BACKGROUND Several auxiliary features have been proposed to achieve sustainable retention for short-prepared dental crowns; however, achieving retention is challenging. This study aimed to assess the impact of increased total occlusal convergence and auxiliary preparation factors like box and groove on the retention form of short tooth preparations. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighty resin machine-milled dies with a height of 3 mm and a deep chamfer margin of 1 mm were prepared to mimic the short-prepared molar. Initially, 2 teeth were prepared following the guidelines, and the total occlusal convergence was kept at 10° and 20°, respectively. Auxiliary features such as the proximal box and buccal groove were prepared on separate 20° dies. Eighty dies were prepared with 10 samples each for 10°, 20°, 20° with proximal box and 20° with buccal groove for zirconia (n=40) and metal crowns (n=40). Cementation was done with glass ionomer luting cement, and a pull-off test was conducted. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc fisher least significant difference test (P<0.05). RESULTS The highest mean was observed in the proximal box group with the metal crown (14.59), and the lowest in the group with 20° zirconia crowns (9.12). Within groups, the highest retentive values were found for the 20° taper with proximal box preparation; the lowest was for the 20° taper group. CONCLUSIONS Within the study limitations, it could be concluded that incorporating a proximal box or buccal groove in short tooth preparations with an increased total occlusal convergence improved retentive values.

BACKGROUND This study evaluated the effects of milling (CADCAM), 3D printing, preparation taper angles (10-degree and 20-degree), auxiliary retentive features (groove and box), and provisional cement types (conventional and resin-based) on the adhesive failure stress of 3-mm short provisional crowns (PC). The research was motivated by the need to understand how digital dentistry technologies impact the retention and durability of provisional crowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 160 working models (3D-printed) and PCs [80 milled (CopraTemp)/80 printed (Asiga)] were fabricated from two 10- and 20-degree typodont master models and two 20-degree 3D-printed master models (groove and box), simulating a 3 mm high all-ceramic short PC. After provisional cementation with conventional (Kerr TempBond) and resin-based (ProviTemp) cements, 16 subgroups (n=10 each) underwent thermocycling (10 000 cycles; 5-55°C) and pull-off tests on a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test. RESULTS Conventional cement failed at lower stress for milled (47.68 to 73.54) and printed (48.40 to 77.91) as compared to resin cement for milled (104.2 to 137.27) and printed (184.85 to 328.84), respectively, with significant differences. Increased taper and groove decreased failure load except for the printed PC/resin cement combination. Use of proximal box preparation increased retention significantly. Except for 20-degree taper cemented with conventional cement, the differences in auxiliary retentive features for milled and printed provisional crowns were statistically significant at P≤0.05. CONCLUSIONS 3D-printed PC, resin-based cement, 10-degree taper, and proximal box preparation were associated with higher retention than milled, conventional cements, 20-degree taper, and vertical groove.

PURPOSE: Ki-67 expression levels in breast cancer have prognostic and predictive significance. Therefore, accurate Ki-67 evaluation is important for optimal patient care. Although an algorithm developed by the International Ki-67 in Breast Cancer Working Group (IKWG) improves interobserver variability, it is tedious and time-consuming. In this study, we simplify IKWG algorithm and evaluate its interobserver agreement among breast pathologists in Ki-67 evaluation. METHODS: Six subspecialized breast pathologists (4 juniors, 2 seniors) assessed the percentage of positive cells in 5% increments in 57 immunostained Ki-67 slides. The time spent on each slide was recorded. Two rounds of ring study (R1, R2) were performed before and after training with the modified IKWG algorithm (eyeballing method at 400× instead of counting 100 tumor nuclei per area). Concordance was assessed using Kendall's and Kappa coefficients. RESULTS: Analysis of ordinal scale ratings for all categories with 5% increments showed almost perfect agreement in R1 (0.821) and substantial in R2 (0.793); Seniors and juniors had substantial agreement in R1 (0.718 vs. 0.649) and R2 (0.756 vs. 0.658). In dichotomous scale analysis using 20% as the cutoff, the overall agreement was moderate in R1 (0.437) and R2 (0.479), among seniors (R1: 0.436; R2: 0.437) and juniors (R1: 0.445; R2: 0.505). Average scoring time per case was higher in R2 (71 vs. 37 s). CONCLUSION: The modified IKWG algorithm does not significantly improve interobserver agreement. A better algorithm or assistance from digital image analysis is needed to improve interobserver variability in Ki-67 evaluation.

