Parkinsonism is an age-related neurodegenerative illness that affects motor coordination leading to loss of dopaminergic neurons. Many medications are used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease but are only symptomatic and have a limited effect on the progression of this ailment. Therefore, bioactive compounds which derived from plants have been examined for their ability to improve the neuronal damage and cell death happened in parkinsonian patients. In this study the iridoids-rich fraction isolated from Pentas lanceolata (PIRF) leaves was investigated for its phytoconstituents. Seven iridoids (1-7) and one flavonol diglycoside (8) were isolated, and their chemical structures were achieved by 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance and ESI-MS spectral data. Compound 1 (6ß,7ß-epoxy-8-epi-splendoside) and 5 (gaertneroside) were isolated for the first time from Pentas genus as well as compound 8 (kaempferol-3-O-robinobioside). The current study aims to investigate the possible anti-parkinsonian effect of PIRF using a rotenone model of Parkinsonism in mice. Behavioural tests (wirehanging, stair and wooden-walking tests) were done to examine the motor coordination in mice after treatment. Biochemical and histopathological examinations for brain striatum in different groups were also evaluated. Results revealed that rotenone-treated mice had poor motor functions described by depletion of dopamine and Ach levels, a significant increase in proinflammatory cytokines, IL-1B, TNF-α and Mcp-1 and oxidative biomarkers with subsequent reduction in antioxidant mediators. Disorganization of striatum, degenerated neurocytes, slight vacuolation, shrunken neurons with pyknotic nuclei and apoptotic cells are displayed by histopathological examinations. Treatment with PIRF ameliorates the neurodegeneration-induced by rotenone in the brain of mice. The anti-parkinsonian effect of PIRF could be attributed to their bioactive constituents of iridoids.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological condition frequently identified in early childhood and frequently co-occurs with other neuropsychological disorders, particularly autism. Viloxazine hydrochloride, a non-stimulant medication, has recently gained approval for treating attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. This paper describes the first spectrofluorimetric method for precisely measuring the content of viloxazine in pharmaceutical capsules and rat plasma. This method employed NBD-Cl (4-chloro-7-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazole) as a fluorescent probe, which transformed viloxazine in an alkaline environment into a remarkably sensitive fluorescent adduct. Upon excitation at 476 nm, this adduct becomes detectable at a wavelength of 536 nm. The method was validated using ICH criteria, revealing acceptable linearity across a concentration range of 200-2000 ng/ml and high sensitivity with LOD and LOQ values of 46.774 ng/ml and 141.741 ng/ml, respectively. This method was adeptly applied in a pharmacokinetic study of viloxazine in rat plasma following a single oral dose (10 mg/kg), yielding a mean peak plasma concentration (Cmax) of 1721 ng/ml, achieved within 1.5 h. Furthermore, the environmental impact of the technique was assessed using two greenness assessment tools, revealing a notable level of eco-friendliness and sustainability.

The incidence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in healthcare environments, particularly in low-and middle-income countries, is on the rise. The purpose of this study was to provide comprehensive genomic insights into thirteen P. aeruginosa isolates obtained from Egyptian healthcare settings. Phenotypic analysis of the antimicrobial resistance profile and biofilm formation were performed using minimum inhibitory concentration and microtiter plate assay, respectively. Whole genome sequencing was employed to identify sequence typing, resistome, virulome, and mobile genetic elements. Our findings indicate that 92.3% of the isolates were classified as extensively drug-resistant, with 53.85% of these demonstrating strong biofilm production capabilities. The predominant clone observed in the study was ST773, followed by ST235, both of which were associated with the O11 serotype. Core genome multi-locus sequence typing comparison of these clones with global isolates suggested their potential global expansion and adaptation. A significant portion of the isolates harbored Col plasmids and various MGEs, all of which were linked to antimicrobial resistance genes. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in different genes were associated with the development of antimicrobial resistance in these isolates. In conclusion, this pilot study underscores the prevalence of extensively drug-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates and emphasizes the role of horizontal gene transfer facilitated by a diverse array of mobile genetic elements within various clones. Furthermore, specific insertion sequences and mutations were found to be associated with antibiotic resistance.

