RESUMO

Postharvest fungal diseases cause serious fruit losses and food safety issues worldwide. The trend in preventing food loss and waste has shifted to environmentally friendly and sustainable methods, such as biological control. Penicillium expansum is a common postharvest contaminant fungus that causes blue mould disease and patulin formation on apples. This study aimed to provide biocontrol using Metschnikowia pulcherrima isolates against P. expansum, and to understand their antagonistic action mechanisms. In vitro, 38.77-51.69% of mycelial growth inhibition of P. expansum was achieved by M. pulcherrima isolates with the dual culture assay, while this rate was 69.45-84.89% in the disc diffusion assay. The disease symptoms of P. expansum on wounds were reduced by M. pulcherrima, on Amasya apples. The lesion diameter, 41.84 mm after 12 d of incubation in control, was measured as 24.14 mm when treated with the most effective M. pulcherrima DN-MP in vivo. Although the antagonistic mechanisms of M. pulcherrima isolates were similar, there was a difference between their activities. In general, DN-HS and DN-MP isolates were found to be more effective. In light of all these results, it can be said that M. pulcherrima isolates used in the study have an antagonistic effect against the growth of P. expansum both in vitro and in vivo in Amasya apples, therefore, when the appropriate formulation is provided, they can be used as an alternative biocontrol agent to chemical fungicides in the prevention of postharvest diseases.

RESUMO

The myrtle (Myrtus communis) plant naturally grows in the temperate Mediterranean and subtropical regions and is used for various purposes; thus, it is among the promising species of horticultural crops. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the performance of different propagation systems, including rooting, solid media propagation, rooting, and with the Plantform bioreactor system, in achieving healthy and rapid growth of four myrtle genotypes with diverse genetic origins and well-regional adaptation. The selection of myrtle genotypes with distinct genetic backgrounds and proven adaptability to specific regions allowed for a comprehensive assessment of the propagation systems under investigation. Present findings proved that the Plantform system, the new-generation tissue culture system, was quite successful in micropropagation and rooting myrtle genotypes. We succeeded in vitro micropropagation and rooting of diverse wild myrtle genotypes, enabling year-round propagation without reliance on specific seasons or environmental conditions. The process involved initiating cultures from explants and multiplying them through shoot proliferation in a controlled environment. This contributes to sustainable plant propagation, preserving and utilizing genetic resources for conservation and agriculture.

RESUMO

Fungi-induced postharvest diseases are the leading causes of food loss and waste. In this context, fruit decay can be directly attributed to phytopathogenic and/or mycotoxin-producing fungi. The U.N. Sustainable Development Goals aim to end hunger by 2030 by improving food security, sustainable agriculture, and food production systems. Antagonistic yeasts are one of the methods presented to achieve these goals. Unlike physical and chemical methods, harnessing antagonistic yeasts as a biological method controls the decay caused by fungi and adsorbs and/or degrades mycotoxins sustainably. Therefore, antagonistic yeasts and their antifungal mechanisms have gained importance. Additionally, mycotoxins' biodetoxification is carried out due to the occurrence of mycotoxin-producing fungal species in fruits. Combinations with processes and agents have been investigated to increase antagonistic yeasts' efficiency. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive summary of studies on preventing phytopathogenic and mycotoxigenic fungi and their mycotoxins in fruits, as well as biocontrolling and biodetoxification mechanisms.

