ABSTRACT

Babywearing is the practice of carrying an infant in a baby carrier, which may provide an inexpensive, nonpharmacological intervention for the parent-infant dyads to handle mental stressors, such as pain and anxiety, especially among vulnerable infants. This study investigated the influence of babywearing on parent-infant autonomic coregulation based on the changes in the HR of mother-infant and father-infant dyads for infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Guided by the Calming Cycle Theory as the framework, the correlation between parent HR and infant HR and the difference in the mother-infant dyad (n = 17) compared to the father-infant dyad (n = 8) were examined. Although only the mother-infant HRs reached statistical significance during babywearing (r̅ =.52, p = .03), both parent-infant dyads had strong correlations during babywearing (compared to pre- and post-babywearing conditions), indicating that babywearing, for parents and their infants with NAS, may influence autonomic coregulation.

OBJECTIVE: Speed-securing measures are intended to, as the name suggests, to secure that the speeds of road users do not exceed the safe speed for a given type of environment. The purpose of this study was to make an evaluation of existing speed-securing measures on rural roads in Sweden to see how well they manage to limit the speed. METHODS AND DATA: A total of 34 unique locations have been filmed with drones with varying speed limits between 40 and 70 km/h. The analysis focused on the radius of both the individual vehicle trajectories and the radius of the roads themselves and how they relate to the speed choice of the drivers (including the 85th percentile speed). RESULTS: The result shows a moderate correlation between both types of radii and the speed choice of the drivers. In addition, the result also shows only a weak correlation between the driven radius and the radius of the roads themselves. Finally, the result also shows that only 17 locations manage to keep the 85th percentile speeds under the speed limit. CONCLUSION: Overall, the study suggests that the radius of the infrastructure is an important factor to lower the speed but the lack of a clear relationship between the driven radius and the radius of the road shows that more research is needed to properly understand why some locations work better than others.

ABSTRACT

Juvenile rodents and other altricial mammals react with calming, immobility and folding up of feet to parental pickup, a set of behaviors referred to as transport response. Here we investigate sensory mechanisms underlying the rat transport response. Grasping rat pups in anterior neck positions evokes strong immobility and folding up of feet, whereas more posterior grasping positions have lesser effects on immobility and foot position. Transport responses are enhanced by slow (1Hz) and even more so by fast (4Hz) gentle shaking and translation of the pup, features consistent with parental transport. In response to lateral grasping, the forepaw below the grasping position points downwards and the forepaw lateral to the grasping position points upwards and medially. Such forepaw adjustments put the pup's center of gravity below the grasping point, optimizing pup transportability along with folding up of feet and tail lifting. Tactile stimuli on the back, belly, tail, whisker, dorsal forepaws and dorsal hind-paws do not significantly affect the behaviour of anterior-neck-held pups. Instead, ground contact or paw stimulation consistent with ground contact disrupts transport responses. We identify afferents mediating the transport response by examining membrane labelling with FM1-43 following anterior neck grasping. We observe a dense innervation of the anterior neck skin region (~30 terminals/ mm2). We also observed an age-related decrease of cytochrome oxidase reactivity in the rat somatosensory cortical neck representation, a possible correlate to the developmental decrease in the pup transport response. We conclude anterior neck grasping and loss of ground contact trigger calming and postural adjustments for parental transport in rat pups, responses putatively driven from the densely innervated anterior neck skin.

