ABSTRACT

Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are detrimental to human health and the environment. With the commercial production of PCNs banned, unintentional releases have emerged as a significant environmental source. However, relevant information is still scarce. In this study, provincial emissions for eight PCNs homologues from 37 sources in the Chinese mainland during the period of 1960-2019 were estimated based on a source-specific and time-varying emission factor database. The results showed that the total PCNs emissions in 2019 reached 757.0 kg with Hebei ranked at the top among all the provinces and iron & steel industry as the biggest source. Low-chlorinated PCNs comprised 90% of emissions by mass, while highly chlorinated PCNs dominated in terms of toxicity, highlighting divergent priorities for mitigating emissions and safeguarding human health. The emissions showed an overall upward trend from 1960 to 2019 driven by emission increase from iron & steel industry in terms of source, and from North China and East China in terms of geographic area. Per-capita emissions followed an inverted U-shaped environmental Kuznets curve while emission intensities decreased with increasing per-capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) following a nearly linear pattern when log-transformed.

ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease (CCVD) is a complex disease with a long latency period, and the most effective diagnosis and treatment methods are risk assessment and preventive interventions before onset. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Zhu-Ye-Qing wine (ZYQW) has the effect of invigorating blood and removing blood stasis. However, whether ZYQW can improve the progression of CCVD has not been reported. This study aims to explore the possible mechanism of ZYQW on CCVD through network pharmacology, and finally 249 potential targets of ZYQW and 2080 potential targets of CCVD are obtained. The key targets mainly include MAPK3, TP53, RELA, MAPK1 and AKT1. The main KEGG pathways include TNF signaling pathway, lipid and atherosclerosis pathway signaling pathway. The components in ZYQW are identified by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-CQE-CQE-MS/MS). Through network pharmacology, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation, the potential key components and prevention mechanisms of ZYQW in the prevention of CCVD are determined. ZYQW may be an effective and safe health food for the prevention of CCVD, providing guidance and basis for the further development of medicinal foods.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Granular data on breast cancer (BC) are pertinent for surveillance, planning, and monitoring of cancer care delivery. We determined the trends in clinical presentation, management, and survival of women with BC in a multiethnic middle-income Asian setting over 15 years. METHODS: Data of 7,478 Malaysian women newly diagnosed with invasive BC between 2005 and 2019 from three hospital-based cancer registries were included. Trends in demographic, tumor, and treatment characteristics were compared across period 1 (P1): 2005-2009, period 2 (P2): 2010-2014, and period 3 (P3): 2015-2019. Overall survival and net survival were determined. RESULTS: More women in P3 than P1 were older than 60 years at diagnosis. Only a marginal increase in proportion of women with stage I disease was observed (23.7% v 27.2% in P1 and P3, respectively, P = .004). Nonetheless, patients were increasingly presenting with smaller tumors, fewer axillary node involvement, well-differentiated tumors, and hormone receptor expression in recent times. Proportion of women with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-overexpressed tumors significantly decreased. Among indicated patients, receipt of anticancer therapies was somewhat similar over the calendar periods, except for neoadjuvant chemotherapy and anti-HER2 therapy, where increases in administration were noted. Significant improvements in survival were observed over the 15 years, particularly for HER2-overexpressed BCs. CONCLUSION: Although the improvements in BC survival that we have observed validate ongoing cancer control efforts and treatment advances, study findings suggest that more could be done for earlier detection and improved access to effective therapies in our settings.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chylous ascites is caused by disruption of the lymphatic system, which is characterized by the accumulation of a turbid fluid containing high levels of triglycerides within the abdominal cavity. The two most common causes are cirrhosis and tuberculosis, and colon signer ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) due to the use of immunosuppressants is extremely rare in cirrhotic patients after liver transplantation, making it prone to misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis. CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old man who underwent liver transplantation and was administered with immunosuppressants for 8 months was admitted with a 3-month history of progressive abdominal distention. Initially, based on lymphoscintigraphy and lymphangiography, lymphatic obstruction was considered, and cystellar chyli decompression with band lysis and external membrane stripping of the lymphatic duct was performed. However, his abdominal distention was persistent without resolution. Abdominal paracentesis revealed allogenic cells in the ascites, and immunohistochemistry analysis revealed adenocarcinoma cells with phenotypic features suggestive of a gastrointestinal origin. Gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed, and biopsy showed atypical signet ring cells in the ileocecal valve. The patient eventually died after a three-month follow-up due to progression of the tumor. CONCLUSION: Colon SRCC, caused by immunosuppressants, is an unusual but un-neglected cause of chylous ascites.