RESUMO

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the frequency of musculoskeletal adverse effects in acne vulgaris patients receiving systemic isotretinoin treatment. Patients and methods: Between January 2016 and December 2017, a total of 200 severe acne patients (22 males, 178 females; mean age: 21.8±0.4 years; range, 15 to 53 years) who were on isotretinoin treatment were retrospectively analyzed. Data including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), duration of disease, diagnosis, and comorbidities were recorded. Back pain severity was evaluated with the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Results: The treatment period was mean 8.5±0.1 (range, 6 to 12) months. The dose of isotretinoin was mean 0.6±0.1 (range, 0.5 and 1) mg/kg. Musculoskeletal side effects were seen in 99 (49.5%) patients. Back pain was reported during the treatment period in 78 (78.7%) patients. The diagnosis was mechanical back pain in 31 (39.7%) and inflammatory back pain in 47 (60.3%) patients. The moderate-severe back pain group received higher cumulative isotretinoin doses than the mild back pain group (p=0.003). The BMI values did not show a significant difference between the patients with and without back pain (p=0.55). There was no significant correlation between the BMI and VAS scores (p=0.06). The VAS scores were found to be correlated with age (p=0.04). Sacroiliitis was diagnosed in four (4%) patients. One (1%) patient was diagnosed with enthesitis. Creatine kinase elevation was reported in 18 (18.1%) patients, while three (3%) patients described myalgia of mild severity. Conclusion: Low back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal side effects of isotretinoin treatment that usually resolves with dose reduction. The cumulative dose of isotretinoin does not seem to play a role in the development of back pain, but can determine pain severity. Pain severity is directly correlated with the increasing age. Evaluation of the patients for musculoskeletal side effects during isotretinoin use is important in clinical practice, as it is a common occurrence.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Banana is largely grown in tropical and subtropical climates. It is rich in various food components and has quite a high economic value. Unavailable ecological and agricultural conditions cause quantitative and qualitative losses in banana cultivation. Along with global climate change, drought stress is becoming prominent day by day. METHODS AND RESULTS: Micropropagation and rooting performance of Azman and Grand Naine banana cultivars were investigated under in vitro drought stress conditions. The expression levels of four different genes of CDPK gene family in leaf and root tissues of the rooted plants were determined with the use of qRT-PCR. Greater expression levels of four MaCDPK genes were seen in Azman cultivar than in Grand Naine cultivar. MaCDPK9 and MaCDPK21 had greater expression levels in root tissue and MaCDPK1 and MaCDPK40 genes in leaf tissues. CONCLUSIONS: Response of different banana cultivars to in vitro drought stress was determined in this study. The expression levels of the genes of CDPK gene family with a significant role in drought stress had significant contributions in elucidation of banana plant response to drought stress.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In this study, our aim was to evaluate the relationship of the quantitative data obtained from pretreatment 68Ga prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET-computerized tomography (PET/CT) with treatment response of the patients with the diagnosis of metastatic castrationresistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) who received 177Lu-PSMA radioligand therapy (RLT). METHODS: The patients who were given three or four cycles of 177Lu-PSMA RLT between January 2016 and June 2018 were evaluated retrospectively. Volumetric data; PSMA tumor volume (TV) and total lesion (TL) PSMA, were obtained from 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT for whole (PSMA-TVT and TL-PSMAT). The distance between the two furthest lesions (Dmax) was calculated. Posttreatment early prostate-specific antigen (PSA) values on the fourteenth day after treatment were obtained. According to the PSA responses, the patients were divided into two groups as progressed and nonprogressed. In univariate analysis, the relationship of PET quantitative data with biochemical response groups was evaluated with Mann-Whitney U test. Logistic regression was used in multivariate analysis. RESULTS: A total of 38 patients were included in the study. In univariate analysis, Dmax, PSMA-TVT and TL-PSMAT values were obtained at lower levels in the progressed group. In multivariate analysis, only Dmax was found to be a prognostic factor in predicting early biochemical response. CONCLUSION: Dmax is the most prognostic parameter in predicting the early biochemical response in patients with mCRPC; high total tumor volume and burden are also parameters that give us an idea about the response to treatment. The success rate will be higher if 177Lu-PSMA RLT treatment is planned for patients with higher tumor volume and spread.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the frequency of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) in rosacea patients and the relationship between disease disability score of FMS and quality of life score of rosacea. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional controlled clinical trial was performed between December 2017 and December 2018. One hundred female rosacea patients (mean age 43.2±10.1; range, 21 to 65 years) and 100 age- and sex-matched control subjects (mean age 41.2±11.1; range, 22 to 68 years) with no history of skin disease and systemic diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular, renal and hepatic diseases were recruited. Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) scores were calculated using a 10-item self-administered questionnaire. The diagnosis of FMS was established according to 2010 American College of Rheumatology diagnostic criteria. Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) was used to determine the clinical severity and functional disability, while Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used to determine pain severity in the patients with FMS. RESULTS: The frequency of FMS in patient group was significantly higher than control group (p=0.019). The mean duration of FMS in patient group was significantly higher than control group (p=0.001). There was no significant difference in terms of the age of onset of FMS, FIQ and VAS scores between groups (p=0.53, p=0.54, p=0.07, respectively). DLQI scores were significantly correlated with FIQ scores in the patient group (r=0.43, p=0.008). CONCLUSION: The frequency of FMS in rosacea patients was significantly higher than control subjects without any skin disease and there was a correlation between disability score of FMS and quality of life score of rosacea. Investigating fibromyalgia symptoms in rosacea patients may be helpful for providing patient-based therapeutic approaches where neurologically based treatments may also be beneficial for rosacea.

