RESUMO

In the current research, the silicon carbon oxynitride (SiCON) thin film was deposited on the silicon (Si) substrate by radio frequency (RF) reactive magnetron sputtering method. To comprehensively assess the impact of nitrogen flux rate on thin film characteristics, a suite of advanced analytical methods was utilized. The GIXRD analysis confirmed that the SiCON thin film is amorphous in structure. Additionally, Raman spectroscopy detected no graphite nanocrystals within the film. Ellipsometry measurements further showed that the refractive index of the thin films rises with increased nitrogen flux in the reactive gas, indicating a direct correlation between nitrogen concentration during deposition and optical properties. Based on the designs made with McLeod's software, the amount of reflection can be reduced up to 5.7 % at the wavelength of 4 µm and up to 8.5 % in the wavelength range of 3-5 µm for an optimal thickness thin film. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) examination revealed that the surface roughness of the thin films decreases as the nitrogen flux in the reactive gas mixture increases. Additionally, measurements of the water contact angle (WCA) indicated that the SiCON thin films exhibit a hydrophilic state.

OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal discomforts (MSDs) are prevalent occupational health issues that are associated with a wide range of risk factors. This study aimed to investigate some of the occupational hidden risk factors and the mediating role of sleep in work-related musculoskeletal discomforts. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, the role of job stress and shift work as two hidden risk factors and sleep problems as the mediator in work-related musculoskeletal discomforts was investigated in 302 healthcare workers using the path analysis models. For this aim, healthcare workers' Occupational Stress and musculoskeletal discomforts were evaluated using the Health and Safety Executive questionnaire and Cornell questionnaire, respectively. Moreover, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) were used to examine the sleep characteristics of participants. Shift work and job stress as predictor variables and sleep characteristics as mediating variables were analyzed. RESULTS: The results showed that the path coefficients of job stress on indexes of quality sleep and insomnia severity were significant. Also, the path coefficient of shift work on quality sleep index was significant. In return, the path coefficients of shift work on the insomnia severity index were not significant. Additionally, there was a mutually significant association between indexes of quality sleep and the severity of insomnia and musculoskeletal discomforts. The direct effect coefficient of job stress on MSDs was significant, whereas the direct effect coefficient of shift work on MSDs was insignificant. This means that shift work alone does not significantly impact these disorders. CONCLUSION: It would seem that shift work and job stress as two occupational hidden risk factors can mediate sleep indexes and indirectly play a critical role in the incidence of musculoskeletal discomforts. Moreover, sleep disorders and musculoskeletal discomforts are mutually related and have a bidirectional relationship.

Introduction: Suicide is a major issue of concern for public health. It is estimated that suicide accounts for 700,000 deaths every year. A personal history of one or more suicide attempts is the most important determinant of suicide among the general population. This study aimed to assess the major risk factors associated with suicidal behaviors among Iranian employees in a medical setting. Methods: In this study, 3,913 employees of Tehran University of Medical Sciences who participated in the employees' cohort study conducted by the university were recruited. Suicidal behaviors (SBs) and their associated risk factors were evaluated using the World Mental Health Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) Version 3.0. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed to identify the determinants of SBs among the participants, and crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated. Results: Overall, 49.6% of respondents (n = 1,939) reported that they were tired of life and thinking about death. The lifetime prevalence rate of suicidal ideation (SI) was 8.1% (n = 317), that of suicide planning (SP) was 7.3% (n = 287), and that of suicide attempts (SA) was 3.1% (n = 122). Being female (OR: 1.87, CI: 1.64-2.12), being divorced (OR: 3.13, CI: 1.88-5.22), having a low level of education (OR: 1.57, CI: 1.15-2.14), and working in clinical and medical services (OR: 1.25, CI: 1.09-1.43) were associated with being tired of life and thinking about death. These factors were also associated with SI, SP, and SA. Discussion: These findings highlight the need to prioritize mental health for suicide prevention, especially for high-risk groups, in workplace mental health promotion programs and policies.

