ABSTRACT

Background: The current application effects of computerized cognitive intervention are inconsistent and limited to hospital rehabilitation settings. Objective: To investigate the effect of mobile intelligent cognitive training (MICT) on patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). Methods: This study was a multicenter, prospective, open-label, blinded endpoint, cluster-randomized controlled trial (RCT). 518 PSCI patients were stratified and assigned to four rehabilitation settings, and then patients were randomized into experimental and control groups in each rehabilitation setting through cluster randomization. All patients received comprehensive management for PSCI, while the experimental group additionally received MICT intervention. Treatment was 30 minutes daily, 5 days per week, for 12 weeks. Cognitive function, activities of daily living (ADL), and quality of life (QOL) were assessed before the treatment, at weeks 6 and 12 post-treatment, and a 16-week follow-up. Results: Linear Mixed Effects Models showed patients with PSCI were better off than pre-treatment patients on each outcome measure (p < 0.05). Additionally, the improvement of these outcomes in the experimental group was significantly better than in the control group at week 6 post-treatment and 16-week follow-up (p < 0.05). The rehabilitation setting also affected the cognitive efficacy of MICT intervention in improving PSCI patients, and the degree of improvement in each outcome was found to be highest in hospital, followed by community, nursing home, and home settings. Conclusions: Long-term MICT intervention can improve cognition, ADL, and QOL in patients with PSCI, with sustained effects for at least one month. Notably, different rehabilitation settings affect the cognitive intervention efficacy of MICT on PSCI patients. However, this still needs to be further determined in future studies.

ABSTRACT

Developing high-performance solvents for extraction and optimizing process technologies is crucial for efficient extractive distillation (ED) separation of azeotrope mixtures. In this paper, computer-aided screening was used to study the ED of azeotrope mixtures in ethyl acetate and ethanol systems using organic solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ionic liquid (IL) ([EMIM][Ac]). The structural relationship between the ILs and the azeotrope mixture was analyzed by σ-profile, molecular surface electrostatic potential, interaction energy, and separation gradient. Subsequently, process simulation was carried out using Aspen Plus software and global optimization was performed with genetic algorithm, which found that both traditional organic solvents and ILs have good separation effects. But considering the high volatility of organic solvents and low saturation vapor pressure of ILs, it is considered to combine them to further explore the cost and carbon emission advantages in extractive distillation separation. Compared with pure organic solvent and pure ILs separation processes, the TAC of the process using an IL-based mixed solvent process decreased by 5.11 and 21.98%, respectively. The carbon emissions of the mixed extractant process were slightly higher than those of the pure organic solvent process, but the addition of ILs made very little volatilization of organic solvents, saving a charge for extractant use. By improving the process, waste heat is effectively recovered, which can save most of the utility engineering costs, and compared with the previous process, the total alkali consumption and carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by 9.43 and 27.17%, respectively. This exploration provides a theoretical reference for the development application and industrial research of ED processes using IL-based mixed solvents.

ABSTRACT

Lithium-rich layer oxide cathodes are promising energy storage materials due to their high energy densities. However, the oxygen loss during cycling limits their practical applications. Here, the essential role of Li content on the topological inhibition of oxygen loss in lithium-rich cathode materials and the relationship between the migration network of oxygen ions and the transition metal (TM) component are revealed. Utilizing first-principles calculations in combination with percolation theory and Monte Carlo simulations, it is found that TM ions can effectively encage the oxidized oxygen species when the TM concentration in TM layer exceeds 5/6, which hinders the formation of a percolating oxygen migration network. This study demonstrates the significance of rational compositional design in lithium-rich cathodes for effectively suppressing irreversible oxygen release and enhancing cathode cycling performance.