RESUMO

Human papillomavirus infection is relatively common in communities. Thus, determining an effective and painless treatment method, especially in pediatric patients is of utmost importance. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of three different methods of treating plantar warts in pediatric patients. Children with verruca plantaris treated with a salicylic acid-lactic acid combination once daily (SA/LA 1), a salicylic acid-lactic acid combination applied in three to seven layers under occlusion every 3 days (SA/LA 2), or a combination of 5-fluorouracil (0.5%) and salicylic acid (10%) (SA/5-FU) were evaluated retrospectively. Treatment responses and recurrence rates were also evaluated after a minimum of 4 months. Among the 98 children with verruca plantaris, 19 were treated with SA/LA 1, 53 were treated with SA/LA 2, and 18 were treated with SA/5-FU; the eight patients who received cryotherapy were excluded. The mean treatment duration was significantly shorter in the SA/LA 2 group than in the SA/LA 1 group and the SA/5-FU group. (p = 0.000 for both) Application of a salicylic acid-lactic acid combination in multiple layers under occlusion is a safe, painless, and effective treatment method for plantar warts in children.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the heart's endocardial surface. In recent years, nuclear imaging methods have gained importance in the diagnosis of IE. The present study aims to investigate the imaging potential of 99mTc-labeled vancomycin (99mTc-Vancomycin) as a new agent that would enable the diagnosis of IE in its early stages when it is difficult to diagnose or has small vegetation in the experimental rat model. METHODS: 99mTc-Vancomycin scintigraphy was evaluated for its accumulation in IE with Staphylococcus aureus performed in an experimental rat model. Serial planar scintigraphic and biodistribution analysis of infected vegetations are compared to rats with sterile vegetations. The heart was identified as an infected organ, the liver was identified as a non-infected organ and the heart/liver uptake ratio (T / NT ratio) was compared between infective endocarditis and sterile endocarditis groups. RESULTS: Planar scintigrams (in vivo measurements) showed more uptake in the heart of rats in the infective endocarditis group compared to the uptake in the heart of rats in the sterile endocarditis group, but this difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). From the ex vivo measurements, the 99mTc-Vancomycin heart uptake increased significantly (p = 0.016), liver uptake was significantly decreased (p = 0.045) and the T/NT ratio was significantly higher (p = 0.014) in the infective endocarditis group compared to the sterile endocarditis group. CONCLUSION: In this experimental study, 99mTc-Vancomycin scintigraphy ensured the detection of ex vivo infected tissue in a rat model of IE. In addition, the absence of significant 99mTc-Vancomycin uptake in the sterile endocarditis group indicates that this agent targeted the infected tissue instead of the sterile inflammatory tissue. Finally, this agent should also be evaluated with animal- specific imaging devices.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of 18F-FDG PET/CT texture analysis to predict the exact pathological outcome of thyroid incidentalomas. METHODS: 18F-FDG PET/CT images between March 2010 and September 2018 were retrospectively reviewed in patients with focal 18F-FDG uptake in the thyroid gland and who underwent fine needle aspiration biopsy from this area. The focal uptake in the thyroid gland was drawn in 3D with 40% SUVmax threshold. Features were extracted from volume of interest (VOI) using the LIFEx package. The features obtained were compared in benign and malignant groups, and statistically significant variables were evaluated by receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis. The correlation between the variables with area under curve (AUC) value over 0.7 was examined; variables with correlation coefficient less than 0.6 were evaluated with machine learning algorithms. RESULTS: Sixty patients (70% train set, 30% test set) were included in the study. In univariate analysis, a statistically significant difference was observed in 6 conventional parameters, 5 first-, and 16 second-order features between benign and malignant groups in train set (p < 0.05). The feature with the highest benign-malignant discriminating power was GLRLMRLNU (AUC:0.827). AUC value of SUVmax was calculated as 0.758. GLRLMRLNU and SUVmax were evaluated to build a model to predict the exact pathology outcome. Random forest algorithm showed the best accuracy and AUC (78.6% and 0.849, respectively). CONCLUSION: In the differentiation of benign-malignant thyroid incidentalomas, GLRLMRLNU and SUVmax combination may be more useful than SUVmax to predict the outcome.

