RESUMO

The fallopian tube, connecting the uterus with the ovary, is a dynamic organ that undergoes cyclical changes and is the site of several diseases, including serous cancer. Here, we use single-cell technologies to construct a comprehensive cell map of healthy pre-menopausal fallopian tubes, capturing the impact of the menstrual cycle and menopause on different fallopian tube cells at the molecular level. The comparative analysis between pre- and post-menopausal fallopian tubes reveals substantial shifts in cellular abundance and gene expression patterns, highlighting the physiological changes associated with menopause. Further investigations into menstrual cycle phases illuminate distinct molecular states in secretory epithelial cells caused by hormonal fluctuations. The markers we identified characterizing secretory epithelial cells provide a valuable tool for classifying ovarian cancer subtypes. Graphical summary: Graphical summary of results. During the proliferative phase (estrogen high ) of the menstrual cycle, SE2 cells (OVGP1 + ) dominate the fallopian tube (FT) epithelium, while SE1 cells (OVGP1 - ) dominate the epithelium during the secretory phase. Though estrogen levels decrease during menopause, SE post-cells (OVGP1 + , CXCL2 + ) make up most of the FT epithelium.

RESUMO

Neurological deterioration during an episode of diabetic ketoacidosis is usually assumed to be caused by cerebral oedema. We present a case of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis presenting in a similar manner, also associated with severe iron deficiency anaemia. Computed tomography scanning provided the correct diagnosis and allowed institution of anticoagulation with improvement in neurological outcome. Neuroimaging should always be performed in suspected cerebral oedema associated with diabetic ketoacidosis in order to exclude other pathologies.

RESUMO

Analysis of deaths from sports and leisure activities in England and Wales during 1982-88 found that horse riding (98 deaths), air sports (92 deaths), motor sports (86 deaths) and mountaineering (74 deaths) were the most hazardous activities. The most hazardous activity for children was horse riding (19 deaths). The commonest activities resulting in drowning in adults were swimming (128 deaths) and fishing (82 deaths). The main drowning deaths in children followed swimming (24 deaths). When exposure was taken into account, mountaineering, motor sports and horseriding were found to be the most hazardous activities. Mountaineering was one hundred times more dangerous than ball games or water sports. We can expect an increase in sport and leisure accidents in the next few years. Strict control, sensible safety precautions and adequate training are paramount if we are to see any improvement.

RESUMO

Fluoride concentrations were measured in mandibles of 112 male roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) aged 1-6 years, from 5 localities in England and Scotland; also in bone from sections cut in series from orbit to antler-top of 10 other roe deer. Fluoride concentrations in mandibles were mostly within values expected from unpolluted areas, but approached those expected from moderately polluted areas at the upper end of their range, which extended from 43 to 901 microg g(-1). There were large variations in mandibular fluoride content between individual animals within each age group, and an upward trend of fluoride content with increasing age. There were also considerable differences in mandibular fluoride content between localities. No gradient in fluoride concentration was evident between the upper part of the skull and various points along the antler in 9 roe deer. A tenth animal showed an increase of 65% in fluoride concentration between the skull and the top of the antler, with exceptionally high values ranging from 1220 to 2010 micro g(-1). For 3 red deer (Cervus elaphus), no significant differences in fluoride concentrations were found between trabecular and cortical antler bone.
