. This study explores the unique opportunity offered by multimaterial 3D printing in fine-tuning the mechanical performance of architected structures. The exploration of the programmability of these structures involves a systematic assessment of various material candidates. After careful evaluation, the selection process led to the choice of PLA and PCL biopolymers for the multimaterial structure. Experimental results emphasize the key role of design configurations in influencing mechanical characteristics, particularly in enhancing the energy absorption capacity of architected structures. By skillfully manipulating the local structure and composition through the synergistic combination of soft and hard materials, the study demonstrates the ability to achieve a diverse range of mechanical responses. The discovered insights present a promising approach that holds applicability in the design and development of multifunctional devices. This is especially significant in the biomedical field, where there is a growing demand for versatile devices.

In the pavement industry, there is a pressing need for the reuse of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) materials. However, the rutting deformation in existing pavement structures is often overlooked in the design of recycled asphalt pavement, which hinders long-term performance prediction and durability assessment. This study examined the viscoelastic properties and fatigue performance of recycled asphalt mixtures. Different combinations of surface layers with varying RAP contents and binder layers with different rutting damage levels were designed. A 3D-Move Analysis model was used to analyze the dynamic mechanical response of these structures under moving loads. Results showed that the stiffness of recycled asphalt mixture increased with the RAP content, but the fatigue performance decreased by 39.4% when the RAP content reached 50%. Incorporating 50% RAP in the surface layer can reduce the compressive stress caused by vehicle loading, thus reducing the vertical compression strain and permanent deformation of the asphalt layers and the subgrade. However, the surface layer with higher RAP content is exposed to intense alternating tensile and compressive strains, leading to poor fatigue durability. The dynamic mechanical behavior of recycled asphalt pavement structures was found to be significantly impacted by the characteristics of the binder layer. The lower dynamic modulus of the binder layer (e.g., 18 mm rutting depth) can lead to more deformation and an increased risk of fatigue cracking. Moreover, the dynamic performance of mixtures with 0% and 50% RAP in the surface layer is even more affected by changes in the binder layer properties. It is recommended to consider the design of dynamic modulus combinations of existing binder layer materials and surface materials with higher RAP, in order to increase the utilization of RAP for high-grade highways and improve the stress distribution to enhance their durability.

The mechanical response of asphalt pavement under vehicular loading is an essential reference for crack-resistant pavement design. However, limited research focuses on the mechanical response measurement of asphalt pavement using a large-particle-size crushed stone base treated with fly ash and slag powder. Therefore, two types of asphalt pavements were constructed. The first type of asphalt pavement uses a large-particle-size crushed stone base treated with fly ash and slag powder, where the slag powder uses granulated blast furnace slag powder. The second type uses a conventional cement-stabilized crushed stone base and serves as a reference structure. Firstly, the strain gauges and temperature sensors were installed during the construction of asphalt pavements. Secondly, the mechanical response of the pavement was tested at different speeds and service time conditions. Then, sensitivity analysis and three-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) were carried out. Finally, the prediction equations were developed. The results show that the longitudinal strain pulse of the asphalt layer exhibited a "compression-tension-compression" characteristic. For the transverse strain pulse of the asphalt layer, the base layer's transverse and longitudinal strain pulses were only shown as "tensile" characteristics. The vehicular speed significantly affected the strain values for the base and asphalt layers, showing a decreasing trend with increasing speed. For the asphalt layer, the strain values showed an increasing trend with increasing temperature; for the base layer, the strain values showed a decreasing trend with increasing service time. The type of base layer had a significant effect on the strain value. Compared with the conventional base layer, the large-particle-size crushed stone base treated with fly ash and slag powder had lower strain at the base layer and a lower position of the asphalt layer, which could better prevent bottom-up fatigue cracking. Finally, the strain prediction model of the pavement under the speed and temperature (service time) was fitted to obtain a model that can predict the mechanical response of the pavement under different operating conditions. The findings of this research can provide a reference for the design of asphalt pavement using a large-particle-size crushed stone base treated with fly ash and slag powder.

