RESUMO

Fluorescence-based LB (liquid biopsy) offers a rapid means of detecting cancer non-invasively. However, the widespread issue of sample loss during purification steps will diminish the accuracy of detection results. Therefore, in this study, we introduce a magnetic lanthanide sensor (MLS) designed for sensitive detection of the characteristic protein, epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), on epithelial tumor exosomes. By leveraging the inherent multi-peak emission and time-resolved properties of the sole-component lanthanide element, combined with the self-ratiometric strategy, MLS can overcome limitations imposed by manual operation and/or sample complexity, thereby providing more stable and reliable output results. Specifically, terbium-doped NaYF4 nanoparticles (NaYF4:Tb) and deformable aptamers terminated with BHQ1 were sequentially introduced onto superparamagnetic silica-decorated Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Prior to target binding, emission from NaYF4:Tb at 543 nm was partially quenched due to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from NaYF4:Tb to BHQ1. Upon target binding, changes in the secondary structure of aptamers led to the fluorescence intensity increasing since the deconfinement of distance-dependent FRET effect. The characteristic emission of NaYF4:Tb at 543 nm was then utilized as the detection signal (I1), while the less changed emission at 583 nm served as the reference signal (I2), further reporting the self-ratiometric values of I1 and I2 (I1/I2) to illustrate the epithelial cancerous features of exosomes while ignoring possible sample loss. Consequently, over a wide range of exosome concentrations (2.28 × 102-2.28 × 108 particles per mL), the I1/I2 ratio exhibited a linear increase with exosome concentration [Y(I1/I2) = 0.166 lg (Nexosomes) + 3.0269, R2 = 0.9915], achieving a theoretical detection limit as low as 24 particles per mL. Additionally, MLS effectively distinguished epithelial cancer samples from healthy samples, showcasing significant potential for clinical diagnosis.

Rare earth (RE)-doped CaS phosphors have been widely used as light-emitting components in various fields. Nevertheless, the application of nanosized CaS particles is still significantly limited by their poor water resistance and weak luminescence. Herein, a lattice-matching strategy is developed by growing an inert shell of cubic NaYF4 phase on the CaS luminescent core. Due to their similarity in crystal structure, a uniform core-shell heterostructure (CaS:Ce3+@NaYF4) can be obtained, which effectively protects the CaS:Ce3+ core from degradation in aqueous environment and enhances its luminescence intensity. As a proof of concept, a label-free aptasensor is further constructed by combining core-shell CaS:Ce3+@NaYF4 and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the ultrasensitive detection of kanamycin antibiotics. Based on the efficient FRET process, the detection linear range of kanamycin spans from 100 to 1000 nM with a detection limit of 7.8 nM. Besides, the aptasensor shows excellent selectivity towards kanamycin antibiotics, and has been successfully applied to the detection of kanamycin spiked in tap water and milk samples, demonstrating its high potential for sensing applications.

Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2NPs), calcium titanate (CaTiO3NPs) and yttrium oxide (Y2O3NPs) nanoparticles are prevalent in many industries, including food and medicine, but their small size raises concerns about potential cellular damage and genotoxic effects. However, there are very limited studies available on their genotoxic effects. Hence, this was done to investigate the effects of multiple administration of Ca(OH)2NPs, CaTiO3NPs or/and Y2O3NPs on genomic DNA stability, mitochondrial membrane potential integrity and inflammation induction in mouse brain tissues. Mice were orally administered Ca(OH)2NPs, CaTiO3NPs or/and Y2O3NPs at a dose level of 50 mg/kg b.w three times a week for 2 weeks. Genomic DNA integrity was studied using Comet assay and the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within brain cells was analyzed using 2,7 dichlorofluorescein diacetate dye. The expression level of Presenilin-1, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) genes and the integrity of the mitochondrial membrane potential were also detected. Oral administration of Ca(OH)2NPs caused the highest damage to genomic DNA and mitochondrial membrane potential, less genomic DNA and mitochondrial damage was induced by CaTiO3NPs administration while administration of Y2O3NPs did not cause any remarkable change in the integrity of genomic DNA and mitochondrial membrane potential. Highest ROS generation and upregulation of presenilin-1, TNF-α and IL-6 genes were also observed within the brain cells of mice administrated Ca(OH)2NPs but Y2O3NPs administration almost caused no changes in ROS generation and genes expression compared to the negative control. Administration of CaTiO3NPs alone slightly increased ROS generation and the expression level of TNF-α and IL-6 genes. Moreover, no remarkable changes in the integrity of genomic DNA and mitochondrial DNA potential, ROS level and the expression level of presenilin-1, TNF-α and IL-6 genes were noticed after simultaneous coadministration of Y2O3NPs with Ca(OH)2NPs and CaTiO3NPs. Coadministration of Y2O3NPs with Ca(OH)2NPs and CaTiO3NPs mitigated Ca(OH)2NPs and CaTiO3NPs induced ROS generation, genomic DNA damage and inflammation along with restoring the integrity of mitochondrial membrane potential through Y2O3NPs scavenging free radicals ability. Therefore, further studies are recommended to study the possibility of using Y2O3NPs to alleviate Ca(OH)2NPs and CaTiO3NPs induced genotoxic effects.

