Despite significant advances in the study of fear and fear memory formation, little is known about fear learning and expression in females. This omission has been proven surprising, as normal and pathological behaviors are highly influenced by ovarian hormones, particularly estradiol and progesterone. In the current study, we investigated the joint influence of serotonin (5-HT) neurotransmission and estrous cycle phases (low or high levels of estradiol and progesterone) on the expression of conditioned fear in a group of female rats that were previously divided according to their response to stressful stimuli into low or high anxiety-like subjects. The baseline amplitude of the unconditioned acoustic startle responses was high in high-anxiety female rats, with no effect on the estrous cycle observed. Data collected during the proestrus-estrus phase revealed that low-anxiety rats had startle amplitudes similar to those of high-anxiety rats. It is supposed that high-anxiety female rats benefit from increased estradiol and progesterone levels to achieve comparable potentiated startle amplitudes. In contrast, female rats experienced a significant decrease in hormone levels during the Diestrus phase. This decrease is believed to play a role in preventing them from displaying a heightened startle response when faced with strongly aversive stimuli. Data collected after 5-HT and 8-OH-DPAT were administered into the basolateral nuclei and dorsal periaqueductal gray suggest that 5-HT neurotransmission works with progesterone and estrogen to reduce startle potentiation, most likely by activating the serotonin-1A receptor subtype.

Violence against women is a global public health problem. CDC data shows 41% of US women have experienced intimate partner violence. Burn-related violence against women is an extremely confronting form of physical violence. The aim of this study was to describe the frequency, demographics, injury characteristics and outcomes of women admitted to US burn centers who have experienced burn violence compared to those with accidental burn injuries. 2008-2018 data was queried from the ABA Burn Quality Care Platform registry for patients that were women and ≥18 years old. Women who experienced an assault or accidental burn injury were included. Women who experienced self-harm were excluded. Descriptive/simple comparative statistics were used to describe/compare groups. 54,523 women met study inclusion criteria. 956 (2%) experienced burn violence. Women who experienced burn violence had a younger median [IQR] age (36 [27,48] vs 47 [32,61],p<0.0001), were Black/African American (44.5% vs. 22.4%,p< 0.0001), were covered by Medicaid (38.8% vs. 21.6%,p< 0.0001), had a higher median [IQR] %TBSA extent (6.0% [3,15.2] vs. 3.0% [1,7.3],p< 0.0001), a higher proportion with 3rd degree burns (35.4% vs. 28.9%,p<0.0001), and a higher proportion with TBSA >20% (18.2% vs. 6.7%,p<0.0001). Scald/flame injuries were the most frequent mechanism of injury. Women who experienced violence had a higher median [IQR] length of hospital stay (7.0 [2,18] vs. 4.0 [1,11] days, p< 0.0001), ICU stay (8.5 [2,27] vs. 4 [2,13] days,p< 0.0001), and mortality rate (5.7% vs 4.3%,p<0.04). The frequency of women who sustained burn violence appears small yet experience worse outcomes. Clinicians should be aware of these demographic/clinical characteristics to provide optimal care to this vulnerable population.

Gender-based violence (GBV) and, more specifically, violence against women (VAW) are commonly considered a consequence of a patriarchal structure-a social system granting the senior male absolute authority over the family and the community as a whole. Anthropologists have documented that human male dominance is rooted in evolution, with male violent behavior observed among the great apes. Given that evolution is a continuous process, human progress over millennia has modified pre-existing behavior, demonstrating that humans can move beyond ancestral ways of life over time. Precisely because of the imperative to change and improve, at the global international level as well as in individual countries, strong movements are in action to eliminate GBV/VAW. FIGO has been and continues to be at the forefront of the battle for equality, with initiatives that cover many aspects of this, including the imperative to involve men, who-in the majority of cases-are the perpetrators. Since men are often the root of the problem, they must also be at the forefront of the battle to eradicate it. GBV/VAW comprises many facets, including selective female abortion, infanticide, femicide, honor killing, female genital mutilation, and child marriage. These deeply rooted forms of violence continue to perpetuate gender inequalities, remain major obstacles to health and societal progress, and violate the most basic human rights.