ABSTRACT

Polyolefins such as polyethylenes and polypropylenes are the most-produced plastic waste globally, yet are difficult to convert into useful products due to their unreactivity. Pyrolysis is a practical method for large-scale treatment of mixed, contaminated plastic, allowing for their conversion into industrially-relevant petrochemicals. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), despite their tremendous utility in heterogenous catalysis, have been overlooked for polyolefin depolymerization due to their perceived thermal instabilities and inability of polyethylenes and polypropylenes to penetrate their pores. Herein, we demonstrate the viability of UiO-66 MOFs containing coordinatively-unsaturated zirconia nodes, as effective catalysts for pyrolysis that significantly enhances the yields of valuable liquid and gas hydrocarbons, whilst halving the amounts of residual solids produced. Reactions occur on the Lewis-acidic UiO-66 zirconia nodes, without the need for noble metals, and yields aliphatic product distributions distinctly different from the aromatic-rich hydrocarbons from zeolite catalysis. We also demonstrate the first unambiguous characterization of polyolefin penetration into UiO-66 pores at pyrolytic temperatures, allowing access to the abundant Zr-oxo nodes within the MOF interior for efficient C-C cleavage. Our work highlights the potential of MOFs as highly-designable heterogeneous catalysts for depolymerization of plastics which can complement conventional catalysts in reactivity.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we have utilized theoretical calculations to predict the reaction active sites of naproxen when reacting with radicals and to further study the thermodynamics and kinetics of the reactions with ·OH and SO4-·. The evidence, derived from the average local ionization energy and electrostatic potential, points to the naphthalene ring as the preferred site of attack, especially for the C2, C6, C9, and C10 sites. The changes in Gibbs free energy and enthalpy of the reactions initiated by ·OH and SO4-· ranged between -19.6 kcal/mol - 26.3 kcal/mol and -22.3 kcal/mol -18.5 kcal/mol, respectively. More in-depth investigation revealed that RA2 pathway for ·OH exhibited the lowest free energy of activation, suggesting this reaction is more inclined to proceed. The second-order rate constant results indicate the ·OH attacking reaction is faster than reactions initiated by SO4·-, yet controlled by diffusion. The consistency between theoretical findings and experimental data underscores the validity of this computational method for our study.

