ABSTRACT

The transbronchial interventional surgery presents challenges with winding and convoluted pathways, prone to compression and friction. Current autonomous planning struggles to reach deeper bronchial positions, and hard to consider multiple conflicting goals simultaneously. This article introduces an innovative planning scheme with preference weights to achieve smooth, frictionless, and collision-free autonomous transbronchial intervention with continuum robot (CR). A few-human-interaction twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (FHITD3) generated from surgeon preference guidance is proposed, which determines the optimal strategy for the motion of CR. Preference knowledge is generated through interaction between human and few diversity samples. An abstract actuator space description is proposed for the posture and position representation of CR during movement within bronchus. A contact motion analysis strategy is proposed to calculate real-time attitude of CR in contact with bronchus. In addition, an oscillation suppression approach to address CR's unsmooth distal end trajectory is proposed. Simulated experiments show that the CR autonomously completes intervention tasks with a smooth and stable trajectory, reducing distal end oscillation by over 45%. It achieves a target endpoint within the fourth level bronchus (approximately 5 mm diameter) with over 90% probability.

ABSTRACT

Acquired bronchobiliary fistula (ABBF) is very rare among the complications that occur in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after treatment. Although surgery and drainage have been the main methods for treating ABBF for a long time, they are not entirely suitable for patients with refractory ABBF resulting from HCC therapy. In this study, we present four cases of ABBF caused by HCC treatment, who were treated using selective bronchial occlusion (SBO). Among the 4 patients with ABBF treated with SBO, 3 cases successfully blocked ABBF with SBO, and the treatment success rate was 75%. All successfully treated patients reported disappearance of symptoms of bilioptysis and cough was alleviated. No life-threatening adverse reactions were reported following SBO intervention, and no deaths occurred. We believe that the use of video bronchoscopy to place a self-made silicone plug in the bronchus to treat refractory ABBF is a feasible palliative treatment, which can significantly improve the condition of ABBF patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Genotypes (G) 1, 3, and 5 of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) have been isolated in China, but the dominant genotype circulating in Chinese coastal areas remains unknown. We searched for G5 JEV-infected cases and attempted to elucidate which JEV genotype was most closely related to human Japanese encephalitis (JE) in the coastal provinces of China. Methods: In this study, we collected serum specimens from patients with JE in three coastal provinces of China (Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Shandong) from 2018 to 2020 and conducted JEV cross-neutralization tests against G1, G3, and G5. Results: Acute serum specimens from clinically reported JE cases were obtained for laboratory confirmation from hospitals in Shandong (92 patients), Zhejiang (192 patients), and Guangdong (77 patients), China, from 2018 to 2020. Seventy of the 361 serum specimens were laboratory-confirmed to be infected with JEV. Two cases were confirmed to be infected with G1 JEV, 32 with G3 JEV, and two with G5 JEV. Conclusion: G3 was the primary infection genotype among JE cases with a definite infection genotype, and the infection caused by G5 JEV was confirmed serologically in China.