The appeal of transgender pornography, especially involving "pre-op"(erative) trans women, has steadily increased placing it in the top six most searched categories. In this paper I explore one unconscious function of the "pre-op" trans woman sexual fantasy that I have observed in some young heterosexual gynandromorphophilic men (i.e., men sexually drawn to the MtF "pre-op" body) who use transgender pornography and/or escorts. In contrast to a psychoanalytic reading of gynandromorphophilia in which the "pre-op" trans woman's body is understood to be "missing nothing" because she has breasts and a penis, I suggest that what is psychically compelling and sexually arousing for some men is quite the opposite: because the "pre-op" trans woman has a penis, she therefore has no vagina/womb. It is the triumph over what is missing and that should be there. The penis in lieu of the vagina/womb is evidence of her damaged procreative potential. In these cases, I propose that the sexual preference exposes the man's underlying womb envy. The "pre-op" trans woman is projectively identified with a felt-to-be "infertile" part of the man. The phantasized damaged woman's procreative body temporarily relieves the man of his sense of inadequacy and anxieties about his capacity to create and enliven. I illustrate this dynamic with clinical examples.

BACKGROUND: Estrogen secretion by the ovaries regulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis during the reproductive cycle, influencing gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion, and also plays a role in regulating metabolism. Here, we establish that hypothalamic tanycytes-specialized glia lining the floor and walls of the third ventricle-integrate estrogenic feedback signals from the gonads and couple reproduction with metabolism by relaying this information to orexigenic neuropeptide Y (NPY) neurons. METHODS: Using mouse models, including mice floxed for Esr1 (encoding estrogen receptor alpha, ERα) and those with Cre-dependent expression of designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADDs), along with viral-mediated, pharmacological and indirect calorimetric approaches, we evaluated the role of tanycytes and tanycytic estrogen signaling in pulsatile LH secretion, cFos expression in NPY neurons, estrous cyclicity, body-weight changes and metabolic parameters in adult females. RESULTS: In ovariectomized mice, chemogenetic activation of tanycytes significantly reduced LH pulsatile release, mimicking the effects of direct NPY neuron activation. In intact mice, tanycytes were crucial for the estrogen-mediated control of GnRH/LH release, with tanycytic ERα activation suppressing fasting-induced NPY neuron activation. Selective knockout of Esr1 in tanycytes altered estrous cyclicity and fertility in female mice and affected estrogen's ability to inhibit refeeding in fasting mice. The absence of ERα signaling in tanycytes increased Npy transcripts and body weight in intact mice and prevented the estrogen-mediated decrease in food intake as well as increase in energy expenditure and fatty acid oxidation in ovariectomized mice. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings underscore the pivotal role of tanycytes in the neuroendocrine coupling of reproduction and metabolism, with potential implications for its age-related deregulation after menopause. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Our investigation reveals that tanycytes, specialized glial cells in the brain, are key interpreters of estrogen signals for orexigenic NPY neurons in the hypothalamus. Disrupting tanycytic estrogen receptors not only alters fertility in female mice but also impairs the ability of estrogens to suppress appetite. This work thus sheds light on the critical role played by tanycytes in bridging the hormonal regulation of cyclic reproductive function and appetite/feeding behavior. This understanding may have potential implications for age-related metabolic deregulation after menopause.

A high prevalence of low energy availability (LEA) has been reported in female football players. This is of concern as problematic LEA may evolve into a syndromic pattern known as relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs). Given the difficulties in accurately assessing LEA, our study shifts emphasis to measurable indicators of REDs, serving as proxies for health detriments caused by LEA. The present cross-sectional study aimed to quantify the risk of REDs and to assess the prevalence of indicators indicative of the syndrome. 60 players (tiers 3 and 4) from three Norwegian football teams were analyzed as a single cohort but also stratified based on player position and menstrual status. The proportion of players at risk for REDs was 22%, that is, 17% with mild, 3% with moderate to high, and 2% with very high/extreme risk, respectively. The majority of the cohort (71%) presented with no primary indicators, while 20%, 7%, and 2% presented with one, two, and three primary indicators, respectively. Regarding secondary indicators, 57% had none, 33% had one, and 10% had two indicators. For associated indicators, 30% had none, 42% had one, 18% had two, 8% had three, and 2% had four indicators. Player position did not affect the prevalence of REDs indicators. Among noncontraceptive users (n = 27), secondary amenorrhea (AME) was reported by 30%. These findings indicate that health and performance teams should prioritize universal health promoting strategies rather than selective or indicative strategies. Particularly, focus on nutritional periodization to secure sufficient energy availability, mitigating the risk of problematic LEA and REDs should be addressed.

