RESUMO

The alpine meadows of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have significant potential for storing soil carbon, which is important to global carbon sequestration. Grazing is a major threat to its potential for carbon sequestration. However, grazing poses a major threat to this potential by speeding up the breakdown of organic matter in the soil and releasing carbon, which may further lead to positive carbon-climate change feedback and threaten ecological security. Therefore, in order to accurately explore the driving mechanism and regulatory factors of soil organic matter decomposition in grazing alpine meadows on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, we took the grazing sample plots of typical alpine meadows as the research object and set up grazing intensities of different life cycles, aiming to explore the relationship and main regulatory factors of grazing on soil organic matter decomposition and soil microorganisms. The results show the following: (1) soil microorganisms, especially Acidobacteria and Acidobacteria, drove the decomposition of organic matter in the soil, thereby accelerating the release of soil carbon, which was not conducive to soil carbon sequestration in grassland; (2) the grazing triggering effect formed a positive feedback with soil microbial carbon release, accelerating the decomposition of organic matter and soil carbon loss; and (3) the grazing ban and light grazing were more conducive to slowing down soil organic matter decomposition and increasing soil carbon sequestration.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common complications of diabetes worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of DR in hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in Tibet and to identify risk factors that may influence the occurrence of DR. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in a third-class hospital in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The prevalence of DR in hospitalized patients with T2DM was measured. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis and receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis were used to investigate the risk factors for DR. RESULTS: The prevalence of DR was 29.3%. The duration of diabetes; concentrations of 25-OH-VitD3, hemoglobin, fasting insulin, alanine aminotransferase, total bilirubin, and creatinine; and HOMA-IR were significantly different between DR patients and non-DR patients (all P < 0.05). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression revealed that a longer duration of diabetes and lower 25-OH-VitD3 levels were associated with increased DR risk. RCS analysis suggested overall positive associations of the duration of diabetes and 25-OH-VitD3 concentrations with DR risk (P nonlinearity < 0.05). The turning points for the duration of diabetes and 25-OH-VitD3 concentrations were 5.1 years and 10.6 ng/mL, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve for the combination of the duration of diabetes and 25-OH-VitD3 levels were 79.4%, 69.4% and 0.764, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Given the high prevalence of DR in hospitalized patients with T2DM in Tibet, vitamin D supplementation seems to be important in the prevention of DR to some degree.

The ecology of the Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau is fragile, and the ecosystems in the region are difficult to remediate once damaged. Currently, landfilling is the mainstay of domestic waste disposal in China, and numerous, widely distributed county landfills exist. trace elements (TEs) in waste are gradually released with waste degradation and cannot be degraded in nature, affecting environmental quality and human health. To reduce the chance bias that exists in studies of individual landfills, we selected 11 representative county landfills in Tibet, total of 76 soil samples were collected, eight TEs (arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn)) were determined, and analysed for the current status of pollution, risk to human health, and sources of TEs to explore the impact of the landfills. The results showed that only a few landfills had individual TEs exceeding the risk screening value of the Soil Environmental Quality Risk Control Standard for Soil Contamination (GB 15618-2018) (pH > 7.5). Most of the soils around the landfills had moderate levels of pollution, but some individual landfills had higher levels, mainly due to Cd and Hg concentrations. Source analysis showed that Hg originated mainly from atmospheric transport; the other TEs came mainly from the weathering of soil parent material and bedrock. The potential risk from TEs to human health was low, and the risk to children was greater than the risk to adults. Among the three exposure routes, oral ingestion resulted in the highest carcinogenic risk and noncarcinogenic risk, with a contribution rate of more than 95%. Among the TEs, Ni had the highest carcinogenic risk, followed by Cr and As, and As had the highest noncarcinogenic risk.