BACKGROUND: The SET domain group (SDG) genes encode histone lysine methyltransferases, which regulate gene transcription by altering chromatin structure and play pivotal roles in plant flowering determination. However, few studies have investigated their role in the regulation of flowering in upland cotton. RESULTS: A total of 86 SDG genes were identified through genome-wide analysis in upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). These genes were unevenly distributed across 25 chromosomes. Cluster analysis revealed that the 86 GhSDGs were divided into seven main branches. RNA-seq data and qRT‒PCR analysis revealed that lysine methyltransferase 3 (KMT3) genes were expressed at high levels in stamens, pistils and other floral organs. Using virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS), functional characterization of GhKMT3;1a and GhKMT3;2a revealed that, compared with those of the controls, the GhKMT3;1a- and GhKMT3;2a-silenced plants exhibited later budding and flowering and lower plant heightwere shorter. In addition, the expression of flowering-related genes (GhAP1, GhSOC1 and GhFT) significantly decreased and the expression level of GhSVP significantly increased in the GhKMT3;1a- and GhKMT3;2a-silenced plants compared with the control plants. CONCLUSION: A total of 86 SDG genes were identified in upland cotton, among which GhKMT3;1a and GhKMT3;2a might regulate flowering by affecting the expression of GhAP1, GhSOC1, GhFT and GhSVP. These findings will provide genetic resources for advanced molecular breeding in the future.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Glymphatic system is a recently discovered macroscopic waste clearance system associated with numerous neurological diseases. However, little is known about glymphatic system development in neonates. We sought to evaluate diffusion along the perivascular space (ALPS) index, a proxy for glymphatic system function, in neonates and investigate its potential associations with maturation, sex, and preterm birth. METHODS: Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data in 418 neonates, including 92 preterm neonates (57 males) and 326 term neonates (175 males), from the Developing Human Connectome Project were used for evaluating ALPS index. Linear regression modeling was performed to assess group differences in the ALPS index according to preterm birth and sex. Pearson's and partial correlation analysis were performed to assess the association between the ALPS index and gestational age (GA) as well as postmenstrual age (PMA) at MRI. Moderation analysis was performed to assess the moderation effect of preterm birth on the relationship between the ALPS index and PMA. RESULTS: Compared to term neonates, preterm neonates exhibited lower ALPS indices (p < 0.001). The ALPS index positively correlated with PMA (p = 0.004) and GA (p < 0.001). Preterm birth (p = 0.013) had a significant moderation effect on the relationship between the ALPS index and PMA. Sex had no significant direct effect (p = 0.639) or moderation effect (p = 0.333) on ALPS index. INTERPRETATION: Glymphatic system development is a dynamic process in neonates, which can be moderated by preterm birth, the ALPS index could serve as a sensitive biomarker for monitoring this process. Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) is a cluster of behavioral problems that severely affect an individual's functioning. Currently, there is no consensus on the main clinical features of CDS, and further exploration in large samples is needed. Using a cluster-stratified random sampling method, 72,106 children and adolescents were recruited from five provinces in mainland China for this study. Using both the traditional two-factor scoring method and the CBCL DSM-oriented scales, we assessed individual behavioral problems from psychopathological and DSM-oriented perspectives. Network analysis was employed to explore the relationship between CDS and behavioral problems. The various networks were compared by gender and age subgroups. Among 72,106 participants (mean age, 11.49 years; minimum age, 5 years; maximum age, 16 years), there were 36,449 males (50.5%) and 35,657 females (49.5%). From a psychopathological perspective, the motor symptoms node was associated with the sad node and the withdrawn node, while the cognitive symptoms node was linked to the nervous node and the self-conscious node. In terms of gender, males had stronger associations of the motor symptoms node with the sad node and the withdrawn node than females (P = 0.043), and weaker associations of the cognitive symptoms node with the nervous node than females (P = 0.027). In terms of growth stage, the adolescent group had stronger associations of the cognitive symptoms node with the nervous node and the self-conscious node than the child group (P = 0.016, 0.001). From DSM perspective, motor symptoms node were associated with sad node, and cognitive symptoms node were related to can't concentrate node, nervous node, and worthless node. With increasing age, there was an upward trend in the strength of the cognitive and motor symptoms node. CDS is closely linked to psychological and behavioral issues, especially internalizing problems, with differences observed by gender and growth stage. The connection between CDS and the affective, anxiety, and ADH symptoms is particularly pronounced.

Introduction: This study characterized Vibrio alginolyticus isolated from seafood and freshwater products in China (2020). Methods and Results: In total, 122 (95.31%) V. alginolyticus isolates were resistant to at least 1 antibiotic category, and 2 (1.56%) isolates were resistant to at least 3 antibiotic categories and belong to multi-drug resistance (MDR) isolates. A high prevalence rate was observed to be blaCARB (98.04%) encoding beta-lactam resistance, followed by tet (97.06%) encoding tetracycline resistance and fos (4.90%) encoding resistance to fosfomycin. Among the 57 V. alginolyticus isolates, the commonest virulence genes were type III secretion system translocated gene vopD, vopB, and vcrH (54.4%, 31/57), type III secretion system regulated gene tyeA (54.39%), followed by vscI and vscF (50.88%) encoded type III secretion system inner rod protein and needle protein, respectively. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) showed considerable genetic diversity, with 34 distinct sequence types (STs) identified among 55 isolates. ST421 (n = 5), ST166 (n = 4), ST523 (n = 3), ST516 (n = 3), and ST507 (n = 3) were dominant STs among 55 V. alginolyticus isolates. Discussion: These findings highlight the widespread occurrence of V. alginolyticus in both freshwater and seafood products, underscoring the critical need for vigilant monitoring of these bacteria. Such measures are essential for ensuring effective food safety management and safeguarding public health.

