OBJECTIVES: To compare the buccal and palatal bone changes of maxillary posterior teeth produced by hybrid hyrax (HH) and conventional hyrax (CH) expanders in growing patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A sample of 32 patients with posterior crossbites in the late mixed dentition was recruited and randomly allocated into two groups. Group HH was composed of 18 individuals with a mean age of 10.7 years (six female, 12 male) treated with a hybrid expander with two anterior parasagittal miniscrews. Group CH was composed of 14 individuals with a mean age of 11.4 years (six female, eight male) treated with a conventional Hyrax expander. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) exams were obtained before expansion (T1) and after 11 months when the expander was removed (T2). Buccal and palatal bone plate thickness and height of maxillary posterior teeth were measured. Intergroup comparisons were performed using t or Mann-Whitney tests (P < .05). RESULTS: The CH group showed greater decreases of the buccal bone plate height (mean change: 1.27 mm) at the maxillary first premolars compared to the HH group (mean change: 0.11 mm, P = .001). No intergroup difference was found for changes in the buccal and palatal bone thickness. CONCLUSIONS: Hybrid expanders showed a tendency to cause less negative impact on the buccal bone plate height of first premolars compared to conventional Hyrax expanders. However, the difference was not clinically significant. Both hybrid and conventional Hyrax expanders are safe for the alveolar bone morphology in the late mixed dentition.

OBJECTIVES: To compare changes in upper arch dimension and molar inclination between Invisalign First (IF) and removable acrylic expander (RE) treatments during the mixed dentition period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen patients meeting inclusion criteria underwent IF treatment and were age matched with a group that received treatment with a removable acrylic expander (RE). Intercanine width (ICW), intermolar width, arch depth, buccolingual inclination of the first molars (MI), surface area (SA) and volume (VAP) of the anterior palate, and expansion were compared before and after treatment. The predictability of expansion was calculated for the IF group. Analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to assess differences. RESULTS: The ICW increased significantly by 2.14 mm in the IF group and 3.49 mm in the RE group, with no significant intergroup difference. Both groups exhibited significant increases in intermolar width (P < .05), except for intermolar distopalatal width in the IF group (P = .246). Mesiobuccal rotation of the first molar was observed with IF treatment. Although SA and VAP increased in both groups, the changes were not significant for the IF group (P > .05). The RE group exhibited significantly higher increases (P < .05), with an SA increase of 34.32 mm2 and VAP increase of 119.15 mm3. MI changes were in the opposite directions. The prediction accuracy of expansion was 70.28% for canines and 34.12% for first molars. CONCLUSIONS: Both appliances effectively expanded the intercanine region in growing patients. Expansion predictability was lower in first molars than in canines for the IF group. Removable acrylic expanders could be a choice of preference for expansion targeted to the molar region.

OBJECTIVES: To assess skeletal and dental effects and evaluate possible side effects of maxillary expansion with two different appliances, directly after expansion and 1 year postexpansion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-two patients with unilateral posterior crossbite (mean 9.5 ± 0.9 years) were randomized to either rapid maxillary expansion (RME) banded on the deciduous second molars and bonded to the primary canines or slow expansion with quad helix (QH) on the permanent first molars. Cone-beam computed tomography records were taken at baseline, directly after correction of the posterior crossbite and at follow-up 1 year after expansion. RESULTS: All patients were analyzed. RME opened the midpalatal suture more anteriorly and inferiorly (mean 4.1 mm) and less posteriorly and superiorly (mean 1.0 mm). No effect on midpalatal suture could be shown in the QH group after expansion, P < .001. Buccal bone width had significantly decreased (P < .001) in the QH group compared with the RME group. Buccal fenestrations and root resorption on the left first molar had a higher prevalence directly after expansion finished in the QH group (P = .0086, P = .013) but were not significant at 1-year follow-up (P = .11, P = .22). CONCLUSIONS: Opening of the suture with RME was more anterior and inferior, and the QH did not open the midpalatal suture at all. More buccal bone loss and fenestrations were seen on the permanent first molar in patients treated with conventional QH than RME anchored to deciduous teeth.

