ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nutrient-rich cheese supplements were demonstrated to have improvements in markers of sarcopenia in healthy elders. However, the potential effects of cheese in individuals with possible sarcopenia remain unknown. METHOD: This 90-day randomized controlled trial (RCT) included 68 women aged 60-80 years with possible sarcopenia in China, who were randomly assigned to three groups: Control group (CG), Original cheese group (OG: 9.0 g protein; 322.8 mg calcium), and Golden cheese group (GG: 12.7 g protein; 802.1 mg calcium). OG and GG were instructed to consume their habitual diet along with 4 slices of supplied cheese, while CG was directed to maintain their usual dietary habits. Face-to-face interviews, anthropometric measurements, and blood sample collection were conducted at baseline, midway (60 days), and the end of the trial. RESULT: At the end of the trial, the primary outcome, changes of Skeletal Muscle Mass Index (SMI) were found to be higher in OG (0.18 ± 0.02 kg/m2) and GG (0.14 ± 0.02 kg/m2) compared to CG (0.09 ± 0.02 kg/m2). The secondary outcome, changes of handgrip strength were higher in GG (1.82 ± 4.16 kg) than CG (-0.61 ± 3.78 kg). There were no significant differences in makers for muscle function between three groups (P > 0.05). In the self-comparison, Creatinine/Cystatin C significantly increased in both OG and GG. In addition, OG had a significant increase in changes of free and total carnitine compared to CG. CONCLUSION: Both golden and original cheese supplementation enhanced muscle strength and mass in older women with possible sarcopenia. The mechanism behind this effect may be linked to muscle cell energy metabolism. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The present study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry with the registration number ChiCTR2300078720 (retrospectively registered, 20231215).

ABSTRACT

Microsatellite instability (MSI) status is a prognostic biomarker for immunotherapy in certain types of cancers, such as colorectal cancers (CRCs) and endometrial cancers (ECs). Tumors that are categorized as having high MSI (MSI-H) express high levels of neoantigens for immune recognition. The typical MSI test measures the length of short mononucleotide repeats (SMR) poly(A) 21-27; however, a limitation of this test is the difficulty in determining the shift size, particularly in endometrial cancer. To investigate an MSI detection assay with improved performance, the present study analyzed the use of poly(A) 40-44 mononucleotide repeats to detect the MSI status of 100 patients with either CRC (n=50) or EC (n=50). Capillary electrophoresis was used to evaluate five long mononucleotide repeat (LMR) markers, including poly(A) 40-A, 40-B, 40-C, 40-D and 44. The concordance rate of the LMR-MSI assay compared with an immunohistochemistry MSI detection assay was 96.0 and 95.1% for CRCs and ECs respectively, with the detection limit of the LMR-MSI assay demonstrated to be 2.5% MSI-H in HCT116 colorectal carcinoma cell lines. The LMR-MSI assay yielded a 95.1% concordance rate in ECs compared with that in the SMR-MSI test (87.8%). The LMR-MSI test identified a significantly higher mean shift size (13 bp) in MSI-H tumors compared with the SMR-MSI test (10 bp), in both EC and CRC tissue samples. Together, the present study suggested that the LMR-MSI test could potentially be a sensitive and practical technology for molecular laboratory testing, particularly in the use of immunotherapy for patients with CRCs and ECs.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Older adults with multimorbidity are at high risk of cognitive impairment development. There is a lack of research on the associations between different multimorbidity measures and cognitive function among older Chinese adults living in the community. METHODS: We used the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey from 2002 to 2018 and included data on dementia-free participants aged ≥65 years. Multimorbidity measures included condition counts, multimorbidity patterns, and trajectories. The association of multimorbidity measures with cognitive function was examined by generalized estimating equation and linear and logistic regression models. RESULTS: Among 14,093 participants at baseline, 43.2% had multimorbidity. Multimorbidity patterns were grouped into cancer-inflammatory, cardiometabolic, and sensory patterns. Multimorbidity trajectories were classified as "onset-condition," "newly developing," and "severe condition." The Mini-Mental State Examination scores were significantly lower for participants with more chronic conditions, with cancer-inflammatory/cardiometabolic/sensory patterns, and with developing multimorbidity trajectories. DISCUSSION: Condition counts, sensory pattern, cardiometabolic pattern, cancer-inflammatory pattern, and multimorbidity developmental trajectories were prospectively associated with cognitive function. HIGHLIGHTS: Elderly individuals with a higher number of chronic conditions were associated with lower MMSE scores in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey data. MMSE scores were significantly lower for participants with specific multimorbidity patterns. Individuals with developing trajectories of multimorbidity were associated with lower MMSE scores and a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment.

