ABSTRACT

In an epoch where digital innovation is redefining the medical landscape, electronic health records (EHRs) stand out as a pivotal transformative force. Urogynecology, a discipline anchored in intricate patient histories and meticulous follow-ups, is on the brink of profound transformation due to these digital strides. While EHRs have unified patient data, challenges related to data privacy, interoperability, and access persist. In response, we present Pelvic Health Place (PHPlace) - a multilingual, patient-centric application. Purposefully designed to bolster patient engagement, PHPlace provides clinicians with essential pre-consultation insights, streamlines the consent process, vividly delineates surgical pathways, and assures comprehensive long-term monitoring. This platform also establishes a foundation for global data amalgamation, promising to invigorate research and potentially harness artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. With AI integration, we anticipate a more tailored treatment approach and enriched patient education, signaling a pivotal shift in urogynecology and emphasizing the imperative for ongoing academic inquiry.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, changing demographics, and evolving healthcare needs, the landscape of health services has been undergoing a profound transformation. Innovation has emerged as a central force driving change in the healthcare sector, as stakeholders across the globe strive to enhance the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of healthcare services. OBJECTIVE: Within this dynamic context, this systematic literature review explored the barriers and driving forces behind successful health service innovation. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic literature review was conducted using the Griffith University Library search engine and databases that included PubMed, ProQuest, Web of Science, Scopus, and CINHAL. To achieve the study goal, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and the associated PRISMA checklist guided the review and reporting method. RESULTS: Findings from this review identified a need for a universal definition of health innovation that encompasses the unique complexities and challenges within this context. In our comprehensive analysis of healthcare innovation, we have uncovered pivotal findings that underscore the indispensable nature of a well-structured framework. CONCLUSIONS: To succeed in fostering innovation within the health and social care sectors, it is imperative to establish an overarching organisational culture that meticulously addresses the following key components: team challenges; communication and collaboration; governance goals and authentic leadership, environmental engagement; and innovation endurance. Through systematic analysis of existing literature, this review offers a definition of health innovation, covering its conceptual foundations, determinants, and barriers, and provides a framework for creating an innovative culture.

ABSTRACT

Today, the topic of digitalization, the introduction of innovations based on Big Data, the complexity of technologies due to the introduction of artificial intelligence in medicine and healthcare is one of the most relevant in this industry, undoubtedly contributing to its rapid development. As a result of this development, there is a huge number of services and applications. Internet resources, not only for health tracking (more than 3,500 applications are available by the end of 2023), but also the development of diagnostic resources, telemedicine, etc. Quite quickly, it was the pandemic and its consequences that changed the format of interaction between doctors, communication in the community of doctors, and their interaction with patients. Saving time when making an appointment with a doctor, visiting him, constant monitoring of the condition of patients, becoming better and more multidirectional day by day, make it possible to provide timely, relevant care to more people. The use of artificial intelligence technologies and digital solutions in the field of Russian healthcare opens up great prospects for both doctors and patients, as well as for many government agencies, since the development of regulatory and legal regulation and state control and management of innovations in the field of medicine and healthcare is important. An important factor is that not only government programs for the development of healthcare, but also investments are extremely important for the development of digital medicine.

ABSTRACT

Three-dimensional printing (3D printing) or "additive manufacturing" first came to prominence in the field of engineering, in particular in the transport sector where the value of its fast and accurate prototyping and manufacture of spare parts was quickly recognised. However, over the last ten years, this revolutionary technology has disrupted established manufacture in an increasingly diverse range of technical areas. Perhaps the most unexpected of these is pharmaceuticals - not merely the manufacture of products such as surgically inserted implants, but also of dosage formulations themselves - now available in all manner of printed delivery forms and vehicles and showing promising control of release properties though 3D printing process choices. This review will provide an overview of how 3D printing technology has developed and expanded across technological boundaries during the past decade, with a closer look at the current opportunities and barriers to its widespread adoption, particularly in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors. Special attention has been paid to patents as a boost and barrier to the expansion of 3D printing in the medical and pharmaceutical sector, with a focus on the patent literature.