ABSTRACT

DTaP-HBV-IPV-Hib hexavalent vaccine has been used in high-income countries for many years to prevent diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis, and invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b disease. Currently, no hexavalent vaccines have been approved for use in China. Evidence of parental acceptance and interest in hexavalent vaccines can help policy makers and manufacturers make decisions about entering the vaccine market and the immunization program in China. We measured parental acceptance and willingness-to-pay (WTP) for a hexavalent vaccine to provide such evidence. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of children's caregivers in 16 vaccination clinics in seven cities in China and obtained information on socio-demographics, knowledge of disease, confidence in vaccines, previous vaccination experience, and acceptance of and WTP for hexavalent vaccine. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine factors influencing acceptance, and multivariate tobit regression was used to identify factors impacting WTP. Between April 28 and June 30, 2023, a total of 581 parents of children aged 0-6 years participated in the survey; 435 (74.87%, 95% CI:71.3%-78.4%) parents indicated acceptance of hexavalent vaccine. Residence location, parents' education level, experience paying for vaccination, and disease knowledge scores were key factors affecting parents' choices for vaccination. Mean (SD) and median (IQR) willingness to pay for full 4-dose course vaccination were 2266.66 (1177.1) CNY and 2400 (1600-2800) CNY. Children's age (p < .001), parents' education level (p = .024), and perceived price barriers (p < .001) were significantly associated with WTP. Parents have high acceptance and willingness to pay for hexavalent vaccine. The less money parents have to pay out of pocket, the more willing they can be to accept the vaccine. Therefore, acceptance may increase even further if the vaccine is covered by medical insurance, provided free of charge by the government, or if its price is reduced. Our results provide reference for optimizing and adjusting immunization strategies in China.

BACKGROUND: China has been working towards measles elimination, but in 2017, measles outbreaks occurred in Ganzi and Aba prefectures of Sichuan province, representing 95% of all provincial cases and jeopardizing measles elimination. METHODS: During March and April 2017, high-performing prefectures were paired with outbreak and other interested counties to jointly conduct a measles-rubella (MR) catch-up campaign, build population immunity, and strengthen the counties' programs. RESULTS: House-to-house search identified 88,383 children in Ganzi that lacked MCV vaccination; 85,144 (96.34%) were vaccinated. Search identified 33,683 children in Aba who were not vaccinated against measles; 33,074 (98.19%) were vaccinated. The supporting prefectures helped install Immunization Information Systems and enroll unvaccinated children into the immunization program.The outbreak ended within a month and incidence has remained low for the subsequent six years. CONCLUSION: A paired catch-up campaign represents an effective model of using measles elimination strategies to strengthen local immunization programs for long-term program effectiveness.

Background: The mechanism(s) of cognitive impairment remains complex, making it difficult to confirm the factors influencing poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). Objective: This study quantitatively investigated the degree of influence and interactions of clinical indicators of PSCI. Methods: Information from 270 patients with PSCI and their Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-RC) scores, totaling 18 indicators, were retrospectively collected. Correlations between the indicators and WAIS scores were calculated. Multiple linear regression model(MLR), genetic algorithm modified Back-Propagation neural network(GA-BP), logistic regression model (LR), XGBoost model (XGB), and structural equation model were used to analyze the degree of influence of factors on the WAIS and their mediating effects. Results: Seven indicators were significantly correlated with the WAIS scores: education, lesion side, aphasia, frontal lobe, temporal lobe, diffuse lesions, and disease course. The MLR showed significant effect of education, lesion side, aphasia, diffuse lesions, and frontal lobe on the WAIS. The GA-BP included five factors: education, aphasia, frontal lobe, temporal lobe, and diffuse lesions. LR predicted that the lesion side contributed more to mild cognitive impairment, while education, lesion side, aphasia, and course of the disease contributed more to severe cognitive impairment. XGB showed that education, side of the lesion, aphasia, and diffuse lesions contributed the most to PSCI. Aphasia plays a significant mediating role in patients with severe PSCI. Conclusions: Education, lesion side, aphasia, frontal lobe, and diffuse lesions significantly affected PSCI. Aphasia is a mediating variable between clinical information and the WAIS in patients with severe PSCI.