AIMS: Yttrium (Y) holds significant industrial and economic importance, being listed as a critical element on the European list of critical elements, thus emphasizing the high priority for its recovery. Bacterial strategies play a crucial role in the biorecovery of metals, offering a promising and environmentally friendly approach. Therefore, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms behind bacterial resistance, as well as the processes of bioaccumulation and biotransformation, is of paramount importance. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 207 Alphaproteobacteria strains from the University of Coimbra Bacteria Culture Collection were tested for Y-resistance. Among these, strain Mesorhizobium qingshengii J19 exhibited high resistance (up to 4 mM Y) and remarkable Y accumulation capacity, particularly in the cell membrane. Electron microscopy revealed Y-phosphate interactions, while X-ray diffraction identified Y(PO3)3·9H2O biocrystals produced by J19 cells. CONCLUSION: This study elucidates Y immobilization through biomineralization within phosphate biocrystals using M. qingshengii J19 cells.

BACKGROUND: The translucency of different zirconia generations at each time point after thermocycling aging is still lacking. METHODS: Four zirconia materials were used with a total of 60 samples produced from monolithic third generation (5Y) 5 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia polycrystalline ceramic and fourth generation zirconia (4Y) 4 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia polycrystalline ceramic, represented by [group1:[CM-5Y] Ceramill Zolid fx (3rd generation zirconia) (Amann Girrbach, Koblach, Austria), group 2:[CM-4Y] Ceramill Zolid HT + (4th generation zirconia) (Amann Girrbach, Koblach, Austria), group 3:[CC-5Y] Cercon XT/ML (Dentsply Sirona, Germany) (3rd generation), and group 4:[CC-4Y] Cercon HT/ML (Dentsply Sirona, Germany) (4th generation)]. The L*a*b* figures were measured by using a spectrophotometer at baseline and after 10,000, 30,000, and 50,000 cycles of thermocycling. At each interval, the translucency of the samples was estimated by using the translucency formula CIEDE2000. The Scheffe post-hoc compared differences among each of the four materials. The Repeated measures ANOVA tested the differences between the materials at each of the different thermocycling intervals (p < .001). Data analyses were evaluated at a significance level of p < .05 (CI 95%). RESULTS: Two-way ANOVA revealed that at baseline the third and fourth generation's zirconia showed statistically significant differences in translucency (P < .001). Translucency values at baseline and after thermocycling exhibited statistically significant changes (p = .003). At each of the time interval; CM-4Y had the highest translucency values followed by CM-5Y, CC-4Y and CC-5Y had the least translucency values. CONCLUSIONS: The third and fourth generations of zirconia displayed different translucencies. Thermocycling affected the translucency of both third and fourth generations of zirconia. At each of the time intervals group 2:[CM-4Y] had the highest TP followed by group1:[CM-5Y], while, group 3:[CC-5Y] and group 4:[CC-4Y] had the least TP.

