ABSTRACT

We assessed the possibilities of correction of oxidative stress parameters in the serum and gastroduodenal mucosa using electromagnetic radiation in a millimeter wavelength range in 127 patients with gastric and duodenal ulcer after eradication therapy. Control group included 230 healthy subjects. Parameter of lipid oxidation by free radicals were measured by direct methods (hemiluminescence and EPR-spectroscopy). The results show that standard eradication therapy does not influence parameters of oxidative stress. More pronounced effect of electromagnetic radiation in a millimeter wavelength range may be due to the correction of prooxidant-antioxidant and antioxidant disbalance. This observation provides pathogenetic substantiation for the inclusion of this physical method in modern therapeutic modalities.

ABSTRACT

The authors consider the molecular mechanisms of cytolysis, the leading pathomorphological syndrome of chronic diffuse hepatic diseases (CDHD), in the context of the relationship of bioradical homeostasis and hydration. A hundred and thirty five males, including 40 patients with CDHD and 95 donors were examined. It has been established that there is a reduction in the activity of alanine aminotransferase and an increase in the de Ritis coefficient over 1.05 and in bioradical homeostatic imbalance due to the less total antioxidative activity below 33% of the normal value, as well as a decrease in the hydration coefficient below 66% of the normal value due to the elevated amount of free water and to the lower amount of bound water. The findings permit one to monitor the course of CDHD and the treatment of patients and to predetermine the use of synthetic antiradical agents to abolish cytolysis.

ABSTRACT

The state of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defence was investigated in sera of 66 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 50 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and in 235 healthy donors using the method of chemiluminescence and EPR-spectroscopy. The results indicate involvement of free radical oxidation in pathogenesis of RA and SLE. Peroxide and antioxidant imbalance was more pronounced in RA than in SLE.

ABSTRACT

To study prognostic value of chemiluminescent (CL) test of duodenal ulcer treatment efficacy with microwave resonance therapy (MWRT), 39 duodenal ulcer patients were divided into two groups differing only by the size of ulcer defect. In 23 patients of the first group scarring occurred after 10 MWRT procedures. In 16 patients of the second group scarring of the ulcer occurred after 10-20 procedures. By the level of lipid hydroperoxides and antioxidant activity it was found that rapid healing of ulcer is accompanied with a positive change in the total antioxidant activity whereas slow healing in MWRT occurs in reduced total antioxidant potential and seems to depend on the size of ulcer defect.

ABSTRACT

Two randomized groups of ulcer patients were compared. 102 patients of group 1 were treated with synthetic antioxidants (dibunol, probucol, emoxipine), while 100 patients of group 2 received a conventional treatment. Treatment results in group 1 appeared better: shortening of ulcer scarring, higher percentage of ulcer healing for 2 and 4 weeks, fall in the number of relapses during the first year of the follow-up, improvement in lipid peroxidation and antioxidant activity.

ABSTRACT

Dibunol, antioxidant drug, made in Russia was given to 42 patients aged 18-59 with unhealing ulcer 0.64 c 0.06 cm in diameter treated previously without effect for 99.74 +/- 30.6 days. Scarring came in 99.6% of cases on treatment day 15.9 +/- 1.23 without appearance of a rough scar. Recurrences occurred 6 months later in 7.1% of patients. Dibunol did not suppress antioxidant system of the serum, lowered serum level of lipid hydroperoxides, stimulated activity of natural antioxidants in the mucous gastroduodenal zone, had no effect on hormonal homeostasis and blood coagulation.

ABSTRACT

The blood serum ceruloplasmin, transferrin, malonic dialdehyde, iron and copper levels have been measured in donors. These parameters varied in groups of subjects aged 20-29 and 30-45, no age-associated differences being recorded within both the groups. Certain differences have been revealed between the donors who furnished their blood more or less than 3 times a year. The results of this investigation may be useful in clinical screenings of donors.
