ABSTRACT

The dynamic structure factorS(Q,E), whereQandEare momentum and energy transfer, respectively, has been measured for liquid Sb, using inelastic x-ray scattering. A modified damped harmonic oscillator model function was applied to analyseS(Q,E) of liquid Sb and also to that of liquid Bi by Inuiet al(2015Phys. Rev.B92, 054206). The obtained excitation energy was in fairly good agreement with that predicted byab initiomolecular dynamics simulations on these liquid semi-metals. The excitation energy of the longitudinal acoustic mode in liquid Sb and liquid Bi exhibits flat-toppedQdependence whereas the lower excitation energy below the longitudinal acoustic excitation showsQ-gap behaviour. From the viscosity estimated from theQ-gap experimentally obtained, it is inferred that the lower energy excitation arises from the transverse acoustic excitation in the liquids.

ABSTRACT

Inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) measurements were carried out on liquid Se50Te50 at temperatures up to 1323 K to investigate how the atomic dynamics changes with temperature through the semiconductor-metal transition. The acoustic mode was clearly observed in the dynamic structure factor and its energy was determined using a damped harmonic oscillator model. The dynamical sound speed obtained by IXS for [Formula: see text] nm-1 was found to behave similarly to the temperature dependence of ultrasonic sound velocity with a minimum near the semiconductor metal transition. The results can be explained by taking liquid Se50Te50 to be an inhomogeneous liquid consisting of metallic and semiconducting domains whose size is approximately 3 nm. The relaxation time obtained from frequency dependence of the dynamical sound speed was on a picosecond time scale.

ABSTRACT

The pseudogap phenomenon in the cuprates is arguably the most mysterious puzzle in the field of high-temperature superconductivity. The tetragonal cuprate HgBa2CuO4+δ, with only one CuO2 layer per primitive cell, is an ideal system to tackle this puzzle. Here, we measure the magnetic susceptibility anisotropy within the CuO2 plane with exceptionally high-precision magnetic torque experiments. Our key finding is that a distinct two-fold in-plane anisotropy sets in below the pseudogap temperature T*, which provides thermodynamic evidence for a nematic phase transition with broken four-fold symmetry. Surprisingly, the nematic director orients along the diagonal direction of the CuO2 square lattice, in sharp contrast to the bond nematicity along the Cu-O-Cu direction. Another remarkable feature is that the enhancement of the diagonal nematicity with decreasing temperature is suppressed around the temperature at which short-range charge-density-wave formation occurs. Our result suggests a competing relationship between diagonal nematic and charge-density-wave order in HgBa2CuO4+δ.

ABSTRACT

X-ray diffraction and inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of liquid Ba8Ga16Sn30 have been carried out to investigate local structure and atomic dynamics in the liquid. The pair distribution function shows shorter and longer interatomic distances in the first coordination shell. The dynamic structure factor exhibits the inelastic excitations on both sides of the quasielastic central peak. The inelastic excitations disperse with increasing the momentum transfer, suggesting the longitudinal acoustic mode. We found a low energy excitation in addition to the longitudinal acoustic excitation in the dynamic structure factor and it reminds us a strong relationship with a rattling motion of a guest (Ba) atom in the solid state. The temperature dependence of the pair distribution function and the longitudinal acoustic excitation energy is very weak in a range from 600 to 900 °C. The result suggests that Ba and other atoms in the melt are located around minimum positions of the effective pair potential approximated as a harmonic one.

ABSTRACT

Phonon-phonon scattering dominates the thermal properties in nonmetallic materials, and it directly influences device performance in applications. The understanding of the scattering has been progressing using computational approaches, and the direct and systematic observation of phonon modes that include momentum dependences is desirable. We report experimental data on the phonon dispersion curves and lifetimes in an epitaxially grown ScN film using inelastic x-ray scattering measurements. The momentum dependence of the optical phonon lifetimes is estimated from the spectral width, and the highest-energy phonon mode around the zone center is found to possess a short lifetime of 0.21 ps. A comparison with first-principles calculations shows that our observed phonon lifetimes are quantitatively explained by three-body phonon-phonon interactions.

