Iodine and fluorine, as halogen elements, are often coexisting in water environments, with nearly 200 million people suffering from fluorosis globally, and, in 11 countries and territories, adolescents have iodine intakes higher than that required for the prevention of iodine deficiency disorders. It has been suggested that excess iodine and/or fluorine can affect thyroid health and intellectual development, especially in children, but their combined effect has been less studied in this population. This study investigated 399 school-age children in Tianjin, China, collected drinking water samples from areas where the school-age children lived, and grouped the respondents according to iodine and fluorine levels. Thyroid health was measured using thyroid hormone levels, thyroid volume, and the presence of thyroid nodules; intelligence quotient (IQ) was assessed using the Raven's Progressive Matrices (CRT) test; and monoamine neurotransmitter levels were used to explore the potential relationship between thyroid health and intelligence. Multiple linear regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses showed that iodine and fluorine were positively correlated with thyroid volume and the incidence of thyroid nodules in school-age children, and negatively correlated with IQ; similar results were obtained in the secondary subgroups based on urinary iodine and urinary fluoride levels. Interaction analyses revealed a synergistic effect of iodine and fluorine. A pathway analysis showed that iodine and fluorine were negatively associated with the secretion of free triiodothyronine (FT3) and free tetraiodothyronine (FT4), which in turn were negatively associated with the secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Iodine and fluorine may affect IQ in school-aged children through the above pathways that affect thyroid hormone secretion; of these, FT3 and TSH were negatively correlated with IQ, whereas FT4 was positively correlated with IQ. The relationship between thyroid hormones and monoamine neurotransmitters may involve the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, with FT4 hormone concentrations positively correlating with dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HT) concentrations, and FT3 hormone concentrations positively correlating with DA concentrations. Monoamine neurotransmitters may play a mediating role in the effects of iodine and fluoride on intelligence in schoolchildren. However, this study has some limitations, as the data were derived from a cross-sectional study in Tianjin, China, and no attention was paid to the reciprocal effects of iodine and fluorine at different doses on thyroid health and intelligence in schoolchildren in other regions.

BACKGROUND: Almajiri is a word that describes a child sent far away from his parents to study the Quran under the tutelage and care of a Muslim scholar, also known as a Mallam. In recent times, the capacity of the Mallam to cater for these children has declined, leading them to beg on the streets for sustenance. Cognitive capacity has rarely been studied amongst this population. This study was designed to compare the intelligence quotients of Almajirai attending Quranic Schools and that of pupils attending public primary school in Zaria, Northwest Nigeria. METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional study design was employed to compare the intelligence quotients of 401 participants (200 Almajirai and 201 public primary school pupils). All participants were administered a socio-demographic questionnaire and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Fourth Version (WISC-IV). RESULTS: Public primary school pupils performed significantly better than Almajirai on all administered subtests of the WISC-IV except arithmetic. The mean Full-Scale IQ score of Almajirai was significantly lower than that of public primary school pupils (60.30±11.49 vs. 70.12 ± 11.9, p< 0.001, 95% CI= -12.12-7.52). The intelligence quotient of Almajirai was associated with the age of the child and the father's level of education while that of public primary school pupils was associated with their current class in school. CONCLUSION: Public primary school pupils performed better than Almajirai on intelligence tests indicating a need to reform Almajiri Education. It is recommended that the system be strengthened and its curriculum expanded to include other modules rather than its current restriction to religious education.