OBJECTIVES: To compare vertical and transverse changes in mixed dentition patients treated with the Invisalign First System (IFS) to those treated with a banded hyrax expander with fixed appliances (Hyrax) and control groups, and to assess the efficiency rate of dental arch expansion with IFS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 80 mixed dentition patients, with 40 in each group (IFS and Hyrax) and 40 controls from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collection. Skeletal and dental vertical dimension changes and arch width changes between pretreatment (T1) and posttreatment (T2) were evaluated. RESULTS: Age at T1, time interval (T1-T2), sex, and Angle class did not significantly differ among the groups. Mandibular plane angle changes showed a similar reduction for the control and IFS groups, with no changes in the Hyrax group. However, the differences among the three groups did not reach statistical significance (P = .06). The Hyrax group showed significantly greater expansion in maxillary intermolar width compared to the IFS group, 4.4 vs 2.5 mm, respectively. The efficiency of maxillary expansion using IFS ranged from 52.3% to 76.87%. CONCLUSIONS: During the mixed dentition stage, no significant changes occurred in vertical dimensions among the control, Hyrax, and IFS groups. Although there was a trend suggesting a greater reduction in mandibular plane angle in the IFS group compared to the Hyrax group, this may not be clinically significant given the less than 1° difference. IFS can be a viable option for addressing mild arch width deficiencies, with a predictable increase in intermolar width of approximately 2.5 mm.

How does the spatial heterogeneity of landscapes interact with the adaptive evolution of populations to influence their spreading speed? This question arises in agricultural contexts where a pathogen population spreads in a landscape composed of several types of crops, as well as in epidemiological settings where a virus spreads among individuals with distinct immune profiles. To address it, we introduce an analytical method based on reaction-diffusion models. We focus on spatially periodic environments with two distinct patches, where the dispersing population consists of two specialized morphs, each potentially mutating to the other. We present new formulas for the speed together with criteria for persistence, accounting for both rapidly and slowly varying environments, as well as small and large mutation rates. Altogether, our analytical and numerical results yield a comprehensive understanding of persistence and spreading dynamics. In particular, compared to a situation without mutations or to a single morph spreading in a heterogeneous landscape, the introduction of mutations to a second morph with reverse specialization, while consistently impeding persistence, can significantly increase speed, even if the mutation rate between the two morphs is very small. Additionally, we find that the amplitude of the spatial fragmentation effect is significantly increased in this case. This has implications for agroecology, emphasizing the higher importance of landscape structure in influencing adaptation-driven population dynamics.

BACKGROUND: The characteristics of patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) complicated by alcohol use disorders (AUD) are not well understood. Investigating the clinical characteristics and prognosis of this subgroup (AUD-ICH) is necessary. METHODS: This study involved young males with ICH who were admitted to our hospital between January 2013 and March 2022. Based on drinking patterns, the included cases were divided into three groups: AUD, occasional drinking, and non-drinking. We compared the clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients in the three groups. The effect of AUD on hematoma expansion and long-term dysfunction was explored by developing regression models. The potential mediating role of hematoma density heterogeneity within the relationship between AUD and hematoma expansion was examined through mediation analysis. RESULTS: This study included 222 cases of male patients with ICH, with a mean age of 54.16. AUD patients had a higher risk of hematoma expansion and dysfunction compared to occasional drinkers (odds ratio [OR] 2.966, p=0.028 for hematoma expansion; hazard ratio [HR] 2.620, p=0.006 for dysfunction) and non-drinkers (OR 3.505, p=0.011 for hematoma expansion; HR 2.795, P=0.003 for dysfunction). The mediation analysis showed that the indirect effect through hematoma density heterogeneity on the relationship between AUD and hematoma expansion was significant, with a mediated proportion of 19.3%. CONCLUSIONS: AUD was an independent risk factor for hematoma expansion and long-term dysfunction in young male patients with ICH. Hematoma density heterogeneity partially mediated the relationship between AUD and hematoma expansion.

miRNAs constitute fine-tuners of gene expression and are implicated in a variety of diseases spanning from inflammation to cancer. miRNA expression is deregulated in rheumatoid arthritis (RA); however, their specific role in key arthritogenic cells such as the synovial fibroblast (SF) remains elusive. Previous studies have shown that Mir221/222 expression is upregulated in RA SFs. Here, we demonstrate that TNF and IL-1ß but not IFN-γ activated Mir221/222 gene expression in murine SFs. SF-specific overexpression of Mir221/222 in huTNFtg mice led to further expansion of SFs and disease exacerbation, while its total ablation led to reduced SF expansion and attenuated disease. Mir221/222 overexpression altered the SF transcriptional profile igniting pathways involved in cell cycle and ECM (extracellular matrix) regulation. Validation of targets of Mir221/222 revealed cell cycle inhibitors Cdkn1b and Cdkn1c, as well as the epigenetic regulator Smarca1. Single-cell ATAC-seq data analysis revealed increased Mir221/222 gene activity in pathogenic SF subclusters and transcriptional regulation by Rela, Relb, Junb, Bach1, and Nfe2l2. Our results establish an SF-specific pathogenic role of Mir221/222 in arthritis and suggest that its therapeutic targeting in specific subpopulations could lead to novel fibroblast-targeted therapies.