BACKGROUND: Female breast cancer stands as the prime type of cancer in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), with a high incidence and mortality rates. This study assessed the burden of female breast cancer in KSA by analyzing and forecasting its incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). METHODS: We retrieved data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) about female breast cancer from 1990 to 2021. Time-series analysis used the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to forecast female breast cancer statistics from 2022 to 2026. RESULTS: From 1990 to 2021, KSA reported 77,513 cases of female breast cancer. The age groups with the highest number of cases are 45-49 years, followed by 40-44 years, 50-54 years, and 35-39 years. The analysis also showed fewer cases in the younger age groups, with the lowest number in the less than 20-year-old age group. From 1990 to 2021, KSA reported 19,440 deaths due to breast cancer, increasing from 201 cases in 1990 to 1,190 cases in 2021. The age-standardized incidence rate/100,000 of breast cancer increased from 15.4 (95% confidence interval (CI) 11.2-21.0) in 1990 to 46.0 (95%CI 34.5-61.5) in 2021. The forecasted incidence rate of female breast cancer will be 46.5 (95%CI 45.8-46.5) in 2022 and 49.6 (95%CI 46.8-52.3) in 2026. The age-standardized death rate per 100,000 Saudi women with breast cancer increased from 6.73 (95%CI 6.73-9.03) in 1990 to 9.77 (95%CI 7.63-13.00) in 2021. The forecasted female breast cancer death rate will slightly decrease to 9.67 (95%CI 9.49-9.84) in 2022 and to 9.26 (95%CI 8.37-10.15) in 2026. DALYs increased from 229.2 (95%CI 165.7-313.6) in 1990 to 346.1 (95%CI 253.9-467.2) in 2021. The forecasted DALYs of female breast cancer will slightly decrease to 343.3 (95%CI 337.2-349.5) in 2022 reaching 332.1 (95%CI 301.2-363.1) in 2026. CONCLUSIONS: Female breast cancer is still a significant public health burden that challenges the health system in KSA, current policies and interventions should be fashioned to alleviate the disease morbidity and mortality and mitigate its future burden.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder cancer ranks 17th in prevalence of cancer types among women, and the trend is rising. The increased risk of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) after radical cystectomy (RC) underscores the need for greater focus on preserving and mitigating FSD. OBJECTIVES: To place greater emphasis on the importance of female sexual function (FSF) in the treatment of bladder cancer and stimulate additional research to discover more effective solutions for enhancing the overall quality of life. METHODS: This review used a narrative approach. Previous reviews on FSF after RC have provided limited and 1-sided solutions due to the lack of research. What makes this review unique is its innovative approach: it includes all available measures curing FSD as well as comparative analyses based on experimental data, thus making the findings more comprehensive. A detailed perspective of treatments for female bladder cancer is provided, including nerve- and organ-sparing RC, robot-assisted RC, and radiotherapy. We also analyze the impact of treatments for female bladder cancer on postoperative FSD. Additionally, solutions for addressing or alleviating postoperative FSD are summarized, such as urinary diversion, vaginal reconstruction, and drug and nondrug treatment. RESULTS: Research has suggested that robot-assisted nerve- and organ-sparing RC is promising. Moreover, orthotopic neobladder among urinary diversions without a stoma helps to maintain a positive female body image. If part of the anterior vaginal wall must be removed during RC, vaginal reconstruction can restore the dimensions with synthetic grafts and biologic scaffolds. Additionally, postoperative measures, such as vaginal laser and hormone therapy, and use of vaginal dilators and lubricants have a significant role in reducing distress caused by FSD to provide maximum relief. CONCLUSIONS: To support FSF after RC, various interventions are needed, and urologists must focus on patient recovery while minimizing treatment impact on FSF as much as possible.