CONTEXTE: Almajiri est un terme désignant un enfant envoyé loin de ses parents pour étudier le Coran sous la tutelle et les soins d'un érudit musulman, également appelé Mallam. Ces dernières années, la capacité du Mallam à subvenir aux besoins de ces enfants a diminué, les contraignant à mendier dans les rues pour survivre. La capacité cognitive de cette population a rarement été étudiée. Cette étude a été conçue pour comparer les quotients intellectuels des Almajirai fréquentant les écoles coraniques et ceux des élèves fréquentant les écoles primaires publiques à Zaria, dans le nord-ouest du Nigéria. MÉTHODES: Une étude comparative transversale a été menée pour comparer les quotients intellectuels de 401 participants (200 Almajirai et 201 élèves des écoles primaires publiques). Tous les participants ont rempli un questionnaire sociodémographique et le test d'intelligence pour enfants Wechsler, quatrième version (WISCIV). RÉSULTATS: Les élèves des écoles primaires publiques ont obtenu des résultats significativement meilleurs que les Almajirai dans tous les sous-tests du WISC-IV, à l'exception de l'arithmétique. Le score moyen de QI global des Almajirai était significativement inférieur à celui des élèves des écoles primaires publiques (60,30 ± 11,49 contre 70,12 ± 11,9, p < 0,001, IC à 95 % = -12,12 à -7,52). Le quotient intellectuel des Almajirai était associé à l'âge de l'enfant et au niveau d'éducation du père, tandis que celui des élèves des écoles primaires publiques était lié à leur classe actuelle à l'école. CONCLUSION: Les élèves des écoles primaires publiques ont mieux performé que les Almajirai aux tests d'intelligence, indiquant un besoin de réformer le système éducatif Almajiri. Il est recommandé de renforcer ce système et d'élargir son programme pour inclure d'autres modules au-delà de l'éducation religieuse actuelle. OBJECTIVES: Poor sleep quality has been linked to adverse health outcomes. It is important to understand factors contributing to sleep quality. Previous research has suggested increased cognition and education duration have a protective effect on sleep quality in old age. This study aimed to assess the hypothesis that age-11 intelligence quotient and highest achieved education level are associated with subjective sleep quality at age 60. METHODS: Participants are members of the Newcastle Thousand Families Study birth cohort, all born in 1947. Data included a calculated intelligence quotient score based on participant's 11-plus exam results, highest achieved education level, social class at ages 25 and 50 and global Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) at age 60. Multivariable regression analysis was used to investigate effect sizes of variables on global PSQI, which formed the basis of a path analysis model. RESULTS: After excluding participants with incomplete data, and those who had been diagnosed with sleep apnea, 251 participants were included in the path analysis model. Education level was associated with global PSQI (R=-0.653; 95% CI -1.161, -0.145; P = .012) but age-11 intelligence quotient was not. While a similar association was seen for women in the stratified analysis, no such associations were seen for men. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study show an inverse relationship between education level, but not childhood intelligence quotient, and sleep quality in later life, in women only. Future research is needed to examine the mechanism underlying this relationship.

The quantification of cognitive powers rests on identifying a behavioural task that depends on them. Such dependence cannot be assured, for the powers a task invokes cannot be experimentally controlled or constrained a priori, resulting in unknown vulnerability to failure of specificity and generalisability. Evaluating a compact version of Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices (RAPM), a widely used clinical test of fluid intelligence, we show that LaMa, a self-supervised artificial neural network trained solely on the completion of partially masked images of natural environmental scenes, achieves representative human-level test scores a prima vista, without any task-specific inductive bias or training. Compared with cohorts of healthy and focally lesioned participants, LaMa exhibits human-like variation with item difficulty, and produces errors characteristic of right frontal lobe damage under degradation of its ability to integrate global spatial patterns. LaMa's narrow training and limited capacity suggest matrix-style tests may be open to computationally simple solutions that need not necessarily invoke the substrates of reasoning.

This article presents a unique dataset comprising 419,135 intelligence assessment results. The study utilised the Polish adaptation of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale 5 during individual diagnostic sessions conducted under natural conditions. The research included children aged 3;0-18;11 of both genders who had been referred to support institutions (psychological-educational counselling centres, post-hospital clinics, hospital departments) by preschools or schools, or voluntarily requested by parents with their consent. The data collection spanned the entire country of Poland from 2018 to 2023. In addition to comprehensive intelligence assessment results, the dataset contains valuable demographic information, enabling in-depth analyses. The dataset's uniqueness lies in its impressive sample size, encompassing over four hundred thousand observations as well as the utilisation of time-consuming and thorough intelligence assessment procedures in settings that mimic the real world. Moreover, the context of the study is noteworthy, as the participants are individuals benefiting from the publicly - available Polish psychological support system.

