RESUMO
Abstract Cephalometry is a morphological and descriptive diagnostic method that provides relevant data on skeletal and dentoalveolar malocclusions of patients seeking orthodontics treatment. Several authors have proposed different cephalometric measurements to determine facial growth direction and facial biotype, the results of these different measurements from the same patient do not always agree on the diagnosis. The aim of this study was to determine the level of agreement between Ricketts and Björk-Jarabak cephalometric analyses for the determination of facial growth direction and facial biotype in patients from a population of Yucatan, Mexico. A total of 260 lateral cephalograms of patients between 18 and 59 years of age were digitally traced using the Ricketts and Björk-Jarabak cephalometric analyses to determine the direction of facial growth and facial biotype using Dolphin Imagine software. Cohen's kappa statistical test was performed to establish the strength of agreement between the diagnostic results obtained by the cephalometric analyses. A poor diagnostic concordance strength was found for growth direction (K=0.105), and acceptable for facial biotype (K=0.362). The concordance strengths for each diagnostic possibility (level) ranged from slight to acceptable, except for the brachyfacial and dolichofacial biotypes, with a moderate strength of agreement. In conclusion, the Ricketts and Björk- Jarabak cephalometric measurements used for the determination of facial biotype and facial growth direction could suggest non-concordant diagnostic assessments in some individuals.
BACKGROUND: We assessed the effect of propolis on the antibacterial, mechanical, and adhesive properties of a commercial poly(alkenoate) cement. METHODS: The cement was modified with various concentrations of propolis, and antibacterial assays were performed against S. mutans by both MTT assays and agar diffusion tests. The compressive, flexural, and adhesive properties were also evaluated. RESULTS: the modified cement showed activity against S. mutans in both assays, although reductions in compressive (from 211.21 to 59.3 MPa) and flexural strength (from 11.1 to 6.2 MPa) were noted with the addition of propolis, while adhesive strength (shear bond strength and a novel pull-out method) showed a statistical difference (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: the antiseptic potential of modified material against S. mutans will allow this material to be used in cases in which low mechanical resistance is required (in addition to its anti-inflammatory properties) when using atraumatic restorative techniques, especially in deep cavities.
RESUMO
Obesity is a significant health concern that has reached alarming proportions worldwide. The overconsumption of high-energy foods may cause metabolic dysfunction and promote the generation of new adipocytes by contributing to several obesity-related diseases. Such concerns demand a deeper understanding of the origin of adipocytes if we want to develop new therapeutic approaches. Recent findings indicate that adipocyte development is facilitated by tight epigenetic reprogramming, which is required to activate the gene program to change the fate of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into mature adipocytes. Like adipose tissue, different tissues are also potential sources of adipocyte-generating MSCs, so it is interesting to explore whether the epigenetic mechanisms of adipogenic differentiation vary from one depot to another. To investigate how DNA methylation (an epigenetic mark that plays an essential role in controlling transcription and cellular differentiation) contributes to adipogenic potential, dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and periodontal ligament stem cells (PLSCs) were analyzed during adipogenic differentiation in vitro. Here, we show that the capacity to differentiate from DPSCs or PLSCs to adipocytes may be associated with the expression pattern of DNA methylation-related genes acquired during the induction of the adipogenic program. Our study provides insights into the details of DNA methylation during the adipogenic determination of dental stem cells, which can be a starting point to identify the factors that affect the differentiation of these cells and provide new strategies to regulate differentiation and adipocyte expansion.
RESUMO
The role of the oral microbiome and its effect on dental diseases is gaining interest. Therefore, it has been sought to decrease the bacterial load to fight oral cavity diseases. In this study, composite materials based on chitosan, chitosan crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, chitosan with zinc oxide particles, and chitosan with copper nanoparticles were prepared in the form of thin films, to evaluate a new alternative with a more significant impact on the oral cavity bacteria. The chemical structures and physical properties of the films were characterized using by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR,) Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), elemental analysis (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact angle measurements. Subsequently, the antimicrobial activity of each material was evaluated by agar diffusion tests. No differences were found in the hydrophilicity of the films with the incorporation of ZnO or copper particles. Antimicrobial activity was found against S. aureus in the chitosan film crosslinked with glutaraldehyde, but not in the other compositions. In contrast antimicrobial activity against S. typhimurium was found in all films. Based on the data of present investigation, chitosan composite films could be an option for the control of microorganisms with potential applications in various fields, such as medical and food industry.
RESUMO
SUMMARY: The incisors are a key factor in dental occlusion and dentofacial aesthetics; therefore, the sagittal position and inclination of the incisors is a key parameter in diagnosis and orthodontic treatment planning. In some cases, the orthodontist will use more than one cephalometric analysis, and thus different results can be obtained. The aim of this study was to establish the diagnostic agreement among the different cephalometric measurements used to determine the anteroposterior position and the inclination of the incisors. Lateral cephalometric radiograms of patients between 18 and 59 years old were measured (n=260). Digital cephalometric measurements were made with Dolphin Imaging software, by a single calibrated operator. Here, a specific cephalometric analysis was designed in the software analysis editor. The results for each variable and each measurement were registered and compared. Fleiss's Kappa statistical tests, Cohen's Kappa, and Kendall's coefficient were used to determine the strength of agreement using the Minitab software. The results showed diagnostic strength agreement between slight and moderate among measurements of the same variable. This indicates that same diagnosis might not be obtained when using different approaches to measure the anteroposterior position and inclination of the incisors. It was concluded that there is a difference in the diagnosis between one measurement and another because the results showed slight or moderate strength of agreement. However, in some cases, better agreement was found when the measurements were compared as a function of the diagnostic response.

Copper nanoparticles (NCu) were synthetized and added to commercial glass ionomer cement, to evaluate in vitro its antibacterial activity against oral cavity strains. The NCu were synthesized by copper acetate reduction with L-ascorbic acid and characterized by FTIR, Raman, XPS, XRD and TEM. Then, commercial glass ionomer cement (GIC) was modified (MGIC) with various concentrations of NCu and physicochemically characterized. Cell viability was tested against human dental pulp fibroblasts (HDPFs) by Alamar-Blue assay and antibacterial test was performed against S. mutans and S. sanguinis by colony forming unit (CFU) growth method. Synthesized NCu rendered a mixture of both metallic copper and cuprous oxide (Cu2O). HDPF viability reduces with exposure time to the extracts (68-72% viability) and MGIC with 2-4 wt% NCu showed antimicrobial activity against the two tested strains.