Background: Despite the longstanding psychosocial impact of the interactable conflict in Somalia for the last 30 years, there is lack of epidemiological studies of mental health conditions, especially at the population level. Objectives: The aim of this study is to fill the epidemiological gap and provide population based data on mental health conditions in the South-Central region of Somalia. The specific objectives were: (1) To determine the epidemiological patterns of mental disorders in three sites; Baidoa, Dolow and Kismayo, (2) Understand the socio-demographic characteristics associated with mental health conditions in the study sites, and (3) To assess the correlates between psychological trauma and the mental wellbeing of the population. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 713 respondents recruited from the three sites namely Dolow, Baidoa and Kismayo. Data on sociodemographic characteristics and mental disorders were collected using the MINI and sociodemographic questionnaire. Basic descriptive statistics were used to summarize sociodemographic characteristics. Univariable and multivariable logistic regressions were used to examine factors associated with common mental disorders. Statistical significance was considered at a value of p <0.05. Results: Participants' mean age was 32.6 (±10.7) years. More than half (58.5%) of the respondents were male. The overall prevalence of common mental disorders was 557 (78.1%) with panic disorder (39.3%), generalized anxiety disorders (34.9%), major depressive episode current (32.1) and PTSD (29.9%). According to the multivariable logistic regression analysis, being male AOR = 1.74 (95%CI = 1.25, 2.42), having a family size of more than 10 members AOR =1.37 (95% CI = 1.00, 1.89), being unemployed AOR = 1.90 (95%CI = 1.18, 3.06), experienced starvation AOR =3.46 (95%CI = 2.23, 5.37), khat use AOR = 5.87 (955 CI, 1.75-19.65), were identified as predicting factors for the common mental disorders among the study participants. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of mental disorders with anxiety disorders being the commonest. Findings reflect earlier studies that showed higher rates in conflict and post-conflict settings. It also aligns with past studies in Somalia. As such, there is an urgent need to integrate mental health and psychosocial support within the primary healthcare and other service sectors such as education considering the vast majority of the population are young.

AIMS: Metastatic HER2-low breast cancer (HLBC) can be treated by trastuzumab deruxtecan. Assessment of low levels of HER2 protein expression suffers from poor interobserver reproducibility. The aim of the study was to evaluate the interobserver agreement among subspecialised breast pathologists and develop a practical algorithm for assessing HLBC. METHODS: Six breast pathologists (4 juniors, 2 seniors) evaluated 106 HER2 immunostained slides with 0/1+expression. Two rounds (R1, R2) of ring study were performed before and after training with a modified Ki-67 algorithm, and concordance was assessed. RESULTS: Agreement with 5% increments increased from substantial to almost perfect (R1: 0.796, R2: 0.804), and remained substantial for three categories (<1% vs 1%-10% vs >10%) (R1: 0.768, R2: 0.764). Seniors and juniors had almost perfect agreement with 5% increments (R1: 0.859 and 0.821, R2: 0.872 and 0.813). For the three categories, agreement remained almost perfect among seniors (R1: 0.837, R2: 0.860) and substantial among juniors (R1: 0.792, R2: 0.768). Binary analysis showed suboptimal agreement, decreasing for both juniors and seniors from substantial (R1: 0.650 and 0.620) to moderate (R2: 0.560 and 0.554) using the 1% cut-off, and increasing from moderate to substantial (R1: 0.478, R2: 0.712) among seniors but remaining moderate (R1: 0.576, R2: 0.465) among juniors using the 10% cut-off. The average scoring time per case was higher (72 vs 92 s). CONCLUSIONS: Subspecialised breast pathologists have suboptimal agreement for immunohistochemical evaluation of HLBC using the modified Ki-67 methodology. An urgent need remains for a new assay/algorithm to reliably evaluate HLBC.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) causes significant morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including Somalia. Among diabetic patients, diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) constitute the largest proportion of admissions, amputations, and mortality. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of diabetic foot ulcers and subsequently determine factors associated with it among diabetic patients at three major hospitals in Somalia. Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 193 diabetic patients between August and November 2022. All eligible diabetes patients who were attending De Martini Hospital, Madina General Hospital, and Deynile General Hospital during the study period were included in the study. Patients were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. We collected demographic, clinical, and behavioral variables from all participants. A bivariate and multivariable logistic regression model was fitted to identify factors associated with diabetic foot ulcer. An odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval was computed to determine the level of significance. Result: The mean age of the study's participants was 50.9 ± 13.6 years. The prevalence of diabetic foot ulcer was 15%. Patients who were either overweight or obese (OR 4.63, CI: 2.08-10.30), had a lack of family support in managing diabetes (OR 3.33, CI: 1.74-6.36), and did not check their feet regularly were more likely to develop DFU (OR 1.99, CI:1.08-3.66). Conclusion: Increased body mass index, lack of family support, and not checking feet regularly were associated with DFUs. The high prevalence of DFUs and the plethora of needs of people with DFUs pose challenges for health care. A coordinated health care system is necessary to meet the needs of diabetic patients and prevent DFUs.