ABSTRACT

Pro-inflammatory response impairs the constructive repair of abdominal wall defects after mesh implantation. Electrospinning-aid functionalization has the potential to improve the highly orchestrated response by attenuating the over-activation of foreign body reactions. Herein, we combined poly(L-lactic acid-co-caprolactone) (PLLA-CL) with gelatin proportionally via electrospinning, with Ibuprofen (IBU) incorporation to fabricate a bilayer mesh for the repair improvement. The PLLA-CL/gelatin/IBU (PGI) mesh was characterized in vitro and implanted into the rat model with a full-thickness defect for a comprehensive evaluation in comparison to the PLLA-CL/gelatin (PG) and off-the-shelf small intestinal submucosa (SIS) meshes. The bilayer PGI mesh presented a sustained release of IBU over 21 days with degradation in vitro and developed less-intensive intraperitoneal adhesion along with a histologically weaker inflammatory response than the PG mesh after 28 days. It elicited an M2 macrophage-dominant foreign body reaction within the process, leading to a pro-remodeling response similar to the biological SIS mesh, which was superior to the PG mesh. The PGI mesh provided preponderant mechanical supports over the SIS mesh and the native abdominal wall with similar compliance. Collectively, the newly developed mesh advances the intraperitoneal applicability of electrospun meshes by guiding a pro-remodeling response and offers a feasible functionalization approach upon immunomodulation.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary molar distalization is a common technique used in the non-extraction treatment of Angle Class II malocclusion that can effectively correct the molar relationship and create spaces for anterior teeth alignment. However, this approach may also impact the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) due to predictable changes in the posterior vertical dimension. Despite its widespread use, Class II malocclusions correction by molar distalization with clear aligners has not been investigated for their effects on the TMJ. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the impact of sequential molar distalization using clear aligners on the TMJ. METHODS: Three-dimensional CBCT scans of 23 non-growing patients (7 males, 16 females; mean age 29.8 ± 4.6 years) with skeletal class I or II malocclusion and a bilateral molar class II relationship treated by sequential upper molars distalization with orthodontic clear aligners (Invisalign, Align Technology, San Josè, Ca, USA). A total of 46 joints were examined before and after molar distalization using Anatomage InvivoDental 6.0.3. Linear and angular measurements of the mandibular joint were measured, including joint parameters, inclination, position, and the dimension of the condyle and articular fossa. In addition, 3D volumetric spaces of the joint were analyzed. All data were statistically analyzed by paired T test to determine the differences between the pre-and post-orthodontic procedures. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were found in all primary effects resulting from maxillary molars distalization by clear aligners on TMJ components measurements and joint spaces between T0 and T1. Meanwhile, statistically significant differences were observed in the linear position of the upper molars and the molar relationship parameter with at least P ≤ 0.05. CONCLUSION: Treatment by sequential upper molars distalization with clear aligners does not lead to significant TMJ parameters changes in condyle and fossa spaces, dimensions, and positions.

ABSTRACT

Nanozymes are a class of nanomaterials that can specifically mimic the structures and catalytic activities as well as overcome limitations of natural enzymes and have hence been considered as a competitive alternative to natural enzymes. At present, plenty of nanozymes, especially those with peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity, have been extensively explored for biosensing. In this work, we proposed polyoxometalate-based heterojunction GdP5W30O110@WS2 nanoclusters (NCs) to exert intrinsic POD-like catalytic activity even under harsh catalytic conditions. Detailedly, GdP5W30O110@WS2 NCs possessing conducive POD-like catalytic activity can oxidize chromogenic substrates into colored substances in the presence of H2O2. On the strength of the POD-like catalytic activity of GdP5W30O110@WS2 NCs, a reliable analytical platform is then constructed after the optimization of catalytic conditions for the detection of H2O2, glutathione (GSH) and glucose via a simple TMB colorimetric strategy. This work advances the utilization of versatile polyoxometalate-based nanomaterials for biosensing, dramatically broadening the potential applications of other nanozyme-based biosensors.

ABSTRACT

Compared to fixed orthodontic appliances with brackets, thermoplastic invisible orthodontic aligners offer several advantages, such as high aesthetic performance, good comfort, and convenient oral health maintenance, and are widely used in orthodontic fields. However, prolonged use of thermoplastic invisible aligners may lead to demineralization and even caries in most patients' teeth, as they enclose the tooth surface for an extended period. To address this issue, we have created PETG composites that contain piezoelectric barium titanate nanoparticles (BaTiO3NPs) to obtain antibacterial properties. First, we prepared piezoelectric composites by incorporating varying amounts of BaTiO3NPs into PETG matrix material. The composites were then characterized using techniques such as SEM, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy, which confirmed the successful synthesis of the composites. We cultivated biofilms of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) on the surface of the nanocomposites under both polarized and unpolarized conditions. We then activated piezoelectric charges by subjecting the nanocomposites to 10 Hz cyclic mechanical vibration. The interactions between the biofilms and materials were evaluated by measuring the biofilm biomass. The addition of piezoelectric nanoparticles had a noticeable antibacterial effect on both the unpolarized and polarized conditions. Under polarized conditions, nanocomposites demonstrated a greater antibacterial effect than under unpolarized conditions. Additionally, as the concentration of BaTiO3NPs increased, the antibacterial rate also increased, with the surface antibacterial rate reaching 67.39% (30 wt% BaTiO3NPs). These findings have the potential for application in wearable, invisible appliances to improve clinical services and reduce the need for cleaning methods.

