RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) on pelvic floor muscle (PFM) function and quality of life (QoL) in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). METHODS: This study will be a randomized, controlled, parallel, and blinded clinical trial. The final sample will consist of 32 women diagnosed with SUI and cystocele (stage I and II). All volunteers will be assessed and reassessed using the same protocol: assessment form, gynecological examination, functional evaluation of PFM, and questionnaires to assess quality of life, urinary function, and sexual function. All volunteers will be evaluated for satisfaction levels post-treatment. The intervention will be PFMT, totaling 16 sessions to be conducted twice a week. Reevaluation will take place at the end of treatment and 1 month after completion of PFMT. Descriptive analysis and repeated measures ANOVA will be used for result analysis. A significance level of p<0.05 will be considered for all statistical tests. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study has been submitted to the Ethics in Research Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte and approved under protocol number 5.826.563. It has been registered with the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry ReBec (RBR-49p6g3t). It is expected that these studies will provide a deeper understanding of the efficacy of PFMT in women with SUI and cystocele. Additionally, it aims to provide more insights into the efficacy of PFMT prior to surgery.

Urinary incontinence is a common complication in stroke survivors for whom new interventions are needed. This study investigated the therapeutic effect of low-frequency (LF) repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on the contralesional primary motor cortex (M1) in patients with poststroke urinary incontinence (PSI). A total of 100 patients were randomly assigned to the rTMS group or sham-rTMS group on basis of the intervention they received. Both groups underwent five treatment sessions per week for 4 weeks. Data from the urodynamic examination were used as the primary outcome. The secondary outcome measures were questionnaires and pelvic floor surface electromyography. After 4 weeks of intervention, the maximum cystometric capacity (MCC), maximum detrusor pressure (Pdet.max), residual urine output, overactive bladder score (OABSS) (including frequency, urgency, and urgency urinary incontinence), and the ICIQ-UI SF improved significantly in the rTMS group compared with those in the sham-rTMS group (P < 0.05). However, no changes in pelvic floor muscle EMG were detected in patients with PSI (both P > 0.05). Our data confirmed that 4 weeks of LF-rTMS stimulation on the contralateral M1 positively affects poststroke urinary incontinence in several aspects, such as frequency, urgency urinary incontinence, MCC, end-filling Pdet, OABSS, and ICIQ-UI SF scores.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of electric stimulation and biofeedback therapy in patients with postpartum pelvic organ prolapse and to identify factors that can affect therapeutic efficacy outcomes. METHOD: This retrospective study analysed clinical data about patients with postpartum pelvic organ prolapse. A total of 328 women with pelvic organ prolapse at 6 weeks postpartum were recruited from one tertiary hospitals in Sichuan province in China, between March 2019 and March 2022. The prognostic factors of therapeutic efficacy were analysed using logistic regression and decision tree model. RESULTS: Overall, 259 women showed clinical benefits from the treatment. The logistic regression model showed that parity, pelvic floor muscle training at home, and the pelvic organ prolapse quantitation stage before treatment were independent prognostic factors. The decision tree model showed that the pelvic organ prolapse quantitation stage before treatment was the main prognostic factor, followed by parity. There was no significant difference in the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve between the two models. CONCLUSION: Parity, pelvic floor muscle training at home, and the pelvic organ prolapse quantitation stage before treatment were important prognostic factors of electric stimulation and biofeedback therapy on postpartum pelvic organ prolapse.

