RESUMO

This paper reports the activity concentrations of 137Cs, 90Sr, 239+240Pu, 241Am, and 3Н in the form of tritiated water (НТО) and organically bound tritium (ОBТ) in the tissues and organs of roe deer (Capreolus pygargus Pal., 1771) that inhabit the 'Degelen' test location of the Semipalatinsk Test Site. Tissues and organs were sampled from six deer by killing. The activity concentrations of specific radionuclides in the samples were measured using γ-, α-, and ß-spectrometry. The radionuclide activity concentrations in the tissues and organs showed considerable variation, for example, 0.6-170 Bq kg-1 for 137Cs and 0.3-2.8×103 Bq kg-1 for 90Sr. The activity concentrations of radionuclides in animal muscular tissue did not exceed permissible values for the meat of wild animals. The tissues and organs in the roe deer were arranged as follows in descending order of their ability to accumulate 137Cs and 90Sr: for 137Cs, muscular tissue-kidneys-lungs-spleen-heart-liver-bone tissue; for 90Sr, bone tissue-liver-lungs-muscular tissue-spleen-heart-kidneys. The activity concentrations of 241Am and 239+240Pu did not exceed the minimum detectable activity. Therefore, no quantitative values could be determined for 241Am, and the 239+240Pu activity concentration could be derived for only one sample: 0.5±0.1 Bq kg-1 (liver). The distribution pattern of these radionuclides in the tissues and organs of the roe deer could not be determined because of insufficient data. The HTO volumetric activity in the tissues and organs of the examined animals ranged from 2.6×10-2 to 77 kBq l-1; activity concentration of OBT, 3.0×10-2 to 16 kBq kg-1; and OBT-to-HTO ratios, 2.0×10-3 to 5.3×102. This ratio can serve as an indicator of how long the examined animals stay in radioactively contaminated ecosystems. Within the 'Degelen' site, the activity concentrations of 90Sr and tritium, in the form of HTO and OBT, are expected to be high in the bone tissues, soft tissues, and organs, respectively.

RESUMO

Following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2011, most of the released 137Cs remained in the litter and surface soil of the adjacent forest floor. However, 137Cs absorption by large soil invertebrates near this site has not been estimated. The aim of this study was to understand the role of soil macroinvertebrates in 137Cs uptake from forest litter into forest ecosystems. Breeding experiments were conducted using scarab beetle larvae (Protaetia orientalis). Dissection experiments revealed that 85% of the total 137Cs was concentrated in the digestive tract of larvae, while a low proportion was absorbed into the skin and muscle tissues. The 137Cs absorption rate, indicating the transfer of 137Cs from consumed litter to larval tissue, was low (0.39%). 137Cs concentrations decreased to one-fourth from larva to imago, possibly due to excretion from the digestive tract and during eclosion. In the elimination experiment, biological half-lives were 0.26-0.64 and 0.11-0.47 days and 3.35-48.30 and 4.01-17.70 days for the digestive tract and muscle/skin tissues in the fast and slow components, respectively, corresponding to 137Cs discharge from the gastrointestinal tract and physiological clearance. In the sequential extraction experiment, litter digestion by flower chafer larvae significantly reduced the bioavailable fraction of 137Cs including water-soluble, exchangeable, oxidized, and organic forms, from 23.2% in litter to 17.7% in feces. Residual 137Cs was not reduced by digestion, probably because it was fixed in soil clay. Our study on breeding experiments of the Scarabaeidae beetle confirmed the low bioavailability of 137Cs in the litter in Fukushima. However, litter feeders may play an important role in transferring 137Cs to higher trophic levels in the forest ecosystem by extracting the bioavailable fraction of the vast stock of 137Cs on the forest floor.