ABSTRACT

Arrowroot starch (AS)-based films potential is influenced by its low-cost processing and high transparency packaging material but low tensile strength; hence, AS was blended with kappa-carrageenan (KC) to improve mechanical properties of AS-based films and enhance its potential use in food packaging or coating applications. AS-KC-based films were characterized based on structural, physicomechanical, thermal, pasting properties, and coating application in sweet cherry. The films demonstrated high tensile strength from 3.2 to 29.4 MPa and low elongation properties from 160.3 % to 1.9 %. Moreover, AS/KC films exhibited peak viscosities of 18.7 to 34.8 RVU, and thermal analysis depicted lower weight losses (59-45 %) compared to AS-based films (62 %). In addition, sweet cherry samples coated with AS/KC films and stored at 20 °C for 15 days depicted lower weight losses (26.6 %) compared to non-coated samples (>41 %), which indicated the potential use of the film's coating application in extending the shelf life and quality of fresh fruits.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is one of the common symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have been studied separately in the treatment of cognitive dysfunction in MDD patients. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of rTMS combined with tDCS as a new therapy to improve neurocognitive impairment in MDD patients. METHODS: In this brief 2-week, double-blind, randomized, and sham-controlled trial, a total of 550 patients were screened, and 240 MDD inpatients were randomized into four groups (active rTMS + active tDCS, active rTMS + sham tDCS, sham rTMS + active tDCS, sham rTMS + sham tDCS). Finally, 203 patients completed the study and received 10 treatment sessions over a 2-week period. The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was performed to assess patients' cognitive function at baseline and week 2. Also, we applied the 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-24) to assess patients' depressive symptoms at baseline and week 2. RESULTS: After 10 sessions of treatment, the rTMS combined with the tDCS group showed more significant improvements in the RBANS total score, immediate memory, and visuospatial/constructional index score (all p < 0.05). Moreover, post hoc tests revealed a significant increase in the RBANS total score and Visuospatial/Constructional in the combined treatment group compared to the other three groups but in the immediate memory, the combined treatment group only showed a better improvement than the sham group. The results also showed the RBANS total score increased significantly higher in the active rTMS group compared with the sham group. However, rTMS or tDCS alone was not superior to the sham group in terms of other cognitive performance. In addition, the rTMS combined with the tDCS group showed a greater reduction in HDRS-24 total score and a better depression response rate than the other three groups. CONCLUSIONS: rTMS combined with tDCS treatment is more effective than any single intervention in treating cognitive dysfunction and depressive symptoms in MDD patients. ABSTRACT

Objective: Viral encephalitis is an infectious disease severely affecting human health. It is caused by a wide variety of viral pathogens, including herpes viruses, flaviviruses, enteroviruses, and other viruses. The laboratory diagnosis of viral encephalitis is a worldwide challenge. Recently, high-throughput sequencing technology has provided new tools for diagnosing central nervous system infections. Thus, In this study, we established a multipathogen detection platform for viral encephalitis based on amplicon sequencing. Methods: We designed nine pairs of specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers for the 12 viruses by reviewing the relevant literature. The detection ability of the primers was verified by software simulation and the detection of known positive samples. Amplicon sequencing was used to validate the samples, and consistency was compared with Sanger sequencing. Results: The results showed that the target sequences of various pathogens were obtained at a coverage depth level greater than 20×, and the sequence lengths were consistent with the sizes of the predicted amplicons. The sequences were verified using the National Center for Biotechnology Information BLAST, and all results were consistent with the results of Sanger sequencing. Conclusion: Amplicon-based high-throughput sequencing technology is feasible as a supplementary method for the pathogenic detection of viral encephalitis. It is also a useful tool for the high-volume screening of clinical samples.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of argatroban on the levels of Hcy, hs-CRP and FIB in patients with acute cerebral infarction (ACI). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 382 patients with ACI who were hospitalized in the Department of Neurology of our hospital from January 2017 to December 2019. Among them, 158 patients received conventional treatment as the control group and 224 patients received combined treatment with argatroban as the study group. NHISS score, mRS score, Hcy, hs-CRP, FIB level, quality of life, adverse reactions were compared between the two groups after treatment. The levels of Hcy and hs-CRP in patients with different mRS scores were compared. RESULTS: A superior clinical efficacy of the study group was observed than the control group (p < 0.05). The study group witnessed a remarkably lower NHISS score, Hcy, hs-CRP and FIB level as compare to the control group (p < 0.05). The ADL and FMA scores in the study group were higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05). The levels of Hcy and hs-CRP in mRS 0-2 patients were lower than those in mRS 3-6 patients (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Argatroban in ACI patients can significantly enhance the clinical efficacy and improve the quality of life. It is closely related to the reduction of Hcy and hs-CRP levels, but the mechanism needs to be further studied.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between types of disc displacement (DD) diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the risk (presence or absence) and severity of condylar erosion (CE) graded using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in adult Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients. METHODS: A total of 353 TMD patients (283 females, 70 males) underwent MRI scans to categorise DD as normal (NA), anterior displacement with reduction (ADDR), or anterior displacement without reduction (ADDNR). CE severity was graded on a scale of 0-3 (absence, mild, moderate or severe) using CBCT. To establish the plausibility and cut-off points for CE diagnosis, the severity of CE was then further divided into three classifications: Grade 0 versus 1 + 2 + 3; Grades 0 + 1 versus 2 + 3; Grades 0 + 1 + 2 versus 3. Logistic regression analysis was performed, adjusting for age, gender and joint correlation. RESULTS: ADDNR significantly increased the risk of CE compared with NA (OR = 10.04, 95% CI: [6.41, 15.73]) and showed a significant increase in CE severity across all classifications (ORs = 10.04-18.95). The effects of ADDNR were significant in both genders (p < .001) and had a greater impact in females. ADDR was predominantly associated with mild CE. CONCLUSIONS: ADDNR significantly increased the risk and severity of CE independent of gender when compared to NA, whereas ADDR was mainly associated with mild CE. Slight cortical discontinuity may represent a subclinical diagnosis requiring further investigation.