BACKGROUND: Various tools have previously been introduced to predict the recuperation and mortality of patients in intensive care units and to classify them, which have particular advantages and disadvantages compared to each other. The present study compared the prediction power of mortality of trauma and non-trauma patients admitted to the ICU by SOFA and APACHE IV tools. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, patients admitted to the ICU of Kowsar Hospital in Sanandaj from the beginning of April 2020 to the end of December 2020 were assessed. Data were collected in the form of a questionnaire based on APACHE IV and SOFA criteria as well as the demographic information questionnaire. All collected data related to the first 24 h of patients' hospitalization was analyzed in SPSS V16 software using Chi-square, Mann-Whitney, Cox regression and Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS: This study was performed on 404 patients admitted to the ICU, Out of which 273 people (67.6%) were male, 208 (51.5%) trauma patients and 196 (48.5%) non-trauma ones. Patients' mean age was 54.76 ± 20.77 years and their average length of stay in the hospital was 10.05 ± 8.49 days. In general, the AUC obtained by APACHE IV tool (0.902) was slightly better than that of SOFA tool (0.895). However, in a specific study of traumatic and non-traumatic patients, it was found that APACHE IV and SOFA tools had better performance in predicting death innon-trauma and trauma patients based on the accuracy, AUC and sensitivity, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of this study, the difference between APACHE IV and SOFA tools in predicting death of patients admitted to the ICU was very small but the function of APACHE IV was better in predicting mortality of non-traumatic patients, while the function of SOFA was better in predicting the death of traumatic cases. This represents the applicability of these two tools in different patient subgroups.

Background: The results of case-control studies on the association between vitamin D receptor gene (VDR) polymorphisms and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are inconclusive. Objective: We aimed to more precisely evaluate the correlation between the ApaI, BsmI, FokI, and TaqI VDR gene polymorphisms and PCOS susceptibility. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Science Citation Index, and Google Scholar databases were searched to retrieve related reports released up to the end of 2020. To evaluate the association strength of the VDR gene polymorphisms with PCOS risk, pooled odds ratios (OR) with a 95% confidence interval were determined. Results: In total, 1,119 subjects (560 PCOS cases and 559 controls) from 7 studies were included which met the inclusion criteria. A statistically significant association between the TaqI polymorphism and PCOS susceptibility was found in the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office population (T vs. t: OR = 0.715; TT vs. tt: OR = 0.435, p < 0.001; TT vs. Tt+tt: OR = 0.696, p = 0.01; tt vs. TT+Tt: OR = 1.791, p < 0.001). It was found that the ApaI variant was a risk factor in the dominant inheritance model (AA vs. Aa+aa: OR = 1.466, p = 0.01) and the FokI polymorphism was a protective factor in the recessive inheritance model (ff vs. FF+Ff: OR = 0.669, p = 0.04). The VDR BsmI polymorphism did not show association with PCOS susceptibility. Conclusion: Our meta-analysis revealed that the VDR ApaI in the dominant model, VDR FokI in the recessive model, and VDR TaqI polymorphisms in all genetic models are associated with vulnerability to PCOS. However, further studies with a larger sample size are required.

