RESUMO

The multi-soil-layering (MSL) systems is an emerging solution for environmentally-friendly and cost-effective treatment of decentralized rural domestic wastewater. However, the role of the seemingly simple permeable layer has been overlooked, potentially holding the breakthroughs or directions to addressing suboptimal nitrogen removal performance in MSL systems. In this paper, the mechanism among diverse substrates (zeolite, green zeolite and biological ceramsite) coupled microorganisms in different systems (activated bacterial powder and activated sludge) for rural domestic wastewater purification was investigated. The removal efficiencies performed by zeolite coupled with microorganisms within 3 days were 93.8% for COD, 97.1% for TP, and 98.8% for NH4+-N. Notably, activated sludge showed better nitrification and comprehensive performance than specialized nitrifying bacteria powder. Zeolite attained an impressive 89.4% NH4+-N desorption efficiency, with a substantive fraction of NH4+-N manifesting as exchanged ammonium. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that aerobic and parthenogenetic anaerobic bacteria dominated the reactor, with anaerobic bacteria conspicuously absent. And the heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) process was significant, with the presence of denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms (DPAOs) for simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal. This study not only raises awareness about the importance of the permeable layer and enhances comprehension of the HN-AD mechanism in MSL systems, but also provides valuable insights for optimizing MSL system construction, operation, and rural domestic wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), benzalkyl dimethylammonium compounds (BAC) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have negative effects on biological sewage treatment. The performance of nitrification systems under stress of PFOA (0.1-5 mg/L) or/and BAC (0.2-10 mg/L) was explored during 84-day experiments using four sequencing batch reactors, in this study. Low (0.1 mg/L) concentration PFOA had a positive influence on ammonia removal, while medium and high (2 and 5 mg/L) concentrations PFOA caused severe inhibition. Meanwhile, PFOA stress resulted in the enrichment of ARGs in water (w-ARGs). BAC (0-10 mg/L) had no obvious influence on ammonia removal. However, BAC promoted the reduction of ARGs and the bacterial community was the main participator (48.07%) for the spread of ARGs. Interestingly, the joint stress of PFOA and BAC increased the ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) activity from 5.81 ± 0.19 and 6.05 ± 0.79 mg N/(g MLSS·h) to 7.09 ± 0.87 and 7.23 ± 0.29 mg N/(g MLSS·h) in medium and high concentrations, compared to single stress of PFOA, which was observed for the first time. BAC could reduce bioavailability of PFOA through competitive adsorption and decreasing sludge hydrophobicity by the lower ß-Sheet and α-Helix in tightly bound protein. Furthermore, the joint stress of PFOA and BAC was able to intensify the proliferation of w-ARGs and extracellular ARGs in sludge, and developed the most active horizontal gene transfer mediated by intl1 compared to single stress of PFOA or BAC. The batch tests verified the detoxification capacity of BAC on nitrification under 2.5 mg/L PFOA (48 h exposing), and the maximum alleviation of AOB activity was achieved at BAC and PFOA mass ratio of 2:1. In summary, BAC could be used to alleviate the inhibition of PFOA on ammonia oxidation, providing an efficient and sustainable approach in wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

There are a large number of simple landfills in hilly areas, and the results of previous studies have shown that pollutants in landfills can spread via interflow and cause surface source pollution. The hybrid activated sludge-membrane aerated bioreactor (H-MABR) developed in a previous study can be used for the treatment of interflow with a low chemical oxygen demand (COD)/total nitrogen (TN) ratio, and it has been shown to be effective in laboratory simulations. To investigate the effectiveness of the H-MABR in treating interflow around landfills in real-world applications, an in-situ pilot-scale evaluation of the effectiveness of H-MABR operation was conducted at a landfill. The results indicated that the removal efficiencies of COD, TN, and ammonia nitrogen in interflow by H-MABR were 87.1 ± 6.0%, 80.9 ± 7.9%, and 97.9 ± 1.4%, respectively. The removal rate of TN reached 148.6-205.6 g-N/m3·d. The concentration of each pollutant in the effluent was in accordance with China's "Standard for pollution control on the landfill site of municipal solid waste (GB16889-2008)," wherein the COD, TN, and ammonia nitrogen of effluent should be less than 100 mg/L, 40 mg/L, and 25 mg/L, respectively. The results of community composition analysis and PICRUSt analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that there were different dominant functional bacteria between the inner and outer rings, but functional genes involved in the nitrification-denitrification, assimilated nitrate reduction, and dissimilated nitrate reduction pathway were all detected. Furthermore, except for the nitrite oxidation gene narG, the abundance of which did not significantly differ between the inner and outer rings, the abundance of the other functional genes was higher in the outer ring than in the inner ring. An economic evaluation revealed that the operation cost of interflow treatment by the H-MABR was as low as ¥2.78/m3; thus, the H-MABR is a shock-load-resistant and cost-effective technology for interflow treatment.