Molecular crystals capable of colossal thermal expansion (TE) are fascinating owing to their substantial and continuous volume changes and reasonably linear responses to temperature. This makes them promising candidates for micromachine applications. Macroscopic motion is driven by subtle yet cooperative movements of molecules that respond to the thermal motions of dynamic functional units. The study of p-TIPS-DSB presented here offers a compelling case highlighting the relationship between the degree of dynamicity of functional units and TE behavior. In its α-phase, the p-TIPS-DSB crystal undergoes an irreversible martensitic transition to the ß-phase, accompanied by significant cooperative interlayer shear. This process substantially enhances the mobility of the side-chains driven by the increased free volume surrounding them. This nearly doubles the volumetric TE coefficient from 255.3 (10) to 444.9 (32) MK-1, particularly in the actuation direction from 175.0 (7) to 291.7 (20) MK-1, enabling about 4.5% elongation/contraction. As demonstrated here, p-TIPS-DSB exhibits a decent force density (> 1.4 × 107 N m-3) and precise motion control capabilities due to its hysteresis-free and non-abrupt TE nature. Furthermore, we demonstrated the limited operating distance of colossal TE materials can be amplified by utilizing levers, highlighting the high potential of these materials for use in micromachines.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of rapid maxillary expansion on the optic nerve sheath diameter and to examine its possible effects on intracranial pressure. Design: 20 patients with bilateral crossbite were selected. Hyrax Expander was applied and activated twice daily until the overcorrection was achieved. The optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) was measured via ultrasonography before the first activation (T0), then repeated after 1 (T1) and 10 min (T2). At the end of the expansion, ONSD was measured (T3) again, then the screw was activated for the last time, and measurements were repeated after 1 (T4) and 10 min (T5). The Friedman test was performed to compare the changes, and The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test was done to determine the significant intergroup changes (p < 0.05). Results: The ONSD increased significantly 1 min after the activations (T0-T1 and T3-T4) (P < 0.05). The ONSD values measured 10 min after the activations also increased significantly compared to the baseline values (T0-T2 and T3-T5) (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The activation of maxillary expansion appliances increased the optic nerve sheath diameter in adolescents. Therefore, orthodontists should be careful with patients at risk of intracranial hypertension.

Small molecule-responsive tags for targeted protein degradation are valuable tools for fundamental research and drug target validation. Here, we show that genetically incorporated unnatural amino acids bearing a strained alkene or alkyne functionality can act as a minimalist tag for targeted protein degradation. Specifically, we observed the degradation of strained alkene- or alkyne-containing kinases and E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes upon treatment with hydrophobic tetrazine conjugates. The extent of the induced protein degradation depends on the identity of the target protein, unnatural amino acid, and tetrazine conjugate, as well as the site of the unnatural amino acid in the target protein. Mechanistic studies revealed proteins undergo proteasomal degradation after tetrazine tethering, and the identity of tetrazine conjugates influences the dependence of ubiquitination on protein degradation. This work provides an alternative approach for targeted protein degradation and mechanistic insight, facilitating the future development of more effective targeted protein degradation strategies.

_ This study introduces a comprehensive model for the concurrent expansion planning of various energy systems and their associated equipment. The need to reduce network costs, emissions, losses, and feeder loading, as well as to enhance network reliability and voltage profile, mandates the utilization of proper multi-objective planning models that respect all network constraints. The introduced framework includes units for generating both electrical and thermal energies. The model leverages conventional expansion alternatives such as the installation of new lines, network reconfiguration, rewiring, and the addition of new thermal and electrical generating units to the network. Expansion planning involves determining the optimal time, location, and type of new installations to meet future energy demands while minimizing costs and emissions. Reconfiguration refers to altering the network topology to improve reliability and reduce losses. The proposed expansion planning is formulated as a discrete, nonlinear, and non-convex optimization problem, which is solved using the Self Adaptive Learning Bat Algorithm (SALBA). This algorithm improves convergence speed and increases the diversity of the search population, enhancing the likelihood of finding the global optimum. Numerical simulations of the proposed methodology on two modified standard IEEE test systems corroborate the efficacy and feasibility of the suggested approach. Key innovations include the comprehensive modeling for concurrent expansion planning, the use of an advanced optimization algorithm, and a focus on reducing costs, emissions, losses, and feeder loading while enhancing network reliability and voltage profile.