To investigate the effects of health education combined with biofeedback electrical stimulation on maternal postpartum pelvic floor function and psychology. The clinical data of 80 patients with postpartum pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) from May 2020 to May 2022 were selected as retrospective study subjects, and 40 cases were divided into the comparison group and the observation group according to the different intervention methods. Among them, the comparison group implemented biofeedback electrical stimulation and guidance, and the observation group implemented Greene health education and Kegel pelvic floor rehabilitation training intervention based on the comparison group. The differences in pelvic floor muscle strength, sexual quality of life, anxiety, and depression in the 2 groups with postpartum PFD were compared. Comparison of pelvic floor muscle strength: before the intervention (P > .05) and after the intervention, the anterior resting mean electromyography (EMG), slow muscle mean EMG, fast muscle maximum EMG, and mixed muscle mean EMG values of patients in the observation group were higher than those in the comparison group, and the posterior resting mean EMG values were lower than those in the comparison group (P < .05). There was no statistically significant difference in the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores and anxiety and depression subscale scores between the 2 groups of patients before intervention (P > .05). After the intervention, the HADS scores and anxiety and depression subscale scores were lower than those before the intervention in both groups, and the differences were statistically significant in the intervention group than in the comparison group (P < .05). There was no statistically significant difference between The Chinese Female Sexual Life Quality Questionnaire scores of both groups before the intervention (P > .05). Sexual desire, vaginal lubrication, sexual arousal, sexual satisfaction, orgasm, and painful intercourse improved in both groups after the intervention, and the scores in the intervention group were higher than those in the comparison group (P < .05). Health education combined with biofeedback electrical stimulation can effectively improve the quality of patients' sexual life, improve the pelvic floor muscle strength of patients with postpartum PFD, enhance patients' confidence, reduce patients' anxiety and depression, and effectively improve patients' psychological status.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study is to compare the thickness of the transverse abdominis, internal oblique, external oblique, rectus abdominis, and rectus abdominis distance, the quality of life (SF-36), the presence of chronic pelvic pain (CPPQ-Mohedo), and sexual dysfunction (IIEF) in men who practice CrossFit® versus men who do not. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Sixty-four healthy men with an average age of 37.19 were recruited at a private sports club and divided into two groups for this cross-sectional observational study. Additionally, participants completed the CPPQ-M, IIEF, and SF-36 questionnaires. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in the thickness of the internal oblique at rest (p = 0.018, d = 0.61), which was greater in the CrossFit® group. In the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire (p = 0.05, d = 0.50), the CrossFit® group also obtained a higher score. CONCLUSION: CrossFit® improves the quality of life and self-esteem of the participants, in addition to increasing the thickness of the internal oblique. Neither more chronic pelvic pain nor more erectile dysfunction was observed in the CrossFit® group.

BACKGROUND: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a distressing condition that affects approximately 25-80% of patients following surgery for rectal cancer. LARS is characterized by debilitating bowel dysfunction symptoms, including fecal incontinence, urgent bowel movements, and increased frequency of bowel movements. Although biofeedback therapy has demonstrated effectiveness in improving postoperative rectal control, the research results have not fulfilled expectations. Recent research has highlighted that stimulating the pudendal perineal nerves has a superior impact on enhancing pelvic floor muscle function than biofeedback alone. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a combined approach integrating biofeedback with percutaneous electrical pudendal nerve stimulation (B-PEPNS) in patients with LARS through a randomized controlled trial (RCT). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In this two-armed multicenter RCT, 242 participants with LARS after rectal surgery will be randomly assigned to undergo B-PEPNS (intervention group) or biofeedback (control group). Over 4 weeks, each participant will undergo 20 treatment sessions. The primary outcome will be the LARS score. The secondary outcomes will be anorectal manometry and pelvic floor muscle electromyography findings and the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Colorectal 29 (EORTC QLQ-CR29) scores. Data will be collected at baseline, post-intervention (1 month), and follow-up (6 months). DISCUSSION: We anticipate that this study will contribute further evidence regarding the efficacy of B-PEPNS in alleviating LARS symptoms and enhancing the quality of life for patients following rectal cancer surgery. OBJECTIVES: To systematically evaluate the therapeutic effect of electrical stimulation combined with pelvic floor muscle exercise on female pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD). METHODS: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) was applied. A computer-based retrieval was performed in the databases of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library from database establishment to September 15, 2023, to identify randomized controlled trials on electrical stimulation combined with pelvic floor muscle function exercise on female PFD. Literature screening, data extraction, and quality evaluation were performed independently by two researchers, and meta-analysis was performed using the statistical software Stata15.0. RESULTS: 1. In total, 12 randomized controlled trials were included, involving 721 female patients. The overall quality of methodologies employed in the included studies was relatively high. 2. Meta-analysis results showed that electrical stimulation combined with pelvic floor muscle exercise could effectively mitigate the severity of female PFD (SMD = -1.01, 95% CI - 1.78, - 0.25, P < 0.05). 3. This combination treatment demonstrated a significant positive effect on the improvement of pelvic floor muscle strength in female patients (P < 0.05); however, it had no significant effect on the improvement in quality of life (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with pelvic floor muscle exercise alone, electrical stimulation combined with pelvic floor muscle exercise could effectively mitigate the severity of female PFD. It had a notable positive impact on enhancing pelvic floor muscle strength in female patients, although it did not significantly improve quality of life. Future high-quality studies are warranted.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the predictive value of preoperative pelvic floor electromyography (EMG) parameters for the risk of urinary incontinence after prostate cancer surgery. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 271 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy in the urology department of Peking University First Hospital from January 2020 to October 2022. The data included patient age, body mass index (BMI), international prostate symptom score (IPSS), prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, Gleason score, type of surgery, urethral reconstruction, lymph node dissection, nerve preservation, catheterization duration, D ' Amico risk classification, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score, Charlson comorbidity index, postoperative duration, prostate volume, and pelvic floor EMG parameters (pre-resting mean, fast muscle mean, and slow muscle mean scores). Independent risk factors affecting early postoperative urinary incontinence were identified through multivariate Logistic regression analysis. The predictive efficacy of pelvic floor EMG results was evaluated by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and the optimal threshold for early postoperative urinary incontinence was determined based on the Youden index and clinical significance. RESULTS: The study included 271 prostate cancer patients, with an 81.9% rate of voluntary urinary control post-surgery. The median score for fast pelvic floor muscles was 23.5(18.2, 31.6), and for slow muscles, it was 12.5(9.6, 17.3). Among the patients, 179 (66.1%) did not preserve nerves, and 110 (40.6%) underwent urethral reconstruction. Advanced age and low fast muscle scores were identified as independent risk factors for urinary incontinence. Patients aged ≤60 had 5.482 times the voluntary urinary control rate compared with those aged ≥70 (95%CI: 1.532-19.617, P < 0.05). There was a significant correlation between fast muscle scores and urinary incontinence recovery (OR=1.209, 95%CI: 1.132-1.291, P < 0.05). When the optimal threshold for preoperative fast muscle score was set at 18.5, the ROC sensitivity and specificity were 80.6% and 61.2%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Preoperative pelvic floor EMG parameters show good predictive accuracy and clinical applicability for the risk of urinary incontinence after prostate cancer surgery. These parameters can be used for early identification of urinary incontinence risk, with age and fast muscle scores being important predictors.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) and modified pilates exercises (MPE) in elderly women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). STUDY DESIGN: Both randomized groups [Group 1: PFMT (n = 17), Group 2: MPE (n = 17)] performed their exercises twice a week for 12 weeks. Incontinence Severity Index (ISI), Urogenital Distress Inventory-Short Form (UDI-6) and Incontinence Impact Questionnaire-Short Form (IIQ-7) were used to assess SUI frequency and level of exposure from symptoms, electromyography (EMG) device was used to assess PFM activation response and a stabilizer was used to assess transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle strength. The assessments were performed at baseline and at week 12. RESULTS: While in-group assessment there were statistically significant differences in ISI, UDI-6, IIQ-7 in both groups at week 12 (p < 0.05); in the assessment between groups, there were statistically significant difference for EMG-work avarage (U = 60.00, P = 0.02), EMG-work peak (U = 62,50, P = 0.03) and EMG-rest peak (U = 61,50, P = 0.03) in favor of Group 1 and TrA muscle strength (U = 61.00, P = 0.02) in favor of Group 2 from baseline to week 12 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In summary, MPE can be considered alternative and safe exercise in clinic for elderly women with SUI who do not want to receive PFMT for various reasons.