ABSTRACT

A prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) facility utilizing 252Cf source has been developed for in situ analysis of copper samples. Monte Carlo simulation is employed to determine optimal sizes for neutron moderator, gamma-ray shielding material, and thermal neutron absorber. Subsequently, based on the parameters optimized by MCNP, the PGNAA facility was constructed. Five sets of experimental samples containing low-grade copper concentration of 0 %, 0.5 %, 1 %, 1.5 % and 2 % are measured with the PGNAA facility. The results show that the minimum detectable concentration of copper is 0.218 %. The maximum relative deviation of copper is 8.53 %.

ABSTRACT

Beyond its well-established role in diabetes management, metformin has gained attention as a promising therapeutic for inflammation-related diseases, largely due to its antioxidant capabilities. However, the mechanistic underpinnings of this effect remain elusive. Using in vivo zebrafish models of inflammation, we explored the impact of metformin on neutrophil recruitment and the underlying mechanisms involved. Our data indicate that metformin reduces histone (H3K18) lactylation, leading to the decreased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a muted neutrophil response to both caudal fin injury and otic vesicle inflammation. To investigate the precise mechanisms through which metformin modulates neutrophil migration via ROS and H3K18 lactylation, we meticulously established the correlation between metformin-induced suppression of H3K18 lactylation and ROS levels. Through supplementary experiments involving the restoration of lactate and ROS, our findings demonstrated that elevated levels of both lactate and ROS significantly promoted the inflammatory response in zebrafish. Collectively, our study illuminates previously unexplored avenues of metformin's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions through the downregulation of H3K18 lactylation and ROS production, highlighting the crucial role of epigenetic regulation in inflammation and pointing to metformin's potential in treating inflammation-associated conditions.

ABSTRACT

Recently, some inhibitors of soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) showed limited potential in treating sepsis by increasing survival time, but they have unfortunately failed to improve survival rates. In this study, we initially identified a new hit 11D, belonging to a natural skeleton known as stilbene and having an IC50 of 644 nM on inhibiting murine sEH. Natural scaffold-based sEH inhibitors are paid less attention. A combination of structure-activity relationships (SARs)-guided structural optimization and computer-aided skeleton growth led to a highly effective lead compound 70P (IC50: 4.0 nM). The dose-response study indicated that 70P (at doses of 0.5-5 mg/kg, ip.) significantly increased survival rates and survival time by reducing the levels of the inflammatory factors TNF-α and IL-6 in the liver. Interestingly, 70P exhibited much higher accumulation in the liver than in plasma (AUC ratio: 175). In addition, 70P exhibits equal IC50 value (1.5 nM) on inhibiting human sEH as EC5026 (1.7 nM). In conclusion, the natural scaffold-extended sEH inhibitor 70P has the potential to become a new promising lead for addressing the unmet medical need in sepsis treatment, which highlighted the importance of natural skeleton in developing sEH inhibitors.