A semi-synthetic camptothecin derivative known as irinotecan hydrochloride is frequently used to treat colorectal cancer, including colorectal adenocarcinoma and lung cancers involving small cells. Irinotecan has a very short half-life; therefore, continuous infusions are required to keep the drug's blood levels at therapeutic levels, which could produce cumulative toxicities. Effective delivery techniques, including liposomes, have been developed to address these shortcomings. In this study, a continuous supercritical fluid approach dubbed Expansion Supercritical Fluid into an aqueous solution, in which the pressure decreases rapidly but remains over the critical pressure, is proposed to manufacture polyethylene glycolylated (PEGylated) liposomes carrying irinotecan hydrochloride. To accomplish this, PEGylated liposomes were created using a Box-Behnken design, and the operating parameters (flow rate, temperature, and pressure drop) were optimized. Encapsulation efficiency, mean size, and prepared liposome count were 94.6%, 55 nm, and 758 under ideal circumstances. Additionally, the stability of the PEGylated liposome was investigated during 8 weeks, and also PEGylated liposome-loaded irinotecan release profile was compared to conventional liposomes and free irinotecan, and a constant drug release was seen after the first burst release from liposomes.

This case report presents the detailed clinical and radiological findings of a 63-year-old male patient who presented with right shoulder pain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) revealed significant tears in most of the rotator cuff muscles. Despite these findings, the patient was able to perform full shoulder movements, suggesting that aponeurotic expansion may play a crucial role in this scenario. This case highlights important clinical findings that could lead to potential changes in shoulder surgery and rehabilitation approaches.

BACKGROUND: The expansion of bamboo forests increases environmental heterogeneity in tea plantation ecosystems, affecting soil properties and microbial communities. Understanding these impacts is essential for developing sustainable bamboo management and maintaining ecological balance in tea plantations. METHODS: We studied the effect of the continuous expansion of Pleioblastus amarus into tea plantations, by establishing five plot types: pure P. amarus forest area (BF), P. amarus forest interface area (BA), mixed forest interface area (MA), mixed forest center area (TB), and pure tea plantation area (TF). We conducted a comprehensive analysis of soil chemical properties and utilized Illumina sequencing to profile microbial community composition and diversity, emphasizing their responses to bamboo expansion. RESULTS: (1) Bamboo expansion significantly raised soil pH and enhanced levels of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus, particularly noticeable in BA and MA sites. In the TB sites, improvements in soil nutrients were statistically indistinguishable from those in pure tea plantation areas. (2) Continuous bamboo expansion led to significant changes in soil bacterial diversity, especially noticeable between BA and TF sites, while fungal diversity was unaffected. (3) Bamboo expansion substantially altered the composition of less abundant bacterial and fungal communities, which proved more sensitive to changes in soil chemical properties. CONCLUSION: The expansion of bamboo forests causes significant alterations in soil pH and nutrient characteristics, impacting the diversity and composition of soil bacteria in tea plantations. However, as expansion progresses, its long-term beneficial impact on soil quality in tea plantations appears limited.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact and best management sequence between adenotonsillectomy (AT) and rapid palatal expansion (RPE) on the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and minimum oxygen saturation (MinSaO2) in nonobese pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients presenting balanced maxillomandibular relationship. STUDY DESIGN/METHODS: Thirty-two nonobese children with balanced maxillomandibular relationship and a mean age of 8.8 years, with a graded III/IV tonsillar hypertrophy and maxillary constriction, participated in a cross-over randomized controlled trial. As the first intervention, one group underwent AT while the other underwent RPE. After 6 months, interventions were switched in those groups, but only to participants with an AHI > 1 after the first intervention. OSA medical diagnosis with the support of Polysomnography (PSG) was conducted before (T0), 6 months after the first (T1) and the second (T2) intervention. The influence of sex, adenotonsillar hypertrophy degree, initial AHI and MinSaO2 severity, and intervention sequence were evaluated using linear regression analysis. Intra- and intergroup comparisons for AHI and MinSaO2 were performed using ANOVA and Tukey's test. RESULTS: The initial AHI severity and intervention sequence (AT first) explained 94.9% of AHI improvement. The initial MinSaO2 severity accounted for 83.1% of MinSaO2 improvement changes. Most AHI reductions and MinSaO2 improvements were due to AT. CONCLUSIONS: Initial AHI severity and AT as the first intervention accounted for most of the AHI improvement. The initial MinSaO2 severity alone accounted for the most changes in MinSaO2 increase. In most cases, RPE had a marginal effect on AHI and MinSaO2 when adjusted for confounders.

