ABSTRACT

Background: This prospective study aimed to investigate the influence of weight difference between implanted prosthesis and removed bone in cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) on hip awareness and patient-reported outcomes. Methods: A total of 48 patients (56 hips) who underwent primary THA were prospectively enrolled. Implanted prosthesis and removed bone were weighed intraoperatively. Forgotten Joint Score (FJS) and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) scores were obtained before and at 1 and 3 months after surgery. Patients were divided into groups A, B, and C according to the percentile of the weight difference. Results: The mean weight difference of the implanted prosthesis and removed bone was 117.97 ± 47.35 g. A negative correlation was found among the weight differences of the three groups and 1- and 3-month postoperative FJS (correlation coefficients, -0.331 and -0.734, respectively). A positive correlation was found among the weight difference of the three groups and 3-month postoperative WOMAC (correlation coefficient, 0.403). A significant difference in 3-month postoperative FJS and WOMAC scores was found among the three groups. The mean 3-month postoperative FJS (79.00) of group C was significantly lower than that of group A (93.32) (P < 0.05). The mean WOMAC score (15.83) of group A was significantly lower than that of group C (23.67) (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The implanted prosthesis is larger than the removed bone in cementless THA. The weight difference is negatively correlated with hip function. The weight difference should be minimized to achieve optimal hip joint awareness.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) is considered to be an effective treatment for symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (KOA) of isolated the medial compartment with varus alignment of the lower extremity. However, the choice of material to fill the void remains controversial. This study aims to evaluate the bone union of the osteotomy gap using a novel wedge-shaped cancellous allograft after MOWHTO and its effect on clinical outcomes. METHODS: All patients who underwent MOWHTO using a novel wedge-shaped cancellous allograft combined with TomoFix locking compression plate (LCP) fixation between January 2016 and July 2020 were enrolled. The radiographic parameters including hip-knee-ankle angle (HKAA), medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), femorotibial angle (FTA) and posterior tibial slope angle (PTSA) were measured between pre-operative and post-operative radiographs. Knee Society score (KSS) and range of motion (ROM) were assessed preoperatively and at last follow-up. Patients included in this study were divided into two groups according to the correction angle: small correction group (< 10°; SC group) and large correction group (≥ 10°; LC group). The modified Radiographic Union score for tibial fractures (mRUST) was used to assess the difference in bone healing between the two groups at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively and at the final follow-up. A paired student's t test was conducted for comparison of differences of the relevant data pre-operatively and post-operatively. RESULTS: A total of 82 patients (88 knees) were included in this study. The HKAA, MPTA, FTA and PTSA increased from -6.4° ± 3.0°, 85.1° ± 2.6°, 180.1° ± 3.2° and 7.7° ± 4.4° preoperatively to 1.2° ± 4.3° (p < 0.001), 94.4° ± 3.3° (p < 0.001), 171.0° ± 2.8° and 11.8° ± 5.8° (p < 0.001) immediately postoperatively, respectively. However, no significant statistic difference was found in above-mentioned parameters at last follow-up compared to immediate postoperative data (p > 0.05). All patients in this study achieved good bone healing at the final follow-up and no significant differences in mRUST scores were seen between the SC group and LC group. The KSS-Knee score and KSS-Function score improved significantly from 55.4 ± 3.7 and 63.3 ± 4.6 preoperatively to 86.4 ± 2.8 (p < 0.001) and 89.6 ± 2.9 (p < 0.001) at last follow-up, respectively. Nevertheless, there was no significant difference in ROM between pre-operation and last follow-up (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: For MOWHTO, the wedge-shaped cancellous allograft was a reliable choice for providing good bone healing and clinical outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Hydrogels with tailor-made swelling-shrinkable properties have aroused considerable interest in numerous biomedical domains. For example, as swelling is a key issue for blood and wound extrudates absorption, the transference of nutrients and metabolites, as well as drug diffusion and release, hydrogels with high swelling capacity have been widely applicated in full-thickness skin wound healing and tissue regeneration, and drug delivery. Nevertheless, in the fields of tissue adhesives and internal soft-tissue wound healing, and bioelectronics, non-swelling hydrogels play very important functions owing to their stable macroscopic dimension and physical performance in physiological environment. Moreover, the negative swelling behavior (i.e., shrinkage) of hydrogels can be exploited to drive noninvasive wound closure, and achieve resolution enhancement of hydrogel scaffolds. In addition, it can help push out the entrapped drugs, thus promote drug release. However, there still has not been a general review of the constructions and biomedical applications of hydrogels from the viewpoint of swelling-shrinkable properties. Therefore, this review summarizes the tactics employed so far in tailoring the swelling-shrinkable properties of hydrogels and their biomedical applications. And a relatively comprehensive understanding of the current progress and future challenge of the hydrogels with different swelling-shrinkable features is provided for potential clinical translations.