RESUMO

To estimate a watershed's response to climate change, it is crucial to understand how human activities and climatic extremes have interacted over time. Over the last century, the Zarivar Lake watershed, Iran, has been subjected to various anthropogenic activates, including deforestation and inappropriate land-management practices alongside the implementation of conservation measures like check dams. To understand the effects of these changes on the magnitude of sediment, organic carbon (OC), and phosphorus supplies in a small sub-watershed connected to the lake over the last century, a lake sediment core was dated using 210Pbex and 137Cs as geochronometers. The average mass accumulation rate (MAR), organic carbon accumulation rates (OCAR), and particulate phosphorus accumulation rates (PPAR) of the sediment core were determined to be 6498 ± 2475, 205 ± 85, and 8.9 ± 3.3 g m-2 year-1, respectively. Between the late 1970s and early 1980s, accumulation rates were significantly higher than their averages at 7940 ± 3120, 220 ± 60, and 12.0 ± 2.8 g m-2 year-1 respectively. During this period, the watershed underwent extensive deforestation (12%) on steep slopes, coinciding with higher mean annual precipitations (more than double). Conversely, after 2009, when check dams were installed in the sub-watershed, the sediment load to the lake became negligible. The results of this research indicate that anthropogenic activities had a pronounced effect on MAR, OCAR, and PPAR, causing them to fluctuate from negligible amounts to values twice the averages over the last century, amplified by climatic factors. These results imply that implementing climate-smart watershed management strategies, such as constructing additional check dams and terraces, reinforcing restrictions on deforestation, and minimum tillage practices, can facilitate protection of lacustrine ecosystems under accelerating climate change conditions.

RESUMO

A model for accelerated aging in mice was developed: CB6F2 mice aged 39-45 days were exposed to fractionated 4-fold relatively uniform γ-radiation (137Cs, 0.98 Gy/min) at a total dose of 6.8 Gy. Radiation exposure led to delayed active growth, leukopenia, and lymphopenia for over 1 year during the post-radiation period. The death of irradiated males and females occurred significantly earlier than in control group animals. Median lifespans in the experimental group were 35-38% lower than in the control group (p<0.001). Ionizing radiation exposure led to the early development of hair depigmentation, cachexia, and the development of aging-associated diseases. In irradiated mice, oncological pathology constituted 30-35% in the mortality structure, which is twice as often as in the control group. The developed model can be used to study the pathogenesis of accelerated aging under radiation exposure and the search for means of its prevention and treatment.

RESUMO

To understand the influence of the Fukushima accident on the Northwest Pacific, the distributions and transportations of 134Cs and 137Cs in the seawater in the Northwest Pacific in May and September 2015 were studied. The data showed that the Fukushima-derived 134Cs and 137Cs at some stations can still be distinguished from background level ~ 4 years later. On the whole, the activities of 137Cs and 134Cs in seawater were decreasing from May to Sep 2015. But the increased inventories and the surface activities of 137Cs imply that there has ever been an extra 137Cs from offshore water transported to this study area (from 31° N to 27° N, 145° E to 152.5° E) in May 2015. The average activities of 137Cs in subtropical gyre area in south of KE were the highest and the least were to the east of Luzon Strait in 2015. In vertical direction, 137Cs in subtropical gyre area were mainly distributed at 100 ~ 500 m layer and 137Cs only at 500 m layer in this area showed an increasing trend from May to Sep 2015 which reflects more 137Cs were still penetrating to deeper layer of 500 m from upper water. But they were almost not found below 1000 m layer. It was associated with the subsurface transport of radiocesiums by Northwest Pacific Mode Water (NPMW) and the diffusion of mesoscale eddy. Different distribution characteristics of 137Cs existed between north of KE and south of KE. The low-temperature-low-salinity water mass likely to be the first Oyashio Intrusion was the main factor that resulted in higher 137Cs appearing at the upper 100 m layers in north of KE.