We administered a computerized adaptive test of vocabulary three times to assess the verbal intelligence of chatGPT (GPT 3.5) and Bing (based on GPT 4). There was no difference between their performance; both performed at a high level, outperforming approximately 95% of humans and scoring above the level of native speakers with a doctoral degree. In 42% of test items that were administered more than once these large language models provided different answers to the same question in different sessions. They never engaged in guessing, but provided hallucinations: answers that were not among the options. Such hallucinations were not triggered by the inability to answer correctly as the same questions evoked correct answers in other sessions. The results implicate that psychometric tools developed for humans have limitations when assessing AI, but they also imply that computerised adaptive testing of verbal ability is an appropriate tool to critically evaluate the performance of large language models.

OBJECTIVE: Strong experimental evidence exists that several endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have neurobehavioral toxicity. However, evidence of associations between prenatal exposure and child's cognitive development is inconsistent. Moreover, toxicants are generally analyzed one by one without considering aggregate effects. We examined here the impact of a prenatal exposure to a mixture of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on intellectual abilities in preschool children, and compared their effects to those described in the literature. METHODS: Sixty-two children were included in a longitudinal cohort. Four organochlorine pesticides, four polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and seven perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were measured in cord blood. Intellectual abilities were assessed at 6 years of age using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence 4th ed. (WPPSI-IV). We examined the associations between a mixture of POPs and cognitive performances using principal components approach (PCA) and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression taking sex difference into account. RESULTS: No negative correlation was found when analyses were performed on boys and girls together. In sex-stratified analyses, lower scores in full scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) and fluid reasoning index (FRI) were observed in boys most exposed to a mixture of POPs. Increase of the WQS index was also associated with lower verbal comprehension index (VCI) scores in girls only. No other negative correlation was found using both WQS and PCA models. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests deleterious associations between antenatal exposure to a mixture of POPs and sex-specific cognitive level, clarifying some trends described in the literature.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates how congenital heart diseases (CHD) characteristics and interventions affect cognitive and verbal skills in Arab children, while also uncovering previously unexplored connections between these skills and the quality of life (QoL) scores as perceived by both children and parents. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Jordan, involving 62 children with CHD aged 6-16. Data were collected through standardized intelligence tests (namely The Raven's Progressive Matrices Test and The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children) and QoL assessments. RESULTS: Sex, disease severity, cyanosis, CHD defect status, conducted operations, and types of interventions did not significantly influence cognitive scores. However, a significant difference was observed in Wechsler's scores between cyanotic and non-cyanotic children (p < .01) and between severe and moderate cases (p = .01). Further, a significant positive correlation was identified between Wechsler's Scores and QoL reported by parents (r = 0.33, p < .01). This correlation was particularly pronounced in the social and school functioning dimensions of QoL. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the need for personalized care approaches for children with CHDs based on their individual characteristics. While cognitive abilities did not directly correlate with children's QoL reports, a significant positive correlation between verbal skills and QoL reported by parents underscores the importance of effective communication in assessing a child's overall well-being. Future research should further examine the cognitive development in this population, employing neurocognitive investigations and longitudinal studies to gain a deeper understanding of their cognitive profiles and trajectories.