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to compare the Forgotten Joint Score-12(FJS) outcomes and the minimum clinically important difference (MCID) of the FJS after high tibial osteotomy (HTO), unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA), and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with short-term follow-up (at least 2 years). Another objective of the study is to investigate the factors influencing FJS. It is hypothesized that there are differences in FJS outcomes among the three procedures. METHODS: Patients who underwent HTO, UKA, and TKA from January 2016 to December 2020 and were followed up for a minimum of 2 years were included in the study. The FJS were analyses from a cohort of people who submitted data to two years. The preoperative and postoperative clinical outcomes were compared and evaluated the patient-related factor. The FJS scores were predicted using multiple linear regression analysis. Additionally, Patient's Joint Perception (PJP) questions were used as anchors to determine the achievement of the forgotten joint, and FJS MCID were calculated using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). RESULTS: Three hundred eighty-nine patients were included in the final study, and there were 111 patients in HTO groups,128patients in UKA groups, and 150 patients in TKA groups. The mean follow-up was 47.0 months. There was a significant difference in the total FJS, between the HTO, UKA, and TKA groups (FJS:59.38 ± 7.25, 66.69 ± 7.44 and 56.90 ± 6.85, p < 0.001. We found the MCID of the FJS of HTO, UKA, and TKA were 63.54, 69.79, and 61.45, respectively. In multiple linear regression, younger age, and higher FS were significant predictors of better FJS. CONCLUSION: Medial UKA demonstrated lower patient awareness in comparison to HTO and TKA, as assessed by the FJS. Younger age and higher FS were identified as significant predictors of improved FJS, providing valuable guidance for surgical decision-making.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is the most serious complication following total joint arthroplasty (TJA) and has a significant impact on patients and the national healthcare system. To date, the diagnosis of PJI is still confronted with dilemmas. The present study investigated the validity of sonication fluid culture (SFC) for removing implants in the diagnosis of PJI after joint replacement. METHODS: From database establishment to December 2020, relevant literature was retrieved from the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane Library databases. Two reviewers independently performed quality assessment and data extraction to calculate the pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), area under the curve (AUC) and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) to evaluate the diagnostic value of overall SFC for PJI. RESULTS: A total of 38 eligible studies including 6302 patients were selected in this study. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, PLR, NLR, and DOR of SFC for PJI diagnosis were 0.77 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.76-0.79), 0.96 (95% CI, 0.95-0.96), 18.68 (95% CI, 11.92-29.28), 0.24 (95% CI, 0.21-0.29), and 85.65 (95% CI, 56.46-129.94), respectively, while the AUC was 0.92. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis showed that SFC was of great value in PJI diagnosis, and the evidence of SFC on PJI was more favorable but not yet strong. Therefore, improvement of the diagnostic accuracy of SFC is still necessary, and the diagnosis of PJI continues to warrant a multiplex approach before and during a revision procedure.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Our research investigated predictors of postoperative blood transfusion rate following total joint arthroplasty (TJA) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and evaluated the incidence of complications in the transfusion group and non-transfusion group. METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed risk factors among 320 RA patients who underwent elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) from January 2010 to December 2018. Demographic characteristics, laboratory results, medication history, and surgical protocol were gathered from electronic medical records. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to measure the impact of relevant variables on the need for transfusions. In addition, we compared the incidence of complications associated with transfusion. RESULTS: The cohort comprised 320 RA patients, aged 57.4 ± 12.0 years, of whom 137 required postoperative blood transfusions and 183 did not. BMI, type of surgery, duration of surgery, disease activity score 28 (DAS28-CRP), tranexamic acid (TXA) administration, and preoperative hemoglobin (Hb) were all risk factors for transfusion after adjusting for the planned procedure. CONCLUSION: Previously published predictors, such as BMI, low preoperative hemoglobin, duration of surgery, procedure type (THA), were also identified in our analysis. Moreover, TXA administration and the DAS28-CRP showed the potential to influence risk. The incidence of postoperative complications was increased in patients who received blood transfusions compared to non-transfusion group. Our findings could help to identify RA patient population requiring blood transfusions, to ensure the necessary steps are adopted to limit blood loss and improve blood management strategies. Key Points • The risk factors for blood transfusion in rheumatoid arthritis patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty were BMI, the type of surgery, duration of surgery, TXA administration, DAS28-CRP, and preoperative hemoglobin. • The incidence of postoperative complications was increased in patients who received blood transfusions compared to non-transfusion group.

ABSTRACT

By screening the strains and testing different combinations of diverse bacteria, we developed a compound bacterial agent composed of 5 g Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (B2), 10 g Pseudomonas aeruginosa (F4), 5 g Paenibacillus lautus (303), and 10 ml composite strains (DOD) for the degradation of household food waste (HFW). The final mass loss of HFW in aerobic composting with the compound bacteria agent B2+F4+303+DOD (group C) was 84.52%, increased by 20.83% over that loss in natural composting (group A). Analysis of 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing showed that the phyla in group A and group C mainly included Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Cyanobacteria. At the genus level, Pediococcus was the dominant genus in group A, of which the microbial community performed better in maintaining a stable microbial system in the later stage of composting, while Weissella accounted for a larger proportion of group C, which acted well in reducing the final mass of composting. Ochrobactrum was closely related to the removal of odors in the early stage of group C. The relative abundance of compound bacterial agents was always at a rather low level, suggesting that it affected the composting process by changing the proportion of dominant bacteria in the compost.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The treatment of chronic osteomyelitis (COM) is extremely challenging for physicians and patients. It is of great significance to explore the research status, development trend and future research hotspots in the field of COM to promote the development of this field. This study is aimed to explore the global research status of COM and predict its future research hotspots based on bibliometric and visualized analysis. METHODS: Web of Science core collection database was used to search the related literature of COM from 1994 to 2020. All data were imported into Microsoft Excel 2019 for collation. Additionally, the literature quality of countries, authors, journals, and institutions is evaluated. The VOS viewer software was used for conducting co-analysis, co-citation analysis, and keyword co-occurrence analysis of literature to analyze the global status and predict the future hotspots of the COM field. RESULTS: A total of 726 articles were retrieved in this study. The number of global publications shows a trend of wave growth, but the increase is not significant. It is expected that the number of COM articles will remain at more than 50 per year in the next decade. The COM literature published in the United States (Publications = 160, H index = 37, average citations per item = 28.63) is of the highest quality. Girschick HJ (Publications = 16, H index = 14, average citations per item = 52.25) is the most contributed scholar in the field of COM. UNIV IOWA (Publications = 15, H index = 11, average citations per item = 57.27) and UNIV WURZBURG (Publications = 18, H index = 15, average citations per item = 47.5) are influential institutions in the field of COM. The results of co-occurrence analysis show that the field of COM can be roughly divided into the following five modules: COM surgical research, COM basic research, COM diagnosis-related research, chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO)-related research, risk factors of COM. Risk factors of COM are the module with the highest concentration of hot words. CONCLUSION: COM-related research will continue to develop further in the next decade. The diagnosis research and risk factors of COM are the most popular research modules in recent years. Some controversial or troubled issues including the efficacy of perforator flap and fascia flap covering soft tissue, searching exclusive detection methods for the diagnosis of COM and bisphosphonates and biological agents in the treatment of CRMO may lead to the development of the COM field.