ABSTRACT

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication, and sensory processing. These challenges often make dental visits overwhelming and distressing for children with ASD. This study explores the use of electrodermal activity (EDA) to measure physiological stress responses and evaluates strategies to enhance cooperation during dental treatments in a sensory-adapted dental environment. We conducted a case series involving three children with ASD who required dental treatment. Each child's physiological responses to dental stimuli were monitored using EDA, which measures changes in skin conductance levels and skin conductance responses. Interventions included the use of dim lighting, the avoidance of loud noises, the application of firm pressure, the provision of sensory toys, social stories before appointments, and desensitization and video modeling techniques. All three patients exhibited phasic variations in EDA levels in response to stressful stimuli and tonic changes with calming stimuli. Case 1 responded to bright lights and unfamiliar settings with increased phasic activity, while calming stimuli like firm pressure resulted in tonic changes. Case 2 showed similar phasic responses to a weighted lap pad and tonic changes with music. Case 3 reacted to confined spaces and sudden light and touch with phasic variations and both a massager and music-induced tonic changes. Interventions were tailored to each patient's specific stressors, resulting in improved cooperation and reduced stress levels. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of EDA as a tool for monitoring stress responses in children with ASD during dental treatments. Tailoring interventions to individual sensory needs can significantly enhance patient cooperation and comfort. These findings highlight the importance of adapting dental environments and protocols to accommodate the unique needs of children with ASD, with collaborative efforts from occupational therapists and dentists.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Assessing the progression of COVID stress syndrome (CSS) and understanding how cognitive and emotional factors play a role in the dynamic system is critical for prevention and intervention during the COVID-19 pandemic. We investigated the dynamic relationship between self-reported COVID stress syndrome, cognitive factors, and emotional factors through time-series network analysis. METHODS AND MEASURES: Participants were 188 university students involved in an experience sampling method study that lasted 14 days, three times a day, during the COVID-19 pandemic period following a shift in pandemic prevention and control policy. RESULTS: CSS symptoms are usually present simultaneously, and xenophobia is the most central node of the network. There is a complex mutual predictive relationship between CSS symptoms, in which traumatic stress symptoms are crucial in developing and maintaining the CSS symptom network. Negative affect was associated with CSS symptoms at the same time, and subjective health cognition was a significant predictor of CSS symptoms the next time. CONCLUSIONS: Traumatic stress symptoms are essential nodes in the CSS symptom network, and negative emotions and subjective health influence the occurrence and development of CSS symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Persistent homicidal ideation (HI), while not common among psychiatric disorders, can occur within multiple diagnoses in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. There is a growing global and national concern for homicide and homicide-related deaths. In this case report, we discuss refractory homicidal ideation in an 18-year-old male with the diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia and a history of Tourette's syndrome and highlight the interplay of comorbidities and challenges in effective management and treatment.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the mediating role of self-compassion and social anxiety in the relationship between cognitive distortions and emotional eating. The research was carried out on 406 adult individuals between the ages of 18-25 living in different regions of Turkey. To measure research variables, Liebowitz social anxiety, thought types, self-sensitivity, and Turkish emotional eating scale were used. The scales were distributed to the participants online. The data were analyzed through the SPSS program. In the study, it was determined that self-compassion predicted emotional eating negatively and social anxiety predicted emotional eating positively. According to the results of the serial mediation analysis, it was determined that self-compassion and social anxiety mediated the relationship between cognitive distortions and emotional eating separately.

ABSTRACT

This case report examines the experience of a nine-year-old male with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who was admitted to his rural community emergency department (ED) for the treatment of aggressive behaviors, agitation, and violence. Despite a high prevalence of such behaviors within the autistic pediatric population, multiple inpatient facilities that offer pediatric psychiatric services refused to transfer his care. Many other commonly used resources and treatment modalities were also not available, resulting in a nine-day ED boarding experience with minimal symptomatic improvement. Pharmacotherapy was utilized, but nationally recommended guidelines were not appropriately followed. Although this case is one of many pediatric patients who received inadequate psychiatric care from their local ED, it is significant in identifying specific areas of improvement within Northeast Louisiana psychiatric healthcare. This case report of a nine-year-old male with autism underlines the hardships faced by patients and their families due to the gaps in our current healthcare infrastructure and emphasizes the importance of protocols and resources for patient populations with higher-than-average wellness needs.

