Background and objectives: Progressive myoclonic epilepsy (PME) is a group of neurological disorders characterized by recurrent myoclonic seizures with progressive neurological deterioration. We investigated the genetics of three unrelated patients with PME from Mali, a country in sub-Saharan Africa highly underrepresented in genetic and genomic research. Methods: Participants were carefully examined and phenotyped. DNA was obtained for genetic analysis including whole exome sequencing (WES). In silico prediction tools and ACMG criteria were used to assess the deleteriousness of putative candidate variants. Results: Pedigree analysis suggests autosomal recessive inheritance patterns for one family and sporadic forms of PME for the two other cases. WES identified novel homozygous missense variants in all the three patients, one each for NHLRC1, EPM2A, and NEU1. The sequence variants segregated with PME in each family and in silico studies including protein 3D structures, CADD scores and ACMG criteria suggested that they were damaging. Discussion: PME is a group of clinically heterogeneous neurological disorders. Most reported cases in the literature are from European background with only a few cases described in North Africa. We report here novel pathogenic variants in three different genes causing PME phenotypes in three unrelated Malian patients, suggesting that genetic studies of underrepresented populations may expand the genetic epidemiology of PME. These findings also emphasize the need for inclusive genetic research to ensure a more targeted diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for diverse patient populations.

Subclavian artery aneurysms are extremely rare, accounting for less than 1% all of peripheral aneurysms. They are often due to atherosclerosis or thoracic outlet syndrome and present at an average age of 47 years. Here, we present an incidental finding of an 18 mm rapidly increasing aneurysm involving the first and second part of the right subclavian artery in a woman in her 20s. To our knowledge, this is the youngest patient presenting with a right subclavian artery aneurysm who underwent surgical resection of the aneurysm with repair using interposition graft and successful re-implantation of the vertebral artery with antegrade flow. This report highlights the multidisciplinary care between vascular, interventional radiology and cardiothoracic teams at our tertiary hospital due to the complex nature of the aneurysm.

Carboplatin (Cp) is a potent chemotherapeutic agent, but its effectiveness is constrained by its associated side effects. Frankincense, an oleo-gum resin from the Boswellia sacra tree, has demonstrated cytotoxic activity against cancer cells. This study explored the synergistic potential of nanoparticles formulated from Boswellia sacra methanolic extract (BME), to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of Cp at reduced doses. Nanoparticles were prepared via the nanoprecipitation method, loaded with Cp, and coated with positively charged chitosan (CS) for enhanced cell interaction, yielding Cp@CS/BME NPs with an average size of 160.2 ± 4.6 nm and a zeta potential of 12.7 ± 1.5 mV. In vitro release studies revealed a pH-sensitive release profile, with higher release rates at pH 5.4 than at pH 7.4, highlighting the potential for targeted drug delivery in acidic tumor environments. In vitro studies on HT-29 and Caco-2 colorectal cancer cell lines demonstrated the nanoformulation's ability to significantly increase Cp uptake and cytotoxic activity. Apoptosis assays further confirmed increased induction of cell death with Cp@CS/BME NPs. Cell-cycle analysis revealed that treatment with Cp@CS/BME NPs led to a significant increase in the sub-G1 phase, indicative of enhanced apoptosis, and a marked decrease in the G1-phase population coupled with an increased G2/M-phase arrest in both cell lines. Further gene expression analysis demonstrated a substantial downregulation of the anti-apoptotic gene Bcl-2 and an upregulation of the pro-apoptotic genes Bax, PUMA, and BID following treatment with Cp@CS/BME NPs. Thus, this study presents a promising and innovative strategy for enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents using naturally derived ingredients while limiting the side effects.