AIM: To adapt and determine the validity and reliability of the Indonesian version of the Australian Pelvic Floor Questionnaire (APFQ). METHODS: The original APFQ was translated and validated to obtain an Indonesian, physician-administered version on 41 urogynecology patients and 41 age-matched women without pelvic floor dysfunction. RESULTS: Missing answers never exceeded 2%. The questionnaire can significantly discriminate between pelvic floor dysfunction patients and those without dysfunctions. The results of each domain of the questionnaire correlated with clinical examinations and another questionnaire. Cronbach's alpha scores of all domains were 0.859 for bladder function, 0.829 for bowel function, 0.892 for prolapse symptoms, and 0.766 for sexual function. CONCLUSION: The Indonesian version of the Australian Pelvic Floor Questionnaire (APFQ) is a valid and reliable questionnaire for assessing pelvic floor symptoms among women in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal laxity (VL) is a complaint of excessive vaginal looseness with a prevalence ranging from 24% to 38% across studies. AIM: The study sought to compare the effect of radiofrequency (RF) and pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) on the treatment of women with VL. METHODS: From February 2020 to December 2021, a prospective, parallel, noninferiority, randomized clinical trial was carried out in women ≥18 years of age and complaining of VL in a tertiary hospital. Two groups (RF and PFMT) were evaluated at the beginning of the study and 30 days and 6 months postintervention. A total of 42 participants per arm was sufficient to demonstrate a difference in sexual function on the Female Sexual Function Index at 90% power, 1-sided type 1 error of 0.025 with a noninferiority margin of 4 on the FSFI total score. Analysis was intention-to-treat and per-protocol based. OUTCOMES: The primary endpoint was the change of FSFI score after treatment, and the secondary outcomes were improvement in symptoms of VL and changes in questionnaire scores of sexual distress, vaginal symptoms, and urinary incontinence, in the quantification of pelvic organ prolapse, and pelvic floor muscle (PFM) contraction. RESULTS: Of 167 participants recruited, 87 were included (RF: n = 42; PFMT: n = 45). All questionnaires improved (P < .05) their total scores and subscales in both groups and during the follow-ups. After 30 days of treatment, RF was noninferior to PFMT to improving FSFI total score (mean difference -0.08 [95% confidence interval, -2.58 to 2.42]) in the per-protocol analysis (mean difference -0.46 [95% confidence interval, -2.92 to 1.99]) and in the intention-to-treat analysis; however, this result was not maintained after 6 months of treatment. PFM contraction improved significantly in both groups (RF: P = .006, 30 days; P = .049, 6 months; PFMT: P < .001, 30 days and 6 months), with better results in the PFMT group. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Sexual, vaginal, and urinary symptoms were improved after 30 days and 6 months of treatment with RF and PFMT; however, better results were observed in the PFMT group after 6 months. STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS: The present randomized clinical trial used several validated questionnaires evaluating quality of life, sexual function and urinary symptoms, in addition to assessing PFM contraction and classifying the quantification of pelvic organ prolapse aiming at anatomical changes in two follow-up periods. The limitations were the lack of a sham-controlled group (third arm) and the difficulty of blinding researchers to assess treatments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSION: After 30 days and 6 months of treatment, sexual, vaginal, and urinary symptoms improved with RF and PFMT; however, better results were observed in the PFMT group after 6 months. RF was noninferior to PFMT in improving FSFI total score after 30 days; however, this result was not maintained after 6 months of treatment.

Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is a common clinical problem that can lead to bladder and bowel dysfunction such as urinary incontinence, urinary retention, fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and sexual dysfunction. Pelvic floor rehabilitation aids are essential tools in the treatment of PFD. However, there is limited understanding of the efficacy and mechanisms of these aids, and there is a lack of standardized guidelines for selecting appropriate aids for different types of PFD. To assist patients in choosing suitable pelvic floor rehabilitation aids to their needs, it is necessary to summarize the existing types, mechanisms, and applications of these aids. Based on their mechanisms and target functions, pelvic floor rehabilitation aids can be mainly categorized into 3 main types. The first type includes aids that improve pelvic floor function, such as vaginal dumbbells, vaginal tampons, and vaginal dilators, which aim to strengthen pelvic floor muscles and enhance the contractility of the urethral, vaginal, and anal sphincters, thereby improving incontinence symptoms. The second type consists of aids that mechanically block the outlet, such as pessaries, urethral plugs, incontinence pads, incontinence pants, anal plugs, and vaginal bowel control systems, which directly or indirectly prevent incontinence leakage. The third type includes aids that assist in outlet drainage, such as catheters and anal excreta collection devices, which help patients effectively expel urine, feces, and other waste materials, preventing incontinence leakage. By summarizing the existing pelvic floor rehabilitation aids, personalized guidance can be provided to patients with PFD, helping them select the appropriate aids for their rehabilitation needs.