RESUMO

The Irish Sea and the Baltic Sea are nowadays still the two most Cs-137 contaminated Seas worldwide. However, the origins of this contaminations are completely different. While the Baltic Sea was unintentionally contaminated due to global fallout after the accident in the Chernobyl nuclear powerplant in 1986, the Irish sea was intentionally used for low level liquid radioactive waste discharges from the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing facility (called Windscale until 1981) between the 1950s and 1990s. Nowadays, more than 30 years later, it is still possible to detect these contaminations in fish, water and sediments of both seas. Since fish are an important part of the human diet, monitoring Cs-137 levels in fish is essential for assessing the potential radiation exposure to humans. In 2019 and 2020 two surveys were dedicated to study the current levels of radioactive contamination in fish species from both Seas. During both surveys, fish samples were collected and analysed by gamma spectrometry later on. The results show that the average Cs-137 activity in benthic, demersal and pelagic fish species from the Baltic Sea are 2.7, 4.6 and 4.2, respectively, times higher than the corresponding values of the Irish Sea. Based on this and two other comparisons, it is concluded that the Baltic Sea is the most contaminated with Cs-137.

RESUMO

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident released considerable radionuclides into the environment. Radioactive particles, composed mainly of SiO2, emerged as distinctive features, revealing insights into the accident's dynamics. While studies extensively focused on high-volatile radionuclides like Cs, investigations into low-volatile nuclides such as 90Sr and Pu remain limited. Understanding their abundance in radioactive particles is crucial for deciphering the accident's details, including reactor temperatures and injection processes. Here, we aimed to determine 90Sr and Pu amounts in radioactive particles and provide essential data for understanding the formation processes and conditions within the reactor during the accident. We employed radiochemical analysis on nine radioactive particles and determined the amounts of 90Sr and Pu in these particles. 90Sr and Pu quantification in radioactive particles showed that the 90Sr/137Cs radioactivity ratio (corrected to March 11, 2011) aligned with core temperature expectations. However, the 239+240Pu/137Cs activity ratio indicated nonvolatile Pu introduction, possibly through fuel fragments. Analyzing 90Sr and Pu enhances our understanding of the Fukushima Daiichi accident. Deviations in 239+240Pu/137Cs activity ratios underscore nonvolatile processes, emphasizing the accident's complexity. Future research should expand this data set for a more comprehensive understanding of the accident's nuances.

RESUMO

Organic matter blocks highly selective frayed edge sites on clay minerals and reduces radiocaesium adsorption. The effects of different soil organic matter on Cs adsorption on illite have been investigated. The quantity and quality of soil organic matter was varied by extracting from three contrasting soils and varying extraction conditions. Extracted organic matter was quantified, and analysed using UV and fluorescent spectroscopy. Cs adsorption was markedly lower in soil aqueous extracts, than in simple electrolyte solution at the same ionic strength (IS). Part of the decrease was attributed to soluble soil potassium. After correction for ionic strength and potassium, the relative distribution coefficient of Cs, KdIS,K, decreased with increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration. The correlation between KdIS,K and DOC was largely unchanged by taking into account any of the measured spectral parameters. We find no evidence that molecular size and composition of organic coatings determine their effect on the Cs adsorption properties of illite.

RESUMO

Photon transport simulations based on the Monte Carlo method have played a crucial role in assessing and estimating the ambient dose equivalent rates H*(10), resulting from the deposition of 137Cs in soil following the nuclear power plant accident in Fukushima. However, a comprehensive examination of the effect of vertical variations in soil properties on the simulation outcomes has not yet been performed. Disregarding the vertical distribution of soil properties not only leads to potential inaccuracies in the shielding responses of soil layers but also in the determination of the radioactive source inventory, particularly when using the concentration data in Bq/kg. These oversights diminish the reliability of the simulation results. This study addresses several soil property factors that could potentially influence the simulation results, including variations in chemical composition induced by water content, bulk density profile, and estimated inventory profile, all evaluated through an examined simulation model. The results show that inappropriate assignment of the soil density profile can cause considerable errors in the H*(10) simulation outcomes. Furthermore, the sensitivity of H*(10) to variations in soil vertical density is analyzed, with the results indicating that H*(10) can be highly sensitive to changes in the bulk density of the top 0-5 cm soil layers. These results should facilitate the establishment of appropriate simulation strategies and support the reassessment of past simulation results.

