ABSTRACT

LiMnxFe1-xPO4/C is characterized by excellent multiplicative performance and high operating voltage, and as a type of cathode material, it has a high electronic conductivity and thus has received much attention. In this paper, carbon-coated LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/C was synthesized using glucose + PEG2000 as the carbon source by wet sanding and spray-drying. The experimental results show that the use of sanding and the spray-drying method can make the particle size distribution of LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/C powder more uniform. The initial discharge specific capacity of the LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4/C battery was 144.3 mA h g-1, and after 100 cycles at 1 C current, the discharge specific capacity of the battery remained at 128.2 mA h g-1 with a cycling efficiency of 94.3%. At the same time, the oxidation states and coordination environments of the elements Fe and Mn were elucidated by X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. And the ex-Fe-MS was tested under different charging and discharging conditions. The sample optimized by the orthogonal test has good cycle stability and multiplication performance.

ABSTRACT

Potassium-ion battery is rich in resources and cheap in price, in the era of lithium-ion battery commercialization, potassium-ion battery is the most likely to replace it. Based on the classification and summary of electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries, this paper focuses on the introduction of manganese-based oxide KxMnO2. The layered KxMnO2 has a large layer spacing and can be embedded with large size potassium-ions. This paper focuses on the preparation and doping of manganese-based cathode materials for potassium-ion batteries, summarizes the main challenges of KxMnO2-based cathode materials in the current stage of research and further looks into its future development direction.

ABSTRACT

Forward osmosis (FO) membrane processes could operate without hydraulic pressures, enabling the efficient treatment of wastewaters with mitigated membrane fouling and enhanced efficiency. Designing a high-performance polyamide (PA) layer on ceramic substrates remains a challenge for FO desalination applications. Herein, we report the enhanced water treatment performance of thin-film nanocomposite ceramic-based FO membranes via an in situ grown Zr-MOF (UiO-66-NH2) interlayer. With the Zr-MOF interlayer, the ceramic-based FO membranes exhibit lower thickness, higher cross-linking degree, and increased surface roughness, leading to higher water flux of 27.38 L m-2 h-1 and lower reverse salt flux of 3.45 g m-2 h-1. The ceramic-based FO membranes with Zr-MOF interlayer not only have an application potential in harsh environments such as acidic solution (pH 3) and alkaline solution (pH 11), but also exhibit promising water and reverse salt transport properties, which are better than most MOF-incorporated PA membranes. Furthermore, the membranes could reject major species (ions, oil and organics) with rejections >94 % and water flux of 22.62-14.35 L m-2 h-1 in the treatment of actual alkaline industrial wastewater (pH 8.6). This rational design proposed in this study is not only applicable for the development of a high-quality ceramic-based FO membrane with enhanced performance but also can be potentially extended to more challenging water treatment applications.

ABSTRACT

Background: Catheter ablation failure poses a clinical challenge for epicardial or intramural ventricular arrhythmia (VA); however, guidewire ablation within the coronary venous system (CVS) may be effective and safe for targeting VAs. Methods: The ex vivo phase included four steps. In step 1, the steam pop incidence rates during guidewire ablation at power settings of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 W were analyzed using 10 mm- and 20 mm-tip guidewires. In step 2, guidewire ablation was performed for application durations of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 90 s, and the lesion size was measured. In step 3, the effects of saline infusion (0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mL/min) on lesion dimensions and steam pop formation were examined. In step 4, an orthogonal array was constructed to obtain the optimal guidewire ablation parameters. In the in vivo phase, guidewire ablation within the CVS was performed in three dogs, and the lesion features in 10 days after ablation were observed. Results: In step 1, the steam pop incidence rates at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 W were 0%, 0%, 12.5%, 62.5%, and 100% using the 10 mm-tip guidewires and 0%, 0%, 0%, 25%, and 75% using the 20 mm-tip guidewires, respectively. In step 2, we found that the lesion areas increased with an increase in the ablation duration (the maximum lesion diameters at 30, 60, and 90 s were 4.9 ± 0.4, 7.0 ± 0.8, and 9.2 ± 0.7 mm in the 10 mm group and 3.2 ± 0.5, 4.5 ± 0.4, and 5.3 ± 0.7 mm in the 20 mm-tip group, respectively). In step 3, we observed that saline infusion was negatively correlated with ablation lesions but had a lower risk of steam pop. The optimal parameters for the 20 mm-tip guidewire ablation were 15 W, 50 s, and 2 mL/min or 20 W, 70 s, and 2 mL/min. In the in vivo phase, effective ablation lesions with maximum and minimum diameters of 3.2 ± 0.3 and 2.8 ± 0.5 mm, respectively, were created by the guidewires during the 10-day observation period after ablation. Conclusion: This novel radiofrequency guidewire ablation technique can feasibly create effective lesions within the CVS, which may improve the efficacy of catheter ablation for challenging epicardial or intramural VA.