BACKGROUND: Covid-19 has been one of the major concerns around the world in the last 2 years. One of the challenges of this disease has been to determine its prevalence. Conflicting results of the serology test in Covid explored the need for an updated meta-analysis on this issue. Thus, this systematic review aimed to estimate the prevalence of global SARS-CoV-2 serology in different populations and geographical areas. METHODS: To identify studies evaluating the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2, a comprehensive literature search was performed from international databases, including Medline (PubMed), Web of Sciences, Scopus, EMBASE, and CINHAL. RESULTS: In this meta-analysis, the results showed that SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence is between 3 and 15% worldwide. In Eastern Mediterranean, the pooled estimate of seroprevalence SARS-CoV-2 was 15% (CI 95% 5-29%), and in Africa, the pooled estimate was 6% (CI 95% 1-13%). In America, the pooled estimate was 8% (CI 95% 6-11%), and in Europe, the pooled estimate was 5% (CI 95% 4-6%). Also the last region, Western Pacific, the pooled estimate was 3% (CI 95% 2-4%). Besides, we analyzed three of these areas separately. This analysis estimated the prevalence in subgroups such as study population, diagnostic methods, sampling methods, time, perspective, and type of the study. CONCLUSION: The present meta-analysis showed that the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 has been between 3 and 15% worldwide. Even considering the low estimate of this rate and the increasing vaccination in the world, many people are still susceptible to SARS-CoV-2.

BACKGROUND: The capacity of antibiotics to modulate bacterial virulence has raised concerns over the appropriateness of antibiotic therapies, including when dosing strategies fall below sub-therapeutic levels. In this work, we investigated the ability of antibiotics to influence virulence in Escherichia coli isolated from urinary tract infection (UTI). RESULTS: Out of 120 isolates, 32.5% carried pap, 21.7% carried hlyA, and 17.5% carried cnf. The predominant B2 phylogroup was significantly associated with the quinolone-resistant isolates. A significant association was seen between the presence of hlyA hemolysin and susceptibility to ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin (P < 0.05). Sub-inhibitory concentrations of both antibiotics reduced the levels of hlyA expression and hemolysis in isolates treated with antibiotics compared to untreated isolates (P < 0.05). Growth rate assay showed that the decrease in hlyA expression was not an effect of decreased growth rate. CONCLUSION: Our study indicated the inhibitory effect of ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone on the level of hemolysis, suggesting that the sub-inhibitory concentrations of these antibiotics may affect the outcome of infections. Further studies, including animal models may elucidate the outcome of virulence modulation by these antibiotics in UTI pathogenesis.

The present study was performed to know the effects of chronic lead exposure on serum lipids, lipoproteins, and liver enzymes in a cohort study among of lead mine workers. We followed of 200 Iranian workers for 3- years (2018-2020), 100 of them with known occupational exposure to lead thorough their work in lead mine while the others 100 were with no such exposure. Blood lead level (BLL), serum lipids, lipoproteins, and liver enzymes of the exposure group for 3- years were measured and compared with those attained in the non-exposed workers. The BLL levels of the lead-mine workers were higher than with recommended level and the non-exposed group (24.15 and 6.35 µg/dL, respectively). The findings indicated a positive and significant relationship between BLL and lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, alanine transaminase, and bilirubin levels (P < 0.01). Also while we found a negative and significant correlation between BLL and triglyceride, total protein, albumin, and globulin levels (P < 0.01). This report depicted that chronic lead exposure is a risk factor for hematological, liver, and cardiovascular diseases. Despite the fact that the level of liver function parameters was in the normal range, the results of 3- years follow-up show a significant relationship between BLL and alteration of biochemical parameters levels.

BACKGROUND: Smartphone addiction is one of the most important forms of technology addiction that has attracted the attention of all countries around the world. Many studies have been conducted in Iran on cellphone addiction among different groups. There is a necessity to have a native scale for measuring smartphone addiction in particular. Therefore, this study aimed to localize the smartphone addiction questionnaire in Iran (in the Persian language). METHODS: To assess the validity and reliability of the Persian version of the smartphone addiction scale (SAS), the questionnaire was first provided based on the standard back-translation method. Next, content validity ratio (CVR), content validity index (CVI), and face validity was evaluated for translated questionnaire. After making the necessary changes, the questionnaire was given to the community samples and was then reviewed using confirmatory factor analysis of questions grouping. Finally, the reliability of the questionnaire was investigated by the test-retest method. RESULTS: The CVR and CVI values of all questions were within the acceptable range. Only some of the questions in the original SAS version titled Twitter and Facebook were changed to Instagram and telegram according to experts. Internal consistency and concurrent validity of the questionnaire were confirmed by Cronbach's alpha of 0.951. The mean correlation coefficient between the responses of the subjects, who received the questionnaire twice, was 0.946 (0.938-0.954). The grouping of questions in the subscales was changed from the original SAS version because the fitting indexes, obtained from the confirmatory factor analysis test (for example CMIN/DF greater than 5 units and RMSEA of approximately 0.07), were not acceptable. CONCLUSION: The results showed that the Iranian version of the cellphone addiction questionnaire can be used as a valid, with minimal modification, tool for determining the level of smartphone addiction among Persian speakers.