ABSTRACT

Despite possessing a limited number of neurones compared to vertebrates, honeybees show remarkable learning and memory performance, an example being 'dance communication'. In this phenomenon, foraging honeybees learn the location of a newly discovered food source and transmit the information to nestmates by symbolic abdomen vibrating behaviour, leading to navigation of nestmates to the new food source. As an initial step toward understanding the detailed molecular mechanisms underlying the sophisticated learning and memory performance of the honeybee, we focused on the neural immediate early genes (IEGs), which are specific genes quickly transcribed after neural activity without de novo protein synthesis. Although these have been reported to play an essential role in learning and memory processes in vertebrates, far fewer studies have been performed in insects in this regard. From RNA-sequencing analysis and subsequent assays, we identified three genes, Src homology 3 (SH3) domain binding kinase, family with sequence similarity 46 and GB47136, as novel neural IEGs in the honeybee. Foragers and/or orientating bees, which fly around their hives to memorize the positional information, showed induced expression of these IEGs in the mushroom body, a higher-order centre essential for learning and memory, indicating a possible role for the novel IEGs in foraging-related learning and memory processes in the honeybee.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is an independent predictor of death after living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT). However, the ability of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria for sarcopenia (defined as reduced skeletal muscle mass plus low muscle strength) to predict surgical outcomes in patients who have undergone LDLT has not been determined. METHODS: This study prospectively enrolled 366 patients who underwent LDLT at Kyushu University Hospital. Skeletal muscle area (determined by computed tomography), hand-grip strength, and gait speed were measured in 102 patients before LDLT. We investigated the relationship between sarcopenia and surgical outcomes after LDLT performed in three time periods. RESULTS: The number of patients with lower skeletal muscle area has increased to 52.9% in recent years. The incidence of sarcopenia according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria was 23.5% (24/102). Patients with sarcopenia (defined by skeletal muscle area and functional parameters) had significantly lower skeletal muscle area and weaker hand-grip strength than did those without sarcopenia. Compared with non-sarcopenic patients, patients with sarcopenia also had significantly worse liver function, greater estimated blood loss, greater incidence of postoperative complications of Clavien-Dindo grade IV or greater (including amount of ascites on postoperative day 14, total bilirubin on postoperative day 14, and postoperative sepsis), and longer postoperative hospital stay. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed sarcopenia as a significant predictor of 6-month mortality. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of skeletal muscle mass and function can predict surgical outcomes in LDLT patients.

ABSTRACT

Although Roux-en Y hepaticojejunostomy was previously recommended for the biliary reconstruction in liver transplantation for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), some recent reports showed no difference in the graft survival between Roux-en Y and duct-to-duct anastomosis in deceased-donor liver transplantation. On the other hand, considering the risk of recurrence and the short length of the bile duct of the graft, duct-to-duct biliary anastomosis has never been reported in a patient undergoing living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for PSC. A 45 year-old male underwent LDLT using a left-lobe graft donated from his brother. Cholangiography showed no lesion in his common bile duct and duct-to-duct anastomosis was chosen for him. Fifteen months later, he suffered cholangitis due to PSC recurrence and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography was performed. The stents were inserted into his B2 and B3, and he remains well. Because of the ability to easily manage biliary complication, duct-to-duct biliary reconstruction may become the first choice in LDLT for PSC without common bile duct lesions.

ABSTRACT

Therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome (t-AML/MDS) represent severe late effects in patients receiving hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for lymphoma. The choice between high-dose therapy with autologous HCT and allogeneic HCT with reduced-intensity conditioning remains controversial in patients with relapsed lymphoma. We retrospectively analyzed incidence and risk factors for the development of t-AML/MDS in lymphoma patients treated with autologous or allogeneic HCT. A total of 13 810 lymphoma patients who received autologous (n=9963) or allogeneic (n=3847) HCT between 1985 and 2012 were considered. At a median overall survival (OS) of 52 and 46 months in autologous and allogeneic HCT groups, respectively, lymphoma patients receiving autologous HCT (1.38% at 3 years after autologous HCT) had a significant risk for developing t-AML/MDS compared to allogeneic HCT (0.37% at 3 years after allogeneic HCT, P<0.001). Significant risk factors for the development of t-AML/MDS after autologous and allogeneic HCT were high-stage risk at HCT (P=0.04) or secondary malignancies (P<0.001) and receiving cord blood stem cell (P=0.03) or involved field radiotherapy (P=0.002), respectively. Strategies that carefully select lymphoma patients for autologous HCT, by excluding lymphoma patients with high-stage risk at HCT, may allow the identification of individual lymphoma patients at particular high risk for t-AML/MDS.