Sports equipment crafted from flexible mechanical metamaterials offers advantages due to its lightweight, comfort, and energy absorption, enhancing athletes' well-being and optimizing their competitive performance. The utilization of metamaterials in sports gear like insoles, protective equipment, and helmets has garnered increasing attention. In comparison to traditional truss and honeycomb metamaterials, the triply periodic minimal surface lattice structure stands out due to its parametric design capabilities, enabling controllable performance. Furthermore, the use of flexible materials empowers this structure to endure significant deformation while boasting a higher energy absorption capacity. Consequently, this study first introduces a parametric method based on the modeling equation of the triply periodic minimal surface structure and homogenization theory simulation. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of this method in designing triply periodic minimal surface lattice structures with a controllable and adjustable elastic modulus. Subsequently, the uniform flexible triply periodic minimal surface lattice structure is fabricated using laser selective sintering thermoplastic polyurethane technology. Compression tests and finite element simulations analyze the hyperelastic response characteristics, including the element type, deformation behavior, elastic modulus, and energy absorption performance, elucidating the stress-strain curve of the flexible lattice structure. Upon analyzing the compressive mechanical properties of the uniform flexible triply periodic minimal surface structure, it is evident that the structure's geometric shape and volume fraction predominantly influence its mechanical properties. Consequently, we delve into the advantages of gradient and hybrid lattice structure designs concerning their elasticity, energy absorption, and shock absorption.

In this study, a progressive damage model was developed for the mechanical response and damage evolution of carbon fiber stitched composite laminates under low-velocity impact (LVI). The three-dimensional Hashin and Hou failure criteria were used to identify fiber and matrix damage. The cohesive zone model was adopted to simulate the delamination damage, combined with the linear degradation discounting of the equivalent displacement method to characterize the stiffness degradation of the material, and the corresponding user material subroutine VUMAT was coded. The finite element analysis of the LVI of stitched composite laminates under different energies was finished in Abaqus/Explicit. Furthermore, the simulation predictions matched well with the results of the experimental tests. Based on this, composite laminates' mechanical response and damage forms with different thicknesses and stitch densities were analyzed. The findings show that the main damages of composite laminates were matrix tensile damage and delamination. The stitching process could improve the impact tolerance of composite laminates, inhibiting delamination and reducing the area of the delamination damage. The higher the density of the stitching, the more noticeable its inhibition would be. The thickness of the laminate also had a more significant effect on the damage to the laminate. Thin plates were more prone to matrix tensile damage due to their lower flexural rigidity, whereas thick plates were more susceptible to delamination because of their higher flexural rigidity.

Investigating the constitutive relationship and the damage failure mechanism of solid propellants is of significance for improving the safety, storage period and use efficiency of solid rocket motors. This paper focuses on the complex mechanical response behavior of composite solid propellants under loads and introduces experimental research on quasi-static and dynamic mechanical properties. Limited by the accuracy of instruments and testing methods, the research progress of macroscopic constitutive models, mesoscopic mechanical models and microscopic molecular models is summarized from the perspective of numerical simulations based on model scale and modeling methods. This paper tracks the historical progress of key models and summarizes the main achievements and prospects in this field. The research in this paper has high scientific and theoretical significance and engineering application value. It can provide an important reference and guidance for the structural optimization and performance improvement of solid propellants and lay a solid foundation for the development of solid rocket motors.

Additively manufactured synthetic bone scaffolds have emerged as promising candidates for the replacement and regeneration of damaged and diseased bones. By employing optimal pore architecture, including pore morphology, sizes, and porosities, 3D-printed scaffolds can closely mimic the mechanical properties of natural bone and withstand external loads. This study aims to investigate the deformation pattern exhibited by polymeric bone scaffolds fabricated using the PolyJet (PJ) 3D printing technique. Cubic and hexagonal closed-packed uniform scaffolds with porosities of 30%, 50%, and 70% are utilized in finite element (FE) models. The crushable foam plasticity model is employed to analyze the scaffolds' mechanical response under quasi-static compression. Experimental validation of the FE results demonstrates a favorable agreement, with an average percentage error of 12.27% ± 7.1%. Moreover, the yield strength and elastic modulus of the scaffolds are evaluated and compared, revealing notable differences between cubic and hexagonal closed-packed designs. The 30%, 50%, and 70% porous cubic pore-shaped bone scaffolds exhibit significantly higher yield strengths of 46.89%, 58.29%, and 66.09%, respectively, compared to the hexagonal closed-packed bone scaffolds at percentage strains of 5%, 6%, and 7%. Similarly, the elastic modulus of the 30%, 50%, and 70% porous cubic pore-shaped bone scaffolds is 42.68%, 59.70%, and 58.18% higher, respectively, than the hexagonal closed-packed bone scaffolds at the same percentage strain levels. Furthermore, it is observed in comparison with our previous study the µSLA-printed bone scaffolds demonstrate 1.5 times higher elastic moduli and yield strengths compared to the PJ-printed bone scaffolds.