Lithium (Li) metal is regarded as the most promising anode for next-generation batteries with high energy density. However, the uncontrolled dendrite growth and infinite volume expansion during cycling seriously hinder the application of Li metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, an inorganic/organic protective layer (labeled as BPH), composed of in situ formed inorganic constituents and PVDF-HFP, is designed on the 3D carbon paper (CP) surface by hot-dipping method. The BPH layer can effectively improve the mechanical strength and ionic conductivity of the SEI layer, which is beneficial to expedite the Li-ion transfer of the entire framework and achieve stable Li plating/stripping behavior. As a result, the modified 3D CP (BPH-CP) exhibits an ultrahigh average Coulombic efficiency (CE) of ≈99.7% over 400 cycles. Further, the Li||LiFePO4 (LFP) cell exhibits an extremely long-term cycle life of over 3000 cycles at 5 C. Importantly, the full cell with high mass loading LiFePO4 (20 mg cm-2) or LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM, 16 mg cm-2) cathode exhibits stable cycling for 100 or 150 cycles at 0.5 C with high-capacity retention of 86.5% or 82.0% even at extremely low N/P ratio of 0.88 or 0.94. believe that this work enlightens a simple and effective strategy for the application of high-energy-density and high-rate-C LMBs.

Advanced imaging of microorganisms, including protists, is challenging due to their small size. Specimen expansion prior to imaging is thus beneficial to increase resolution and cellular details. Here, we present a sample preparation workflow for improved observations of the single-celled eukaryotic pathogen Giardia intestinalis (Excavata, Metamonada). The binucleated trophozoites colonize the small intestine of humans and animals and cause a diarrhoeal disease. Their remarkable morphology includes two nuclei and a pronounced microtubular cytoskeleton enabling cell motility, attachment and proliferation. By use of expansion and confocal microscopy, we resolved in a great detail subcellular structures and organelles of the parasite cell. The acquired spatial resolution enabled novel observations of centrin localization at Giardia basal bodies. Interestingly, non-luminal centrin localization between the Giardia basal bodies was observed, which is an atypical eukaryotic arrangement. Our protocol includes antibody staining and can be used for the localization of epitope-tagged proteins, as well as for differential organelle labelling by amino reactive esters. This fast and simple technique is suitable for routine use without a superresolution microscopy equipment.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to evaluate the spontaneous distorotation of upper first permanent molars and the transverse dentoalveolar changes on digital casts in growing patients following maxillary expansion treatment using either the Leaf Expander® or the rapid maxillary expander (RME), both anchored to the deciduous second molar. TRIAL DESIGN AND SETTING: This study was a two-arm, parallel-assignment, RCT with a dual-centre design conducted at two teaching hospitals in Italy. PARTICIPANTS: Inclusion criteria included maxillary transverse deficiency, prepubertal development stage (cervical vertebra maturation stage [CVMS] 1-2) and early mixed dentition with fully erupted upper first permanent molars. Exclusion criteria were systemic diseases or syndromes, CVMS 3-6, agenesis of upper second premolars, unavailability of the second deciduous molar for anchorage and Class III malocclusion. RANDOMIZATION: Patients were randomly assigned to the Leaf Expander® or RME group using a computer-generated randomization list created by a central randomization centre. Randomization was conducted immediately before the start of treatment. INTERVENTION: The intervention involved treatment with either the Leaf Expander® or the RME. Both devices were anchored to the second deciduous molars. Following randomization, patients were further categorized based on the presence of no crossbite, unilateral crossbite or bilateral crossbite. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The primary outcome measure was the distorotation of the upper first molar (U6). Secondary outcomes included measurements of interdental linear dimensions, specifically upper inter-canine width (53-63), upper inter-molar width (MV16-MV26) and upper inter-deciduous second molar width (55-65). BLINDING: The examiner analysing the digital casts was blinded to the treatment groups to prevent detection bias and ensure objective assessment. However, due to the nature of the intervention, blinding was not feasible for the patients and clinicians involved in administering the treatment. RESULTS: A total of 150 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to two groups: 75 to the Leaf Expander® group and 75 to the RME group. Recruitment started in November 