It is well known that dogs are capable of following human verbal instructions. However, very little is known about the equivalent ability in cats. In this study, we used a switched stimuli task to examine whether cats rapidly form picture-word association, which is a fundamental ability for word learning. We presented cats with two meaningless picture-word combinations, in the habituation phase. Then, on half of the trials we switched the combination (switched condition), but the other half of the trials remained as before (non-switched condition). If cats rapidly form picture-word association, they were expected to look at the monitor for longer in the switched condition, reflecting detection of the change. We used human speech as stimuli in Exp.1, and mechanical sounds (electronic sounds) in Exp.2. Cats expressed detection of the switched combination in Exp.1, where human speech and objects were paired. However, in Exp.2 where non-social sounds and objects were paired, there was no statistical difference between switched and non-switched conditions, although there was a main effect of condition when the data from the two experiments were pooled. These results demonstrate that cats can rapidly form picture-word association. Further research should investigate whether domestication has played a role in this ability.

Extracorporeal blood purification (ECBP) has become a popular treatment option for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) toxicity in small animals. However, challenges arise when using ECBP for small dogs and cats because the priming volume required by most machine-based ECBP platforms might be excessive, leading to cardiovascular instability if a blood prime is not used. This report describes the successful use of manual carbon hemoperfusion (MCHP) to reduce plasma meloxicam levels in a cat following an inadvertent overdose and its use in a dog following suspected ibuprofen ingestion. In both animals, MCHP reduced the circuit volume needed for ECBP from 125 mL with a machine-based therapeutic plasma exchange or 104 mL with an in-series carbon hemoperfusion on an intermittent hemodialysis platform to just 40-50 mL. In the cat, MCHP reduced plasma meloxicam levels by 44%, and in both animals, the use of MCHP in these pets was well-tolerated and safe. Due to pre-existing anemia, the cat required a blood transfusion but the dog did not. MCHP is technically simple and can be performed at any hospital with access to carbon filters and blood bank resources. This technique may represent a reasonable alternative to treat NSAID toxicities in animals that are too small for conventional extracorporeal decontamination methods using either machine-based platforms without using a blood prime or in locations where these machines are unavailable.

Coinfections are known to play an important role in disease progression and severity. Coinfections are common in cats, but no coinfection studies have investigated the in vitro dynamics between feline viral and bacterial pathogens. In this study, we performed co-culture and invasion assays to investigate the ability of common feline bacterial respiratory pathogens, Chlamydia felis and Mycoplasma felis, to replicate in and invade into Crandell-Rees feline kidney cells. We subsequently investigated how coinfection of these feline cells with each bacterium (C. felis or M. felis) and the common feline viral pathogen, felid alphaherpesvirus 1 (FHV-1), affects replication of each agent in this cell culture system. We also investigated the metabolic impact of each co-pathogen using metabolomic analysis of infected and coinfected cells. C. felis was able to invade and replicate in CRFKs, while M. felis had little capacity to invade. During coinfection, FHV-1 replication was minimally affected by the presence of either bacterial pathogen, but bacterial replication kinetics were more affected, particularly in M. felis. Both C. felis and M. felis replicated to higher levels in the presence of a secondary pathogen. Coinfections resulted in reprogramming of the glycolysis pathway, the pentose phosphate pathway, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. The distinct metabolic profiles of coinfected cells compared to those of cells infected with just one of these three pathogens, as well as the impact of coinfections on viral or bacterial load, suggest strong interactions between these three pathogens and possible synergistic mechanisms enhancing virulence that need further investigation.IMPORTANCEIn the natural world, respiratory pathogens coexist within their hosts, but their dynamics and interactions remain largely unexplored. Herpesviruses, mycoplasmas, and chlamydias are common and significant causes of acute and chronic respiratory and system disease in animals and people, and these diseases are increasingly found to be polymicrobial. This study investigates how coinfection of feline cells between three respiratory pathogens of cats impact each other as well as the host innate metabolic response to infection. Each of these pathogens have been implicated in the induction of feline upper respiratory tract disease in cats, which is the leading cause of euthanasia in shelters. Understanding how coinfection impacts co-pathogenesis and host responses is critical for improving disease management.