ABSTRACT

AIDS is a serious disease with impaired immune function caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The treatment of AIDS has always been the focus of global scientific research, and Tat protein is a key regulatory protein in the process of HIV infection. Its high expression is closely related to virus replication, disease progression, etc. The aim of this study is to explore the molecular mechanism of regulating Tat protein expression by using network pharmacology based traditional Chinese medicine for calming the liver and detoxifying. 129 AIDS patients were enrolled in the study and randomly divided into HAART combined with PGJDP treatment and HAART alone treatment groups. The virological response rate, immunological response status (CD4 + T cell level, CD4/CD8) and incidence of abnormal liver function were observed before and 48 weeks after treatment. Using the TCMSP database to obtain the chemical components and targets of the main traditional Chinese medicine components in PGJDP, clinical results indicate that the combination of HAART and PGJDP treatment can improve the virological response rate (P > 0.05); Increase the number of CD4 + T lymphocytes (P > 0.05); Significantly increased CD4/CD8 ratio (P < 0.01); Simultaneously, it significantly reduced the incidence of liver dysfunction (P < 0.01). After screening and analysis, the Chinese herbal medicine for calming liver and detoxifying has the potential to significantly regulate the expression of Tat protein. These Chinese herbal compounds can reduce the expression of Tat protein by affecting key pathways and regulating the expression of related genes, which has potential therapeutic effects on the treatment of AIDS.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This article presents an analysis of the traffic-calming effects of bus rapid transit (BRT) by studying changes to motor vehicle speeds before and after implementation of Albuquerque Rapid Transit (ART) infrastructure in Albuquerque, New Mexico. METHODS: While ART construction was completed in spring 2018, the BRT buses did not operate until December 2019; providing a unique opportunity to explore the influence of BRT infrastructure sans BRT buses (i.e., to tease apart the effects of BRT infrastructure and operations). We used validated data from StreetLight InSight to compare before/after changes to average motor vehicle speeds and 85th percentile motor vehicle speeds at 46 ART sites and 36 control sites. RESULTS: Findings suggest that infrastructure associated with BRT systems can improve traffic safety by reducing vehicle speeds. Speed decreases at the ART sites were especially strong in terms of 85th percentile decreases, suggesting that the BRT infrastructure is especially effective at limiting excessive speeding. Motor vehicle 85th-percentile speeds along the ART corridor were reduced by 11.5% (compared to a 5.8% decrease at control sites). The 85th-percentile speeds at the ART sites decreased from 32.3 mph to 28.6 mph, which is an especially important range for vulnerable road-user safety outcomes. While ART intersections saw the largest decreases in absolute speeds (a reduction of 4.1 mph in 85th-percentile speeds), ART mid-block sites had larger decreases relative to the control mid-block sites (decreases in 85th-percentile speeds were 73.7% greater at ART mid-block sites than at control mid-block sites). BRT-related lane reductions were linked with particularly strong speed reductions; there were 85th-percentile speed reductions of 4.1 mph (12.6%) when general vehicle lanes were removed versus 2.2 mph (7.8%) when lanes were not removed. CONCLUSIONS: Speed reductions were experienced across the ART corridor even though 87.0% of BRT locations did not have a change in posted speed limit, suggesting that physical changes to the roadway associated with BRT were impactful in terms of speed reductions and in turn could possibly promote traffic injury prevention by decreasing the number and severity of crashes.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Roadwork zones represent a hazardous place within the highway system, with higher crash rates and injury severity, often due to excessive speed and noncompliance with speed limits. On freeways, a common layout is to close a full roadway and to divert traffic onto the opposite roadway, with one lane closed to accommodate the redirected traffic, by driving through the median strip. In this scenario, the second chicane can be a hazardous point if it is not correctly signaled. This paper examines the need to install a speed monitoring display (SMD) before the returning chicane on a bypass. METHODS: A two-phase study was conducted on a Spanish freeway where a roadway was temporarily closed. Two measurement points were established on the bypass, one in the middle and one at the end, prior to the return chicane through the median strip. During Phase 1, the portable SMD was installed and during Phase 2, it was removed. The average and the 85th percentile of the speed distribution at each point during both phases were compared. Additionally, mean difference tests were conducted and a speed prediction model was developed. RESULTS: With the SMD, drivers reduced their speed from the midpoint to the returning chicane, within the range of 7-10 km/h. Conversely, upon removal of the SMD, motorists increased their speed while driving through the bypass, resulting in excessive speed at the most hazardous point, the chicane leading back to the original roadway. The difference in mean speed between the two phases was 18 km/h at the returning chicane. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to the traffic calming measures implemented prior to entering roadwork zones on freeways, which are conveniently established in the standards; it is necessary to evaluate potentially dangerous areas of the layout and implement additional measures where required. Specifically, in the case of final chicanes of bypasses with reduced radii, it is recommended that a speed monitoring display be installed as a mandatory element in order to inform drivers of this challenging segment. Highway administrations around the world should maintain a SMD at the returning chicane of a bypass while roadworks last.