Insecticides are widely used as the primary management strategy for controlling Myzus persicae, the devastating pest ravaging various vegetables, fruits, crops, and ornamentals. This study examined the susceptibility of M. persicae field populations to bifenthrin, fosthiazate, acetamiprid, spirotetramat, afidopyropen, and flonicamid while exploring the possible metabolic mechanisms of resistance. The study findings revealed that M. persicae field populations exhibited susceptible-to-moderate resistance to bifenthrin (resistance ratio (RR) = 0.94-19.65) and acetamiprid (RR = 1.73-12.91), low-to-moderate resistance to fosthiazate (RR = 3.67-17.00), and susceptible-to-low resistance to spirotetramat (RR = 0.70-6.68). However, all M. persicae field populations were susceptible to afidopyropen (RR = 0.44-2.25) and flonicamid (RR = 0.40-2.08). As determined by the biochemical assays, carboxylesterases were involved in the resistance cases to bifenthrin and fosthiazate, whereas cytochrome P450 monooxygenases were implicated in the resistance cases to acetamiprid. However, glutathione S-transferases were not implicated in the documented resistance of M. persicae field populations. Overall, the susceptibility of M. persicae field populations to flonicamid and afidopyropen-two unregistered insecticides in Saudi Arabia-suggests their potential as promising chemicals that can expand the various alternatives available for controlling this devastating pest. Although the detected moderate levels of resistance to bifenthrin, fosthiazate, and acetamiprid indicate a shift in the selection pressure of insecticides for M. persicae due to Saudi regulations, which have resulted in eventual obsolescence of conventional insecticides in favor of novel insecticides. Finally, rotational use of aforementioned insecticides can help in managing insecticide resistance in M. persicae.

Musca domestica L., a pest of animals and humans, has developed resistance to alpha-cypermethrin, a pyrethroid insecticide commonly used to control medically important pests in many countries, including Saudi Arabia. We investigated the mechanism underlying the development of alpha-cypermethrin resistance and life history characteristics of alpha-cypermethrin-susceptible (Alpha-SS) and alpha-cypermethrin-resistant (Alpha-RS) M. domestica using the age-stage, two-sex life table theory, which is crucial for developing a future rational management strategy and minimizing the negative effects of alpha-cypermethrin on the environment. Our results showed that Alpha-RS M. domestica had a 405.93-fold increase in resistance to alpha-cypermethrin relative to Alpha-SS M. domestica. This increase in the resistance toward insecticide was attributed to metabolic enzymes, such as glutathione S-transferases, specific esterases, and cytochrome P450 monooxygenases. Furthermore, Alpha-RS M. domestica exhibited lower relative fitness (0.50), longevity, survival rate, life expectancy, reproductive values, intrinsic rate of increase, net reproductive rate, fecundity, maternity, and finite rate of increase, along with shorter larval, female preadult, and adult durations than Alpha-SS M. domestica, indicating fitness costs associated with most parameters. However, no significant differences were found between the strains in the following parameters: egg, pupa, and male preadult durations; adult preoviposition, total preoviposition, and oviposition periods; female ratio; and total generation time. Additionally, Alpha-RS M. domestica had a markedly lower intrinsic rate of increase, net reproductive rate, and finite rate of increase than Alpha-SS M. domestica. The results of this study suggest that alpha-cypermethrin resistance may lead to dominant fitness costs in M. domestica. Overall, these findings will aid in the development of rational control strategies for M. domestica as well as help to reduce pesticide pollution.