RESUMO

This study proposes an innovative strategy for achieving PN in synthetic domestic wastewater by side-stream sludge treatment using sulfide as the sole control factor. By conducting controllable batch experiments and response surface analysis, optimal sulfide treatment conditions were firstly determined as 90 mg/L of sulfide, 7.5 of pH, 100 rpm of rotation and 12 h of treatment time. After treatment, half of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) activity remained, but nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) activity was barely detected. Nitrite accumulation rate of long-term running PN steadily reached 83.9 % with 99.1 % of ammonia removal efficiency. Sulfide treatment increased community diversity and facilitated stability of microbiota functioning with PN phenotype, which might be sustained by the positive correlation between ammonia oxidation gene (amoA) and sulfur oxidation gene (soxB). Correspondingly, the network analysis identified the keystone microbial taxa of persistent PN microbiota as Nitrosomonas, Thauera, Truepera, Defluviimonas and Sulitalea in the later stage of long-term reactor.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency and reduce the start-up period of a single-stage partial nitritation-anammox (SPNA) system using iron particle-integrated anammox granules (IP-IAGs). Anammox granules were enriched in sequencing batch and expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors. The EGSB reactor produced larger and more uniform granules with higher specific anammox activity. IP-IAGs were then inoculated into a two-stage partial nitritation-anammox reactor treating anaerobic digestion (AD) effluent, followed by an internal recirculation strategy to acclimate the granules to oxygen exposure for SPNA. Finally, the SPNA process operated to treat real AD effluent under optimal conditions of 0.05 L/min aeration intensity (0.01 vvm) and 24 h of hydraulic retention time, achieving TNRE of 86.01 ± 2.64 % and nitrogen removal rate of 0.74 ± 0.04 kg-N/m3·d for 101 d.

RESUMO

The phytopromotional root endophytic fungus Piriformospora indica was introduced into the wetland plant Canna indica L. to explore its impact on nitrogen (N) removal in constructed wetlands (CWs) to treat normal and saline (0.9 % NaCl) wastewater. P. indica colonization increased total nitrogen, NH4+-N, and NO3--N removal efficiencies under normal and saline conditions, with NO3--N removal rates significantly increasing by 17.5 % under saline conditions (P<0.05). N removal by plant uptake improved by 26.1 % and 27.7 % under normal and saline conditions due to P. indica-mediated growth-promoting effects. Salt-tolerant denitrifiers and nitrifiers guaranteed the dominant role of microbial degradation in N removal under saline conditions. P. indica inoculation considerably improved the contribution of Nocardioides and Nitrosomnas to dissimilatory/assimilatory nitrate reduction and nitrification genes, respectively. These findings elucidate the mechanisms and potential applications of P. indica-mediated phytoremediation in practical wastewater treatment under varying salty conditions.

RESUMO

Heterotrophic nitrification (HN) bacteria use organic carbon sources to remove ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N); however, the mechanisms of carbon and nitrogen metabolism are unknown. To understand this mechanism, HN functional microbial communities named MG and MA were enriched with glucose and sodium acetate, respectively. The NH4+-N removal efficiencies were 98.87 % and 98.91 %, with 88.06 % and 69.77 % nitrogen assimilation for MG and MA at 22 h and 10 h, respectively. Fungi (52.86 %) were more competitive in MG, and bacteria (99.99 %) were dominant in MA. Metagenomic and metabolomic analyses indicated that HN might be a signaling molecule (NO) in the production and detoxification processes when MG metabolizes glucose (amo, hao, and nosZ were not detected). MA metabolizes sodium acetate to produce less energy and promotes nitrogen oxidation reduction; however, genes (hao, hox, and NOS2) were not detected. These results suggest that NO and energy requirements induce microbial HN.