Introduction: This study aims to use diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in conjunction with brain graph techniques to define brain structural connectivity and investigate its association with personal income (PI) in individuals of various ages and intelligence quotients (IQ). Methods: MRI examinations were performed on 55 male subjects (mean age: 40.1 ± 9.4 years). Graph data and metrics were generated, and DTI images were analyzed using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). All subjects underwent the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale for a reliable estimation of the full-scale IQ (FSIQ), which includes verbal comprehension index, perceptual reasoning index, working memory index, and processing speed index. The performance score was defined as the monthly PI normalized by the age of the subject. Results: The analysis of global graph metrics showed that modularity correlated positively with performance score (p = 0.003) and negatively with FSIQ (p = 0.04) and processing speed index (p = 0.005). No significant correlations were found between IQ indices and performance scores. Regional analysis of graph metrics showed modularity differences between right and left networks in sub-cortical (p = 0.001) and frontal (p = 0.044) networks. TBSS analysis showed greater axial and mean diffusivities in the high-performance group in correlation with their modular brain organization. Conclusion: This study showed that PI performance is strongly correlated with a modular organization of brain structural connectivity, which implies short and rapid networks, providing automatic and unconscious brain processing. Additionally, the lack of correlation between performance and IQ suggests a reduced role of academic reasoning skills in performance to the advantage of high uncertainty decision-making networks.

It is well-established that brain size is associated with intelligence. But the relationship between cortical morphometric measures and intelligence is unclear. Studies have produced conflicting results or no significant relations between intelligence and cortical morphometric measures such as cortical thickness and peri-cortical contrast. This discrepancy may be due to multicollinearity amongst the independent variables in a multivariate regression analysis, or a failure to fully account for the relationship between brain size and intelligence in some other way. Our study shows that neither cortical thickness nor peri-cortical contrast reliably improves IQ prediction accuracy beyond what is achieved with brain volume alone. We show this in multiple datasets, with child data, developmental data, and with adult data; we show this with data acquired either at multiple sites, or at a single site; we show this with data acquired with different MRI scanner manufacturers, or with all data acquired on a single scanner; and we show this with fluid intelligence, full-scale IQ, performance IQ, and verbal IQ. But our point is not really even about IQ; rather we proffer a methodological caveat and potential explanation of the discrepancies in previous results, and which applies broadly.

AIMS: The aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between adolescent IQ and midlife alcohol use and to explore possible mediators of this relationship. METHODS: Study data were from 6300 men and women who participated in the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study of high-school students graduating in 1957. IQ scores were collected during the participants' junior year of high school. In 2004, participants reported the number of alcoholic beverages consumed (past 30 days) and the number of binge-drinking episodes. A multinomial logistic regression was conducted to determine the relationship between adolescent IQ and future drinking pattern (abstainer, moderate drinker, or heavy drinker), and Poisson regression was used to examine the number of binge-drinking episodes. Two mediators-income and education-were also explored. RESULTS: Every one-point increase in IQ score was associated with a 1.6% increase in the likelihood of reporting moderate or heavy drinking as compared to abstinence. Those with higher IQ scores also had significantly fewer binge-drinking episodes. Household income, but not education, partially mediated the relationship between IQ and drinking pattern. CONCLUSIONS: The present study suggests that higher adolescent IQ may predict a higher likelihood of moderate or heavy drinking in midlife, but fewer binge-drinking episodes. The study also suggests that this relationship is mediated by other psychosocial factors, specifically income, prompting future exploration of mediators in subsequent studies.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) influences neurodevelopment. Thyroid homeostasis disruption is thought to be a possible underlying mechanism. However, current epidemiological evidence remains inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the effects of prenatal PFAS exposure on the intelligence quotient (IQ) of school-aged children and assess the potential mediating role of fetal thyroid function. METHODS: The study included 327 7-year-old children from the Sheyang Mini Birth Cohort Study (SMBCS). Cord serum samples were analyzed for 12 PFAS concentrations and 5 thyroid hormone (TH) levels. IQ was assessed using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Chinese Revised (WISC-CR). Generalized linear models (GLM) and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) were used to evaluate the individual and combined effects of prenatal PFAS exposure on IQ. Additionally, the impact on fetal thyroid function was examined using a GLM, and a mediation analysis was conducted to explore the potential mediating roles of this function. RESULTS: The molar sum concentration of perfluorinated carboxylic acids (ΣPFCA) in cord serum was significantly negatively associated with the performance IQ (PIQ) of 7-year-old children (ß = -6.21, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: -12.21, -0.21), with more pronounced associations observed among girls (ß = -9.57, 95 % CI: -18.33, -0.81) than in boys. Negative, albeit non-significant, cumulative effects were noted when considering PFAS mixture exposure. Prenatal exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorononanoic acid, and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid was positively associated with the total thyroxine/triiodothyronine ratio. However, no evidence supported the mediating role of thyroid function in the link between PFAS exposure and IQ. CONCLUSIONS: Increased prenatal exposure to PFASs negatively affected the IQ of school-aged children, whereas fetal thyroid function did not serve as a mediator in this relationship.

