ABSTRACT

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to the education system, leading to changes in student academic performance and mental health. The aim of this study was to evaluate variables relating to changes in academic performance and mental health during the pandemic. Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study from 28 February 2022 to 13 April 2022, during the free SARS-CoV-2 screening campaign offered by Sapienza University of Rome. A structured questionnaire was constructed to explore the decline in academic performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS), a validated self-reporting mental health screener of dysfunctional anxiety associated with the coronavirus crisis, was used. Results: A sample of 1,134 students was enrolled. A total of 25.4% of the participants reported a decline in academic performance. In addition, Coronavirus Anxiety Scale scores revealed that 133 (11.5%) students had a dysfunctional anxiety problem due to COVID-19. A multivariable logistic regression model showed that being a senior student (aOR: 0.70 95% CI: 0.52-0.96) and having good financial status (aOR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.47-0.88) decrease the likelihood of a decline in academic performance, while not being Italian (aOR: 2.12, 95% CI: 1.29-3.48), having felt the need for psychological support (aOR: 2.58, 95% CI: 1.87-3.55) and being enrolled in a science/technology faculty (aOR: 1.81, 95% CI: 1.27-2.57) were more likely to result in a decline in academic performance. Conclusion: Our results show that the pandemic has affected academic performance. The COVID-19 emergency highlighted the importance of considering mental health and economic status in policymaking to effectively support students.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: An aging population means health services are dealing with increasing numbers of older adults, placing challenges on health care systems. Research demonstrates many students who are in the health sciences carry negative views toward older adults, affecting their choice to work with older adults. This study evaluated whether course curriculum via an experiential learning activity that exposed Pre-Medicine students to older adults in retirement villages, improves attitudes to working with older adults upon graduation. METHODS: A survey using validated tools namely Australian Aging Sematic Differential (AASD); Relating to Older People (ROPE): Reactions to Aging Questionnaire (RAQ); Geriatric Attitudes Scale (GAS) was implemented. Thematic analysis to evaluate students' reflective essays post placement was conducted (n = 11). RESULTS: There were significant positive shifts in attitudes toward older adults and aging (AASD/GAS), along with improvements in students' self-perceptions of aging supported by qualitative analysis. DISCUSSION: The results support the need for educational interventions like the RV-ELJ model for reducing ageism and encouraging a mind-set shift toward working with older adults. It is important to expose students to settings where older adults live independently to build rapport and breakdown prejudices and stereotypes. This is likely to encourage interest in working with older adults.

ABSTRACT

The present study sought to identify profiles of 753 emerging adults (62.5% females) with different levels of hostile attribution bias (HAB) and jealousy dimensions (i.e., cognitive, emotional, behavioral) and examined differences in their levels of romantic relational aggression (RoRAgg) across profiles. Participants were recruited from Greek universities and completed and online survey. Using a person-centered approach, Latent Profile Analysis indicated the presence of three profiles of participants: a) jealous and hostile intent attributers who had high scores on jealousy dimensions and HAB, b) low risk who scored low on jealousy and HAB, and c) emotionally jealous and moderate hostile intent attributers with moderate cognitive and behavioral jealousy as well as HAB, and high emotional jealousy. As predicted, jealous and hostile intent attributers scored higher on RoRAgg compared with emotionally jealous and moderate hostile intent attributers and low risk. The findings confirm previous research and are discussed in terms of their implications. Interventions targeting relational aggressor's hostile attributions, cognitive suspicions, and negative thoughts should be implemented to reduce RoRAgg.