BACKGROUND: To use the three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound for assessment of pelvic floor muscle function in non-diabetic females with insulin resistance (IR), and to evaluate its functional relationship with insulin levels. METHODS: From October 2022 to November 2023, 216 non-diabetic females with insulin-resistant (IR group) and 118 normal females (control group) were sequentially recruited from our hospital for our study. The 3D ultrasound was used to assess the levator hiatus in resting state for all females regarding diameter lines, perimeters and areas; as well as the Valsalva manoeuvre (VM). The t-test and linear regression model were used to analyse the collected data. RESULTS: The analysis indicates that there were significant differences in the resting state of the levator hiatus between the IR and the control groups (14.8 ± 5.8 cm2 and 11.6 ± 2.7 cm2, p < 0.05); and in the VM (18.2 ± 6.3 cm2 and 13.4 ± 3. 4 cm2, p < 0.05). In addition, the anterior-posterior (AP) diameters of the hiatus on VM were significantly increased in the IR group (40.0 ± 4.7 mm and 33.0 ± 4.4 mm, p < 0.05). With insulin levels as the dependent variable, multivariate regression analysis shows that insulin levels were significantly correlated with the levator hiatus area on VM (p < 0.05) and waist circumference (p < 0.05). The pelvic organ descent on VM in the IR group was significant (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The areas of resting state levator hiatus and on VM were significantly larger in the IR than that in the control groups. In addition, the position of the pelvic organ on VM in the IR group was significantly descended. The insulin levels were correlated with the pelvic floor muscle function.


With regard to insulin resistance and pelvic floor function, previous studies focused on the role of polycystic ovaries, metabolic syndrome, and pelvic prolapse. The use of ultrasound can improve understanding of the static, dynamic and organ prolapse conditions. This study aimed to assess pelvic floor muscle function in non-diabetic women with insulin resistance, a condition where the body uses insulin less effectively. A total of 216 women with insulin resistance and 118 without it were examined using 3D ultrasound during rest and while performing the Valsalva manoeuvre. Our results show that the pelvic floor muscles had extra space between them and moved differently in women with insulin resistance than in those without the condition. This suggests that insulin resistance may affect function of pelvic floor muscles to cause adverse consequences.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the management strategies in the children who had treatment-resistant dysfunctional voiding (DV). METHODS: Among 75 children with DV who underwent pelvic floor biofeedback therapy (BF) between 2013 and 2020, 16 patients (14 girls, 87.5%) with a mean age of 9.81 ± 2.53 years that showed incomplete clinical response following urotherapy and initial BF sessions were retrospectively reviewed. The demographic and clinical characteristics, DVSS, and uroflowmetry parameters were recorded before and after the initial BF sessions. Subsequent treatments after initial BF and clinical responses of patients were noted. RESULTS: Clinical success was observed in one patient by addition of an anticholinergic and in three patients with combination of salvage BF sessions and anticholinergics, whom had predominant overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms. The success rate of TENS alone and in combination with other treatment modalities was 88.8% (8/9 patients). In addition, salvage BF sessions (range 2 to 3) enabled clinical success in five (50%) of 10 cases as a combination with anticholinergics or TENS. In case of incomplete emptying without OAB, adequate clinical response to Botulinum-A was observed during an average follow-up of 29 months in two boys who did not respond to alpha-blockers, even though one required repeat injection after 10 months. The total clinical success rate was 87.5% (14/16 patients) after a median follow-up of 24 months. VV-EBC and Qmax increased by a mean of 30.89% and 7.13 mL/min, respectively, whereas DVSS decreased by a mean of 8.88 points and PVR-EBC decreased by a median of 19.04%. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings showed that clinical success in resistant DV was achieved by various combination treatments in the majority of children. However, a small group may still have persistent, bothersome symptoms despite multiple treatment modalities.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review article, we discuss myofascial-related chronic pelvic pain, pathophysiology, symptomology, and management options. RECENT FINDINGS: Despite high prevalence of myofascial pelvic pain, screening is not routinely performed by providers. Treatment modalities include pelvic floor physical therapy, pelvic floor trigger point injections with anesthetics or botulinum toxin A and cryotherapy. Other adjunct modalities, such as muscle relaxants and intravaginal benzodiazepines, are used, but data regarding their effectiveness is sparse. SUMMARY: Myofascial pelvic pain is an important, though overlooked component of chronic pelvic pain. Multimodal, multidisciplinary approach including patient education, pelvic floor physical therapy, and trigger point injections is the mainstay of the management of myofascial pelvic pain.