RESUMO

A novel A. pittii J08 with heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) isolated from pond sediments could rapidly degrade inorganic nitrogen (N) and total nitrogen (TN-N) with ammonium (NH4+-N) preference. N degradation rate of NH4+-N, nitrite (NO2--N) and nitrate (NO3--N) were 3.9 mgL-1h-1, 3.0 mgL-1h-1 and 2.7 mgL-1h-1, respectively. In addition, strain J08 could effectively utilize most of detected low-molecular-weight carbon (LMWC) sources to degrade inorganic N with a wide adaptability to various culture conditions. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis revealed that assembled genome of stain J08 possessed the crucial genes involved in dissimilatory/assimilatory NO3--N reduction and NH4+-N assimilation. These results indicated that strain J08 could be applied to wastewater treatment in aquaculture.

RESUMO

In this study we employ computational methods to investigate the influence of aeration strategies on simultaneous nitrification-denitrification processes. Specifically, we explore the impact of periodic and intermittent aeration on denitrification rates, which typically lag behind nitrification rates under identical environmental conditions. A two-dimensional deterministic multi-scale model is employed to elucidate the fundamental processes governing the behavior of membrane aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs). We aim to identify key factors that promote denitrification under varying aeration strategies. Our findings indicate that the concentration of oxygen during the off phase and the duration of the off interval play crucial roles in controlling denitrification. Complete discontinuation of oxygen is not advisable, as it inhibits the formation of anaerobic heterotrophic bacteria, thereby impeding denitrification. Extending the length of the off interval, however, enhances denitrification. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the initial inoculation of the substratum (membrane in this study) influences substrate degradation under periodic aeration, with implications for both nitrification and denitrification. Comparison between continuous and periodic/intermittent aeration scenarios reveals that the latter can extend the operational cycle of MABRs. This extension is attributed to relatively low biofilm growth rates associated with non-continuous aeration strategies. Consequently, our study provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interplay between aeration strategies and simultaneous nitrification-denitrification in MABRs. The insights presented herein can contribute significantly to the optimization of MABR performance in wastewater treatment applications.

RESUMO

This study explored a novel economical and efficient process for treating actual low-ammonia nitrogen electroplating tail wastewater. A pilot scale system of denitrification-partial nitrification/anaerobic ammonium oxidation (DN-PN/A) was constructed and operated for 190 days. The partial nitrification (PN) reactor, filled with zeolite, increased free ammonia concentration beyond the nitrite oxidizing bacteria threshold and successfully supplied NO2--N, with nitrite accumulation rate exceeding 90 %. Over 109 days, the total nitrogen removal rate achieved was 80.2 ± 7.41 %, and the chemical oxygen demand removal rate reached 79.68 ± 9.53 %. The dominant functional bacteria were Nitrosomonas (5.45 %) and Candidatus Anammoxoglobus (28.84 %) in PN reactor and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) reactor. This process, characterized by rapid start-up, strong shock resistance, and low cost, alleviates the pressure of ammonium pollution control, promotes the sustainable development of the electroplating industry and has the potential for application in the treatment of other industrial wastewater.

RESUMO

Agriculture receives approximately 25 % of the annual global nitrogen input, 37 % of which subsequently runs off into adjacent low-order streams and surface water, where it may contribute to high nitrification and nitrous oxide (N2O). However, the mechanisms of nitrification and the pathways controlling N2O production in agricultural streams remain unknown. Here, we report that the third microbial ammonia oxidation process, complete ammonia oxidation (comammox), is widespread and contributes to important ammonia oxidation with low ammonia-N2O conversion in both basin- and continental-scale agricultural streams. The contribution of comammox to ammonia oxidation (21.5 ± 2.3 %) was between that of bacterial (68.6 ± 2.7 %) and archaeal (9.9 ± 1.8 %) ammonia oxidation. Interestingly, N2O production by comammox (18.5 ± 2.1 %) was higher than archaeal (10.5 ± 1.9 %) but significantly lower than bacterial (70.2 ± 2.6 %) ammonia oxidation. The first metagenome-assembled genome (MAG) of comammox bacteria from agricultural streams further revealed their potential extensive diverse and specific metabolism. Their wide habitats might be attributed to the diverse metabolism, i.e. harboring the functional gene of nitrate reduction to ammonia, while the lower N2O would be attributed to their lacking biological function to produce N2O. Our results highlight the importance of widespread comammox in agricultural streams, both for the fate of ammonia fertilizer and for climate change. However, it has not yet been routinely included in Earth system models and IPCC global assessments. Synopsis Widespread but overlooked comammox contributes to important ammonia oxidation but low N2O production, which were proved by the first comammox MAG found in agricultural streams.