Background: Mental disorders in university students are a growing attention problem in the international community due to their high prevalence and serious consequences. One possible reason is university students' difficulties in coping with stress. Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a transdiagnostic process that, when combined with stress, can lead to the development of various disorders. We aim to determine the effect of stress and RNT on predicting various mental health syndromes in university students across 7 days. Method: Prospective observational study using Momentary Ecological Assessment (EMA) with the OURMIND Mobile App. On day one, 238 university students responded to the SCL-90R questionnaire for symptoms of depression, anxiety, hostility, obsession, psychoticism, paranoia, somatization, and interpersonal sensitivity; RNT styles questionnaires, RRS for rumination and negative reflection, PSWQ for worry; SISCO-II for term academic stress, and sociodemographic. EMA consisted of five assessments a day for 6 days; each time, the students answered items about academic and non-academic stress (EMA-stress), reactive RNT duration and intrusiveness (EMA-RNT process), and reactive RNT rumination, reflection, and worry (EMA-RNT content). On day eight, symptoms were re-assessed. Seven hierarchical stepwise linear regression models were used to test the predictive power of the study variables in the development of SCL-90R symptoms. Results: When comparing models, adding baseline symptoms increased the models' predictive power in all symptom groups. In most cases, including EMA-stress generated greater predictive power, except for paranoia and interpersonal sensitivity. Adding the EMA-RNT process increased the prediction of paranoia and obsessive symptoms; for hostility symptoms, RNT styles increased predictive power. For the final regression models, considering the initial symptoms, the EMA-RNT process predicted the progression of symptoms in six out of eight groups, while EMA-non-academic stress predicted the remaining two. Additionally, living with other relatives or friends was a predictor of depressive symptoms. Discussion: The stress of university life impacts the development of psychiatric symptoms in university students. These results provide evidence of RNT as a transdiagnostic process in several syndromic groups. Universal preventive programs should consider the impact of academic and non-academic stress on university students' mental health. Targeting RNT would also benefit selective preventive interventions.

ABSTRACT

There are well-documented shortages of healthcare providers in rural and remote communities worldwide, and these shortages correlate with inequitable health outcomes for rural peoples. Despite a wide array of efforts to remedy the issue, these shortages persist to this day. The Healthcare Traveling Roadshow (HCTRS) is a grassroots initiative that began in 2010 to help address the shortage of healthcare providers in rural communities throughout British Columbia. Since its inception, the HCTRS has been predicated on three evidence-based guiding principles which have been shown to markedly increase the rate at which healthcare students choose to practice rurally. These principles are: (1) to showcase healthcare careers as viable and realistic options for rural youth (high school students) using interactive stations and near-peer teaching; (2) to expose healthcare students to rural communities and showcase them as a potential opportunity for their future practice; and (3) to provide a unique interprofessional experience to healthcare students from diverse healthcare careers and backgrounds. Through the synergy of these three principles the HCTRS aims to increase the longitudinal recruitment and retention of healthcare workers in underserved rural communities. This paper will share our experience from 15 years of running this initiative, for those hoping to implement similar programs in other areas of the world.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of technology-facilitated sexual harassment (TFSH) and its relationships to adverse mental health issues among young adult female students in Bangladesh. METHODS: We collected data for this cross-sectional study from July to September 2022 from 455 female students at a large university in Bangladesh. The prevalence of TFSH, self-reported distress, stress, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts was assessed. Multivariable logistic regressions were used to assess the identified relationships. RESULTS: This study found that nearly half of the respondents (46.1%) reported having experienced TFSH. The prevalence of suicidal thoughts, moderate to severe distress, stress, anxiety, and depression was 34.9%, 47.7%, 78.2%, 36.9%, and 59.8%, respectively. Results also reported that, compared to the respondents who did not experience TFSH, those who experienced it were more likely to report adverse mental health issues with higher odds. For example, after controlling for sociodemographic variables, the odds of moderate to severe distress (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 3.70; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.36-5.78), stress (AOR: 2.09; 95% CI: 1.25-3.49), anxiety (AOR: 3.80; 95% CI: 2.40-6.03), depression (AOR: 3.32; 95% CI: 2.12-5.18), and having suicidal thoughts (AOR: 4.86; 95% CI: 2.29-7.89) were higher among female students experiencing TFSH than those who did not experience it. CONCLUSIONS: TFSH harassment among young adult female students is common and significantly associated with different adverse mental health issues. Attempts at primary intervention for improving mental health status are required to take TFSH into consideration.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) in hemodialysis (HD) patients has a significant social impact due to its prevalence, poor response to standard therapy and dismal prognosis. Rheopheresis is indicated by guidelines for PAD treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five HD patients affected by PAD stage IV Lerichè-Fontaine and ischemic ulcer 1C or 2C according to the University of Texas Wound Classification System (UTWCS), without amelioration after traditional medical therapy and/or revascularization, were selected and underwent 12 Rheopheresis sessions in 10 weeks. Improvements in pain symptoms using Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), healing ulcers and laboratory hemorheological parameters have been evaluated. RESULTS: A clinically and statistically significant mean value reduction and of relative percentage differences between estimated marginal means (Δ), calculated at each visits, of NRS was observed, with a maximum value (-48.5%) between the first and last visit. At the end of the treatment period 14.3% of ulcers were completely healed, 46.4% downgraded, 53.6% were stable. Overall, no ulcers upgraded. A statistically significant reduction of the Δ, between the first and last visit, for fibrinogen (-16%) was also observed. CONCLUSION: Rheopheresis reduced overall painful symptoms; data suggest that it could heal or improve ulcers and hemorheological laboratory parameters in HD patients with PAD and ischemic ulcers resistant to standard therapies.