BACKGROUND: A pragmatic randomised controlled trial has confirmed the effectiveness of Urinary Incontinence for Women (UIW) app-based intervention in improving postpartum urinary incontinence (UI) severity among pregnant women. However, the causal mechanisms underlying this intervention effect remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the mediating role of self-efficacy with pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) on the effect of the UIW app-based intervention in improving postpartum UI severity. METHODS: This was a secondary causal mediation analysis of a single-center, 2-arm, unblinded pragmatic randomised controlled trial. Singleton pregnant women without UI before pregnancy aged ≥18 years and between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation were recruited from a tertiary public hospital in China and randomised to receive the UIW app intervention plus oral PFMT instructions (n = 63) or oral PFMT instructions alone (n = 63). The primary outcome was postpartum changes in UI severity at 6 weeks. Changes in self-efficacy with PFMT 2 months after randomisation were a hypothesised mediator. Causal mediation analysis was used to estimate the average causal mediation effect (ACME), average direct effect (ADE), average total effect (ATE), and proportion mediated. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to examine the robustness of the ACME in relation to potential unmeasured confounding. RESULTS: Data from 103 participants were analyzed. The ATE of UIW app-based intervention on postpartum UI severity was 2.91 points (95 % confidence intervals [CI] 1.69 to 4.12), with ADE of 1.97 points (95 % CI 0.63 to 3.41) and the ACME 0.94 points (95 % CI 0.27 to 1.72). The proportion of ATE mediated by self-efficacy with PFMT was 0.32 (95 % CI 0.08 to 0.67). Sensitivity analysis revealed the robust ACME with respect to the potential effects of unmeasured confounding. CONCLUSION: An increase in self-efficacy with PFMT partially mediated the effect of the UIW app intervention on improvements in postpartum UI severity. BACKGROUND/AIM: Distal extremity misalignment may give rise to pelvic floor dysfunctions (PFDs). This study aimed to compare pelvic floor muscle strength (PFMS) and dysfunctions in women with and without pes planus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Women with (pes planus group, n = 30) and without pes planus (control group, n = 30) were included. The presence of PFDs questioned. Pes planus with the Feiss Line Test, PFMS with the Modified Oxford Scale, and the severity of PFDs with the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory-20 (PFDI-20), including three subscales (Pelvic Organ Distress Inventory-6 (POPDI-6) for pelvic organ prolapse, Colorectal-Anal Distress Inventory-8 (CRADI-8) for colorecto-anal symptoms, and Urinary Distress Inventory-6 (UDI-6) for urinary symptoms, were assessed. RESULTS: It was seen that no difference was found between groups in terms of PFMS (p > 0.05). However, urinary incontinence and anal incontinence were higher in women with pes planus than in women without pes planus (p < 0.05). Only the PFDI-20, CRADI-8, and UDI-6 scores were higher in women with pes planus compared to controls (p < 0.05). There was no difference was found between groups in terms of POPDI-6 scores (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The PFMS did not change according to the presence of pes planus. However, the prevalence of PFDs and their severity were higher in women with pes planus in comparison to controls. Posture assessments of individuals with PFDs, especially examination of foot posture, and pelvic floor assessments of individuals with posture disorders should be considered.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The primary aim was to examine the relationship between lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), toileting behaviors, and pelvic floor health knowledge in younger and older women. The secondary aim was to compare LUTS, toileting behaviors, and pelvic floor health knowledge in younger and older women. METHODS: The study included 85 younger women and 81 older women. LUTS were evaluated using the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Female LUTS (ICIQ-FLUTS), toileting behaviors using Toileting Behavior-Women's Elimination Behaviors (TB-WEB), and pelvic floor health knowledge using the Pelvic Floor Health Knowledge Quiz (PFHKQ). RESULTS: In terms of LUTS, the most common symptoms in younger women are urgency (31.8%), bladder pain (28.2%), and frequency of incontinence episodes (35.3%), whereas in older women, the most common symptoms observed are urgency (64.2%), frequency of incontinence episodes (61.7%), intermittency (46.9%), urgency urinary incontinence (58%), and frequency of incontinence episodes (49.4%). Most unhealthy toileting behaviors correlated with LUTS in both groups (p < 0.05). Although a weak negative correlation was detected between ICIQ-FLUTS total score and PFHKQ function in younger women (p < 0.05), no correlation was found in older women (p < 0.05). Whereas premature voiding, straining during voiding, TB-WEB total score were higher in older women than in younger women (p < 0.05), delayed voiding, position preference for voiding, and PFHKQ function/dysfunction scores were higher in younger women than in older women (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Within the scope of preventive health services, it may be important to provide informative programs on healthy toileting behaviors and pelvic floor health to women of all ages in order to prevent LUTS.