ABSTRACT

Stress granules (SGs) are membrane-less cellular compartments which are dynamically assembled via biomolecular condensation mechanism when eukaryotic cells encounter environmental stresses. SGs are important for gene expression and cell fate regulation. Dysregulation of SG homeostasis has been linked to human neurodegenerative disorders, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Here we report that the HRD1-SEL1L ubiquitin ligase complex specifically regulates the homeostasis of heat shock-induced SGs through the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) and the UPS-associated ATPase p97. Mechanistically, the HRD1-SEL1L complex mediates SG homeostasis through the BiP-coupled PERK-eIF2α signaling axis of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, thereby coordinating the unfolded protein response (UPR) with SG dynamics. Furthermore, we show that the distinctive branches of ER stress play differential roles in SG homeostasis. Our study indicates that the UPS and the UPR together via the HRD1-SEL1L ubiquitin ligase to maintain SG homeostasis in a stressor-dependent manner.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are important indicators of healthcare quality. The aseptic non touch technique (ANTT), a standardised aseptic technique, is a crucial preventative measure against HAIs. However, there is insufficient evidence currently available regarding ANTT awareness and proficiency among nurses. This study aimed to investigate the status of ANTT proficiency in a cohort of nurses and analyse the associated risk factors, with the ultimate goal of providing a reference for promoting the application of ANTT in clinical practice. METHODS: The study population was sampled from nurses working in a tertiary hospital in Zhejiang Province, China, in January 2024. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a self-designed questionnaire to assess ANTT knowledge. Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to analyse the risk factors influencing ANTT knowledge in nurses. RESULTS: A total of 458 nurses were included in this study. The cohort had an overall score of 49.7% correct responses on the ANTT knowledge questionnaire, with a mean score of 12.4 ± 2.4 out of 25, and 30.1% of the nurses felt that they did not need training related to ANTT. Multivariate linear regression analysis indicated that professional title, educational level, and the need for ANTT training were independently associated with ANTT knowledge in nurses. Nurses with Master's degrees and associated chief nurses were observed to have higher levels of ANTT knowledge compared to the rest. CONCLUSIONS: ANTT knowledge is insufficient among nurses in China, and its importance is not widely recognised. Continuous efforts are required to strengthen this knowledge. Constructing sustained, multiform, and stratified training programmes may represent an effective method to strengthen ANTT knowledge among nurses and promote its clinical use.

BACKGROUND: HOIP is the catalytic subunit of the E3 ligase complex (linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex), which is able to generate linear ubiquitin chains. However, the role of rare HOIP functionally deficient variants remains unclear. The pathogenic mechanism and the relationship with immune deficiency phenotypes remain to be clarified. METHODS: Based on a next-generation sequencing panel of 270 genes, we identified a HOIP deletion variant that causes common variable immunodeficiency disease. Bioinformatics analysis and cell-based experiments were performed to study the molecular mechanism by which the variant causes immunodeficiency diseases. FINDINGS: A homozygous loss-of-function variant in HOIP was identified. The variant causes a frameshift and generates a premature termination codon in messenger RNA, resulting in a C-terminal truncated HOIP mutant, that is, the loss of the linear ubiquitin chain-specific catalytic domain. The truncated HOIP mutant has impaired E3 ligase function in linear ubiquitination, leading to the suppression of canonical NF-κB signalling and increased TNF-induced multiple forms of cell death. INTERPRETATION: The loss-of-function HOIP variant accounts for the immune deficiencies. The canonical NF-κB pathway and cell death are involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. RESEARCH IN CONTEXT: Evidence before this study LUBAC is the only known linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex for which HOIP is an essential catalytic subunit. Three HOIP variants have now been identified in two immunodeficient patients and functionally characterised. However, there have been no reports on the pathogenicity of only catalytic domain deletion variants in humans, or the pathogenic mechanisms of catalytic domain deletion variants. Added value of this study We report the first case of an autosomal recessive homozygous deletion variant that results in deletion of the HOIP catalytic structural domain. We demonstrate that this variant is a loss-of-function variant using a heterologous expression system. The variant has impaired E3 ligase function. It can still bind to other subunits of LUBAC, but it fails to generate linear ubiquitin chains. We also explored the underlying mechanisms by which this variant leads to immunodeficiency. The variant attenuates the canonical NF-κB and MAPK signalling cascades and increases the sensitivity of TNFα-induced diverse cell death and activation of mitochondrial apoptosis pathways. These findings provide support for the treatment and drug development of patients with inborn errors of immunity in HOIP and related signalling pathways. Implications of all the available evidence First, this study expands the HOIP pathogenic variant database and phenotypic spectrum. Furthermore, studies on the biological functions of pathogenic variants in relation to the NF-κB signalling pathway and cell death provided new understanding into the genetic basis and pathogenesis of HOIP-deficient immune disease, indicating the necessity of HOIP and related signalling pathway variants as diagnostic targets in patients with similar genetic deficiency phenotypes..