Edwardsiellosis is a bacterial fish disease that mostly occurs in freshwater farms and is characterized by a high mortality rate. Edwardsiella tarda strain was recovered from 17 fish out of 50 Nile tilapia, which were harboring clinical signs of systemic septicemia. The level of un-ionized ammonia (NH3) in the fish farm's water was 0.11-0.15 mg/L, which was stressful for the Nile tilapia.Sequencing of the gyrB1 gene confirmed that the isolate was E. tarda JALO4, and it was submitted to NCBI under the accession number PP449014. The isolated E. tarda harbored the virulence gene edw1 AHL-synthase (quorum sensing). In addition, the isolate was sensitive to trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole mean while it was intermediate to florfenicol. The median lethal dose (LD50) of E. tarda JALO4 was determined to be 1.7 × 105 CFU/mL in Nile tilapia.In the indoor experiment, Nile tilapia (45.05 ± 0.4 g), which received dietary Spirulina platensis (5 and 10 g/kg fish feed), showed optimum growth and feed utilization. Meanwhile, after receiving dietary S. platensis, the fish's feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly enhanced compared to the control, which was 1.94, 1.99, and 2.88, respectively. The expression of immune-related genes interleukin (IL)-1ß and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α were upsurged in E. tarda-challenged fish with higher intensity in S. platensis groups. Dietary S. platensis at a dose of 10 g/kg fish feed could provide a relative protection level (RPL) of 22.2% Nile tilapia challenged against E. tarda. Nile tilapia experimentally infected E. tarda, drastically altering their behavior: higher operculum movement, low food apprehension, and abnormal swimming dietary S. platensis (10 g/kg fish feed) could rapidly restore normal status.It was concluded that Edwardsiellosis could alter Nile tilapia behavior with a high loss in fish population. Fish received dietary-S. platensis could rapidly restore normal behavior after E. tarda infection. It is recommended the incorporation of S. platensis at doses of 10 g/kg into the Nile tilapia diet to boost their immunity and counteract E. tarda infection.

The ability to deliver large transgenes to a single genomic sequence with high efficiency would accelerate biomedical interventions. Current methods suffer from low insertion efficiency and most rely on undesired double-strand DNA breaks. Serine integrases catalyze the insertion of large DNA cargos at attachment (att) sites. By targeting att sites to the genome using technologies such as prime editing, integrases can target safe loci while avoiding double-strand breaks. We developed a method of phage-assisted continuous evolution we call IntePACE, that we used to rapidly perform hundreds of rounds of mutagenesis to systematically improve activity of PhiC31 and Bxb1 serine integrases. Novel hyperactive mutants were generated by combining synergistic mutations resulting in integration of a multi-gene cargo at rates as high as 80% of target chromosomes. Hyperactive integrases inserted a 15.7 kb therapeutic DNA cargo containing von Willebrand Factor. This technology could accelerate gene delivery therapeutics and our directed evolution strategy can easily be adapted to improve novel integrases from nature.

This study focuses on the development of a novel self-cleaning nanofiltration membrane for the efficient removal of the cationic dye methylene blue (MB) from industrial wastewater. The membrane is composed of vinyl resin (VR), cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), and titanium alpha aluminate (TAAL) nanoparticles.The TAAL loading ranged from 1 to 5 wt%, the pH varied from 5 to 10, and the initial MB concentration ranged from 10 to 50 ppm. Using a dead-end filtration system, the (VR/CNF@TAAL) membrane with 5 wt% TAAL at pH 10 demonstrated excellent performances. It achieved a remarkable 98.6% removal efficiency for 30 ppm MB dye, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 125.8 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics analysis revealed that the process followed the pseudo-second-order model, indicating a chemisorption mechanism. The rate constant was determined to be 1.2732 × 10-3 g mg-1 min-1. The Freundlich isotherm model provided a better fit (R2 = 0.996) than the Langmuir model, suggesting multilayer adsorption on the nanocomposite membrane surface. In addition to its high adsorption and filtration capabilities, the (VR/CNF@TAAL) nanocomposite membrane exhibited cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness as an adsorbent for MB removal from industrial wastewater. The membrane's self-cleaning property further contributes to sustainability by reducing the need for additional chemical treatments.