BACKGROUND: Dental healthcare is the costliest and single most source of the financial barrier to seeking and use of needed healthcare. Hence, this study aims to analyses impact of out-of-pocket (OOP) payments for dental services on prevalence catastrophic healthcare expenditure (CHE) among Iranian households during 2018. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis to determine the prevalence rate of CHE due to use of dental healthcare services among 38,858 Iranian households using the 2018 Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) survey data of Iran. The WHO approach was used to determine the CHE due to use of dental care services at the 40% of household capacity to pay (CTP). Multiple logistic regression models were used to obtain the odds of facing with CHE among households that paid for any dental healthcare services over the last month while adjusting for covariates included in the model. These findings were reported for urban, rural areas and also for low, middle and high human development index HDI across provinces. RESULTS: The study indicated that the prevalence of CHE among households that used and did not used dental services over the last month was 16.5% (95% CI: 14.9 to 18.3) and 4.3% (95% CI: 4.1 to 4.6), respectively. The adjusted odds ratio (AOR) for the covariates revealed that the prevalence of CHE for the overall households that used dental healthcare service was 6.2 times (95% CI: 5.4 to 7.1) than those that did not use dental healthcare services. The urban households that used dental healthcare had 7.8 times (95%CI: 6.4-9.4) while the rural ones had 4.7 times (95% CI: 3.7-5.7) higher odds of facing CHE than the corresponding households that did not use dental healthcare services. CONCLUSIONS: The study indicates that out-of-pocket costs for dental care services impose a substantial financial burden on household's budgets at the national and subnational levels. Alternative health care financing strategies and policies targeted to the reduction in CHE in general and CHE due to dental services in particular are urgently required in low and middle income countries such as Iran.

BACKGROUND: Antibodies play an important role in neutralizing invading pathogens and protecting the host against re-infection. Thus, the accurate assessment of antibodies during a pandemic can provide important evidence for monitoring pathogen exposure, understanding the role of antibodies in protective immunity, and helping vaccine development. METHODS: In this study, 96 west Iranian recovered COVID-19 subjects were recruited and, based on clinical symptoms and disease severity, categorized into three different groups: mild, moderate, and severe. In addition, the presence and dynamic change of SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG antibody three, four-, and six months post symptom onset (PSO) were measured. Also, the association between IgG antibody titer with clinical symptoms and disease severity was examined. RESULTS: Although in real-time RT-PCR-positive samples negative IgG antibody results were found, most subjects mount humoral immune responses that could raise a robust SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG antibody. Furthermore, this antibody persisted in the serum of most recovered COVID-19 subjects at least six months PSO and demonstrated little to no decrease. Also, specific IgG antibody titer was strongly correlated with clinical symptoms and disease severity. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide an insight into the presence and persistence of the SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG antibody. Although serological tests could not be used as the primary diagnostic test, they may support real-time RT-PCR results. Also, they could be used for diagnosing COVID-19 subjects tested later outside of the optimal period. Thus, the SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG antibody is an excellent marker of COVID-19 infection or vaccination and provides an additional diagnostic tool for verifying results and helps monitor and control COVID-19 spread.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the percentage of households with disabled children aged 0-8 years who had faced catastrophic health expenditures (CHEs) due to the health costs of these children in Iran. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 2000 households with disabled children aged 0-8 years in five provinces of Iran in 2020. Data were collected using the World Health Survey questionnaire and face-to-face interview. Determinants of CHE were identified using logistic regression. RESULTS: 32.7% of households with disabled children had faced CHE. Head of household being female (Adjusted OR = 18.89, 95%CI: 10.88-29.42), poor economic status of the household (Q1: Adjusted OR = 20.26, 95% CI, 11.42-35.94; Q2: Adjusted OR = 8.27, 95%CI, 4.45-15.36; Q3: Adjusted OR = 13.88, 95%CI, 7.89-24.41), lack of supplementary insurance by a child with disabilities (Adjusted OR = 6.13, 95%CI, 3.39-11.26), having a child with mental disability (Adjusted OR = 2.71, 95%CI, 1.60-4.69), and type of basic health insurance (having Iranian Health Insurance: Adjusted OR = 2.20, 95%CI, 1.38-3.49; having Social security insurance: Adjusted OR = 1.66, 95%CI, 1.06-2.61) significantly increased the chances of facing CHE. CONCLUSION: A significant percentage of households with disabled children had faced CHE because of their disabled child's health costs. The key determinants of CHE should be considered by health policy-makers in order to more financial protection of these households.

