ABSTRACT

MRI remains the most useful noninvasive test for diagnosis of meniscal tears. Knowledge of normal anatomy and familiarity with patterns of meniscal tears are prerequisites when interpreting MRI studies of the knee. Radiologists should pay close attention to technical factors, normal variants, and associated abnormalities to maintain high diagnostic accuracy. Details of meniscal tears should be described as to best aid in orthopedic decision-making.

ABSTRACT

The hydrate transition temperatures of Na2SO4·10H2O to Na2SO4, KF·2H2O to KF, and Na2HPO4·7H2O to Na2HPO4·2H2O were established using ACS grade salts as 32.374 °C, 41.422 °C, and 48.222 °C, respectively. A simple and reliable procedure involving inexpensive materials was used to realize these transitions as temperature fixed points. Each transition temperature was attained within 30 minutes of hydrate initiation and remained constant to within ±0.002 °C for more than 10 hours if the mixture was stirred. The established transition temperatures were sensitive at the 0.001 °C level to the amount of impurities, so the materials used should be of the highest quality available. These systems fill a gap in the existing spectrum of temperature standards and should be useful in biomedical laboratories for calibrating thermometers.

ABSTRACT

The sharpness and reproducibility of the gallium melting point were studied and the melting temperature of gallium in terms of IPTS-68 was determined. Small melting-point cells designed for use with thermistors are described. Nine gallium cells including three levels of purity were used in 68 separate determinations fo the melting point. The melting point of 99.99999% pure gallium in terms of IPTS-68 is found to be 29.771(4) +/- 0.001(4) degree C; the melting range is less than 0.0005 degree C and is reproducible to +/- 0.0004 degree C.

ABSTRACT

Two sets of passive radio observations of Venus-measurements of the spectrum of the disk temperature near the 1-centimeter wavelength, and interferometric measurements of the planetary limb darkening at the 1.35-centimeter water vapor resonance-show no evidence of water vapor in the lower atmosphere of Venus. The upper limit of 2 x 10(-3) for the mixing ratio of water vapor is substantially less than the amounts derived from the Venera space probes (0.5 x 10(-2) to 2.5 x 10(-2)). This amount of water vapor cannot produce dense clouds, and it is doubtful that it may contribute significantly to a greenhouse effect.