Natural bone is a complex organic-inorganic composite tissue that possesses endogenous electrically conductive properties in response to mechanical forces. Mimicking these unique properties collectively in a single synthetic biomaterial has so far remained a formidable task. In this study, we report a synthesis strategy that comprised gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), sol-gel derived tertiary bioactive glass (BG), and uniformly dispersed multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to create nanocomposite hydrogels that mimic the organic-inorganic composition of bone. Using this strategy, biomaterials that are electrically conductive and possess electro-mechanical properties similar to endogenous bone were prepared without affecting their biocompatibility. Nanocomposite hydrogel biomaterials were biodegradable and promoted biomineralization, and supported multipotent mesenchymal progenitor cell (10T1/2) cell interactions and differentiation into an osteogenic lineage. To the best of our knowledge, this work presents the first study to functionally characterize suitable electro-mechanical responses in nanocomposite hydrogels, a key process that occurs in the natural bone to drive its repair and regeneration. Overall, the results demonstrated GelMA-BG-MWCNT nanocomposite hydrogels have the potential to become promising bioactive biomaterials for use in bone repair and regeneration.

Preciously assessing the creep mechanical response of sand-geomembrane interfaces is vital for the design of relevant engineering applications, which is inevitable to be influenced by temperature and stress statuses. In this paper, based on the self-developed temperature-controlled large interface shear apparatus, a series of long-term creep shear tests on textured geomembrane-silica sand interfaces in different temperatures, normal pressure, and creep shear pressure were conducted, and a database compiled from the physical creep shear test results is constructed. By adopting the database, three disparate machine learning algorithms of the Back Propagation Artificial Neural Network (BPANN), the Support Vector Machine (SVM) and the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) were adopted to assess the long-term creep mechanical properties of sand-geomembrane interfaces while also considering the influence of temperature. Then, the forecasting results of the different algorithms was compared and analyzed. Furthermore, by using the optimal machine learning model, sensitivity analysis was carried out. The research indicated that the BPANN model has the best forecasting performance according to the statistics criteria of the Root-Mean-Square Error, the Correlation Coefficient, Wilmot's Index of Agreement, and the Mean Absolute Percentage Error among the developed models. Temperature is the most important influence factor on the creep interface mechanical properties, followed with time. The research findings can support the operating safety of the related engineering facilities installed with the geomembrane.

For NiTi alloys prepared by the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), changes in the building directions will directly change the preferred orientation and thus directly affect the smart properties, such as superelasticity, as well as change the distribution state of defects and impurity elements to affect the phase transformation behaviour, which in turn affects the smart properties at different temperatures. In this study, the relationship between impurity elements, the building directions, and functional properties; the effects of building directions on the crystallographic anisotropy; phase composition; superelastic properties; microhardness; geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) density; and impurity element content of NiTi SMAs fabricated by LPBF were systematically studied. Three building directions measured from the substrate, namely, 0°, 45° and 90°, were selected, and three sets of cylindrical samples were fabricated with the same process parameters. Along the building direction, a strong <100>//vertical direction (VD) texture was formed for all the samples. Because of the difference in transformation temperature, when tested at 15 °C, the sample with the 45° orientation possessed the highest strain recovery of 3.2%. When tested at the austenite phase transformation finish temperature (Af)+10 °C, the 90° sample had the highest strain recovery of 5.83% and a strain recovery rate of 83.3%. The sample with the 90° orientation presented the highest microhardness, which was attributed to its high dislocation density. Meanwhile, different building directions had an effect on the contents of O, C, and N impurity elements, which affected the transformation temperature by changing the Ni/Ti ratio. This study innovatively studied the impurity element content and GND densities of compressive samples with three building directions, providing theoretical guidance for LPBFed NiTi SMA structural parts.

Currently, energy efficiency and saving in production engineering, including Material Extrusion (MEX) Additive Manufacturing, are of key importance to ensure process sustainability and cost-effectiveness. The functionality of parts made with MEX 3D-printing remains solid, especially for expensive high-performance polymers, for biomedical, automotive, and aerospace industries. Herein, the energy and tensile strength metrics are investigated over three key process control parameters (Nozzle Temperature, Layer Thickness, and Printing Speed), with the aid of laboratory-scale PEEK filaments fabricated with melt extrusion. A double optimization is attempted for the production by consuming minimum energy, of PEEK parts with improved strength. A three-level Box-Behnken design with five replicas for each experimental run was employed. Statistical analysis of the experimental findings proved that LT is the most decisive control setting for mechanical strength. An LT of 0.1 mm maximized the tensile endurance (∼74 MPa), but at the same time, it was responsible for the worst energy (∼0.58 MJ) and printing time (∼900 s) expenditure. The experimental and statistical findings are further discussed and interpreted using fractographic SEM and optical microscopy, revealing the 3D printing quality and the fracture mechanisms in the samples. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed. The findings hold measurable engineering and industrial merit, since they may be utilized to achieve an optimum case-dependent compromise between the usually contradictory goals of productivity, energy performance, and mechanical functionality.