Background: Salmonella is a leading cause of severe economic losses in poultry and foodborne illness in humans worldwide. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and multidrug resistance of Salmonella Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) in several chicken abattoirs in Tripoli, Libya. The study includes the South, East, and West regions of Tripoli. Methods: Each region was assigned five slaughterhouses. Each chicken slaughterhouse was visited three times to collect samples. Five samples were taken at random from the neck skin, crop, and spleen. The total number of samples collected from all regions was 675. Bacterial isolation and identification, as well as antibiotic sensitivity testing, were performed on these samples. Results: Salmonella spp. was found to be 15% prevalent, and S. Enteritidis was found to be 7% prevalent. The south region of Tripoli had the highest S. Enteritidis (9%), while the west region had the highest Salmonella spp. (22%). Salmonella prevalence increased significantly (p < 0.01) higher in the spleen (13%) as compared with the crop (5%) and neck (7%). Based on bacterial resistance pattern, Salmonella spp. isolated from the spleen had the highest multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index of 0.86 in the south region followed by MAR indexes of 0.8 and 0.46 in the West and East, respectively. Conclusion: Isolation of Salmonella from the spleen may indicate chickens' systemic infection and failure to control the most important microbe for public health. Thus, the control measures have to be revised and a national Salmonella control program should be put in place urgently.

Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) is a rare inherited autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder. Despite several reports on MPS I-related neonatal interstitial lung disease, it is still considered to be an under-recognized disease manifestation. Thus, further study of MPS I is required to improve specific therapies and management strategies. The current report describes a late preterm baby (36 weeks gestational age) with neonatal onset of interstitial lung disease eventually diagnosed as MPS I. The neonate required prolonged respiratory support and oxygen supplementation that further escalated the likely diagnosis of inherited disorders of pulmonary surfactant dysfunction. Whole-exome sequencing confirmed the diagnosis of MPS I, following the observation of low levels of the enzyme α-L-iduronidase. The results highlight the necessity of considering MPS I-related pulmonary involvement in newborns with persistent respiratory insufficiency.

Background: Vibrios are aquatic bacteria causing Vibriosis in humans and aquatic animals. Vibriosis is a significant disease of cultured and wild fish. Aim: The present study aimed to address the impact of Vibrios on the health status of Trachurus trachurus inhabiting the coastal area of Tripoli. Methods: A total of 100 samples of (T. trachurus) were collected randomly from the Western Coast of Tripoli and Bab Al-Baher market, throughout the period from spring 2019 to summer 2019. All the sampled fish were examined externally and internally and lesions were recorded. Bacterial isolation from the liver and kidney was carried out using the appropriate culture media. Tissue samples were taken from the liver, kidney, and spleen in 10% neutral buffered formalin for a histopathology examination. The tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin to assess morphologically and Perl's Prussian blue for the demonstration of ferric iron. Results: On average 69% of the infected fish exhibited at least one pathological lesion. Vibrios were recovered from 90% of the examined fish. The histopathological changes of the liver showed severe congestion of blood vessels (BVs), mononuclear cell infiltration surrounding a bile duct, granular degeneration and coagulative necrosis of hepatocytes in the centrilobular area, marked vacuolar degeneration of hepatocytes, activation of melano-macrophage centers (MMCs), multiple cysts of nematode in hepatic tissue (incidental finding). The histopathological alterations of the kidney showed severe congestion of BVs, vacuolar degeneration of the renal tubular epithelium, severe interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration, and marked activation of MMCs in the kidney. Moreover, congestion of BVs and marked activation of melano-macrophages (MMCs) were found in the spleen. The MMCs of most of the sampled tissues showed a strong positive reaction for ferric iron. Conclusion: The polluted aquatic environment by sewage at Tripoli Coast is an essential factor for triggering the pathogenicity and invasion of Vibrios to vulnerable Atlantic horse mackerel. Also, this study is a preliminary step to give a baseline for further future studies on epidemiology and control of Vibrio infection in Libyan fish.