BACKGROUND: Predicting relationships between plant functional traits and environmental effects in their habitats is a central issue in terms of classic ecological theories. Yet, only weak correlation with functional trait composition of local plant communities may occur, implying that some essential information might be ignored. In this study, to address this uncertainty, the objective of the study is to test whether and how the consistency of trait relationships occurs by analyzing broad variation in eight traits related to leaf morphological structure, nutrition status and physiological activity, within a large number of plant species in two distinctive but comparable harsh habitats (high-cold alpine fir forest vs. north-cold boreal coniferous forest). RESULTS: The contrasting and/or consistent relationships between leaf functional traits in the two distinctive climate regions were observed. Higher specific leaf area, photosynthetic rate, and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE) with lower N concentration occurred in north-cold boreal forest rather than in high-cold alpine forest, indicating the acquisitive vs. conservative resource utilizing strategies in both habitats. The principal component analysis illuminated the divergent distributions of herb and xylophyta groups at both sites. Herbs tend to have a resource acquisition strategy, particularly in boreal forest. The structural equation modeling revealed that leaf density had an indirect effect on PNUE, primarily mediated by leaf structure and photosynthesis. Most of the traits were strongly correlated with each other, highlighting the coordination and/or trade-offs. CONCLUSIONS: We can conclude that the variations in leaf functional traits in north-cold boreal forest were largely distributed in the resource-acquisitive strategy spectrum, a quick investment-return behavior; while those in the high-cold alpine forest tended to be mainly placed at the resource-conservative strategy end. The habitat specificity for the relationships between key functional traits could be a critical determinant of local plant communities. Therefore, elucidating plant economic spectrum derived from variation in major functional traits can provide a fundamental insight into how plants cope with ecological adaptation and evolutionary strategies under environmental changes, particularly in these specific habitats.

ABSTRACT

Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) are effective for solving partial differential equations (PDEs). This method of embedding partial differential equations and their initial boundary conditions into the loss functions of neural networks has successfully solved forward and inverse PDE problems. In this study, we considered a parametric light wave equation, discretized it using the central difference, and, through this difference scheme, constructed a new neural network structure named the second-order neural network structure. Additionally, we used the adaptive activation function strategy and gradient-enhanced strategy to improve the performance of the neural network and used the deep mixed residual method (MIM) to reduce the high computational cost caused by the enhanced gradient. At the end of this paper, we give some numerical examples of nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations to verify the effectiveness of the method.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Screening and eradication of Helicobacter pylori help reduce disparities in the incidence of gastric cancer. We aimed to evaluate its acceptability and feasibility in the indigenous communities and develop a family index-case method to roll out this programme. DESIGN: We enrolled residents aged 20-60 years from Taiwanese indigenous communities to receive a course of test, treat, retest and re-treat initial treatment failures with the 13C-urea breath tests and four-drug antibiotic treatments. We also invited the family members of a participant (constituting an index case) to join the programme and evaluated whether the infection rate would be higher in the positive index cases. RESULTS: Between 24 September 2018 and 31 December 2021, 15 057 participants (8852 indigenous and 6205 non-indigenous) were enrolled, with a participation rate of 80.0% (15 057 of 18 821 invitees). The positivity rate was 44.1% (95% CI 43.3% to 44.9%). In the proof-of-concept study with 72 indigenous families (258 participants), family members of a positive index case had 1.98 times (95% CI 1.03 to 3.80) higher prevalence of H. pylori than those of a negative index case. The results were replicated in the mass screening setting (1.95 times, 95% CI 1.61 to 2.36) when 1115 indigenous and 555 non-indigenous families were included (4157 participants). Of the 6643 testing positive, 5493 (82.6%) received treatment. According to intention-to-treat and per-protocol analyses, the eradication rates were 91.7% (89.1% to 94.3%) and 92.1% (89.2% to 95.0%), respectively, after one to two courses of treatment. The rate of adverse effects leading to treatment discontinuation was low at 1.2% (0.9% to 1.5%). CONCLUSION: A high participation rate, a high eradication rate of H. pylori and an efficient rollout method indicate that a primary prevention strategy is acceptable and feasible in indigenous communities. ABSTRACT