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a chronic and complex condition, requiring consistent management and education. The widespread use of smartphones has opened possibilities for mobile health apps to support both patients and health care professionals in monitoring and managing PH more effectively. Objective: This study aimed to identify and assess the quality of free smartphone apps for PH targeted at either patients or health care professionals. Methods: A systematic search was conducted on freely available apps for patients with PH and health care professionals, accessed from a Spanish IP address, on Android (Google Play) and iOS (App Store) platforms. Searches were performed in October 2022 and 2023. Apps were independently analyzed by two reviewers, focusing on general characteristics. Quality assessment was based on the Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS) framework, and Mann-Whitney U tests compared mean MARS scores against specific variables. Results: In the overall study, 21 apps were identified. In the 2022 search, 19 apps were listed (9 iOS, 7 Android, 3 available on both platforms). In the subsequent 2023 search, 16 apps were identified (6 Android, 7 iOS, 3 available on both platforms). Of those identified in 2022, 14 remained available in 2023, with only 7 updated since 2022. In addition, 12 apps targeted patients or the general population, while 9 targeted health care professionals; none involved patients in the development or design. Conversely, 13 apps involving health care professionals were identified. There were 10 apps that received pharmaceutical industry funding. The primary goal for 81% (17/21) of the apps was to disseminate general information about PH. The overall mean MARS quality was acceptable in 2022 and 2023, with mean ratings of 3.1 (SD 0.6) and 3.3 (SD 0.5), respectively. The functionality category achieved the highest scores in both years, indicating ease of use and intuitive navigation. In contrast, the subjective quality domain consistently received the lowest ratings in the MARS assessment across both years. None of the apps underwent clinical testing themselves; however, 2 incorporated tools or algorithms derived from trials. The overall quality of iOS apps statistically outperformed that of Android apps in both years (P<.05). Furthermore, the involvement of health care professionals in app development was associated with enhanced quality, a trend observed in both years (P=.003 for both years). Conclusions: This review of mobile health apps for PH reveals their emergent development stage, with generally acceptable quality but lacking refinement. It highlights the critical role of health care professionals in app development, as they contribute significantly to quality and reliability. Despite this, a notable stagnation in app quality and functionality improvement over 2 years points to a need for continuous innovation and clinical validation for effective clinical integration. This research advocates for future app developers to actively engage with health care professionals, integrate patient insights, and mandate rigorous clinical validation for PH management.

Various thymol and carvacrol derivatives have been synthesized to test the anticancer activity potential. Computational methods including network pharmacology and molecular docking approaches were utilized to identify and assess the potential biological targets relating to cancer. Amongst the synthesized derivatives the ethoxy-cyclohexyl analogues were consistently the most active against a panel of 10 different cancer cell lines covering a variety of origins. Biological target predictions revealed the AKT1 protein to be a core and central target of the most active compounds. Molecular docking identified a binding pocket within this protein in which the most active compounds bind. The incorporation of computational analysis methods and conventional structure-activity approaches identified analogues of thymol and carvacrol with the highest anticancer potential, and analyzed their possible biological targets in a comprehensive manner.

Oleuropein (OLP) is a naturally occurring phenolic compound in olive plant with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential and can possibly be used in treating pancreatic injuries. This investigation aimed to follow the molecular mechanism behind the potential therapeutic effect of OLP against pancreatic injury persuaded by ischemia-reperfusion (I/R). Pancreatic I/R injury was induced by splenic artery occlusion for 60 min followed by reperfusion. Oral administration of OLP (10 and 20 mg/kg) for 2 days significantly alleviated I/R-persuaded oxidative damage and inflammatory responses in pancreatic tissue as indicated by the decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) content and increased glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, accompanied by the suppression of myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and reduced levels of interleukin-1beta (IL-1ß), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in pancreatic tissues. Furthermore, OLP treatment markedly restored the serum levels of amylase, trypsinogen-activated peptide (TAP), and lipase, with concurrent improvement in pancreatic histopathological alterations. Moreover, treatment with OLP regulated the pancreatic expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) relative to rats of the pancreatic IR group. Thus, OLP treatment significantly alleviates the I/R-induced pancreatic injury by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation in rats through downregulation of HMGB1 and its downstream NF-κB signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study was to assess the natural course of partial remission (PR) phase of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and to highlight the putative association between vitamin D receptor (VDR) (Fok1) gene polymorphism and PR phase. METHODS: Ninety participants with newly diagnosed T1D were followed up for a total of 12 months. The VDR (Fok1) rs2228570 gene polymorphism was genotyped using allelic discrimination (AD) assay. RESULTS: Fifty-four patients (60â¯%) reached PR with an average duration of 5.63 ± 2.9 months. Among remitters, the frequency of CC "FF" genotype and allelic frequency of C "F" were significantly higher (p<0.001). Furthermore, participants expressing "CC" genotype had earlier onset of PR and spent a significantly longer duration in remission (p<0.001). Younger age (p<0.001; OR 41.6; CI 12.12-142.99), absence of DKA (p<0.001; OR 16, CI 4.36-50.74), higher C-peptide levels (p<0.001; OR 19.55; CI 6.52-58.63), and presence of CC "FF" genotype of VDR (p<0.001; OR 6.74; CI 2.41-18.86) best predicted the overall occurrence of PR. CONCLUSIONS: Younger age, less extent of metabolic derangements, and expression of a CC "FF" genotype were found to influence the occurrence of PR. Data from the current study showed that the "C" allele could have a protective role on preserving residual ß-cell mass and could predict both onset and duration of PR among newly diagnosed T1D. These findings support the growing concept of future tailored precision medicine.

