RESUMO

The existence of an accessory middle cerebral artery (AMCA) usually has no pathological significance. Three patients developed cerebral infarction due to thromboembolic occlusion of the main trunk of the middle cerebral artery (MCA). In these patients, AMCA originating from the anterior cerebral artery was intact, and ran to the lateral side along the main MCA. Emergency endovascular treatment to remove the thrombus in the main MCA was performed, and MCA was recanalized. In one patient, the main MCA re-occluded and cerebral infarction developed on the next day. The diameter of AMCA is commonly smaller than that of the main MCA. Therefore, volume of ischemic region depends on the collateral blood flow to the left MCA territory by AMCA. Once an anomalous MCA is detected in a patient with cerebral infarction involving the MCA territory, close examinations to assess the anatomy of both the main and anomalous MCA are mandatory.

We report a rare case of an aneurysm originating from the penetrating artery of the distal middle cerebral artery (MCA). A 76-year-old man without a notable past history presented with sudden-onset severe headache, left hemiparesis, and a decreased level of consciousness. Computed tomography (CT) revealed subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in the right temporal lobe extending into the ventricle. Contrast-enhanced CT (CE-CT) demonstrated a focus of contrast enhancement (CE) adjacent to the hematoma in the right frontal lobe. An aneurysm fed by a penetrating artery branching off from the right distal MCA was found on angiography. The patient underwent emergency resection of the aneurysm and hematoma evacuation. Histological analysis revealed that arterial dissection may be an associated factor in the pathogenesis of this peripheral aneurysm formation. A focus of CE within or adjacent to the hematoma may be useful for diagnosing this peripheral aneurysm. ICH can result in a life-threatening situation. Therefore, microsurgery may be the first treatment choice for aneurysms in this location.

BACKGROUND: Hemifacial spasm (HFS) caused by vertebral artery (VA) aneurysms is rare. Several cases of HFS caused by VA aneurysms treated by endovascular parent artery occlusion (PAO) have been reported. Recently, we treated a rare case of HFS caused by a saccular VA aneurysm at the bifurcation of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA), which was successfully treated by endovascular coil embolization, preserving the parent artery, and PICA. We discuss endovascular treatment for HFS induced by VA aneurysms with a literature review. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 59-year-old man presented with the left HFS persisting for 2 months. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a left saccular VA-PICA aneurysm and demonstrated that a left facial nerve was compressed by the aneurysm at the root exit zone. Angiography revealed that the PICA was branching from the aneurysm neck. Endovascular coil embolization was performed using the balloon remodeling technique to preserve the left VA and PICA. HFS disappeared after treatment. CONCLUSION: Although microvascular decompression was commonly accepted for the standard treatment of HFS, coil embolization of aneurysms without PAO may be an effective treatment for HFS caused by VA aneurysms.

This study focused on a culture system of aerial microalgae with the decomposition of casein protein for obtaining bioactive compounds such as peptides with inhibitory activity against angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). The aerial microalga Vischeria helvetica exhibited growth in Bold's basal medium supplemented with casein protein as nitrogen source. The algal cells secreted protease and amino oxidase into the medium, and ammonium ions as a nitrogen source was produced by the conjugated-enzyme reaction. Furthermore, a bioactive peptide with ACE-inhibitory activity was efficiently produced from casein protein by the proteases secreted under light conditions. The results presented will facilitate the development of production systems for useful materials from photosynthetic microorganisms and casein protein in a culture medium.

Non-destructive approaches based on the application of optical spectroscopy are important for monitoring carotenoid accumulation in a whole cell cultured under various conditions. A simple and rapid assay utilizing aerial microalgae helps to identify stress conditions that can efficiently enhance the carotenogenesis in photosynthetic organisms. The spectra of cell suspensions were characterized in the aerial microalga Coelastrella sp. KGU-Y002, which are unicellular and undifferentiated. Total carotenoid contents could be successfully estimated on the basis of the absorbance values of the cell suspensions and calibration data analyzed by HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography). A novel screening method, the so-called "whole-cell-based screening method" for carotenoid assays (WCA), was developed based on this procedure. It was possible to investigate the effects of various stresses on carotenoid accumulation in the aerial microalga by adapting this bioassay to a 96-well microtiter plate. When bioactive compounds were screened from our library of plant extracts using this method, an active compound was identified from the plant extract.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the roles of fatty acid biosynthesis in carotenogenesis in the high-lipid accumulating aerial microalga Vischeria helvetica KGU-Y001, we cultured algal cells with fatty acid biosynthesis inhibitors. RESULTS: Under nitrogen-deficient, high-light (200 µmol photons m(-2) s(-1)) conditions, the alga accumulated 6.2 mg carotenoids g(-1) dry weight cells (DWC) after 1 week of culture. The total fatty acid content increased gradually, and reached 290 mg g(-1) DWC after 9 weeks. When algal cells were cultured with a fatty acid biosynthesis inhibitor (molinate) under nitrogen-deficient, high-light conditions for 1 week, carotenoid accumulation was synergistically increased to 2.4 times that in algal cells cultured without the inhibitor in nitrogen-deficient, low-light conditions (40 µmol photons m(-2) s(-1)). The synergistic induction of carotenogenesis was suppressed by an inhibitor of c-jun N-terminal kinase, a mitogen-activated protein kinase-like protein. CONCLUSION: In a commercial context, carotenoid production could be increased by using fatty acid biosynthesis inhibitors to redirect metabolic flux to carotenoid biosynthesis instead of fatty acid synthesis.

Aerial algae are considered to be highly tolerant of and adaptable to severe conditions including radiation, desiccation, high temperatures, and nutrient deficiency, compared with those from aquatic habitats. There are considerable variations in the fatty acid (FA) composition of aerial microalgae from dry environments. A new species with a high lipid level was found on concrete surfaces and was identified as Coccomyxa sp. KGU-D001 (Trebouxiophyceae). This study characterized its FA content and profile in a bath culture. The alga showed a constant specific growth rate (0.26 day(-1)) ranging in light intensity from 20 to 80 µmol photons m(-2) s(-1). The algal cells started to form oil bodies in the early stationary phase of growth, and oil bodies occupied most of the cells during the late stationary phase when the cells accumulated 27 % total fatty acids (TFA). The process of lipid body formation accumulating large amounts of triacylglycerols (TAG) appeared to be very unusual in response to stress conditions persisting for a relatively long culture time (50 days). This study could indicate that aerial microalgae will be a candidate for biodiesel production when a new cultivation method is developed using extreme stresses such as nutritional deficiency and/or desiccation.

The growth and ammonium uptake of the aerial microalga Coelastrella striolata var. multistriata, which was isolated from the surface of rocks, were characterized in this study. The specific growth rate of the alga was mu=0.3 d(-1), as calculated in the growth logarithmic phase. The algal cells were able to remove almost 100% of the ammonium ions from medium in 5 d, with the removal rate of ammonium-N being 0.4 mg/l/h. It was shown that the alga has a unique ability to be a reddish orange to green color depending on the nitrogen source concentration in the medium. Astaxanthin, adonixanthin, canthaxanthin, and beta-carotene were found in the reddish orange cells of the alga. The assessment of water pollution was attempted using this aerial microalga. When the reddish orange alga was incubated in the experimental medium with added ammonium-, nitrate-, or urea-N as a nitrogen source, an approximately linear relationship existed between the nitrogen concentration and chlorophyll formation. Using the chlorophyll formation of the alga, for example, it was possible to estimate spectrophotometrically the total nitrogen content in water collected from aquatic systems. Biofunctional materials for environmental biomonitoring using photosynthetic microorganisms are called green devices in this study.