ABSTRACT

Background: Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is a significant health concern. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is considered a promising rehabilitation therapy for improving cognition, and the effects of excitatory TMS on PSCI have received much attention in recent years. However, the effects of different cerebral hemispheres on excitatory TMS treatment of cognitive impairment have not been studied. This review aimed to study the effects of excitatory TMS over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of different cerebral hemispheres on the cognitive function of patients with PSCI. Methods: Literature published in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Wiley from inception to September 30, 2022, were searched. Two researchers independently performed literature screening, data extraction, and quality assessment. Furthermore, we conducted a meta-analysis using RevMan software (version 5.4) and rated the strength of evidence using GRADEpro. Results: A total of 19 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that excitatory TMS over the left hemisphere DLPFC was significantly better in improving global cognition (SMD = 2.26, 95% CI 1.67-2.86, P < 0.00001; vs. SMD = 2.53, 95% CI 1.86-3.20, P < 0.00001), memory (SMD = 1.29, 95% CI 0.72-1.87, P < 0.0001), attention (SMD = 2.32, 95% CI 1.64-3.01, P < 0.00001), executive (SMD = 0.64, 95% CI 0.21-1.07, P = 0.004), P300 latency (SMD = 2.69, 95% CI 2.13-3.25, P < 0.00001), and depression (SMD = 0.95, 95% CI 0.26-1.63, P = 0.007) than that of the control group, but the effect on improving activities of daily living (ADL) was unclear (P = 0.03 vs. P = 0.17). Subgroup analysis further showed that excitatory TMS over the right hemisphere DLPFC was effective in improving the global cognition of PSCI patients (P < 0.00001), but the stimulation effect over the ipsilateral hemisphere DLPFC was unclear (P = 0.11 vs. P = 0.003). Additionally, excitatory TMS over the ipsilateral hemisphere DLPFC showed no statistical difference in improving ADL between the two groups (P = 0.25). Conclusions: Compared to other hemispheric sides, excitatory TMS over the left hemisphere DLPFC was a more effective stimulation area, which can significantly improved the global cognitive function, memory, attention, executive, P300 latency, and depression in patients with PSCI. There was no apparent therapeutic effect on improving activities of daily living (ADL). In the future, more randomized controlled trials with large-sample, high quality, and follow-up are necessary to explore a usable protocol further. ABSTRACT

Proper endothelialization and limited collagen deposition on the luminal surface after graft implantation plays a crucial role to prevent the occurrence of stenosis. To achieve these conditions, a biodegradable graft with adequate mechanical properties and the ability to sequentially deliver therapeutic agents isfabricated. In this study, a dual-release system is constructed through coaxial electrospinning by incorporating recombinant human vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and transforming growth factor ß1 (TGF-ß1) inhibitor into silk fibroin (SF) nanofibers to form a bioactive membrane. The functionalized SF membrane as the inner layer of the graft is characterized by the release profile, cell proliferation and protein expression. It presents excellent biocompatibility and biodegradation, facilitating cell attachment, proliferation, and infiltration. The core-shell structure enables rapid VEGF release within 10 days and sustained plasmid delivery for 21 days. A 2.0-mm-diameter vascular graft is fabricated by integrating the SF membrane with decellularized porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS), aiming to facilitate the integration process under a stable extracellular matrix structure. The bioengineered graft is functionalized with the sequential administration of VEGF and TGF-ß1, and with the reinforced and compatible mechanical properties, thereby offers an orchestrated solution for stenosis with potential for in situ vascular tissue engineering applications.