Cats, being the definitive host of Toxoplasma gondii, have a significant impact on the spread and outbreaks of the parasite. An essential factor in comprehending the transmission pattern of this parasite is an analysis of the genetic diversity distribution in cats infected with T. gondii. This study was aimed at determining the prevalence rate and genotyping of T. gondii in stray cat feces from Khorramabad, West Iran. In the years 2016-2017, 200 cats were sampled to get fresh feces specimens. Parasitological methods were utilized for the identification of oocysts. The DNA was isolated from the feces using a commercially available Genomic Mini Kit. In order to identify the genetic composition of T. gondii, we employed PCR-RFLP, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis of the GRA6 target gene. No one of the samples tested positive for parasitology techniques. A total of 6.5 % (13/200) samples were positive when using the GRA6-PCR method. Based on PCR-RFLP results, all 13 samples were of T. gondii type III genotype. The nucleotide sequences of two samples from this study were found to be 5 % different from those of 12 references of T. gondii and one strain of Hammondia hamondi that was used as an external control. Based on the findings, molecular tests are more sensitive than parasitological methods. The RFLP approach revealed that type III of T. gondii is the prevailing and important genotype in Khorramabad, West Iran.

Background and Objectives: Helicobacters are gastric and enterohepatic and live in the gut. The role of enterohepatic Helicobacters as intestinal pathogens is uncertain, while stomach Helicobacters are well-known. The prevalence of Helicobacter species in cat feces helps us understand their impact on cat health and human disease transmission. This study used PCR to identify Helicobacter spp. in feces samples from healthy and diarrhoeic cats, independent of the reason. The study also compared intestinal and stomach Helicobacter species. Materials and Methods: PCR analysis was performed on fecal samples from 40 cats, with 20 cats having diarrhea and 20 cats showing no symptoms. The PCR analysis aimed to detect Helicobacter's presence using a method that identifies the bacteria through the 16S rRNA gene. Results: The diarrhoeic group had a greater prevalence of infection (17:9 ratio), with an overall 65% infection rate detected. Cats that were older than 2 years showed a higher incidence of disease. H. canis had the highest occurrence rate (69.2%), followed by H. bilis, H. bizzozeronii, and H. salomonis. Significantly, H. pylori, H. felis, and H. heilmannii were not reported. Conclusion: H. canis was the predominant species found in both healthy and diarrheic cats, indicating the need for more investigation. The detection of the gastric species H. salomonis and H. bizzozeronii further complicates the classification. This highlights the complex nature of Helicobacter infections in cats, emphasizing the need for further investigation to guide the development of preventative measures and treatment techniques for both veterinary and public health purposes.

Introduction: In August 2021, an outbreak of Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV) was observed in four 3-month-old Pallas' cats at Xining Wildlife Park. Despite timely intervention, the Pallas'cat cubs continued to experience clinical symptoms including diarrhea, seizures, and decreased white blood cell count, and all four cats died. Methods: FPV clinical suspicions were initially confirmed by positive Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing. Pathological and immunohistochemical examinations (IHC) were performed on some organs, and the results showed that, encephalitis, viral enteritis, and splenitis occurred. Results: The virus replicates extensively in the cytoplasm of lymphocytes and macrophages in the lamina propria of the small intestine mucosa. A strain of FPV was successfully isolated and culture in CRFK cells. Through molecular identification, sequence analysis, and phylogenetic analysis of the VP2 gene in this strain, we have revealed the presence of a novel synonymous mutation. From July to December 2021, surveillance on stray cats and susceptible wildlife at Xining Wildlife Park indicated widespread FPV transmission. Discussion: The findings highlight the urgent need for ongoing epidemiological monitoring and active disinfection measures to prevent FPV transmission in wildlife parks.

