ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate associations between mental distress and COVID-19-related changes in behavioral outcomes and potential modifiers (age, gender, educational attainment) of such associations. STUDY DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study. METHODS: An online survey using anonymous network sampling was conducted in China from April to May 2020 using a 74-item questionnaire. A national sample of 10,545 adults in 31 provinces provided data on sociodemographic characteristics, COVID-19-related mental distress, and changes in behavioral outcomes. Structural equation models were used for data analyses. RESULTS: After adjusting for covariates, greater mental distress was associated with increased smoking (odds ratio [OR] = 1.42, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20-1.68 and OR = 1.54, 95% CI: 1.31-1.82 per one standard deviation [SD] increase in mental distress) and alcohol consumption (OR = 1.67, 95% CI: 1.45-1.92 and OR = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.24-1.75 per one SD increase in mental distress) among current smokers and drinkers and with both increased and decreased physical activity (ORs ranged from 1.32 to 1.56). Underweight adults were more likely to lose body weight (≥1 kg; OR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.30-2.04), whereas overweight adults were more likely to gain weight (OR = 1.61, 95% CI: 1.46-1.78) by the same amount. Association between mental distress and change in physical activity was stronger in adults aged ≥40 years (ORs ranged from 1.43 to 2.05) and those with high education (ORs ranged from 1.43 to 1.77). Mental distress was associated with increased smoking in males (OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.37-1.87) but not females (OR = 1.11, 95% CI: 0.82-1.51). CONCLUSIONS: Greater mental distress was associated with some positive and negative changes in behavioral outcomes during the pandemic. These findings inform the design of tailored public health interventions aimed to mitigate long-term negative consequences of mental distress on outcomes.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: There is a lack of mental health promotion and treatment services targeting HIV-positive men who have sex with men (HIVMSM) in China. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mental health promotion efficacy of an online intervention that combined Three Good Things (TGT) with electronic social networking (TGT-SN) and an intervention that used TGT only (TGT-only), compared with a control group. METHODS: We conducted a randomised controlled trial among HIVMSM in Chengdu, China. The participants were randomly assigned to the TGT-SN, TGT-only, and control groups. The participants in the TGT-SN group were divided into five social network groups and asked to post brief messages to the group about three good things that they had experienced and for which they felt grateful. The participants in the TGT-only group were only required to write down their three good things daily without sharing them with others. The control group received information about mental health promotion once a week for a month. The primary outcome was probable depression. Secondary outcomes were anxiety, positive and negative affect, gratitude, happiness and social support. These outcomes were assessed at baseline, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after the intervention. Repeated-measures analyses were conducted using generalised estimation equations. The study was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR-TRC-13003252). RESULTS: Between June 2013 and May 2015, 404 participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to either the TGT-SN (n = 129), TGT-only (n = 139) or control group (n = 136). The main effects of TGT-SN (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.75, 95% CI 0.52-1.09; p = 0.131) and TGT-only (aOR = 0.83, 95% CI 0.57-1.21; p = 0.332) in reducing depression were statistically non-significant. The participants of the TGT-SN group showed significantly lower anxiety symptoms (aOR = 0.62, 95% CI 0.43-0.89; p = 0.009) and negative affect (ß = -1.62, 95% CI 2.98 to -0.26; p = 0.019) over time compared with those of the control group. No significant main effect was found for any secondary outcomes for the TGT-only group. CONCLUSIONS: The novel intervention combining the TGT exercise with electronic social networking was found effective in reducing anxiety and negative affect among HIVMSM.

ABSTRACT

The x-ray absorption spectrum of N_{2}^{+} in the K-edge region has been measured by irradiation of ions stored in a cryogenic radio frequency ion trap with synchrotron radiation. We interpret the experimental results with the help of restricted active space multiconfiguration theory. Spectroscopic constants of the 1σ_{u}^{-1} ^{2}Σ_{u}^{+} state, and the two 1σ_{u}^{-1}3σ_{g}^{-1}1π_{g} ^{2}Π_{u} states are determined from the measurements. The charge of the ground state together with spin coupling involving several open shells give rise to double excitations and configuration mixing, and a complete breakdown of the orbital picture for higher lying core-excited states.