Musca domestica L., the common house fly, is a cosmopolitan carrier of human and livestock disease pathogens. The species exhibits resistance to many insecticides; therefore, effective M. domestica insecticide resistance management programs are required worldwide. In the present study, the development of alpha-cypermethrin resistance, realized heritability (h2), instability of resistance trait (DR), and cross-resistance (CR) was investigated in an alpha-cypermethrin-selected M. domestica strain (Alpha-Sel) across 24 generations (Gs). Compared with an alpha-cypermethrin-unselected strain (Alpha-Unsel), resistance to alpha-cypermethrin increased from 46.4-fold (G5) to 474.2-fold (G24) in Alpha-Sel females and 41.0-fold (G5) to 253.2-fold (G24) in Alpha-Sel males. Alpha-cypermethrin resistance declined by between -0.10 (G5) and -0.05 (G24) in both M. domestica sexes without insecticide exposure for 24 generations. The h2 of alpha-cypermethrin resistance was 0.17 and 0.18 for males and females, respectively, in G1-G24. With selection intensities of 10-90%, the G values required for a tenfold increase in the LC50 of alpha-cypermethrin were 6.3-53.7, 4.1-33.8, and 3.0-24.7, given h2 values of 0.17, 0.27, and 0.37, respectively, and a constant slope of 2.1 for males and h2 values of 0.18, 0.28, and 0.38, respectively, and a constant slope of 2.0 for females. Compared with Alpha-Unsel, Alpha-Sel M. domestica exhibited moderate CR to bifenthrin (15.5-fold), deltamethrin (28.4-fold), and cyfluthrin (16.8-fold), low CR to two pyrethroids and five organophosphates, and no CR to insect growth regulators. The instability of resistance trait, low h2, and absent or low CR associated with alpha-cypermethrin resistance in M. domestica indicate resistance could be managed with rotational use of the insecticide.

Aplasia cutis congenita type VI is a genetic disorder that presents with congenital skin absence, blistering, and nail abnormalities. We present the case of a male newborn who presented with an absence of skin in the entire left leg and the lower part of the left thigh. On the second day of life, he had new skin lesions that started to appear over the fingernail beds, nasal bridge, thighs, and buttocks. There were no other associated anomalies such as pyloric atresia, renal abnormalities, or ureteral stenosis. A diagnosis of Bart's syndrome was made based on clinical diagnosis and previous presentation in the family. The patient developed sepsis and osteomyelitis of the lower limb and eventually died.

The mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus is a vector of various pathogens including West Nile virus, Saint Louis encephalitis virus, and Western equine encephalitis virus. Insecticides are the main tools for Cx. quinquefasciatus control, but this overreliance on chemical tools has led to the development of resistance to many insecticides in this important insect vector. The resistance of eight field populations of Cx. quinquefasciatus to 10 commonly used insecticides was evaluated. Based on the resistance ratios (RRs), the adults of Cx. quinquefasciatus field populations displayed susceptibility to the organophosphates (OPs) except Al-Masanie adults which exhibited low resistance to fenitrothion (RR50 = 3.62). Conversely, the mosquitoes exhibited susceptibility, low resistance, and moderate resistance to the pyrethroids alpha-cypermethrin (RR = 0.59-2.56), bifenthrin (RR = 0.59-2.19), deltamethrin (RR = 0.60-7.07), cypermethrin (RR = 0.60-2.66), and cyfluthrin (RR = 0.58-2.39). At the larval stage, Cx. quinquefasciatus field populations displayed susceptibility to low resistance to the OPs chlorpyrifos (RR = 0.03-1.75), malathion (RR = 0.19-3.42), fenitrothion (RR = 0.11-2.78), and pirimiphos-methyl (RR = 0.08-1.15). Although these results in Cx. quinquefasciatus field populations indicated that the OPs and pyrethroids maintained high efficacy in controlling this species in the geographical area of this study, these findings should be utilized wisely to avoid any potential negative effects on human health and environmental safety attributable to the application of these broad-spectrum conventional insecticides. However, these findings provide a solid basis for decision-making for Cx. quinquefasciatus integrated vector management programs.