This study explores the effectiveness of Alginate-coated nano­iron oxide combined with copper-based MOFs (Cu-BTC@Alg/Fe3O4) composites for the sustainable and efficient removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye from wastewater through adsorption and photocatalysis. Utilizing various characterization techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TEM, we confirmed the optimal synthesis of this composite. The composites exhibit a significant surface area of approximately 160 m2 g-1, as revealed by BET analysis, resulting in an impressive adsorption capacity of 200 mg g-1 and a removal efficiency of 97 %. Moreover, their photocatalytic activity is highly effective, producing environmentally friendly degradation byproducts, thus underlining the sustainability of Cu-BTC@Alg/Fe3O4 composites in dye removal applications. Our investigation delves into kinetics and thermodynamics, revealing a complex adsorption mechanism influenced by both chemisorption and physisorption. Notably, the adsorption kinetics indicate equilibrium attainment within 100 min across all initial concentrations, with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitting the data best (R2 ≈ 0.999). Furthermore, adsorption isotherm models, including Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich, elucidate the adsorption behavior, with the Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich models showing superior accuracy compared to the Langmuir model (R2 ≈ 0.98 and R2 ≈ 0.96, respectively). Additionally, thermodynamic analysis reveals a negative Gibbs free energy value (-6.40 kJ mol-1), indicating the spontaneity of the adsorption process, along with positive enthalpy (+24.3 kJ mol-1) and entropy (+82.06 kJ mol-1 K) values, suggesting an endothermic and disorderly process at the interface. Our comprehensive investigation provides insights into the optimal conditions for RhB adsorption onto Cu-BTC@Alg/Fe3O4 composites, highlighting their potential in wastewater treatment applications.

Genetic mutations and chronic inflammation of the colon contribute to the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). Using a murine model of inflammation-induced colon tumorigenesis, we determined how genetic mutations alter colon tumor cell differentiation. Inflammation induced by enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) colonization of multiple intestinal neoplasia (MinApcΔ716/+) mice triggers loss of heterozygosity of Apc causing colon tumor formation. Here, we report that the addition of BRAFV600E mutation (BRAFF-V600ELgr5tm1(Cre/ERT2)CleMinApcΔ716/+, BLM) or knocking out Msh2 (Msh2LoxP/LoxPVil1-creMinApcΔ716/+, MSH2KO) in the Min model altered colon tumor differentiation. Using single-cell RNA sequencing, we uncovered the differences between BLM, Min, and MSH2KO tumors at a single-cell resolution. BLM tumors showed an increase in differentiated tumor epithelial cell lineages and a reduction in the tumor stem cell population. Interestingly, the tumor stem cell population of BLM tumors had revival colon stem cell characteristics with low WNT signaling and an increase in RevCSC marker gene expression. In contrast, MSH2KO tumors were characterized by an increased tumor stem cell population that had higher WNT signaling activity compared to Min tumors. Furthermore, overall BLM tumors had higher expression of transcription factors that drive differentiation, such as Cdx2, than Min tumors. Using RNA velocity, we identified additional potential regulators of BLM tumor differentiation such as NDRG1. The role of CDX2 and NDRG1 as putative regulators for BLM tumor cell differentiation was verified using organoids derived from BLM tumors. Our results demonstrate the critical connections between genetic mutations and cell differentiation in inflammation-induced colon tumorigenesis. Understanding such roles will deepen our understanding of inflammation-associated colon cancer.