RESUMO

Radioactivity in coastal sediments in northern Vietnam was examined using data from five sediment cores to assess radioactivity concentrations and radiation risk indices. Radiation risk indices included radium equivalent activity (Raeq), the absorbed dose rate (ADR), the annual effective dose equivalent (AEDE), the activity utilization index (AUI), the external hazard index (Hex), the representative level gamma index (Iγr), and the annual gonadal effective dose rate (AGDE). The radioactivity concentrations of 40K, 232Th, 226Ra, 238U, and 137Cs were 567, 56.1, 35.1, 37.9, and 1.18 Bq/kg, respectively. The average concentrations of 40K, 232Th, 226Ra, and 238U were above the global average at five sites, except for 137Cs, which was low. The Raeq, Hex, and AUI indices were below the recommended values, while the AEDE, ADR, AGDE, and Iγr indices were above the recommended values. Moreover, 40K, 232Th, 226Ra, and 238U had significant impacts on the radiation hazard indices Raeq, ADR, AEDE, Iγr, AUI, Hex, and AGDE. There are three coastal sediment groups on the northern coast of Vietnam: Group 1 has a higher radioactivity and radiation risk index than Group 2 but a lower value than Group 3. Group 3 had the highest radioactivity and radiation risk index. The values of 40K, 232Th, 226Ra, and 238U and the ADR, AUI, Iγr, and AGDE indices in the sediment threaten the living environment.

RESUMO

To establish the radioactivity level of soils and assess the associated radiological impact on residents, 58 samples from the town of Bitola and its environs were collected. After conducting gross alpha and gross beta measurements with a gas-flow proportional counter as a preliminary screening test, subsequent gamma-spectrometry measurements reveal the presence of 40K, 226Ra, 232Th, and 137Cs in the soil samples as radionuclides with the highest impact. The absorbed gamma dose rate, the annual effective dose, radium equivalent activity, external hazard index, gamma index, excess lifetime cancer risk, and annual gonadal dose were calculated using the obtained activity concentrations of the radionuclides. Upon comparison with similar studies conducted in the Balkan countries, the obtained results for radiation hazard indices were found to be the highest in the region. Coloured maps were generated to visually represent the spatial distribution of the absorbed gamma dose rate in air and annual effective dose, clearly indicating the combined influence of geology and human activities, including the nearby thermoelectric power plant operation.

RESUMO

Following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster in March 2011, the Japanese government initiated an unprecedented decontamination programme to remediate 137Cs-contaminated soils and allow population return. This programme involved the removal of topsoil under farmland and residential land, and its replacement with "fresh soil" composed of granitic saprolite. However, decontamination was limited to these two land uses, without remediating forests, which cover 70 % of the surface area in the affected region. In this unprecedented context, the specific impact of this unique decontamination programme on 137Cs transfers in river systems remains to be quantified at the catchment scale. In this study, based on the analysis of a sediment core collected in June 2021 in the Mano Dam reservoir draining a decontaminated catchment, the effects of soil decontamination on particle-bound 137Cs dynamics and sediment source contributions in response to a succession of extreme precipitation events were retrospectively assessed. The sequence of sediment layer deposition and its chronology were reconstructed through the analysis of several diagnostic properties (organic matter, elemental geochemistry, visible colourimetry, granulometry) and contextual information. During abandonment (2011-2016), cropland contribution decreased (31 %). Concurrently, 137Cs activity and deposition flux decreased (19 and 29%year-1, respectively). Following decontamination (2017), sediment transfer increased (270 %) in response to increased contributions from decontaminated cropland and "fresh soil" (625 % and 180 % respectively). Meanwhile, forest contributions remained stable. In contrast, 137Cs activity dropped (65 %), although 137Cs deposition flux remained constant. Forests acted as a stable source of 137Cs. Accordingly, 137Cs deposition flux after decontamination (2016-2021) was similar to that observed during the 5-years period of land abandonment (2011-2016), as a result of the regrowth of spontaneous vegetation over farmland, protecting soil against erosion. Future research should further investigate the impact of longer land abandonment that prevailed in some regions decontaminated lately on the 137Cs fluxes in the rivers.