ABSTRACT

Reconstruction of multiple venous orifices of a right lobe graft is a time-consuming and troublesome procedure in right lobe living-donor liver transplantation. In the current study, we present a new venous reconstruction technique for a right lobe graft with multiple and complex hepatic vein (HV) orifices, in which procurement of the recipient's left portal vein was performed in situ to keep the anhepatic period to a minimum. All of the HV orifices were reconstructed together at the back table, while maintaining patency of the recipient's systemic and splanchnic circulation. A homologous vein graft and veno-venous bypass were not necessary. All HVs were patent during the follow-up and the patient was free from complications. In conclusion, the present technique is readily available for reconstruction of complex and multiple HV tributaries, while avoiding a long anhepatic time and the use of veno-venous bypass.

BACKGROUND: Booklice, belonging to the order Psocoptera, are small household insect pests that are distributed worldwide. Liposcelis bostrychophila, a common home-inhabiting species of booklouse, infests old books, sheets of paper, and stored food. Recent entomological and serological studies demonstrated that L. bostrychophila accounted for the majority of detectable insects in house dust and could be a potent inducer of respiratory allergy. Our recent proteomic analysis identified a potent allergenic protein from L. bostrychophila, designated Lip b 1, and determined its partial amino acid sequences. METHODS: Cloning of cDNAs for Lip b 1 was performed by large-scale transcriptome analysis (RNA-seq) and subsequent reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The full-length amino acid sequences deduced from Lip b 1 cDNAs were bioinformatically analyzed. The recombinant proteins of glutathione S-transferase (GST)-fused Lip b 1 were analyzed by Western blot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: Lip b 1 cDNAs encoding two types of 254-amino acid proteins were cloned. The clones shared 87% identity, and the deduced molecular weights and isoelectric points were consistent with those determined in our previous study. The two types of Lip b 1 proteins in the GST-fused form were similarly reactive with sera from allergic patients sensitized with L. bostrychophila. CONCLUSIONS: Lip b 1 is a novel protein possibly causing booklouse allergy.

ABSTRACT

Portal decompression is an approach for reducing portal overflow caused by small-for-size syndrome. We report the case of a patient who recovered from rapidly progressing hyperbilirubinemia caused by a small graft by decompressing portal overflow with splenic artery embolization following a living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). The patient was a 54-year-old man with end-stage liver disease secondary to alcoholic liver cirrhosis; the donor was his 54-year-old wife. The graft volume of the left lobe was 444 mL, which was 34.8% of the standard liver volume (SLV) and insufficient for the recipient; thus, the plan was to use the right lobe for the graft. The patient underwent LDLT with a right lobe graft; the volume to SLV ratio was 39.1%, and the graft-to-recipient-weight ratio was 0.72%. Although portal pressure was low during the operation, the patient eventually developed small-for-size syndrome after LDLT. It was conceivable that because the patient had splenomegaly, portal decompression would be effective. Splenic arterial embolization was performed successfully on postoperative day (POD) 7. The patient's total bilirubin level was increased to 40 mg/dL on POD16. Decreased portal flow, which was shown by ultrasound screening to be "to-and-flo," increased again on POD23 to one-third of that on POD1. He was discharged without any infectious complications. Additional splenic artery embolization after LDLT may be a convenient option for reducing portal overflow for patients with splenomegaly if the portal decompression was not performed for some reason at the surgery.

ABSTRACT

We report that a ferroelectric-like metallic state with reduced anisotropy of polarization is created by the doping of conduction electrons into BaTiO3, on the bases of x-ray/electron diffraction and infrared spectroscopic experiments. The crystal structure is heterogeneous in nanometer-scale, as enabled by the reduced polarization anisotropy. The enhanced infrared intensity of soft phonon along with the resistivity reduction suggests the presence of unusual electron-phonon coupling, which may be responsible for the emergent ferroelectric structure compatible with metallic state.