ABSTRACT

Positive and inclusive mentoring of undergraduate research students, particularly of students from historically underrepresented groups is critical. The Advancing Inclusive Mentoring (AIM) program was developed to share inclusive mentoring practices with mentors at undergraduate-focused campuses and was assessed across five minority-serving universities. Self-ratings of mentorship skill as very- and exceptionally developed increased by 58% after AIM completion, and 93% of participants indicated they were likely to change their mentoring following AIM. While 93% of mentors rated the AIM program as beneficial, and 88% found most or all six modules pertinent to their mentoring, campus variations existed in perceived benefit (87%-100%) and pertinence (80-97%). These results suggest that AIM is effective training for mentors of undergraduate researchers, including those from historically underrepresented groups.

Hyb-blended learning is a novel method that can serve as a substitute for conventional classroom-based learning activities, demonstrating effectiveness in both pandemics like COVID-19 and other crises, as well as in non-pandemic situations. The successful application of this method in the field of education depends on the users' intentions to adopt it. Therefore, this study aims to understand the behavioral intentions of teachers and students at Bangladeshi universities toward the adoption of the hyb-blended learning method. A correlational, cross-sectional, and sample survey-based research design was employed. Two structured questionnaires, one for teachers and one for students, were used to collect data from 171 teachers and 713 students from 11 public and 8 private universities in Bangladesh. The conceptual model of the study was developed on the theoretical underpinnings of the "Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT)." The study used a structural equation modeling technique to test the hypotheses. The results of the study revealed that the proposed learning method would increase teaching and learning opportunities for both teachers and students in Bangladeshi universities. They would adopt this method without relying on the experiences of others or what others think or say. Unlike teachers, the study also found that students would use it if they received support and influence from friends, fellow students, university authorities, and other external factors. However, their intentions toward adopting this method depend on the availability of resources and support for adopting it, as well as adequate and necessary understanding and talent to use it effectively. Results also revealed that they would adopt the method if it was found to be simple to use. The study has a notable practical implication, as it has proposed an alternative learning and teaching method that would be effective in Bangladeshi universities during the COVID-19 pandemic or other crises and in non-pandemic situations as well.

This study aimed to verify the relationship between changes in thigh muscle-localized bioelectrical impedance analysis (ML-BIA) parameters and performance in a multiple-set exercise. The sample consisted of 30 female university students (22.1 ± 3.2 years). The ML-BIA parameters, including localized muscle resistance (ML-R), reactance (ML-Xc), and phase angle (ML-AngF), were evaluated using a tetrapolar bioelectric impedance device operating at a frequency of 50 KHz. The multiple sets protocol was performed with an isokinetic dynamometer. For body composition, total and leg lean soft tissue (LST) were evaluated using dual X-ray absortiometry. Student's t-test for paired samples was used to compare the ML-BIA parameters and thigh circumference pre and postexercise. Linear regression analysis was performed to verify the ∆ML-PhA as a predictor of peak torque for the three sets alone while controlling for total and leg LST. There were differences in the ML-R (∆ = 0.02 ± 1.45 Ω; p = 0.001; and E.S = 0.19), ML-Xc (∆ = 2.90 ± 4.12 Ω; p = 0.043; and E.S = 0.36), and thigh circumference (∆ = 0.82 ± 0.60 cm; p < 0.001; and E.S = 0.16) pre- and post-multiple sets. ΔML-PhA was a predictor of performance in the first set (p = 0.002), regardless of total and leg LST. However, the ΔML-PhA lost its explanatory power in the other sets (second and third), and the variables that best explained performance were total and leg LST. The ML-BIA (ML-R and ML-Xc) parameters were sensitive and changed after the multiple sets protocol, and the ΔML-PhA was a predictor of performance in the first set regardless of the total and leg LST.

ABSTRACT

Nowadays, the medical COVID-19 emergency is ending worldwide, whereas there is an increasing need to understand the marks and the lessons learned from over two years of unprecedented changes in all life domains. Recent research has highlighted growing rates of psychological suffering among the general population as well as among university students, who were yet well-recognized as a vulnerable population even before the pandemic. The present work drives from university students' experience, and it aims to provide an overview of the key dimensions to take into account, in terms of main risks, changes, challenges, and resources, to develop updated tailored research and interventions promoting psychological health conditions in the current time within and beyond the educational context/university students' population. Implications for research and interventions are highlighted and discussed.