Policymakers require estimates of the future number of cancer patients in order to allocate finite resources to cancer prevention, treatment and palliative care. We examine recent cancer incidence trends in Iran and present predicted incidence rates and new cases for the entire country for the year 2025. We developed a method for approximating population-based incidence from the pathology-based data series available nationally for the years 2008 to 2013, and augmented this with data from the Iranian National Population-based Cancer Registry (INPCR) for the years 2014 to 2016. We fitted time-linear age-period models to the recent incidence trends to quantify the future cancer incidence burden to the year 2025, delineating the contribution of changes due to risk and those due to demographic change. The number of new cancer cases is predicted to increase in Iran from 112 000 recorded cases in 2016 to an estimated 160 000 in 2025, a 42.6% increase, of which 13.9% and 28.7% were attributed to changes in risk and population structure, respectively. In terms of specific cancers, the greatest increases in cases are predicted for thyroid (113.8%), prostate (66.7%), female breast (63.0%) and colorectal cancer (54.1%). Breast, colorectal and stomach cancers were the most common cancers in Iran in 2016 and are predicted to remain the leading cancers nationally in 2025. The increasing trends in incidence of most common cancers in Iran reinforce the need for the tailored design and implementation of effective national cancer control programs across the country.

Engineering of 3D substrates with maximum similarity to seminiferous tubules would help to produce functional sperm cells in vitro from stem cells. Here, we present a 3D electrospun gelatin (EG) substrate seeded with Sertoli cells and determine its potential for guided differentiation of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) toward germline cells. The EG was fabricated by electrospinning, and its morphology under SEM, as well as cytobiocompatibility for Sertoli cells and ESCs, was confirmed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide and cell attachment assay. Embryoid bodies (EBs) were formed from ESCs and co-cultured with Sertoli cells, induced with BMP4 for 3 and 7 consecutive days to induce the differentiation of EBs toward germline cells. The differentiation was investigated by immunocytochemistry (ICC), flow cytometry, and RT-PCR in four experimental groups of EBs (EBs cultured in gelatin-coated cell culture plates); Scaffold/EB (EBs cultured on EG); ESCs/Ser (EBs and Sertoli cells co-cultured on gelatin-coated cell culture plates without EG); and Scaffold/EB/Ser (EBs and Sertoli cells co-cultured on EG). All experimental groups exhibited a significantly increased MVH (germline-specific marker) and decreased c-KIT (stemness marker) expression when compared with the EB group. ICC and flow cytometry revealed that Scaffold/EB/Ser had the highest level of MVH and the lowest c-KIT expression at both 3 and 7 days postdifferentiation compared with other groups. RT-PCR results showed a significant increase in the germline marker (Dazl) and a significant decrease in the ESC stemness marker (Nanog) in Scaffold/EB compared to the EB group. The germline markers Gcna, Stella, Mvh, Stra8, Piwil2, and Dazl were significantly increased in Scaffold/EB/Ser compared to the Scaffold/EB group. Our findings revealed that the EG scaffold can provide an excellent substrate biomimicking the micro/nanostructure of native seminiferous tubules and a platform for Sertoli cell-EB communication required for growth and differentiation of ESCs into germline cells.