ABSTRACT

The widely acknowledged cognitive theory of depression, developed by Aaron Beck, focused on biased information processing that emphasizes the negative aspects of affective and conceptual information. Current attempts to discover the neurological mechanism underlying such cognitive and affective bias have successfully identified various brain regions associated with severally biased functions such as emotion, attention, rumination, and inhibition control. However, the neurobiological mechanisms of how individuals in depression develop this selective processing toward negative is still under question. This paper introduces a neurological framework centered around the frontal-limbic circuit, specifically analyzing and synthesizing the activity and functional connectivity within the amygdala, hippocampus, and medial prefrontal cortex. Firstly, a possible explanation of how the positive feedback loop contributes to the persistent hyperactivity of the amygdala in depression at an automatic level is established. Building upon this, two hypotheses are presented: hypothesis 1 revolves around the bidirectional amygdalohippocampal projection facilitating the amplification of negative emotions and memories while concurrently contributing to the impediment of the retrieval of opposing information in the hippocampus attractor network. Hypothesis 2 highlights the involvement of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex in the establishment of a negative cognitive framework through the generalization of conceptual and emotional information in conjunction with the amygdala and hippocampus. The primary objective of this study is to improve and complement existing pathological models of depression, pushing the frontiers of current understanding in neuroscience of affective disorders, and eventually contributing to successful recovery from the debilitating affective disorders.

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) individually and those with co-occurring ADHD and ASD experience higher rates of total anxiety and psychiatric comorbidities such as gender dysphoria and locomotor skills compared to their typically developing (TD) peers. In this study, it was hypothesized that youth with comorbid ADHD and ASD would experience higher levels of overall anxiety, specifically separation, generalized, and social anxiety. A literature review of relevant studies published from 2007 to 2020 was performed, with a search involving key terms such as "Anxiety," "ADHD" and "ASD'". It was discovered that individuals with ADHD or ASD had higher levels of anxiety compared to their peers. Furthermore, children who have co-occurring ADHD and ASD had more serve levels of anxiety than children with an individual diagnosis of ADHD or ASD. Children with ASD, ADHD, and co-occurring ADHD and ASD had a higher prevalence of gender dysphoria and impaired locomotor skills, which lead to higher levels of psychiatric comorbidities seen in this population. It can be hypothesized psychiatric comorbidities could also have implications for the high anxiety levels seen in this population but further research is needed to confirm this.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this systematic review is to appraise the current evidence on the efficacy and safety of buspirone in core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), co-occurring anxiety, and other associated symptoms. Major medical literature databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), open-label trials, and any other relevant studies or clinical trials reporting on pediatric (age < 18 years) patients with ASD treated with buspirone for any reason. A total of 310 abstracts were screened, and six clinical trials were selected for inclusion. Out of these six clinical trials, two were RCTs (n =166 and 40), two open-label trials (n= 26 and 4), and one cross-over study (n = 1). We also included one retrospective chart review (n=31). Meta-analysis was not performed due to a lack of homogeneity in the two RCTs. Although most of the studies reported improved overall symptoms, they had different outcome measures. The quality of evidence available is low, and there is a need for higher-power studies in the future. Most studies suggested that buspirone was well tolerated and safe in pediatric patients with ASD. Based on the data, there is insufficient evidence to make conclusive recommendations on buspirone for improvement in core symptoms of ASD or cooccurring anxiety, irritability, or hyperactivity symptoms in the pediatric population. Given there are limited approved therapies for co-occurring anxiety, buspirone could be used as a safe off-label option due to the lack of behavioral activation and any serious adverse reactions.

ABSTRACT

When asked to judge the duration of a face people typically overestimate the duration of angry compared with neutral faces. A novel feature of the current research was the inclusion of secondary manipulations designed to distort timing performance namely the effects of visual cues (Experiment 1) and action preparedness (Experiment 2). Furthermore, to establish whether the effects are multiplicative with duration, the effects were examined across two duration ranges (200-800 and 400-1,600 ms). Visual cues and instructions to prepare to act increased the tendency to judge faces as lasting longer. Experiment 1 revealed an unexpected underestimation effect for angry faces presented for short durations (200-800 ms). However, the effect was not replicated in Experiment 2 where the results were generally consistent with either an increase the speed of a pacemaker mechanism that resides within an internal clock or the widening of an attentional gate-the temporal overestimation effect for angry faces grew in magnitude from the short to long duration. Experiment 2 also showed that the temporal overestimation for angry faces was reduced in magnitude when participants were asked to prepare to either push or pull a joystick.