ABSTRACT

Corporate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance reflects the alignment of firms with national strategies and macroeconomic development principles, and serves as a crucial foundation for achieving sustainable development. Investigating the factors driving corporate ESG performance has significant theoretical and practical implications. This study utilizes data from Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies in China from 2010 to 2022 and theoretically analyzes and empirically tests the effects and mechanisms of executives' green experience on overall ESG performance and performance on each element of ESG. The results indicate that executives' green experience enhances the efficiency of corporate green patent innovation, thereby improving environmental performance. In addition, green experiences foster environmental investment and charitable donations, leading to better social performance. Executives with green experience also attract green investors and analysts' attention, thereby improving corporate governance and ultimately positively affecting overall corporate ESG performance. The robustness of these findings is confirmed through alternative variable measurements, Propensity Score Matching(PSM) Tests, Entropy Balancing Tests, Instrumental Variable Tests, and controlling for the impact of significant public health events. Further analysis revealed that the positive effects of executives' green experiences on corporate ESG performance are more pronounced in non-heavily polluting corporations, non-state-owned corporations, and firms where executives have higher power. This study enriches research on the consequences of executives' green experiences and the determinants of corporate ESG performance, extending the boundaries of how executive characteristics influence micro-level corporate outcomes. It also provides valuable references for regulatory bodies promoting ESG practices and decision-making by capital market participants.

PURPOSE: This study aims to illuminate the enduring contributions of underrepresented pioneers in radiology, emphasizing their resilience, innovations, and the significant barriers they overcame. By weaving their achievements into the broader narrative of medical science, this research highlights the critical role of diversity and progress in the evolution of radiology. HISTORICAL EXPLORATION: This narrative review chronicles the significant contributions of underrepresented radiologists from the early 20th century to the present. By synthesizing historical data, biographical sketches, and contemporary medical literature, we highlight the pivotal roles these pioneers have played in advancing radiology. Their groundbreaking work not only enhanced medical imaging technologies and practices but also championed the cause of diversity and inclusion within the field. These stories of perseverance and innovation underscore the ongoing need for an inclusive approach in the medical community, reflecting on how diversity has shaped and will continue to influence the evolution of radiology. FINDINGS AND CONCLUSION: The study identifies several pivotal figures, such as Marcus F. Wheatland, the first known African American radiologist, and Ivy O. Roach Brooks, the first woman to lead a radiology department at a major U.S. hospital. It explores their wide-ranging contributions from clinical practice and education to leadership and advocacy for diversity within the medical profession. The legacies of these radiologists illuminate not just their individual accomplishments but also reflect the broader struggle for equality and representation in the medical field. Their determination and excellence have paved the way for future generations, significantly enhancing the inclusivity and diversity of the radiology field. CLINICAL RELEVANCE AND APPLICATION: Understanding the contributions of these underrepresented radiologists enriches the field's perspective on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Highlighting these pioneers underscores the importance of mentorship, representation, and advocacy in creating an environment where all talented individuals can thrive. Insights from this historical analysis are crucial for shaping future policies and practices in radiology and medical education, ensuring the continuation of these trailblazers' inspiring legacy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Telepsychiatry (TP), a live video meeting, has been implemented in many contexts and settings. It has a distinct advantage in the psychiatric emergency department (ED) setting, as it expedites expert assessments for psychiatric patients. However, limited knowledge exits for TP's effectiveness in the ED setting, as well as the process of implementing TP in this setting. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to review the existing evidence for the administrative and clinical outcomes for TP in the ED setting and to identify the barriers and facilitators to implementing TP in this setting. METHODS: The scoping review was conducted according to the guidelines for the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews). Three electronic databases were examined: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. The databases were searched from January 2013 to April 2023 for papers and their bibliography. A total of 2816 potentially relevant papers were retrieved from the initial search. Studies were screened and selected independently by 2 authors. RESULTS: A total of 11 articles were included. Ten papers reported on administrative and clinical outcomes of TP use in the ED setting and 1 on the barriers and facilitators of its implementation. TP is used in urban and rural areas and for settings with and with no on-site psychiatric services. Evidence shows that TP reduced waiting time for psychiatric evaluation, but in some studies, it was associated with prolonged total length of stay in the ED compared with in-person evaluation. Findings indicate lower admission rates in patients assessed with TP in the ED. Limited data were reported for TP costs, its use for involuntary commitment evaluations, and its use for particular subgroups of patients (eg, those with a particular diagnosis). A single paper examined TP implementation process in the ED, which explored the barriers and facilitators for implementation among patients and staff in a rural setting. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the extant studies, TP seems to be generally feasible and acceptable to key stakeholders. However, this review detected a gap in the literature regarding TP's effectiveness and implementation process in the ED setting. Specific attention should be paid to the examination of this service for specific groups of patients, as well as its use to enable assessments for possible involuntary commitment.