CASE HISTORIES: The medical records of cats and dogs admitted to the Department of Small Animal Surgery of the Centre Hospitalier Vétérinaire Pommery (Reims, France) with a history of vehicular trauma or falls from the first floor or higher were screened for occurrences of a lower urinary tract (LUT) rupture. Signalment, reported injuries, diagnostic imaging findings, and blood test results were extracted from the medical records. CLINICAL FINDINGS: A total of 585 animals were included in the study: 339 cats and 246 dogs. The overall prevalence of LUT rupture was 1.36% (8/585) and was 1.2% (3/246) in dogs and 1.4% (5/339) in cats. The most common site of rupture was the bladder (5/8 cases). All orthopaedic injuries were pelvic fractures and animals with pelvic fractures were 6.4 (95% CI: 1.67-24.41; p = 0.012) times more likely to incur urinary tract rupture than those without pelvic fractures. However, three cases had LUT rupture without associated orthopaedic injury. All affected patients had free abdominal fluid identified by abdominal focused assessment with sonography for trauma. Serum urea and creatinine concentrations were elevated in 5/8 cases of LUT rupture, and 4/8 cases were able to urinate. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although LUT injury and pelvic fracture were significantly associated in this study, 3/8 cases of LUT rupture in this study had no orthopaedic injury and half retained the ability to urinate. Thus, lack of associated fractures and ability to urinate should not be used to rule out a LUT rupture. The possibility of bladder or urethral rupture should be considered in all patients with a history of severe blunt trauma.

Lingual biopsies are a common type of sample submission at the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (AVDL). Here we describe the pathology diagnoses of 793 canine and 406 feline lingual biopsies submitted to the AVDL in a 10-y period. Non-neoplastic lesions accounted for 450 diagnoses (57%) in dogs and 239 diagnoses (59%) in cats. Canine non-neoplastic lesions consisted of inflammatory lesions (286 cases; 64% of non-neoplastic lesions) and tumor-like proliferative lesions (164 cases; 36% of non-neoplastic lesions). Feline non-neoplastic lesions consisted of inflammatory lesions (228 cases; 95% of non-neoplastic lesions) and tumor-like proliferative lesions (11 cases; 5% of non-neoplastic lesions). The most common canine neoplasms were melanocytic neoplasms (103 cases; 30% of neoplasms) and epithelial neoplasms (102 cases; 30% of neoplasms), followed by mesenchymal neoplasms (90 cases; 26% of neoplasms) and round cell neoplasms (48 cases; 14% of neoplasms). Approximately 43% of melanocytic neoplasms affected Chow Chows and Labrador Retrievers, and 20% of epithelial neoplasms affected Labrador Retrievers. In cats, most tumors were epithelial (158 cases; 94% of neoplasms), followed by mesenchymal (8 cases; 5% of neoplasms) and round cell neoplasms (1 case; 1% of neoplasms). Over 50% of neoplasms of cats affected domestic shorthair cats. Although the percentage of lingual biopsies that had a neoplastic diagnosis was roughly the same between species, the diversity of neoplasms was much greater in dogs than in cats.

Overpopulation of domestic animals leads to various problems, such as the formation of feline colonies. Population management methods for these colonies have been studied previously; however, no scientific consensus has been reached. This study evaluated the use of trap-neuter-return (TNR) in a free-roaming cat colony in Brazil's Federal District. The study was conducted over 18 months and involved 157 cats that had not previously been managed. The experiment had three parts: recognition and preparation, TNR intervention, and monitoring. The results showed a 47.8% reduction in colony size. Additionally, 98.8% of the animals were sterilized. The adoption, death, disappearance, abandonment, and immigration rates were 19.7%, 14.0%, 14.0%, 7.6%, and 4.5%, respectively. The TNR experiment conducted in the proposed manner, which included detailed pre-planning, mass sterilization, active management, continuous monitoring, and educational actions, proved to be efficient and humane. However, guidelines aimed at managing animal populations, promoting adoption, preventing abandonment, and educating people about responsible pet ownership are essential for achieving sustainable results.