RESUMO

Soil net nitrogen mineralization (Nmin), a microbial-mediated conversion of organic to inorganic N, is critical for grassland productivity and biogeochemical cycling. Enhanced atmospheric N deposition has been shown to substantially increase both plant and soil N content, leading to a major change in Nmin. However, the mechanisms underlying microbial properties, particularly microbial functional genes, which drive the response of Nmin to elevated N deposition are still being discussed. Besides, it is still uncertain whether the relative importance of plant carbon (C) input, microbial properties, and mineral protection in regulating Nmin under continuous N addition would vary with the soil depth. Here, based on a 13-year multi-level field N addition experiment conducted in a typical grassland on the Loess Plateau, we elucidated how N-induced changes in plant C input, soil physicochemical properties, mineral properties, soil microbial community, and the soil Nmin rate (Rmin)-related functional genes drove the responses of Rmin to N addition in the topsoil and subsoil. The results showed that Rmin increased significantly in both topsoil and subsoil with increasing rates of N addition. Such a response was mainly dominated by the rate of soil nitrification. Structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that a combination of microbial properties (functional genes and diversity) and mineral properties regulated the response of Rmin to N addition at both soil depths, thus leading to changes in the soil N availability. More importantly, the regulatory impacts of microbial and mineral properties on Rmin were depth-dependent: the influences of microbial properties weakened with soil depth, whereas the effects of mineral protection enhanced with soil depth. Collectively, these results highlight the need to incorporate the effects of differential microbial and mineral properties on Rmin at different soil depths into the Earth system models to better predict soil N cycling under further scenarios of N deposition.

RESUMO

Construct a bacteria-algae symbiotic dynamic sponge bioremediation system to simultaneously remove multiple pollutants under micro-pollution conditions. The average removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, PO43--P, total nitrogen (TN), and Ca2+ were 98.35, 78.74, 95.64, and 84.92 %, respectively. Comparative studies with Auxenochlorella sp. sponge and bacterial sponge bioremediation system confirmed that NH4+-N and TN were mainly removed by bacterial heterotrophic nitrification - aerobic denitrification (HN-AD). PO43--P was removed by algal assimilation and the generation of Ca3(PO4)2 and Ca5(PO4)3OH, and Ca2+ was removed by algal electron transfer formation of precipitates and microbially induced calcium precipitation (MICP) by bacteria. Algae provided an aerobic environment for the bacterial HN-AD process through photosynthesis, while respiration produced CO2 and adsorbed Ca2+ to promote the formation of calcium precipitates. Immobilization of Ca2+ with microalgae via bacterial MICP helped to lift microalgal photoinhibition. The bioremediation system provides theoretical support for research on micropolluted water treatment while increasing phosphorus recovery pathways.

RESUMO

A thorough comprehension of nitrogen biogeochemical processes in the vadose zone is crucial for the effective prevention and remediation of soil-groundwater system contamination. Despite the growing research on this subject, the full scope of nitrogen biogeochemical characterization in different geological environments remains poorly understood. This study addresses this knowledge gap by integrating geochemical, microbiological and numerical simulation approaches to gain a deeper insight into nitrogen biogeochemistry in agriculture. Our findings indicate the biogeochemical behavior of nitrogen in the vadose zone is mediated by microorganisms, driven by hydraulics, influenced by geological conditions and environmental factors. Along the groundwater flow, NH4+-N was found to be heavily accumulated in the topsoil of 0-40 cm, while NO3--N was transported and driven by hydrodynamics from both vertical and horizontal directions. Microbial diversity, species composition and functional microorganisms were significantly influenced by soil depth, rather than geomorphological types. Oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), total organic carbon (TOC), soil moisture (MOI), bicarbonate (HCO3-), and ferrous (Fe2+) were identified as the principal environmental factors that regulate nitrogen metabolism and the dominant biochemical processes, encompassing nitrogen fixation, nitrification, and denitrification. Driven by hydrodynamics, NH4+-N, NO2--N and NO3--N tend to form distinct biochemical reaction zones in the vertical vadose zone. These areas are dynamic and subject to geomorphologies. It should be noted that NO3--N can migrate towards groundwater from the clayey sand in the Alluvial Plain, which presents a potential risk of groundwater contamination. The fissure structure of loess may serve as the major transport pathway for groundwater nitrogen contamination in the Loess Tableland. This finding highlights the importance of integrating microbiology, geochemistry and hydraulics to elucidate the biogeochemical processes of nitrogen in the vadose zone with a dynamic mindset.