RESUMO

The invasion of Ukraine and military operations around Ukrainian nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities have prompted us to search for radiocaesium in mosses from the Kopacki Rit Nature Park in Croatia, since mosses are known bioindicators of airborne radioactive pollution, and Kopacki Rit is a known low radiocaesium background area. Sampling was finished in August 2023, and our analysis found no elevated radiocaesium levels. Kopacki Rit therefore remains a suitable place for future detection of anthropogenic radioactive pollutants.

RESUMO

This paper presents research on the assessment of the radioecological state of plant cover surrounding two research reactor facilities located within the Semipalatinsk Test Site (STS) as examples of nuclear fuel cycle facilities (NFC). Source data on the concentrations of artificial radionuclides in the plant cover were obtained. Quantitative values for 137Cs, 241Am, and 239+240Pu activity concentrations were determined in plants across the perimeters of the facilities, indicating that these compounds may be present in the associated media from the perspective of accumulative bioindication. The values determined for artificial radionuclides in the 'soil‒plant' system around the researched NFC facilities were attributed to radioactive contamination of the STS territory.

RESUMO

An advanced spatial-unfolding technique capable of reconstructing the activity distribution within an exclusion zone from Compton gamma imager measurements taken outside of it is introduced. Although the method is generally applicable to extended sources, we demonstrate it here on a calibrated Cs-137 point source through Monte Carlo simulation studies as well as with measurements made using a Silicon Compton Telescope for Safety and Security (SCoTSS) gamma imager. For synthetic data the method accurately reconstructs the total activity contained within the mapped zone of interest, even when the size of the basis elements used to reconstruct the activity distribution is larger than the source itself. For experimental data, the method reliably located the source but underestimated its activity by up to 17%. This is accurate enough for real-world security applications. The underestimation is likely due to effects not yet included in the simulated response of the detector. The method has widespread applicability in the radiological/nuclear safety and security field, particularly for scenarios in which a threat material or contaminated area lies within a no-entry or no-fly zone.

RESUMO

This paper explores the environmental hazards associated with nuclear facilities in arid regions, focusing on the rapid migration of radionuclides facilitated by flood runoff resulting from extreme rainstorms. Through a case study of a proposed nuclear facility site in China, the study developed a comprehensive model to calculate the transformation of 90Sr and 137Cs in flood and subsurface water during accidents. The methodology employs a combination of field tests, radionuclide adsorption tests, the SWAT model, and the HGS model to create a fully integrated model. This approach allows for the several complex couplings (radionuclide-flood runoff-subsurface water) that have not been previously examined in the reactive solute transport. The findings reveal that despite groundwater movement being relatively sluggish, 90Sr and 137Cs migrate downstream rapidly due to their transportation by floods, which permeate the Upper Pleistocene gravel aquifer along the route. The study underscores the importance of considering the migration of radionuclides carried by floods generated by extreme rainstorms, as it poses a significant risk that cannot be ignored.

RESUMO

As today the 137Cs fallout peak, in sediment cores, corresponds only to 25% of its initial concentration, alternatives to the use of 137Cs as a210Pb sediment dating validation tool are proposed. In highly industrialized bays, such as Guanabara Bay in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan region, several chemical/compounds from the surrounding industry releases may be applied as validation tools. Chromium and copper profiles in a sediment core adequately fit the expected pattern due to the implementation of a chemical plant in 1958, reaching their maximum discharge in 1982 and subsequently decreasing due to the operation of a new wastewater treatment plant. A diffuse source such, as the PCB-based mixture Askarel, was also applied as an alternative validation tool, and the observed concentration profile reproduced the expected behavior, with increasing concentration after the Second World War and a decrease after the ban of this product in 1981. The observed Aroclor 1254 and 1260 mixture chlorination rates fit the most widely distributed PCB-based products in the country.

