ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the characteristics and effects of virtual reality (VR) intravenous injection training programs for nurses and nursing students, using Kirkpatrick's four-level model of educational evaluation. Kirkpatrick's framework is based on the premise that learning from training programs can be classified into four levels: reaction, learning, behavior, and results. DESIGN: A systematic review. DATA SOURCES: Literature searches were conducted of eight electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, EMBASE, DBpia, KISS, RISS, KoreaMed) to identify original research articles from each database's inception to March 2023. REVIEW METHODS: For the 13 selected articles, quality appraisal was performed using the RoB 2 and ROBINS-I tools for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs, respectively. RESULTS: Virtual intravenous simulators and desktop and immersive VR technologies were utilized in intravenous injection training. These VR technologies were applied either alone or in conjunction with simulators, focusing on junior nursing students without intravenous injection experience. We found a positive effect on nursing students' intravenous injection performance (Level 2: learning evaluation) in approximately half the studies. However, results were inconsistent due to measurement tools' diversity. In all studies, the degree of evaluation for Levels 1 (reaction evaluation), 3 (behavior evaluation), and 4 (results evaluation) of the Kirkpatrick Model was low. CONCLUSIONS: Desktop or immersive VR with low-fidelity or high-fidelity simulators should be provided to senior nursing students and new nurses for intravenous injection training. Additionally, standardized tools should be developed to accurately measure training effects. Finally, the Kirkpatrick Model's four levels should be evaluated to demonstrate the training programs' value.

BACKGROUND: By incorporating socio-cognitive mindfulness which has been under-examined in the nursing field, this study investigated the relationships between socio-cognitive mindfulness, moral sensitivity, dementia communication behaviors, and dementia nursing performance of nurses in long-term care hospitals. This study also examined the factors influencing nurses' dementia nursing performance. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 209 nurses from long-term care hospitals in Korea. Data were collected between August 1 and August 31, 2022. Participants completed the questionnaire assessing their socio-cognitive mindfulness, moral sensitivity, dementia communication behaviors, and dementia nursing performance. Pearson's correlation and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were performed for data analysis. RESULTS: Dementia nursing performance of the nurses in long-term care hospitals was positively related to their socio-cognitive mindfulness, moral sensitivity, and dementia communication behaviors. Furthermore, nurses' dementia communication behaviors, moral sensitivity, and total clinical career, in that order, were found to be the factors influencing their dementia nursing performance. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that the higher socio-cognitive mindfulness, moral sensitivity, and dementia communication behaviors, the higher dementia nursing performance, and that higher dementia nursing performance is associated with better dementia communication behaviors, greater moral sensitivity, and more extensive clinical experiences. This study provides a foundation for developing effective interventions to enhance dementia nursing performance in the future. To improve dementia nursing performance of nurses in long-term care hospitals, it is necessary to improve dementia communication behaviors and moral sensitivity, and prepare multilateral countermeasures to maintain nurses' clinical careers.