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To develop a prediction model based on spectral computed tomography (CT) to evaluate axillary lymph node (ALN) with macrometastases in clinical T1/2N0 invasive breast cancer. METHODS: A total of 217 clinical T1/2N0 invasive breast cancer patients who underwent spectral CT scans were retrospectively enrolled and categorized into a training cohort (n = 151) and validation cohort (n = 66). These patients were classified into ALN nonmacrometastases (stage pN0 or pN0 [i+] or pN1mi) and ALN macrometastases (stage pN1-3) subgroups. The morphologic criteria and quantitative spectral CT parameters of the most suspicious ALN were measured and compared. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) was used to screen predictive indicators to build a logistic model. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the models. RESULTS: The combined arterial-venous phase spectral CT model yielded the best diagnostic performance in discrimination of ALN nonmacrometastases and ALN macrometastases with the highest AUC (0.963 in the training cohort and 0.945 in validation cohorts). Among single phase spectral CT models, the venous phase spectral CT model showed the best performance (AUC = 0.960 in the training cohort and 0.940 in validation cohorts). There was no significant difference in AUCs among the 3 models (DeLong test, P > .05 for each comparison). CONCLUSION: A Lasso-logistic model that combined morphologic features and quantitative spectral CT parameters based on contrast-enhanced spectral imaging potentially be used as a noninvasive tool for individual preoperative prediction of ALN status in clinical T1/2N0 invasive breast cancers.

ABSTRACT

Cancer development and progression are generally associated with gene dysregulation, often resulting from changes in the transcription factor (TF) sequence or expression. Identifying key TFs involved in cancer gene regulation provides a framework for potential new therapeutics. This study presents a large-scale cancer gene TF-DNA interaction network, as well as an extensive promoter clone resource for future studies. Highly connected TFs bind to promoters of genes associated with either good or poor cancer prognosis, suggesting that strategies aimed at shifting gene expression balance between these two prognostic groups may be inherently complex. However, we identified potential for oncogene-targeted therapeutics, with half of the tested oncogenes being potentially repressed by influencing specific activators or bifunctional TFs. Finally, we investigate the role of intrinsically disordered regions within the key cancer-related TF ESR1 in DNA binding and transcriptional activity, and found that these regions can have complex trade-offs in TF function. Altogether, our study broadens our knowledge of the TFs involved in cancer gene regulation and provides a valuable resource for future studies and therapeutics.

ABSTRACT

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a persistent and progressive disorder characterized by airway or alveolar abnormalities, commonly leading to pulmonary hypertension (PH). This clinical observational study investigates the therapeutic mechanisms of Bufei Huoxue capsules (BHC) in treating PH in patients with COPD-linked PH (COPD-PH) using network pharmacology and molecular docking methods, and assesses the therapeutic efficacy and safety of BHCs. The active compounds and their target proteins in BHCs were sourced from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology database, with additional target proteins derived from the GeneCards and OMIM databases. An active network was constructed using Cytoscape 3.7.1, and interaction networks were established. Intersecting targets underwent Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis using the Metascape database. Network pharmacology and molecular docking studies demonstrated favorable binding affinities of BHC active ingredients, such as quercetin, bavachalcone, and isobavachin, for key targets including PTGS1, ESR1, and PTGS2. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis highlighted the involvement of these targets in processes such as the positive regulation of locomotion, the transmembrane receptor protein tyrosine kinase signaling pathway, and peptidyl-tyrosine phosphorylation. KEGG pathway analysis indicated their roles in pathways related to cancer, AGE-RAGE signaling in diabetic complications, and prostate cancer. BHCs exhibit therapeutic effects on COPD-PH through multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway interactions. This clinical observational study confirms the efficacy and safety of BHCs in improving cardiac and pulmonary functions, enhancing exercise tolerance, and elevating the quality of life in patients with COPD-PH.