Sheep were domesticated in the Fertile Crescent and then spread globally, where they have been encountering various environmental conditions. The Tibetan sheep has adapted to high altitudes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau over the past 3000 years. To explore genomic variants associated with high-altitude adaptation in Tibetan sheep, we analyzed Illumina short-reads of 994 whole genomes representing ∼ 60 sheep breeds/populations at varied altitudes, PacBio High fidelity (HiFi) reads of 13 breeds, and 96 transcriptomes from 12 sheep organs. Association testing between the inhabited altitudes and 34,298,967 variants was conducted to investigate the genetic architecture of altitude adaptation. Highly accurate HiFi reads were used to complement the current ovine reference assembly at the most significantly associated ß-globin locus and to validate the presence of two haplotypes A and B among 13 sheep breeds. The haplotype A carried two homologous gene clusters: (1) HBE1, HBE2, HBB-like, and HBBC, and (2) HBE1-like, HBE2-like, HBB-like, and HBB; while the haplotype B lacked the first cluster. The high-altitude sheep showed highly frequent or nearly fixed haplotype A, while the low-altitude sheep dominated by haplotype B. We further demonstrated that sheep with haplotype A had an increased hemoglobin-O2 affinity compared with those carrying haplotype B. Another highly associated genomic region contained the EGLN1 gene which showed varied expression between high-altitude and low-altitude sheep. Our results provide evidence that the rapid adaptive evolution of advantageous alleles play an important role in facilitating the environmental adaptation of Tibetan sheep.

With the development of desertification in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), aeolian sand becomes the remarkable local factor affecting the thermal state of permafrost along the Qinghai-Tibet Engineering Corridor (QTEC). In this study, a model experiment was conducted to analyze the impact of thickness and water content of aeolian sand on its thermal effect, and a hydro-thermo-vapor coupling model of frozen soil was carried out to reveal the heat transfer mechanism of the aeolian sand layer (ASL) with different thicknesses and its hydrothermal effect on permafrost. The results indicate that: (1) ASL with the thickness larger than 80 cm has the property of converting precipitation into soil water. The thicker the ASL, the more precipitation infiltrates and accumulates in the soil layer. (2) The cooling effect of ASL on permafrost results from the lower net surface radiation, causing the annual average surface heat flux shifting from heat inflow to heat outflow. The warming effect of ASL on permafrost results from the increasing convective heat accompanying the infiltrated precipitation. (3) As the ASL thickens, the thermal effect of ASL on permafrost gradually shifts from the cooling effect dominated by heat radiation and heat conduction to the warming effect dominated by precipitation infiltration and heat convection. The warming effect of thick ASL on permafrost requires a certain amount of years to manifest, and the critical thickness is suggested to be larger than 120 cm.

Four strains, designated dk4302T, dk4209, xlx-73T, and xlx-183, were isolated from Tibetan gazelle and red swamp crawfish collected from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Jiangxi Province, PR China. The strains were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile, mucoid, and yellow-pigmented. Strains dk4302T and dk4209 grew at 10-40 °C and pH 6.0-9.0, while strains xlx-73T/xlx-183 grew at 15-40 °C and pH 6.0-10.0. Both strains exhibited growth in the presence of up to 3.5 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences and 652 core genes, respectively, revealed that the four strains formed two distinct clusters in the genus Sphingobacterium. Strains dk4302T and dk4209 formed a distinct clade with Sphingobacterium hotanense XH4T and Sphingobacterium humi D1T. The most closely related strains to xlx-73T and xlx-183 were Sphingobacterium nematocida M-SX103T. The DNA G+C contents were 38.9 and 39.8 mol%. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between dk4302T and S. humi D1T and S. hotanense XH4T were 19.2 and 21.8 % (19.0 and 21.6 % for strain dk4209), respectively. The corresponding average nucleotide identity (ANI) values were 74.3 and 78.1 % (74.4 and 78.3 % for strain dk4209), respectively. The dDDH values between xlx-73T (xlx-183) and S. nematocida M-SX103T was 24.6 % (25.7 %). The corresponding ANI value was 85.7 % (85.5 % for strain xlx-183). The major fatty acid and respiratory quinone of dk4302T and xlx-73T were iso-C15:0 and MK7. The polar lipids identified in all of the novel strains were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphoglycolipids, aminophospholipids, and phospholipids. A total of 61/190 (32.1 %) and 82/190 (43.2 %) carbon substrates were metabolized by strains dk4302T and xlx-73T in the Biolog MicroPlates, respectively. Based on the results from this polyphasic taxonomic study, two novel species in the genus Sphingobacteruim are proposed, namely Sphingobacteruim zhuxiongii sp. nov. (type strain dk4302T=CGMCC 1.16795T=JCM 33600T) and Sphingobacteruimluzhongxinii sp. nov. (type strain xlx-73T=GDMCC 1.1712T=JCM 33886T).