ABSTRACT

Transcriptional changes in Rett syndrome (RTT) are assumed to directly correlate with steady-state mRNA levels, but limited evidence in mice suggests that changes in transcription can be compensated by post-transcriptional regulation. We measure transcription rate and mRNA half-life changes in RTT patient neurons using RATEseq, and re-interpret nuclear and whole-cell RNAseq from Mecp2 mice. Genes are dysregulated by changing transcription rate or half-life and are buffered when both change. We utilized classifier models to predict the direction of transcription rate changes and find that combined frequencies of three dinucleotides are better predictors than CA and CG. MicroRNA and RNA-binding Protein (RBP) motifs are enriched in 3'UTRs of genes with half-life changes. Nuclear RBP motifs are enriched on buffered genes with increased transcription rate. We identify post-transcriptional mechanisms in humans and mice that alter half-life or buffer transcription rate changes when a transcriptional modulator gene is mutated in a neurodevelopmental disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of postoperative femoral neck shortening in patients with femoral neck fractures fixed with femoral neck system screws (FNS) and to explore the factors influencing femoral neck shortening. METHOD: To retrospectively analyze the data of 113 patients with femoral neck fractures admitted to the Second Hospital of Fuzhou City, affiliated with Xiamen University, between December 2019 and January 2022. Of these, 87 patients were followed up for more than 12 months, 49 men and 38 women: 36 cases of Garden I and II fractures and 51 cases of Garden III and IV fractures, to record the patient's hip Harris score at 12 months postoperatively. Patients were divided into femoral neck shortening group and femoral neck no shortening group according to their regular postoperative follow-up radiographic measurements. To count the incidence of femoral neck shortening, a comparison of postoperative complication rates and hip Harris scores between the two groups was made. Statistical comparison of the two groups and a multifactorial logistic regression analysis were also performed to analyze the factors affecting femoral neck shortening. RESULTS: All 87 patients were followed up for more than 12 months after surgery. In 34 of these cases, neck shortening occurred, and the incidence rate was 39.1%. 15 cases of severe shortening, incidence of 17.2%; fracture healing 84 cases, fracture healing rate of 96.5%. The hip Harris score was 83.99 (81.95, 89.20) in the neck shortening group at 12 months postoperatively, 90.87 (87.95, 94.80) for the group without neck shortening; the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.01). 32 cases of fracture healing in the neck shortening group at 12 months after surgery, fracture healing rate of 94.1%; 52 cases healed without neck shortening group, fracture healing rate of 98.1%. The difference between the two groups was not statistically significant (P = 0.337). High incidence of neck shortening after FNS fixation of femoral neck fractures, cortical comminution of the severed end, fracture fractionation and quality of reduction were significantly correlated with neck shortening. CONCLUSION: High incidence of postoperative neck shortening after internal fixation of femoral neck fractures with the femoral neck system, the cortical comminution, the type of fracture, and the quality of fracture reduction are the influencing factors; femoral neck shortening can affect postoperative hip function, but does not affect fracture healing.

ABSTRACT

The contribution of mRNA half-life is commonly overlooked when examining changes in mRNA abundance during development. mRNA levels of some genes are regulated by transcription rate only, but others may be regulated by mRNA half-life only shifts. Furthermore, transcriptional buffering is predicted when changes in transcription rates have compensating shifts in mRNA half-life resulting in no change to steady-state levels. Likewise, transcriptional boosting should result when changes in transcription rate are accompanied by amplifying half-life shifts. During neurodevelopment there is widespread 3'UTR lengthening that could be shaped by differential shifts in the stability of existing short or long 3'UTR transcript isoforms. We measured transcription rate and mRNA half-life changes during induced human Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC)-derived neuronal development using RATE-seq. During transitions to progenitor and neuron stages, transcriptional buffering occurred in up to 50%, and transcriptional boosting in up to 15%, of genes with changed transcription rates. The remaining changes occurred by transcription rate only or mRNA half-life only shifts. Average mRNA half-life decreased two-fold in neurons relative to iPSCs. Short gene isoforms were more destabilized in neurons and thereby increased the average 3'UTR length. Small RNA sequencing captured an increase in microRNA copy number per cell during neurodevelopment. We propose that mRNA destabilization and 3'UTR lengthening are driven in part by an increase in microRNA load in neurons. Our findings identify mRNA stability mechanisms in human neurodevelopment that regulate gene and isoform level abundance and provide a precedent for similar post-transcriptional regulatory events as other tissues develop.