RESUMO

Acidic nitrification, as a novel process for treating wastewater without sufficient alkalinity, has received increasing attention over the years. In this study, a continuous-flow reactor with aerobic granular sludge was successful operated at low pH (<6.5) performing high-rate acidic nitrification. Volumetric ammonium oxidation rate of 0.4-1.2 kg/(m3·d) were achieved with the specific biomass activities of 5.8-13.9 mg N/(gVSS·h). Stable partial nitritation with nitrite accumulation efficiency over 85% could be maintained at pH above 6 with the aid of residual ammonium, whereas the nitrite accumulation disappeared when pH was below 6. Interestingly, the granule morphology significantly improved during the acidic operation. The increased secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (especially polysaccharides) suggested a self-protective behavior of microbes in the aerobic granules against acidic stress. 16S rRNA gene sequencing analyses indicated that Candidatus Nitrospira defluvii was always the dominant nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, while the dominant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria shifted from Nitrosomonas europaea to Nitrosomonas mobilis. This study, for the first time, demonstrated the improved stability of aerobic granules under acidic conditions, and also highlighted aerobic granules as a useful solution to achieve high-rate acidic nitrification.

RESUMO

Sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (S0dAD) was employed to remove residual nitrogen from the biological effluent of landfill leachate after partial nitrification and denitrification pretreatment. The performance of S0dAD were assessed with various NOx--N (NO2--N and NO3--N) loadings over a 185-day operational period. The results demonstrated that a notable NOx--N removal efficiency of 97.8 ± 2.0% was achieved under nitrogen removal rates of 0.12 ± 0.02 kg N/(m3· d), leading to total nitrogen concentrations of 8.6 ± 3.8 mg/L in the effluent. Batch experiments revealed competitive utilization of nitrogenous electron acceptors, with NO2--N demonstrating 2-4 times higher denitrification rates than NO3--N under coexistence conditions. Genus-level microbial community identified that Thiobacillus and Sulfurovum was highly enriched with as key denitrifying bacteria in the S0dAD system. These findings provide insights for advanced nitrogen removal coupling S0dAD with partial nitrification and denitrification process for landfill leachate treatment.

RESUMO

Antibiotic shock may potentially impact the performance of promising microalgae-nitrifying bacteria consortia (MNBC) processes. This study investigated physiological behaviors of MNBC under sulfamethoxazole (SMX) shock (mg/L level) and verified a light regulating strategy for improving process performance. Results showed that SMX shock did not affect ammonium removal but caused nitrite accumulation, resulting from combined effects of excessive reactive oxidative species (ROS) production, inhibited microalgal photosynthetic activity, upregulated expressions of amoA and hao, and downregulated expression of nxrA. Moreover, high ammonium concentration aggravated nitrite accumulation and reduced ammonium removal owing to significantly reduced dissolved oxygen (DO). Increasing light intensity enhanced microalgal photo-oxygenation and promoted expressions of all nitrification-related genes, thus improving ammonium removal and alleviating nitrite accumulation. A central composite design coupled with response surface methodology (CCD-RSM) further demonstrated the negative impacts of SMX shock and high ammonium on MNBC and the effectiveness of the light regulation in maintaining stable process performance. This study provides theoretical basis for physiological responses and regulatory strategy of the MNBC process facing short-term antibiotic shock.