RATIONALE: Shewanella algae are Gram-negative bacteria that are widely found in aquatic habitats and rarely cause lung infections in inland areas. PATIENT CONCERNS: Cough with light-yellow phlegm for 2 weeks. DIAGNOSES: The final diagnosis was bacterial pneumonia. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated with ceftazidime (2 g, every 12 h) for 1 week. OUTCOMES: The patient's lung infection improved and he was discharged. LESSONS: This case highlights a rare occurrence of lung infection caused by Shewanella algae in elderly Tibetan men residing in non-marine environments.

Ovine contagious pustular dermatitis (ORF) is one of the main diseases of sheep and is a zoonotic disease caused by Ovine contagious pustular dermatitis virus (ORFV) infection, posing a significant constraint on sheep breeding industry and human health. The Tibetan medical formulation composed of Polygonum leucoides, Polygonum xanthoxylum and Acanthophora rotunda significantly regulated lymphocyte immune function following ORFV stimulation, although the mechanism remains unclear. In order to study the immunomodulatory effects and mechanism of three Tibetan medicinal extracts (Polygonum leucoides, Polygonum xanthoxylum, and Acanthophora rotunda) against ORFV in vitro, sheep peripheral blood lymphocytes were isolated in vitro and treated with different concentrations of Tibetan medicine compound extract solution after ORFV infection. The cytokine expression levels in lymphocytes were measured at 4 h, 8 h and 12 h. Additionally endogenous metabolites in lymphocytes at 0 h, 4 h, 8 h and 12 h were quantified by untargeted metabolomics method. The results showed that, the extracts could regulate the lymphocyte immune factors altered by ORFV, and regulate the lymphocyte immune function through cysteine and methionine metabolic pathways as well as the pyrimidine metabolic pathways, potentially alleviating the immune evasion induced by ORFV.

The magnitude of terrestrial carbon (C)-climate feedback largely depends on the temperature sensitivity of soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition (Q10). However, our understanding of determinants of Q10 for SOM fractions such as particulate and mineral-associated organic matter (POM and MAOM, respectively) is still inadequate. Particularly, it remains unclear whether microbial effects on Q10 are fraction-dependent, which induces large uncertainties in projecting soil C dynamics. Here, we conducted large-scale topsoil sampling on the Tibetan Plateau, in combination with SOM fractionation and 300-day laboratory incubation to assess SOM fraction-dependent linkages between Q10 and microbial properties. We found that compared with MAOM, POM had larger Q10 and greater microbial diversity, and also structured distinct microbial communities as well as their co-occurrence patterns. Furthermore, associations of Q10 with microbial properties differed between the two SOM fractions. Bacterial community composition and relative abundance of bacterial keystone taxa affected Q10 for POM and MAOM respectively, while bacterial alpha diversity showed opposite relationships with Q10 for POM and MAOM. These findings highlight the necessity of incorporating SOM fraction-dependent microbial properties and their linkages with Q10 into Earth system models to accurately predict terrestrial C-climate feedback.

Tibetan sheep are vital to the ecosystem and livelihood of the Tibetan Plateau; however, traditional breeding methods limit their production and growth. Modern molecular breeding techniques are required to improve these traits. This study identified a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in myostatin (MSTN) and Callipyge in Tibetan sheep. The findings indicated notable associations between MSTN genotypes and growth traits including birth weight (BW), body length (BL), chest width (ChW), and chest circumference (ChC), as well as a particularly strong association with cannon circumference (CaC) at 2 months of age. Conversely, Callipyge polymorphisms did not have a significant impact on Tibetan sheep. Moreover, the analyses revealed a significant association between sex and BW or hip width (HW) at 2 months of age and ChW, ChC, and CaC at 4 months of age. Furthermore, the study's results suggested that the genotype of MSTN as a GA was associated with a notable sex effect on BW, while the genotype of Callipyge (CC) showed a significant impact of sex on CaC at 2 months of age. These results indicated that the SNP of MSTN could potentially serve as a molecular marker for early growth traits in Tibetan sheep.