ABSTRACT

Achieving the "double carbon" goal is a major task and challenge facing China. The emission reduction actions in typical urban agglomerations are of great significance. Based on the consideration of the impact of regional coordinated development, this study analyzed influencing factors and conducted prediction of carbon emissions from terminal energy consumption in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. Firstly, the factors affecting carbon emissions were screened through the STIRPAT model. Then, the paper designs different scenarios and finally uses the genetic algorithm extreme learning machine (GA-ELM) algorithm to predict the carbon emissions of the BTH region, with and without considering the impact of the coordinated development strategy. The research shows that the increase in energy intensity and the improvement of energy consumption structure have the largest promotion effect on carbon emission reduction. At the same time, the significant role of the coordinated development strategy in promoting regional carbon emission reduction was verified. Therefore, the BTH region should adhere to the path of coordinated development, innovate low-carbon technology, and deepen the concept of green consumption to promote the realization of regional carbon emission reduction goals.

ABSTRACT

The cathode materials work as the host framework for both Li+ diffusion and electron transport in Li-ion batteries. The Li+ diffusion property is always the research focus, while the electron transport property is less studied. Herein, we propose a unique strategy to elevate the rate performance through promoting the surface electric conductivity. Specifically, a disordered rock-salt phase was coherently constructed at the surface of LiCoO2 , promoting the surface electric conductivity by over one magnitude. It increased the effective voltage (Veff ) imposed in the bulk, thus driving more Li+ extraction/insertion and making LiCoO2 exhibit superior rate capability (154 mAh g-1 at 10 C), and excellent cycling performance (93 % after 1000 cycles at 10 C). The universality of this strategy was confirmed by another surface design and a simulation. Our findings provide a new angle for developing high-rate cathode materials by tuning the surface electron transport property.

ABSTRACT

Importance: The Sabin-strain inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) may be a tool for polio outbreak response in certain situations. Objective: To investigate the response to a type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV2) outbreak. Design, Setting, and Participants: This case series was conducted in China after a VDPV2 was detected in stool specimens from a child with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) in Sichuan Province in 2019, 3 years after the global withdrawal of live, attenuated type 2 oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV). Investigation followed National Health Commission and World Health Organization guidance and included searching hospitals for unreported AFP cases; testing stool specimens from the child, his contacts, and local children; enhanced environmental surveillance for VDPV2s in wastewater; and measuring vaccination coverage. Sabin-strain IPV campaigns were conducted in a wide geographic area. Main Outcomes and Measures: Any VDPV2 detection after completion of the supplementary immunization activities. Results: A 28-nucleotide-change VDPV2 was isolated from a young boy. Three VDPV2s were detected in healthy children; 2 were contacts of the original child, and none had paralysis. A search of 31 million hospital records found 10 unreported AFP cases; none were polio. No type 2 polioviruses were found in wastewater. Prior to the event, polio vaccine coverage was 65% among children younger than 5 years. Sabin-strain IPV campaigns reached more than 97% of targeted children, administering 1.4 million doses. No transmission source was identified. More than 1 year of enhanced poliovirus environmental and AFP surveillance detected no additional VDPVs. Conclusions and Relevance: These findings suggest that the circulating VPDV2 outbreak in 2019 was associated with low vaccine coverage. An investigation discovered 3 infected but otherwise healthy children and no evidence of the virus in wastewater. Following Sabin-strain IPV-only campaigns expanding from county to prefecture, the poliovirus was not detected, and the outbreak response was considered by an expert panel and the World Health Organization to have been successful. This success suggests that the Sabin-strain IPV may be a useful tool for responding to circulating VDPV2 outbreaks when high-quality supplementary immunization activities can be conducted and carefully monitored in settings with good sanitation.

INTRODUCTION: Although the advantages of laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair in the general population have been reported, its role in octogenarians has yet to be elucidated. This retrospective study was designed to compare the outcomes of open and laparoscopic inguinal hernia repairs in octogenarians. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data of octogenarians who underwent laparoscopic (n = 81) or open (n = 121) inguinal hernia repair were collected from January 2017 to December 2019. Statistical analysis variables included basic epidemiological data of patients, surgical procedures, comorbidities, postoperative pain, complications, recurrence, and other data. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of sex, body mass index, recurrent hernias, comorbidities, postoperative complications, and recurrence. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class and the proportion of scrotal hernias in the open group were higher than those of the laparoscopic group, whereas the proportion of bilateral hernias in the laparoscopic group was higher than that in the open group. The postoperative pain scores of the laparoscopic group were lower than those of the open group. CONCLUSIONS: In octogenarians, both laparoscopic and open inguinal hernia repairs are safe and feasible, but an appropriate surgical plan is crucial for obtaining better treatment effect.