BACKGROUND: Efficacy assessments in clinical trials of treatments for female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD) and other female sexual dysfunction (FSD) diagnoses rely on various patient-reported outcomes (PROs). AIMS: We sought to compare 1-month recall PRO measures among participants enrolled in a clinical trial who provided these data without (test population) vs with (control population) use of an at-home, 24-hour recall electronic diary (eDiary), capturing similar data. METHODS: Preplanned subset analysis as performed during a phase 2b, exploratory, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study of sildenafil cream, 3.6% (sildenafil cream) among healthy premenopausal women with FSAD. Preliminary product efficacy was assessed via 1-month recall and 24-hour recall questionnaires. A subset of the participants, the Evaluation of Recall Subset [ERS] provided PROs via the 1-month recall instruments but did not provide data via the 24-hour recall eDiary. OUTCOMES: Responses to the 1-month recall instruments were compared among ERS (test) vs non-ERS (control) participants. Among the non-ERS population, correlations between 1-month and 24-hour recall endpoints were calculated. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in the study co-primary 1-month recall efficacy endpoints, the Arousal Sensation (AS) domain of the 28-item Sexual Function Questionnaire (SFQ28) and the Female Sexual Distress Scale - Desire, Arousal, Orgasm question 14, among ERS vs non-ERS participants during the initial 1-month no-drug run-in period or the 1-month single-blind placebo run-in period (P values > .47). Scores on these 1-month recall PROs continued to be similar after randomization for sildenafil cream (P values > .30) and placebo cream (P values > .20) assigned ERS and non-ERS participants during the 3-month double-blind dosing period. There were strong correlations between the SFQ28 AS and eDiary AS scores during the no-drug run-in (R = 0.79, P < .01) and the single-blind run-in (R = 0.73 P < .001). During the double-blind dosing period, the SFQ28 AS score continued to be highly correlated with the eDiary AS score among sildenafil cream users (R = 0.83; P < .001) and placebo cream users (R = 0.8; 2 P < .001). CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: There was no evidence that 1-month recall PRO instruments introduce recall bias; assessing arousal sensations with 24-hour vs 1-month PRO instruments is similar and either method could be used to assess efficacy depending on study objectives. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: This preplanned subset analysis compared efficacy of PROs based on recall duration. While the subset was preplanned, the study was powered to detect significant differences in the primary efficacy objectives, not among this subset analyses. CONCLUSION: These data will be used in planning future efficacy assessments of sildenafil cream for FSAD. KEY MESSAGE: Lipoxygenase activity and localization vary throughout the development of Larix kaempferi ovules, with the highest enzyme activity observed in ovules at the cellular stage and the most intense immunogold reaction noted at the mature archegonium stage of gametophyte development. Lipoxygenases are a family of oxidoreductases with a significant role in biological systems, widespread in living organisms e.g. mammals, fish, corals, plants, mosses, algae, fungi, yeasts, and bacteria. Lipoxygenase activity in plants leads to the formation of phytooxylipins, i.e. signaling molecules, which play a crucial role in many significant physiological processes such as male and female gametophyte maturation, germination and seedling growth, pathogen resistance, abiotic stress response, fruit ripening, and senescence. The activity and localization of lipoxygenase change during plant growth and development. The localization of lipoxygenase in a developing ovule of Larix kaempferi was analyzed using the immunogold labeling method, and the activity was determined spectrophotometrically with linolenic acid as a substrate. Among the investigated stages, the immunogold reaction was the most intense at the mature archegonium stage in the ovule. Lipoxygenase was found in all parts of the L. kaempferi ovule. The largest number of immunogold particles was detected in the integument cells of all the analyzed stages of ovule development. Only one isoform of lipoxygenase with an optimum at pH 8 was active in the ovules during female gametophyte maturation. The highest enzyme activity was determined at the cellular stage, whereas the mature archegonium stage was characterized by its lowest level, which means that LOX activity in developing ovules of the Japanese larch is not correlated with the number of antibody-labeled molecules of the enzyme.

Melatonin is an indolamine secreted to circulation by the pineal gland according to a circadian rhythm. Melatonin levels are higher during nighttime, and the principal function of this hormone is to organize the temporal night and day distribution of physiological adaptive processes. Besides hormonal pineal production, melatonin is synthesized in various organs and tissues like the ovaries or the placenta for local utilization. In addition to its function as a circadian messenger, melatonin is also associated with many physiological functions. For example, melatonin has antioxidant properties and is involved in the regulation of energy and bone metabolism, and reproduction. Melatonin impacts several stages of reproduction and the action across the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis is well described. However, it is not well understood how those actions impact the female reproductive hormones secretion nor the consequent physiological outcomes. Thus, the first part of this chapter describes the regulation of female reproductive hormone synthesis by melatonin. Moreover, melatonin and female reproductive hormones have coincident physiological functions. Life stages like pregnancy or menopause are characterized by alterations in the reproductive hormones secretion that may be associated with certain physiological stages. Therefore, the second part discusses whether melatonin fluctuations could have an overlapping role with reproductive hormones in contributing to clinical outcomes associated with pregnancy and menopause.