To understand the soil toxic and hazardous elements content, pollution level, and ecological risk status in the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, we collected and analyzed 8273 sets of surface soil samples. Evaluations were conducted using the single-factor pollution index, geo-accumulation, pollution load, and potential ecological risk indices, and source identification correlation and principal component analysis. The results revealed that, compared with the background levels in China, the accumulation of soil arsenic, cadmium, nickel, and chromium was greater in the surface soil of the study area. Additionally, in comparison with Qinghai Province, more mercury accumulated in the surface soil of the study area and owing to the influence of anthropogenic activities. Benchmarking against soil environmental quality standards, the study area exhibited pollution control zones primarily dominated by arsenic and cadmium (3.9%). The spatial distribution revealed distinct zones: a ridge mountain type characterized by arsenic-cadmium-chromium-nickel, a Daban mountain type with solely cadmium presence, and a Longyangxia-Jianzha South type dominated by arsenic. Compared with the Qinghai Province soil background values, evaluations using the Pollution loading index, Geological Cumulative Index, and Potential Ecological Risk Index methods revealed varying degrees of potentially toxic element content exceedance. From an ecological risk perspective, the individual element with the highest potential ecological risk coefficients were mercury, followed by cadmium and arsenic; however, the region's overall ecological risk index was classified as low. Three distinct sources were identified: natural sources leading to high background levels of chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, and mercury; mixed natural and industrial/agricultural sources contributing to elevated cadmium levels; and human activity-related mercury enrichment. Based on the evaluation results, synergistic monitoring of soil and biota in naturally occurring risk zones is recommended to ensure the safety of agricultural and pastoral products. Additionally, ecological impact assessments and pollution source mitigation studies should be conducted in regions influenced by human activities to curb the further degradation of soil ecological quality.

Alpine grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) play an essential role in water conservation, biodiversity protection and climate feedback, with aboveground biomass (AGB) serving as a crucial indicator of grassland health and functionality. While previous studies have independently explored the phenological differences, cumulative effects, and spatial variability of climatic impacts on biomass/productivity in alpine grasslands, the cascading effects regarding climate and phenology on AGB still present knowledge gaps. Here, using peak AGB measurements, remote sensing and gridded climate data in the QTP alpine grasslands during 2002-2018, we systematically analyzed the impact paths of climatic variables (i.e., cumulative precipitation, CP; growing degree-days, GDD) and phenology-mediated paths (start and peak date of the growing season, SOS and POS) on AGB and their regional differences. During the preseason (pre60) or the growing season (sos-pos), climate primarily directly impacted variations in AGB across different climatic regions, although a phenology-mediated path by which climate indirectly affected AGB existed (i.e., GDDsos-pos â†’ POS â†’ AGB). Three general patterns were revealed: In the plateau temperate arid regions, an increase in CPpre60 significantly promoted AGB (path coefficients w = 0.61-0.71), whereas an increase in GDDpre60 inhibited AGB (w = -0.42 ~ -0.49); In the plateau sub-cold regions, increases in both CPsos-pos and GDDsos-pos significantly promoted AGB, respectively (w = 0.46-0.81 and w = 0.37-0.70); Similarly, in the plateau temperate arid or semi-arid regions, increases in CPsos-pos also significantly promoted the AGB (w = 0.56-0.73). This study highlights that the water and heat accumulation mainly exert direct impacts on alpine grassland AGB across various climatic regions and phenological stages, providing insights into the mechanism driving AGB by climate and phenology during spring and summer.

Microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) are crucial parameters reflecting soil C and N sequestration. Concerns about how artificial activities disturb alpine meadow ecosystem are increasing, but the knowledge of variances in microbial CUE and NUE in response to turf storage remains scarce. Here, we conducted a turf storage experiment on the Tibetan Plateau with two common storage methods, laying turfs method (LT) and stacking turfs method (ST). Plant litter, aboveground and belowground biomass declined considerably in the LT and ST than those in natural meadow. Soil pH and available phosphorus were significantly lower, but soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, and available nitrogen were substantially higher in stored turfs (both ST and LT) than in natural meadow. These results led to a differentiation in nutrient status among treatments. Vetor model indicated a stronger C limitation (vector length > 0.61) in ST than that in the LT and a shift from N to P limitation (vector angle >55°) in all stored turfs. Microbial CUE was prominently higher in the LT than those in the ST, signifying that microbes allocated more exogenous C to self-growth in the LT. Microbial NUE declined considerably in stored turfs, indicating a great proportion of N used for catabolic process instead of anabolic process. Microbial CUE and NUE were tightly linked to nutrient content and availability, enzymatic stoichiometry, microbial traits and plant biomass. Our results suggest that variations in microbial CUE and NUE were indirectly regulated by soil physicochemical properties via mediating nutrient imbalance and enzymatic stoichiometry in stored turfs.

Six novel bacterial strains, designated N016T, N017, N022T, N028, N056T, and N064, were isolated from soil sampled on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Cells were aerobic, orange or yellow, globular or rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming, Gram-stain-positive, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. All the isolates were salt-tolerant and could grow in the range of 4-42 °C. Results of phylogenomic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and core genomic genes showed that the three pairs of strains (N016T/N017, N022T/N028, and N056T/N064) were closely related to the members of the genus Planococcus, and clustered with Planococcus ruber, Planococcus glaciei, and Planococcus chinensis. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values of the six novel strains with other members of the genus Planococcus were within the ranges of 18.7-53 % and 70.58-93.49 %, respectively, all below the respective recommended thresholds of 70.0 % and 95-96 %. The genomic DNA G+C content of the six strains ranged from 43.5 to 46.0 mol%. The major fatty acids of the six strains were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C14 : 0, and C16 : 1 ω7c alcohol. The predominant polar lipids of strains N016T, N022T, and N056T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylethanolamine. Menaquinones 7 and 8 were the respiratory quinones. The results of the above analyses indicated that the six strains represent three novel species of the genus Planococcus, for which the names Planococcus shenhongbingii sp. nov. (type strain N016T=GDMCC 1.4062T=JCM 36224T), Planococcus shixiaomingii sp. nov. (type strain N022T=GDMCC 1.4063T=JCM 36225T), and Planococcus liqunii sp. nov. (type strain N056T=GDMCC 1.4064T=JCM 36226T) are proposed.