This study explores the dual challenges of ageism and professional recognition faced by senior nurses in healthcare settings. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 registered nurses aged 50 and older in Abha City, Saudi Arabia. The analysis revealed four key themes: experiences of ageism, its impact on professional roles, discrimination and stigmatization, and the need for organizational support. Findings indicate that age-related biases lead to significant professional marginalization, reduced job satisfaction, and emotional distress among senior nurses. The study highlights the critical need for comprehensive policies, organizational support, and cultural changes to address ageism and recognize the valuable contributions of senior nurses. Promoting an inclusive work environment and equitable professional development opportunities can enhance the overall quality of care and job satisfaction for older nurses.

AIM: To map the glycaemic variabilities and insulin requirements across different phases of the menstrual cycle and assess the efficacy and performance of the MiniMed 780G system on mitigating glycaemic variabilities during phases of the menstrual cycle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A pilot study recruiting 15 adolescent and young adult females with type 1 diabetes was conducted. Only females with regular spontaneous menstruation were enrolled in the current study. Phases of each menstrual cycle were determined as either follicular phase or luteal phase. The study analysed continuous glucose monitoring metrics during two study periods: the open loop period (OLP) and the advanced hybrid closed-loop (AHCL) period; each period lasted 3 consecutive months. RESULTS: During the OLP, the mean time in range (TIR) significantly decreased during the luteal phase compared with the follicular phase (65.13% ± 3.07% vs. 70.73% ± 2.05%) (P < .01). The mean time above range significantly increased from 21.07% ± 2.58% during the follicular phase to 24.87% ± 2.97% during the luteal phase (P < .01). After initiating the AHCL period, TIR was comparable during both phases of the menstrual cycle (P = .72), without increasing the time spent below 70 mg/dL (P > .05). Regarding insulin delivery during the AHCL period, the percentage of Auto basal and Auto correction delivered by the algorithm increased by 13.55% and 30.6%, respectively (P < .01), during the luteal phase. CONCLUSIONS: The fully automated adaptive algorithm of the MiniMed 780G system mitigated menstrual cycle-dependent glycaemic variability, successfully attaining the recommended glycaemic outcomes with a TIR greater than 70% throughout the entire menstrual cycle.

Soil salinization significantly impacts agricultural lands and crop productivity in the study area. Moreover, freshwater scarcity poses a significant obstacle to soil reclamation and agricultural production. Therefore, eco-friendly strategies must be adopted for agro-ecosystem sustainability under these conditions. A study conducted in 2022 and 2023 examined the interaction effects of various soil mulching materials (unmulched, white plastic, rice straw, and sawdust) and chitosan foliar spray application (control, 250 mg L-1 of normal chitosan, 125 mg L-1 of nano chitosan, and 62.5 mg L-1 of nano chitosan) on the biochemical soil characteristics and productivity of common beans in clay-saline soil. Higher organic matter, available nutrient content, and total bacteria count in soils were found under organic mulching treatments (rice straw and sawdust). In contrast, the white plastic mulching treatment resulted in the lowest values of soil electrical conductivity (EC) and the highest soil water content. Conversely, chitosan foliar spray treatments had the least impact on the chemical properties of the soil. Plants sprayed with 62.5 mg L-1 of nano chitosan exhibited higher chlorophyll content, plant height, fresh weight of shoots and roots, seed yield, and nutrient content compared to other chitosan foliar spray applications. All treatments studied led to a significant reduction in fungal communities and Na% in plants. The combined effect of organic mulch materials and foliar spray application of 62.5 mg L-1 nano chitosan appeared to enhance biochemical saline soil properties and common bean productivity.

