RESUMO

Adult size in numerous insects is strongly dependent on temperature. In several cases, a temperature-size rule is observed in which developmental temperature and adult size tradeoff. Although several previous studies have demonstrated the temperature-size rule, only a few have explored the relationship between developmental temperature and weapon traits or sexual size dimorphism. This study was conducted to investigate the size of the broad-horned flour beetle Gnatocerus cornutus when it was developed under different temperatures. G. cornutus males possess weapon traits for male-male combat and exhibit sexual size dimorphism in other morphological traits. Results showed that male weapon size and body size complied with the temperature-size rule. Furthermore, the extent of sex dimorphism in genae width, a weapon-supportive trait, were larger at lower temperatures. Our findings suggest that the temperature-size rule also influences the size of sexual traits.

Stingless bees, prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, are a tribe of eusocial bees that are crucial pollinators for economic crops and native plants and, produce honey and pollen. However, colony expansion is limited by a shortage of queens for new colonies. Therefore, mass artificial rearing of virgin queens could address this in commercially managed meliponiculture. Furthermore, the in vitro rearing of queen stingless bees can improve meliponiculture management and conservation efforts. Herein, we explored the efficacy of in vitro queen rearing for Heterotrigona itama, assessing the queen's body size, reproductive organ size (ovary and spermatheca), acceptance rate into new, small colonies, and mating frequency. H. itama larvae developed into queens when fed with 120 µL-150 µL of larval food, resulting in in vitro queens having body sizes similar to those of naturally produced queens. Microscopic analysis revealed well-developed ovaries and spermathecae in in vitro-reared queens, unlike the smaller ovaries and the absence of spermathecae in the naturally produced workers. Acceptance of in vitro-reared queens was independent of worker age, and mating frequency was low but not significantly different from naturally produced queens. These findings could enhance stingless beekeeping practices and conservation efforts for the native stingless bee species.

