RESUMO

One of the most common reported adverse events for intravenous (IV) infusions are infusion site reactions, ranging from redness and pain at the site of infusion to thrombophlebitis.  The connection between drug infusion and what drives these adverse events is not well understood. To aid in understanding these phenomena, it is crucial to accurately characterize the evolving hemodynamic environment of the infusion site when developing new intravenous formulations, as too rapid dilution may cause precipitation in the vein, while too little dilution might contribute to phlebitis. In this study, a Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence modeling inside a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) framework has been used to simulate the flow and mixing characteristics of an infusion entering the bloodstream. This work represents the first such study reporting transient flow fields for intravenous infusions using LES CFD simulations with a realistic non-Newtonian blood model. The output of the CFD model closely resembled the flow and mixing patterns generated in benchtop tests for infusions into a blood analogue and water as the venous fluid across a wide range of flow rates.  These models were then investigated further to compare how changes to the fluid rheology model, needle orientation and needle position within the vein resulted in altered mixing regimes at different flow rates.

RESUMO

Alpha-synuclein is a neuronal protein with unclear function but is associated with the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease and other synucleinopathies. In this review, we discuss the emerging functional role of alpha-synuclein in support of the unique immune responses in the nervous system. Recent data now show that alpha-synuclein functions to support interferon signaling within neurons and is released from neurons to support chemoattraction and activation of local glial cells and infiltrating immune cells. Inflammatory activation and interferon signaling also induce post-translational modifications of alpha-synuclein that are commonly associated with Parkinson's disease pathogenesis. Taken together, emerging data implicate complex interactions between alpha-synuclein and host immune responses that may contribute to the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. Additional study of the function of alpha-synuclein in the brain's immune response may provide disease-modifying therapeutic targets for Parkinson's disease in the future.

RESUMO

This study aims to detect the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Listeria monocytogenes and Cronobacter sakazakii in three dairy households and dried milk from different suppliers, and evaluate the antimicrobial effect of rose water, rose, and orange essential oils. In total, 360 samples were collected from cattle, the environment, and dried milk (n = 30). Antimicrobial activity was evaluated with twofold microtube dilution and the time-kill method. L. monocytogenes was identified in all households (13.3%) with a prevalence in the range of 5.8-17.5%, while C. sakazakii was identified in one household (5.3%). The former and latter pathogens were highly isolated from the feces at 20% and 2.5% and bedding at 12.5% and 1.6%, respectively. L. monocytogenes was isolated only from milk at 7.5%, but C. sakazakii was not detected in either milk or dried milk. L. monocytogenes strains were screened for virulence genes (iap, hylA, and actA). All strains were positive for the iap gene, while for hlyA and actA, the percentages were (35.4% 16.6%, respectively). L. monocytogenes strains showed high resistance against sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (100%), followed by gentamicin, penicillin, and imipenem (95.8%, 95.8%, and 91.6%, respectively). All C. sakazakii strains were susceptible to all tested antibiotics. The bactericidal activity of orange oil was the strongest, appeared after 1 h for both pathogens, followed by rose oil and then rose water.

RESUMO

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the need for a better health care facility is highlighted more than ever. Besides physical health, mental health conditions have become a significant concern. Unfortunately, there are few opportunities for people to receive mental health care. There are inadequate facilities for seeking mental health support even in big cities, let alone remote areas. This paper presents the structure and implementation procedures for a mental health support system combining technology and professionals. The system is a web platform where mental health seekers can register and use functionalities like NLP-based chatbot for personality assessment, chatting with like-minded people, and one-to-one video conferencing with a mental health professional. The video calling feature of the system has emotion detection capabilities using computer vision. The system also includes downloadable prescription facilities and a payment gateway for secure transactions. From a technological aspect, the conversational NLP-based chatbot and computer vision-powered video calling are the system's most important features. The system has a documentation facility to analyze the mental health condition over time. The web platform is built using React.js for the frontend and Express.js for the backend. MongoDB is used as the database of the platform. The NLP chatbot is built on a three-layered deep neural network model that is programmed in the Python language and uses the NLTK, TensorFlow, and Keras sequential API. Video conference is one of the most important features of the platform. To create the video calling feature, Express.js, Socket.io, and Socket.io-client have been used. The emotion detection feature is implemented on video conferences using computer vision, Haar Cascade, and TensorFlow. All the implemented features are tested and work fine. The targeted users for the platform are teenagers, youth, and the middle-aged population. Mental health-seeking is still considered taboo in some societies today. Apart from basic established facilities, this social dilemma of undergoing treatment for mental health is causing severe damage to individuals. A solution to this problem can be a remote platform for mental health support. With this goal in mind, this system is designed to provide mental health support to people remotely from anywhere worldwide.