ABSTRACT

Background: Melissa officinalis L. (MO), commonly known as lemon balm, a member of the mint family, is considered a calming herb. In various traditional medicines, it has been utilized to reduce stress and anxiety and promote sleep. A growing body of clinical evidence suggests that MO leaf extract supplementation possesses considerable neuropharmacological properties. However, its possible mechanism of action largely remains unknown. Objective: In the present in vitro studies, we comparatively investigated the central nervous system (CNS)-calming and antioxidative stress properties of an innovative standardized phospholipid carrier-based (Phytosome™) MO extract (Relissa™) vs. an unformulated dry MO extract. Methods: The neuropharmacological effect of the extract was studied in the anti-depressant enzymes γ-aminobutyrate transaminase (GABA-T) and monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) assays and SH-SY5Y cells brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression assay. The neuroprotective effect of the extract against oxidative stress was assessed in SH-SY5Y cell-based (H2O2-exposed) Total Antioxidant Status (TAS) and Total Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) assays. The cytotoxic effect of the extract was evaluated using MTT and LDH assays. The extract antioxidant effect was also evaluated in cell-free chemical tests, including TEAC-ABTS, DPPH, Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), Oxygen Radical Antioxidant Capacity (ORAC), and Hydroxyl Radical Antioxidant Capacity (HORAC) assays. Results: Relissa™ exhibited high GABA-T inhibitory activity, IC50 (mg/mL) = 0.064 vs. unformulated dry MO extract, IC50 (mg/mL) = 0.27. Similar inhibitory effects were also observed for MAO-A. Relissa™ demonstrated an improved neuroprotective antioxidant effect on SH-SY5Y cells against H2O2-induced oxidative stress. Compared to unformulated dry MO extract, Relissa™ exerted high protective effect on H2O2-exposed SH-SY5Y cells, leading to higher cells BDNF expression levels. Moreover, cell-free chemical tests, including TEAC-ABTS, DPPH radical scavenging, FRAP, ORAC, and HORAC assays, validated the improved antioxidant effect of Relissa™ vs. unformulated dry MO extract. Conclusion: The results of the present study support the neuromodulating and neuroprotective properties of Relissa™, and its supplementation may help in the amelioration of emotional distress and related conditions.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess the potential of Spherical Cap Studs (SCS) as a substitute for conventional speed bumps, with a focus on limiting two wheeler speed while minimizing discomfort to riders by comparing the speed reduction capabilities and discomfort levels associated with SCS and speed bumps. METHODS: The study uses experimental approach to compare the speed limiting ability and discomfort caused to rider by the proposed SCS and a standard speed bump. Speed profiles were developed for two wheelers passing over both SCS and speed bump. The parameter employed to compare speed profiles is the Mean Absolute Percentage Difference (MAPD), offering valuable insights into how effectively the two traffic calming measures reduce two wheeler speeds. To compare discomfort, the study calculates the 'Vibration Dose Value' (VDV) experienced by riders when traversing both speed bump and SCS. Additionally, 'Static Compressive Stress' (Se) applied to the spinal cord is also calculated in both scenarios. RESULTS: The analysis of speed profiles reveals an MAPD value of 13.70% indicating that SCS exhibits speed reduction capabilities comparable to traditional speed bump. In terms of discomfort, the VDV for two wheelers passing over a speed bump is measured at 5.92 m/s1.75, whereas the VDV for SCS is found to be 5.16 m/s1.75. Similarly, the Static Compressive Stress (Se) experienced at a speed bump is 0.60 MPa, in contrast to the 0.33 MPa recorded for SCS. This data underscores a noteworthy 12.8% reduction in VDV and a substantial 45.57% reduction in Se. CONCLUSION: The study's findings support the potential adoption of SCS as an effective alternative to conventional speed bumps for controlling two wheeler speeds. SCS demonstrate a speed reduction capability similar to that of traditional speed bumps while significantly alleviating discomfort for riders. SCS is expected to be a promising solution for traffic calming purposes in various settings, such as markets, residential areas, institutional campuses, and parking lots.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Early life stress and adversity conveys risk for emotional, behavioral, and developmental disorders. To address this risk in the preschool population, Mother-Child Emotional Preparation (MCEP) was tested as an in-school dyadic intervention for facilitating mother-child emotional connection through mother-child calming cycles. In a computer-generated block randomized controlled trial enrolling preschool-aged children and their mothers, in partnership with an early childhood learning center, we at Columbia University Irving Medical Center tested effects of MCEP across multiple domains. Within this RCT we designed a qualitative sub-study to understand how MCEP aligns with calming cycle theory and its impact on mothers and the mother-child relationship. METHODS: A qualitative researcher observed 14 group MCEP sessions consisting of nurture specialists facilitating reciprocal calming interactions through shared emotional expression between mothers and their preschool-aged children. We conducted two waves of participant interviews in English or Spanish, per participant preference. Participants (n = 8) were majority Hispanic at or below the federal poverty level. Group session observations were coded and analyzed for frequency, co-occurrence, variance by session, and alignment with calming cycle theory, incorporating demographic variables and attendance. Interview transcripts were translated from Spanish to English if needed, then coded and analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: Qualitative analysis revealed mothers' experiences of MCEP. Data demonstrated that calming position and emotional expression were mutually supportive, and that barriers to connection were calming cycle entry-points, not barriers. At the group level, supported by nurture specialists, fellow participants helped each other progress through calming cycles. Moreover, MCEP adapted to meet individual dyad needs, and mothers described its far-reaching impact. CONCLUSIONS: Qualitative methods show that MCEP helps mother-child dyads emotionally connect through the calming cycle and fills a gap in early childhood education services. This study generated insights for quantitative studies and suggested implications for MCEP dissemination. ABSTRACT