ABSTRACT

Many people listen to music that conveys challenging emotions such as sadness and anger, despite the commonly assumed purpose of media being to elicit pleasure. We propose that eudaimonic motivation, the desire to engage with aesthetic experiences to be challenged and facilitate meaningful experiences, can explain why people listen to music containing such emotions. However, it is unknown whether music containing violent themes can facilitate such meaningful experiences. In this investigation, three studies were conducted to determine the implications of eudaimonic and hedonic (pleasure-seeking) motivations for fans of music with violent themes. In Study 1, we developed and tested a new scale and showed that fans exhibit high levels of both types of motivation. Study 2 further validated the new scale and provided evidence that the two types of motivations are associated with different affective outcomes. Study 3 revealed that fans of violently themed music exhibited higher levels of eudaimonic motivation and lower levels of hedonic motivation than fans of non-violently themed music. Taken together, the findings support the notion that fans of music with violent themes are driven to engage with this music to be challenged and to pursue meaning, as well as to experience pleasure. Implications for fans' well-being and future applications of the new measure are discussed.

ABSTRACT

In this article I suggest how theories of emotion construction may inform the study of cognition-emotion interactions. To do so, I adopt the two main concepts core affect and emotions as categories: Core affect, one's current affective state, which is defined by the two dimensions pleasure and arousal, is an inherent part of any conscious experience. Specific emotions are understood as categories including highly diverse exemplars. I argue that (1) affective states can and should not be differentiated from cognitive states, and that (2) specific emotions may follow the same principles as other biological or more general categories. I review some empirical evidence in support of these ideas and show avenues for future research.

ABSTRACT

Adolescents with emotional and behavioral disorders face known academic challenges and poor life outcomes. It was imperative to explore and find if the new diagnostic criterion for diagnosing autism profoundly affects educational outcomes and resilience in individuals diagnosed with co-occurring autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The literature is robust on the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on educational outcomes and resilience in adolescents with no history of disability. Still, there remains a dearth of literature explaining, with no ambiguity, the complex relationships between ACEs and resilience, school engagement, and success in individuals with co-occurring ASD and ADHD. This study reviews the existing scholarships on the topic. The significance of this review is that it informs healthcare providers, rehabilitation counselors, and educators about the need for early identification of individuals with ASD and ADHD with a background in ACEs. This will enable interventions early enough to ensure they are more resilient and can obtain improved success in school-related and outside-school activities and eventually improved quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The research paper establishes the impact of spatial stimulus on human cognition and emotion by studying environmental events as cues to understand how people perceive spatial qualities. The medium of film to implement visually disruptive events was used in the research to find the relationship between the subjective evaluation of space and emotional responses. Method: Ninety participants participated in watching three films showcasing unexpected spatial stimuli, thus impacting their psychological state. Standard questionnaires involving Aesthetic chills and The Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) model were used to capture emotional responses, and Normalized Accumulated Quality (NAQ) model was used to receive space quality assessments. The Pearson correlation coefficient was subsequently used to find the association of chills and The SAM with NAQ. Univariate and multivariate regression models were also conducted to find the impact of emotional responses on NAQ. Results: A significant association of NAQ with chills (p-value: 0.001), pleasure (p-value <0.001), arousal (p-value: 0.016), and dominance (p-value: 0.015) was witnessed in film 1. In film 2, NAQ was significantly associated with pleasure (p-value <0.001), while in film 3, NAQ was highly associated with arousal (p-value: 0.043). According to the adjusted impact of variables on NAQ in film 1, significant impacts of chills (p-value: 0.028), arousal (p-value: 0.117), pleasure (p-value <0.001), and dominance (p-value: 0.113) on NAQ were observed. In film 2, pleasure (p-value <0.001) and dominance (p-value: 0.113) impacted NAQ using the univariate model, while only pleasure had an impact on NAQ in the multivariate model. In film 3, arousal was the only variable to impact NAQ (p-value: 0.043) in a univariate model. In regression analyses, higher slopes were witnessed for models in film 1. Conclusion: The experiment highlighted that using affect-based video clips can help us capture the relationship between emotional responses and perceived quality of space. The appearance of spatial stimuli can engage learning, expectation, and attention, leading to a superior improvement of cognitive ability and mental health in space. This level of understanding can help design a more sustainable place.