BACKGROUND: A precise estimation of the capacity of the remnant liver following partial liver resection is important. In this study, the regional function of the liver in patients undergoing living-donor liver transplantation was evaluated by gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (EOB)-enhanced MRI, with special reference to the congested region. METHODS: EOB-MRI analysis was performed before hepatectomy in donors, and 7 days after surgery in the donor and recipient. In the hepatocyte phase, from images obtained 15 min after Primovist® injection, the signal intensity in each liver segment was measured and divided by the signal intensity of the erector spinae muscle (liver to muscle ratio, LMR) for standardization. Inter-regional differences in LMRs were analysed in donors and recipients. RESULTS: Thirty-two living donors and 31 recipients undergoing living-donor liver transplantation were enrolled. In donors, the LMRs of the remnant left lobe were almost equivalent among the liver segments. In the remnant right lobe without the middle hepatic vein, the mean(s.d.) LMR for congested segments (S5 and S8) was significantly lower than that for non-congested segments (S6 and S7): 2·60(0·52) versus 3·64(0·56) respectively (P < 0·001). After surgery, values in the non-congested region were almost identical to those in the preoperative donor liver. LMR values in the left and right lobe graft were significantly lower than those in the corresponding segment before donor surgery (P < 0·001). CONCLUSION: The function of the congested region secondary to outflow obstruction in the remnant donor liver was approximately 70 per cent of that in the non-congested region. EOB-MRI is a promising tool to assess regional liver function, with good spatial resolution.

BACKGROUND: Several animal models have revealed that platelet-derived serotonin initiates liver regeneration after hepatectomy. However, there are few reports regarding the effects of serotonin in the clinical setting. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of serotonin and platelets in the early phase after healthy living donor hepatectomy. STUDY DESIGN: Stored samples from 34 living donors who received left lobectomy with caudate lobectomy (LL+C) or right lobectomy (RL) were available in the study. Serum serotonin levels and platelet counts associated with liver regeneration such as whole liver volume and hepatic graft weight (GW) were retrospectively collected from the database and analyzed. RESULTS: The remnant liver volume rate of RL grafts was smaller than that of LL+C grafts (45.4% vs 64.7%; P < .001). The regeneration rate at 7 days after surgery did not differ between the 2 groups (123% vs 122%). The serotonin levels and platelet counts decreased after surgery until postoperative day 3, then increased thereafter. The platelet counts and serotonin levels of LL+C donors were significantly higher than those of RL donors. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that platelets and serotonin play a pivotal role in initiating liver regeneration in the remnant liver.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C viral graft reinfection is almost a universal event after liver transplantation with consequent disease progression. METHODS: We applied triple therapy (n = 21) with the use of telaprevir (TVR; n = 12) or simeprevir (SVR; n = 9). RESULTS: TVR was given at the dose 1,500 mg daily (n = 11) with reduced dose of cyclosporine at 25% to 50%, and SVR was given at the dose 100 mg daily with unadjusted cyclosporine, followed by 12 weeks of dual therapy. The early viral response was achieved in 91.7% (n = 11), end of treatment response rate was 91.7% (n = 11), and sustained viral response rate was 83.3% (n = 10) in the TVR group, and respective rates were 88.9% (n = 8), 77.8% (n = 7), and 77.8% (n = 7) in the SVR group. Although granulocyte colony-stimulating factor was not given in the patients with triple therapy, blood transfusion was performed in 7 cases (58.3%) in the TVR group and 1 case (11.1%) in the SVR group. Interferon-mediated graft dysfunction was observed in 4 cases (33.3%) in the TVR group and 3 cases (33.3%) in the SVR group, respectively. The cumulative viral clearance rates in triple (n = 21) and dual (n = 105) therapy were 95.0% and 18.1% at 12 weeks, and 95.0% and 40.0%, respectively, at 24 weeks (P < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Although careful monitoring for possible adverse events is required during treatment, triple therapy with the use of direct-acting agents are very effective in treating hepatitis C after liver transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Although the Milan criteria are widely accepted for liver transplantation (LT) in patients for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), they have not been fully evaluated for salvage LT in patients with recurrent HCC. We have previously reported outcomes of living-donor LT (LDLT) for HCC and identified 2 risk factors affecting recurrence-free survival (RFS): tumor size >5 cm and des-γ-carboxyl prothrombin (DCP) concentration >300 mAU/mL (Kyushu University criteria). This study was designed to clarify risk factors for tumor recurrence after LDLT in patients with recurrent HCC. METHODS: Outcomes in 114 patients who underwent LDLT for recurrent HCC were analyzed retrospectively. RFS rates after LDLT were calculated, and risk factors for tumor recurrence were identified. RESULTS: The 1-, 3-, and 5-year RFS rates after LDLT were 90.6%, 80.4%, and 78.8%, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that tumor recurrence was associated with alpha-fetoprotein concentration ≥ 300 ng/mL, DCP concentration ≥ 300 mAU/mL, tumor number ≥ 4, tumor size ≥ 5 cm, transarterial chemotherapy before LDLT, duration of last treatment of HCC to LDLT <3 months, bilobar distribution, exceeding Milan criteria, exceeding Kyushu University criteria, poor differentiation, and histologic vascular invasion. Multivariate analysis showed that DCP ≥ 300 mAU/mL (P = .03) and duration from last treatment to LDLT <3 months (P = .01) were independent predictors of RFS. CONCLUSIONS: DCP concentration and time between last treatment and LDLT are prognostic of RFS in patients undergoing LDLT for HCC.