BACKGROUND: While research on meditative mindfulness in nursing is abundant, research on socio-cognitive mindfulness is in its early stages despite its potential advantages to nursing practice and nursing education. This study introduces the under-examined concept of socio-cognitive mindfulness to the nursing field. OBJECTIVE: To identify what is known in the research field of socio-cognitive mindfulness in nursing. Specific aims were to identify the effects of socio-cognitive mindfulness on nurses and nursing students, and the application of socio-cognitive mindfulness interventions and their effectiveness in nursing. DESIGN: A scoping review following the Arksey and O'Malley framework. METHODS: An electronic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Web of Science, ERIC, and ProQuest databases was conducted. The search included full-text papers published in peer-reviewed journals in English. The included studies were independently examined by the two authors to ensure the thorough inclusion of relevant research by screening of titles and abstracts and screening of full-texts. The selected papers were categorized based on the specific objectives of the review. RESULTS: Out of 5,798 papers, six quantitative studies and one mixed method study were included in the review. Among the seven studies, two studies investigated the effects of socio-cognitive mindfulness on nurses, four examined the effects of socio-cognitive mindfulness on nursing students, and one conducted an intervention study applying socio-cognitive mindfulness and identified its effects on nurses. The findings revealed several benefits of applying socio-cognitive mindfulness to nursing practice and nursing education. Specifically, socio-cognitive mindfulness enhanced nurses' and nursing students' positive emotions and effective emotion regulation, which would positively influence nurses' nursing performance as well as students' academic outcomes and quality of college life. CONCLUSIONS: This study raises researchers' awareness of the significance of socio-cognitive mindfulness in nursing, and strongly recommends applying socio-cognitive mindfulness to nursing practice and nursing education and evaluating its effects.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the psychological well-being (PWB) of university staff and factors that influence it is critical for developing intervention programs that promote PWB and enhance productivity and worker engagement. PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the level of PWB in university staff and identify personal, social, and workplace environmental factors related to their PWB. METHODS: A cross-sectional, correlational study design was used. A convenience sample of university staff was recruited from two universities in Texas. Participants completed an online questionnaire, which included Ryff's PWB scale to measure PWB, along with questions related to personal, social, and workplace factors. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to analyze the influence of these factors on the PWB of university staff. RESULTS: The PWB of university staff (n = 202) was significantly influenced by personal factors (i.e., race and perceived mental health status), social factors (i.e., social support of friends), and workplace environmental factors (i.e., physical demands). CONCLUSION/APPLICATION TO PRACTICE: To effectively promote PWB among university staff, occupational health nurses should proactively track and monitor their PWB. Policies and interventions should consider the various personal, social, and workplace environment factors identified in this study, such as mental health, social support resources, and physical demands.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Cardiometabolic disorders (CMD) such as hyperglycemia, obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia are the leading causes of mortality and significant public health concerns worldwide. With the advances in wireless technology, wearables have become popular for health promotion, but its impact on cardiometabolic health is not well understood. PURPOSE: A systematic literature review aimed to describe the features of wearables used for monitoring cardiometabolic health and identify the impact of using wearables on those cardiometabolic health indicators. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, and Science and Technology Collection databases was performed using keywords related to CMD risk indicators and wearables. The wearables were limited to sensors for blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), electrocardiogram (ECG), glucose, and cholesterol. INCLUDED STUDIES: 1) were published from 2016 to March 2021 in English, 2) focused on wearables external to the body, and 3) examined wearable use by individuals in daily life (not by health care providers). Protocol, technical, and non-empirical studies were excluded. RESULTS: Out of 53 studies, the types of wearables used were smartwatches (45.3%), patches (34.0%), chest straps (22.6%), wristbands (13.2%), and others (9.4%). HR (58.5%), glucose (28.3%), and ECG (26.4%) were the predominant indicators. No studies tracked BP or cholesterol. Additional features of wearables included physical activity, respiration, sleep, diet, and symptom monitoring. Twenty-two studies primarily focused on the use of wearables and reported direct impacts on cardiometabolic indicators; seven studies used wearables as part of a multi-modality approach and presented outcomes affected by a primary intervention but measured through CMD-sensor wearables; and 24 validated the precision and usability of CMD-sensor wearables. CONCLUSION: The impact of wearables on cardiometabolic indicators varied across the studies, indicating the need for further research. However, this body of literature highlights the potential of wearables to promote cardiometabolic health.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although mobile health (mHealth) apps for both health consumers and health care providers are increasingly common, their implementation is frequently unsuccessful when there is a misalignment between the needs of the user and the app's functionality. Nurses are well positioned to help address this challenge. However, nurses' engagement in mHealth app development remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to determine the extent of the evidence of the role of nurses in app development, delineate developmental phases in which nurses are involved, and to characterize the type of mHealth apps nurses are involved in developing. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review following the 6-stage methodology. We searched 14 databases to identify publications on the role of nurses in mHealth app development and hand searched the reference lists of relevant publications. Two independent researchers performed all screening and data extraction, and a third reviewer resolved any discrepancies. Data were synthesized and grouped by the Software Development Life Cycle phase, and the app functionality was described using the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics functionality scoring system. RESULTS: The screening process resulted in 157 publications being included in our analysis. Nurses were involved in mHealth app development across all stages of the Software Development Life Cycle but most frequently participated in design and prototyping, requirements gathering, and testing. Nurses most often played the role of evaluators, followed by subject matter experts. Nurses infrequently participated in software development or planning, and participation as patient advocates, research experts, or nurse informaticists was rare. CONCLUSIONS: Although nurses were represented throughout the preimplementation development process, nurses' involvement was concentrated in specific phases and roles.