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore the features of gait disorders with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), and results from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were analyzed. METHODS: The 139 patients with CSVD were divided into two groups by the Tinetti scale scores: the gait disorder (GD) group with a score <24 (63 patients) and the normal gait (GN) group with a score ≥24 (76 patients). A series of scales and 3.0T MRI with DTI were used to analyze the correlation between the abnormal gaits and imaging findings. RESULTS: The differences in the Barthel Index, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part III, and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores between the two groups were significant (p < 0.05), and there were significant correlations between MoCA and total gait scores (r = 0.201, p = 0.002). The GD group had a more degraded gait score, widened gait base, and degraded gait length than the GN group (p < 0.05). There were significant differences between the two groups (p < 0.05) in white matter (WM) hyperintensities (WMH) of the Fazekas scale grade 2-3 and lacunes. The GD group had a greater total MRI burden than the GN group (p < 0.05). In DTI parameters, the GD group had lower fractional anisotropy (FA) and higher mean diffusion (MD) values in WM tracts in many areas around the ventricles (family-wise error corrected, p < 0.05). Significant correlations were observed between FA and the total gait score (r = 0.467, p < 0.01), and also between MD and total gait score (r  = -0.422, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with CSVD with gait disorders had more WMH of Fazekas scale grade 2-3, lacunes, and total MRI burden than the GN patients, and those with gait disorders may suffer from demyelination of nerve fibers and damage to the fibers' microstructures.

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cardiorenal syndrome type 4 (CRS type 4), with high rates of morbidity and mortality, has become a social and economic problem worldwide over the last few decades. Zhen-Wu decoction, a traditional medicine used in East Asia, has been widely used in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and kidney disease, and has shown potential therapeutic effects for the clinical treatment of CRS type 4. However, the underlying mechanism has not been extensively explored. AIM OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect and underlying mechanism of Zhen-Wu decoction on uremic cardiomyopathy, offering a potential target for clinical treatment of CRS type 4. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five/six nephrectomized mice were utilized for experiments in vivo. The cardioprotective effects of Zhen-Wu decoction were evaluated by echocardiography and tissue staining. RNA-Seq data were used to investigate the potential pharmacological mechanism. The prediction of targets and active components was based on our previous strategy. Subsequently, the protective effect of the selected compound was verified in experiments in vitro. RESULTS: Zhen-Wu decoction alleviated cardiac dysfunction and endothelial injury in 5/6 nephrectomized mice, and the mechanism may involve the inflammatory process and oxidative stress. The activation of the Nrf2 signaling pathway was predicted to be a potential target of Zhen-Wu decoction in protecting endothelial cells. Through our machine learning strategy, we found that lactiflorin as an ingredient in Zhen-Wu decoction, alleviates IS-induced endothelial cell injury by blocking Keap1 and activating Nrf2. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated that Zhen-Wu decoction and lactiflorin could protect endothelial cells against oxidative stress in mice after nephrectomy by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

Hydrogels with injectability, self-healing ability and adhesiveness have great potential for hemostasis and full-thickness skin wound repair, which are usually fabricated by multistep chemical synthesis and the use of organic solvents and catalyst. Herein, we report an injectable and self-healing hydrogel facilely prepared through one-pot heating of chitosan and graphene oxide mixture solution, without any pollutant and waste generated. The dynamic reversible breakage and recombination of noncovalent bonds between chitosan and graphene oxide endows the hydrogel injectability and self-healing ability. In addition, the mechanical and rheological properties of the hydrogels can be controlled by varying the dosage of graphene oxide. Meanwhile, hydrogels exhibited good adhesiveness and hemocompatibility. Finally, in vivo experiments in a rat liver bleeding model and full-thickness skin defect model verified the outstanding hemostatic and wound healing capability of the hydrogels, indicating the promising future for use as wound dressing.