RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Leadership is a critical competency for medical professionals, yet it is often neglected in medical training. For ObGyn residents, leadership training is particularly crucial as it significantly impacts both maternal and newborn outcomes, as well as the operational efficiency of healthcare teams. The main objective of this study was to assess the perceptions of obstetrics and gynecology residents who served as group leaders in the emergency team at the Department of Gynecology, Ward 3, Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi. METHODS: A Cross-sectional survey was conducted with purposively sampled 28 year-4 residents who worked as group leaders during last 3 years (from 2018 to 2020) of their residency program at the emergency team in the department of Gynecology Ward 3 Dr Ruth KM Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi. The perceptions on leadership were assessed on 25 items scale sent through a questionnaire on email. Grading of responses was done using a 4-point ordinal scale where 1 meant little importance and 4 was regarded as having great importance. Data was summarized with relevant descriptive statistics and was analyzed on SPSS version 22. RESULTS: The mean age of residents was 30.36. The mean leadership scores of the group of residents were calculated to be 77.50 (SD ± 9.57) while 14(50%) residents showed good and 14 (50%) showed excellent leadership skills based on cumulative scores. Of the 25 traits examined in this study, the highest reported trait was humility 3.82 (± 0.39) followed by empowerment 3.68 (± 0.77) and effective communication 3.68 (± 0.77). While responding about learning experiences, 89.3% of participants felt that the experience enhanced their decision-making skills and boosted their confidence in dealing with emergencies. CONCLUSION: Our study highlights the critical importance of leadership development in the training of ObGyn residents, particularly in high-pressure emergency settings. The findings reveal that residents value leadership traits such as humility, empowerment, and effective communication, which are essential for building teamwork and ensuring optimal patient outcomes and patient satisfaction.

RESUMO

AIM: To determine Croatian healthcare (HC) professionals' perspectives on HC management and leadership challenges. METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted between May and June 2021, enrolled 1179 respondents from both the public and private sector, including medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, economists, and other HC professionals. Their perspective on various facets of HC management, namely governance, ownership, accountability, financing, and potential for improvement, were investigated using an anonymous online survey. RESULTS: Most respondents agreed that the system may be allocating resources ineffectively and that political mandates unduly influenced management decisions, impeding accountability. Competencies in organizational and financial experience, along with communication and leadership skills, were deemed fundamental for health care managers. Participants overwhelmingly supported data-driven decision-making, improved education, and the development of leadership skills as key avenues for system enhancement. CONCLUSIONS: The study underscores the need for better financial management and overall governance, in the Croatian HC, offering insights that can inform evidence-based policy decisions and reforms toward a more efficient and accountable HC system.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Strategic leadership plays an important role in achieving organizational success in surviving and growing in a challenging business environment. This study aims to examine the role of strategic leadership in responding to a rare moment in the health industry, which is the combination of government regulations that tend to continue to change and the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A total of 358 respondents from 141 type C and D hospitals in Indonesia participated in this research. This study used six latent variables and 27 dimensions, processed using structural equation modeling. FINDINGS: The results of this study confirmed that resilient leaders will not seek new partners by developing network capabilities; but rather choose to save the hospital first, by resources reconfiguration as response to the unanticipated adversity caused by fusing the government regulation and emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This study makes an important contribution that enables hospital management to develop action plans in response to national health-care regulations coupled with the emergence and extension of the COVID-19 pandemic; as well as the results of the investigation into organizational resources, and to implement strategic resilience capability more effectively.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore and understand the leadership experiences of medical consultants prior to a major hospital move. Health and care is becoming increasingly complex and there is no greater challenge than the move to a new hospital. Effective leadership has been identified as being essential for successful transition. However, there is very little evidence of how medical consultants experience effective leadership. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A qualitative methodology was utilized with one-to-one semi-structured interviews conducted with ten medical consultants. These were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The research complied with the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ). FINDINGS: Four themes were found to influence medical consultants' experience of leadership: collaboration, patient centredness, governance and knowledge mobilization. Various factors were identified that negatively influenced their leadership effectiveness. The findings suggest that there are a number of factors that influence complexity leadership effectiveness. Addressing these areas may enhance leadership effectiveness and the experience of leadership in medical consultants. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS: This study provides a rich exploration of medical consultants' experience of collective leadership prior to a transition to a new hospital and provides new understandings of the way collective leadership is experienced in the lead up to a major transition and makes recommendations for future leadership research and practice. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The findings suggest that there are a number of factors that influence complexity leadership effectiveness. Addressing these areas may enhance leadership effectiveness and the experience of leadership in medical consultants. SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS: Clinical leadership is associated with better outcomes for patients therefore any interventions that enhance leadership capability will improve outcomes for patients and therefore benefit society. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This is the first research to explore medical consultants' experience of collective leadership prior to a transition to a new hospital.