Genus Thermus is the main focus of researcher among the thermophiles. Members of this genus are the inhabitants of both natural and artificial thermal environments. We performed phylogenomic analyses and comparative genomic studies to unravel the genomic diversity among the strains belonging to the genus Thermus in geographically different thermal springs. Sixteen Thermus strains were isolated and sequenced from hot springs, Qucai hot springs in Tibet and Tengchong hot springs in Yunnan, China. 16S rRNA gene based phylogeny and phylogenomic analyses based on concatenated set of 971 Orthologous Protein Families (supermatrix and gene content methods) revealed a mixed distribution of the Thermus strains. Whole genome based phylogenetic analysis showed, all 16 Thermus strains belong to five species; Thermus oshimai (YIM QC-2-109, YIM 1640, YIM 1627, 77359, 77923, 77838), Thermus antranikianii (YIM 73052, 77412, 77311, 71206), Thermus brokianus (YIM 73518, 71318, 72351), Thermus hydrothermalis (YIM 730264 and 77927) and one potential novel species 77420 forming clade with Thermus thalpophilus SYSU G00506T. Although the genomes of different strains of Thermus of same species were highly similar in their metabolic pathways, but subtle differences were found. CRISPR loci were detected through genome-wide screening, which showed that Thermus isolates from two different thermal locations had well developed defense system against viruses and adopt similar strategy for survival. Additionally, comparative genome analysis screened competence loci across all the Thermus genomes which could be helpful to acquire DNA from environment. In the present study it was found that Thermus isolates use two mechanism of incomplete denitrification pathway, some Thermus strains produces nitric oxide while others nitrious oxide (dinitrogen oxide), which show the heterotrophic lifestyle of Thermus genus. All isolated organisms encoded complete pathways for glycolysis, tricarboxylic acid and pentose phosphate. Calvin Benson Bassham cycle genes were identified in genomes of T. oshimai and T. antranikianii strains, while genomes of all T. brokianus strains and organism 77420 were lacking. Arsenic, cadmium and cobalt-zinc-cadmium resistant genes were detected in genomes of all sequenced Thermus strains. Strains 77,420, 77,311, 73,518, 77,412 and 72,351 genomes were found harboring genes for siderophores production. Sox gene clusters were identified in all sequenced genomes, except strain YIM 730264, suggesting a mode of chemolithotrophy. Through the comparative genomic analysis, we also identified 77420 as the genome type species and its validity as novel organism was confirmed by whole genome sequences comparison. Although isolate 77420 had 99.0% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with T. thalpophilus SYSU G00506T but based on ANI 95.86% (Jspecies) and digital DDH 68.80% (GGDC) values differentiate it as a potential novel species. Similarly, in the phylogenomic tree, the novel isolate 77,420 forming a separate branch with their closest reference type strain T. thalpophilus SYSU G00506T.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: H-type hypertension is essential hypertension combined with high homocysteine, and both synergistically increase the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk factors of H-type hypertension in Tibetan plateau population and correlation with MTHFR C677T gene. METHODS AND RESULTS: A multi-stage cluster random sampling method was used to select the research subjects in Tibet Autonomous Region from June 2020 to November 2021. Among Tibetans, the incidence of H-type hypertension accounted for 84.31% of hypertensive patients. The logistic regression analysis demonstrated that age, uric acid (UA), triglyceride (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were risk factors for the prevalence of H-type hypertension, the OR (95% CI) was 1.083(1.073-1.094), 1.002(1.001-1.004), 1.240(1.050-1.464) and 2.274(1.432-3.611), respectively. MTHFR C677T TT genotype patients with H-type hypertension OR (95% CI) was 1.629(1.004-2.643). Based on this, a nomogram model was established, and the reliability of the model was proved by area under ROC curve, Brier score and average absolute error. The model's results indicate that for every five years of age, the score increases by 6 points; for a 2mmol/L increase in TG, the score increases by 5.5 points; for a 1mmol/L increase in LDL-C, the score increases by 10 points; and individuals with the TT genotype receive 8 points. The higher the score, the greater the risk of disease. CONCLUSION: The MTHFR C677T TT genotype is a risk locus for Tibetan patients with H-type hypertension, with age, TG, and LDL-C were identified as risk factors for the disease.

Atmospheric microplastics are important contributors to environmental contamination in aquatic and terrestrial systems and pose potential ecological risks. However, studies on atmospheric microplastics are still limited in urban regions of the Tibetan Plateau, a sentinel region for climate and environmental change under a warming climate. In this study, the occurrence and potential ecological risk of atmospheric microplastics were investigated in samples of suspended atmospheric microplastics collected in Lhasa city during the Tibetan New Year in February 2023. The results show that the average abundance of atmospheric microplastics in Lhasa was 7.15 ± 2.46 MPs m-3. The sizes of the detected microplastics ranged from 20.34 to 297.18 µm, approximately 87% of which were smaller than 100 µm. Fragmented microplastics (95.76%) were the dominant shape, followed by fibres (3.75%) and pellets (0.49%). The primary polymer chemical components identified were polyamide (68.73%) and polystyrene (16.61%). The analysis of meteorological data and the backwards trajectory model indicated the air mass in Lhasa mainly controlled by westwards, and the atmospheric microplastics mainly originated from long-distance atmospheric transport. The potential ecological risk index assessment revealed that the atmospheric microplastic pollution in Lhasa was relatively low. This study provides valuable insights and a scientific foundation for future research on the prevention and control of atmospheric microplastic pollution in Lhasa and other ecologically sensitive cities.

