ABSTRACT

A case of rheumatic fever with severe heart involvement, in which articular rheumatoid-like features involving both hands appeared many years after clinical onset, is described. After reviewing the articular sequelae of rheumatic fever and describing the clinical features of each form, the authors point out the main differences between rheumatic fever and rheumatoid arthritis, and diagnose Jaccoud's arthritis.

ABSTRACT

The treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis has been thoroughly studied in recent years, because of the large diffusion of this condition. The therapeutic use of synthetic calcitonin from salmon, associated with oral calcium, has been successfully performed in 18 women out of 20, aged 55-65 years old, all suffering from postmenopausal osteoporosis without bone fractures. The dose used (100 MRC), the type of administration, and the duration of treatment (1 injection i.m. daily, for 30 days, and 1 every other day, for the next 60 days), can be taken as a useful therapeutical scheme, also by the general practitioner.

ABSTRACT

After describing peripheral rheumatoid neuropathy and pointing out its increased frequency after the advent of steroid therapy, the Authors describe a case brought to their attention at the Rheumatology Division of the Ospedale San Camillo De Lellis.

ABSTRACT

The first part of the report confirms the nosographic autonomy of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) in the light of recent international discoveries. The second part identifies the particular clinical and evolutive aspects of the disease that are now universally accepted but still the subject of further research.

ABSTRACT

The first part of the paper describes the major clinical aspects of psoriatic arthritis. The second part examines the complex problem of therapy on the basis of personal experience in order to give the practical clinician guidance in the treatment and control of the condition.

ABSTRACT

The drugs used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis are divided into two classes: a "first aid" and a "back up" group. The synthetic antimalarial drugs examined belong to the second group. Table 1 assesses the pros and cons of such treatment and clearly indicates the prevalence of its advantages.

ABSTRACT

After an examination of the three operational stages in the modern concept of preventive medicine, the main pathogenetic cofactors in secondary arthrosis following chronic microtraumatisation are identified, described and evaluated in order to establish the correct preventive approach to the condition in helicopter pilots.

ABSTRACT

Helicopter pilots subjected to "chronic microtraumatism" related to the constant vibration present in this type of aircraft are considered. The most suitable physiokinetic treatment in the prevention of cervical spondylodiscarthrosis is discussed. Spondylodiscarthrosis is the most common and debilitating problem affecting helicopter personnel.

ABSTRACT

The various stages in the diagnostic process are discussed with particular reference to rheumatology. Consideration is given to recent "early" and "preclinical" diagnosis concepts, and these are applied to the aircrew category. The main "rheumatological emergencies" are listed and described for the purposes of that "specialised" prevention constantly needed to a greater extent, not only in the complex, demanding activity of aircrew, but also in the wider "world of labour", as currently conceived.

ABSTRACT

Following a brief description of the "mechanical factor" and chronic "microtraumatism" in the pathogenesis of arthrosis, the clinical case of a helicopter pilot with almost 15 years service is reported. Unlike frequently observed cases, the present case presented "total" involvement of the rachis, thus posing a number of problems of differential diagnosis with ankylosing spondylitis. Clinico-laboratory and X-ray data permitted precise diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Following aetiopathogenetic and anatomopathological examination of arthrosis, chronic microtraumatism, often below the threshold of subjective perception, is indicated as a component, aggravating factor in the disease. During flight, especially if the aircraft is a helicopter, these microtraumas (triggered by the varied motions of the craft and its vibrations) operate continually on joints and muscles and so, along with other factors of anatomical and biochemical nature, cause an aggravation to arthrosis in flying personnel, particularly in the vertebral tract.