ABSTRACT

Businesses embracing green innovation can encourage high-quality green economic development in addition to reducing emissions. In this paper, we use the Difference-in-Differences (DID) to investigate the influence of green investor behavior on the green innovation of companies, using the first-ever green investor investment in a company as a quasi-natural experiment. According to research, green investors have the power to accelerate corporate green innovation greatly. Three key strategies that green investors can use to do this include raising institutional investment levels, enhancing the green perception of executives, and bringing in top talent. Heterogeneity analysis shows that non-high-polluting, big, and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) are more likely to benefit from green investors' green innovation effects. Further analysis reveals that (ⅰ) green investors' influence on an enterprise's level of green innovation can help it improve its ESG ratings; (ii) green investors can encourage green innovation in source control but have little effect on green innovation in end-of-pipe treatment; (ⅲ) green investors can support both non-green and green innovation in enterprises, but have a greater influence on green innovation. This study strengthens the micro relationship between green investors and corporate green innovation. It also supports the theoretical underpinnings of corporate green innovation, which is significant for advancing green innovation, environmental protection, and high-quality economic development in emerging economies.

ABSTRACT

Chemical innovation plays a key role to support the agrifood system with the final goal to deliver secure, healthy food for a growing population. The underlying link between chemical innovation, agrifood system and the 2030 sustainable agenda may have received less attention than it deserves. Here we provide an overview of the agrifood system and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), alongside distinct aspects of the innovation with a focus on the Swiss reality are presented. Finally, the critical and unspoken role of soil for a wide range of SDGs is underlined. Some major axes on how chemical research and technologies can set new pathway to innovate through soil are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Total factor productivity is an important symbol of high-quality economic development. At present, the question of whether the digital economy can infuse fresh impetus into enhancing total factor productivity has emerged as a prominent concern in China. This paper constructs a new undesirable output to measure comprehensive total factor productivity (CTFP) with the slack-based measure (SBM) undesirable Malmquist-Luenberger index by using 2011-2020 Chinese provincial panel data. Then, this paper explores the impact of the digital economy (DIG) on CTFP with a fixed effects (FE) panel model and a mediating effect model. The results show that CTFP increases by an average of 3.9%, technical efficiency contributes -1.1%, and the contribution rate of technological progress is 5.0%. Technological progress is the main source of CTFP growth. The empirical findings show that the DIG has a positive and significant impact on CTFP. This paper conducts various robustness tests, and the results remain consistent with the previous conclusion. Moreover, mechanism tests suggest that the promoting effect of the DIG on CTFP can be attributed to three main effects: technological innovation, the factor endowment structure and the educational level. Furthermore, the results of heterogeneity analysis demonstrate that the promoting effect of the DIG on CTFP exists in China's eastern, central and western regions. The findings of this research can serve as a valuable reference for informing decision-making processes related to environmental governance and high-quality economic development in China.