2021 and was completed in November 2022. At the time of analysis, the trial was complete with no ongoing follow-ups. ANOVA tests revealed no significant differences between the three subgroups (no-cross, unilateral-cross and bilateral-cross) within both the Leaf Expander® and RME groups at T0. The Leaf Expander® demonstrated significantly greater distorotation in the unilateral crossbite subgroup compared to the RME (p = .014). In terms of total molar distorotation, the Leaf Expander® appliance showed a significantly greater effect (12.66°) compared with conventional RME (7.83°). Linear regression analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between the extent of expansion and the degree of molar rotation. CONCLUSIONS: Maxillary expansion resulted in significant spontaneous molar distorotation when the appliance was bonded to the second deciduous molars. The Leaf Expander® exhibited significantly greater molar distorotation compared with conventional RME. The degree of molar distorotation was correlated with the extent of expansion obtained on the second deciduous molar. A "spontaneous" correction of the Class II malocclusion has been described after maxillary expansion (ME) treatment. The aim of the present review was to systematically summarize changes in the sagittal dentoskeletal parameters of growing Class II patients after ME. The study protocol was developed according to the PRISMA statement and registered in PROSPERO before literature search, data extraction and analysis. The PICO model was followed in the definition of the research question, search strategies and study selection criteria. Randomized and non-randomized studies on the sagittal effects of ME published in English language without date restrictions were electronically searched across the Cochrane Library, Scopus and MEDLINE/PubMed databases. Changes in sagittal dentoskeletal cephalometric parameters were analysed. The risk of bias in randomized and nonrandomized studies was assessed using the Rob2 and ROBINS-I tools, respectively. A narrative synthesis was performed, focusing on the investigated population, intervention, comparison, and main outcomes. Pairwise meta-analyses were used to compare the outcomes assessed in subjects who underwent ME versus untreated subjects. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria, four were included in the pairwise meta-analyses due to the presence of a control group. Slight but significant improvements in OVJ (MD: -0.36; 95%; CI [-0.69 to -0.01]; p = .04) and 6/6 molar relation (MD: 1.5; 95%; CI [0.69 to 1.61]; p < .0001) were found in patients who underwent ME compared with untreated subjects, whereas no improvement in skeletal parameters was observed. However, the limitations of a small body of moderate-quality evidence and possible confounding factors should be considered. Evidence on the sagittal skeletal and dental effects of ME in Class II patients is still ambiguous, suggesting the need for more clinical trials, including appropriate control subjects, randomization and blinding during outcome assessment.

Objectives: Although lower hemoglobin levels associate with worse intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) outcomes, causal drivers for this relationship remain unclear. We investigated the hypothesis that lower hemoglobin relates to increased hematoma expansion (HE) risk and poor outcomes using human observational data and assessed causal relationships using a translational murine model of anemia and ICH. Methods: ICH patients with baseline hemoglobin measurements and serial CT neuroimaging enrolled between 2010-2016 to a multicenter, prospective observational cohort study were studied. Patients with systemic evidence of coagulopathy were excluded. Separate regression models assessed relationships of baseline hemoglobin with HE (≥33% and/or ≥6mL growth) and poor long-term neurological outcomes (modified Rankin Scale 4-6) after adjusting for relevant covariates. Using a murine collagenase ICH model with serial neuroimaging in anemic vs. non-anemic C57/BL6 mice, intergroup differences in ICH lesion volume, ICH volume changes, and early mortality were assessed. Results: Among 1190 ICH patients analyzed, lower baseline hemoglobin levels associated with increased odds of HE (adjusted OR per -1g/dL hemoglobin decrement: 1.10 [1.02-1.19]) and poor 3-month clinical outcomes (adjusted OR per -1g/dL hemoglobin decrement: 1.11 [1.03-1.21]). Similar relationships were seen with poor 6 and 12-month outcomes. In our animal model, anemic mice had significantly greater ICH lesion expansion, final lesion volumes, and greater mortality, as compared to non-anemic mice. Conclusions: These results, in a human cohort and a mouse model, provide novel evidence suggesting that anemia has causal roles in HE and poor ICH outcomes. Additional studies are required to clarify whether correcting anemia can improve these outcomes.