How Does the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children-II Stand the Test of Clinical Practice? Findings in 7- To 12-Year-Old Children Reliability and validity of the KABC-II were investigated in 646 children aged 7 to 12 years who had been assessed in four social pediatric centers and one pediatric clinic in Germany due to developmental, behavioral, or emotional disorders.The reliability of the global scales Fluid-Crystallized-Index (FCI) and Mental Processing Index (MPI) proved to be very high in all age groups, with values ≥ .96. Reliability values for the scales were above .85 for Sequential/ Gsm and Delayed Recall, and above .90 for the other scales. Relatively higher test scores were found for Learning/Glr in children with intellectual disability than in other scales. Findings for discriminative validity for clinical diagnostic groups and educational backgrounds were as expected, with the lowest intelligence scores for children with intellectual disabilities.The correlation between FCI and the full scale IQ of the SON-R 2.-7 was .73 in a longitudinal subsample. Divergent validity for behavioral variables was confirmed in a subsample by low and nonsignificant correlations with the CBCL/6-18R. With some limitations, psychometric data indicate the suitability of the KABC-II for individual clinical assessment.

Stereotype threat (ST) is a phenomenon that leads to decreased test performance and occurs when one deals with added pressure of being judged on the basis of stereotyped group membership. The ST effect has been previously investigated in many contexts but not in individuals with dyslexia who are often stereotyped as less intelligent. Prevalent use of intelligence tests in job selection processes and employment gap between people with dyslexia and those without warrants this investigation. Sixty-three participants (30 with dyslexia and 33 without dyslexia; mean age = 33.7; SD = 13.7; 47 F, 13 M, three non-binary) were asked to complete intelligence test typically used in selection processes. All participants were randomly assigned to one of three test instruction conditions: (1) they were told the test was diagnostic of their intelligence (ST triggering instruction); (2) test was a measure of their problem-solving skills (reduced threat); (3) or they were simply asked to take the test (control). Results showed that participants with dyslexia in ST condition performed poorer than those in other conditions and those in the same condition who did not have dyslexia. This study provides preliminary evidence for diminishing effects of ST in individuals with dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: Organophosphates and pyrethroids are two major groups of insecticides used for crop protection worldwide. They are neurotoxicants and exposure during vulnerable windows of brain development may have long-term impact on human neurodevelopment. Only few longitudinal studies have investigated associations between prenatal exposure to these substances and intelligence quotient (IQ) at school age in populations with low, mainly dietary, exposure. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between maternal urinary concentrations of insecticide metabolites at gestational week 28 and IQ in offspring at 7-years of age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data was derived from the Odense Child Cohort (OCC). Metabolites of chlorpyrifos (TCPy) and pyrethroids (3-PBA, cis- and trans-DCCA, 4-F-3PBA, cis-DBCA) were measured in maternal urine collected at gestational week (GW) 28. An abbreviated version of the Danish Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children fifth edition (WISC-V) consisting of four subtests to estimate full scale IQ (FSIQ) was administered by trained psychologists. Data were analyzed by use of multiple linear regression and adjusted for confounders. RESULTS: 812 mother/child-pairs were included. Median concentrations were 0.21 µg/L for 3-PBA, 1.67 µg/L for TCPy and the mean IQ for children were 99.4. Null association between maternal 3-PBA and child IQ at 7 years was seen, but with trends suggesting an inverse association. There was a significant association for maternal TCPy and child IQ at mid-level exposure. Trans-DCCA above the level of detection (LOD) was also associated with slightly lower child IQ, but the association was also not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: We found no significant associations between maternal 3-PBA metabolites and child IQ at 7 years, but with trends suggesting an inverse association. A non-significant trend between maternal TCPy exposure and child IQ in 7-year-children was seen even in this low exposed population. Given the widespread exposure and increasing use of insecticides, this should be elaborated in future studies.