The mole cricket Gryllotalpa orientalis is an evolutionarily, medicinal, and agriculturally significant insect that inhabits underground environments and is distributed globally. This study measured genome size by flow cytometry and k-mer based on low-coverage sequencing, and nuclear repetitive elements were also identified. The haploid genome size estimate is 3.14 Gb by flow cytometry, 3.17 Gb, and 3.77 Gb-based two k-mer methods, respectively, which is well within the range previously reported for other species of the suborder Ensifera. 56% of repetitive elements were found in G. orientalis, similar to 56.83% in Locusta migratoria. However, the great size of repetitive sequences could not be annotated to specific repeat element families. For the repetitive elements that were annotated, Class I-LINE retrotransposon elements were the most common families and more abundant than satellite and Class I-LTR. These results based on the newly developed genome survey could be used in the taxonomic study and whole genome sequencing to improve the understanding of the biology of G. orientalis.

ABSTRACT

A set of myelodysplasia-related (MDS-R) gene mutations are incorporated into the 2022 European LeukemiaNet risk classification as adverse genetic factors for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) based on their poor prognostic impact on older patients. The impact of these mutations on younger patients (age < 60 years) remains elusive. In the study of 1213 patients with de novo non-M3 AML, we identified MDS-R mutations in 32.7% of the total cohort, 44.9% of older patients and 23.4% of younger patients. The patients with MDS-R mutations had a significantly lower complete remission rate in both younger and older age groups. With a median follow-up of 9.2 years, the MDS-R group experienced shorter overall survival (P = 0.034 for older and 0.035 for younger patients) and event-free survival (P = 0.004 for older and 0.042 for younger patients). Furthermore, patients with MDS-R mutations more frequently harbored measurable residual disease that was detectable using next generation sequencing at morphological CR than those without MDS-R mutations. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) might ameliorate the negative impact of MDS-R mutations. In summary, AML patients with MDS-R mutations have significantly poorer outcomes regardless of age. More intensive treatment, such as allo-HSCT and/or novel therapies, is warranted for AML patients with MDS-R mutations.

ABSTRACT

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the most common digestive clinical problem worldwide that affects approximately 20% of the adult populations in Western countries. Poor oral hygiene has been reported to be associated with GERD as an atypical clinical complication. However, evidence showing the relationship between GERD and the risk of periodontitis is less clear. The present study aimed to use a retrospective cohort study design to further clarify the association between GERD and the subsequent risk of periodontitis. Methods: The risk of periodontitis in patients with GERD was investigated by analyzing epidemiological data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database from 2008 to 2018. We selected 20,125 participants with a minimum age of 40 years in the GERD group and 1:1 propensity-matched these with non-GERD individuals by sex, age, and comorbidities. The incidence of periodontitis was determined at the end of 2018. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to evaluate the risk of periodontitis in patients with GERD. Results: The overall incidence rate of the periodontitis risk was 1.38-fold higher (30.0 vs. 21.7/1000 person years, adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 1.36, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.28−1.45) in patients with GERD than in those without GERD. After stratified analyses for sex, age, and comorbidity, patients with GERD had a higher risk of periodontitis for age (aHR = 1.31, 95% CI = 1.20−1.42 for 40−54 years and aHR = 1.42, 95% CI =1.28−1.57 for 55−69 years), sex (aHR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.28−1.54 for men and aHR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.23−1.45 for women), and presence (aHR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.27−1.45) and absence (aHR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.21−1.62) of comorbidity than those without GERD. Among the GERD cohort, the risk for periodontitis was increased with an increasing number of emergency room visits (≥ 1 vs. <1, aHR = 5.19, 95% CI = 2.16−12.5). Conclusions: Our results revealed that patients with GERD have a higher risk of periodontitis development than those without GERD. Clinicians should pay more attention to identifying and managing periodontitis in patients with GERD.