ABSTRACT

AIM: This literature review examined the impact of the orientation or onboarding programs on the transition of foreign-educated nurses to a US healthcare setting and factors influencing their transition. BACKGROUND: Recruitment of foreign-educated nurses has been a solution to the ongoing nursing workforce shortage in the United States. However, they face various challenges in their transition to employment in the United States. Adequate orientation and continued support are needed for the successful transition of foreign-educated nurses. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in 2022 across PubMed, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, Google Scholar, and MEDLINE databases. This review selected only articles published between 2015 and 2022 in English that addressed foreign-educated nurses' transition issues in US healthcare settings. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The quality of the articles was appraised using the John Hopkins Evidence-based Practice tool. RESULTS: This review of 14 articles revealed that the quality of orientation and organizational support were positively associated with foreign-educated nurses' job satisfaction and turnover. Factors influencing foreign-educated nurses' transition included peer support, job assignment and workload, credentialing, communication and cultural adjustment, psychological factors, safety perceptions, work environment, and coping strategies. DISCUSSION: There was a lack of literature that evaluated orientation or onboarding programs for foreign-educated nurses. Further research is needed to explore the effectiveness of supportive programs in promoting their smooth transition. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE AND POLICY: Efficient onboarding or orientation programs and policies for foreign-educated nurses are crucial, considering the factors influencing their transition. Good programs and policies that prioritize the support, integration, and professional development of FENs will help maximize their contributions to health care.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this work was to provide a review of the implementation of data science-driven applications focused on structural or outcome-related nurse-sensitive indicators in the literature in 2021. By conducting this review, we aim to inform readers of trends in the nursing indicators being addressed, the patient populations and settings of focus, and lessons and challenges identified during the implementation of these tools. METHODS: We conducted a rigorous descriptive review of the literature to identify relevant research published in 2021. We extracted data on model development, implementation-related strategies and measures, lessons learned, and challenges and stakeholder involvement. We also assessed whether reports of data science application implementations currently follow the guidelines of the Developmental and Exploratory Clinical Investigations of DEcision support systems driven by AI (DECIDE-AI) framework. RESULTS: Of 4,943 articles found in PubMed (NLM) and CINAHL (EBSCOhost), 11 were included in the final review and data extraction. Systems leveraging data science were developed for adult patient populations and were primarily deployed in hospital settings. The clinical domains targeted included mortality/deterioration, utilization/resource allocation, and hospital-acquired infections/COVID-19. The composition of development teams and types of stakeholders involved varied. Research teams more frequently reported on implementation methods than implementation results. Most studies provided lessons learned that could help inform future implementations of data science systems in health care. CONCLUSION: In 2021, very few studies report on the implementation of data science-driven applications focused on structural- or outcome-related nurse-sensitive indicators. This gap in the sharing of implementation strategies needs to be addressed in order for these systems to be successfully adopted in health care settings.

BACKGROUND: The number of PhD nursing programs in the U.S. has increased, but the number of nursing students entering and completing these programs remains stagnant. It is crucial to consider innovative approaches to recruit, nurture, and graduate more diverse nursing students. PURPOSE: This article presents the perceptions of PhD nursing students regarding their programs, experiences, and strategies to support their academic success. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional, descriptive design. Data were obtained from an online 65-question student survey completed between December 2020 and April 2021. RESULTS: A total of 568 students from 53 nursing schools completed the survey. Five themes emerged regarding the barriers students experienced during their programs: Faculty issues, time management and balance, insufficient preparation for dissertation research, financial barriers, and COVID-19 impact. Student recommendations for improving PhD nursing programs were also captured in five themes: Program improvement, coursework improvement, research opportunities, faculty, and dissertation. The low numbers of male, non-binary, Hispanic/Latino, minority, and international survey respondents indicate a need for innovative recruitment and retention strategies to increase diversity of PhD students. CONCLUSION: PhD program leaders should complete a gap analysis based on the recommendations in the new AACN position statement and perceptions of PhD students reported from this survey. By doing so, PhD programs will be better positioned to implement a roadmap for improvement to better prepare the next generation of nurse scientists, leaders, and scholars.