RESUMO

Forest water reclamation is a decades-old practice of repurposing municipal reclaimed water using land application on forests to filter nutrients and increase wood production. However, long-term application may lead to nutrient saturation, leaching, and potential impairment of ground and surface water quality. We studied long-term effects of reclaimed water application on nutrient leaching potential in a four-decade time series of forest water reclamation facilities in northern Idaho. Our approach compared reclaimed water treated plots with untreated control plots at each of the forest water reclamation facilities. We measured soil nitrifier abundance and net nitrification rates and used tension lysimeters to sample soil matrix water and drain gauges to sample from a combination of matrix and preferential flow paths. We determined nutrient leaching as the product of soil water nutrient concentrations and model-estimated drainage flux. There was more than 450-fold increase in nitrifier abundance and a 1000-fold increase in net nitrification rates in treated plots compared with control plots at long-established facilities, indicating greater nitrate production with increased cumulative inputs. There were no differences in soil water ammonium, phosphate, and dissolved organic nitrogen concentrations between control and effluent treatments in tension lysimeter samples. However, concurrent with increased nitrifier abundance and net nitrification, nitrate concentration below the rooting zone was 2 to 4-fold higher and nitrate leaching was 4 to 10-fold higher in effluent treated plots, particularly at facilities that have been in operation for over two decades. Thus, net nitrification and nitrifier abundance assays are likely indicators of nitrate leaching potential. Inorganic nutrient concentrations in drain gauge samples were 2 to 11-fold higher than lysimeter samples, suggesting nutrient losses occurred predominantly through preferential flow paths. Nitrate was vulnerable to leaching during the wet season under saturated flow conditions. Although nitrogen saturation is a concern that should be mitigated at long-established facilities, these forest water reclamation facilities were able to maintain average soil water nitrate concentrations to less than 2 mg L-1, so that nitrogen and phosphorous are effectively filtered to below safe water standards.

RESUMO

This study investigated the impact of varying total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) feed levels along with water temperature decreases on the performance of nitrifying moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) at 1 °C and its recovery at 3 °C. Five MBBR reactors were operated with different TAN concentrations as water temperature decreased from 20 to 3 °C: reactor R1 at 30 mg N/L, reactor R2 at 20 mg N/L, reactor R3 at 15 mg N/L, reactor R4 at 10 mg N/L and reactor R5 at 0 mg N/L. The corresponding biofilm characteristics were also analyzed to understand further nitrifying MBBR under different TAN feeding scenarios. The findings revealed that the higher TAN levels were before reaching 1 °C, the better nitrification performance and the more biomass grew. However, the highest TAN concentration (30 mg N/L) might negatively affect the nitrification performance, the activity of nitrifiers, and the growth of biofilms at 1 °C because of the toxic effects of un-ionized or free ammonia (FA). It was observed that the activities of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) were affected by FA concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 0.7 mg N/L at 1 °C, but they could gradually be adapted to such inhibitory environment, with NOB recovering more quickly and robustly than AOB. The study identified 20 mg N/L (67 % of maximum influent TAN at 1 °C in R2 as the optimal TAN feeding concentration, achieving over 90 % TAN removal and a surface area removal rate (SARR) of 0.78 ± 0.02 g N/m2·d at 1 °C. Meanwhile, R2 also exhibited the highest biofilm mass, with total solids at 13.3 mg/carrier and volatile solids at 11.3 mg/carrier. As TAN was removed, nitrite accumulation was observed at 1 °C, and higher influent TAN concentrations prior to 1 °C appeared to delay the accumulation. When water temperature increased from 1 °C to 3 °C, nitrification performance improved significantly in all reactors without nitrite accumulation, and the higher TAN feeding in the previous stage led to faster recovery. Compared with 20 °C, biofilm became thinner and denser at 1 °C and 3 °C. Furthermore, this study revealed significant shifts in microbial community composition and nitrifier abundances in response to changes in water temperature and influent TAN levels. The dominant nitrifiers were identified as Nitrosomonadaceae (AOB) and Nitrospiraceae (NOB). At 1 °C, the nitrifier abundances were significantly correlated with SARRs, FA, and biofilm density. R2, which exhibited the best nitrification performance, maintained higher nitrifier abundances at 1 °C.

RESUMO

Acidification of coastal waters, synergistically driven by increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and intensive land-derived nutrient inputs, exerts significant stresses on the biogeochemical cycles of coastal ecosystem. However, the combined effects of anthropogenic nitrogen (N) inputs and aquatic acidification on nitrification, a critical process of N cycling, remains unclear in estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Here, we showed that increased loading of ammonium (NH4+) in estuarine and coastal waters alleviated the inhibitory effect of acidification on nitrification rates but intensified the production of the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O), thus accelerating global climate change. Metatranscriptomes and natural N2O isotopic signatures further suggested that the enhanced emission of N2O may mainly source from hydroxylamine (NH2OH) oxidation rather than from nitrite (NO2-) reduction pathway of nitrifying microbes. This study elucidates how anthropogenic N inputs regulate the effects of coastal acidification on nitrification and associated N2O emissions, thereby enhancing our ability to predict the feedbacks of estuarine and coastal ecosystems to climate change and human perturbations.