RESUMO

Professional associations provide resources to support members' career development and facilitate ways for members to engage with and learn from one another. This article describes Medical Library Association (MLA) activities related to the revision of professional competencies and the restructuring of the organization's communities during the past twenty-five years. Grounded in MLA's Platform for Change, the MLA competency statement underwent two revisions with core themes remaining consistent. Major efforts went into rethinking the structure of MLA communities, and it became a strategic goal of the association. Numerous groups spent considerable time guiding the changes in MLA's community structure. Sections and special interest groups were transformed into caucuses. Domain hubs were established to facilitate project coordination across caucuses and create more leadership opportunities for MLA members, but their implementation did not meet expectations. Member engagement and leadership are ongoing challenges for MLA. The next twenty-five years will undoubtedly see additional revisions to the competencies and continued iterations of the community structure.

RESUMO

On the occasion of the Medical Library Association's 125th Anniversary, four librarian leaders with a combined 105 years of engagement in MLA collaborated to reflect on the changes in our profession and our association. We draw on an examination of the last 25 years of the MLA Janet Doe Lectures, our own personal histories, and scholarship we produced for MLA publications and presentations. We offer this compilation as an invitation for readers to reflect on their experiences of changes within the profession, inspiration to engage in the issues around our place in society, and a source for additional exploration into researching and learning from our collective history.

RESUMO

Thanks to their guidance and coaching skills, advanced practice nurses (APNs) support teams on a daily basis in improving their practices and developing their reflexivity. Their leadership enables caregivers to question themselves, exchange ideas and think about care from a different angle. Situational analysis sessions provide a space for them to step back, debate and innovate. This meaningful support enabled a newly-qualified IPA to find her place among the teams. Here's a testimonial.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Faith community nursing often is anchored in a community through local networks that support the development of both the ministry and the faith community nurse. Such local networks are established and sustained through the leadership of faith community nurses (FCNs). A research study interviewed nurses recognized as foundational to the development of FCNs in the United States from 1984 to 2000. The Waterwheel Model of Spiritual Leadership was used as a construct for interviewing 24 FCN leaders discovered through Delphi methodology. An adaptation of Colazzi's method of qualitative analysis was used to analyze data collected in videotaped format. Three predominant themes emerged that may be instrumental to developing future FCN leaders and growth of this specialty nursing practice.

RESUMO

The G4 Alliance and its member organizations formed a delegation that participated in the 76th World Health Assembly (WHA) in 2023, which unanimously adopted the resolution to address micronutrient deficiencies through safe, effective food fortification to prevent congenital disorders such as spina bifida and anencephaly, the first neurosurgery-led resolution since the founding of the World Health Organization. The WHA included other resolutions and side events by the G4 Alliance and other organizations relevant to neurosurgery. An opportunity exists for neurosurgeons to harness the momentum from this resolution to promote initiatives to prevent neurosurgical disease or expand access to neurosurgical care.

RESUMO

Employees' work engagement may vary by work location (office vs. home office), assuming that working at home requires greater self-regulation. Hence, self-leadership may play an important role when employees work at home. The present study investigates whether employees use self-leadership strategies (self-goal setting, self-reward, self-punishment, self-cueing, and visualization of successful performance) more often on home days than on office days. We also examine how these strategies are related to daily work engagement, and whether they are more effective for promoting work engagement depending on the work location. One hundred and one employees completed daily questionnaires on office and home days, resulting in 514 observations. Multilevel analyses revealed that employees reported higher use of self-goal setting, self-reward, and visualization on home days than on office days. Furthermore, we found that applying these strategies was positively related to day-specific work engagement. Nevertheless, self-cueing had no effect and self-punishment was detrimental to work engagement. Moreover, we found no support for the idea that the effectiveness of self-leadership strategies for promoting work engagement depends on the work location. These findings contribute to our understanding of self-leadership strategies promoting work engagement on home and office days.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In occupational therapy, leadership development is a fundamental skill and social process needed to advance the profession. However, there is scant literature on leadership development. Further examination of leadership development in the occupational therapy literature may provide helpful insights and strengthen the opportunity to study this concept and its efficacy. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: The focus of this concept analysis was to conduct a review of the historical and contemporary occupational therapy literature to evaluate how the profession distinguishes the concept of leadership development. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A principle-based concept analysis provides holistic perspectives of a concept by examining its historical and linguistic foundations. RESULTS: Dialogue about leadership development was primarily situated in grey literature with few articles found in empirical-focused, peer-reviewed journals. The analysis revealed that leadership development was understood as both a process and an outcome and was intended to support the promotion of the profession. CONCLUSION: Despite using similar language to describe the concept, the literature did not yield one cohesive definition of leadership development. SIGNIFICANCE: A definition was proposed that integrated the various perspectives to support future empirical research around a centralized understanding of the concept of leadership development.