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is a ubiquitous health condition with severe outcomes. The advancement of ultrasonography techniques allows its application in evaluating pulmonary diseases, providing safer and accessible bedside therapeutic decisions compared to chest X-ray and chest computed tomography (CT) scan. Because of its aforementioned benefits, we aimed to confirm the diagnostic accuracy of lung ultrasound (LUS) for pneumonia in adults. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed of Medline, Cochrane and Crossref, independently by two authors. The selection of studies proceeded based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria without restrictions to particular study designs, language or publication dates and was followed by data extraction. The gold standard reference in the included studies was chest X-ray/CT scan or both. RESULTS: Twenty-nine (29) studies containing 6702 participants were included in our meta-analysis. Pooled sensitivity, specificity and PPV were 92% (95% CI: 91-93%), 94% (95% CI: 94 to 95%) and 93% (95% CI: 89 to 96%), respectively. Pooled positive and negative likelihood ratios were 16 (95% CI: 14 to 19) and 0.08 (95% CI: 0.07 to 0.09). The area under the ROC curve of LUS was 0. 9712. CONCLUSIONS: LUS has high diagnostic accuracy in adult pneumonia. Its contribution could form an optimistic clue in future updates considering this condition.

Cyantraniliprole is a novel anthranilic diamide insecticide registered for controlling chewing and sucking insect pests. Here, the lethal and sublethal effects of this insecticide on two destructive lepidopteran pests, Spodoptera littoralis Boisduval and Agrotis ipsilon Hufnagel, were evaluated. Because the effects of novel insecticides on beneficial and non-target arthropods must be considered, the impact of cyantraniliprole on a generalist biological control agent, Chrysoperla carnea [Stephens 1836], were also examined. Overall, our study revealed that cyantraniliprole was more toxic to A. ipsilon than to S. littoralis. Moreover, the LC15 and LC50 of the insecticide significantly prolonged the duration of the larval and pupal stages and induced enzymatic detoxification activity in both species. Treatment of the second-instar larvae of C. carnea with the recommended concentration of cyantraniliprole (0.75 mg/L) doubled the mortality rates and resulted in a slight negative effect on the biology and detoxification enzymes of C. carnea. Our results indicate that both sublethal and lethal concentrations of cyantraniliprole can successfully suppress S. littoralis and A. ipsilon populations. They also suggest that C. carnea, as a generalist predator, is compatible with cyantraniliprole under the modelled realistic field conditions. In future investigations, insights into the effects of cyantraniliprole on S. littoralis, A. ipsilon, and C. carnea under field conditions will be required to appropriately validate our results.

Futibatinib is a powerful inhibitor of fibroblast growth factor receptors that impedes its phosphorylation and subsequently leading to a reduction in in cell viability across various cell lines. Futibatinib was approved for initial use as an effective treatment for several diseases, including non-small cell lung cancer and breast cancer. Herein, a novel selective fluorescence probe was created for futibatinib quantification in various matrices, including pharmaceutical formulation and human plasma. The technique primarily depends on futibatinib's chemical conversion into a fluorescent product through a reaction with trimethylamine and bromoacetyl bromide. The created fluorescent probe exhibits maximum emission peak at 338 nm upon excitation at 248 nm. The method provided a low detection limit of 0.120 ng/mL and maintained a linear concentration-dependent relationship across the range of 1-200 ng/mL. High sensitivity, accuracy and precision were demonstrated for futibatinib quantification in pharmaceutical formulation and spiked plasma matrix by the method, which was validated in accordance with ICH requirements.

Phasor measurement units (PMU) are currently considered as an essential step toward the future smart grid due to their capability in increasing the power system's situation awareness. Due to their high costs and limited resources, optimal placement of PMUs (OPP) is an important challenge to compute the minimum number of PMUs and their optimal distribution in the power systems for achieving full monitoring. The coronavirus herd immunity optimizer (CHIO) is a novel optimization algorithm that emulates the flock immunity strategies for the elimination of the coronavirus pandemic. In this research, the CHIO is adapted for the OPP problem for full fault observability. The proposed algorithm is implemented on power systems considering the zero injection bus impacts. A program is created in MATLAB® environment to implement the proposed algorithm. The algorithm is applied to different test systems including; IEEE 9-bus, 14-bus, 30-bus, 118-bus, 300-bus, New England 39-bus and Polish 2383-bus. The proposed CHIO-based OPP is compared to some exact and metaheuristic-based OPP techniques. Compared to these techniques, the promising results have proved the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed CHIO to solve the OPP problem for full fault observability.