Traffic calming (TC) has been applied widely for several decades, although approaches to evaluating its effects on speeds have been inconsistent. This resulted in limited comparable and robust evidence to support practitioner guidance for TC design. To fill this gap and suggest best practices for the evaluation of TC effects on speeds, we performed a systematic review of 158 publications. We distilled information related to five research questions: Which measurement sensor was used? How was speed measured? Was free-flow speed considered? What was the sampling density? How were sample considerations reported? In addition to coding the studies based on these research questions, we rated them based on scientific robustness. The review confirmed the inconsistent state of evaluation practice. Most common evaluation approaches employed static detectors, low levels of control for bias (simple before-after), and unknown survey periods. The review found that the most robust evaluation practices involved multivariate before-after or cross-sectional study designs, used dynamic measurement of speeds (e.g., probe vehicles, simulations), large samples of vehicles, and more precise evaluation of speed changes using speed-distance graphs. These findings could guide more consistent and robust evaluation practice, and thus help to improve evidence-based TC guidance for creating safer and more sustainable neighborhoods.

Calming supplements are common in the equine industry. This study tested the hypothesis that Phytozen EQ, a blend of citrus botanical oils, magnesium, and yeast would reduce startle response as well as reduce behavioral and physiological signs of stress in young (1.5-6 years of age) horses (n = 14) when tied in isolation and when trailered in isolation. During the 59-day trial, horses were assigned to either the control (CON; n = 7) or treatment (PZEN; n = 7) group that received 56 g of Phytozen EQ daily. Horses underwent a 10-minute isolation test on d 30 and a 15 minute individual trailering test on day 52 or 55. For both tests, blood samples were obtained pre, immediately after, and 1-hour post for analysis of plasma cortisol concentrations, which were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA. On day 59, horses underwent a startle test, for which time to travel 3 m and total distance traveled were recorded. These data were analyzed using a T-test. During trailering, PZEN horses tended to have lower overall geometric mean (lower, upper 95% confidence interval) cortisol concentrations than CON (81 [67, 98] vs. 61 [48, 78] ng/mL; P = .071). For the startle test, PZEN horses tended to have longer geometric mean times to travel 3 m than CON horses (1.35 [0.39, 4.70] vs. 0.26 [0.07, 0.91 seconds, P = 0.064). Other data points were not different between treatments (P > .1). It is possible that this dietary supplement could have beneficial calming effects on horses undergoing trailering or in novel situations.