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to examine the available evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of corticosteroids on the management of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV). METHOD: An extensive search was conducted in Medline, Embase, and Central databases until the end of March 2020, using keywords related to corticosteroids, COVID-19, SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. The main outcome was considered to be the mortality rate, length of stay, virus clearance time, symptom improvement, and lung function improvement. The findings are presented as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI). RESULTS: Fifteen paper compromising 5 studies on COVID-19, 8 studies on SARS-CoV and 2 studies on MERS-CoV were included. One study was clinical trial and the rest were cohort. The analyses showed that corticosteroids were not reduce the mortality rate of COVID-19 (OR=1.08; 95% CI: 0.34 to 3.50) and SARS-CoV (OR=0.77; 95% CI: 0.34 to 1.3) patients, while they were associated with higher mortality rate of patients with MERS-CoV (OR = 2.52; 95% CI: 1.41 to 4.50). Moreover, it appears that corticosteroids administration would not be effective in shortening viral clearance time, length of hospitalization, and duration of relief symptoms following viral severe acute respiratory infections. CONCLUSION: There is no evidences that corticosteroids are safe and effective on the treatment of severe acute respiratory infection when COVID-19 disease is suspected. Therefore, corticosteroids prescription in COVID-19 patients should be avoided.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is one of the most common metabolic diseases in humans that cause disruption in glucose and fat metabolism. The determination of the ABO blood group system is hereditary and both diabetes and blood groups have a genetic basis. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the odds of type 2 diabetes for some blood groups. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted in hospitals of Kermanshah in 2018. The case group consisted of patients with diabetes admitted to hospital and the control group of nondiabetic patients hospitalized in the surgical ward. Information such as age, sex, BMI, family history of diabetes and blood group is collected and analyzed by the univariate and multivariate logistic regression method. RESULTS: A total of 750 patients were enrolled in this study. The number of participants in both groups was 375. The average ages of the participants were 50.51 and 51.62 years, respectively. 67.5% of the patients in the case group were female in comparison with 73.6% of those in the control group. The value of Rh+ in the case and control groups was 94.4 and 93.6%, respectively (p = 0.645). The chance of having diabetes for patients with blood group A was 76% higher than for those with blood group O (p = 0.006). CONCLUSION: According to the results of this study, the odds of type 2 diabetes for people in blood group A was higher than for those in other blood groups. It is recommended that blood group A be considered as a risk factor in the screening of type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Different methods are available for the closure of the femoral artery after catheterization. The present study aimed at comparing the effect of manual compression (MC) and closure pad (CP) on vascular complications (hematoma and bleeding) of coronary angiography. METHODS: In the current clinical trial, a total of 238 patients who were candidates for angiography were randomly assigned to the MC and CP groups. In the MC group, after removal of the arterial sheath, the arterial puncture site was manually compressed for 5-10 minutes and hemostasis was achieved. In the CP group, after removal of the arterial sheath, the arterial puncture site was first manually compressed for 5-10 minutes and initial coagulation was achieved. Then, to continue the coagulation process, a CP was attached to the artery puncture site. Postangiography complications including bleeding and hematoma were monitored in both groups immediately and up to 24 hours after hemostasis. Data were analyzed by SPSS-18 software. RESULTS: After angiography, 7 (9.5%) and 5 (2.4%) patients had hematoma in the MC and CP groups, respectively; however, no significant difference was found between the groups. Rebleeding after hemostasis was observed in 2 (7.1%) patients in the MC group, but none of the subjects in the CP group had rebleeding. There was no significant difference in bleeding volume between the groups. CONCLUSION: The results indicated the same efficacy of MC and CP methods in the prevention of postangiography vascular complications. Given the advantages of CP such as the possibility of changing the position in bed and increased physical comfort in the patient, this method is recommended for angiography and catheterization.