ABSTRACT

The development of broad-spectrum coronavirus vaccines is essential to prepare for future respiratory virus pandemics. We demonstrated broad neutralization by a trivalent subunit vaccine, formulating the receptor-binding domains of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2 XBB.1.5 with Alum and CpG55.2. Vaccinated mice produced cross-neutralizing antibodies against all three human Betacoronaviruses and others currently exclusive to bats, indicating the epitope preservation of the individual antigens during co-formulation and the potential for epitope broadening.

ABSTRACT

The genetic contribution of protein-coding variants to immune-mediated diseases (IMDs) remains underexplored. Through whole exome sequencing of 40 IMDs in 350,770 UK Biobank participants, we identified 162 unique genes in 35 IMDs, among which 124 were novel genes. Several genes, including FLG which is associated with atopic dermatitis and asthma, showed converging evidence from both rare and common variants. 91 genes exerted significant effects on longitudinal outcomes (interquartile range of Hazard Ratio: 1.12-5.89). Mendelian randomization identified five causal genes, of which four were approved drug targets (CDSN, DDR1, LTA, and IL18BP). Proteomic analysis indicated that mutations associated with specific IMDs might also affect protein expression in other IMDs. For example, DXO (celiac disease-related gene) and PSMB9 (alopecia areata-related gene) could modulate CDSN (autoimmune hypothyroidism-, psoriasis-, asthma-, and Graves' disease-related gene) expression. Identified genes predominantly impact immune and biochemical processes, and can be clustered into pathways of immune-related, urate metabolism, and antigen processing. Our findings identified protein-coding variants which are the key to IMDs pathogenesis and provided new insights into tailored innovative therapies.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a devastating neurological disease with complex genetic etiology. Yet most known loci have only identified from the late-onset type AD in populations of European ancestry. METHODS: We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) of AD totaling 6878 Chinese and 63,926 European individuals. RESULTS: In addition to the apolipoprotein E (APOE) locus, our GWAS of two independent Chinese samples uncovered three novel AD susceptibility loci (KIAA2013, SLC52A3, and TCN2) and a novel ancestry-specific variant within EGFR (rs1815157). More replicated variants were observed in the Chinese (31%) than in the European samples (15%). In combining genome-wide associations and functional annotations, EGFR and TCN2 were prioritized as two of the most biologically significant genes. Phenome-wide Mendelian randomization suggests that high mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration might protect against AD. DISCUSSION: The current study reveals novel AD susceptibility loci, emphasizes the importance of diverse populations in AD genetic research, and advances our understanding of disease etiology. HIGHLIGHTS: Loci KIAA2013, SLC52A3, and TCN2 were associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Chinese populations. rs1815157 within the EGFR locus was associated with AD in Chinese populations. The genetic architecture of AD varied between Chinese and European populations. EGFR and TCN2 were prioritized as two of the most biologically significant genes. High mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentrations might have protective effects against AD.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the long-term trends in unhealthy lifestyle factors and the risk sociodemographic subgroups among people with dyslipidemia. METHODS: Data extracted from the 1999 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Lifestyle factors were smoking status, alcohol drinking, obesity, dietary quality, depression, physical activity, and sedentary behavior. A Joinpoint regression model was used to estimate trends in the log-transformed age-standardized prevalence. Multinomial logistic regression models adjusted for age, sex, and race/ethnicity were used to analyze subgroups by sociodemographic factors. RESULTS: Data for 33,680 respondents were extracted between 1999 and 2018. The prevalence of smoking and poor-quality diet decreased from 1999 to 2018 (P<0.001), while obesity significantly increased (P<0.001). The prevalence of depression marginally increased from 2005 to 2018 (P=0.074). We observed that non-Hispanic Black individuals, Hispanics, males, as well as those with lower family income-to-poverty ratios and education levels, unemployed individuals, or those lacking a spouse/live-in partner, were at elevated risk of unhealthy lifestyle factors when compared to the reference groups. CONCLUSIONS: Among NHANES respondents from 1999 to 2018 with dyslipidemia, significant reductions in the prevalence of current smoking and poor diet were observed, while the prevalence of obesity was markedly increased. There were sociodemographic differences in the management of lifestyle factors. Further initiatives to encourage people with dyslipidemia are required to reduce potential adverse outcomes.