ABSTRACT

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive brain cancer with a poor prognosis. Therefore, the correlative molecular markers and molecular mechanisms should be explored to assess the occurrence and treatment of glioma.WB and qPCR assays were used to detect the expression of CXCL5 in human GBM tissues. The relationship between CXCL5 expression and clinicopathological features was evaluated using logistic regression analysis, Wilcoxon symbolic rank test, and Kruskal-Wallis test. Univariate, multivariate Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier methods were used to assess CXCL5 and other prognostic factors of GBM. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was used to identify pathways associated with CXCL5. The correlation between CXCL5 and tumor immunoinfiltration was investigated using single sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) of TCGA data. Cell experiments and mouse subcutaneous transplanted tumor models were used to evaluate the role of CXCL5 in GBM. WB, qPCR, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemical assays showed that CXCL5 expression was increased in human GBM tissues. Furthermore, high CXCL5 expression was closely related to poor disease-specific survival and overall survival of GBM patients. The ssGSEA suggested that CXCL5 is closely related to the cell cycle and immune response through PPAR signaling pathway. GSEA also showed that CXCL5 expression was positively correlated with macrophage cell infiltration level and negatively correlated with cytotoxic cell infiltration level. CXCL5 may be associated with the prognosis and immunoinfiltration of GBM.

ABSTRACT

Scavenger receptors (SRs) are pattern recognition receptors involved in the innate immune defense against pathogen infection in fish. However, there has not been much research done on teleosts. In this study, 18 members of the SR gene family were found in large yellow croaker. The identification of the SR gene family showed that the protein length of SR members in large yellow croaker were quite different, and most SR genes were distributed in nuclear and endoplasmic. The evolutionary relationship, exon/intron structure and motif analysis revealed that members of the SR gene family were highly conserved. The results of the expression profiles after Pseudomonas plecoglossicida infection and hypoxia-exposure demonstrated that SR members were involved in inflammatory reactions. Especially, COLEC12 and SCARF1 exhibited substantial changes in response to both P. plecoglossicida and hypoxia stress, indicating their possible immunological functions. The result of this study revealed that SR genes played a vital part in the innate immune response of large yellow croaker, and would give important details for a deeper comprehension of the SR gene family's regulation mechanism under various conditions in large yellow croaker.