This study presents the first data on REY (Rare Earth Elements plus Yttrium) in the aquifer of Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy). Patterns normalized to chondrites indicate strong water-rock interaction, facilitated by a slightly acidic pH resulting from the dissolution of magma-derived CO2. REY patterns provide insights into the processes of both mineral dissolution and the formation of secondary phases. The relative abundance of light to heavy rare earth elements is compatible with the prevailing dissolution of ferromagnesian minerals (e.g., olivine or clinopyroxenes), reinforced by its strong correlation with other proxies of mineral dissolution (e.g., Mg contents). Pronounced negative Ce anomalies and positive Y anomalies demonstrate an oxidizing environment with continuous formation of secondary iron and/or manganese oxides and hydroxides. The Y/Ho fractionation is strongly influenced by metal complexation with bicarbonate complexes, a common process in C-rich waters. In the studied system, the measured REY contents are always below the limits proposed by Sneller et al. (2000, RIVM report, Issue 601,501, p. 66) for surface water and ensure a very low daily intake from drinking water.

Highly polished 3, 4, and 5 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia and CAD/CAM composite resin samples were prepared, and the influence of surface roughness (Ra and Sa, 21 areas/group), wettability (contact angle and surface energy, 3 samples/group), and surface chemical composition (2 samples/group) on single-strain bacterial adhesion models (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus gordonii, and Streptococcus mutans) were compared via fluorescent staining with graphical analysis (21 areas/group). Statistical analysis was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk test followed by one-way analysis of variance with Tukey's test or the Kruskal-Wallis test with Dunn's test (α=0.05) and linear regression. For dental zirconia with the same surface roughness, the yttria content did not significantly influence the initial bacterial adhesion. However, higher bacterial adhesion was detected for the composite resin owing to its high C, O, and Si contents. There was no correlation between surface energy and bacterial adhesion for any bacterial strain (p<0.005).

Near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) thermometry is an emerging method for the noncontact measurement of in vivo deep temperatures. Fluorescence-lifetime-based methods are effective because they are unaffected by optical loss due to excitation or detection paths. Moreover, the physiological changes in body temperature in deep tissues and their pharmacological effects are yet to be fully explored. In this study, we investigated the potential application of the NIRF lifetime-based method for temperature measurement of in vivo deep tissues in the abdomen using rare-earth-based particle materials. ß-NaYF4 particles codoped with Nd3+ and Yb3+ (excitation: 808 nm, emission: 980 nm) were used as NIRF thermometers, and their fluorescence decay curves were exponential. Slope linearity analysis (SLA), a screening method, was proposed to extract pixels with valid data. This method involves performing a linearity evaluation of the semilogarithmic plot of the decay curve collected at three delay times after cutting off the pulsed laser irradiation. After intragastric administration of the thermometer, the stomach temperature was monitored by using an NIRF time-gated imaging setup. Concurrently, a heater was attached to the lower abdomens of the mice under anesthesia. A decrease in the stomach temperature under anesthesia and its recovery via the heater indicated changes in the fluorescence lifetime of the thermometer placed inside the body. Thus, NaYF4:Nd3+/Yb3+ functions as a fluorescence thermometer that can measure in vivo temperature based on the temperature dependence of the fluorescence lifetime at 980 nm under 808 nm excitation. This study demonstrated the ability of a rare-earth-based NIRF thermometer to measure deep tissues in live mice, with the proposed SLA method for excluding the noisy deviations from the analysis for measuring temperature using the NIRF lifetime of a rare-earth-based thermometer.

Development of restorative materials capable of mimicking optical and mechanical performance of natural teeth is a quest in aesthetic density. Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) ceramics represent one of the most popular choices for dental restorations, owing to their biocompatibility, white colour, and the possibility to use CAD-CAM technologies. In particular, YSZ doped with 3 mol. % yttria (3YSZ) is popular because it presents high strength. Nonetheless, the limited light transmission of commercially available high strength 3YSZ does not meet the requirements of highly aesthetic cases. On the other side, YSZ presenting a larger portion of yttria are more translucent but exhibit modest strength. Here, we report on fabrication of dense zirconia nanostructures in bulk form via conventional pressure-less sintering at temperatures down to 1100-1200 °C, achieving highly translucent and strong 3YSZ with significant opalescent behaviour. Both Hall-Petch and inverse Hall-Petch relationship were observed in 3YSZ samples with average grain size in the range of 250 nm and 55 nm, demonstrating the importance of grain size control to enhance both optical and mechanical properties of zirconia ceramics, simultaneously. Maximum biaxial strength of 1980 ± 260 MPa, in-line light transmission of 38% in the visible spectrum and opalescence approaching that of enamel were obtained at optimum grain size of 80 ± 5 nm. The notable optical properties are linked to the miniaturization of the residual pores and refinement of grain size towards the nanoscale while the superior mechanical strength is justified by the activation of different energy dissipation processes at nano and macroscale.