AIM: This integrative review aimed to identify nursing students' experiences of handoff practices and the effects of handoff education in the curriculum on nursing student learning outcomes. BACKGROUND: Appropriate handoff communication skills are essential for nursing students to maintain patient safety and prevent adverse events. METHOD: A systematic literature search was conducted with keywords related to nursing, student, and handoff in April 2020. Articles should focus on nursing students' handoff education published in English in 2015-2020. Eight articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. RESULTS: Nursing students reported discrepancies in handoff experiences; diverse factors influenced their handoff experiences, such as knowledge, anxiety, confidence, and type of student supervision. Various handoff educations were implemented across studies. Some handoff educations significantly improved nursing students' attitudes toward other disciplinary providers, satisfaction, confidence, quality, and clarity in handoff communication; some did not substantially affect their selected outcomes. CONCLUSION: This review identified that there are still limited handoff experiences among nursing students and many factors affecting opportunities for their handoff experience. Some handoff education (e.g., structured handoff formats, role-play, simulated scenarios) effectively improved students' communication clarity, confidence levels, and handoff education satisfaction. More handoff education is needed for nursing students to learn safe and quality handoff practices.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and most patients with cancer in South Korea die in hospitals. Oncology nurses experience physical, emotional, and occupational challenges associated with the psychological burden of caring for dying patients. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the coping strategies used by oncology nurses to deal with the psychological burden of patient deaths. METHODS: In this descriptive qualitative study, 10 oncology nurses who had recently experienced a patient's death were recruited via snowball sampling. All were female, with a mean age of 32.9 years (range, 27-44 years), and their mean working duration was 9.9 (range, 3-23) years. Participants were interviewed individually face-to-face 3 times, with each interview lasting 1 to 1.5 hours. RESULTS: Oncology nurses coped with the psychological burden of a patient's death in the following 4 ways: ( a ) avoiding patient deaths to the extent possible, ( b ) reflecting upon the meaning of life and death, ( c ) suppressing their emotional distress over the patient's death, and ( d ) becoming kinder and more caring toward people around them. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that oncology nurses struggle to cope with the psychological burden of patient deaths. Oncology nurses are affected both negatively and positively by experiencing death as they provide end-of-life care. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Oncology nurses need education or counseling to reduce the psychological burden of caring for dying patients with cancer. Hospital administrators need to continuously identify ways to reduce the psychological burden of oncology nurses providing end-of-life care.

BACKGROUND: Incorporating socio-cognitive mindfulness, which has not received much attention from nursing researchers, this study investigated the structural relationships between socio-cognitive mindfulness, everyday creativity, and clinical competence among nursing students. This study also explored the mediating effect of everyday creativity. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed with 222 nursing students in South Korea. Students completed the questionnaire evaluating their own socio-cognitive mindfulness, everyday creativity, and clinical competence. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling and path analysis. RESULTS: Socio-cognitive mindfulness positively influenced everyday creativity (ß = 0.791, p < 0.01), and everyday creativity also positively influenced clinical competence (ß = 0.470, p < 0.01). However, the relationship between socio-cognitive mindfulness and clinical competence was not significant. Importantly, everyday creativity fully mediated the relationship between socio-cognitive mindfulness and clinical competence (a × b = 0.372, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that socio-cognitive mindfulness effectively enhances nursing students' clinical competence by improving their everyday creativity. The mediating result highlights the significance of everyday creativity in nursing education, underscoring the necessity for training programs aimed at cultivating creativity. This research offers a basis for developing programs that concentrate on socio-cognitive mindfulness and everyday creativity, with the goal of enhancing the clinical competence of nursing students.