Ginseng, a highly esteemed herbal medicine, has been utilized over 5000 years, predominantly in Far Eastern countries. Ginseng is categorized into garden ginseng (GG) and ginseng under forest (FG). However, in contrast to FG, excessive intake of GG may lead to potential adverse effects due to disruption of epithelial cell integrity, and the specific population groups that may be at higher risk. In this work, untargeted metabolomics were used to determine the heterogeneity between GG and FG, the data indicates that the content of Ethyl caffeate, Homoorientin, Citric acid and Quinic acid in GG were higher than in FG. Mass spectrometry imaging showed that ethyl caffeate and Homoorientin were concentrated on the brownish yellow exocarp of the primary root. Our experiments demonstrated that excessive exposure to ethyl caffeate and Homoorientin exacerbated the inflammatory response of HUVECs and reduced the expression of cell junctions. This suggest that the compounds causing adverse effects from excessive intake of GG are mainly concentrated in the yellow exocarp of the primary root of GG. These results suggest that untargeted metabolomics coupled with MALDI-MSI can visualize the spatial distribution of endogenous differential molecules of the same herb in different growth environments or developmental stages.

ABSTRACT

Mechanical thrombectomy has emerged as a promising treatment for acute ischemic stroke caused by large vessel occlusion. However, cases involving cancerous emboli retrieved during endovascular embolectomy are rare. We present a case of a 65-year-old man with a history of heavily treated rectal cancer, who developed a middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction due to metastatic adenocarcinoma. The patient presented with sudden onset right-side weakness, right facial palsy, global aphasia, and left gaze deviation, with a National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score of 16. Following intravenous thrombolysis, endovascular thrombectomy was performed, achieving nearly complete recanalization. Pathological examination of the retrieved thrombus revealed metastatic adenocarcinoma of rectal origin. The patient's neurological deficits gradually improved, and he was successfully discharged to undergo further palliative therapy. This case underscores the importance of considering mechanical thrombectomy for patients with advanced solid organ malignancy presenting with acute ischemic stroke, even when the etiology could be a tumor embolus. Our findings highlight the potential for mechanical thrombectomy to restore neurological function in such cases, allowing patients to proceed to the next level of care with a reasonably good post-stroke quality of life.

Background: Physical activity has been shown to have an effect on Carotid plaque (CP) which is a predictor of Cardiovascular disease (CVD). Studies have shown that physical activity can alter the composition of gut microbiota, whether its influence on CP was mediated by gut microbiota has yet to be proved. Methods: We conducted a case-control study involving 30 CP patients and 31 controls. Logistic regression was used to analyze the association between CP and physical activity. LefSe was used to explore the association between gut microbiota and physical activity as well as CP, and PhyloMed was used to examine the mediating effect of gut microbiota in the association between physical activity and CP. Results: After adjusting for potential confounders, adequate physical activity showed a significant association with a decreased risk of CP (ORadj: 0.25, 95%CI: 0.06, 0.97). CP was associated with enrichment in the order Bacteroidales within the phylum Bacteroidetes and the predominant microbiota in individuals without plaque was the order Clostridiales (LDA scores >3). Individuals with adequate physical activity had a higher abundance of the order Clostridiales, while the order Bacteroidetes was enriched in individuals with inadequate physical activity (LDA scores >3). The PhyloMed revealed a significant mediation effect of gut microbiota in the association between physical activity and CP (p = 0.03). Conclusion: Adequate physical activity was significantly associated with a decreased risk of CP, and this association was mediated by an increase in the abundance of gut microbiota in the order Clostridiales.