This study aimed to produces and characterize bovine hydroxyapatite (HA) bioceramic with 3Y-TZP addition and analyze different sintering curves. HA was extracted from bovine bones and nanoparticulated. HA discs (0, 1, 5 and 10 wt% 3Y-TZP) were subjected to uniaxial and isostatic pressing. Dilatometry analysis was performed and the groups were sintered using 3 different firing curves (conventional, 1300 °C; 2-step, 1292 °C; 2-step, 1420 °C). The samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), biaxial flexural strength (BFS), Vickers microhardness (VH) and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The dilatometry results signaled the need for sintering optimization in groups added with 3Y-TZP. XRD demonstrated the characteristic crystallographic peaks of HA in the pure groups and with 1% 3Y-TZP, and decomposition of HA into ß-TCP and formation of calcium zirconate in the groups with 5 and 10% 3Y-TZP. Considering each composition, the groups of pure HA (131.3 ± 13.5 MPa; 401 ± 12.7 GPa) sintered by the conventional curve and HA+1%3Y-TZP (145 ± 8.6 MPa; 507 ± 47.9 GPa), HA+5%3Y-TZP (68.1 ± 14.2 MPa; 183 ± 9.8 GPa) and HA+10%3Y-TZP (55.6 ± 5.1 MPa; 96.1 ± 7.64 GPa) sintered by the 2-step curve at 1420 °C, combined the best BFS and VH results. The addition of 1 wt% 3Y-TZP and optimization in the sintering process improved the mechanical and microstructural properties of HA bioceramics and maintenance of its crystalline characteristics. Refinement in material processing is necessary for the future use of this bioceramic in dentistry.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of the stability of oxygen vacancies on the low-temperature degradation (LTD) resistance of two kinds of commercial zirconia-based materials (3Y-TZP ceramics and Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composites) via the dielectric probing methods. METHODS: The commercial 3Y-TZP ceramics and Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composites were prepared via conventional solid-state methods. Density, phase content, microstructure, strain, and biaxial flexural strength (BFS) of two materials were investigated using Archimedes method, XRD, SEM, strain-electric field (S-E) loops and ball-on-ring methods, respectively. The concentration of oxygen vacancies before and after LTD of two materials were evaluated using dielectric probing and XPS methods. RESULTS: The XRD analysis revealed that compared to the 3Y-TZP ceramics, the Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composites showed better LTD resistance, without clear LTD. The greater LTD resistance for Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composites was associated with their stability of oxygen vacancies, by higher activation energy based on the dielectric measurements and XPS results. For the 3Y-TZP ceramics that underwent the tetragonal to the monoclinic phase transition during the LTD treatment, the concentration of their oxygen vacancies decreased after LTD. In addition, the Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composites exhibited higher flexural strength and potential fracture toughness based on the BFS testing and strain vs electric field measurement results, indicating a great potential for use in fixed restorative dental applications. SIGNIFICANCE: This work suggested the stability of oxygen vacancies played a key role in the resistance to LTD. Optimizing the stability of the oxygen vacancies is key to the development of more reliable zirconia- based dental biomaterials with greater resistance to LTD.