ABSTRACT

(1) Background: Acknowledging scant research on integrating mindfulness, empathy, and self-leadership among female university students, this study aimed to investigate the relationships among these three variables, as well as the mediating effect of empathy. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed with 127 female sophomores in a mindfulness-based liberal arts class at K Women's University in South Korea. Participants completed a self-reported questionnaire measuring levels of mindfulness, empathy, and self-leadership. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and correlations between the variables using the SPSS 28 program. The Jamovi 2.2.5 program was used to analyze the mediating effect of empathy. (3) Results: The levels of mindfulness, empathy, and self-leadership were higher than in previous studies. Mindfulness was positively related to empathy (r = 0.407, p < 0.001) and self-leadership (r = 0.635, p < 0.001); empathy was also positively associated with self-leadership (r = 0.635, p < 0.001). Furthermore, empathy mediated the relationship between mindfulness and self-leadership (ß = 0.187, p < 0.001). (4) Conclusions: The findings indicate that mindfulness is helpful in improving university students' self-leadership by reinforcing their empathy, and that an integrated training program of mindfulness and empathy could produce positive effects on promoting self-leadership. The findings can be utilized as a basis for developing programs to improve mindfulness and empathy, eventually improving students' self-leadership.

BACKGROUND: Acknowledging the under-examined research of socio-cognitive mindfulness and Gross's emotion regulation strategies in nursing, this study investigated the relationships between socio-cognitive mindfulness, emotion regulation (i.e., reappraisal and suppression), and empathy among nurses. It also explored the mediating effects of emotion regulation. METHODS: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted in a sample of 245 nurses from two university hospitals in South Korea. Convenience sampling was used to collect data between August 3 and September 29, 2020. Participants completed the questionnaire measuring their socio-cognitive mindfulness, emotion regulation, and empathy. Structural equation modeling and path analysis were conducted for data analysis. RESULTS: Socio-cognitive mindfulness positively influenced emotion regulation of reappraisal (ß = 0.404, p < 0.01) and empathy (ß = 0.402, p < 0.01), but negatively influenced emotion regulation of suppression (ß = -0.149, p < 0.05). Reappraisal positively influenced empathy (ß = 0.341, p < 0.01), whereas suppression negatively influenced empathy (ß = -0.127, p < 0.05). Importantly, emotion regulation of reappraisal mediated the association between socio-cognitive mindfulness and empathy (a X b = 0.107, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that socio-cognitive mindfulness is effective in improving empathy among nurses by enhancing reappraisal. This study can provide a foundation for developing socio-cognitive mindfulness or emotion regulation programs to improve empathy among nurses, which would ultimately lead to better nursing performance by increasing patient satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Most mHealth app users rely on an app's rankings, star ratings, or reviews, which may not reflect users' individual healthcare needs. To help healthcare providers, researchers, and users select an optimal mHealth app, the Method of App Selection based on User Needs (MASUN) 1.01 was developed and tested in prior research. Initial testing found the need for improvement. OBJECTIVE: This multiple-phase study aimed to simplify and improve MASUN 1.0, resulting in MASUN 2.0, and verify the feasibility and usability of MASUN 2.0. METHODS: This study was conducted in three phases: (1) modification of MASUN 1.0 to improve its importance, applicability, relevance, and clarity, in consultation with 21 experts in medical or nursing informatics; (2) validation of the draft MASUN 2.0, with 13 experts; and (3) feasibility testing of MASUN 2.0 and usability evaluation of the best app found through MASUN 2.0. Menstrual apps were used to test the framework. RESULTS: From Phases 1 and 2, MASUN 2.0, the framework for mHealth App selection, was derived with improved simplicity, usability, and applicability through a reduced number of tasks and time required. In Phase 3, after screening and scoring 2377 menstrual apps, five candidate apps were selected and evaluated by five clinical experts, five app experts, and five potential users. Finally, 194 users evaluated the usability of the app selected as the best. The best app helped users understand their health-related syndromes and patterns. Additionally, user-provided scores for impact, usefulness, and ease of use for the app were higher than for others. CONCLUSIONS: This study successfully modified MASUN 1.0 into MASUN 2.0 and verified MASUN 2.0 through content validity, feasibility, and usability testing. The selected apps through MASUN 2.0 helped health consumers more easily address health discomfort. Future research should extend this work to an automated system and different medical conditions with multiple stakeholders for digital health equity.