Cocaine use could be modulated by drug expectancies based on previously experienced subjective effects. Some patients perceive a paradoxical calming effect after cocaine use. This study was performed to explore cocaine effect expectancies in patients diagnosed with cocaine use disorder, with and without co-occurring adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Secondly, we sought to empirically determine the presence of this paradoxical calming effect after cocaine use in patients with co-occurring adult ADHD to identify the individuals most at risk of cocaine use and relapse. Cross-sectional study using a consecutive sampling method of patients diagnosed with cocaine use disorder (n = 221) treated at public therapeutic communities in Andalusia (Spain). Participants completed a battery of instruments to assess the following variables: cocaine effect expectancies, paradoxical calming effect, adult ADHD, and other co-occurring psychiatric disorders. A multivariate binary logistic regression analysis showed that two variables, the paradoxical calming effect and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), were independently associated with the probability of being diagnosed with adult ADHD (OR = 3.43, 95% CI = 1.88-6.26 and OR = 3.42, 95% CI = 1.30-8.95, respectively). The presence of a paradoxical calming reaction to cocaine and/or a diagnosis of ASPD in patients with cocaine use disorder increases the diagnostic suspicion of co-occurring adult ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding in the early postpartum period is expected to have mental benefits for mothers; however, the underlying psychobiological mechanisms remain unclear. Previously, we hypothesized that the release of oxytocin in response to the suckling stimuli during breastfeeding would mediate a calming effect on primiparous mothers, and we examined salivary oxytocin measurements in primiparous mothers at postpartum day 4 using saliva samples without extraction, which was erroneous. Thus, further confirmation of this hypothesis with a precise methodology was needed. METHODS: We collected saliva samples at three time points (baseline, feeding, and post-feeding) to measure oxytocin in 24 primiparous mothers on postpartum day 2 (PD2) and 4 (PD4) across the breastfeeding cycle. Salivary oxytocin levels using both extracted and unextracted methods were measured and compared to determine the qualitative differences. State and trait anxiety and clinical demographics were evaluated to determine their association with oxytocin changes. RESULTS: Breastfeeding elevated salivary oxytocin levels; however, it was not detected to a significant increase in the extraction method at PD4. We found a weak but significant positive correlation between changes in extracted and unextracted oxytocin levels during breastfeeding (feeding minus baseline); there were no other significant positive correlations. Therefore, we used the extracted measurement index for subsequent analysis. We showed that the greater the increase in oxytocin during breastfeeding, the lower the state anxiety, but not trait anxiety. Mothers who exclusively breastfed at the 1-month follow-up tended to be associated with slightly higher oxytocin change at PD2 than those who did not. CONCLUSIONS: Breastfeeding in early postpartum days could be accompanied by the frequent release of oxytocin and lower state anxiety, potentially contributing to exclusive breastfeeding.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The S-shaped function of probability of pedestrian fatality with respect to impact speed of vehicle is well known in road safety literature. However, the implication of this evidence for changes in speed for a population of drivers has not been explored. METHOD: An integrated model has been developed to estimate pedestrian fatalities resulting from changes in speed of traffic. The model uses combined relative risks of injury crash rate of drivers and probability of pedestrian fatality resulting from an injury crash. Two approaches have been used-an individual approach using probability distribution of speed, and an aggregate approach, using only mean speed. The application of the model has been demonstrated using four case studies with speed of traffic before and after an intervention. RESULTS: It is found that even small reductions in mean speed translate to large reductions in pedestrian fatalities. The risk contributed by speeding vehicles is highly disproportionate to their share in vehicle population. In a case study from Delhi (India), in which at-grade junction was replaced with a grade-separated junction, 74% of risk of pedestrian fatalities is contributed by less than 5% speeding vehicles (>50km/h). Changes in mean speed is a poor indicator of changes in injury risk if the standard deviation of the distribution also changes significantly. A surprising finding was that large variation in the S-shape of pedestrian fatality risk function has relatively small effects on overall results. CONCLUSIONS: A new model has been developed to estimate changes in pedestrian fatalities resulting from changes in traffic speed. The application of the model using four speed-related interventions emphasize that deterrence of a small proportion of drivers using speed enforcement can have large implications for pedestrian safety.