A high-performance liquid chromatographic method (HPLC) with UV detection is described for determination of ceftriaxone sodium (CFX) and cefotaxime sodium (CFM) content in pharmaceutical industrial wastewater. These methods are based on the detection of these antibiotics via the formation of chelate complexes with Cu(II). The developed Liquid Chromatographic method offers symmetric peak shape, good resolution and reasonable retention time for both drugs. The removal percentage reached about 100 and 92.1% at pH 7.2 for CFX and CFM, respectively. In UV detection, the removal of the chelating antibiotics were based on forming of chelate complexes with Cu(II) which detected at λmax = 253 and 244 nm for CFX and CFM, respectively. Linearity, accuracy and precision were found to be acceptable over the concentration range of 5.99-59.86 µg mL-1 for CFX and 14.33-71.63 µg mL-1 for CFM. The proposed method can be used for the quality control of industrial wastewater containing CFX and CFM.

BACKGROUND: Hydroxyapatite (HA) coated femoral stems were introduced to enhance the biological fixation at the implant-bone interface, aiming to increase the longevity and survival of the prostheses. We aimed to assess the long-term outcomes of an HA ceramic (HAC) coated stem in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA), assess the stem survival, and clinically evaluate the patients using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and radiological evaluation of stem osseointegration. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective evaluation of a retrospective cohort of 385 patients (442 hips) who underwent primary THA between June 2008 and December 2018. The mean age was 63.83 years (range, 30-82 years). During the follow-up duration, 23 patients died, and 36 patients (38 hips) were lost to follow-up. Prospective data collected for 326 patients (381 hips) was used to evaluate stem survival with the Kaplan-Meier method using aseptic loosening or any revision as the endpoint. Clinical evaluation was done using the EuroQol five-dimension (EQ-5D) scoring system and PROMs using the Oxford Hip Score (OHS) and Merle D'Aubigne Postel (MDP) score. Radiological assessments were performed using the Engh radiological criteria for stem osteointegration. RESULTS: The mean follow-up duration was 9.39 years (range, 4-14.5 years). The survival of the HAC-coated femoral stem was 100% (95% confidence interval [CI], 96.7-100%) at 14 years with aseptic loosening as the endpoint, and 98.9% (CI, 96.7-100%) at 14 years with stem revision for any reason as the endpoint. The mean OHS was 44.5 (range, 30-48), and the mean MDP score was 15.87 (range, 10-18). Radiological evaluations showed full osseointegration of all stems. CONCLUSION: This HAC-coated femoral stem has shown excellent survivorship, functional outcomes, and full osseointegration at the final follow-up.

Objective: There is still much to be discovered regarding the etiopathogenesis and management of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Materials and Methods: Four groups of female Wister-Albino rats were established, each with a normal estrous cycle: control, D ( + ) galactose (D-galactose), Lepidium sativum (L. sativum), and prepared secondary antibody (Ab2). Serum samples were collected, and histopathological examination was performed on ovaries and spleen tissues. Immunoreactive anti-ovarian antibody (AOA) quantities were determined using a modified antigen-based ELISA procedure. ELISA assay kits were used to quantify FSH, LH, and estradiol 17 ß concentrations. Results: The study found that AOA concentration in undiluted samples was significantly higher in the second and fourth weeks after PCOS induction by D-galactose (p < 0.001). However, antibody index% and titer elevated in the D-galactose group. L. sativum's late efficacy was observed in the fourth week, while the concentration of undiluted samples in the D-galactose + Ab2 group lowered (p < 0.001). Higher basal FSH and LH levels and lower estrogen levels are associated with PCOS development. L. sativum's immunomodulatory properties may contribute to this association. Estradiol-17ß concentrations increased in D-galactose + L. sativum and D-galactose + Ab2 groups, respectively. Conclusion: Careful extrapolation of experimental models is crucial for clinical applications, as technical advancements make Ab2 production easier. Further study is needed to fully understand its potential in immunotherapy.