The continued circulation of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) in Egypt, despite the use of various vaccines, is a serious problem that requires continuous detection of IBDV. In the current study, real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction testing of 100 diseased chicken flocks during 2017-2021 revealed the presence of very virulent IBDV (vvIBDV) in 67% of the flocks, non-vvIBDV in 11%, and a mixture of both vvIBDV and non-vvIBDV in 4%. Twenty-nine IBDV isolates were submitted for partial sequencing of the viral protein 2 hypervariable region (VP2-HVR), and 27 isolates were confirmed to be genogroup A3 (vvIBDV) with 96.3%-98.5% similarity to the global A3 (vvIBDV) and 88.9%-97% similarity to genogroup A1 vaccine strains. The remaining two isolates were non-vvIBDV and showed 91.1% and 100% identity with classical genogroup A1 strains, respectively. Furthermore, the sequence and phylogenetic analysis of VP1 (amino acids 33-254) of two selected isolates of A3, 5/2017 and 98/2021, clustered them as B2, vvIBDV-like, strains with high similarity (99.5%) to four Egyptian, 99% to Chinese and European, and 97.7% to Chinese and Polish vvIBDV isolates. Experimental infection of commercial broiler chickens with two vvIBDV-A3B2 isolates (5/2017 and 98/2021) showed no mortality despite typical tissue lesions, clear histopathological changes, and strong ELISA antibody response. Isolate 98/2021 was more pathogenic, as confirmed by histopathology, whereas isolate 5/2017 induced a stronger serological response. In conclusion, vvIBDV (A3B2) strains with two amino acid (aa) substitutions in VP1 as V141I and V234I as well as VP2 as Y220F and G254S are still circulating in Egypt.


Análisis de las secuencias genéticas y de la patogenicidad del virus de la enfermedad infecciosa de la bolsa de pollos en Egipto durante los años 2017­2021. La circulación continua del virus de la enfermedad infecciosa de la bolsa (IBDV) en Egipto, a pesar del uso de varias vacunas, continua siendo un problema serio que requiere la detección continua de este virus. En el presente estudio, se realizó una prueba de transcripción reversa y reacción en cadena de la polimerasa en tiempo real de 100 parvadas enfermas de pollos durante los años 2017­2021 y reveló la presencia de virus muy virulentos (vvIBDV) en el 67% de las parvadas, otros tipos diferentes a los muy virulentos en el 11%, y una mezcla de virus muy virulentos y otros tiposen un 4% de las parvadas. Se enviaron veintinueve aislados del virus de la enfermedad infecciosa de la bolsa para la secuenciación parcial de la región hipervariable de la proteína viral 2 (VP2-HVR), y se confirmó que 27 aislados pertenecían al genogrupo A3 (vvIBDV) con una similitud del 96.3% al 98.5% con el genogrupo A3 global (vvIBDV) y de 88.9% a 97% de similitud con las cepas vacunales del genogrupo A1. Los dos aislamientos restantes no resultaron ser muy virulentos y mostraron un 91.1% y un 100% de identidad con las cepas clásicas del genogrupo A1, respectivamente. Además, la secuencia y el análisis filogenético de la proteina VP1 (aminoácidos 33-254) de dos aislados seleccionados de genogrupo A3, 5/2017 y 98/2021, los agruparon como cepas B2, similares a virus muy virulentos, con alta similitud (99.5%) con cuatro aislamientos de Egipto, con similitud de 99% con aislados chinos y europeos, y de 97.7% con aislados muy virulentos chinos y polacos. La infección experimental de pollos de engorde comerciales con dos aislados muy virulentos tipo A3B2 (5/2017 y 98/2021) no mostró mortalidad a pesar de las lesiones tisulares típicas, los cambios histopatológicos claros y la fuerte respuesta de anticuerpos por ELISA. El aislado 98/2021 fue más patógeno, según lo confirmado por histopatología, mientras que el aislado 5/2017 indujo una respuesta serológica más fuerte. En conclusión, las cepas muy virulentas (A3B2) con dos sustituciones de aminoácidos (aa) en la proteina VP1 como V141I y V234I, así como en VP2 tales como Y220F y G254S, todavía circulan en Egipto.