The quantification of microalgae cells is crucial for the treatment of ships' ballast water. However, achieving rapid detection of microalgae cells remains a substantial challenge. Here, we develop a new method for rapid and effective detection of microalgae concentration by utilizing upconversion nanoprobes (UCNPs) of NaYF4:Er3+,Tm3+. Three ligands, carboxylated methoxypolyethylene glycols with 5000 and 2000 molecular weights (mPEG-COOH-5, mPEG-COOH-2) and D-gluconic acid sodium salt (DGAS), were used to convert hydrophobic UCNPs into a hydrophilic state through modification. The results show that the mPEG-COOH-5 modified UCNPs present the highest stability in an aqueous solution. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements reveal the presence of a significant number of -COOH functional groups on UCNPs after the mPEG-COOH-5 modification. These -COOH groups enhance the hydrophilicity and biocompatibility of UCNPs. The soluble UCNPs were directly mixed with microalgae, and the upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra of the UCNPs were recorded immediately after thorough shaking. This greatly reduces the measurement time and could realize rapid onboard detection. In this sensing procedure, the UCNPs with red UCL functioned as energy donors, while microalgae with red absorption served as an energy acceptor. The UCL gradually diminishes with an increase in microalgae concentration based on the inner filter effect, thus establishing a relationship between UCL and microalgae concentration. The accuracy of the detection is further validated through the traditional microscope counting method. These findings pave the way for a novel rapid strategy to assess microalgae concentration using UCNPs.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of toothbrushing with conventional and whitening dentifrices on the color difference (ΔE00), gloss (Δgloss), and surface roughness (SR) of stained stabilized zirconia with 5 mol% of yttrium oxide (5Y-TZP) after polishing or glazing. METHODS: Specimens were divided into four groups (n=20): C (control), S (staining), SG (staining and glazing) and SP (staining and polishing). 50,000 toothbrushing cycles were performed with conventional (n=10) and whitening (n= 10) dentifrice slurries. The ΔE00 and Δgloss were measured using a spectrophotometer and CIEDE2000 system while SR was measured by laser confocal microscope. The ΔE00 and Δgloss data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVA, and SR data were analyzed using the linear repeated measures model, with Bonferroni's complementary test (α= 0.05). RESULTS: The ΔE00 values were beyond the acceptability threshold and no differences were found among the groups. There was no difference among groups to Δgloss after toothbrushing with conventional dentifrice while SP presented the highest values of Δgloss after toothbrushing with whitening dentifrice. Conventional dentifrice decreased the SR of stained groups and whitening dentifrice decreased SR of S and SG. The toothbrushing with conventional and whitening dentifrices promoted color difference, but did not impair gloss and surface roughness of stained 5Y-TZP. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Monolithic zirconia has been routinely used for esthetic restorations, however the type of finishing procedures that is carried out on it must be taken into consideration, in addition to the fact that brushing can influence the color difference of the material as well as interfere with surface roughness and gloss.

Dual/multimodal imaging strategies are increasingly recognized for their potential to provide comprehensive diagnostic insights in cancer imaging by harnessing complementary data. This study presents an innovative probe that capitalizes on the synergistic benefits of afterglow luminescence and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), effectively eliminating autofluorescence interference and delivering a superior signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, it facilitates deep tissue penetration and enables noninvasive imaging. Despite the advantages, only a limited number of probes have demonstrated the capability to simultaneously enhance afterglow luminescence and achieve high-resolution MRI and afterglow imaging. Herein, we introduce a cutting-edge imaging platform based on semiconducting polymer nanoparticles (PFODBT) integrated with NaYF4@NaGdF4 (Y@Gd@PFO-SPNs), which can directly amplify afterglow luminescence and generate MRI and afterglow signals in tumor tissues. The proposed mechanism involves lanthanide nanoparticles producing singlet oxygen (1O2) upon white light irradiation, which subsequently oxidizes PFODBT, thereby intensifying afterglow luminescence. This innovative platform paves the way for the development of high signal-to-background ratio imaging modalities, promising noninvasive diagnostics for cancer.