Neuropsychological impairments are common in children with drug-resistant epilepsy. It has been proposed that epilepsy surgery might alleviate these impairments by providing seizure freedom; however, findings from prior studies have been inconsistent. We mapped long-term neuropsychological trajectories in children before and after undergoing epilepsy surgery, to measure the impact of disease course and surgery on functioning. We performed a retrospective cohort study of 882 children who had undergone epilepsy surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital (1990-2018). We extracted patient information and neuropsychological functioning [obtained from IQ tests (domains: full-scale IQ, verbal IQ, performance IQ, working memory and processing speed) and tests of academic attainment (reading, spelling and numeracy)] and investigated changes in functioning using regression analyses. We identified 500 children (248 females) who had undergone epilepsy surgery [median age at surgery = 11.9 years, interquartile range = (7.8, 15.0)] and neuropsychological assessment. These children showed declines in all domains of neuropsychological functioning in the time leading up to surgery (all P-values ≤0.001; e.g. ßFSIQ = -1.9, SEFSIQ = 0.3, PFSIQ < 0.001). Children lost on average one to four points per year, depending on the domain considered; 27%-43% declined by ≥10 points from their first to their last preoperative assessment. At the time of presurgical evaluation, most children (46%-60%) scored one or more standard deviations below the mean (<85) on the different neuropsychological domains; 37% of these met the threshold for intellectual disability (full-scale IQ < 70). On a group level, there was no change in performance from pre- to postoperative assessment on any of the domains (all P-values ≥0.128). However, children who became seizure free through surgery showed higher postoperative neuropsychological performance (e.g. rrb-FSIQ = 0.37, P < 0.001). These children continued to demonstrate improvements in neuropsychological functioning over the course of their long-term follow-up (e.g. ßFSIQ = 0.9, SEFSIQ = 0.3, PFSIQ = 0.004). Children who had discontinued antiseizure medication treatment at 1-year follow-up showed an 8- to 13-point advantage in postoperative working memory, processing speed and numeracy, and greater improvements in verbal IQ, working memory, reading and spelling (all P-values ≤0.034) over the postoperative period compared with children who were seizure free and still receiving antiseizure medication. In conclusion, by providing seizure freedom and the opportunity for antiseizure medication cessation, epilepsy surgery might not only halt but reverse the downward trajectory that children with drug-resistant epilepsy display in neuropsychological functioning. To halt this decline as soon as possible or, potentially, to prevent it from occurring in the first place, children with focal epilepsy should be considered for epilepsy surgery as early as possible after diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: With aging populations worldwide, identification of predictors of age-related cognitive decline is becoming increasingly important. The Danish Aging and Cognition Cohort (DanACo) including more than 5000 Danish men was established to investigate predictors of age-related cognitive decline from young adulthood to late mid-life. CONSTRUCTION AND CONTENT: The DanACo cohort was established through two separate data collections with identical designs involving a follow-up examination in late mid-life of men for whom intelligence test scores were available from their mandatory conscription board examination. The cohort consists of 5,183 men born from 1949 through 1961, with a mean age of 20.4 years at baseline and a mean age of 64.4 years at follow-up. The baseline measures consisted of height, weight, intelligence test score and educational level collected at the conscription board examination. The follow-up assessment consisted of a re-administration of the same intelligence test and a comprehensive questionnaire covering socio-demographic factors, lifestyle, and health-related factors. The data were collected in test sessions with up to 24 participants per session. Using the unique personal identification number assigned to all Danes, the cohort has been linked to data from national administrative and health registers for prospectively collected data on socioeconomic and health-related factors. UTILITY AND DISCUSSION: The DanACo cohort has some major strengths compared to existing cognitive aging cohorts such as a large sample size (n = 5,183 men), a validated global measure of cognitive ability, a long retest interval (mean 44.0 years) and the availability of prospectively collected data from registries as well as comprehensive questionnaire data. The main weakness is the low participation rate (14.3%) and that the cohort consists of men only. CONCLUSION: Cognitive decline is a result of a summary of factors across the life-course. The DanACo cohort is characterized by a long retest interval and contains data on a wealth of factors across adult life which is essential to establish evidence on predictors of cognitive decline. Moreover, the size of the cohort ensures sufficient statistical power to identify even relatively weak predictors of cognitive decline.