ABSTRACT

The study of understanding sentiment and emotion in speech is a challenging task in human multimodal language. However, in certain cases, such as telephone calls, only audio data can be obtained. In this study, we independently evaluated sentiment analysis and emotion recognition from speech using recent self-supervised learning models-specifically, universal speech representations with speaker-aware pre-training models. Three different sizes of universal models were evaluated for three sentiment tasks and an emotion task. The evaluation revealed that the best results were obtained with two classes of sentiment analysis, based on both weighted and unweighted accuracy scores (81% and 73%). This binary classification with unimodal acoustic analysis also performed competitively compared to previous methods which used multimodal fusion. The models failed to make accurate predictionsin an emotion recognition task and in sentiment analysis tasks with higher numbers of classes. The unbalanced property of the datasets may also have contributed to the performance degradations observed in the six-class emotion, three-class sentiment, and seven-class sentiment tasks.

We present results from two experiments aimed at studying the direction of Mona Lisa's gaze and its affective expression. In experiment 1 we studied the effect of retinal image size on the perception of her gaze by manipulating observation distances of a high-quality print of the painting. Participants (N = 30) were asked to answer a simple question (is the person portrayed looking at you?) from six different distances ranging from 55 to 755 cm. One group of participants started evaluations from 55 cm; the other group did the opposite. Results show an effect of distance on the perception of Mona Lisa's gaze as staring at the observer: from the furthest distances, the impression of a staring Mona Lisa is robust; from the nearest distances, such impression becomes ambiguous. Experiment 2 presents data concerning the direction of Mona Lisa's gaze and whether this appears to be smiling, derived from an experiment aimed at studying the impression of gaze (direction and emotional content) in portraits (paintings and photographs). Only data concerning Mona Lisa are reported. Participants (N = 41) were randomly assigned to one of two groups: on a LCD screen, one group saw the entire head, and the other group saw only a section reproducing Mona Lisa's eyes. Experimental sessions were two: in session 1 participants had to decide whether the image (whole-head or eyes only) was looking at them; in session 2 participants had to decide whether the head (or the eyes) was smiling. RTs from the two groups of participants were not statistically significant. Results for session 1 confirm experiment 1's general findings. Results for session 2 clearly show that Mona Lisa is not only smiling with her face, but also with her eyes. Results are discussed in relation to the literature on Mona Lisa's gaze and smile.

Introduction: To optimize treatment, it is of utmost importance to take into account the myriad of biological, social, and psychological changes that young people go through during adolescence which make them more vulnerable for developing mental health problems. Biocueing, a non-invasive method to transform physiological parameters into an observable signal, could strengthen stress- and emotion regulation by cueing physiologically unusual values in daily life. The aim of this study is to investigate the usability, feasibility, and exploratory effect of biocueing in addition to ENgage YOung people earlY (ENYOY), a moderated digital social therapy-platform, in young people with emerging mental health complaints. Methods: A user-centered mixed-method design was used. A focus group was conducted to optimize the ENYOY-platform and biocueing intervention. Biocueing was operationalized by a smartwatch and the Sense-IT app. A within-subjects design was used; 10 days for all participants 'biofeedback off' (control), followed by 10 days 'biofeedback on' (experimental). Emotional awareness and perceived stress were measured using ecological momentary assessment. Eight individuals participated. User-friendliness, usability, and acceptance were assessed using a qualitative design. Results: Findings from the focus group resulted in several adaptations of the biocueing intervention to the ENYOY-platform and vice versa. The average measurement compliance rate was 78.8%. Level-one findings showed different individual effects on perceived stress and emotional awareness. Level-two analyses showed no overall effects on perceived stress (B = -0.020, p = 0.562) and overall positive effects on emotional awareness (B = 0.030, p = 0.048) with small effect sizes (Improvement Rate Difference = 0.05-0.35). The intervention was found to be acceptable and showed moderate usability. Participants indicated they experienced improvements in reflection on feelings and changes in behavior, such as pausing and evaluating the situation. Conclusion: These preliminary results show that biocueing could be a promising addition to digital treatment platforms and help young people become more emotionally aware. Improvements should be made regarding the usability and acceptability of the smartwatch, as well as more extensive integration of the biocueing intervention with a digital treatment platform. It would be relevant to gain a better understanding of which individuals would benefit most from an additional biocueing intervention.

ABSTRACT

Mood of the Planet is an interactive physical-digital sculpture that has as its center-piece a large "arch" or "doorway" that emits colored light and sound as a form of visualization and sonification of the changing, live emotions expressed by people all around the Earth. It is the product of several disciplines, including the arts, computer science, linguistics and psychology. In particular, we use artificial intelligence to collect and analyze social media data and extract emotions from these using a brain-inspired and psychologically motivated emotion categorization model. Such emotions are then translated into colors and sounds that the audience can experience while passing through the arch. Feedback from the audience proved the Mood of the Planet to provide a more accurate, personal and tangible experience about the data-emotions dichotomy.