ABSTRACT

Transition zones are a road section where posted speed drops from higher to lower limits. Due to the sudden changes in posted speed limits and road environment, drivers usually do not adapt to the posted speed limits and underestimate their traveling speed. Previous studies have highlighted that crash rates are usually higher in these sections. This study aims at improving the safety at transition zones by introducing perceptual measures that are tested using a driving simulator. The proposed measures are speed limit pavement markings with a gradual increase of brightness and/or size that were placed at transition zones in simulation scenarios replicating the real-world environment of the Doha Expressway in Qatar. These innovative measures aim to produce the impression of increased speed that could stimulate drivers to better adapt speed limits. The driving behavior of 81 drivers possessing a valid Qatari driving license was recorded with a driving simulator interfaced with STISIM Drive® 3. Results showed that pavement markings combining size and brightness manipulations were the most effective treatment, keeping drivers' traveling speed significantly below the traveling speed recorded in the untreated control condition. In this regard, the maximum mean speed reductions of 5.3 km/h and 4.6 km/h were observed for this treatment at the first transition (120 to 100 km/h) and second transition (100 to 80 km/h) zones, respectively. Regarding the variations in drivers' lateral position, the results showed that the proposed pavement markings did not negatively influence drivers' lateral control on the road as the maximum observed standard deviation of lateral position was around 0.065 m. This study shows that the proposed pavement markings are recommended for improving the speed adaptation of drivers in the transition zones.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Speeding is a crucial risk factor for pedestrian safety because it shortens reaction time while increasing the impact force in collisions. Various types of traffic calming measures to prevent speeding have been devised. A speed hump-a raised bump installed in the pavement-has been widely used for this purpose. METHOD: To evaluate the effectiveness of speed humps, the speed profiles of vehicles passing speed humps were analyzed along with pedestrian crash records near speed humps. RESULTS: The speed profiles showed that vehicles gradually diminished their speeds starting 30 m ahead of speed humps and, immediately after passing the humps, accelerated to regain their original speeds within a distance of 30 m. This speed reduction effect is substantial on both local and major roads: 18.4% and 24.0% reduction in speeds, respectively. The analysis of pedestrian crash records revealed that, inside the zones of speed reduction effect near speed humps (i.e., ±30 m from speed humps), fewer pedestrian crashes per roadway distance occurred and pedestrian injuries were less severe, compared with events outside the effect zones. This safety improvement was greater on major roads than local roads. Practical Applications: This work finds that the speed reductions that occurred near speed humps were gradual and influential ±30 m from their locations, suggesting that the hump installations should be close enough to the pedestrian crossings. It is noteworthy that, albeit that speed humps are more prevalent on local roads, the benefits of speed reduction effects from speed humps were more pronounced on major roads than on local roads. Therefore, speed humps on major roads can be considered a more effective measure for pedestrian safety.

ABSTRACT

Migraine is a recurrent disease with complex pathogenesis and is difficult to cure. At present, commercially available western migraine drugs are prone to generate side effects while treating the disease. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) avoids side effects via treatment with the principles of "treating both symptoms and root causes", "overall adjustment", and "treatment based on syndrome differentiation". Three strategies of drug treatment were developed based on the syndromes, i.e., removing stasis, calming liver Yang, and reinforcing deficiency. Prescriptions of removing stasis mostly contain Chuanxiong rhizome (Chuan Xiong) to remove blood stasis by promoting blood circulation and improve properties of hemorheology, and Da Chuan Xiong Formula (DCXF) is a traditional prescription widely used in clinical practice. Prescriptions of calming liver Yang usually take Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis (Gou Teng) as the main herb, which can calm the liver Yang via improving vasomotor function, and Tian Ma Gou Teng Decoction (TMGTD) is the representative drug. For reinforcing deficiency, Chinese doctors frequently utilize Angelica Sinensis (Dang Gui) and Astragali Radix (Huang Qi) to nourish blood and Qi in order to improve the weak state of human body; Dang Gui Bu Xue Decoction (DGBXD) is the commonly used prescription. These strategies not only treat the symptoms of diseases but also their root causes, and with the features of multiple targets, in multiple ways. Therefore, TCM prescriptions have obvious advantages in the treatment of chronic diseases such as migraine. In this review, we provided an overview of the pathogenesis of migraine and the function of representative TCM preparations in therapy of migraine as well as the mechanism of action according to effective researches, in order to provide reference and clue for further researches.

ABSTRACT

In most disasters that have been studied, the underlying dangerous cause does not persist for very long. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic a progressively emerging life threat remains, exposing everyone to varying levels of risk of contracting the illness, dying, or infecting others. Distancing and avoiding company have a great impact on social life. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has an enormous economic impact for many losing work and income, which is even affecting basic needs such as access to food and housing. In addition, loss of loved ones may compound the effects of fear and loss of resources. The aim of this paper is to distil, from a range of published literature, lessons from past disasters to assist in mitigating adverse psychosocial reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic. European, American, and Asian studies of disasters show that long-term social and psychological consequences of disasters may compromise initial solidarity. Psychosocial disruptions, practical and financial problems, and complex community and political issues may then result in a 'second disaster'. Lessons from past disasters suggest that communities and their leaders, as well as mental healthcare providers, need to pay attention to fear regarding the ongoing threat, as well as sadness and grief, and to provide hope to mitigate social disruption.