The present work documents potassium ferric hexacyanoferrate (KFCF) KFe[Fe(CN)6] containing feed to be an effective and inexpensive countermeasure to reduce the 137Cs contamination of fish. Laboratory aquarium experiments were performed to investigate the effect of feed containing potassium ferric hexacyanoferrate on 137Cs uptake and excretion by silver Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782)). After the 120-day period of 137Cs uptake with feed, reaching equilibrium 137Cs level in fish, fish in some aquariums received feeds containing either 0.1 % or 1 % KFCF for 180 days in combination with clean feed or with feed containing 137Cs. These feeds resulted in 3.6 ± 0.7 and 4.4 ± 0.9 times, respectively, lower activity of 137Cs in fish compared to control fish fed 137Cs throughout the experiment and receiving feed without KFCF. Following the first 100 days with the KFCF containing feed, the 137Cs level in fish fed contaminated feed was even lower than in fish receiving clean feed, with a half-life of 137Cs activity in fish of only T1/2 = 23-35 days. Using clean feed containing 0 %, 0.1 % and 1 % KFCF for 180 days after the 120-day 137Cs uptake period, the excretion rates for 137Cs activity in fish kb' were (6.4 ± 0.2)⋅10-3 day-1, (1.08 ± 0.08)⋅10-2 day-1, and (1.3 ± 0.1)⋅10-2 day-1, respectively (T1/2 = 108 ± 3 days, 64 ± 5 days, and 53 ± 4 days). The decrease rates for 137Cs activity concentrations in fish kb were (8.4 ± 0.3)⋅10-3 day-1, (1.3 ± 0.1)⋅10-2 day-1, and (1.5 ± 0.1)⋅10-2 day-1, respectively (T1/2 = 83 ± 3 days, 53 ± 4 days, and 46 ± 3 days). Our results demonstrate a statistically significant effect (p < 0.01) of KFCF on the excretion of 137Cs from silver Prussian carp: T1/2 decreased from 108 days with clean feeding to 53-64 days when KFCF is added.

RESUMO

Radiocaesium introduced to coastal waters by the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station (F1NPS) elevated the radioactivity level in biota. The radionuclide level in zooplankton, concentration of 137Cs radioactivity in surface water fish decreased rapidly, which was the primary food source for planktivorous fish, was recognized as not to be depurated at the same level prior to the accident. To evaluate the possible cause of this phenomenon, zooplankton and surface water fish were collected off Fukushima during 2018-2021, and the presence of radioactive particles was also examined. The concentrations of stable Cs and 137Cs radioactivity were analysed along with aluminium which was an indicator element of Cs that originated from suspended particles which were attached to or ingested by zooplankton. As a result, radioactive particles were often found in coastal zooplankton samples, and stable Cs and 137Cs of this inorganic fraction were identified. After removal of this excess radioactivity, the 137Cs radioactivity in whole-body tissue of zooplankton was derived. However, the level in the soft part of zooplankton during 2018-2020 was still greater than the levels which existed before 2010. Since habitat seawater was understood to not be a substantial source of 137Cs, then 137Cs transfer along the food chain, possibly from phytoplankton or detritus of enhanced radioactivity were suggested as important sources of 137Cs. In addition, enhanced 137Cs radioactivity in zooplankton was considered consequently elevate radioactivity levels in surface-dwelling water fish off Fukushima. Although the radioactivity level was not radiologically significant in relation to seafood safety limit, enhanced 137Cs radioactivity levels in biota was demonstrated in southern waters off Fukushima. In contrast, derived 137Cs/133Cs atom ratios of fish and seawater south of 37°E and west from 142°E indicated that radiocaesium transfer between fish and the environment was in an equilibrium state, showing the environment beyond these geographical coordinates had returned to the pre-accident state.

RESUMO

Certified reference material (CRM) for natural (40K,210Pb,210Po,226Ra,228Ra,228Th,230Th,232Th,234U,235U, and238U) and anthropogenic (137Cs,239+240Pu, and241Am) radionuclides in marine sediment from the Baltic Sea (IAEA-465) has been developed. Information values are given for 238Pu,239Pu and240Pu. Altogether 27 laboratories participated in this exercise. Radiometric (alpha-spectrometry, gamma-spectrometry and beta counting, as well as mass spectrometry (ICP-MS and AMS) techniques were applied in measurements. The CRM is intended to be used for Quality Assurance/Quality Control of radionuclide analyses, for the development and validation of analytical methods, for the development of reference methods and for training purposes.