Cognitive reserve (CR) explains differential susceptibility of cognitive performance to neuropathology. However, as brain pathologies progress, cognitive decline occurs even in individuals with initially high CR. The interplay between the structural brain health (= level of brain reserve) and CR-related brain networks therefore requires further research. Our sample included 142 individuals aged 60-70 years. National Adult Reading Test intelligence quotient (NART-IQ) was our CR proxy. On an in-scanner Letter Sternberg task, we used ordinal trend (OrT) analysis to extract a task-related brain activation pattern (OrT slope) for each participant that captures increased expression with task load (one, three, and six letters). We assessed whether OrT slope represents a neural mechanism underlying CR by associating it with task performance and NART-IQ. Additionally, we investigated how the following brain reserve measures affect the association between NART-IQ and OrT slope: mean cortical thickness, total gray matter volume, and brain volumes proximal to the areas contained in the OrT patterns. We found that higher OrT slope was associated with better task performance and higher NART-IQ. Further, the brain reserve measures were not directly associated with OrT slope, but they affected the relationship between NART-IQ and OrT slope: NART-IQ was associated with OrT slope only in individuals with high brain reserve. The degree of brain reserve has an impact on how (and perhaps whether) CR can be implemented in brain networks in older individuals.

In previous magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies, children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been shown to respond differently to speech stimuli than typically developing (TD) children. Quantitative evaluation of this difference in responsiveness may support early diagnosis and intervention for ASD. The objective of this research is to investigate the relationship between syllable-induced P1m and social impairment in children with ASD and TD children. We analyzed 49 children with ASD aged 40-92 months and age-matched 26 TD children. We evaluated their social impairment by means of the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) and their intelligence ability using the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC). Multiple regression analysis with SRS score as the dependent variable and syllable-induced P1m latency or intensity and intelligence ability as explanatory variables revealed that SRS score was associated with syllable-induced P1m latency in the left hemisphere only in the TD group and not in the ASD group. A second finding was that increased leftward-lateralization of intensity was correlated with higher SRS scores only in the ASD group. These results provide valuable insights but also highlight the intricate nature of neural mechanisms and their relationship with autistic traits.

OBJECTIVES: To holistically evaluate neurodevelopmental outcomes and quality of life (QOL) of Japanese patients with biliary atresia (BA) and to investigate the factors associated with the outcomes. METHODS: This study enrolled patients with BA aged 5-18 years who visited Osaka University Hospital in 2021. Neurodevelopmental assessments were performed to evaluate intellectual ability, cognitive functions and adaptive skill levels. Furthermore, emotional and behavioral issues, characteristics of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and QOL were concomitantly assessed in the same cohort. Biochemical and social factors associated with the results were examined. RESULTS: Fifty-three patients, with a median age of 11.2 years were included in the analyses. Patients with BA had a significantly lower Full-Scale Intelligence Quotient or developmental quotient (FSIQ/DQ) score and Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale (VABS) composite score than the general Japanese population. Household education level and short stature were associated with low and borderline FSIQ/DQ and VABS composite scores, respectively. Among patients with low and borderline FSIQ/DQ scores, those with average or high VABS composite scores received significantly less neuroeducational care than those with low and borderline VABS composite scores. Despite the low FSIQ/DQ and VABS composite scores, the total QOL scores were higher than those of the general population. CONCLUSION: Patients with BA had intellectual and behavioral impairments. Notably, patients with intellectual impairments are overlooked and not followed up, especially if adaptive skills are maintained.