The concept analysis revealed that occupational therapy leadership development is seen as a process and an outcome. Key themes from an epistemological perspective showed that leadership development is a social and mentored process and can be achieved through engagement in various strategies and contexts.Little empirical evidence exists on the outcome of leadership development strategies in occupational therapy, thus providing a challenge in operationalizing the concept. More research is needed to determine the outcome of occupational therapy leadership development approaches.Based on the existing literature, a theoretical definition of leadership development was proposed with the anticipation to serve as a basis for future research.

RESUMO

For one School of Nursing in a mid-sized, urban, private, liberal arts university in the upper Midwest, internal and external factors coalesced, requiring the reassessment/alignment of the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral programs with professional standards/competencies and institutional mission/values. The development process of a new curricular framework to conceptually support the curriculum within the School of Nursing was reflective of participatory inquiry. The process closely followed the principles of the nursing complexity leadership model, complexity science, and improvement science. The new curricular framework grounds the School of Nursing's programming in a shared mental model through three functional definitions and six guiding constructs. The curricular framework development from this collaborative effort provides consistency for future curricular development and design across and within each program in the School of Nursing, shaping who we are, who we are educating, and the vision we see for our future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mentoring in academic nursing facilitates the acclimation of nurse faculty into academia, supports career development, and improves faculty satisfaction and retention. While studies have examined the characteristics of effective mentors, few have examined institutional influences on academic mentoring for faculty. PURPOSE: To identify institutional factors that support or hinder faculty-to-faculty academic mentoring from the perspectives of experienced nurse faculty mentors. METHOD: A qualitative descriptive approach was used to identify institutional factors that impact academic mentoring. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with experienced nurse faculty (n = 24) about their mentoring experiences. Remarks related to institutional factors were analyzed using conventional content analysis. RESULTS: Five institutional factors that supported mentoring were identified: (1) support of unit leaders, (2) established processes and policies, (3) mentoring development opportunities, (4) faculty-to-faculty support, and (5) faculty rewards. Six institutional factors that hindered mentoring were identified: (1) lack of support of unit leaders, (2) limited mentoring development opportunities, (3) heavy workloads that restrict mentoring, (4) limited pool of mentors, (5) inadequate faculty rewards for mentoring, and (6) limited oversight of faculty mentoring. CONCLUSION: The identification of institutional factors that support or hinder mentoring can inform academic leaders and program administrators in their efforts to strengthen mentoring.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nursing leadership programs can have a positive impact on organizations and communities. Health equity in nursing requires leaders who parallel the population demographics. PURPOSE: This work evaluated the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Leadership Mentoring Program (LMP) 10 years from its inception. Lessons learned from this evaluation can inform leadership initiatives in nursing and other health professions. METHOD: This cross-sectional evaluation applied the Context, Inputs, Process, and Products model to gauge effectiveness of the LMP. All 48 participants were invited to participate. RESULTS: Thirty-two survey respondents, a 67 % response rate, demonstrated a 767 % increase in extramural scholarship collaborations and promotion to associate and full professor at 43 % and 90 %, respectively. Academic leadership positions to department chair, assistant/associate dean, and dean increased 200 %, 167 %, and 100 %, respectively. Seventy-seven percent of program participants are engaged on boards and committees at local, state, national, and international levels. These roles significantly impact legislative, policy, advocacy, and regulatory efforts, signifying the LMP's influence on broader societal and professional domains. CONCLUSION: Identifying clear program outcomes and metrics for leadership program evaluation can advance diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Sustainable funding models for leadership development will have a high return on investment for health professions.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: New graduate nurses are not always prepared for the challenges of the chaotic clinical environment or to exercise leadership skills in a clinical capacity. Resilience and self-care are essential facets of successful leadership, as well as necessary components to prevent burnout in nurses. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how this School of Nursing implemented approaches to prepare the next generation of nurses with strong skills in the areas of leadership, resilience, and self-care/well-being while addressing the Essentials. METHODS: Faculty explored new ideas, as well as showcased teaching strategies they had already successfully implemented, that aligned with the Essentials with the undergraduate baccalaureate pilot student cohort. RESULTS: Two "Essential" Competencies, Domain 9 Professionalism and Domain 10 Personal, Professional and Leadership Development, as well as related sub-competencies, were addressed by the thirteen teaching strategies. Anecdotal student reflection comments supported high levels of satisfaction with these strategies. CONCLUSIONS: Preparing student nurses to meet the Essentials is critical to helping nurses thrive in contemporary practice settings. Equipping a generation of nurses with self-care practices to protect their own well-being, while at the same time meeting the Essentials expectations, is crucial to cultivating a sustainable nursing workforce.