ABSTRACT

Lockdown restrictions and social distancing regulations enforced by governments worldwide to prevent COVID-19 transmission have caused momentous disruption to the global education sector. Educators and students across all institutions and levels had to suddenly adapt to a new reality where in-person teaching was replaced by hybrid or remote learning activities. This chapter aims to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on teaching, learning and assessment in higher education. It discusses the challenges presented by the shift to online teaching and the pedagogical strategies developed to foster student engagement and assess their progress in a remote learning setting. Moreover, this chapter explores the impact of the pandemic on wellbeing and mental health of students and academic staff. The last section draws on the lessons learned from the pandemic to identify areas of good practice that are likely to positively shape the post-pandemic higher education panorama.

BACKGROUND:  The public health concern posed by HIV in South Africa is significant, particularly among young adults aged 15-34 years. Within this age range, university students present a unique demographic, concurrently managing their HIV condition and academic pursuits, thus raising concerns about HIV management within university environments. Research into the experiences of South African university students living with HIV is relatively sparse. OBJECTIVES:  The study aimed to explore the HIV self-management perceptions and experiences of South African university students. METHOD:  The study employed a qualitative research approach grounded in the constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight (8) students living with HIV at a university in the Western Cape area in 2021. Data were analysed through thematic analysis. All ethical principles were adhered to, and trustworthiness was ensured. RESULTS:  Findings revealed that students utilised various strategies to manage their HIV condition, inclusive of maintaining a positive mindset, and adopting a healthy diet. They encountered obstacles such as experiencing HIV-related stigma, which frequently resulted in elevated stress levels. The potential role of peer support groups was also underscored, with students expressing a desire to participate in such groups to maintain their mental health. CONCLUSION:  Living with HIV is a challenging experience for university students, but self-management of the condition makes life easier for them.Contribution: These findings contribute to the understanding of HIV self-management perceptions and experiences of university students, and can inform the development of a comprehensive supportive structure that addresses their needs.

BACKGROUND:  Self-directed simulation learning (SSL) is a globally accepted teaching and learning strategy wherein student nurses take the initiative in diagnosing their learning needs, formulate learning goals, identify resources for learning, and implement relevant strategies in response to their learning needs. This autonomous learning strategy will assist student nurses in taking ownership of their learning. Consequently, student nurses exit the training programme to become lifelong learners, safe and competent professional nurses. OBJECTIVES:  This study aimed to explore and describe the experiences of student nurses' utilisation of SSL at a University in Gauteng and to make recommendation(s) to enhance the use of SSL. METHOD:  A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and contextual research design was used to uncover the student nurses' experiences with the use of SSL at a University. Nineteen participants were purposively sampled. Data collection was conducted through focus group interviews. Tesch's method of data analysis was used to analyse, organise and interpret data. RESULTS:  Theme: student nurses experience time constraints, which hinder their utilisation of SSL. Subthemes: (1) a compacted academic timetable, and (2) limited access to the clinical simulation laboratory for self-directed learning. CONCLUSION:  Time constraints hinder the utilisation of SSL, and this challenge threatens the acquisition of clinical skills and knowledge during the training of student nurses.Contribution: Evidence-based recommendations to enhance the utilisation of SSL at a University.

ABSTRACT

Adherence to the Mediterranean diet has decreased among university students in many countries. Cooking skills (CS) and food skills (FS) have been suggested as potential targets for reversing this decline. This study aims to determine CS and FS and to examine their relationship with adherence to the Mediterranean diet in young adults attending university in Türkiye. This cross-sectional study was conducted between March 2022 and April 2022 at Ondokuz Mayis University in Samsun, Türkiye, and included 859 university students (56.1% women; mean age 22.57 ± 2.75 years). Sociodemographic characteristics were collected. The CS and FS measure and the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS) were administered. The mean MEDAS, CS and FS scores were 4.77 ± 1.97, 59.10 ± 18.17 and 77.81 ± 22.27, respectively. Those with higher MEDAS scores (quartile three and quartile four-Q3 and Q4) had significantly higher CS scores than those with lower scores (Q1 and Q2), while those in the lowest quartile (Q1) had lower FS scores than all other quartiles (p < 0.001). Total scores of CS and FS positively, although weakly, correlated with MEDAS (r = 0.227 and r = 0.296; p < 0.001). Two separate models for CS and FS were analysed; along with access to kitchen facilities, CS and FS contributed the most variability, accounting for 8.9% and 11.8% of the variance in MEDAS, respectively (p < 0.001). This research indicates that higher CS and FS in university students are associated with higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet. It is also recommended that kitchen facilities be provided for them to practice these skills.