Background: Mounting research suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the innovations that aid in the patient's diagnosis and treatment, but unfortunately limited research has been conducted in this regard in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Hence, this study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and awareness of AI among faculty members and medicine students in one of the premier medical colleges in KSA. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at Batterjee Medical College (BMC), Jeddah (KSA), from November 2022 to April 2023. Result: A total of 131 participants contributed to our study, of which three were excluded due to incomplete responses, thereby giving a response rate of 98%. Conclusion: 85.4% of the respondents believe that AI has a positive impact on the healthcare system and physicians in general. Hence, there should be a mandatory course in medical schools that can prepare future doctors to diagnose patients more accurately, make predictions about patients' future health, and recommend better treatments.

Background Numerous clinical signs and symptoms are thought to be associated with insulin resistance. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of insulin resistance among male medical students attending a private Saudi Arabian institution, based on clinical indications. Methods A convenient non-probability sample consisting of 241 male medical students was used to conduct cross-sectional research. Each participant had an in-person interview as well as anthropometric measurements. The interview consisted of a questionnaire that was used to assess demographic data and clinical manifestations related to insulin resistance. Results The study demonstrated the connection between a few dermatological symptoms and waist circumference as an indicator of insulin resistance. In both the high and normal waist circumference groups, acne was the most common symptom. There was no correlation found between waist circumference and psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata, or vitiligo. Nevertheless, as an indicator of insulin resistance, waist circumference was statistically significantly correlated with both skin tags and acanthosis nigricans. Most students had excessive day sleep, foggy brains, struggled with planning and solving problems, and had a memory that became worse in the past few years. In addition, many students feel hungry even after eating some sweets and usually have extreme thirst. Conclusion Among medical students, skin tags, acanthosis nigricans, and acne were the most prevalent dermatological manifestations. Clinicians need to be aware that skin conditions, sleep difficulties throughout the day, changes in cognition, and food cravings might all be indicators of internal changes and/or illnesses such as diabetes and prediabetes.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the immune system erroneously attacking healthy tissues and organs. SLE has a wide variety of clinical presentations. The signs and symptoms of SLE are very well-known, though rare presentations could occur that require early clinical attention. Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a severe and life-threatening condition in which the immune system becomes overactive, leading to the excessive stimulation and proliferation of immune cells. MAS can occur as a primary immune disorder, which is not very common. It can also happen secondary to a wide variety of pathological conditions, which include infections, malignancies, autoimmune, and rheumatologic disorders. In rare cases, SLE can present with overlapping features of MAS, further complicating the clinical picture, and may require specialized management. Early recognition and intervention of this overlap are essential for improving outcomes, as delayed diagnosis and treatment can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Here, we present a case of a young adult female who was diagnosed with SLE with the initial presentation of MAS in the form of fever, splenomegaly, cytopenia, and hemophagocytosis.