En la mayoría de los desastres que han sido estudiados, la causa subyacente que genera el peligro no persiste por mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, durante la pandemia COVID-19 una amenaza a la vida progresivamente emergente es mantenida, exponiendo a todos a variados niveles de riesgo de contraer la enfermedad, morir o infectar a otros. Distanciarse y evitar la compañía tiene un gran impacto en la vida social. Además, la pandemia COVID-19 tiene un impacto económico enorme para muchos por la pérdida de trabajos e ingreso, lo que está incluso afectando las necesidades básicas como la comida o la vivienda. En adición a esto, la pérdida de seres queridos puede agravar los efectos del miedo y la pérdida de recursos. El objetivo de este artículo es sintetizar a partir de una variedad de literatura publicada, lecciones de desastres pasados para ayudar a mitigar las reacciones psicosociales adversas a la pandemia COVID-19. Trabajos europeos, americanos y asiáticos sobre desastres muestran que las consecuencias a largo plazo tanto sociales como económicas de los desastres pueden poner en peligro la solidaridad inicial. Las disrupciones psicosociales, los problemas prácticos y financieros, y los complejos problemas comunitarios y políticos pueden resultar en un 'Segundo desastre'. Las lecciones de desastres pasados sugieren que las comunidades, sus líderes y también los proveedores de atención en salud mental necesitan prestar atención al miedo en relación a la amenaza en curso, así como a la tristeza y al duelo, y proveer esperanza para mitigar la disrupción social.

Purpose: This study was carried out to assess the effect of the odor of breast milk and formula milk on reducing the acute pain of newborn infants during the heel-prick blood sampling. Methods: Eighty-four newborn were randomly assigned into two groups (formula milk group and breast milk group) with 42 infant searches. The pain that the newborn felt before, during, and after heel-prick blood sampling was assessed using Neonatal Infant Pain Scale; their heart rate and blood oxygen saturation were measured with a pulse oximeter. Saliva samples were taken from newborns before and after sampling, and their salivary cortisol level was measured. During sampling, the crying duration of newborn was recorded with a chronometer. Results: The pain threshold and heart rates of the newborn in the breast milk group were significantly lower than those in the formula milk group (p < 0.001). Salivary cortisol in the formula milk group increased and oxygen saturation levels in these infants decreased significantly more as compared to the breast milk group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The odor of breast milk may be helpful in reducing the pain of newborn during heel-prick blood sampling.

INTRODUCTION: Extrinsic factors, such as solar radiation and urban pollution, cause damage that alters the structure, function and appearance of skin. The aim of this study was to determine the ability of a night cream containing melatonin, carnosine and Helichrysum italicum extract (referred to here as Night Cream) to reduce extrinsic skin damage, and to evaluate the efficacy of this Night Cream to reduce clinical signs of age and photodamage under normal conditions of use. METHODS: Recovery from extrinsic damage was assessed by exposing human skin explants to ultraviolet (UV) A, infrared light, blue light or pollution and then treating the stress-exposed explants with Night Cream. Markers of oxidative stress were examined by immunohistochemistry. Anti-aging and calming properties were determined in four single-center, open-label trials involving 117 individuals. Subjects applied Night Cream to their face once nightly for up to 12 weeks. Improvements in clinical signs of age and photodamage, and reduction of lactic acid-induced stinging were evaluated by investigator assessment and subject self-assessment. RESULTS: Night Cream significantly reduced oxidative stress in human skin ex vivo. Clinically, hydration (+ 64.4%; p < 0.05) and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) values (- 10.0%; p < 0.05) were improved within 1 h of use. Wrinkle counts were reduced by up to 18.9% (p < 0.05), and brown and UV spot numbers by 5.5% (p < 0.05) and 13.2% (p < 0.05), respectively. Lactic acid-induced stinging was significantly reduced within 7 days of use, with 86.7% of subjects reporting that their skin felt calmer. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that Night Cream reduces skin damage caused by environmental factors and that its nightly use can improve clinical signs of aging with additional skin calming benefits.