Background: This study aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser treatment in female patients with mild-to-moderate stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Methods: From July 2018 to June 2020, 72 female patients with mild-to-moderate SUI were enrolled in this study. A baseline assessment was conducted, which included a 1-hour pad test, the validated International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-UI-SF), postvoid residual (PVR) testing, pelvic organ prolapse quantification (POP-Q) testing, and a cough stress test. All patients underwent four sessions of Er:YAG laser treatment using a smooth mode. A reassessment was performed 6 months after treatment to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Er:YAG laser. Results: All patients completed four clinic visits, with a 1-month interval, and were followed up for a minimum of 6 months. No severe adverse reactions were observed during the treatment process. The 1-hour pad test revealed a significant reduction in urinary leakage from baseline (6.30 ± 1.06 g) to the 6-month follow-up (2.70 ± 0.96 g, p < 0.001), with 34 of 72 (47.22%) patients achieving negative results. The ICIQ-UI-SF score significantly decreased from baseline to 6 months (10.82 ± 1.38 to 2.96 ± 0.52, p < 0.001). PVR experimental results showed a significant decrease in residual urine volume after treatment (103.72 ± 8.61 mL to 43.86 ± 4.92 mL, p < 0.001). At the 6-month follow-up, hematoxylin and eosin staining results demonstrated that Er:YAG laser treatment significantly facilitated an increase in the thickness of squamous epithelial cells. The efficacy of Er:YAG laser treatment for SUI was 77.78% (56/72). Conclusions: Several objective and subjective assessments confirmed the safety and efficacy of vaginal smooth mode Er:YAG laser treatment for mild-to-moderate SUI during the 6-month follow-up period. Nonablative Er:YAG laser in the smooth mode is a viable treatment option for SUI patients.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The impact of different coloring liquid shades and dipping times on the color, transparency, and flexural strength of monolithic zirconia ceramics is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of different coloring liquid shades (A2, 3M2, and 5M2) and dipping times (no dipping, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, and 90 seconds) on the color difference (ΔE00), relative translucency parameter (ΔRTP00), and 3-point flexural strength (σ) of monolithic zirconia ceramics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Yttria-stabilized zirconia (3Y-TZP, 3 mol%) was cut into Ø16×1.2-mm plates (n=10) and 25×4×1.2-mm bars (n=15), which were colored using 3 shades of coloring liquid at 4 dipping times. Color coordinates were measured on a gray background by using a digital spectrophotometer with an integrating sphere attachment. The color and translucency differences were evaluated using 50:50% perceptibility (PT00 and TPT00) and acceptability (AT00 and TAT00) thresholds. The 3-point flexural strengths of the bar-shaped specimens were measured using a universal testing machine and analyzed using the Weibull distribution to calculate the Weibull modulus (m) and characteristic fracture strength (σ0). The data were analyzed with the 2-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and LSD post hoc tests (α=.05). RESULTS: Both shade and dipping time significantly affected the color and translucency of monolithic zirconia (P<.001). The ΔE00 was above the PT00 for all groups, with only 3M2-90 and A2-60 being below the AT00. The main cause of color differences was the difference in lightness. Only A2 showed ΔRTP00 below the TPT00 (A2-30 (ΔRTP00=0.26), A2-60 (ΔRTP00=0.29), and A2-90 (ΔRTP00=0.46)). All experimental groups showed translucency differences below TAT00. In addition, only the dipping time had a significant effect on the flexural strength of zirconia (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: The optical properties of monolithic zirconia ceramics were affected by the shade and dipping time of the coloring liquid. The mismatch in lightness was the main reason for the color difference. The dipping time affects the flexural strength of monolithic zirconia, whereas the shade of the coloring liquid did not seem to influence flexural strength.

Laser lithotripsy is gaining global prominence and is a dynamically progressing field marked by a continual influx of new and comprehensive research each year. Recently, there has been a noticeable shift toward the adoption of various kinds of lasers, such as holmium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Ho:YAG) and thulium fiber (TFL) lasers. Consequently, we aim to conduct a bibliometric analysis to analyze key areas of research activity within scientific publications that center on the utilization of laser techniques in urolithiasis. A search of the literature spanning from 1978 to 2022 was carried out on 25 December 2023 using the Scopus database to explore research related to the application of laser techniques for urolithiasis treatment. Visualization analysis was performed using VOSviewer software (version 1.6.20). We examined 962 publications that met the specified criteria, 791 (82.22%) of which were original articles. The analysis of the retrieved publications indicated a consistent increase in research output from 1978 to 2022; a particularly noteworthy surge occurred after 2003. In particular, the U.S. claimed the leading position as the most productive country, contributing 211 articles (21.93%). However, India had the highest research productivity according to the adjustment index of 19.08. In the European region, 324 publications (33.68% of the total) originated from 25 countries. The Journal of Endourology contributed the most between 1978 and 2022 (n = 96, 9.98%). The most cited paper examined the effectiveness of holmium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Ho:YAG) lasers, while a subsequent study focused on the use of a thulium fiber laser (TFL), an emerging laser technology that has gained increased recognition. Co-occurrence analysis revealed three distinct clusters focusing on the types of laser technology, minimally invasive approaches, and success rate/postoperative complications. This comprehensive investigation delves into the global landscape of laser use for the treatment of urolithiasis. This review supports the emerging clinical concept of using various types of laser technology for urolithiasis treatment. Moreover, the hot issues that researchers should focus on based on the findings of this study are the use of different types of laser lithotripsy in view of the surgical approach, success rate and complications.