How patient and tumor factors influence clearance margins and the number of Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) stages when treating basal cell carcinoma (BCC) remains widely uncharacterized. It is important to elucidate these relationships, as surgical outcomes may be compared nationally between colleagues. Our objective is to evaluate the relationships between defect size and patient demographics, as well as between BCC subtypes and the number of MMS stages. Our second objective is to compare practice patterns and characteristics of patients requiring MMS at academic centers and private practices. A retrospective chart review was performed using data collected at academic centers (2015-2018) and private practices (2011-2018) of BCC patients older than 18 years old who underwent MMS. In total, 7651 patients with BCC requiring MMS were identified. Academic center adjusted analyses demonstrated clearance margins 0.1 mm higher for every year's increase in age (p < 0.0001) and 0.25 increase in MMS stages for high-risk BCC (p < 0.0001). Private practice adjusted analyses demonstrated clearance margins 0.04 mm higher for every year's increase in age (p < 0.0001). Clearance margins correlate with older age, and additional MMS stages correlate with high-risk BCC, suggesting the role patient and tumor factors may play in predicting tumor clearance and MMS stages.

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) refractory to multiple therapies may require a combination of drugs targeting different mechanisms and targets. In this retrospective, multicentre, international study, we report the safety and effectiveness of avatrombopag and fostamatininb in combination administered to 18 patients with multirefractory ITP. Overall, the combination response was achieved in 15 patients (83.3%), with a median time from combination start to best response of 15 days (IQR: 8-35 days). After a median follow-up of 256 days (IQR: 142.8-319), 5 patients relapsed (26.7%), all during tapering or stopping one drug. Adverse events were described in 6 of 18 patients (33%).

The chemical profiles of both Zygophyllum album (Z. album) aerial parts and roots extracts were evaluated with LC-ESI-TOF-MS/MS analysis. Twenty-four compounds were detected. Among them, some are detected in both the aerial parts and the roots extracts, and others were detected in the aerial parts only. The detected compounds were mainly flavonoids, phenolic compounds, triterpenes and other miscellaneous compounds. Such compounds contribute to the diverse pharmacological activities elicited by the Z. album species. This study aimed to elucidate the antiepileptic effect of Z. album aerial parts and roots crude extracts against pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced kindling in mice. Male albino mice were divided into four groups, eight animals each. All groups, except the control group, were kindled with PTZ (35 mg/kg i.p.), once every alternate day for a total of 15 injections. One group was left untreated (PTZ group). The remaining two groups were treated prior to PTZ injection with either Z. album aerial parts or roots crude extract (400 mg/kg, orally). Pretreatment with either extract significantly reduced the seizure scores, partially reversed the histological changes in the cerebral cortex and exerted antioxidant/anti-inflammatory efficacy evinced by elevated hippocampal total antioxidant capacity and SOD and catalase activities, parallel to the decrement in MDA content, iNOS activity and the TXNIB/NLRP3 axis with a subsequent decrease in caspase 1 activation and a release of IL-1ß and IL-18. Moreover, both Z. album extracts suppressed neuronal apoptosis via upregulating Bcl-2 expression and downregulating that of Bax, indicating their neuroprotective and antiepileptic potential. Importantly, the aerial parts extract elicited much more antiepileptic potential than the roots extract did.

While Moringa oleifera Lam. is gaining importance in Africa, especially sub-Saharan Africa, it is unclear whether research is following the quick pace of its development on the continent. Therefore, this article analyzes the landscape of research dealing with moringa in Africa. This systematic review draws upon 299 eligible articles identified through a search carried out on the Web of Science in April 2023. Research on M. oleifera is rather recent in Africa but interest is increasing among scholars. While the research field is multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral, the literature seems to focus on biological and environmental sciences. Moreover, research is performed mainly in South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, and Ghana. The analysis suggests a significant potential contribution of moringa to food security and nutrition, climate change mitigation/adaptation, farming systems resilience, and livelihoods. Its versatility and diverse applications and uses make moringa particularly interesting for developing countries, such as African ones. However, this review also underscores some factors hindering its development. Therefore, there is a need to strengthen research on moringa to unlock its potential in Africa. Investments in research, innovation, and development can help address the many challenges that Africa faces and contribute to the transition towards sustainable and resilient food systems.