Obesity is a major public health concern in both humans and animals, leading to several metabolic complications. Recent human studies have classified obesity into two phenotypes, metabolically healthy (MHO) and metabolically unhealthy (MUO) obesity based on cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors. MHO cases lack these risk factors and are protected from metabolic complications of obesity, whereas MUO cases exhibit the opposite characteristics. Moreover, recent studies have highlighted the possible role of the gut microbiome in determining metabolic health of obese individuals. However, studies on the association between the gut microbiome and obesity and metabolic abnormalities in cats are limited. Therefore, we aimed to examine the association between metabolic health phenotypes and gut microbiota composition and diversity in obese cats. We investigated hormone and serum biochemistry parameters and composition of the gut microbiota in non-obese (NO), MHO, and MUO groups. The abundances of Bifidobacteriaceae, Coriobacteriaceae, and Veillonellaceae were significantly higher in the obese versus NO group, showing a positive correlation with body mass index. The abundance of Ruminococcaceae was significantly higher in the MUO versus NO group, showing a positive correlation with triglyceride and total cholesterol levels. However, obesity, whether MHO or MUO, had only a minimal impact on fecal microbiota. Therefore, further studies are warranted to investigate whether gut microbiota could be a beneficial tool for the treatment or management of this condition.

The relinquishment of companion animals to shelters presents significant challenges for animal welfare organizations and has substantial implications for the well-being of both the animals and their owners. This study aims to investigate the reasons for voluntarily relinquishing animals to shelters, to examine species-specific differences (cats and dogs), to compare initial relinquishments to returns (re-relinquishments or readmissions), and to identify potential changes over a 6-year period framing the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A retrospective analysis of owner relinquishment records from an open admission shelter in the US was conducted using content analysis, a novel approach in this area of research. A total of 13 relinquishment reason categories were identified, as well as 9 separate categories for specific behavioral issues. Among 2836 randomly selected records, the most frequent reasons cited were Behavior Issues (28%), Housing/Moving (18%), Unable to Care (16%), Too Many Pets (10%), Financial (6%), and Owner Allergies (5%). The most common behavioral reasons reported were Aggression (32% of behavioral surrenders), Social Conflict (28%), and Soiling (13%). However, differences were observed in the pattern of relinquishment reasons based on statistical analyses of species, type of relinquishment, and year. Regarding temporal trends, Housing/Moving and Financial reasons were not found to have changed significantly since the pandemic, but the relative frequency of the category Unable to Care increased significantly in 2022 and 2023. Collectively, these findings partially replicate those from research spanning the past several decades in this area that has employed less systematic methodology and can further be used to help identify and understand the primary drivers of owner relinquishments.

OBJECTIVES: To adapt the Charlotte Attitudes Toward Sleep (CATS) scale, the only self-assessment instrument measuring non-dysfunctional attitudes toward sleep, into Portuguese and to study its psychometric properties in a Portuguese sample. METHOD: A sample of 1858 participants, recruited through non-probabilistic methods, was randomly split in two subsamples; one was used to develop the CATS model, the other for testing model invariance. We used structural equation models to assess factorial validity, measurement invariance, and relationships with other variables (e.g., the Karolinska Sleep Questionnaire) through confirmatory factorial analysis and causal models using a robust maximum likelihood method with Satorra-Bentler correction. RESULTS: The CATS factorial model showed excellent evidence of factorial validity (robust CFI = 0.987, TLI = 0.979, SRMR = 0.026, RMSEA = 0.043), good reliability indicators (α and ώ1 > 0.75), and strict invariance of measurement (|∆CFI|< 0.01). CATS factors were weak-to-moderate predictors of sleep behaviors (ß < 0.4). The scale showed evidence of divergent validity with the Karolinska Sleep Questionnaire. Some items had significant sensitivity problems and/or did not have adequate factorial weights and had to be dropped from the model. CONCLUSIONS: The CATS is a new and promising scale with solid evidence of validity in terms of internal structure, but with sensitivity issues at item level. Further work should be carried out at item level to increase sensitivity and predictive validity, and further research with other samples, such as clinical sleep medicine patients, should be conducted.