Tuberculosis is caused by an infectious bacterium and it has significant morbidity and mortality rates globally. It mostly affects the lungs, but it can also spread to other parts of the body, like the lymph nodes (tuberculous lymphadenitis). The most common way to treat it is with the RIPE regimen, which includes rifampin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol. The drugs can be slowly or rapidly metabolized, resulting in either increased toxicity or subtherapeutic drug levels. In this paper, we discuss the case of a slow responder who was treated with increased rifampin and isoniazid doses and improved clinically and biochemically. It's the first case of a slow responder diagnosed with tuberculous lymphadenitis reported in the Gulf region.

Earias vittella Fabricius is a potential cotton and okra pest in South Asia. The realized heritability, risk assessment, and inheritance mode of Bacillus thuringiensis Kurstaki (Btk) resistance were determined in the Dipel-selected (DIPEL-SEL) E. vittella. The DIPEL-SEL strain had a 127.56-fold rise in Dipel resistance after nine generations compared to the laboratory reference strain (LAB-PK). The overlapping of 95% fiducial limits in the median lethal concentrations (LC50s) of the F1 (DIPEL-SEL♂ × LAB-PK♀) and F1ǂ (DIPEL-SEL♀ × LAB-PK♂) suggested a lack of sex linkage and an autosomal Dipel resistance. The dominance (DLC) values for the F1 (0.86) and F1ǂ (0.94) indicated incompletely dominant resistance to Dipel. Backcrossing of the F1♀ × Lab-PK♂ revealed a polygenic response of resistance to Dipel. The realized heritability estimation (h2) of resistance to Dipel was 0.19. With 20% to 90% selection mortality, the generations required for a tenfold increase in LC50 of Dipel were 4.7-22.8, 3.1-14.9, and 2.3-11.1 at h2 of 0.19, 0.29, and 0.39, respectively, and a constant slope of 1.56. At slope values of 2.56 and 3.56 with a constant h2 = 0.19, 7.7-37.4 and 10.6-52.0 generations were needed to increase the tenfold LC50 of Dipel in the DIPEL-SEL E. vittella. It is concluded that the DIPEL-SEL E. vittella has an autosomal, incompletely dominant, and polygenic nature of resistance. The h2 of 0.19 suggested that a high proportion of phenotypic variation for the Dipel resistance in E. vittella was heritable genetic variation. The present results will support the creation of an effective and suitable resistance management plan for better control of E. vittella.

Culex quinquefasciatus is a major vector of several pathogens and is capable of breeding in various aquatic habitats. The extensive and injudicious use of synthetic chemicals against the mosquito species has led to the problem of insecticide resistance. To explore this resistance in detail, toxicity bioassays of imidacloprid, acetamiprid, emamectin benzoate, spirotetramat, and indoxacarb were performed on five Cx. quinquefasciatus field populations from Pakistan in addition to a laboratory susceptible strain. Compared with the susceptible strain, results for the five Cx. quinquefasciatus field populations were as follows: susceptibility to high resistance against imidacloprid (resistance ratio (RR): 0.09-11.18), susceptibility to moderate resistance against acetamiprid (RR: 0.39-8.00), susceptibility to emamectin benzoate (RR: 0.002-0.020), susceptibility to spirotetramat (RR: 0.01-0.07), and low to high resistance against indoxacarb (RR: 3.00-118.00). Correlation analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between imidacloprid, acetamiprid, and spirotetramat median lethal concentration (LC50) values, indicating the possibility of cross-resistance. In contrast, there were no significant correlations between the LC50 values of other tested insecticides, indicating the possible absence of cross-resistance. These results can assist public health authorities, medical entomologists, and pest managers to manage the insecticide resistance of Cx. quinquefasciatus as well as the associated pollution and human health issues.

Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional information on demographics, symptomatic disease status, ABO blood group, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) was collected among 100 patients who were earlier tested positive for COVID-19 reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and were now reporting to the College of Dentistry for routine treatment after recovery. Objective evaluation of olfactory and gustatory disturbances was elicited using the Connecticut Chemosensory Clinical Research Center (CCCRC) test and gustatory function testing. Furthermore, OHRQoL was assessed using Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). Results: More than half of the patients (62%) had some form of olfactory dysfunction/alteration, and 42% had poor CCCRC scores. About 14% reported ageusia, while 68% reported some form of taste alterations, and 55% reported poor OHRQoL. A statistically significant difference was reported between different ABO blood groups and subjective loss of smell (p < 0.05). The subjective loss of taste, CCCRC score, and dysgeusia were found to be independent of OHIP-14 (p > 0.05), but the taste intensity score was dependent on OHIP 14 (p < 0.05). Moreover, a majority (70.8% and 70.0%) with poor OHIP-14 scores had taste intensity scores of 3 and 4, respectively, while those with moderate (68.4% and 48.6%) OHIP-14 had scored 1 and 2, respectively. Conclusion: Olfactory and gustatory disturbances were found to be a long-term feature in post-COVID-19 patients. The blood group is a predisposing factor for persistent smell alterations in post-COVID-19 patients.

The Musca domestica L. is a well-known vector for a number of livestock and human diseases. One major challenge for maintaining effective control of this pest is its propensity to develop resistance to insecticides. This study utilized laboratory selection and realized heritability methods to examine the risk of resistance development to diflubenzuron in Musca domestica L. Cross-resistance (CR) to fourteen other insecticides was measured in diflubenzuron-selected (Diflu-SEL) strain which was selected for 20 generations. The resistance ratio (RR) of Diflu-SEL larvae to diflubenzuron increased from 30.33 in generation five (G5) to 182.33 in G24 compared with the susceptible strain, while realized heritability (h2) was 0.08. The number of needed generations (G) for a tenfold increase in the median lethal concentration (LC50) for diflubenzuron ranged from 4 to 45 at h2 values of 0.08, 0.18, and 0.28, at a slope of 1.51. At h2 = 0.08 and slopes of 1.51, 2.51, and 3.51, the number of needed G for a tenfold increase in the LC50 ranged from 9 to 104. The level of CR shown by the Diflu-SEL strain to all other fourteen tested insecticides (insect growth regulators, organophosphates, and pyrethroids) was either absent or very low compared to the field population. The value of h2 and the absent or low CR indicate potential successful management of resistance to diflubenzuron and recommend the use of the tested insecticides in rotation with diflubenzuron to control M. domestica.

The house fly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), is one of the major vectors of several pathogens that affect humans and animals. We evaluated the toxicity of eight insecticides commonly used for house fly control using five field populations collected from dairies in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Among the five tested pyrethroids, non to moderate resistance was found in adults of both sexes compared to a susceptible strain. Resistance ratios ranged from 0.5- to 7-fold for alpha-cypermethrin, 2- to 21-fold for deltamethrin, 4- to 19-fold for bifenthrin, 1- to 9-fold for cyfluthrin, and 1- to 8-fold for cypermethrin. Among the three tested organophosphates, low to moderate resistance was found among adult flies compared to the susceptible strain, and the resistance ratios ranged from 4- to 27-fold for fenitrothion, 2- to 14-fold for chlorpyrifos, and 3- to 12-fold for malathion. The median lethal times for the tested insecticides were 3-33 h for alpha-cypermethrin, 3-24 h for deltamethrin, 5-59 h for bifenthrin, 1-7 h for cypermethrin, 0.3-7 h for cyfluthrin, 6-36 h for fenitrothion, 2-21 h for chlorpyrifos, and 3-34 h for malathion. This study presents baseline data pertaining to registered public health insecticides, and the results will assist future studies monitoring insecticide resistance, and the planning of effective integrated vector management programs.