ABSTRACT

Since the 20th century, Red Culture has served as a significant informal institution guiding revolutionary trajectory and developmental course. However, integrating Red Culture into contemporary corporate management and leveraging its constructive influence within today's market-driven economy necessitates comprehensive exploration and thoughtful consideration. This study aims to explore the potential influence of Red Culture on contemporary innovation. Empirical findings reveal substantial and affirmative effects of Red Culture on corporate innovation. Specifically, a heightened Red Culture ambiance correlates with a marked increase in both innovation input and output within corporate. Further investigation underscores Red Culture's pivotal governance role in mitigating strategic manipulation of innovation and research and development practices, especially within the overarching framework of innovation-driven strategies. Moreover, Red Culture synergizes with formal innovation incentive mechanisms, jointly fostering corporate innovation. This study provides micro-level empirical evidence that elucidates the impact of Red Culture on corporate innovation. Additionally, it furnishes valuable policy insights for the practical implementation and enhancement of pertinent Red Culture initiative.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Global interest is growing in new value-based models of financing, delivering, and paying for health care services that could produce higher-quality and lower cost outcomes for patients and for society. However, research indicates evidence gaps in knowledge related to alternative payment models (APMs) in early experimentation phases or those contracted between private insurers and their health care provider-partners. The aim of this research was to understand and update the literature related to learning how industry experts design and implement APMs, including specific elements of their models and their choice of stakeholders to be involved in the design and contractual details. Methods: A literature review was conducted to guide the research focus and to select themes. The sample was selected using snowball sampling to identify subject matter experts (SMEs). Researchers conducted 16 semi-structured interviews with SMEs in the US, the Netherlands, and Germany in September and October 2021. Interviews were transcribed and using Braun and Clarke's six-phase approach to thematic analysis, researchers independently read, reviewed, and coded participants' responses related to APM design and implementation and subsequently reviewed each other's codes and themes for consistency. Results: Participants represented diverse perspectives of the payer, provider, consulting, and government areas of the health care sector. We found design considerations had five overarching themes: (1) population and scope of care and services, (2) benchmarking, metrics, data, and technology; (3) finance, APM type, risk adjustment, incentives, and influencing provider behavior, (4) provider partnerships and the role of physicians, and (5) leadership and regulatory issues. Discussion: This study confirmed several of the core components of APM model designs and implementations found in the literature and brought insights on additional aspects not previously emphasized, particularly the role of physicians (especially in leadership) and practice transformation/care processes necessary for providers to thrive under APM models. Importantly, researchers found significant concerns relevant for policymakers about regulations relating to health data sharing, rigid price-setting, and inter-organizational data communication that greatly inhibit the ability to experiment with APMs and those models' abilities to succeed long-term.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study aims to compare three commonly used energy devices for dissection during Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) lobectomy: monopolar hook, advanced bipolar, and ultrasonic device, in terms of duration of the surgical procedure and clinical intra- and post-operative outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective single-center study, 75 patients undergoing VATS lobectomy for non-small cell lung cancer between January 2022 and May 2023 were enrolled and divided into 3 groups based on the device used during the surgical procedure (Group 1: Ultrasonic Device, Group 2: Advanced Bipolar, Group 3: Monopolar Hook). The duration of the surgical procedure, daily pleural fluid production, post-operative pain, length of hospital stay, and occurrence of post-operative complications were compared for each group. In a subgroup of 20 patients (10 from Group 1 and 10 from Group 3), concentrations of inflammatory cytokines in pleural fluid at 3 h and 48 h post-surgery were analyzed. RESULTS: Pleural fluid production on the first and second post-operative days was significantly lower in patients treated with the Ultrasonic device compared to the other two groups (p < 0.001). The duration of the surgical procedure was significantly shorter when using the Ultrasonic device (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in length of hospital stay (p = 0.975), pain on the first and second post-operative days (p = 0.147 and p = 0.755, respectively), and blood hemoglobin levels on the first post-operative day (p = 0.709) and at discharge (p = 0.795). No differences were observed in terms of post-operative complications, although the incidence of post-operative cardiac arrhythmias was borderline significant (p = 0.096), with no cases of arrhythmias recorded in Group 1. IL-10 levels in pleural fluid of patients in Group 3 peaked at 3 h post-surgery, with a significant reduction at 48 h (p = 0.459). DISCUSSION: The use of the ultrasonic device during VATS lobectomy may reduce pleural fluid production and shorten the duration of the surgical procedure compared to using a monopolar hook or advanced bipolar device. The choice of energy device may influence the local inflammatory response, although further studies are needed to confirm these results.

ABSTRACT

Loss aversion is a psychological construct defined as a tendency to value potential losses more than gains in a situation that requires decision-making. The Loss Aversion Scale (LAS, eight items) measures an individual's loss aversion to various situations. However, the generalization of its psychometric properties to different population groups is unknown. This study aimed to validate the LAS instrument for use among Spanish university adults. To this end, two studies were conducted: a content validity study calculating the substantive validity (N = 24) of the instrument's translation from original English to Spanish and a study of internal structure and association (N = 766) among Spanish university men and women aged 18-35. The analyses performed for each sample indicated that the instrument had adequate validity and reliability values as a one-dimensional measure; however, items 5 and 8 had to be removed. Their scores indicated moderate-magnitude correlations with social desirability. This article debates the study's limitations, practical implications, and future lines of research based on the results. The conclusion is that the Loss Aversion Scale instrument suits general Spanish population samples and requires probable methodological control concerning social desirability.

ABSTRACT

Regional integration plays an important role in dicarbon reduction and sustainability development. Based on dynamic panel model and spatial econometric model, this study analyzes the impact of market integration (MI) on industrial green transformation (IGT). The study finds that: (1) MI has a nonlinear relationship with the IGT. With the increasing of MI degree, the IGT shows the characteristic of first rising and then declining. (2) MI plays a role in the IGT mainly through industrial agglomeration, resource mismatch and green technological progress, respectively. (3) The impact of MI on IGT exhibits spatial heterogeneity. Although MI significantly promotes IGT in core cities, its impact on the IGT in peripheral cities is not significant. (4) The IGT has spatial spillover effect, and the improvement of MI degree in adjacent regions can also promote the IGT in the cities.