Objective: This in vitro study evaluates the shear bond strength (SBS) of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) and resin cement after different surface treatments. Materials and methods: Forty-eight ceramic cubes were divided into four groups (n = 12): G1 (control) sandblasting with Al2O3; G2-sandblasting with silica-coated Al2O3 (Rocatec); G3-Rocatec + CO2 laser; and G4-CO2 laser + Rocatec. A metallic primer was applied to the pretreated ceramic. A rubber ring was adapted on the central area, and then, the resin cement was inserted into the matrix and photoactivated. The samples were evaluated regarding surface roughness (Ra), SBS, failure type, and qualitatively with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey's test (p < 0.05). Results: The mean values of Ra (µm) were as follows: G1-4.52a, G2-4.24a,b, G3-4.10a,b, and G4-2.90b and the mean values of SBS (MPa) were as follows: G1-7.84a , G2-4.41b , G3-4.61b and G4-6.14a,b. SEM analyses showed superficial irregularities for all groups, being more prominent for G1. The presence of silica deposits was observed for G2, G3, and G4, but in the last two groups there were some linear areas, promoted by the fusion of silica, due to the thermomechanical action of the CO2 laser. Conclusions: The surface treatment with CO2 laser + Rocatec, using one MDP-based cement, can be an alternative protocol for the adhesion cementation of Y-TZP ceramic since it was as effective as the conventional pretreatment with aluminum oxide sandblasting.

The present study reports the preparation of crystalline and nanosized copper ferrite (CuFe2O4), Y3+ substituted CuFe2O4 (CuFe1.95Y0.05O4), and Sm3+ substituted CuFe2O4 (CuFe1.95Sm0.05O4) using a simple co-precipitation method. The XRD analysis confirmed the formation of the cubic spinel phase, while XPS studies validated the presence of Cu and Fe in 2+ and 3+ oxidation states respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed the nanoparticles with a diameter in the range of 10-60 nm. The introduction of fractional amounts of Y3+ and Sm3+ ions in the CuFe2O4 lattice enhanced the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, attributed to decreased particle size facilitating the reduction process. In the case of antimicrobial activity, Candida albican was found to be maximally sensitive to CuFe2O4 and CuFe1.95Y0.05O4, while Pseudomonas aeruginosa was inhibited by CuFe1.95Sm0.05O4. Moreover, a maximum of 61.9 ± 1.91 % anti-Pseudomonas biofilm activity and 75.7 ± 1.28 % DPPH radical scavenging activity was observed for CuFe1.95Y0.05O4 at 200 µg/ml concentration. The improvement in biological activities was attributed to the reduced particle size, crystal structure modification, and increased stability of the CuFe2O4 lattice with substitution. The enhancement in catalytic and biological performance highlighted the effectiveness of minimal Y3+ and Sm3+ concentrations in modulating the properties of CuFe2O4 nanomaterials.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the content of rare earth elements(REs)in blood and hair of residents in a RE mining area in Northwest Hubei, and evaluate the impact of REs on the health status of local residents. METHODS: A total of 191 residents from the core area of RE mining areas and 186 residents from non RE mining areas, aged 20-69, were selected. The content of REs in the blood and hair of the survey subjects was measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and compared with existing literature values. At the same time, blood tests and questionnaire surveys will be conducted on the health status of residents to examine whether human RE enrichment can lead to endemic diseases. RESULTS: The average total content of REs in the blood of residents in the mining area was 60.22 ng/mL, which was 3.35 times that of the control area; The average total content of REs in hair was 1197.91 ng/g, which was 6.32 times higher than the control area. As age increasing, the abundance of REs in the blood and hair of both men and women in mining areas increased. The proportion of Yttrium and Scandium in the blood and hair were much higher than that in the soil. Compared to hair, Yttrium and Scandium were more easily enriched in the blood. There was no significant difference in the probability of fatty liver, hepatitis B, hypoglycemia, hypotension, hypertension and heart disease and the average life span between residents in RE mining areas and those in the control area. CONCLUSION: The high daily average dietary intake of REs in residents leads to a relatively large accumulation of REs in human blood and hair, but no significant and substantial human health damage has been found at present.