AIM: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) frequently have coexisting anxiety disorders. However, few studies have focused on the prevalence and risk factors of comorbid anxiety symptoms in young adult first-episode and drug-naive (FEDN) MDD patients. METHODS: We recruited 520 FEDN MDD patients and collected their demographic and clinical data. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) and the positive scale of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were used to measure depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms and psychotic symptoms, respectively. RESULTS: Anxiety symptoms were found in 79.6% of young adult patients. Besides, anxiety group patients had a higher prevalence of psychotic symptoms than the non-anxiety group. Anxiety symptoms were substantially related to suicide attempts in young adult patients. Logistic analysis shows that suicide attempts and total HAMD scores were significantly associated with anxiety symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The findings show that anxiety symptoms are common in Chinese young adult MDD patients. The anxiety group was more likely to have psychotic symptoms, suicide attempts, and more severe depressive symptoms than the non-anxiety group. Suicide attempts were associated with anxiety symptoms in young adult MDD patients, suggesting the importance of reducing anxiety symptoms in this population to prevent suicides.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Gushukang (GSK) capsules in the treatment of primary osteoporosis. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials related to the treatment of primary osteoporosis were collected through online retrieval of the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (Sino-Med), VIP, US National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Web of Science and Cochrane library. The literature was searched from January 1, 2000, to March 17, 2022. The risk bias and quality of the trials included in the meta-analysis were evaluated with the Cochrane Collaboration's risk assessment tool. The effect size was expressed as risk ratios (RRs) or mean differences (MDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: A total of 24 randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) were incorporated into this systematic review. The 2363 patients were all primary osteoporosis patients, of whom 1197 were in the observation group and 1166 were in the control group. GSK capsule group was superior to conventional medication group in improving beta type I collagen carboxy-terminal peptide (ß-CTX) (MD - 0.28, 95% CI [- 0.31, - 0.25]), while in improving prepeptide of type I procollagen (PINP), conventional medications group was superior to GSK capsule group (MD - 1.37, 95% CI [- 1.92, - 0.82]), and there were no significant differences between the two groups in overall efficacy (OE) (OR 1.62, 95% CI [0.89, 2.98]), increase of bone mineral density (BMD) (lumbar spine: MD - 0.02, 95% CI [- 0.08, 0.04]; femoral neck: MD - 0.01, 95% CI [- 0.07, 0.05]; hip: MD 0.01, 95% CI [- 0.02, 0.02]), enhancement of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (MD - 1.37, 95% CI [- 13.29, 10.55]), serum calcium (S-Ca) (MD 0.02, 95% CI [- 0.13, 0.17]), bone glutamyl protein (BGP) (MD 3.75, 95% CI [- 12.26, 19.76]), safety (OR 0.37, 95% CI [0.07, 2.02]) and pain relief (MD 0.32, 95% CI [- 0.59, 1.22]). GSK capsule combined with conventional medications group was superior to conventional medications group in improvement of OE (OR 3.19, 95% CI [2.20, 4.63]), BMD (lumbar spine (MD 0.06, 95% CI [0.02, 0.10]), femoral neck (MD 0.08, 95% CI [0.03, 0.13]), hip (MD 0.14, 95% CI [0.08, 0.21]) and other parts (MD 0.04, 95% CI [0.03, 0.05]), ALP (MD - 5.56, 95% CI [- 10.08, - 1.04]), ß-CTX (MD - 0.15, 95% CI [- 0.18, - 0.12]) and pain relief (MD - 1.25, 95% CI [- 1.83, - 0.68]), but there was no difference in S-Ca (MD 0.02, 95% CI [- 0.13, 0.17]), BGP (MD 1.30, 95% CI [- 0.29, 2.89]), PINP (MD 1.30, 95% CI [- 0.29, 2.89]), serum phosphorus (S-P) (MD 0.01, 95% CI [- 0.09, 0.12]) and safety (OR 0.71, 95% CI [0.38, 1.35]). CONCLUSION: GSK capsules can effectively treat primary osteoporosis, and when combined with conventional medications, the drug significantly increased bone mineral density, relieved pain and improved bone metabolism-related indicators in primary osteoporosis patients with better efficacy. However, due to the inclusion of Chinese literature and possible publication bias, the reliability of conclusions still requires more high-quality RCTs to enhance.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Exposure to di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) can cause neurotoxicity but the mechanism is not clear. Blood brain barrier (BBB) is one of the most important tissues to protect the brain. However, whether DEHP can disrupt the BBB or not remains unclear. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential effects of subchronic DEHP exposure on BBB integrity and discuss the role of BBB in DEHP inducible neurotoxicity with an emphasis on neuroinflammatory responses. Male adult C57BL/6J mice were orally administered with vehicle or 200 or 750 mg/kg/day DEHP for 90 days. Subchronic exposure to high-dose DEHP increased water intake but decreased body weight and brain weight. The concentrations of DEHP metabolites increased in serum from all DEHP-exposed groups while increased in brain only from the high-dose group. DEHP induced neurobehavioural alterations and damaged hippocampal neurons. DEHP increased BBB permeability by Evans blue (EB) extravasation and decreased tight junction proteins (ZO-1, occludin, and claudin-5) while presenting a neuroinflammatory feature characterized by the upregulated inflammatory mediators TNF-α and the NLRP3/caspase-1/IL-1ß inflammasome pathway. Our data provide new insights into neurotoxicity caused by subchronic DEHP exposure, which is probably involved in BBB dysfunction and neuroinflammatory responses.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION: Data on the efficacy of physical exercise interventions for individuals with gynecologic cancer are limited and discordant. The purpose of this review was to determine the benefits of exercise interventions in this population. LITERATURE SEARCH: The PubMed®, Web of Science, Embase® (Ovid), and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases were searched for studies published from January 1, 2010, to November 9, 2022. DATA EVALUATION: 12 randomized controlled trials were included. A quantitative synthesis method was used to investigate the effects of exercise interventions on individuals with gynecologic cancer. SYNTHESIS: The findings indicate that physical exercise interventions may have beneficial effects on the fatigue, depression, and health-related quality of life of this patient population. However, because of the small group of studies available, the evidence must be regarded as preliminary. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Clinicians and oncology nurses should recommend and refer individuals with gynecologic cancer to clinic- or community-based physical exercise programs.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION: Systematic reviews in adults with cancer have shown the benefits of combined aerobic and resistance exercise (CE) interventions on physical and psychological fitness. However, data on the efficacy of CE interventions for children and adolescents are limited and discordant. LITERATURE SEARCH: The PubMed®, Embase®, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure electronic databases were searched from inception to April 19, 2022. DATA EVALUATION: Nine randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria. A quantitative synthesis method was used to investigate the effects of CE interventions on fatigue, cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity levels, and health-related quality of life. SYNTHESIS: This systematic review and meta-analysis indicates that CE interventions have beneficial effects on the fatigue, cardiorespiratory fitness, and physical activity levels of this population. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Healthcare providers should implement CE interventions during hospital care and recommend home-based CE interventions to patients who have barriers to performing hospital-based sessions.