In this study, we used 16S high-throughput sequencing to investigate the effects of uranium mining on the rhizospheric bacterial communities and functions of three local plant species, namely, Artemisia frigida, Acorus tatarionwii Schott., and Salix oritrepha Schneid. The results showed that uranium mining significantly reduced the diversity of rhizospheric bacteria in the three local plant species, including the Shannon index and Simpson index (P < 0.05). Interestingly, we found that Sphingomonas and Pseudotrichobacter were enriched in the rhizosphere soil of the three local plants from uranium mining areas, indicating their important ecological role. The three plants were enriched in various dominant rhizospheric bacterial populations in the uranium mining area, including Vicinamidobacteriaceae, Nocardioides, and Gaiella, which may be related to the unique microecological environment of the plant rhizosphere. The rhizospheric bacterial community of A. tatarionwii plants from tailings and open-pit mines also showed a certain degree of differentiation, indicating that uranium mining is the main factor driving the differentiation of plant rhizosphere soil communities on the plateau. Functional prediction revealed that rhizospheric bacteria from different plants have developed different functions to cope with stress caused by uranium mining activities, including enhancing the translational antagonist Rof, the translation initiation factor 2B subunit, etc. This study explores for the first time the impact of plateau uranium mining activities on the rhizosphere microecology of local plants, promoting the establishment of effective soil microecological health monitoring indicators, and providing a reference for further soil pollution remediation in plateau uranium mining areas.

Climate change is threatening fragile alpine ecosystems and their resident ungulates, particularly the wild yak (Bos mutus) that inhabits alpine areas between the tree line and glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau. Although wild yaks tend to shift habitats in response to changes in climatic factors, the precise impacts of climate change on their habitat distribution and climate refugia remain unclear. Based on over 1000 occurrence records, the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) algorithm was applied to simulate habitat ranges in the last glacial maximum (LGM), Mid-Holocene, current stage, and three greenhouse gas emission scenarios in 2070. Three habitat patches were identified as climate refugia for wild yaks that have persisted from the LGM to the present and are projected to persist until 2070. These stable areas account for approximately 64% of the current wild yak habitat extent and are sufficiently large to support viable populations. The long-term persistence of these climate refugia areas is primarily attributed to the unique alpine environmental features of the Tibetan Plateau, where relatively stable arid or semi-arid climates are maintained, and a wide range of forage resource supplies are available. However, habitat loss by 2070 caused by insufficient protection is predicted to lead to severe fragmentation in the southeastern and northwestern Kunlun, Hengduan, central-western Qilian, and southern Tanggula-northern Himalaya Mountains. Habitat disturbance has also been caused by increasing anthropogenic effects in the southern Tanggula and northern Himalaya Mountains. We suggest that sufficient protection, transboundary cooperation, and community involvement are required to improve wild yak conservation efforts. Our combined modeling method (MaxEnt-Zonation-Linkage Mapper-FRAGSTAT) can be utilized to identify priority areas and linkages between habitat patches while assessing the conservation efficiency of protected areas and analyzing the coupled relationship between climate change and anthropogenic impacts on the habitat distribution of endangered species.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive decline represents a critical clinical and public health issue that adversely affects the quality of life for older patients and their families. This concern was exacerbated by the reduced engagement in outdoor activities among seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic, presenting substantial challenges to aging societies. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of health qigong combined with Tibetan dance on working memory in middle-aged and elderly women, and to determine its potential as a preventive strategy against cognitive disorders. METHODS: A pilot study was conducted to compare the effects of a Health Qigong exercise intervention with those of everyday life and sports routines. The primary outcome measure was working memory assessed using a 2-Back working memory task research paradigm. Between July and September 2021, a total of 33 women were divided into four groups: two middle-aged groups (N = 18, with 8 women in the experimental group and 10 in the control group) and two elderly groups (N = 15, with 7 in the experimental group and 8 in the control group). Participants in the experimental groups underwent a 10-week intervention, consisting of three 60-min sessions per week. Each session included a warm-up, Health Qigong combined with Tibetan dance, and a cool-down. Throughout the study, all participants continued their daily routines. Response times and error rates were analyzed using a mixed-design repeated-measures analysis of variance. RESULTS: A simple effects analysis revealed that Health Qigong combined with Tibetan dance significantly enhanced 2-Back response time and error rate in the middle-aged group. In contrast, the 2-Back error rate significantly increased in the elderly control group that did not receive the intervention (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Health Qigong demonstrates beneficial effects on middle-aged and elderly women. Combining Health Qigong with dance may serve as a preventive measure against cognitive disorders. This pioneering study conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, assesses the new possibility of Health Qigong and dance, with the objective to offer more diverse indoor exercise options for middle-aged and elderly women.