Feline respiratory disease complex (FRDC) is a highly prevalent syndrome in cats that often result in fatal outcomes. FRDC etiology is complex, and often, multiple viral and bacterial pathogens are simultaneously associated with disease causation. There is limited information about the role of co-infections in pathogenesis and the current prevalence of pathogens in North America. We aimed to conduct a study using technical advances in molecular diagnosis and statistical modeling analysis to elucidate the occurrence of pathogens and how co-infections affect disease severity. We attained information from three diagnostic laboratories in North America regarding the occurrence of Bordetella bronchiseptica, Chlamydia felis, Mycoplasma, Felid alphaherpesvirus 1 (FeHV-1), feline calicivirus (FCV), and influenza A, along with age, seasonality, sex, and clinical signs. We also evaluated the role of co-infections in disease severity. These pathogens were also investigated in clinically normal cats (control). The most detected pathogens were Mycoplasma, FCV, and FeHV-1. Most pathogens were detected in the control group, highlighting the challenge of interpreting positive testing results. Co-infections of Mycoplasma and FCV, as well as Mycoplasma and FeHV-1, were important predictors of disease severity. Age, sex, and season had a minor impact on pathogen occurrence. This study provides new insights into FRDC and underlines the relevance of diagnostic panels to screen for a range of pathogens, providing knowledge for timely diagnosis and therapeutic interventions.

Diligent application and implementation of biosecurity measures stand as the most effective measures to prevent disease transmission through direct or indirect interactions between poultry and free-ranging animals. Among these, free-ranging mammals can be hosts or disseminators of several pathogens relevant to poultry and of public health concern. Moreover, evidence of susceptibility to avian influenza virus infection in non-human mammals has raised questions about their potential role in the virus' epidemiology at the domestic animal-wildlife interface. Given this background, this study aimed to identify mammal species occurring near laying-hen houses and characterize the spatiotemporal patterns of these visits. Seven camera traps were deployed for a year-long period in three commercial poultry farms in a densely populated poultry area in Northern Italy. Various methods, including time series analysis and generalized linear models, were employed to analyze daily mammal visits. A total of 1,867 camera trap nights yielded 567 videos of seven species of wild mammals, and 1,866 videos showed domestic pet species (cats and dogs). Coypus (Myocastor coypus) and cats were the two mammals more frequently observed near poultry houses. For wild mammals, visits significantly increased at night, and slightly decreased during the spring season. Overall, the data hereby provided lay the groundwork for designing novel surveillance and intervention strategies to prevent cross-species disease transmission. Moreover, the utilization of visual evidence depicting free-ranging animals approaching poultry houses could assist health authorities in educating and raising awareness among stakeholders about potential risks of pathogen spillover.

Feline Leukemia Virus is a retrovirus causing fatal disease in domestic cats. While FeLV has been controlled in many countries, it remains a major concern in Latin American countries. This study conducted an epidemiological survey of FeLV in 182 Chilean domestic cats using PCR to detect provirus infection. The results were analysed using Multivariate Logistic Regression to examine risk factors associated with FeLV detection. The FeLV prevalence was 54.95 %, and statistically significant associations (p < 0.05) were found for two protective factors and one risk factor. Cats from Concepcion city (95 %CI 0.08-0.56 %) and cats sampled in 2022 (95 %CI 0.1-0.06 %) had lower odds ratios for provirus positivity, whereas non-vaccinated cats (95 %CI 2.3-15.8 %) had an increased odds ratio. No other factors were statistically significant. The high FeLV prevalence is similar to other Latin American countries and the geographical differences highlighted in this study likely correspond to the socioeconomic status of the owners. This study highlights the need for improved FeLV control measures such as promoting FeLV vaccination, implementing health screening prior to adoption of new cats, and educating owners about FeLV to control its circulation.

In the wake of recent medical developments in small animal practice, curing animals of their illnesses and restoring their health can be realized better than ever before. However, the growing medical possibilities are also leading to an increase in demand for better care for patients suffering from terminal illnesses. Consequently, the field of animal hospice and palliative care has become increasingly available, enabling veterinarians to optimize the quality of life of patients, such as dogs and cats, who no longer have a prospect of full recovery. Using qualitative, semi-structured interviews with 20 small animal veterinarians involved in hospice and palliative care, we investigated the factors that motivate veterinarians to become involved in hospice and palliative care and explored the importance of relationships, communication, time and infrastructure in this area. Findings show that personal experiences with their own pets or during training or work life motivated veterinarians to provide this service. Although veterinarians highlighted the importance of empathetic-driven relationships, they were aware that keeping an emotional distance from the patient and caregiver is significant to provide successful care. Further, veterinarians emphasized their high investment of time that resulted primarily from the increased frequency and provided opportunities to communicate with caregivers. The overall conclusion is that having time for patients and the patients' caregivers is one of the most important aspects of work in this field. However, as it will be also shown, veterinarians must consider aspects of self-care management by reflecting on their own time and energy resources while caring for animals and their caregivers.

Hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) are measured to assess long-term HPA-axis activity and may represent a valuable non-invasive tool to evaluate chronic stress in cats. This study investigated combing as a novel, low-stress method for HCC assessment, as well as possible associations between HCC and cat characteristics in 167 owned cats. Hair was sampled at veterinary clinics through clipping and/or combing the cat, or at home by the owner combing the cat. A questionnaire was sent to cat owners, including inquiries about the cat's sex, health status, and exposure to stress. HCC was quantified using a commercial cortisol assay kit. Despite variations within and between sampling methods, Spearman's correlation and Bland-Altman plots revealed a moderate correlation between clipped and combed samples (rs = 0.61, LOA -5.51 ± 22.54). In multiple linear regression, variations in HCC were observed based on sex, health status and cat group size. No associations were found between HCC and stress as assessed by owners. Despite study limitations and remaining uncertainty regarding factors influencing HCC, combing presents a convenient approach for evaluating long-term HPA-axis activity in clinical settings. The association between health and HCC suggests alterations in cortisol levels that are related to disease processes and stress-inducing events associated with the disease.

Domestic animals, such as cats and dogs, are present in the majority of Australian households. Recently, questions regarding the possibility that domestic animals can serve as silent witnesses, from whom evidence can be collected, or act as vectors of contamination and transfer, have started to be raised. Yet, little is known regarding the transfer and prevalence of human DNA to and from cats. This study investigated if cats are reservoirs and vectors for human DNA transfer. Twenty cats from 15 households were sampled from 4 different areas (head (fur), back (fur), left (skin) and right (fur)) to obtain information on the background DNA that may be found on an animal. Further, transfer of human DNA to and from an animal, after a short patting contact, was tested. Human DNA was found to be prevalent on all cats. Of the areas sampled, most DNA was collected from the top of the fur from the back followed by the head and right/fur. No or very low quantities of human DNA was recovered from the left (skin) area. Most of the human DNA originated from the owners, but DNA from others was also often present (47 % of samples). Further, the transfer tests demonstrated that human DNA transferred readily to (detected in 45 % of samples) and from (detected in 80 % of samples) cats during patting. These results show that animals can act as reservoirs of human DNA and vectors for human DNA transfer that may need to be considered during evaluative DNA reporting. Furthermore, if an interaction between an animal and a perpetrator is suspected, consideration should be given to collecting DNA evidence from suspected contact areas on an animal.

Toxoplasma gondii is a globally distributed zoonotic protist, capable of infecting all warm-blooded animals. In Australia, cats (Felis catus) are the only definitive host capable of spreading T. gondii infection via oocysts. Free-roaming cats are widespread in Australia and can play a central role in the ecology of T. gondii. Therefore, understanding the epidemiology of this parasite in stray and feral cats is essential to understanding the potential risk of infection in animals and humans. Due to a lack of easily accessible commercial kits, an in-house modified agglutination test (MAT) was established to test for IgG antibodies against T. gondii, using cell culture-derived T. gondii tachyzoites, and compared with a commercial MAT. A total of 552 serum samples collected during 2018 - 2021 from stray (n = 456) and feral cats (n = 90) (samples with missing data n = 6) from four Australian states, representing different age groups of both sexes, were screened for antibodies against T. gondii. Risk factors for T. gondii infection were assessed using multivariable logistic regression analysis. The in-house MAT had excellent agreement with the commercial MAT and provided a reliable and economical serological tool for T. gondii screening in animals. The overall observed seroprevalence for T. gondii in cats was 40.4 % (223/552). Bodyweight (as a proxy for age), geographical location, season and whether cats were feral or stray, were factors associated with T. gondii seropositivity in cats. Sex was not found to be a risk factor for T. gondii infection in feral and stray cats. This study shows that Australian stray and feral cats have a high T. gondii seroprevalence, which may translate to significant health impacts for wildlife species, livestock and the public.