Sesamum indicum L. (Pedaliaceae) is one of the most economically important oil crops in the world, thanks to the high oil content of its seeds and its nutritional value. It is cultivated all over the world, mainly in Asia and Africa. Well adapted to arid environments, sesame offers a good opportunity as an alternative subsistence crop for farmers in Africa, particularly Niger, to cope with climate change. For the first time, the variation in genome size among 75 accessions of the Nigerien germplasm was studied. The sample was collected throughout Niger, revealing various morphological, biochemical and phenological traits. For comparison, an additional accession from Thailand was evaluated as an available Asian representative. In the Niger sample, the 2C DNA value ranged from 0.77 to 1 pg (753 to 978 Mbp), with an average of 0.85 ± 0.037 pg (831 Mbp). Statistical analysis showed a significant difference in 2C DNA values among 58 pairs of Niger accessions (p-value < 0.05). This significant variation indicates the likely genetic diversity of sesame germplasm, offering valuable insights into its possible potential for climate-resilient agriculture. Our results therefore raise a fundamental question: is intraspecific variability in the genome size of Nigerien sesame correlated with specific morphological and physiological traits?

OBJECTIVE: To study the safety and efficacy of intravitreal infliximab administered at the conclusion of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) in the treatment of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) associated with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). DESIGN: Randomized controlled phase II clinical trial. SUBJECTS: Patients with primary RRD and grade C PVR, according to the updated Retina Society Classification. METHODS: Sixty-six patients were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to undergo PPV and silicone oil (SO) injection with or without intravitreal injection of 1 mg/0.05 mL of infliximab in the air-filled globe before SO injection at PPV conclusion. Surgeons were masked to treatment allocation until PPV conclusion. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome measure was anatomic success (defined as complete retinal reattachment without a tamponade at 6 months post SO removal). Secondary outcome measures were final best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), single-operation success rate (SOSR), rate of recurrent detachment, central macular thickness (CMT) by macular OCT, macular function by multifocal electroretinogram, and macular vascular density (VD) by OCT angiography. RESULTS: Sixty eyes of 60 patients, 30 eyes in each group, completed the study. At baseline, there were no differences regarding age, gender, history of trauma, lens status, duration of RRD, BCVA, intraocular pressure (IOP), intraocular inflammation (IOI), detachment extent in clock hours, number/size of breaks, presence of vitreous hemorrhage, axial length, or grade/extent of PVR between both groups. For the outcome measures, 30 eyes in the infliximab group achieved anatomic success vs. 29 eyes in the control group. The SOSR was higher in the infliximab group (26) vs. the control (23), but this was not statistically significant (P = 0.317). Final logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution BCVA was better in the infliximab group (mean, 0.96; standard deviation [SD], 0.4; Snellen equivalent ≈ 20/180) vs. the control (mean, 1.14; SD, 0.4); Snellen equivalent ≈ 20/280; P = 0.044). There were no differences regarding IOP, IOI, time of SO removal, macular function, CMT, or VD. CONCLUSIONS: Pars plana vitrectomy with SO tamponade with or without intravitreal infliximab is effective in treating PVR-associated RRD. Infliximab may be associated with modest improvement in final visual outcomes but not anatomic outcomes. BACKGROUND: This study investigates a novel idea about the foliar application of nanoparticles as nanofertilizer combined with a natural stimulant, blue-green algae Spirulina platensis L. extract, as a bio-fertilizer to achieve safety from using nanoparticles for enhancement of the growth and production of the plant. Thus, this experiment aimed to chemically synthesize copper nanoparticles via copper sulfate in addition to evaluate the impact of CuNPs at 500, 1000, and 1500 mg/L and the combination of CuNPs with or without microalgae extract at 0.5, 1, and 1.5 g/L on the morphological parameters, photosynthetic pigments accumulation, essential oil production, and antioxidant activity of French basil. RESULTS: The results revealed that foliar application of CuNPs and its interaction with spirulina extract significantly increased growth and yield compared with control, the treatments of 1000 and 1500 mg/L had less impact than 500 mg/L CuNPs. Plants treated with 500 mg/L CuNPs and 1.5 g/L spirulina extract showed the best growth and oil production, as well as the highest accumulation of chlorophylls and carotenoids. The application of CuNPs nanofertilizer caused a significant increase in the antioxidant activity of the French basil plant, but the combination of CuNPs with spirulina extract caused a decrease in antioxidant activity. CONCULOSION: Therefore, foliar application of natural bio-fertilizer with CuNPsis necessary for obtaining the best growth and highest oil production from the French basil plant with the least damage to the plant and the environment.