ABSTRACT

The size dependent electronic structure and separate spin and orbital magnetic moments of free Co[Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) cluster ions have been investigated by x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap. A very large orbital magnetic moment of [Formula: see text] per atom was determined for Co[Formula: see text], which is one order of magnitude larger than in the bulk metal. Large orbital magnetic moments per atom of ≈1 [Formula: see text] were also found for Co[Formula: see text], Co[Formula: see text], and Co[Formula: see text]. The orbital contribution to the total magnetic moment shows a non-monotonic cluster size dependence: The orbital contribution increases from a local minimum at n = 2 to a local maximum at n = 5 and then decreases with increasing cluster size. The 3d spin magnetic moment per atom is nearly constant and is solely defined by the number of 3d holes which shows that the 3d majority spin states are fully occupied, that is, 3d hole spin polarization is 100%.

Essentials The role of von Willebrand factor (VWF) domains in regulating platelet adhesion was studied in vivo. Multimeric VWF with spacers at the N- and C-terminus of VWF-A1 were systematically tested. N-terminal modified VWF avidly bound platelet GpIbα, causing VWD Type2B like phenotype in mice. Novel anti-D'D3 mAbs suggest that changes at the D'D3-A1 interface may be biologically relevant. SUMMARY: Background Previous ex vivo studies using truncated VWF (von Willebrand factor) suggest that domain-level molecular architecture may control platelet-GpIbα binding function. Objective We determined if this is the case with multimeric VWF in vivo. Methods Full-length human VWF ('hV') was modified with a 22-amino acid mucinous stretch at either the N-terminus of VWF-A1 to create 'hNV' or C-terminus to yield 'hCV'. This extends the physical distance between VWF-A1 and the adjacent domains by ~6 nm. Similar mucin inserts were also introduced into a human-murine chimera ('h[mA1]V') where murine-A1 replaced human-A1 in hV. This yielded 'h[mA1]NV' and 'h[mA1]CV', with N- and C-terminal inserts. The constructs were tested ex vivo and in vivo. Results Mucin insertion at the N-terminus, but not C-terminus, in both types of constructs resulted in >50-fold increase in binding to immobilized GpIbα. N-terminal insertion also resulted in greater shear-induced platelet activation, more thrombus formation on collagen, enhanced platelet accumulation and slower platelet translocation on immobilized VWF in microfluidics assays. Hydrodynamic injection-based expression of h[mA1]NV, but not h[mA1]V or h[mA1]CV, in VWF-/- mice caused profound thrombocytopenia, reduced plasma VWF concentrations, lower multimer distribution, and incessant tail bleeding that is reminiscent of von Willebrand disease type 2B. Platelet plugs were noted in the portal veins and hepatic arteries. An anti-D'D3 mAb DD3.3 that displays enhanced binding to VWF containing the N-terminal mucin insert also exhibited increased binding to wild-type VWF under shear and upon ristocetin addition. Conclusion Conformation changes at the VWF D'D3-A1 interface may be a key regulator of thrombosis in vivo. Structural features at the A1-A2 interface are likely of less significance.

ABSTRACT

The Φ9/24 ground state of the Ni2+ diatomic molecular cation is determined experimentally from temperature and magnetic-field-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap, where an electronic and rotational temperature of 7.4±0.2 K was reached by buffer gas cooling of the molecular ion. The contribution of the spin dipole operator to the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spin sum rule amounts to 7Tz=0.17±0.06µB per atom, approximately 11% of the spin magnetic moment. We find that, in general, homonuclear diatomic molecular cations of 3d transition metals seem to adopt maximum spin magnetic moments in their electronic ground states.