BACKGROUND: Moderate and late preterm (MLPT) birth accounts for the vast majority of preterm births, which is a global public health problem. The association between MLPT and neurobehavioral developmental delays in children and the underlying biological mechanisms need to be further revealed. The "placenta-brain axis" (PBA) provides a new perspective for gene regulation and risk prediction of neurodevelopmental delays in MLPT children. METHODS: The authors performed multivariate logistic regression models between MLPT and children's neurodevelopmental outcomes, using data from 129 MLPT infants and 3136 full-term controls from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort (MABC). Furthermore, the authors identified the abnormally regulated PBA-related genes in MLPT placenta by bioinformatics analysis of RNA-seq data and RT-qPCR verification on independent samples. Finally, the authors established the prediction model of neurodevelopmental delay in children with MLPT using multiple machine learning models. RESULTS: The authors found an increased risk of neurodevelopmental delay in children with MLPT at 6 months, 18 months, and 48 months, especially in boys. Further verification showed that APOE and CST3 genes were significantly correlated with the developmental levels of gross-motor domain, fine-motor domain, and personal social domain in 6-month-old male MLPT children. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggested that there was a sex-specific association between MLPT and neurodevelopmental delays. Moreover, APOE and CST3 were identified as placental biomarkers. The results provided guidance for the etiology investigation, risk prediction, and early intervention of neurodevelopmental delays in children with MLPT.

BACKGROUND: Cancer itself and surgery put a heavy burden on lung cancer patients, physiologically and psychologically. Enhancing self-efficacy during high-intensity interval training is essential for achieving the full benefit of pulmonary rehabilitation in lung cancer patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the effects of high-intensity interval training combined with team empowerment education on patients with lung resection. METHODS: This is a quasi-experimental trial with a pretest-posttest design. Participants were assigned to one of the 3 groups according to the order of admission: (1) combined intervention group, (2) intervention group, or (3) routine care group. The outcome measures included dyspnea, exercise capacity, exercise self-efficacy, anxiety, depression, postoperative indwelling time of thoracic drainage tube, and total in-hospital stay. RESULTS: Per-protocol results showed that dyspnea, exercise capacity, exercise self-efficacy, anxiety, and depression of the patients in the combined intervention group were significantly improved. However, no significant difference was observed in postoperative indwelling time of thoracic drainage tube or total in-hospital stay among the 3 groups. CONCLUSION: This hospital-based short-term high-intensity interval training combined with team empowerment education for lung cancer patients undergoing surgery was safe and feasible, indicating this program can be a promising strategy to manage perioperative symptoms. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study provides evidence supporting preoperative high-intensity interval training as a promising method to make the best use of preoperative time, thus improving adverse symptoms in lung cancer patients undergoing surgery, and also provides a new strategy to raise exercise self-efficacy and promote patients' rehabilitation.