RESUMO

Acne vulgaris is a multifactorial skin disorder. Many etiological factors are speculated to contribute to the pathogenesis of acne, one of these is vitamin D deficiency. Previous studies reported contradictory results about serum 25 hydroxy vitamin D (25-OH vitamin D) levels, its association with acne, some claimed that acne lesion might improve with vitamin D supplementation. We aimed to assess serum 25-OH vitamin D levels in acne patients, identify their relation with disease severity in a larger study group. The study included 134 acne patients, 129 controls. Acne disease severity was identified with Global Acne Grading Scale (GAGS) scores. Serum 25-OH vitamin D levels were measured in all groups. Serum 25-OH vitamin D levels were significantly lower in acne patients than in controls (P < .001). The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was significantly higher in acne group than in control group (77.6% vs 63.9%; P = .041). There was a negative-strong statistically significant correlation detected between serum 25-OH vitamin D levels and GAGS scores in patient group (P < .001; r = -.910). According to these results, we claim that evaluating serum 25-OH vitamin D levels in acne patients, vitamin D supplementation as a treatment option may be a consideration for further studies.

RESUMO

Hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer (HLRCC) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by cutaneous leiomyomas (CLM), uterine leiomyomas, and the increased risk of renal cell carcinoma. Piloleiomyomas develop from the arrectorpili muscle and are usually painful. For 22% of the affected patients, the pain is reported to impair their life quality. Since there are few case reports about cryotherapy for cutaneous leiomyomas in the literature, we have decided to present three patients who had painful cutaneous leiomyomas treated with cryotherapy.

RESUMO

Long-lasting allergic patch test reactions (LLAPTR) are reactions that remain positive for two weeks or more after the application of the allergen. LLAPTR of longer than 6 weeks duration is rarely seen. Here we present a 54-year-old female patient who had a positive allergic reaction to bacitracin with the thin layer rapid use epicutaneous test (TRUE test), which lasted for about 11 weeks duration. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of LLAPTR related to the bacitracin.

RESUMO

AIM: Ashy dermatosis (AD) is a cutaneous pigmentation disorder with unknown etiology characterized by ash-colored hyperpigmented macules. The diagnosis of Ashy dermatosis is primarily based on the clinical and histopathological findings. In this study, we aimed to identify the dermoscopic features of AD, which may facilitate the diagnosis by reducing the need for invasive procedures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included the patients diagnosed with Ashy dermatosis. Demographic, clinical, dermoscopic and histopathological features of the lesions were reviewed and the findings observed were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 60 lesions from 15 patients were included. The most common dermoscopic finding were irregular linear dots and globules, pinkish brown color was the predominant color of the background, and found to be associated with early lesions. Among the vascular structures observed, irregular linear vessels were the most prevalent. There were no significant differences in terms of dermoscopic structures according to age and localization of the lesions. CONCLUSION: Dermoscopy can serve as a noninvasive helpful tool for the diagnosis of Ashy dermatosis.

RESUMO

Background/aim: Pyogenic granuloma (PG)-like nodular Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) has been previously demonstrated in several studies. However, to the best of our knowledge, no original study investigating the dermoscopic differential diagnosis of PG and KS exists in the relevant literature. In this study we aimed to identify dermoscopic findings providing useful clues to differential diagnosis between the two entities. Materials and methods: Patients with histopathologically confirmed PG or nodular KS were included in the study. Demographic, clinical, dermoscopic, and histopathological findings of the cases were retrospectively reviewed. Results: The most common finding observed in PG was red structureless areas (80.00%), followed by intersecting thick white lines (56.66%), ulceration (36.66%), and collarette scale (33.33%). The most common findings detected in nodular KS were polychromatic structures (56.66%) and red (46.66%) and white (13.33%) structureless areas, respectively. Conclusion: Intersecting thick white lines seem to be the strongest dermoscopic clue to PG. Striate surface scaling (n = 6) was a novel finding identified for PG. Here we also described a new vascular pattern (widespread vessels composing a network) for nodular KS.