Living at high altitudes impose physiological and ecological challenges to which species may respond altering their body size, body proportions, and the shape of their body parts. Despite the importance of this topic for understanding the origin of species diversity, little attention has been invested in this phenomenon at the populational level. This paper study the relationship between altitude and body size, body proportions, and forewing shape venation of two populations of the parasitoid wasp Cotesia flavipes. Wasps were collected from Diatraea spp. larvae from sugarcane crops in two Colombian mountain ranges that cover between 600 m and 2143 m of altitude. Linear measurements of different body regions and geometric morphometrics of the forewing were subject to multivariate comparisons and allometric analyses to assess variation and to compare trends between ranges. Central (600 m to 1704 m) and Eastern Cordillera (877 m to 2143 m) populations showed different trends between body size and altitude. Allometric trends were not uniform within or between populations nor between structures. The allometric slopes of five body measurements from a single altitude differed from these from its own mountain range suggesting that body size trends along the cordilleras are a consequence of altitude and not of intrinsic body resource allocation processes. Wing shape between populations differed; however, these changes were poorly related to altitude. In agreement with recent studies in other groups, the observed allometric and wing shape differences between the two C. flavipes populations could be a plasticity response to altitude with interesting implications for posterior genetic differentiation.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the plasma pharmacokinetics of oxytetracycline (OTC) in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) of different body sizes. Methods: The research was carried out on three groups as small (30-50 g), medium (90-110 g) and large (185-215 g) body sizes at 8 ± 0.5 °C. OTC was administered orally at a dose of 60 mg/kg to all groups. Blood samples were taken at 19 different sampling times until the 384 h after oxytetracycline administration. The plasma concentrations of OTC were measured using high pressure liquid chromatography-ultraviolet and pharmacokinetic parameters were evaluated using non-compartmental analysis. Results: OTC was detected in small-body sized fish until the 336 h and in medium and large-body sized fish until the 384 h. The elimination half-life of OTC was 85.46, 87.24 and 86.98 h in the small, medium and large body size groups, respectively. The peak plasma concentration increased from 0.66 to 1.11 µg/mL, and the area under the plasma concentration-versus time curve from zero (0) h to infinity (∞) increased from 87.86 to 151.52 h*µg/mL, in tandem with the increase in fish body size. As fish body size increased, volume of distribution and total body clearance decreased. Conclusion: These results show that the pharmacokinetics of OTC vary depending on fish size. Therefore, there is a need to reveal the pharmacodynamic activity of OTC in rainbow trout of different body sizes.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases are an increasing threat in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and overweight and obesity are affecting people across all socioeconomic groups. Some studies suggest that big body sizes may be perceived as desirable among women in SSA and that high prevalence of obesity and overweight are especially present in low socioeconomic societies. This study explores the role of socioeconomic factors in the perception of the ideal body among Kenyan women and whether perceptions and beliefs about the ideal body should be considered relevant when targeting the prevention of obesity and overweight. METHOD: In-depth interviews were conducted with 8 Kenyan women with varying educational backgrounds, aged between 21 and 48, using a qualitative study design. The interviews were conducted in December 2022 and January 2023 in Nairobi, audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed through qualitative content analysis and a coding system using deductive and inductive codes. RESULTS: The participants reported that conclusions about a person's health and wealth status are drawn based on different body sizes. Furthermore, traditional views about the ideal body size, societal pressure, as well as the women's own experience with their body size play a role in the perception of an ideal body. CONCLUSION: Small-sized women desire to gain weight as society may view them as weak and sick. Big-sized women aim to reduce weight primarily due to health complications. Nevertheless, traditionally, a big-sized woman is considered strong and wealthy, creating external pressure on women to fulfil this body image-these findings emphasise traditional aspects in designing culturally sensitive prevention and intervention methods to address overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is commonly aggregated with indices of metabolic health. Proponents of body positivity approaches question whether body size is a determinant of health and well-being. Our objective was to conduct an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to determine if body size measurements factor load with or independent of metabolic health measures. METHODS: The EFA was conducted on n= 249 adults using baseline data from four weight loss trials (Sample 1: n = 40; Sample 2: n = 52; Sample 3: n = 53; Sample 4: n = 104). An EFA of nine items (systolic blood pressure [SBP], diastolic blood pressure [DBP], hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c], HDL-cholesterol [HDL], LDL-cholesterol [LDL], total cholesterol [TC], body mass index [BMI], body fat percent BF%], and waist circumference [WC]) was conducted with oblique rotation. RESULTS: Three factors were retained, which produced a model explaining 87.5% of the variance. Six items loaded strongly (>0.8) under three components and were selected for retention (Factor 1: LDL and TC; Factor 2: BMI and WC; Factor 3: SBP and DBP). CONCLUSION: Body size measures loaded separately from measures of metabolic health and metabolic health were further split into lipid- and blood pressure-focused factors. These results support weight-neutral interventions to improve overall health and well-being.

Evolutionary body size decrease has profound consequences for the morphology of an organism. In the evolution of the Characidae, the most species-rich family of Neotropical fishes, a prominent trend is the reduction of body size. The most typical effect is the simplification and reduction of morphological features through terminal deletion processes, resulting in the loss of skeletal elements and structures. To provide further information on the matter, we present a detailed description of the skeleton of Hyphessobrycon piabinhas, a poorly known, small representative of the largest genus of Characidae. We further discuss the identity and phylogenetic relationships of H. piabinhas. It belongs to the subfamily Stethaprioninae and exhibits considerable morphological similarity to other congeners from neighboring drainage systems. We identify several morphological simplifications in H. piabinhas and discuss them based on ontogenetic data available for Characiformes. These developmentally truncated elements are also present in many other small representatives of the family and seem to be among the first morphological modifications to occur in the context of body size reduction of Characidae. We argue that structural losses are not strictly correlated with sizes below 26 mm SL, although the most notable simplifications are typically observed in the miniatures.

