RESUMO

Smart energy storage systems, such as electrochromic supercapacitor (ECSC) integrated technology, have drawn a lot of attention recently, and numerous developments have been made owing to their reliable performance. Developing novel electrode materials for ECSCs that embed two different technologies in a material is an exciting and emerging field of research. To date, the research into ECSC electrode materials has been ongoing with excellent efforts, which need to be systematically reviewed so that they can be used to develop more efficient ECSCs. This mini-review provides a general composition, main evaluation parameters and future perspectives for electrode materials of ECSCs as well as a brief overview of the published reports on ECSCs and performance statistics on the existing literature in this field.

RESUMO

The integration of an electrochromic (EC), energy storage, and adaptive camouflage system into a multifunctional electronic device is highly desirable and yet challenging. In this work, two carbazole-based conjugated polymers were prepared to achieve a reversible color change from transparent to yellow, green, and blue-green by easy electrochemical polymerization. Due to its dendritic geometry, the conjugated polymer p3CBCB exhibits a loosely packed structure with a relatively higher specific surface area than pCBCB, as well as a relatively better ionic conductivity. The kinetic and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) study reveals that p3CBCB has superior properties with larger optical contrast and volumetric capacitance. Moreover, EC supercapacitors (ECSCs) are constructed with p3CBCB as the EC layer and ZnO@PEDOT:PSS as the ion storage layer. The dual function of a ZnO interface layer on improvement in reflectivity contrast (ΔR% > 35.1%) and cycling stability (over 40,000 cycles) using ZnO as a reflective and protective layer is demonstrated in an ion storage layer. Additionally, patterned prototype devices based on the design of double-sided ITO glass were successfully assembled, which can simulate conditions of various natural environments including forests, wilderness, and deserts. This study provides new ideas not only for the preparation of conjugated polymers that can simultaneously realize reversible transparent-yellow-green conversion but also for the achievement of high coloration efficiency, high reflectivity contrast, and good stability of ECSCs for adaptive camouflage.

RESUMO

Monolithic electrochromic supercapacitors (ECSs) have attracted increasing interest in recent electrochemical electronics due to their simplicity and unique ability to visually indicate stored energy levels. One crucial challenge for practical use is the improvement of shelf-life. Herein, zwitterionic (ZI) ionogels are proposed as effective electrolytes to reduce the self-discharging decay of ECSs. All-in-one ZI electrochromic (EC) gels are produced by one-pot sono-polymerization. The presence of ZI moieties in the gel does not affect the EC characteristics of chromophores. In addition, excellent capacitive properties in areal capacitance and coulombic efficiency are presented owing to the alignment of ZI units under an electric field and the formation of ion migration channels where rapid ion transport is allowed. Furthermore, the shelf-life of the ZI gel-based ECS is significantly improved by adjusting the interaction between polymeric gelators and ion species. The ZI gel-based ECS is expected to be a key platform for future smart energy storage devices.

RESUMO

Electrochromic supercapacitors that can change their appearances according to their charged states are presently attracting significant interest from both academia and industry. Tungsten oxide is often used in electrochromic supercapacitors because it can serve as an active material for both benchmarking electrochromic devices and high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. Despite this, acceptable visual aesthetics in electrochromic supercapacitors have almost never been achieved using tungsten oxide, because, in its pure form, this compound only displays a 1-fold color modulation from transparent to blue. Herein, we defy this trend by reporting the first ever Fabry-Perot (F-P) cavity-type electrochromic supercapacitors based only on a tungsten oxide material. The devices were sensitively changeable according to their charge/discharge states and displayed a wide variety of fantastic patterns consisting of different, vivid colors, with both simple and complex designs being achieved. Our findings suggested a novel direction for the aesthetic design of intelligent, multifunctional electrochemical energy storage devices.

RESUMO

Electrochromic devices have been widely adopted in energy saving applications by taking advantage of the electrode coloration, but it is critical to develop a new electrochromic device that can undergo smart coloration and can have a wide spectrum in transmittance in response to input light intensity while also functioning as a rechargeable energy storage system. In this study, a photoresponsive electrochromic supercapacitor based on cellulose-nanofiber/Ag-nanowire/reduced-graphene-oxide/WO3 -composite electrode that is capable of undergoing "smart" reversible coloration while simultaneously functioning as a reliable energy-storage device is developed. The fabricated device exhibits a high coloration efficiency of 64.8 cm2 C-1 and electrochemical performance with specific capacitance of 406.0 F g-1 , energy/power densities of 40.6-47.8 Wh kg-1 and 6.8-16.9 kW kg-1 . The electrochromic supercapacitor exhibits excellent cycle reliability, where 75.0% and 94.1% of its coloration efficiency and electrochemical performance is retained, respectively, beyond 10 000 charge-discharge cycles. Cyclic fatigue tests show that the developed device is mechanically durable and suitable for wearable electronics applications. The smart electrochromic supercapacitor system is then integrated with a solar sensor to enable photoresponsive coloration where the transmittance changes in response to varying light intensity.