Herein, we developed a novel homogeneous liquid-liquid microextraction based on liquid nitrogen-induced phase separation (HLLME-LNPS) for the extraction and determination of lead (Pb) in Pb-adulterated opium and refined opium by GFAAS analysis. In this procedure, first, 400 µl of acetonitrile (extractant) containing 7.0 µl of diethyl dithiophosphoric acid (DDTP) is injected into a sample solution and a homogeneous solution is formed. Subsequently, the homogeneous mixture is cooled using liquid nitrogen for 16 seconds. By this process, due to the difference in the freezing points of the organic and aqueous phases, the homogeneous state is broken and the Pb-DDTP species are extracted into the liquid organic phase collected on top of the frozen aqueous phase. The introduced method exhibited a good linearity with a coefficient of determination (r 2) of 0.9988 and an acceptable linear range of 0.6-100 µg l-1. Accordingly, the detection limit was 0.2 µg l-1 (S/N = 3) for Pb ions, and a high enrichment factor was obtained. The proposed method was successfully utilized to determine trace levels of Pb in opium samples. The results of the sample analysis showed that 65% of the opium samples and 85% of the refined opium samples had much higher than expected levels of contaminating Pb, and this contamination poses a serious threat to drug users.

BACKGROUND: Drug injection has been increasing over the past decades all over the world. Hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV) are two common infections among people who inject drugs (PWID) and more than 60% of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases are PWID. Thus, investigating risk factors associated with drug use transition to injection is essential and was the aim of this research. METHODS: We used a database from drug use treatment centers in Kermanshah Province (Iran) in 2013 that included 2098 records of people who use drugs (PWUD). The information of 29 potential risk factors that are commonly used in the literature on drug use was selected. We employed four classification methods (decision tree, neural network, support vector machine, and logistic regression) to determine factors affecting the decision of PWUD to transition to injection. RESULTS: The average specificity of all models was over 84%. Support vector machine produced the highest specificity (0.9). Also, this model showed the highest total accuracy (0.91), sensitivity (0.94), positive likelihood ratio [1] and Kappa (0.94) and the smallest negative likelihood ratio (0). Therefore, important factors according to the support vector machine model were used for further interpretation. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the support vector machine model, the use of heroin, cocaine, and hallucinogens were identified as the three most important factors associated with drug use transition injection. The results further indicated that PWUD with the history of prison or using drug due to curiosity and unemployment are at higher risks. Unemployment and unreliable sources of income were other suggested factors of transition in this research.

PURPOSE: Study habits have been the most important predictor of academic performance and play a special role in the academic achievement of students. The aim of this study was to investigate the status of study habits and its relationship with academic achievement in medical sciences students in Kermanshah-Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 380 medical sciences students at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences. The samples were randomly assigned to the study. The Palsane and Sharma study Habit Inventory was the tool used for data collection. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: The mean of students' grade point average was 15.73±1.5 out of 20 and the mean of total status of study habits was 45.70±11.36 out of 90. The status of study habits in 81.3% of the students was at moderate level. There was a direct and significant relationship between study habits and academic achievement. CONCLUSION: The status of study habits was at moderate level for most students. Therefore, it is recommended to consider and assess students' study habits at the time of entry into university, in addition, specific training should be offered to students in order to help them learn or modify study habits to increase their academic achievements.