Sexual dimorphism is widespread among animals, with diverse patterns and proposed explanations observed across the Tree of Life. Here we present the first formal analysis of the patterns of sexual dimorphism in body size and cephalic sensory appendages across 40 species (from 10 genera) of armoured tardigrades (Echiniscidae). Phylogenetic signal was found for body size traits and the cephalic papilla relative size, indicating that the association between these traits between the sexes has high evolutionary persistence. The Echiniscidae body size dimorphism is generally female-biased, which would be in accordance with the fecundity hypothesis. No strong evidence of allometric patterns of body size sexual dimorphism was found. In contrast, some of the cephalic appendages show male-biased sexual dimorphism, particularly those that, by being more innervated, are thought to function as chemodetection organs used by males during mate search. The latter is consistent with the sexual selection hypothesis. As the first systematic quantification and analysis of the patterns of sexual dimorphism in the phylum Tardigrada, this study provides important insights into their ecology and evolution, such as corroborating the suggestion that cephalic appendages evolved for mate searching.

There is a growing interest in the effects of climate warming on olfaction, as temperature may affect this essential sense. In insects, the response of the olfactory system to developmental temperature might be mediated by body size or mass because body size and mass are negatively affected by developmental temperature in most ectotherms. We tested this hypothesis of a mass-mediated effect of developmental temperature on olfaction in the moth Spodoptera littoralis. We measured the olfactory sensitivity of male to female sex pheromone and five plant odors using electroantennography. We compared males reared at an optimal temperature (25 °C with a daily fluctuation of ±5 °C) and at a high temperature (33 ± 5 °C) close to the upper limit of S. littoralis. On average, the olfactory sensitivity of males did not differ between the two developmental temperatures. However, our analyses revealed an interaction between the effects of developmental temperature and body mass on the detection of the six chemicals tested. This interaction is explained by a positive relationship between antennal sensitivity and body mass observed only with the high developmental temperature. Our results show that the effect of developmental temperature may not be detected when organism size is ignored.

Animals exhibiting mirror self-recognition (MSR) are considered self-aware; however, studies on their level of self-awareness remain inconclusive. Recent research has indicated the potential for cleaner fish (Labroides dimidiatus) to possess a sophisticated level of private self-awareness. However, as this study revealed only an aspect of private self-awareness, further investigation into other elements is essential to substantiate this hypothesis. Here, we show that cleaner fish, having attained MSR, construct a mental image of their bodies by investigating their ability to recall body size. A size-based hierarchy governs the outcomes of their confrontations. The mirror-naïve fish behaved aggressively when presented with photographs of two unfamiliar conspecifics that were 10% larger and 10% smaller than their body sizes. After passing the MSR test, they refrained from aggression toward the larger photographs but still behaved aggressively toward the smaller ones without re-examining their mirror images. These findings suggest that cleaner fish accurately recognize their body size based on mental images of their bodies formed through MSR. Additionally, mirror-experienced fish frequently revisited the mirror when presented with an intimidating larger photograph, implying the potential use of mirrors for assessing body size. Our study established cleaner fish as the first non-human animal to be demonstrated to possess private self-awareness.

We aimed to examine the correlation between periodontitis and body size phenotypes in 7301 participants without diagnosed chronic diseases in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2015. The participants were categorized into the following body size phenotype groups based on body mass index and the presence of metabolic syndrome: metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically abnormal normal weight (MANW), metabolically healthy obese (MHO), and metabolically abnormal obese (MAO). The prevalence rates of mild and severe periodontitis were 18.1% and 7.5%, respectively. Patients with periodontitis were older, current smokers, had a lower family income, were less likely to engage in regular tooth brushing or exercise, and had a higher body mass index and glucose levels. Periodontitis was more prevalent in the MANW and MAO groups than in the MHNW and MHO groups. Compared with the MHNW phenotype, the MAO and MANW phenotypes were significantly associated with mild and severe periodontitis, and the MHO phenotype was significantly associated with mild periodontitis. The MANW and MAO phenotypes are independent risk factors for periodontitis in adults without diagnosed chronic diseases. To enhance public health, a greater focus and effective approaches for identifying metabolic disease phenotypes among individuals with periodontal disease may be clinically relevant.