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVES: There are ethnic differences in the distribution of abdominal obesity associated with metabolic disorders. In Japan, the appropriate reference values for abdominal obesity have not been established in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), although there are a number of studies in Western countries. This study evaluates the associations between visceral fat area (VFA), waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI), to examine cutoffs and estimate the error for WC and BMI equivalent to 100 cm(2) VFA in Japanese men with SCI. SETTING: National Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities, Japan. METHODS: Seventy-four men (aged 45.6 (s.d. 14.3) years) participated in the study. VFA was quantified using computed tomography at the level of the umbilicus, and associations were determined using nonlinear regression analysis. The error of the estimates from the regression equation was assessed using a Bland-Altman plot. RESULTS: The mean VFA was 101.2 (s.d. 53.0) cm(2) and 32 subjects had a VFA ⩾100 cm(2). The cutoffs for a VFA of 100 cm(2) were WC, 81.3 cm and BMI, 22.5 kg m(-2). The relationship between the estimated and actual values showed that the error increased as VFA increased, which resulted in a negative proportional bias. CONCLUSION: The suggested cutoff for Japanese men with SCI is a VFA of 100 cm(2), which is lower than that in the healthy able-bodied population for both WC and BMI. Further investigation is needed to determine the reference value for estimating SCI-specific VF accumulation.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Few studies to date have investigated the causes of late graft mortality after living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-five LDLTs for PBC were retrospectively reviewed. Factors prognostic of graft survival after LDLT were investigated, and histologic findings in patients with late graft loss were assessed. RESULTS: The 1-, 5-, and 10-year cumulative graft survival rates were 85.1%, 82.5%, and 66.9%, respectively. Multivariate Cox regression analysis found that male donor and ≥ 4 HLA mismatches were independently associated with poor graft survival. Among the 13 grafts lost, 5 were lost >1 year after LDLT, including 1 each due to chronic rejection, veno-occlusive disease, and obliterative portal venopathy, and 2 to other causes. Pathologic reviews of the serial biopsy specimens and explanted grafts from these 5 patients, with graft rejections from "chronic immune-mediated reaction syndrome," showed reciprocal changes over time. No patient died of recurrent PBC. CONCLUSIONS: Male donor and ≥ 4 HLA mismatches were independent factors associated with poor graft survival. Late graft mortality after LDLT for PBC in some patients was due to chronic immune-mediated reaction syndrome, including chronic rejection, veno-occlusive disease, and obliterative portal venopathy, but not to recurrent PBC.