Introduction: The national volume-based drug procurement policy initiated in China since 2018 represents a significant reform in China's pharmaceutical distribution system. It has largely squeezed out the price bubble of low-end generic drugs, making competition in the pharmaceutical sales segment more intense and transparent. This policy intervenes in the distribution link of the pharmaceutical industry by intensifying market competition, thereby enhancing the innovation willingness and R&D capabilities of pharmaceutical companies. Methods: Taking the national volume-based drug procurement policy as the policy shock, we used the multi-period difference-in-difference method to study the impact of the policy on innovation input, innovation output quantity and innovation output quality of listed pharmaceutical companies and its impact mechanism. Results: We found that the volume-based policy can significantly promote the pharmaceutical companies' innovation input and the innovation output quality, but significantly reduced the innovation output quantity. For innovative and generic drug companies, this policy has limited impact on innovative drug companies, but force generic drug companies to pay more attention to cost control and market positioning, and the quality and cost-effectiveness of R&D output to ensure competitiveness in the market. For bid-winning and non-winning companies, the policy has a greater innovation incentive for non-winning companies than winning companies, by imposing greater survival pressure on non-winning companies, forcing them to increase R&D investment intensity and adopt the innovation strategy of preferring quality to quantity. Discussion: The results show that the national volume-based drug procurement policy should be expanded to lower drug prices and lighten the medical burden on patients, with enhanced quality and safety supervision. Additionally, it suggests cautious application of such policies to innovative and high-end generic drugs to encourage continued pharmaceutical innovation and industry advancement.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Innovation for reforming health and social care is high on the policy agenda in the United Kingdom in response to the growing needs of an ageing population. However, information about new innovations of care being implemented is sparse. METHODS: We mapped innovations for people in later life in two regions, North East England and South East Scotland. Data collection included discussions with stakeholders (n = 51), semi-structured interviews (n = 14) and website searches that focused on technology, evaluation and health inequalities. We analysed qualitative data using framework and thematic analyses. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively. RESULTS: One hundred eleven innovations were identified across the two regions. Interviewees reported a wide range of technologies that had been rapidly introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic and many remained in use. Digital exclusion of certain groups of older people was an ongoing concern. Innovations fell into two groups; system-level ones that aimed to alleviate systems pressures such as preventing hospital (re)admissions, and patient-level ones which sought to enhance health and wellbeing directly. Interviewees were aware of the importance of health inequalities but lacked data to monitor the impact of innovations on these, and evaluation was challenging due to lack of time, training, and support. Quantitative findings revealed that two thirds of innovations (n = 74, 67%) primarily focused on the system level, whilst a third (n = 37, 33%) primarily focused on the patient-level. Overall, over half (n = 65, 59%) of innovations involved technologies although relatively few (n = 12, 11%) utilised advanced technologies. Very few (n = 16, 14%) focused on reducing health inequalities, and only a minority of innovations (n = 43, 39%) had undergone evaluation (most of which were conducted by the service providers themselves). CONCLUSIONS: We found a wide range of innovative care services being developed for people in later life, yet alignment with key policy priorities, such as addressing health inequalities, was limited. There was a strong focus on technology, with little consideration for the potential to widen the health inequality gap. The absence of robust evaluation was also a concern as most innovations were implemented without support to monitor effectiveness and/or without plans for sustainability and spread.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Promoting enterprises' digital transformation is fundamental to implementing the digital China strategy and realizing high-quality development. Methods: Taking China's A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2021 as a research sample, this study examines the impact of sharing auditors with customers on the digital transformation of suppliers. Results: The results show that sharing auditors with customers can promote suppliers' digital transformation, and this promotion effect is stronger among suppliers with weaker bargaining power, lower media attention, and higher auditor industry expertise. In terms of the mechanism of action, sharing auditors with customers can help strengthen the supplier's supervision, alleviate suppliers' financing constraints, and thus facilitate their digital transformation. Further research finds that when suppliers share auditors with their customers, suppliers' digital transformation helps promote innovation. Discussion: The research conclusion provides effective empirical evidence for alleviating the dilemma of digital transformation of enterprises.