Osteoporotic fractures, also known as fragility fractures, are prevalent in the elderly and bring tremendous social burdens. Poor bone quality, weak repair capacity, instability, and high failure rate of internal fixation are main characteristics of osteoporotic fractures. Osteoporotic bone defects are common and need to be repaired by appropriate materials. Proximal humerus, distal radius, tibia plateau, calcaneus, and spine are common osteoporotic fractures with bone defect. Here, the consensus from the Osteoporosis Group of Chinese Orthopaedic Association concentrates on the epidemiology, characters, and management strategies of common osteoporotic fractures with bone defect to standardize clinical practice in bone repair of osteoporotic fractures.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the impact of multidisciplinary pre-dialysis care (MDPC) on the risks of peritonitis, technique failure and mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. METHODS: Incident end-stage kidney disease patients who received peritoneal dialysis (PD) for more than 90 days were recruited in this study from 1 January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2018. Patients were classified into two groups, the MDPC group and the control group, that received the usual care by nephrologists. Risks of the first episode of peritonitis, technique failure and mortality were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: There were 126 patients under the usual care and 546 patients under the MDPC. Patients in the MDPC group initiated dialysis earlier than those in the non-MDPC group. There was no significant difference between these two groups in time to the first episode of peritonitis. Compared to the non-MDPC group, the MDPC group was at similar risks of technique failure (adjusted HR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.64-1.15) and mortality (adjusted HR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.42-1.02). Among patients with diabetes, the risk of mortality was significantly reduced in the MDPC group with an adjusted HR of 0.45 (95% CI = 0.25-0.80). CONCLUSIONS: There was no significant difference in time to develop the first episode of peritonitis, and risks of technique failure and mortality between these two groups. Diabetic PD patients under MDPC had a lower risk of mortality than those under the usual care.

ABSTRACT

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common age-related neurodegenerative disorder with limited clinical treatments. The occurrence of PD includes both genetic and environmental toxins, such as the pesticides paraquat (PQ), as major contributors to PD pathology in both invertebrate and mammalian models. Calycosin, an isoflavone phytoestrogen, has multiple pharmacological properties, including neuroprotective activity. However, the paucity of information regarding the neuroprotective potential of calycosin on PQ-induced neurodegeneration led us to explore whether calycosin can mitigate PD-like phenotypes and the underlying molecular mechanisms. We used a PQ-induced PD model in Drosophila as a cost-effective in vivo screening platform to investigate the neuroprotective efficacy of natural compounds on PD. We reported that calycosin shows a protective role in preventing dopaminergic (DA) neuronal cell death in PQ-exposed Canton S flies. Calycosin-fed PQ-exposed flies exhibit significant resistance against PQ-induced mortality and locomotor deficits in terms of reduced oxidative stress, loss of DA neurons, the depletion of dopamine content, and phosphorylated JNK-caspase-3 levels. Additionally, mechanistic studies show that calycosin administration improves PQ-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and stimulates mitophagy and general autophagy with reduced pS6K and p4EBP1 levels, suggestive of a maintained energy balance between anabolic and catabolic processes, resulting in the inhibition of neuronal cell death. Collectively, this study substantiates the protective effect of calycosin against PQ-induced neurodegeneration by improving DA neurons' survival and reducing apoptosis, likely via autophagy induction, and it is implicated as a novel therapeutic application against toxin-induced PD pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis can lead to systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, contributing to the development of various diseases. Periodontitis could also be associated with several ocular diseases. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study using the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan to evaluate the risk of cataract in people with and without periodontitis. We established a periodontitis cohort and a non-periodontitis cohort, which included 359,254 individuals between 2000 and 2012. Age, gender, and enrolled year were matched. All participants were monitored until the end of 2013. Cox proportional hazard models were applied to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Patients with periodontitis had a significantly higher risk to develop cataract than those without periodontitis [10.7 vs. 7.91 per 1,000 person-years, crude HR = 1.35 (95% CI = 1.32-1.39), and adjusted HR = 1.33 (95% CI = 1.30-1.36)]. The significant levels remained the same after stratifying by age, gender, presence of comorbidity, and use of corticosteroid. In addition, we found that diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia had a synergistic effect in the interaction of periodontitis and cataract development. CONCLUSION: Patients with periodontitis have a higher risk of cataract development than those without periodontitis. Such patients may request frequent ocular health check-up. Further studies should be performed to confirm the association and to understand the mechanisms.

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a condition that is distinct from thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) that may also occur after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccinations. Previous reports revealed an increased ITP incidence after ChAdOx1, a vaccine for COVID-19. Our study aimed to highlight the key features of ITP after COVID-19 vaccination. From April to October 2021, we collected data on 23 patients, including nine men and 14 women, with ITP from five hospitals across Taiwan who received either the ChAdOx1 or mRNA-1273 vaccine before development or exacerbation of ITP. Our findings revealed that both ChAdOx1 and mRNA-1273 vaccines were associated with ITP. Many patients responded well to steroids and immune suppressants, which may also suggest that the nature of thrombocytopenia is more like ITP rather than TTS. Lack of thrombosis, low D-dimer level, and negative anti-PF4 result could help to exclude TTS, which is also a rare but a far more lethal condition.