BACKGROUND: Dependency on screen viewing (SV) has reached unprecedented levels, and mental health issues are becoming a major public health concern. However, the associations between SV, including variations in purposes, devices, and timing, and mental health remain unclear. This study aims to provide insights into these associations among university students. METHODS: This analysis used baseline data from a longitudinal cohort study among first-year university students matriculating in the 2021-2022 academic year. Self-reported data on sociodemographics, health behaviors and mental health outcomes alongside anthropometric measurements were collected. Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression analyses were conducted. RESULTS: The average age of the 997 valid students was 20.2 years, with 59.6% being female and 41.4% male. Students spent 14.3 h daily on SV, with females reporting higher SV than males. Daily SV was predominant for study purposes (7.6 h/day). Computer usage was the highest (7.0 h/day), while TV usage was the lowest (1.7 h/day). Poor mental wellbeing was reported by 33.6% of students, while 13.9% experienced psychological distress. Compared to students with low total SV, those with high levels were more likely to have poor mental wellbeing [OR (95% CI): 1.40 (0.99, 1.98)] and psychological distress [1.56 (1.00, 2.44)]. High levels of recreational and study related SV were significantly associated with poor mental wellbeing [1.81 (1.27, 2.56)] and psychological distress [1.75 (1.11, 2.83)], respectively. Those with high levels of computer time were more likely to have poor mental wellbeing [1.44 (1.01, 2.06)], and high weekend day SV was associated with greater odds of psychological distress [2.16 (1.17, 4.06)]. CONCLUSIONS: SV among university students was high, as was the high prevalence of poor mental wellbeing and psychological distress. Greater SV was associated with poor mental wellbeing and psychological distress. Differences according to purpose of SV were noted. Although recreational SV was associated with poor mental wellbeing, study related SV was associated with psychological distress. Variations across different devices and timing were also noted. This highlights the need for further longitudinal research to understand the impact of SV on mental health and to guide interventions for promoting mental health of university students globally.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In an increasingly digital age, students rely heavily on web resources to access health information. However, evaluating the reliability and relevance of such information is crucial for informed decision-making. This study examines the importance of students' health information literacy skills (HILS) as mediators, particularly their ability to utilize web resources and successfully evaluate health information. OBJECTIVES: This research investigates the mediating role of students' HILS in the relationship between their utilization of web resources and their proficiency in evaluating health information. METHOD: An online survey was distributed to current students at a public university in Bangladesh as part of the data collection process for this study. Using Google Forms, the authors created a structured questionnaire. The survey was distributed through Messenger groups, Facebook pages and email invitations to reach the target audience effectively. The researchers thoroughly analysed the gathered data using structural equation modelling (SEM) techniques and SmartPLS-4 software to look for correlations between the variables. RESULT: The study revealed that among the 122 participants, a significant number (N = 47) accessed internet health information on an occasional basis, whereas 30 individuals reported using it infrequently. The data revealed that 58 individuals, accounting for 47.5% of the sample, possessed the necessary abilities to access and assess online health information. Additionally, 57 participants, representing 46.7% of the sample, demonstrated proficiency in conducting online health information searches. The measurement model demonstrated good convergent validity, as evidenced by composite reliability (CR) scores and Cronbach's ⍺ values over 0.700 and an average extracted variance (AVE) of 0.500. The structural model demonstrated R2 values exceeding 0.1, thus validating its dependable forecasting capability. Notable effects were seen, with f2 values of 0.335 and 0.317 for the challenges in accessing and evaluating health information (CAEHI) to health information evaluation (HIE) and CAEHI to HILS relationships, respectively. The mediation analysis found that HILS act as a mediator between types of web resources (TWRs) and HIE, with TWR having an indirect impact on HIE through HILS. DISCUSSION: The result supports all hypotheses. Therefore, it is evident that students' HILS mediate the relationship between utilization of web resources and their proficiency in evaluating health information. CONCLUSION: This study's findings could significantly impact instructional practices meant to raise students' health information literacy. This initiative seeks to enable students to make informed decisions about their health by providing them with the necessary tools to analyse and evaluate health-related information. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Research on health information literacy can assist patients and the general public by instructing them on how to assess trustworthy online health resources. Students gave insightful feedback that assisted in shaping the study and guaranteeing its relevancy. If they better comprehend health information literacy, patients and the general public can use web-based resources and critically evaluate health information more accurately.