RESUMO

The Cu-doped ZnAl layered double hydroxides (LDH) were papered by coprecipitation. The prepared samples were characterized by mutiple techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). The doping of Cu2+ into the LDH sheets results in formation of the distorted CuO6 octahedrons which contribute for the excitation of electrons under visible light. The doped Cu2+ also serves as photo-generated charges separator and improves the visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of ZnAl LDH. A degradation mechanism based on the hydroxyl radical as the active species was proposed.

RESUMO

Aim: The objective of this study is to compare the knowledge, practice and awareness of oral hygiene among three different age groups (15-30, 30-45 and 45-60-year-olds) of the Saudi population in Sakaka. Methods: 629 subjects aged between 15-60 years were randomly selected. Data were collected by self-administered structured questionnaires and analysis was done using the SPSS statistical software. The subjects were divided in to A group (e”30 years), B group (d”31 years - e”45 years) and C group (d”46 years). Results: 30.7% (A group) of subjects preferred commercial bush to clean their teeth (p<0.001), while 5.9% (B and C groups) choose Miswak for cleaning. Group B people preferred brushing only in the morning (24.5%), while 16.5% of group A respondents preferred brushing twice a day. 23.1% of group A subjects responded that brushing regularly was the ideal way to avoid caries (p<0.05). 51.8% of all age groups had no idea on the effects of fluoride on caries disease. The reason to visit dentist was mainly for extraction (30.5%) followed by pain relief (28.9%). 62.62% (p<0.05) subjects had carious lesions, whereas 56.6% subjects had fractured teeth. The use of tobacco (16.7%) was highly prevalent in group B subjects (p<0.05). Tea consumption among A group subjects (49.6%) more than other age groups (p<0.001). 81.2% subjected were free from gingival bleeding (p<0.05). Most of the people (48.6%) preferred frequent dental camps in response to their opinion to improve dental facilities in Sakaka, Al-Jouf. Conclusions: The present study shows that poorer knowledge and oral health conditions among 30-45-year-old subjects (B group) compared to the other two groups. Generally, these data may be important in the evaluation of the past and planning of future oral health prevention and treatment programs targeting the high-risk populations.

RESUMO

Seeking better immunological markers indicating the long-term outcome of cystic echinococcosis (CE) after chemotherapy we studied 23 patients receiving albendazole, clinically followed for 8 years, and grouped ultrasonographically according to therapeutic outcome. Antibody responses against a partially purified fraction of hydatid fluid (HFF) and antigen B (AgB) were evaluated by indirect haemagglutination (IHA), ELISA and immunoblotting (IB). Although IHA titres varied over the course of treatment, differences in mean antibody titres to HFF between groups were significant only at 4 years (P = 0.031). IgG isotype expression remained unchanged during follow-up whereas IgE expression decreased in patients with cured or stable disease. AgB disclosed higher IgG4 expression (P < 10(-4); P = 0.025) and lower IgG1 expression than HFF (P < 10(-4); P = 0.022). IHA antibody titres were higher in patients with progressive than in those with cured or stable disease, even in those with the same cyst type. ELISA isotype profiles differed between groups, particularly for type CE 3, 4 and 5 cysts: higher serum IgG1 and IgG3, lower IgG4 and IgE in patients with cured or stable disease. Although combined serological testing provides scarce information on the long-term outcome of CE after chemotherapy it may be useful for reviewing in a retrospective study the outcome of a cyst and for assessing the host-parasite relationship.