ABSTRACT

China's strategy to concurrently address climate change and air pollution mitigation is hindered by a lack of comprehensive information on source contributions to health damage and carbon emissions. Here we show notable discrepancies between source contributions to CO2 emissions and fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-related mortality by using adjoint emission sensitivity modeling to attribute premature mortality in 2017 to 53 sector and fuel/process combinations with high spatial resolution. Our findings reveal that monetized PM2.5 health damage exceeds climate impacts in over half of the analyzed subsectors. In addition to coal-fired energy generators and industrial boilers, the combined health and climate costs from energy-intensive processes, diesel-powered vehicles, domestic coal combustion, and agricultural activities exceed 100 billion US dollars, with health-related costs predominating. This research highlights the critical need to integrate the social costs of health damage with climate impacts to develop more balanced mitigation strategies toward these dual goals, particularly during fuel transition and industrial structure upgrading.

Recent expansion of proteomic coverage opens unparalleled avenues to unveil new biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Among 6,361 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins analysed from the ADNI database, YWHAG performed best in diagnosing both biologically (AUC = 0.969) and clinically (AUC = 0.857) defined AD. Four- (YWHAG, SMOC1, PIGR and TMOD2) and five- (ACHE, YWHAG, PCSK1, MMP10 and IRF1) protein panels greatly improved the accuracy to 0.987 and 0.975, respectively. Their superior performance was validated in an independent external cohort and in discriminating autopsy-confirmed AD versus non-AD, rivalling even canonical CSF ATN biomarkers. Moreover, they effectively predicted the clinical progression to AD dementia and were strongly associated with AD core biomarkers and cognitive decline. Synaptic, neurogenic and infectious pathways were enriched in distinct AD stages. Mendelian randomization did not support the significant genetic link between CSF proteins and AD. Our findings revealed promising high-performance biomarkers for AD diagnosis and prediction, with implications for clinical trials targeting different pathomechanisms.

ABSTRACT

RNF214 is an understudied ubiquitin ligase with little knowledge of its biological functions or protein substrates. Here we show that the TEAD transcription factors in the Hippo pathway are substrates of RNF214. RNF214 induces non-proteolytic ubiquitylation at a conserved lysine residue of TEADs, enhances interactions between TEADs and YAP, and promotes transactivation of the downstream genes of the Hippo signaling. Moreover, YAP and TAZ could bind polyubiquitin chains, implying the underlying mechanisms by which RNF214 regulates the Hippo pathway. Furthermore, RNF214 is overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and inversely correlates with differentiation status and patient survival. Consistently, RNF214 promotes tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, and HCC tumorigenesis in mice. Collectively, our data reveal RNF214 as a critical component in the Hippo pathway by forming a signaling axis of RNF214-TEAD-YAP and suggest that RNF214 is an oncogene of HCC and could be a potential drug target of HCC therapy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To explore ocular characteristics of patients with cataracts after renal transplantation and analyze the results of phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. METHODS: Patients with cataracts after renal transplantation and control patients who underwent phacoemulsification combined with IOL implantation were enrolled. All patients underwent phacoemulsification combined with IOL implantation. Visual acuity, intraocular pressure, type of lens opacity, corneal endothelial cell density, and ocular biological parameters were evaluated before surgery. Visual prognosis, dry eye, and postoperative complications were monitored for 6 months after phacoemulsification. RESULTS: We analyzed 25 eyes of 16 patients after renal transplantation and 30 eyes of 21 control patients. The most common type of cataract of renal transplantation group was posterior subcapsular, while the most common type of cataract of control group was cortical. Significant differences in corneal astigmatism, white-to-white ratio, and keratometry values were observed between the groups. The postoperative visual acuity of both groups significantly improved following surgery. Postoperative complications, such as the degree of anterior and posterior capsule opacification and the incidence of a requirement of neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser capsulotomy, were significantly lower in the renal transplantation group. Moreover, secondary glaucoma occurred in two eyes in the renal transplantation group. CONCLUSION: This study showed that cataracts after renal transplantation were mostly posterior subcapsular. Postoperative visual acuity recovered well in most patients, with reduced incidence of postoperative complications. This study suggested that phacoemulsification combined with IOL implantation was safe and effective, providing a reference for multi-focal IOL implantation in kidney transplant recipients.