ABSTRACT

Rational design of high-performance stable metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes is challenging, especially for the sustainable treatment of hypersaline waters to address critical global environmental issues. Herein, a molecular-level intra-crystalline defect strategy combined with a selective layer thinning protocol is proposed to fabricate robust ultrathin missing-linker UiO-66 (ML-UiO-66) membrane to enable fast water permeation. Besides almost complete salt rejection, high and stable water flux is achieved even under long-term pervaporation operation in hash environments, which effectively addresses challenging stability issues. Then, detailed structural characterizations are employed to identify the type, chemical functionality, and density of intra-crystalline missing-linker defects. Moreover, molecular dynamics simulations shed light on the positive atomistic role of these defects, which are responsible for substantially enhancing structural hydrophilicity and enlarging pore window, consequently allowing ultra-fast water transport via a lower-energy-barrier pathway across three-dimensional sub-nanochannels during pervaporation. Unlike common unfavorable defect effects, the present positive intra-crystalline defect engineering concept at the molecular level is expected to pave a promising way toward not only rational design of next-generation MOF membranes with enhanced permeation performance, but additional water treatment applications.

ABSTRACT

Joint replacement surgery is one of the orthopedic surgeries with high successful rates; however, wear debris generated from prostheses can ultimately lead to periprosthetic osteolysis and failure of the implant. The implant-derived particulate debris such as ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) can initiate the local immune response and recruit monocytic cells to phagocytose particles for generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS induces osteoclastogenesis and macrophages to secrete cytokines which ultimately promote the development of osteolysis. In this work, we develop the few-layered Nb2C (FNC) as an antioxidant which possesses the feature of decreasing the production of cytokines and inhibiting osteoclastogenesis by its ROS adsorption. Moreover, local injection of FNC attenuates the UHMWPE-induced osteolysis in a mouse calvarial model. In sum, our results suggest that FNC can be used for treating osteolytic bone disease caused by excessive osteoclastogenesis.

ABSTRACT

There has been a recognizable surge in cosmetic surgery in recent years, partly influenced by social media, and the easy accessibility to such medical procedures. As with all types of surgery, the risks of complications are real, and in this specific setting, they tend to occur in a younger age group. Here, we discuss a rare complication and subsequent presentation of tension pneumocephalus, following an episode of cardiac arrest in a 58 year old female, during elective cosmetic-facial surgery. Typically, pneumocephalus develops when there are skull or facial bone fractures, and presents characteristically with leakage of cerebrospinal fluid from the ears and/or nose. The absence of the typical clinical signs and the lack of a clinical history or radiologically evidence of skull or facial bone fractions, may result in a delayed diagnosis, permanent brain injury and death. Awareness of such an unusual complication is therefore crucial when considering any surgery to the head and face (including cosmetic surgery), or following prolonged resuscitative efforts, which may well develop days after the inciting event.

Oxidative stress-related cartilage degeneration, synovitis, and joint pain play vital roles in the progress of osteoarthritis (OA). Anti-oxidative stress agents not only prevent structural damage progression but also relieve OA-related pain. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effect of methylene blue (MB), a classical and important anti-oxidant with strong neural affinity. Experimental OA was established in rats by radial transection of medial collateral ligament and medial meniscus (MCLT + MMT) of the right knee joint. The OA rats received intra-articular injection of MB (1 mg/kg) every week starting one week after surgery. We showed that MB administration exerted significant cartilage protection, synovitis inhibition as well as pain relief in OA rats. In human chondrocytes and fibroblast-like synoviocytes, MB significantly attenuated tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP)-induced inflammatory response and oxidative stress. We demonstrated that these effects of MB resulted from dual targets of important antioxidant enzymes, Nrf2 and PRDX1, which also mutually reinforcing and participated in an interaction. Furthermore, we found that calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a neural inflammatory mediator, was accumulated around the vessel in synovium and subchondral bone in OA rats and in TBHP-treated primary cortical neurons; MB administration significantly inhibited CGRP expression through upregulation of Nrf2 and PRDX1. Taken together, these results suggest that MB ameliorates oxidative stress via Nrf2/PRDX1 regulation to prevent progression and relieve pain of OA.