ABSTRACT

The intestinal microbiome constitutes a sophisticated and massive ecosystem pivotal for maintaining gastrointestinal equilibrium and mucosal immunity via diverse pathways. The gut microbiota is continuously reshaped by multiple environmental factors, thereby influencing overall wellbeing or predisposing individuals to disease state. Many observations reveal an altered microbiome composition in individuals with autoimmune conditions, coupled with shifts in metabolic profiles, which has spurred ongoing development of therapeutic interventions targeting the microbiome. This review delineates the microbial consortia of the intestine, their role in sustaining gastrointestinal stability, the association between the microbiome and immune-mediated pathologies, and therapeutic modalities focused on microbiome modulation. We emphasize the entire role of the intestinal microbiome in human health and recommend microbiome modulation as a viable strategy for disease prophylaxis and management. However, the application of gut microbiota modification for the treatment of immune-related diseases, such as fecal microbiota transplantation and probiotics, remain quite challenging. Therefore, more research is needed into the role and mechanisms of these therapeutics.

In most types of erectile dysfunction, particularly in advanced stages, typical pathological features observed are reduced parenchymal cells coupled with increased tissue fibrosis. However, the current treatment methods have shown limited success in reversing these pathologic changes. Recent research has revealed that changes in autophagy levels, along with alterations in apoptosis and fibrosis-related proteins, are linked to the progression of erectile dysfunction, suggesting a significant association. Autophagy, known to significantly affect cell fate and tissue fibrosis, is currently being explored as a potential treatment modality for erectile dysfunction. However, these present studies are still in their nascent stage, and there are limited experimental data available. This review analyzes erectile dysfunction from a pathological perspective. It provides an in-depth overview of how autophagy is involved in the apoptotic processes of smooth muscle and endothelial cells and its role in the fibrotic processes occurring in the cavernosum. This study aimed to develop a theoretical framework for the potential effectiveness of autophagy in preventing and treating erectile dysfunction, thus encouraging further investigation among researchers in this area.

Brain glymphatic dysfunction is critical in neurodegenerative processes. While animal studies have provided substantial insights, understandings in humans remains limited. Recent attention has focused on the non-invasive evaluation of brain glymphatic function. However, its association with brain parenchymal lesions in large-scale population remains under-investigated. In this cross-sectional analysis of 1030 participants (57.14 ± 9.34 years, 37.18% males) from the Shunyi cohort, we developed an automated pipeline to calculate diffusion-weighted image analysis along the perivascular space (ALPS), with a lower ALPS value indicating worse glymphatic function. The automated ALPS showed high consistency with the manual calculation of this index (ICC = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.662-0.898). We found that those with older age and male sex had lower automated ALPS values (ß = -0.051, SE = 0.004, p < .001, per 10 years, and ß = -0.036, SE = 0.008, p < .001, respectively). White matter hyperintensity (ß = -2.458, SE = 0.175, p < .001) and presence of lacunes (OR = 0.004, 95% CI < 0.002-0.016, p < .001) were significantly correlated with decreased ALPS. The brain parenchymal and hippocampal fractions were significantly associated with decreased ALPS (ß = 0.067, SE = 0.007, p < .001 and ß = 0.040, SE = 0.014, p = .006, respectively) independent of white matter hyperintensity. Our research implies that the automated ALPS index is potentially a valuable imaging marker for the glymphatic system, deepening our understanding of glymphatic dysfunction.

Objective: An estimated 21% to 58.8% of U.S. college student populations experience food insecurity (FI)-that is, limited or uncertain access to adequate food. Ameliorating this FI requires the involvement of college administrations. This study seeks to explore campus administrators' understanding of-and support for-students who experience FI. Participants: Thirty administrators at a university on the West Coast participated in semi-structured interviews. Methods: All interviews were transcribed verbatim. The transcripts were analyzed using the grounded theory approach. Results: Though participants understood the concept of FI, the majority underestimated the scope of the problem and didn't believe it had been treated as a priority. They identified competing resources and concerns, along with other factors like low awareness, as barriers to addressing FI. Conclusion: Although administrators were aware of the existence of FI on their campus, this study's results allude to the importance of providing further necessary FI education for administrators.