Quartzite caves located on table-top mountains (tepuis) in the Guyana Shield, are ancient, remote, and pristine subterranean environments where microbes have evolved peculiar metabolic strategies to thrive in silica-rich, slightly acidic and oligotrophic conditions. In this study, we explored the culturable fraction of the microbiota inhabiting the (ortho)quartzite cave systems in Venezuelan tepui (remote table-top mountains) and we investigated their metabolic and enzymatic activities in relation with silica solubilization and extracellular hydrolytic activities as well as the capacity to produce antimicrobial compounds. Eighty microbial strains were isolated with a range of different enzymatic capabilities. More than half of the isolated strains performed at least three enzymatic activities and four bacterial strains displayed antimicrobial activities. The antimicrobial producers Paraburkholderia bryophila CMB_CA002 and Sphingomonas sp. MEM_CA187, were further analyzed by conducting chemotaxonomy, phylogenomics, and phenomics. While the isolate MEM_CA187 represents a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas, for which the name Sphingomonas imawarii sp. nov. is proposed, P. bryophila CMB_CA002 is affiliated with a few strains of the same species that are antimicrobial producers. Chemical analyses demonstrated that CMB_CA002 produces ditropolonyl sulfide that has a broad range of activity and a possibly novel siderophore. Although the antimicrobial compounds produced by MEM_CA187 could not be identified through HPLC-MS analysis due to the absence of reference compounds, it represents the first soil-associated Sphingomonas strain with the capacity to produce antimicrobials. This work provides first insights into the metabolic potential present in quartzite cave systems pointing out that these environments are a novel and still understudied source of microbial strains with biotechnological potential.

Retained surgical items (RSIs) pose significant risks to patients and healthcare professionals, prompting extensive efforts to reduce their incidence. RSIs are objects inadvertently left within patients' bodies after surgery, which can lead to severe consequences such as infections and death. The repercussions highlight the critical need to address this issue. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) have displayed considerable potential for enhancing the prevention of RSIs through heightened precision and decreased reliance on human involvement. ML techniques are finding an expanding number of applications in medicine, ranging from automated imaging analysis to diagnosis. DL has enabled substantial advances in the prediction capabilities of computers by combining the availability of massive volumes of data with extremely effective learning algorithms. This paper reviews and evaluates recently published articles on the application of ML and DL in RSIs prevention and diagnosis, stressing the need for a multi-layered approach that leverages each method's strengths to mitigate RSI risks. It highlights the key findings, advantages, and limitations of the different techniques used. Extensive datasets for training ML and DL models could enhance RSI detection systems. This paper also discusses the various datasets used by researchers for training the models. In addition, future directions for improving these technologies for RSI diagnosis and prevention are considered. By merging ML and DL with current procedures, it is conceivable to substantially minimize RSIs, enhance patient safety, and elevate surgical care standards.

BACKGROUND: Organ donation plays a pivotal role in addressing the global demand for transplantable organs and saving lives. The success of organ transplantation relies not only on medical advancements but also on the willingness of communities to participate in organ donation programs. In Saudi Arabia, specifically within the Al-Majma'ah region, understanding the dynamics of knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to organ donation is crucial for promoting a sustainable and ethical organ donation system. METHODS: A cross-sectional, retrospective study was utilized in this research, employing data from a sample of 564 participants from the general population of the Al-Majma'ah region, Saudi Arabia. The participants completed a self-administered questionnaire and ensured anonymity. RESULTS: About 545 (96.6%) respondents were familiar with the concept of organ donation, and 455 (80.7%) participants recognized the necessity for the blood groups of the donor and recipient to match before the transplant process. About 412 (73.0%) participants agreed with the practice of organ donation with 326 (57.8%) expressing support for the practice. About 417 (73.9%) participants reported that their religion permits or endorses organ donation/transplantation. A total of 151 individuals (26.8%) had a low knowledge level, with total scores below 50% (6 or lower). In contrast, 280 people (4.7%) demonstrated a moderate level of knowledge (scoring between 50% and 75%) (7 to 9). Additionally, 133 individuals (23.5%) showcased a high level of knowledge, with scores exceeding 75% (10 or higher). The study established a statistically significant association between age, marital status with p-values < 0.05 (0.001*), and the knowledge score toward organ donation. However, gender and monthly household income were not significantly associated with knowledge score toward organ transplant with p-values (p-value > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The research findings indicated a moderate level of knowledge and a positive attitude toward organ donation among the general population of the Al-Majma'ah region in Saudi Arabia. Age and marital status were found to be significantly associated with the knowledge score toward organ donation. The study noted the desire and willingness to save lives through organ donation by the residents of the Al-Majma'ah region in Saudi Arabia.