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) indicators and cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) with depressive states, and to explore the underlying mechanisms of white matter damage in CSVD with depression. METHOD: A total of 115 elderly subjects were consecutively recruited from the neurology clinic, including 36 CSVD patients with depressive state (CSVD+D), 34 CSVD patients without depressive state (CSVD-D), and 45 controls. A detailed neuropsychological assessment and multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed. Based on tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) analysis and structural network analysis, differences between groups were compared, including white matter fiber indicators (fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity) and structural brain network indicators (global efficiency, local efficiency and network strength), in order to explore the differences and correlations of DTI parameters among the three groups. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in terms of CSVD burden scores and conventional imaging findings between the CSVD-D and CSVD+D groups. Group differences were found in DTI indicators (p <  0.05), after adjusting for age, gender, education level, and vascular risk factors (VRF), there were significant correlations between TBSS analysis indicators and depression, including: fractional anisotropy (FA) (r = - 0.291, p <  0.05), mean diffusivity (MD) (r = 0.297, p < 0.05), at the same time, between structural network indicators and depression also show significant correlations, including: local efficiency (ELocal) (r = - 0.278, p < 0.01) and network strength (r = - 0.403, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Changes in FA, MD values and structural network indicators in DTI parameters can predict the depressive state of CSVD to a certain extent, providing a more direct structural basis for the hypothesis of abnormal neural circuits in the pathogenesis of vascular-related depression. In addition, abnormal white matter alterations in subcortical neural circuits probably affect the microstructural function of brain connections, which may be a mechanism for the concomitant depressive symptoms in CSVD patients.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of serum albumin (ALB), globulin (GLO), and albumin to globulin ratio (AGR) in the diagnosis of PJI and prediction of reinfection following reimplantation in PJI patients who underwent two-stage revision. METHODS: We perform a retrospective data collection on identified patients who underwent revision arthroplasties in our institution from January 2010 to January 2020. A total of 241 patients were stratified into: group A (PJI), group B (aseptic loosening). Fifty-five patients who underwent two-stage revision in group A were assigned to group C. Group C was stratified into subgroup 1 (reinfection) and subgroup 2 (non-reinfection). Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the utility of serum markers for diagnosing PJI and predicting reinfection following reimplantation. RESULTS: In the diagnosis of PJI, there were significant differences in the levels of ALB, GLO, and AGR between groups A and group B (P < 0.05). The AUC value of serum AGR (0.851) was similar to ESR (0.841) and CRP (0.866) (all p > 0.05). The AUC values of serum ALB and GLO were 0.757 and 0.753, respectively. As for predicting reinfection following reimplantation, the serum ALB in the non-reinfection group was higher than that in the reinfection group (p = 0.041). The AUC value of serum ALB was 0.7. CONCLUSION: AGR was promising adjunct marker for the diagnosis of PJI, similar to CRP and ESR. ALB and GLO have an acceptable value for the diagnosis of PJI. ALB may be expected to be a kind of effective marker for predicting reinfection following reimplantation.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Ischemic stroke (IS) is a serious public health problem worldwide, threatening human life and health. Atherosclerosis is the cause of stroke. At present, there are few selective indexes that can be used to evaluate atherosclerosis in the clinic; providers rely mainly on the atherosclerotic index (AI). Disturbance of lipid metabolism is considered to be a key event leading to IS. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to discover potential biomarkers in the serum of atherosclerosis-induced IS, combined with the AI to provide early warning for the diagnosis of IS. METHODS: In this study, we used nontargeted metabolomics based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q/TOF-MS) to measure the changes in serum metabolites in a group of patients with IS. To verify the reproducibility of candidate biomarkers in the population, we expanded the sample size. RESULTS: Five metabolites were identified, including sphingomyelin (18:0/14:0), 1-Methylpyrrolinium, PC (18:0/18:0), LysoPC (18:0/0:0), and PC (18: 2/18:2). The combination of these 5 metabolic markers has good diagnostic and predictive ability, and the change level of these metabolites is significantly related to IS. Our results also indicate that changes in glycerophospholipid metabolism may indicate an early risk of IS development. CONCLUSION: These findings may contribute to the development of new diagnostic methods of potential biomarkers in serum combined with the AI, thereby providing early warning for the diagnosis of atherosclerosis-induced IS, and may provide a new insights for pathogenesis in IS.