BACKGROUND: Mobile Link is a mobile phone-based intervention to increase access to, and use of, health care services among female entertainment workers in Cambodia who face higher risks for specific diseases and gender-based violence. A multisite randomized controlled trial showed that Mobile Link connected female entertainment workers with outreach workers for information and escorted referrals after 6 months but did not lead to statistically significant improvements in HIV and sexually transmitted infection testing, contraceptive use, and condom use. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to conduct a 3-part economic evaluation of Mobile Link to understand its costs, value, and affordability. METHODS: We conducted cost, cost-effectiveness, and budget impact analyses of Mobile Link using cost and outcomes data from the Mobile Link trial and other sources. For the cost analysis, we estimated the total, per-person, and incremental costs of Mobile Link compared with usual care. Using probabilistic decision-analytic models, we estimated the 1-year cost-effectiveness of Mobile Link from payer and combined payer and patient perspectives by converting selected primary and secondary outcomes from the trial to disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) averted. Finally, we estimated the financial costs of scaling up Mobile Link's messaging and outreach services to 70% of female entertainment workers in 5 years. RESULTS: The incremental costs of Mobile Link were US $199 from a payer perspective and US $195 per person from a combined payer and patient perspective. With an average of 0.018 (95% predicted interval -0.088 to 0.126) DALYs averted, Mobile Link's cost-effectiveness was US $10,955 per DALY from a payer perspective (US $10,755 per DALY averted from a payer and patient perspective). The costs of Mobile Link would have to decrease by 85%, or its effectiveness would have to be 5.56 times higher, for the intervention to meet the upper limit of recommended cost-effectiveness thresholds in Cambodia (US $1671 per DALY averted). The 5-year cost of scaling Mobile Link to 34,790 female entertainment workers was estimated at US $1.64 million or US $46 per person per year. CONCLUSIONS: This study provided a comprehensive economic evaluation of Mobile Link. We found that Mobile Link is not likely to be cost-effective unless its costs decrease or its effectiveness increases. Scaling up Mobile Link to more female entertainment workers is estimated to cost less than the costs of the trial. Given the importance of linking female entertainment workers to essential services, future research should focus on enhancing the effectiveness of Mobile Link or developing new mobile health interventions for this population. Background and Objectives: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common issue for females undergoing gynecological surgeries, including those assisted by robotic systems. Despite available prophylactic measures, the incidence of PONV remains high, negatively impacting recovery and increasing healthcare costs. This study evaluates whether preoperative gum chewing reduces the need for anti-emetic drugs in females undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery for benign ovarian mass. Materials and Methods: This prospective, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial enrolled 92 adult females scheduled for robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery to treat benign ovarian mass. Following exclusions, the remaining participants were randomly assigned to either a gum-chewing group or a no-gum-chewing group. The gum-chewing group chewed sugar-free gum for 15 min in the holding area before surgery. The primary outcome measured was the need for anti-emetics to control PONV during the first hour in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Secondary outcomes included the number of anti-emetic requests. No preemptive anti-emetics were administered during surgery. Results: Out of the initial 92 patients, 88 were included in the final analysis, with 44 in each group. The incidence of PONV requiring anti-emetics in the PACU was significantly lower in the gum-chewing group (79.5%) compared to the no-gum-chewing group (95.5%). Additionally, the number of anti-emetic requests was higher in the no-gum-chewing group. No postoperative complications such as tooth or jaw pain/injury or gastric content regurgitation were reported. Conclusions: Preoperative gum chewing for 15 min immediately before surgery significantly reduced the incidence of PONV in females undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery for benign ovarian mass. This simple, non-pharmacological intervention improved patient comfort and reduced the need for anti-emetic medications without any adverse effects. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings and to develop guidelines for incorporating preoperative gum chewing into clinical practice.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCY: Chaihushugan san (CSS), a classic formula for soothing the liver and relieving depression, has been identified to produce rapid antidepressant-like effects in female mice. However, the gender predominance and underlying mechanisms of CSS's antidepressant remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: In this study, we focused on unraveling the gender predominance of CSS in antidepressant and the specific neuronal mechanisms that mediate this predominance. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Tail suspension test (TST), forced swimming test (FST) and sucrose preference test (SPT) were used to evaluate depressive phenotypes or antidepressant-like effects of CSS in female and male chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mice model. RNA-sequencing was used to screen specific target for CSS antidepressant gender dominance. RT-PCR and elisa were used to detect the expressions of specific molecule, hormones, and inflammatory factors in the hippocampus. hippocampal viral overactivation and pharmacological blockade were used to detect the correlation between CSS antidepressant gender dominance and related targets. RESULTS: In the present study, both female and male mice displayed depressive phenotypes including significant increasing immobility time in TST and reducing sucrose preference ratio in SPT after exposing CUMS for 3 weeks. However, acute administration of CSS (2, 4 g/kg) improved the depressive phenotypes only in female mice or not male mice at 2 h later. Moreover, the expressions of TC2N were increased only in female mice after exposing CUMS for 3 weeks, which were also reversed by CSS after a single administration 2 h later, but no alterations in male mice. The hippocampal expressions of estrogen receptor ß (Erß), pro-inflammatory factors (IL-1ß and TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory factors (IL-10, TGF-ß and IL-1Rα) were all abnormal in female CUMS mice model, which were all normalized by CSS. Furthermore, overactivation of hippocampal TC2N by AAV-TC2N+/+ blocked the antidepressant-like effects of CSS and the up-regulation of hippocampal Erß in female mice. However, inhibition of Erß blunted the antidepressant-like effects of CSS and CSS's suppression of pro-inflammatory factors (IL-1ß and TNF-α), which had no any effect on hippocampal TC2N and anti-inflammatory factors (IL-10 and TGF-ß). CONCLUSIONS: The study revealed that CSS had antidepressant superiority in female mice depending on inhibiting hippocampal TC2N and then activating Erß, further inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory factors to produce antidepressant effects, which provided a basis for the guidance of CSS in clinical application, new ideas and targets for the development of drugs for depression with gender differences.

Lymantria xylina Swinhoe (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) is a potentially invasive pest, similar to Lymantria dispar asiatica Vnukovskij and Lymantria dispar japonica Motschulsky (Lepidoptera: Erebidae). To evaluate its potential for spread and flight distance related to egg deposition on vessels at ports, we employed a flight mill to assess the flight capabilities of its adults under varying conditions. Our findings revealed that females primarily flew short distances and ceased flying after 3:00 AM, whereas males covered much longer distances throughout the day. Sex, age, and flight duration significantly influenced flight ability. Females exhibited weaker flight capability than males, and their ability declined with increasing age or flight duration. Notably, 1-day-old moths displayed the strongest flight ability, with average flight distances of up to 3.975 km for females and 8.441 km for males. By the fifth day, females no longer flew, and males experienced reduced flight ability. After continuous hanging for 16 h, females lost most of their flight capacity, while males remained capable of flight even after 32 h. Additionally, female flight ability decreased significantly after mating, possibly due to factors such as egg-carrying capacity, weight, and load ratio. This study provides a foundation for assessing the risk of long-distance dispersal of L. xylina via ocean-going freighters, considering female moths' phototactic flight and oviposition.

Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) encompasses a range of distressing symptoms in the vulvovaginal and/or bladder-urethral regions related to menopause changes, negatively influencing woman's quality of life and sexual activity. Fractional micro-ablative CO2 laser therapy has shown the potential to reinstate the vaginal epithelium to a condition akin to the premenopausal state, thereby ameliorating the subjective symptoms associated with GSM. We conducted a prospective, pilot study in 73 sexually active postmenopausal women treated with CO2 laser for their GSM symptoms, while assessing Vaginal Health Index Score (VHIS) and sexual function through the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) Questionnaire. The laser treatment resulted in a decrease in VHIS and patient-reported vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) symptoms, with a significantly lower prevalence of vaginal itching, dryness, and burning (p < 0.001), as well as dyspareunia (p = 0.002). The occurrence of urinary incontinence, urgency, and vaginal heaviness significantly reduced, with an improvement in the staging of cystocele, either to Stage 1 or complete resolution (p < 0.001). FSFI total and domain scores were significantly higher after the treatment, indicating better sexual function, with a post-treatment score median of 25 (p < 0.001). Therefore, using a three-cycle fractional CO2 laser was an effective choice for reducing urogenital discomfort related to GSM in postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis remains a significant global public health issue, and female sex workers (FSWs) are highly vulnerable to the etiological agent of this disease. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of exposure to Treponema pallidum, as well as the vulnerability factors among FSWs in the state of Pará, Brazilian Amazon. METHODS: A cross-sectional, retrospective study involving 360 FSWs from five cities in Pará was conducted from 2005 to 2007. Blood samples were collected for treponemal and non-treponemal testing, and epidemiological information was obtained through interviews. RESULTS: The exposure rate to T. pallidum was 37.7% (136/360), and the majority of FSWs had serological results indicating past exposure (21.1%). Among the FSWs exposed to T. pallidum, most of them were single, aged 23 to 42 years old, had less than 8 years of schooling, and had a family income of between 1 and 3 minimum wages. They reported using condoms during sexual intercourse and had no history of sexually transmitted infection (STI). Furthermore, many of the FSWs exposed to T. pallidum reported having more than 20 sexual partners per month, and had partners from other Brazilian states, but not from other countries. An age over 42 years and a reduced level of education were factors associated with exposure to T. pallidum. Finally, a high rate of exposure to T. pallidum among FSWs in the Brazilian state of Pará (from 2005 to 2007) was detected. In later years, epidemiological studies conducted with FSWs recorded that this rate remained high. Measures to control, treat, and prevent syphilis among FSWs were necessary between 2005 and 2007, and they are still imperative today. Actions related to educational programs and STI control, treatment, and prevention measures contained in Brazilian policies aimed at women's health have not changed the vulnerability scenario of FSWs regarding their exposure to T. pallidum, even after 16 years, and must be reviewed and adapted to the conditions of the Brazilian Amazon.

Breaking is a performative art that has recently undergone a process of sportification, developing into an aesthetic sport included in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Despite its growing worldwide popularity, there is a lack of research on Breaking. Accordingly, this pilot study's aim was twofold: (a) to provide an initial understanding of the anthropometric measures, body composition data, somatotype profiles, and strength performance of male (B-boys) and female (B-girls) Italian Breakers divided into elite (international) and sub-elite (national) levels and (b) to guide further research on the area, providing the methodological approach for future investigations. A total of 24 B-boys (elite n = 5; sub-elite n = 19) and 9 B-girls (elite n = 3; sub-elite n = 6) were included in this study. Descriptive analyses revealed that B-boys and B-girls displayed low height and weight (1.70 m (63.8 kg) and 1.58 m (54.2 kg), respectively), low levels of body fat percentages (10.3% and 17.6%, respectively), and a balanced mesomorph somatotype (2.28-4.64-2.69 and 2.34-5.16-2.38, respectively), revealing a marked development of muscular mass. Due to the small sample size, Welch's test and correlation analyses did not report any elite vs. sub-elite difference. It was hypothesized that Breakers' morphological profiles result from the selection procedures and training regimens related to Breaking aesthetic, athletic, and physiological demands.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Age-related decline in the number of ovulations and ovum quality are major causes of female infertility, and stem cells have been reported to be effective in tissue regeneration. However, current therapeutic modalities are inadequate. This study investigated the effects of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) on ovarian functions in aged mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following the characterization of ASCs using flow cytometry, the effects of ASCs on the number of ovulations, fertilization rate, and blastocyst-formation rate were investigated. In addition, the number of ovarian follicles and serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were examined. ASCs marked with Kusabira Orange were used to examine the location after cell administration. The quality of ovulated oocytes was analyzed using next-generation RNA sequencing. RESULTS: ASCs showed characteristics of mesenchymal stem cells and were distributed to various organs, including the ovarian stroma. The transplantation resulted in increased number of oocytes and ovulation in the ovaries and increased AMH values. Genetic analysis revealed improved oocyte quality and increased fertilization and blastocyst-formation rates. CONCLUSION: ASC therapy may be effective in improving fertility in older women.
