ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The study was designed to investigate the potential effect of fish consumption on macular structure and function of healthy individuals. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The participants were Greek, who used to consume less than one portion of fish per week since their childhood. All participants underwent body mass index (BMI) measurements and ophthalmological examination. At their first examination, they were asked to consume at least 2 portions of fish per week over a period of 8 weeks, after which all the measurements were repeated. RESULTS: Eighteen healthy individuals (36 eyes) participated in this study. The central macular thickness was reduced, while the amplitudes in the foveal and parafoveal area were increased after the fish consumption. However, all measurements remained within the normal range at both visits. CONCLUSIONS: Regular fish consumption could enhance the structural and functional status of the macula.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate CXCL-1 chemokine levels in the vitreous during rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) with and without proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and identify possible correlations with clinical parameters (extent and duration or RRD and PVR grade). Vitreous samples from patients with primary RRD with or without PVR were collected and assayed using a double antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Eleven vitreous samples from organ donors were employed as a control group. CXCL-1 levels were measured in 35 vitreous samples from 35 RRD patients. Mean CXCL-1 levels (64·82 ± 6·47 pg/ml) were significantly higher (P = 0·048) compared to controls. There was a significant positive correlation between CXCL-1 levels and the extent of the detachment (r = 0·794, P = 0·006). Peak CXCL-1 levels coincided with 3+ quadrant RRD, an interim of 29-60 days' duration and PVR grade B. Increased CXCL-1 levels may be indicative of mild inflammation in the detached retina and the adjacent vitreous. The results of the present study may provide novel insight into the complex interactions taking place during the early and late stages of RRD complicated by PVR.

ABSTRACT

Small cell lung cancer is characterized by rapid growth and early metastasis. Despite its sensitivity to cytotoxic therapy, until now treatments have failed to control or cure this disease in most patients. Orbital metastases are a rare manifestation of systemic malignancies. Breast and lung cancers represent more than two thirds of the primary cancer sites. Metastases to the eye and orbit develop in approximately 0.7-12% of patients with lung cancer. Here, we report a rare case of exophthalmos as the first manifestation of a metastatic carcinoma due to small cell lung cancer, and a 6-months follow-up with complete exophthalmic response to chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To report a case of sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) following purulent postoperative endophthalmitis and final evisceration of the affected eye. METHODS-RESULTS: A 64-year-old male underwent phacoemulsification complicated by endophthalmitis. Five months latter the eye was painful and had no light perception so an evisceration was performed. Two weeks latter granulomatous posterior uveitis developed in the fellow eye. SO was diagnosed and the patient was started on prednisone and cyclosporine. The inflammation subsided and visual acuity improved to 20/30. CONCLUSIONS: Bacterial endophthalmitis cannot prevent the development of SO. Prompt diagnosis and management is the most important factor for visual prognosis.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To describe the tomographic findings of a case of myopic traction maculopathy using Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) and present the results of its surgical intervention. DESIGN: Observational case report and review of the literature. METHODS: A 61-year-old male with metamorphopsia was examined clinically and with the use of SD-OCT. The diagnosis of myopic traction maculopathy was made. The patient underwent pars plana vitrectomy with removal of the vitreomacular adhesions, the epiretinal and the internal limiting membrane. RESULTS: Visual acuity increased by two Snellen lines, metamorphopsia disappeared, macular morphology was improved and myopic traction maculopathy was resolved. CONCLUSIONS: Imaging with SD-OCT is capable of documentation and measurement of the early stages of myopic traction maculopathy. Moreover, vitrectomy was beneficial for the visual and anatomic outcome of the patient.