ABSTRACT

The persistent challenge of poor recovery characteristics of NO2 sensors operated at room temperature remains significant. However, the development of In2O3-based gas sensing materials provides a promising approach to accelerate response and recovery for sub-ppm of NO2 detection at room temperature. Herein, we propose a simple two-step method to synthesize a one-dimensional (1D) In2O3@ZnO heterostructure material with hollow microtubes, by coupling metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (MIL-68 (In)) and zinc ions. Meanwhile, the In2O3@ZnO composite-based gas sensor exhibits superior sensitivity performance to NO2 under visible light activation. The response value to 5 ppm of NO2 at room temperature is as high as 1800, which is 35 times higher than that of the pure In2O3-based sensor. Additionally, the gas sensor based on the In2O3@ZnO heterostructure demonstrates a significantly reduced response/recovery time of 30 s/67 s compared to the sensor based on pure In2O3 (74 s/235 s). The outstanding gas sensing properties of the In2O3@ZnO heterostructure-based sensors can be attributed to the enhanced photogenerated charge separation efficiency resulting from the heterostructure effect, and the improved receptor function toward NO2, which can increase the reactive sites and gas adsorption capacity. In summary, this work proposes a low-cost and efficient method to synthesize a 1D heterostructure material with microtube structures, which can serve as a fundamental technique for developing high-performance room-temperature gas sensors.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Brain metastases (BMs) are commonly categorized into cystic and solid. However, the difference in the prognosis of patients with either cystic or solid BMs following radiotherapy remains poorly understood. We used a retrospective design to elucidate the disparities in survival between these two patient groups undergoing radiotherapy and to identify factors influencing the overall survival (OS) of patients with BMs. METHODS: This retrospective study encompasses 212 patients diagnosed with BMs. We meticulously analyzed the clinical characteristics, radiation therapy modalities, and risk factors influencing the OS among these patients, categorized by BMs type, post-brain radiation therapy. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference in mOS was observed between the two cohorts (Solid vs Cystic: 23.1 vs 14.6 months). Subgroup analysis unveiled distinctions in mOS, particularly in patients with EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinoma (Solid vs Cystic: 23.1 vs 6.43 months). The volume of BMs and the biological effective dose (BED) emerged as significantly prognostic factors for patients with cystic BMs. For patients with solid BMs, fraction dose, BED, and the number of BMs were identified as independent prognostic factors for survival. CONCLUSION: Brain radiotherapy shows superior survival benefits for lung cancer patients with solid BMs compared to those with cystic BMs, particularly in EGFR-mutant lung cancer. In particular, patients receiving BED ≥60 Gy have a more favorable prognosis than those receiving BED <60 Gy, regardless of the type of BM (solid or cystic) in lung cancer.

ABSTRACT

Metal-based catalytic materials exhibit exceptional properties in degrading emerging pollutants within Fenton-like systems. However, the potential risk of metal leaching has become pressing environmental concern. This study addressed scientific issues pertaining to the leaching behavior and control strategies for metal-based catalytic materials. Innovative cobalt-aluminum hydrotalcite (CoAl-LDH) triggered peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation system was constructed and achieved near-complete removal of Ciprofloxacin (CIP) across diverse water quality environments. Notably, it was found that the tunable ion exchange and Al3+ stabilization of CoAl-LDH occurred due to the particularity of neutral water quality, resulting in significantly lower Co2+ leaching levels (0.321 mg/L) compared to acidic conditions (5.103 mg/L). In light of this, machine learning technology was then employed for the first time to simulate the dynamic trend of Co2+ leaching and elucidated the critical regulatory roles and mechanisms of Al3+, aqueous matrix, and reaction rate. Furthermore, degradation systems based on different water quality and metal leaching levels regulated the generation levels of SO4.- and O2∙-, and the unique advantages of free radical attack paths were clarified through CIP degradation products and ecotoxicity analysis. These findings introduced novel insights and approaches for engineering application and pollution control in metal-based Fenton-like water treatment.