An animal's morphology influences its ability to perform essential tasks, such as locomoting to obtain prey or escape predators. While morphology-performance relationships are well-studied in lizards, most conclusions have been based only on male study subjects, leaving unanswered questions about females. Sex-specific differences are important to understand because females carry the bulk of the physiological demands of reproduction. Consequently, their health and survival can determine the fate of the population as a whole. To address this knowledge gap, we sampled introduced populations of common wall lizards (Podarcis muralis) in Ohio, USA. We measured a complete suite of limb and body dimensions of both males and females, and we measured sprint speeds while following straight and curved paths on different substrates. Using a multivariate statistical approach, we identified that body dimensions relative to snout-to-vent length in males were much larger compared with females and that body dimensions of P. muralis have changed over time in both sexes. We found that sprint speed along curved paths increased with relative limb size in both males and females. When following straight paths, male speed similarly increased as body dimensions increased; conversely, female speed decreased as body dimensions increased. Female sprint speed was also found to have less variation than that of males and was less affected by changes in body size and hindfoot length compared with males. This study thus provides insights into how selective pressures might shape males and females differently and the functional implications of sexual dimorphism.

How the timing of development is linked to organismal size is a longstanding question. Although numerous studies have reported a correlation of temporal and spatial traits, the developmental or selective constraints underlying this link remain largely unexplored. We address this question by studying the periodic process of embryonic axis segmentation in-vivo in Oryzias fish. Interspecies comparisons reveal that the timing of segmentation correlates to segment, tissue and organismal size. Segment size in turn scales according to tissue and organism size. To probe for underlying causes, we genetically hybridised two closely related species. Quantitative analysis in ~600 phenotypically diverse F2 embryos reveals a decoupling of timing from size control, while spatial scaling is preserved. Using developmental quantitative trait loci (devQTL) mapping we identify distinct genetic loci linked to either the control of segmentation timing or tissue size. This study demonstrates that a developmental constraint mechanism underlies spatial scaling of axis segmentation, while its spatial and temporal control are dissociable modules.

PURPOSE: Patient-specific protocol optimisation in abdomino-pelvic Computed Tomography (CT) requires measurement of body habitus/size (BH), sensitivity-specificity (surrogates image quality (IQ) metrics) and risk (surrogates often dose quantities) (RD). This work provides an updated inventory of metrics available for each of these three categories of optimisation variables derivable directly from patient measurements or images. We consider objective IQ metrics mostly in the spatial domain (i.e., those related directly to sharpness, contrast, noise quantity/texture and perceived detectability as these are used by radiologists to assess the acceptability or otherwise of patient images in practice). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The search engine used was PubMed with the search period being 2010-2024. The key words used were: 'comput* tomography', 'CT', 'abdom*', 'dose', 'risk', 'SSDE', 'image quality', 'water equivalent diameter', 'size', 'body composition', 'habit*', 'BMI', 'obes*', 'overweight'. Since BH is critical for patient specific optimisation, articles correlating RD vs BH, and IQ vs BH were reviewed. RESULTS: The inventory includes 11 BH, 12 IQ and 6 RD metrics. 25 RD vs BH correlation studies and 9 IQ vs BH correlation studies were identified. 7 articles in the latter group correlated metrics from all three categories concurrently. CONCLUSIONS: Protocol optimisation should be fine-tuned to the level of the individual patient and particular clinical query. This would require a judicious choice of metrics from each of the three categories. It is suggested that, for increased utility in clinical practice, more future optimisation studies be clinical task based and involve the three categories of metrics concurrently.