ABSTRACT

Chitosan (CS) and graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites have received wide attention in biomedical fields due to the synergistic effect between CS which has excellent biological characteristics and GO which owns great physicochemical, mechanical, and optical properties. Nanocomposites based on CS and GO can be fabricated into a variety of forms, such as nanoparticles, hydrogels, scaffolds, films, and nanofibers. Thanks to the ease of functionalization, the performance of these nanocomposites in different forms can be further improved by introducing other functional polymers, nanoparticles, or growth factors. With this background, the current review summarizes the latest developments of CS-GO nanocomposites in different forms and compositions in biomedical applications including drug and biomacromolecules delivery, wound healing, bone tissue engineering, and biosensors. Future improving directions and challenges for clinical practice are proposed as well.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The goal of our study was to investigate the heterogeneity of cardiac macrophages (CMφs) in mice with transverse aortic constriction (TAC) via single-cell sequencing and identify a subset of macrophages associated with heart injury. METHODS AND RESULTS: We selected all CMφs from CD45+ cells using single-cell mRNA sequencing data. Through dimension reduction, clustering, and enrichment analyses, CD72hi CMφs were identified as a subset of pro-inflammatory macrophages. The pseudo-time trajectory and ChIP-Seq analyses identified Rel as the key transcription factor that induces CD72hi CMφ differentiation. Rel KD and Rel-/- bone marrow chimaera mice subjected to TAC showed features of mitigated cardiac injury, including decreased levels of cytokines and ROS, which prohibited cardiomyocyte death. The transfer of adoptive Rel-overexpressing monocytes and CD72hi CMφ injection directly aggravated heart injury in the TAC model. The CD72hi macrophages also exerted pro-inflammatory and cardiac injury effects associated with myocardial infarction. In humans, patients with heart failure exhibit increased CD72hi CMφ levels following dilated cardiomyopathy and ischaemic cardiomyopathy. CONCLUSION: Bone marrow-derived, Rel-mediated CD72hi macrophages play a pro-inflammatory role, induce cardiac injury and, thus, may serve as a therapeutic target for multiple cardiovascular diseases.

ABSTRACT

Stormwater harvesting is an effective measure to mitigate flooding risk and pollutant migration in our urban environment with the continuously increasing impermeable faction. Treatment of harvested stormwater also provides the fit-for-purpose water sources as an alternative to potable water supply ensuring the reliability and sustainability of the water management in the living complex. In order to provide the water management decision-maker with a broad range of related technology database and to facilitate the implementation of stormwater harvesting in the future, a comprehensive review was undertaken to understand the corresponding treatment performance, the applicable circumstances of current stormwater treatment and harvesting technologies. Technologies with promising potential for stormwater treatment were also reviewed to investigate the feasibility of being used in an integrated process. The raw stormwater quality and the required quality for different levels of stormwater reuses (irrigation, recreational, and potable) were reviewed and compared. The required level of treatment is defined for different 'fit-for-purpose' uses of harvested stormwater. Stormwater biofilter and constructed wetland as the two most advanced and widely used stormwater harvesting and treatment technologies, their main functionality, treatment performance and adequate scale of the application were reviewed based on published peer-reviewed articles and case studies. Excessive microbial effluent that exists in stormwater treated using these two technologies has restricted the stormwater reuse in most cases. Water disinfection technologies developed for wastewater and surface water treatment but with high potential to be used for stormwater treatment have been reviewed. Their feasibility and limitation for stormwater treatment are presented with respect to different levels of fit-for-purpose reuses. Implications for future implementation of stormwater treatment are made on proposing treatment trains that are suitable for different fit-for-purpose stormwater reuses.