ABSTRACT

Detailed understanding of the mechanistic steps underlying tumor initiation and malignant progression is critical for insights of potentially novel therapeutic modalities. Cellular reprogramming is an approach of particular interest because it can provide a means to reset the differentiation state of the cancer cells and to revert these cells to a state of non-malignancy. Here, we investigated the relationship between cellular differentiation and malignant progression by the fusion of four independent mouse cancer cell lines from different tissues, each with differing developmental potentials, to pluripotent mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells. Fusion was accompanied by loss of differentiated properties of the four parental cancer cell lines and concomitant emergence of pluripotency, demonstrating the feasibility to reprogram the malignant and differentiative properties of cancer cells. However, the original malignant and differentiative phenotypes re-emerge upon withdrawal of the fused cells from the embryonic environment in which they were maintained. cDNA array analysis of the malignant hepatoma progression implicated a role for Foxa1, and silencing Foxa1 prevented the re-emergence of malignant and differentiation-associated gene expression. Our findings support the hypothesis that tumor progression results from deregulation of stem cells, and our approach provides a strategy to analyze possible mechanisms in the cancer initiation.

ABSTRACT

The impact of influenza on elderly can be severe and fatal. Influenza vaccination (IV) has been shown to be effective in reducing influenza-related complications, but the IV uptake among elderly in Hong Kong remains low. This study investigated the prevalence and factors associated with IV among Chinese elderly in Hong Kong using the Health Belief Model (HBM). A total of 1101 Chinese elderly aged over 65 was randomly selected and completed a phone interview. Background information, experience of and intention to receive IV and IV-related knowledge and perceptions based on the HBM were measured. Results showed that 48.5 and 49.5% of the participants have ever been vaccinated and intended to receive IV, respectively. Female gender, having chronic disease, and participating in community activities were significantly associated with previous IV. Knowledge of the fact that IV is required every year, lower perceived side effect, IV price lower than HK$150, and recommendations from health care providers was associated with both previous IV and intention to be vaccinated in the next year. Interventions promoting IV among elderly should disseminate knowledge regarding the necessity of IV and correct misconceptions about the side effects of IV.

ABSTRACT

The electronic structure and magnetic moments of free Mn2 (+) and Mn3 (+) are characterized by 2p x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap that is coupled to a synchrotron radiation beamline. Our results directly show that localized magnetic moments of 5 µB are created by 3d(5)((6)S) states at each ionic core, which are coupled ferromagnetically to form molecular high-spin states via indirect exchange that is mediated in both cases by a delocalized valence electron in a singly occupied 4s derived antibonding molecular orbital with an unpaired spin. This leads to total magnetic moments of 11 µB for Mn2 (+) and 16 µB for Mn3 (+), with no contribution of orbital angular momentum.

ABSTRACT

The magnetic moment of a single impurity atom in a finite free electron gas is studied in a combined x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy, charge transfer multiplet calculation, and density functional theory study of size-selected free chromium-doped gold clusters. The observed size dependence of the local magnetic moment can be understood as a transition from a local moment to a mixed valence regime. This shows that the Anderson impurity model essentially describes finite systems even though the discrete density of states introduces a significant deviation from a bulk metal, and the free electron gas is only formed by less than 10 electrons. Electronic shell closure in the gold host minimizes the interaction of localized impurity states with the confined free electron gas and preserves the magnetic moment of 5 µ_{B} fully in CrAu_{2}^{+} and almost fully in CrAu_{6}^{+}. Even for open-shell species, large local moments are observed that scale with the energy gap of the gold cluster. This indicates that an energy gap in the free electron gas stabilizes the local magnetic moment of the impurity atom.

ABSTRACT

The (6)Π electronic ground state of the Co2 (+) diatomic molecular cation has been assigned experimentally by x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap. Three candidates, (6)Φ, (8)Φ, and (8)Γ, for the electronic ground state of Fe2 (+) have been identified. These states carry sizable orbital angular momenta that disagree with theoretical predictions from multireference configuration interaction and density functional theory. Our results show that the ground states of neutral and cationic diatomic molecules of 3d transition elements cannot generally be assumed to be connected by a one-electron process.

ABSTRACT

Mental disorders are highly prevalent conditions with immense disease burden. To inform health and social services policy formulation, local psychiatric epidemiological data are required. The Hong Kong Mental Morbidity Survey is a 3-year population-based study in which 5700 community-dwelling Chinese adults aged between 16 and 75 years were interviewed with the aim of evaluating the prevalence, co-morbidity, functional impairment, physical morbidity, and social determinants of significant mental disorders in the population. This paper describes the background and design of the survey, and is the first territory-wide psychiatric epidemiological study in Hong Kong.