As reproduction phenologies shift with climate change, populations can experience intraspecific priority effects, wherein early hatching cohorts experience an advantage over late-hatching cohorts, resulting in altered demography. Our study objective was to identify how variation in egg hatching phenology alters intraspecific interactions in small-mouthed salamanders, Ambystoma texanum. We addressed two research questions: (Q1) How are demographic responses altered by variation in the temporal duration of hatching between cohorts, and (Q2) How does the seasonality of hatching delays affect demographic responses? We manipulated hatching phenologies of A. texanum eggs and reared larvae in outdoor mesocosms to metamorphosis. For Q1, hatching delay exhibited non-linear relationships with survival and body size, with the greatest asynchrony in cohort additions resulting in the highest mortality and largest body sizes. For Q2, hatching delay effects were stronger (i.e., survival was lower and body sizes larger) when they occurred later in the season, potentially due to temperature differences that larvae experienced. Overall, our results demonstrate that changes in intraspecific interactions due to phenological shifts can be context-dependent, depending on the strength (i.e., temporal duration) and seasonality of such processes. Identifying context-dependencies of phenological shifts will be critical for predicting changes in organismal demographics with climatic shifts.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the associations of changes in metabolic health across categories of body size phenotype with the risk of colorectal cancer in a community-based prospective cohort. METHODS: In the current study, a total of 70,987 participants were included. Changes in metabolic health across categories of body size phenotype were assessed between the health examination for the first time in the years 2006 through 2009 and a 2010/2011 health examination. A multivariate Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess the associations of changes in metabolic health across body size phenotype categories with risk of colorectal cancer. RESULTS: During the median follow-up time of 11.04 years, 428 (0.60%) participants developed colorectal cancer. Compared with metabolically healthy normal-weight (MHNW) participants who remained MH, the risk of colorectal cancer was increased by 144% (95% CI: 1.21-4.95) for participants with metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) who converted to a metabolically unhealthy (MU) phenotype. Participants who were MU at baseline were still at increased risk of colorectal cancer, regardless of obesity status. CONCLUSIONS: The MHO phenotype was a dynamic status over time, and converting to MU during follow-up and being initially MU were associated with having an increased risk of colorectal cancer, regardless of degree of obesity and body size phenotype.

Due to widespread atmospheric deposition of mercury (Hg), all aquatic food webs are contaminated with toxic methyl mercury (MeHg). At high concentrations, MeHg poses a health hazard to wildlife and humans. Spiders feeding in riparian habitats (hereafter referred to as riparian spiders) have been proposed as sentinels of MeHg contamination of aquatic systems. Riparian spiders are exposed to MeHg through their diets, and the concentration of MeHg in spiders is positively related to the proportion of MeHg-contaminated emergent aquatic insects in their diets. The use of spiders as sentinels is complex because their MeHg concentrations can vary, not only among ecosystems but also between different spider taxa and as a function of spider body size. The objective of the present study was to examine how the level of ecosystem contamination, spider taxon, and spider body size interact to influence MeHg concentrations in four genera of riparian spiders from two rivers with different levels of Hg contamination. We collected four genera of riparian spiders (Tetragnatha sp., Larinioides sp., Pardosa sp., and Rabidosa sp.) from two sites along both the Clear Fork of the Trinity River and the West Fork of the Trinity River (Fort Worth, TX, USA). We analyzed concentrations of MeHg in different body sizes of spiders from each genus. We found that MeHg contamination of the river ecosystem, spider taxon, and spider body size were important determinants of MeHg concentration in riparian spiders. The results suggest that any of the four taxa of riparian spiders from the present study could be used as sentinels of aquatic MeHg contamination, but they should not be used interchangeably because of the interdependence between the effects of ecosystem contamination level, spider taxon, and body size. Future studies utilizing riparian spiders as sentinels of biomagnifying aquatic contaminants (e.g., MeHg, polychlorinated biphenyls) should consider the potentially complex interaction effects between ecosystem contamination level, spider taxon, and spider body size.