ABSTRACT

Service design is an innovative tool used to improve the quality of patient experience, therefore, making it necessary for nurses to be able to implement it. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a training program for patient experience-based nursing service design (PEN-SD) on clinical nurses' compassion and problem-solving ability. This study employed a mixed-methods design: a one-group, pretest-posttest design was used as the quantitative approach, and structured interviews were used as the qualitative approach. The participants were 21 nurses recruited from a university hospital in Korea. A PEN-SD training program was conducted from September 1 to October 6, 2018. After the training program, the participants' compassion significantly improved (p = .025) but there was no significant difference in their problem-solving ability (p = .313). In the structured interviews, majority of the participants (n = 17) felt that they were able to consider problems from the patient's perspective. They also reported being able to identify solutions to problems through careful observation (n = 5). The PEN-SD training program was effective in improving compassion among nurses.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Male nursing students face challenges in the nursing profession because of its female-centered nature. In particular, most male students in South Korea must complete military service while in college. Although these kinds of situations may make it difficult for them to adapt to college life, the number of male nursing students is gradually increasing. Therefore, it is important to identify the influencing factors to promote male nursing students' successful adaptation to college life. PURPOSE: This study was developed to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy, social support, stress coping, and adaptation to college life among male nursing students in Korea. Factors that influence their adaptation to college life were also analyzed. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 217 male nursing students from seven colleges in Korea. Participants completed a questionnaire that was designed to measure self-efficacy, social support, stress coping, and adaptation to college life. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t test, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. RESULTS: Male nursing students' self-efficacy, social support, stress coping, and adaptation to college life were shown to all positively correlate with each other. The main factors influencing adaptation to college life were social support, self-efficacy, satisfaction with major, and problem-solving-centered stress coping. CONCLUSIONS: Strategies to enhance social support, self-efficacy, satisfaction with major, and problem-solving-centered stress coping should be developed to improve male nursing students' adaptation to college life.

BACKGROUND: Recognizing the under-examined socio-cognitive mindfulness and achievement emotions in nursing, this study aimed to examine the relationships between grit, socio-cognitive mindfulness, and achievement emotions among nursing students, as well as the mediating effects of socio-cognitive mindfulness. METHODS: This study utilized a cross-sectional design. A total of 220 nursing students in Korea completed the questionnaire measuring the levels of grit, socio-cognitive mindfulness, and achievement emotions. To analyze data, structural equation modeling and path analysis were performed. RESULTS: Grit was positively related to socio-cognitive mindfulness and positive achievement emotions but negatively related to negative emotions. Socio-cognitive mindfulness was positively related to positive emotions but negatively related to negative emotions. In addition, the mediating effects of socio-cognitive mindfulness were found in the association between grit and achievement emotions in nursing students. CONCLUSIONS: Grittier students tend to have higher socio-cognitive mindfulness and positive emotions but lower negative emotions in learning environments. Mediating effects highlight the benefits of socio-cognitive mindfulness in the context of nursing education, providing the basis for developing practical mindfulness programs to cultivate nursing students' socio-cognitive mindfulness.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The term "data science" encompasses several methods, many of which are considered cutting edge and are being used to influence care processes across the world. Nursing is an applied science and a key discipline in health care systems in both clinical and administrative areas, making the profession increasingly influenced by the latest advances in data science. The greater informatics community should be aware of current trends regarding the intersection of nursing and data science, as developments in nursing practice have cross-professional implications. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to summarize the latest (calendar year 2020) research and applications of nursing-relevant patient outcomes and clinical processes in the data science literature. METHODS: We conducted a rapid review of the literature to identify relevant research published during the year 2020. We explored the following 16 topics: (1) artificial intelligence/machine learning credibility and acceptance, (2) burnout, (3) complex care (outpatient), (4) emergency department visits, (5) falls, (6) health care-acquired infections, (7) health care utilization and costs, (8) hospitalization, (9) in-hospital mortality, (10) length of stay, (11) pain, (12) patient safety, (13) pressure injuries, (14) readmissions, (15) staffing, and (16) unit culture. RESULTS: Of 16,589 articles, 244 were included in the review. All topics were represented by literature published in 2020, ranging from 1 article to 59 articles. Numerous contemporary data science methods were represented in the literature including the use of machine learning, neural networks, and natural language processing. CONCLUSION: This review provides an overview of the data science trends that were relevant to nursing practice in 2020. Examinations of such literature are important to monitor the status of data science's influence in nursing practice.