Renowned for their nutritional benefits, citrus fruits are harvested at various stages in China for functional food production. This study introduces an innovative analytical method, DART-MS, enabling direct qualitative analysis of citrus samples without the need for preprocessing. Simultaneously, the combination of chemometrics can be applied to distinguish between three different citrus samples: Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, and Citri Reticulatae "Chachi". Notably, given the international regulatory concerns surrounding synephrine, a precise quantitative analysis method for synephrine was developed. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) were 39 ng mL-1 and 156 ng mL-1, respectively. The recovery rates obtained varied from 98.46% to 100.71%. Furthermore, the intra-day and inter-day precision demonstrated robust consistency, with values spanning 5.0-6.1% and 5.03-6.08%, respectively, offering quicker results compared to those from HPLC-MS, promising a safer assessment of herbal and food products.

ABSTRACT

The sustained circulation of H9N2 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) poses a significant threat for contributing to a new pandemic. Given the temporal and spatial uncertainty in the antigenicity of H9N2 AIVs, the immune protection efficiency of vaccines remains challenging. By developing an antigenicity prediction method for H9N2 AIVs, named PREDAC-H9, the global antigenic landscape of H9N2 AIVs was mapped. PREDAC-H9 utilizes the XGBoost model with 14 well-designed features. The XGBoost model was built and evaluated to predict the antigenic relationship between any two viruses with high values of 81.1 %, 81.4 %, 81.3 %, 81.1 %, and 89.4 % in accuracy, precision, recall, F1 value, and area under curve (AUC), respectively. Then the antigenic correlation network (ACnet) was constructed based on the predicted antigenic relationship for H9N2 AIVs from 1966 to 2022, and ten major antigenic clusters were identified. Of these, four novel clusters were generated in China in the past decade, demonstrating the unique complex situation there. To help tackle this situation, we applied PREDAC-H9 to calculate the cluster-transition determining sites and screen out virus strains with the high cross-protective spectrum, thus providing an in silico reference for vaccine recommendation. The proposed model will reduce the clinical monitoring workload and provide a useful tool for surveillance and control of H9N2 AIVs.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: There are few reports on compliance with oral nutritional supplements (ONS) after surgery in hospitalized patients. This study aimed to investigate the compliance with ONS and its influencing factors after surgery in colorectal cancer patients. METHODS: STROBE checklist was used during the preparation of this paper. A total of 103 postoperative colorectal cancer patients were selected from November 2020 to April 2021 from the Department of Anorectal Surgery in our institution, which is a tertiary hospital in Hangzhou, China. The compliance with ONS was recorded by a self-record sheet, and sociodemographic and disease-related information of these patients was gathered through a self-designed questionnaire. RESULTS: The overall ONS compliance rate of patients with colorectal cancer was 57.6%. Results of univariate analysis revealed that ONS compliance rate was related to sex, admission body mass index, abdominal distension, attitude towards ONS, and satisfaction with ONS. Multi-factor analysis showed that age, sex, and perceived benefits of nutrition therapy independently influenced the ONS compliance rate. CONCLUSIONS: The postoperative ONS compliance rate of colorectal cancer patients needs to be further improved. Healthcare professionals should pay more attention to the postoperative ONS compliance and acknowledging the influence of age, gender, and attitudes towards ONS on ONS compliance. Notably, patients' perspectives towards ONS play a crucial and modifiable role in determining ONS compliance. Nurses ought to assist patients in cultivating a positive attitude towards ONS. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Dosage form and delivery method are also influence factors that deserves further exploration in the future. Future research endeavours should endeavour to craft tailored, meticulous nutritional intervention strategies tailored to the diverse factors that influence ONS compliance, ultimately leading to enhanced ONS adherence. Our findings could serve as valuable evidence for the development of strategies aimed at enhancing ONS usage practices.