ABSTRACT

Examining ways of reducing physical inactivity has been at the forefront of public health research. Moreover, valid and reliable scales are needed to objectively assess physical activity (PA) avoidance. Previous research has shown that experiencing weight stigma and physical appearance-related concerns are associated with physical inactivity. However, there is currently no Thai instrument that assesses physical inactivity in relation to weight stigma. Therefore, the present study examined the psychometric properties of the Thai version of the Tendency to Avoid Physical Activity and Sport Scale (TAPAS). Thai university students (N = 612) recruited via convenience sampling completed an online survey using SurveyMonkey between September 2022 and January 2023. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), multigroup CFA, and Pearson correlations (between TAPAS scores, age, body mass index, and time spent exercising) were used to analyze the data. The CFA showed robust psychometric properties for the Thai version of TAPAS regarding its unidimensional structure. The TAPAS was measurement invariant across sex, weight status, and daily hours of exercise. However, no significant Pearson correlations were found. In general, the results showed that the TAPAS is a good scale for assessing PA avoidance among Thai young adults across different sexes, weight status, and daily hours of exercise.

Futuristic universities like The NeurotechEU and the technological innovations they provide will shape and serve society, but will also require support from society. Positive attitudes about neuro-technologies will increase their reach within society and may also impact policy-making, including funding decisions. However, the acceptability rates, especially of invasive neuro-technologies, are quite low and the majority of people are more worried than enthusiastic about them. The question therefore arises as to what neuro-technological advances should entail. In a rare effort to reach out to the public, we propose to conduct a trans-national survey with the goal to better understand the challenges of our NeurotechEU nations. We aim to compare and contrast our nations specifically with respect to their perspectives on neuro-technological advances, i.e., their needs for, interests in, access to, knowledge of and trust in neuro-technologies, and whether these should be regulated. To this end, we have developed the first version of a new tool-the Understanding Societal Challenges Questionnaire (USCQ)-which assesses all six of these dimensions (needs, interest, access, knowledge, trust, and policy-making) and is designed for administration across EU/AC countries. In addition to trans-national comparisons, we will also examine the links of our nations' perspectives on neuro-technological advances to demographic and personality variables, for example, education and socio-economic status, size of the residential area, the Big Five personality traits, religiosity, political standings, and more. We expect that this research will provide a deeper understanding of the challenges that our nations are facing as well as the similarities and differences between them, and will also help uncover the variables that predict positive and negative attitudes toward neuro-technological advances. By integrating this knowledge into the scientific process, The NeurotechEU may be able to develop neuro-technologies that people really care about, are ethical and regulated, and actually understood by the user.

Background: Chronic back pain is a frequent and disabling health problem. There is evidence that ignorance and erroneous beliefs about chronic low back pain among health professionals interfere in the treatment of people who suffer from it. The Health Care Providers' Pain and Impairment Relationship Scale (HC-PAIRS) has been one of the most used scale to assess these misbeliefs, but no studies have been reported in Latin America. Method: We studied the factorial structure of the HC-PAIRS in health personnel and health sciences university students in two Latin American countries: Colombia (n = 930) and Chile (n = 190). Spain's data was taken of the original study of the Spanish version of the HC-PAIRS (171 Physiotherapy students). Additionally, the measurement invariance of this scale among Chile, Colombia and Spain was evaluated by calculating three nested models: configural, metric and scalar. We used a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) in both Latin American samples, with Maximum Likelihood Robust (MLR) estimation to estimate the parameters. For the final model in each sample, reliability was assessed with the Composite Reliability (CR) index, and to obtain the proportion of variance explained by the scale the Average Variance Extracted (AVE) was calculated. Results: The one-factor solution shows an acceptable fit in both countries after deleting items 1, 6, and 14. For the resulting scale, the CR value is adequate, but the AVE is low. There is scalar invariance between Chile and Colombia, but not between these two countries and Spain. Conclusions: HC-PAIRS is useful for detecting misconceptions about the relationship between chronic low back pain that would cause health personnel to give wrong recommendations to patients. However, it has psychometric weaknesses, and it is advisable to obtain other evidence of validity.
